BUYING AN ENGAGEMENT RING CAN BE A DAUNTING as well as a joyful prospect, so it’s a good idea to know what to look out for before you begin your search. Since diamonds are by far the most popular choice, here are some pointers to get you started. Think of them as the four Cs: Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat weight.

COLOR Most diamonds have traces of yellow, brown, green or grey and it’s rare to find one without any color at all. Consequently, the more colorless the diamond, the greater its value. CUT Diamond cutting is a highly skilled and precise art, which determines how the stone’s many facets interact with light and consequently how brightly it sparkles. Look for a diamond with the most brilliant sparkle for its size. CLARITY This is defined by how many small imperfections there are on the surface or within the diamond itself. In most cases, since they cannot be seen with the naked eye, they do not detract from the beauty of the gem, but those with fewer flaws will attract a higher price tag.

The Awning Advantage CARAT WEIGHT This is the unit of measurement used to describe the weight of a diamond, not its size. The average carat weight of an engagement ring diamond in the United States is between 1.00 and 1.2 carats, 1 carat being the equivalent of a fifth of a gram.

Pure gold is too soft to make into jewelry, so it has to be mixed with other metals for added strength. 18kt gold is 75% pure gold, mixed with silver, copper or zinc.; 14kt. gold is 58% pure gold, with the same added metals. It is slower to tarnish and more resistant to scratching or corrosion, because the other metals make it harder and more durable. The most important thing to remember when purchasing an engagement ring is that it will be a part of your life for a very long time, so choose carefully. Once you have decided and the purchase has been completed, it would be advisable to get the ring insured. That way, you will have one less thing to worry about as you move on to making plans for the next chapter of your life together.
