Willkommen im neuen Schulalltag Reinventing Daily School Life
During my recent visit to a large secondary school in Münster as part of a competition jury, one conspicuous detail caught my eye upon closer inspection of the impressive timber building: Nowhere were there blackboards, textbooks, notebooks, or writing utensils. Why would there be? Nowadays, students read and write on their tablets. The classic school satchel is obsolete, and paper is a thing of the past; for a tablet, all you need is a small bag. Daily life in schools has undergone a more profound transformation than any other public institution – and architecture is responding to this shift by adapting the programme to align with new digital teaching methods and educational concepts. For this concept issue, my colleague Peter Popp curated a compilation of new school buildings that address this change
in various ways. From Copenhagen and Munich to Madrid and Antwerp, these structures cater to diverse educational institutions. Yet, they share a common trait: their rooms are not monofunctional but multipurpose, offering a spectrum of choices. A central objective of these cuttingedge school designs is to create opportunities for social interaction and meaningful encounters. In the digital age, this becomes paramount in schools. Students need an environment that cultivates community, allowing them to connect and develop socially. The crucial question is how best to achieve this.

Die Gebäude in Kopenhagen und München, Madrid und Antwerpen sind für verschiedene Schultypen errichtet. Dennoch haben sie eines gemeinsam: Ihre Räume sind nicht monofunktional, sondern vielschichtig. Sie stellen ein Angebot dar. Wichtig dabei sind die Möglichkeiten der sozialen Interaktion und der Begegnung. Wahrscheinlich ist das im digitalen Zeitalter auch das Wichtigste in Schulen: Schülerinnen und Schüler brauchen eine Umgebung, in der sie sich näher kommen, sich in der Gemeinschaft erproben und sozial entfalten können. Die Frage ist, wie dies am besten gelingt.

Kürzlich habe ich im Rahmen einer Jurierung eine große Gesamtschule in Münster besucht. Erst auf den zweiten Blick ist mir aufgefallen, was in dem vorbildlichen flachen Holzbau so ungewohnt war: Nirgendwo in den Klassenzimmern gab es eine Tafel, nirgendwo Bücher, Hefte oder Schreibgeräte. Warum auch? Die Schülerinnen und Schüler lesen heute auf ihrem Tablet, das sie auch zum Schreiben nutzen. Den klassischen Schulranzen gibt es längst nicht mehr. Papier war gestern. Um das Tablet einzupacken, braucht es nur eine kleine Tasche. In kaum einer anderen öffentlichen Institution hat sich der Alltag so stark verändert wie in der Schule. Die Architektur reagiert auf diesen Wandel. Sie passt ihr Raumprogramm an neue digitale Lehrmethoden und pädagogische Konzepte an.

Der sechsgeschossige Bau des Colegio Reggio zieht bereits von Weitem alle Blicke auf sich. Die Schule im wohlhabenden Madrider Stadtteil Encinar de los Reyes basiert auf Ideen der Reggio-Pädagogik. Die Erziehungsphilosophie aus den 1970erJahren legt den Fokus auf selbstgesteuertes Lernen. Eine interessant gestaltete Umgebung soll dabei helfen, die kindliche Neugier zu wecken. Der Architekt Andrés Jaque und sein Office for Political Innovation nehmen diese Forderung ernst: Mit seinen unterschiedlichen Formen, Farben und Texturen wirkt das Gebäude wie eine Spielzeugburg. Already from afar, the six storey building of the Colegio Reggio is a true eye-catcher. The school, located in Madrid’s wealthy district of Encinar de los Reyes, is based on concepts of the Reggio Emilia approach to pedagogy. This educational philosophy was developed in the 1970s and focuses on autonomous learning. An environment with an interesting design is supposed to inspire children’s curiosity. The architect Andrés Jaque and his Office for Political Innovation took this requirement seriously: With its different forms, colours and textures, the building resembles a toy castle. The cork facade tinted in bright honey yellow contributes to an expressive appearance while emphasising the ecological aims of the facility. Schon beim Betreten erschließt sich das Konzept der Schule, denn gleich hinter dem Eingang liegt der große Speisesaal. Er ist das Herz des Gebäudes. Hier essen die Kinder, was sie in der Lehrküche gekocht haben und von hier ist zu sehen, was die Schule sonst noch zu bieten hat: eine freie Bibliothek, offene Lernräume und vor allem die Sporthalle. Bewegung und Sport sind im Alltag präsent und bilden den zweiten pädagogischen Schwerpunkt. Upon entering the school, its conceptual focus becomes clear. The entrance leads directly into the large dining hall, the heart of the building. Here, the children eat the meals they cook in the teaching kitchen. In this space, the other services the school offers also become apparent: a free library, open learning spaces and, most of all, the gymnasium. Exercise and sports are essential activities of the school and constitute its second pedagogical focus.

Von allen EU-Ländern geben Dänemark und Schweden am meisten Geld für Bildung aus. Nicht umsonst glänzen sie mit fortschrittlichen Schulkonzepten. Dennoch steht für die Gebäude nicht unbegrenzt Geld zur Verfügung, und so mussten C.F. Møller Architects, die 2016 den Wettbewerb für den Neubau gewonnen hatten, mit einigen Tricks arbeiten, um das Budget für die Bildungseinrichtung einhalten zu können.
Denmark and Sweden are the two EU countries that invest the largest amount of money in education. It comes as no surprise that they boast advanced school concepts. Yet, the amount of available funds for building schools is limited. In 2016 C.F. Møller Architects won the competition for the new educational facility and had to employ a number of tricks in order to meet the budget.
Schulzweig der besonderen Art In Kopenhagen legt die Stadtverwaltung für alle städtischen Schulen die inhaltliche Ausrichtung fest. Neben Naturwissenschaften und Sprachen können das auch Politik oder Soziologie sein. Bei der Islands Brygge Skole sind Bewegung und Ernährung die Erziehungsschwerpunkte. In einer Lehrküche mit freundlich gelbem Boden erfahren die 12- bis 16-jährigen in Theorie und Praxis, was gesunde Ernährung ausmacht. An einem großen Esstisch können sie das Gelernte gleich kulinarisch überprüfen. Das Gleiche gilt für Externe, denen die Küche am Abend und an Wochenenden für Kochkurse offensteht. Das Mittagessen für den Großteil der Schüler wird hingegen in einer separaten Profiküche zubereitet, die durch Glaswände einsehbar ist. Nach einem roulierenden System helfen Kinder dort mit und gewinnen auf diese Weise Einblicke in die professionelle Speisenzubereitung.
Special kind of school structure In Copenhagen, the city authority determines the topical orientation of all municipal schools. This can include natural sciences and languages, political sciences and sociology. In the Islands Brygge Skole, exercise and diet are the education focus. A teaching kitchen allows 12 to 16 year old pupils to experience what healthy nourishment means in theory and practice. The large dining table permits culinary testing of the results of their studies. The same applies to visitors: In the evenings and on weekends, the kitchen is open to external users for cooking courses. For the majority of students, lunch is prepared in a separate professional kitchen. Its glass walls enable views inside. Children assist staff on a rotating basis and gain insight on how to professionally prepare meals.

At the table The central dining hall is the most important meeting point and the place where all functions of the school come together. At noon, it is fully occupied in a quick and surprisingly quiet manner. The two storey space and its gallery, the niches with washbasins, and most of all the triangular floor plan reduce noise effectively. Students can enter the dining hall for lunch in three shifts. Beyond the dining tables, the gymnasium invites views inside. Situating both on the same floor was decided initially due to costs, since there is no basement level. Either from the urban space or from the dining hall, everybody can see when the boys and girls exercise or stay in the hall during recess. The fundamental activities of cooking, eating, exercising all take place within one visual context. The skylight band above the dining hall enables views of the mirrored ceiling above the outdoor staircase, along which cars rushing by turn into a pattern of colourful dots. School on the roof The green outdoor staircase with its concrete seating steps and glittering underside indicates the roof access. The roof surface winds upward along three storeys and, in its entirety, serves for exercising, relaxing and learning. Here, workbenches are situated in front of craft rooms that also offer the opportunity for outdoor classes. Each room features an access to the roof. Children and teachers alike can use this shortcut in order to move quickly from one

Die Nut-FederVerbindung der Fliesen schützt vor Wassereintritt in den Luftspalt. Laut Hersteller senkt die Keramikfassade den Energiebedarf des Gebäudes um 40 %. Die Elemente sind zu 100 % recycelbar und enthalten bereits bis zu 46 % Recyclingmaterial.

Zwischen Stralsund und Rügen liegt die kleine Insel Dänholm mit ihren zahlreichen dunklen Ziegelbauten aus dem letzten Jahrhundert. Sie beherbergen unter anderem das Hauptzollamt. Etwas abseits davon lag bis vor kurzem das Dienstgebäude der Behörde, das nun großteils durch einen Neubau ersetzt wurde. Geplant wurde der L-förmige Baukörper vom Büro Bastmann + Zavracky. Eine lebendig strukturierte Ziegelhülle aus Kohlebrand-Klinkern des Typs Lübeck GT von Hagemeister sorgt dafür, dass sich der zweigeschossige Bau in sein Umfeld einfügt. Für die Fassadenfläche mit ihren 3000 m2 kam ein Sonderformat mit den Maßen 250 × 115 × 71 mm zum Einsatz. Auch im Innenraum findet sich die dunkle Keramik in Form von Klinkerriemchen des gleichen Typs.

A facade made of floor-to-ceiling aluminium frames, into which various fillings can be integrated, has been created by Lindner Building Envelope for a residential and office building in Berlin. The new building with an area of almost 1800 m 2 occupies a setback plot of land on Bundesallee in the district of CharlottenburgWilmersdorf. The seven-storey reinforced concrete skeleton structure was designed and planned by Kunat Architekten. The building envelope consists of 153 floor-to-ceiling cases, each of which is filled with glass,
photovoltaic panels and wooden slats on the outside, or even greened. The corresponding aluminium frames were prefabricated by Lindner in Arnstorf and delivered to the respective partner companies. These companies then integrated the power connections for the PV system and the irrigation pipes for the greening system into the pilaster strips, which are just 127 mm thick. The window elements were made with wooden frames, triple glazing and parapet panes with glare protection.
