Useful Information
Why is Ventilation Important?
Efficient bathroom ventilation is crucial as it helps remove excess moisture, steam, and smells from your home, while reducing the risk of mould growing in your home. Bathrooms will see varying levels of moisture and humidity on a daily basis due to their typical usage, such as bathing or showering. Unlike other rooms, a bathroom will often release water vapor into the rest of the home.
Why is Poor Ventilation a Problem?
Odours remaining in the bathroom combined with an overall lack of efficient ventilation in a house can contribute to a generally damp atmosphere. This can create stale air in the building, which can cause discomfort and a risk of respiratory problems.
Condensation is a contributing factor towards damp and mouldy conditions. Created when steam from a room meets a cooler surface – like a window for example. Without good ventilation, condensation can cause considerable damage to a home like peeling wallpaper or the growth of black mould.
How to Stop Poor Ventilation
The Building Regulations Document F1 (2006 Edition) highlights the importance of ventilation in a home, and requires ventilation to be installed in kitchens and bathrooms.
All Vimark extraction fans comply with BS EN 60335-2-80, making them the perfect choice for removing humidity in key locations before it makes its way throughout a house.
Minimum Requirements
There are some specific requirements for ventilation within The Building Regulations Document F1 (2006) that need to be adhered to for different areas of a house.
Bathrooms/Shower Rooms require an intermittent fan capable of a minimum extract capacity of 15 litres/second or 8 litres per second for a continuous fan. For rooms without an openable window, the fan needs to be fitted with a 15 minute over-run timer.
Toilets (separate from a bathroom) require an intermittent and continuous fan to be capable of a minimum extract capacity of 6 litres/second. Just like a normal bathroom/ shower room, the fan needs to have a 15 minute over-run timer if there is no openable window in the room.
Utility Rooms require intermittent fans to be capable of a minimum extract capacity of 30 litres/second, while continuous running fans must have a minimum high rate of 8 litres/second.
Vimark’s wide range of intermittent extraction fans have a minimum extraction rate of 24 litres/second, making them all able to be used in bathrooms, shower rooms, and toilets that are separate from a bathroom.
For utility rooms, the Vimark 150m Axial Fan (6”) features a 71 litre/second extraction rate, making them the perfect choice for installation.
IEE Wiring Regulation 18th Edition
Much like the required minimum extraction rates for in The Building Regulations Document F1 (2006), there is specific guidance provided on bathroom zoning and ingress protection to ensure fans are installed correctly. Bathrooms are divided into zones, with the boundaries being drawn by the bath or shower basin, and the height above the floor.
Most Vimark fans are Zone 2, which extends to a height of 2.25 metres above the floor. These fans need to be at least an IPX4-rated fan, unless the area is in the splash zone.
Zone 1 is the exterior of the bath or shower tray up to a height of 2.25 metres. The new Vimark Zone 1 Fan products feature an improved IPX5 rating, allowing them to be placed closer to the humidity source.

IP Ratings
The IP (international protection) rating given to an enclosure states the degree of protection it offers by means of two digits. A summary of these is shown below; for a more detailed definition, see IEC 529: 1989, BS EN 60529: 1992.
FIRST DIGIT
Protection against solid foreign objects and access to hazardous parts
The first digit covers protection against penetration by solid objects, which includes hands and tools such as screwdrivers. At the lowest of seven levels, 0, no protection is offered, either of the equipment itself from damage by intrusion or of a person contacting live or moving parts. At the highest, 6, there shall be no entry of dust.
IP
0 No protection
1 Protected against solid objects up to 50mm, e.g. accidental touch by hands
2 Protected against solid objects up to 12mm, e.g. fingers
3 Protected against solid objects over 2.5mm, e.g. tools and wires
4 Protected against solid objects over 1mm, e.g. tools, wires and small wires
5 Protected against dust - limited ingress, no harmful deposits
6 Totally protected against dust
SECOND DIGIT
Protection against ingress of water
The second digit covers the degree of protection against the entry of water, on a progressive scale. For example, number 1 indicates that dripping water shall have no harmful effect. Alternatively, number 6 indicates water projected in powerful jets against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
IP
0 No protection
1 Protected against vertical falling drops of water, e.g. condensation
2 Protected against direct sprays of water up to 15º from the vertical
3 Protected against sprays of water up to 60º from the vertical
4 Protected against water splashed from all directions - limited ingress permitted
5 Protected against low pressure jets of water from all directions - limited ingress permitted
6 Protected against strong jets of water, e.g. for use on ship decks - limited ingress permitted
The letter X can be used in place of the first or second digit to indicate that tests have either not been made or are not applicable.
NOTE: In the event of additional holes being drilled/pierced or knockouts removed, suitable measures should be taken to restore the products to the original ratings.
IEC 529, BS EN 60529 does not apply to protection against the risk of explosion or conditions such as humidity, corrosive gases, fungi or vermin. In certain cases equipment designed to be mounted in an enclosure will contribute towards the stated IP rating (e.g. pushbuttons mounted in an enclosure). Different parts of enclosures can have different degrees of protection and still conform to the standard (e.g. enclosures with pre-drilled conduit entry).
Bathroom Zones
Bathroom zones are areas where electrical equipment must offer a certain degree of protection against water. The bathroom zone number refers to the amount of water likely to be present. The lower the zone number, the higher the IP rating needs to be.
ZONE 0
Zone 0 is anywhere inside a bathtub or shower tray itself that can hold water. For a shower without a basin, zone 0 extends to a height of 0.10 m to the full extent of the horizontal footprint of zone 1. Any current-using equipment used within zone 0 must be:
• protected by SELV at a voltage not exceeding 12 V AC, with its source outside of zones 0, 1 and 2
• protected against both partial and total immersion in water (minimum ingress protection rating of IPX7)
• be declared suitable for use in that zone by the manufacturer
• be installed fixed and permanently connected
ZONE 1
Zone 1 in simple terms, is the area directly above Zone 0 to the highest fixed shower head or a height of 2.25m from the finished floor level whichever is higher. Any fitting or appliance in Zone 1 must:
• have a minimum ingress protection rating of IPX4 (splash-proof) or IPX5 if equipment is likely to be exposed to water jets, for example, during cleaning
• be protected by SELV at a voltage not exceeding 25 V AC, with its source outside of zones 0, 1 and 2
• be declared suitable for use in that zone by the manufacturer
• fixed and permanently connected. Zone 1 does not include Zone 0
ZONE 2
Zone 2 is the area stretching to 600mm outside of the boundary of zone 1 to the highest fixed shower head or a height of 2.25m from the finished floor level whichever is higher. Any current-using equipment within Zone 2 must:
• have an ingress protection rating of at least IPX4 (splash-proof) or IPX5 if equipment is likely to be exposed to water jets, for example, during cleaning
• be protected by SELV at a voltage not exceeding 50 V AC, with its source outside of zones 0, 1 and 2
• Shaver supply units conforming to BS 61558-2-5 may be installed
ZONE 3
Zone 3 is anywhere outside zones 0, 1, and 2 (subject to specific limits) and where no water jet is likely to be used. No IP rating is required. However, if there is a likelihood of water jets being used for cleaning purposes in zones 1, 2 and 3, a fitting rated a minimum IP65 must be used.
Low voltage socket-outlets and fused connection units (fused spurs) may be installed at a distance exceeding 2.5 m horizontally from the boundary of zone 1.
