Depending on the size chosen, enclosures allow from 2 up to a maximum of 28 independent circuits to be connected. Intended for use with RCBOs and/or AFDD/RCBOs, each circuit is individually protected against both overload and earth leakage to prevent nuisance tripping originating from other circuits, providing the safest circuit protection solution. A 100A rated Type 2 SPD is factory fitted and utilises the standard busbar terminal connection as all other devices.
A Residual Current Circuit Breaker with overcurrent protection provides protection against overcurrents (overload of the cable and short circuit) and earth leakage currents (which pose a risk to people and animals or can result in fires). RCBOs will sense the fault and trip the circuit. In the case of the solid neutral RCBO only the Live conductor is isolated, whilst with the switched neutral RCBO both the Live and Neutral conductors are isolated, ensuring complete protection of people, animals, and connected equipment.
• Provides protection against earth fault/ leakage current, short circuit and overload
• Rated at 30mA for protection of humans and animals
• Provides protection to individual circuits offering the best technical solution within the household
• Single module width in compact format
• Switched Neutral RCBO isolates both Live & Neutral conductors when tripped
• Bidirectional RCBOs are suitable for Solar PV installations and EV charging installations where the vehicle & charger are V2G compatible
Arc Fault Detection Devices, integrated with an RCBO, are the latest technology providing all the attributes afforded by an RCBO. They provide added detection of dangerous serial and parallel arc faults that can develop within installations. Previously, arc faults occurring as a result of damaged insulation/conductors or loose connections have not always been detected so can develop over time, eventually resulting in a fire and damage to property, risking the lives of people and animals.

Reg 443.4.1
Protection against transient overvoltages shall be provided where the consequence caused by the over voltage could result in:
• Serious injury to, or loss of human life
• Significant financial or data loss
For all other cases, SPDs shall be provided unless the owner of the installation declares it is not required due to any loss or damage being tolerable, and they accept the risk of damage to equipment and any consequential loss.
Reg 531.3.2/3
Residual current protective devices shall be selected and erected such as to limit the risk of unwanted tripping.
The following should be considered:
1. The use of RCBOs for individual final circuits in residential premises.
2. In order to avoid unwanted tripping by protective conductor currents and/or earth leakage currents, the accumulation of such currents downstream of the RCD shall not be more than 30% of the rated residual operating current.
RCD TYPE
RCD type AC shall only be used to serve fixed equipment, where it is known that the load current contains no DC components.
NOTE: Examples of fixed equipment with a load current containing no DC components include, but not limited to, electric heating appliances, and/or simple filament lighting neither containing electronic components.
Reg 530.3.201
To address the issue of current flowing in two directions Amendment 3 of BS 7671 (BS 7671: 2018+A3:2024) was issued on 31st July 2024 and is to be implemented immediately. The amendment introduced one new requirement (Regulation 530.3.201) and two new definitions.
BIDIRECTIONAL PROTECTIVE DEVICE
A protective device where it is intended by the manufacturer that a source of supply is connected to either or both sets of connection terminals.
A protective device where it is intended by the manufacturer that a source of supply is only connected to one defined set of connection terminals.
Regulation 530.3.201 requires that due account is taken by the designer and installer of the likely direction of current flow and select protective equipment accordingly.
Reg 421.1.7
Arc fault detection devices (AFDD) conforming to BS EN 62606 shall be provided for single-phase AC final circuits supplying socket-outlets with a rated current not exceeding 32A in:
• Higher Risk Residential Buildings (HRRB)
• Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO)
• Purpose-built Student Accomodation
• Care Homes
For all other premises, the use of AFDDs conforming to BS EN 62606 is recommended for single-phase AC final circuits supplying socket-outlets not exceeding 32A. Where used, AFDDs shall be placed at the origin of the circuit to be protected. The use of AFDDs does not obviate the need to apply one or more measures provided in other clauses in BS 7671.
Reg 531.3.2/3
Previously, effectiveness under 643.7 and 643.8 was verified where the RCD disconnects within 40ms when tested at a current equal to or higher than five times its rated residual operating current.
This has now been aligned with 643.7 and 643.8 and the new regulations are as follows:
The verification of the effectiveness of the measures applied for additional protection is fulfilled by visual inspection and testing. Where RCDs are required for additional protection, the effectiveness of automatic disconnection of supply by RCDs shall be verified using suitable test equipment according to BS EN 61557-6 (see Regulations 643.1) to confirm that the relevant requirements of Chapter 41 are met.
Reg 411.3.3/4
Exceptions are now detailed requiring a risk assessment so certain socket circuits can be excluded, i.e. freezers, IT server rooms and control rooms. Outdoor lighting accessible by the public should have RCD protection.
Reference is now made to where ‘ordinary persons’ having access to sockets, these shall be RCD protected.
Where ‘competent/trained personnel’ are the only people accessing an area, i.e. control room, then RCDs can be omitted.
Bidirectional RCBOs are required when connecting the AC supply from an inverter battery to the main residential consumer unit. The bidirectional RCBO allows electricity to flow from the grid to the inverter battery. They also allow electricity generated by the PV panels, or stored in a battery, to flow back through the consumer unit either to the grid or to supply other circuits within the property.
Timeguard offer a comprehensive range of bidirectional 30mA Type A RCBOs in both B & C Curve.
To compliment solar installations, Timeguard also offer a PV Immersion Controller and a comprehensive range of IP66 AC & DC rotary isolator switches.
We are seeing a significant increase in the adoption of air source heat pumps to comply with the latest Building Regulations and Net Zero targets.
Modern heat pump inverters operate with switching frequencies in the region of 2kHz –16kHz, often outside of the scope of the existing Type B RCCB standard (BS EN 62423).
Air source heat pumps should be installed in accordance with BS 7671 and take account of manufacturer’s instructions.
BS EN IEC 60335-2-40:2023+A11:2023 (Household and similar electrical appliances. Safety - Particular requirements for electrical heat pumps, air-conditioners, and dehumidifier) requires the installation instructions to specify the RCD to be installed. Generally, for heat pumps intended to be installed in residential buildings, the installation should include an RCD with a rated residual operating current of no more than 30 mA.
Some manufacturers specify a Type B RCD suitable for 1KHz frequency whilst others specify a Type B with enhanced characteristics of 20 kHz or greater with a minimum tripping point of 150 mA above 1 kHz frequencies.
Contact Timeguard’s technical department for a consumer unit solution to accommodate an air source heat pump.
With the increase in popularity of electric vehicles, choosing the correct consumer unit to supply the charging point is very important.
Most EV charge points will incorporate RCD protection within them, but with the potential for DC earth leakage to be present within the circuit it is key that the correct upstream protection is provided.
Wiring Regs state that an EV should be on a dedicated circuit and protected by an RCD device that switches both Live & Neutral conductors in the event of a fault (Reg 722.531.3).
Utilising a Timeguard bidirectional Switched Neutral RCBO also allows V2H (vehicle to home) distribution of electricity between the vehicle and the home (requires compatible V2H vehicle and V2H EV charger).
