By Mark Flanagan It’s rare that someone offers you the chance to write about one of your favorite places rarer still that someone pays you to do it. That’s why I jumped at the chance to take care of this assignment: a piece on the Winery of Ellicottville. In a previous article on the Flickerwood Wine Cellar, I waxed poetic on the virtues of drinking wine; so, in the interest of brevity and originality, I’ll just remind you that I am an enthusiastic wine drinker. Any lengthy hyperbole on the subject should be forgiven. The Winery of Ellicottville is a welcoming place. While the bar section is indeed stoolless (wisely, I’d say, standing up after an hour of seated drinking can be surprising at best), there are a handful of seats and café tables in the window. People-watching is seldom so much fun as it is with wine. The staff is attentive and affable, quick with a suggestion and a tip on how best to enjoy the wine, or what notes of flavor often go undetected. In the often exclusionary world of snobbish wine connoisseurs, having folks that don’t talk down to you is a welcome surprise. Free Wi-Fi hums in the air while free pretzels cover the bar. If one (not me, this is like a hypothetical person) were to even eat a whole dish of said pretzels, the dish is refilled without judgment. Salt-lovers rejoice! While the atmosphere is enough to sell anyone, the wine is undoubtedly the reason why people keep coming back. My two favorites are the Sweetest Thing - an incredible sweet red that is served chilled, and Snow Fox - another jaw-tickling sweet wine, only this one is white. Are these bottles also their least expensive ones? Yes, but that’s just a happy coincidence. I’m lucky like that. They also offer a unique trio of EVL red, white and blue. The blue is made entirely with blueberries and is my go-to gift for friends and family (mostly because they inevitably end up sharing it with me). And of course, they offer their own delicious spins on traditional wines from Pinot Noir and Cabernet to Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. The winery also offers a large selection of specialty wines. Some of you may remember a delicious green wine that was released for last St. Patrick’s Day. The latest seasonal treat will be the Berry Hard Cider. Landing on shelves this September, the cider will be composed of apples, raspberries, and blueberries all grown locally. Effervescent and sweet (and pink if the rumors are to be believed), this latest beverage should not be missed by anyone. One of the last features of the winery that I would be foolish not to mention is their Wine Club. I’m still at a stage in my life where bulk-buys of wine are an untenable practice, but that doesn’t mean it has to be out of reach for you. Becoming a member of the Wine Club allows you to receive shipments of wine directly at your door, in amounts ranging from three bottles, up to twelve. There are four different packages to sign up for, each one allowing for customization until the shipment is perfect. You’ll also receive discounts, the ability to reserve the upstairs banquet room, advance notice of new releases, and much more. For more information on the benefits of the Wine Club, please visit the winery’s website. at www.wineryofellicottville.com. The Winery began as the dream of two men, passionate about wine. From vine to glass, that passion shines through in every aspect of their business. One taste of the fruits of their labor, and I’m sure that you’ll be as head-over-heels as I am with the Winery of Ellicottville. Wine tastings offered daily. Don’t Settle for Ordinary ...

Whether you choose to compete or spectate, there’s a few events this fall that you’ll want to be a part of CRISS CROSS CYCLOCROSS

HALLOWEEN HALF AND 5K: A SCARY GOOD TIME

By Greg Culver

By Spencer Timkey

Bicycle riders are a different breed. They love to punish themselves and test their endurance over grueling miles, climbs and adverse conditions. I don’t know how many times I’ve been asked by non-riders, “Why do you do that to yourself?” I always say it’s like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer; it just feels so good when you stop. We have garages full of bikes and each one is a necessity for reasons only understood by bikers.

Pardon the pun in the headline (I’m a sucker for lame puns) but there’s an event that you need to catch this fall season in Ellicottville - the Halloween Half Marathon & 5K. Now in its junior campaign, the race brings the very best out of the sport of running. Between smiling faces in costumes, a swath of people in bright shoes getting a fall sweat going or the (many) post-race beers being consumed, the Halloween Half became an instant success.

Now you’re probably familiar with road cycling and mountain biking, but have you ever heard of Cyclocross? Yes, C-Y-C-L-O. Not cycle and not psycho … Cyclocross. Parks, schools and grassy areas around the country are becoming the stages for spectator friendly and entertaining Cyclocross races. A Cyclocross bike is strangely similar to the 10-speed Schwinn you rode around as a teenager. The frame design is a bit more relaxed than a road bike and they have plenty of room for beefy cross tires. Most modern cross bikes are sporting disc brakes, but the traditional riders prefer good old rim brakes. Who needs brakes anyhow? All they do is slow you down. Don’t worry if you don’t have the right bike. Most cross racers start on a mountain bike or hybrid. If it rolls and pedals, you can usually race it. No kickstands or bar ends though. Racers wear traditional looking bike gear and pin numbers to their backs called bibs. Weird. So now the race course resembles a human sized mouse maze and is defined by thousands of feet of posts and barrier tape. The difference is that this maze goes over grass, roads, sand, rock, tree barriers, stairs … and there is no chunk of cheese at the end. Mud is usually part of the mix, considering most of these races are scheduled during fall months. Waves of riders race the course based on experience and category. At times the classes overlap which creates a nonstop stream of racers snaking around the course. Just to make it a little more difficult, racers will encounter barriers. Barriers can sometimes be ridden over; mostly crashed over so the tactic of choice is the dismount, run and hop. Oh yeah, don’t forget the bike. Once clear of the obstacle, carefully but quickly hop back on the bike and pedal your tail off to the next obstruction. Obstacles can be man-made barriers, logs, stairs hills - you name it. My favorite courses include items that reflect the flavor of the course. Picture this for second. A steady flow of riders around a snaky, muddy, crazy, climby course of mayhem. Drop in the spectators. Along the sides of the course, cross fans support/heckle racers in a loud and circus-like format. Nothing better than eating a big mud sandwich after a crash just to hear the roar of the crowd just a few feet away. Speaking of eating, there is cross tradition of the “Hand-Up.” The hand-up is where spectators hand racers various items as they ride by. There is no tactical advantage to accepting a hand-up but the draw is too great to resist. Liquid hand-ups are usually beer or booze of some sort. I’ve chased Jägermeister shots with a bacon hand-up before. Not sure why my brain thought THAT was a good idea. The 5-second-rule gets thrown right out the window since most of the snacks hit the ground at least once or twice. At technical, steep or sloppy areas, fans unleash a barrage of cheers, cow bells and horns. Some hand-ups are cash. Many pile-ups have been blamed on a dollar bill that was dropped on-course. My last cash hand-up was delivered by a Barbie doll on a stick. Again … weird. HoliMont will be hosting its first ever Cyclocross race on Saturday, October 8, 2016 during Ellicottville’s Fall Festival. If you’re looking for a fun way to bike in the fall or you’re just looking for something entertaining on a fall Sunday, check out the Cross Schedule and come see for yourself why cross racing is booming. Local cross info can be found at wnycyclocross.com.

Doug and Gwen Bush, the event’s creators and planners, have extensive experience in both the operation and participation of events such as this. Doug, a multiple Ironman athlete turned endurance athlete coach, has seen first-hand the type of structure and planning a race needs to succeed. “We wanted to bring a fun event to the community we love and call home,” Gwen said. “A half marathon is a great distance for running but it may be just a bit too much of a challenge for some runners, so we coupled it with an awesome 5K.” “Western New York is so great for running,” Gwen said. “Ellicottville - especially in the fall - is a gorgeous place to run. The crisp air, the leaves changing, town getting ready to go for winter … it all adds up to this perfect weekend for a Halloween event.” With any new event, getting people to sign up and commit can be difficult. As an initial estimate, the Bush’s came up with 200 as the number of people they thought would sign up. As the event got closer, the number grew … and grew … until it reached an astounding 800 (!). Winter in Ellicottville is obviously the busiest season, followed by summer. Spring and Fall, which are less apt to have the organized chaos you see during the busy seasons, was the perfect time to host a race. “There’s so much stuff to do here for our runners after the race is finished,” Gwen said. “The bars, restaurants, shopping. Most times, runners won’t come alone - they’ll bring their families or spouses. So that adds to the economic impact that we want to bring to town as well. This year, we’re expecting close to 1,800 visitors, which is fantastic.” “We’re so excited for this year’s race. We’ve got people coming from Buffalo, Pennsylvania, Canada, the Bronx … and even Australia! There will be a couple of surprises waiting for you on the course as well. It’s going to be great!” When you’re done racing (or watching!) head to Ellicottville Brewing Company for the after-party. EBC, an official sponsor of the EVL Halloween Half & 5K, plays host to the award ceremony (which begins at 12:30pm, after the 5K concludes). They’ll have cold post-race beers for you to enjoy, and the party goes until after the half marathoners are done. The Halloween Half & 5K takes place on Saturday, October 29 in downtown Ellicottville, NY. Sign up at www.evlhalf.com (plenty more race info on the site as well). There will be awards given out for: Best Group (two or more people), Best Individual, Funniest, Scariest, Most Girly, Best Kid & Best in Show.

BREAKAWAY

Downtown Ellicottville brings “Top New Band” to this year’s Rock N’ Roll Weekend

A Conversation with Bruce Decker HULICK: What a beautiful summer we’ve had, which must be great for you guys with all the festivals and outdoor events you play. Coming up soon is the Ellicottville Rock N’ Roll weekend Sept. 16-18. Have you played at that event before? DECKER: Yes. We’re playing the 1pm show this year. Typically when you do an afternoon slot you get people wandering by … we just kind of add to the ambiance. Some people will sit and listen for awhile, but it’s not like a regular gig where people show up as a crowd to dance and spend the evening, as opposed to people walking around a festival and notice saying, “Hey there’s a band over there.” HULICK: What’s good about you playing at that time is that your song list is quite extensive and you have something for every taste or genre. That lends itself to catching the interest of anyone walking by. DECKER: That’s right. If you don’t like that particular style or genre we are playing when you are passing by, stick around for a couple minutes and we will be playing something totally different. HULICK: I was looking at your song list and was wondering if you do the song “Walking In Memphis” by Marc Cohn? DECKER: (laughs) You know … we don’t, but oddly enough someone asked us if we knew it at a wedding we were doing. I’ve probably heard it before, but we never got around to learning it. It doesn’t ring a bell. HULICK: You’ve been doing this … gigging, as you say, for 40+ years and Johnny for 47 years. Have the other members been playing that long? DECKER: Pretty much. Most of us started playing in our teenage years and have continued to this day.

............................... SATURDAY, SEPT. 17 | 1:00 PM WINERY OF ELLICOTTVILLE MAIN STAGE Monroe Street By Melanie Hulick Visitors to this year’s Rock N’ Roll Weekend in Ellicottville are in for a treat! The popular Buffalo band, Breakaway, will be “adding to the ambiance of the festival” according to founding member Bruce Decker by phone. The five members include Decker (keyboards and vocals); Cory Klawon (lead vocals and rhythm guitar); Johnny Magnum (drums/percussion); Brian Kindzierski (guitar and vocals); and Mike Schill (bass and vocals). Playing songs from over five decades of music, Breakaway was named the Top New Band in both the Buffalo Music Awards and the Nightlife Awards. You name it and more times than not they play it … country, pop, rock, alternative rock, etc. Still, with playing from an extensive list of songs from all genres of music, they do receive requests from the audience, which Decker says they try and accommodate, and about 15% of the time they are able to. Decker and I talked about the many years of experience the band has, who he considers to be the practical joker of the group, why one of the members is called King Smarty Pants, playing the upcoming festival in Ellicottville, and the ever growing music scene in Buffalo. If you get a chance to come out and catch the band in Ellicottville during the Rock ‘N Roll Weekend, Decker has a suggestion for you in the following interview. If you aren’t able to attend the festival, you can find out where they are playing next on their website, www.breakawaybandrocks.com

..................................

For more information on this year’s Rock N’ Roll weekend in Ellicottville, visit www.ellicottvilleny.com.

HULICK: Were all of you born and raised in the Buffalo area? DECKER: No. I’m actually from Syracuse and I came to Buffalo to go to school at UB, met and married a local girl and stayed. But Brian, Mike, Johnny and Cory are all from this general area … you can consider those guys Western New Yorkers. HULICK: I read that Brian is called “King Smarty Pants”. Why would that be? DECKER: (laughs) Because he’s a smart-aleck. HULICK: (laughs) Well that explains it. DECKER: (laughs) He has a smart-ass answer for anything you want to throw at him. HULICK: (laughs) Is he also the “practical joker” of the band or do you have anyone who is? DECKER: That would be Johnny our drummer. HULICK: Do you get a lot of requests from the crowd? DECKER: Yes … basically how we run the show is … between all of us, we know a lot of songs and a lot of them aren’t even listed on our song list on our website. If someone comes up with a request we try to accommodate them of course … we want them to have a good time. Long ago I stopped looking at music and wondering who would ever play that trashy song. If it’s a good song to you … an important song to you, than that song matters. We’re basically a “try to have fun band” … we’re not trying to make an artistic statement, other than being as good as you can now. That being said … if you’re in a cover band you got two choices. You can try and emulate the recording as much as possible, or you can be like Zac Brown and kind of do your own version of cover songs. That works too. For us, we know everyone is busy and everyone’s got a lot on their plates and when you go out you don’t really want to re-learn how to like something that’s brand new. HULICK: I actually like cover bands, because you get to hear a little bit of everything … your favorites are in there and you know the song and you know the words and the beat. DECKER: Exactly. HULICK: Do you have a particular venue you like playing the most? DECKER: Honestly, we don’t have a favorite, per say … to us any place people are having fun is our favorite venue. HULICK: It’s amazing how far Buffalo has come with the development of the waterfront. There’s something going on almost every day and night not only at the waterfront, but at other venues like Artpark, Canal Side and the M&T Plaza lunch time music. It’s great that Buffalo is so involved in the music scene. DECKER: Yes, you are right. There is some nice stuff happening here. It’s very visible … and it’s good.

THE AUTUMN LOCAL’S Menu Pick of the Month

The subtle signs of season change are becoming more predominant with each passing day. What were squirt guns and pool toys on store shelves are now pens, folders, and composition books. What were excited stories about vacations near and far are now photo albums of smiling faces and coffee cup souvenirs. Then of course, following up from our last spotlight in The Summer Local, what were small sprouts are now fully matured fruit-bearing plants that are the pride of all home gardeners like me. The weeks of peas, beans, and squash have come and gone, so for our special this time around, I will be featuring a 12oz strip steak complimented by herbed heirloom carrots and purple majesty potatoes, with a fresh salad. In the picture to the right you are looking at vegetables that came out of my home garden. As there are not enough to make this a featured item on John Harvard’s menu, this edition will only be my pleasure in sharing with you the recipe and know-how of home gardening. In addition to our regular menu item, “steak frites”, our 12oz strip steak is a common celebrity in our daily dinner specials. Chef’s Note: Replace purple majesty potatoes with red or yellow potatoes and heirloom carrots with any common store bought carrot. Let’s get this harvest started …

FARM-TO-TABLE ... AND A 12 oz STRIP! Head out to the garden and trim up as much Swiss chard, lettuce, onions, grape tomatoes and cucumbers as you desire for your salad. If you have your own herb garden, then join me in making our own vinaigrette. We’ll start off with two cloves of garlic (because no recipe ever calls for just one), finely chopped. Basil, sage and oregano are my favorite herbs to use, but you can choose your own combination. Blend 1 tsp of each herb, both cloves of garlic, and one cup of vinegar at low speed. Use white vinegar to accent the bright green color or apple cider vinegar if you like a fruiter flavored vinaigrette. Turn the blender up to medium speed as you add one cup of extra virgin olive oil at a trickle. You will see it start to emulsify after a few short minutes. Drizzle your desired amount over your lettuce and Swiss chard, then top with the rest of your favorite garden vegetables. Gardener’s Note: Lettuce and Swiss chard are very easy to grow and will allow you to harvest from spring to fall, saving you from wasting greens in your fridge. To prepare the entrée, first boil your cleaned heirloom carrots and purple majesty potatoes in separate pots for 7-10 minutes or until slightly soft. (You can test them with a fork.) While the potatoes are still warm, toss them in extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper and fresh herbs. Doing so allows them to absorb the flavors. Roast them in the oven at 375° until golden brown. Now comes the fun part! Head outside and fire up the grill to get the steak going. Season your steak as preferred and place it on the grill. Allow your steak to rest for 5-10 minutes and finish with an herb butter from John Harvard’s (see our last feature from The Summer Local.) Chef’s Note: 110° for medium rare, 120° for medium, and 130° for medium well done. There may be some more tomatoes to pick and ears of corn on the stalk, but summer is quickly coming to an end. The pumpkins are showing more of their orange and Southern Tier Brewing Company’s “Harvest” is the newest refreshing brew on tap at John Harvard’s. I hope you can enjoy this recipe with your family as the nights get a little shorter and cooler. Staying fresh for one more season, Chef Rory Mosher

ELLICOTTVILLE MY EVER MUDDLED MIND

............................... KARI SERRAO | ENCAUSTIC, DECORATIVE On Exhibit at Gallery 14731 By Dash Hegeman Inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes. Life experiences dictate both knowledge and passions and so it only makes sense that much of what someone knows, what they feel, and how they view the world largely comes from how and where they grew up. Kari Serrao lives and creates art in Toronto, but she had the unique opportunity of growing up in the Caribbean. Her Trinidadian father retired from the Canadian Air Force when she was only five years old and decided to move back to the island of his roots. And so for the next thirteen years, Kari grew to know Trinidad - and all of its cultural magic - as her home and place of inspiration. It was there where she cultivated her love of the arts. In fact, she states, “It was pretty much the only subject that interested me as a child in school.” Kari Serrao’s “Whimsical Woodland” will be exhibited Sept. 7-Oct. 23 at Gallery 14731. An opening reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 from 2-5pm. Gallery 14731 is located at 5 E. Washington Street, downtown Ellicottville, NY. View other works by Kari at kariserrao.com.

One-on-One with Kari DASH: You state in your bio that by not doing, you are not being. At what point in your life did you come to this realization and how has it shaped your career? KARI: I think I started feeling that way about 10 years ago, at the time I had been working for an antique dealer for a number of years - I began working there as a decorative painter but ended up in a management position and was doing very little that was creative. I just felt like there was a huge void in my life. DASH: You grew up in the Caribbean. What made you choose Toronto as a place to attend university? The two locations seem … drastically different. KARI: I ended up in Toronto because I had decided I wanted to go to OCA (now OCADU). It was the only school I applied to; not getting in wasn’t an option because my parents relocated to Nova Scotia and I didn’t want to move there (leaving Trinidad was really tough, it was a wonderful place to grow up back then). DASH: Who are your artistic inspirations? KARI: That’s a tough one. There are many artists whose work I admire, most of the imagery that I’m drawn to is dark though, a little disturbing and my work is not at all like that. They’re also very diverse in style - from Hieronymus Bosch to Chaim Soutine, Jean Michel Basquiat to Tony Scherman. The fashion designer Alexander McQueen was genius!

DASH: What other hobbies occupy your time? Do they offer any sort of added inspiration to your artwork? KARI: I read quite a bit; historical fiction is a definite inspiration when it comes to my latest series, “The Whimsical Woodland”. Other than that and hitting the gym when I can, my time is pretty much taken up with my painting and family. DASH: Encaustic art - waxed based painting. How did you discover this medium and what is it that makes you prefer it? KARI: I took one look at Canadian painter Tony Scherman’s work and was immediately attracted to the texture and depth. At the time (2009) I hadn’t painted beyond the furniture work and decorative painting I was doing and really wanted to get back to fine art, but I wanted to use a medium that was completely new to me. It had been so long that I didn’t want a reference point, something to make me feel like I had totally lost it. I looked up encaustic classes in Toronto and found one at Toronto School of Art’s continuing education program so I signed up. Initially I thought it was impossible, being a representational painter who was used to working in open mediums like oil; the immediate drying of the wax really threw me. I persevered and now really respond to the immediacy of it. I’m not a very patient person; waiting for paint to dry is not part of my make up. I also love the texture one can get with it. DASH: Elaborate on your Decorative work, please. I’m assuming this is all commissioned work, but how did you start doing this? You’ve clearly done a fair amount of it. Is it something that you do regularly? KARI: I started doing faux finishes and murals back in the ‘90’s when it was very in vogue here in Toronto; this was shortly after graduating from art college. I was working for an interior designer at the time who also had a retail decor shop. I did some work in her home, it was photographed by a design publication here and I started getting calls. After a few years I felt I needed more stability regarding work. At the time I lived alone, worked alone and it was pretty draining. That’s when I started working in the antique industry. I started doing it again a few years ago when a designer friend was re-doing a chateau in the south of France and I realized how much more I enjoyed it than working retail part-time. Now I do it fairly regularly. There are a few really talented designers here in Toronto who I work with, so when I’m not madly painting getting ready for a show, I’m working on a project or two. DASH: What’s your favorite piece that you’ve done? KARI: That’s a tough one. I usually have a favorite from each series - my favorite pet portrait is of our bull terrier Lola. It was my first and a gift for my husband for Christmas the year I started painting again. It’s certainly not the best portrait I’ve done, but it’s special to me. Of the “grey barn” series it would be “Cyrus” the big white steer. I still really love the big emu/ostrich from the “red barn” series, and so far from the “Whimsical Woodland” my favorite is still the first of the series, “Beauty”, the hare with the white collar. DASH: Speaking of Whimsical Woodland, that’s your most recent series, correct? What put you on the path to create that elaborate 27-piece series? KARI: It is (the most recent). This series was actually influenced from two very different decorative paining projects. One, a mural I did in France last summer in which a rabbit with an Elizabethan collar was included at the client’s request, and the second done early this year - a nursery mural in Montreal, which featured a few animals including a deer and a rabbit. The client requested that I put the antlers on the rabbit not the deer. The murals were very different - one sophisticated and monochromatic, the other polychrome and somewhat more playful. On the drive back to Toronto from Montreal I started thinking about merging the two rabbits together in an encaustic painting. I wasn’t necessarily thinking of a series, just the one painting (that was “Beauty” the antlered hare). Once I started I couldn’t stop. They just sort of flowed out of me, one more elaborate than the prior. I’m pretty sure there are more than 27 now that I’m getting ready for the show at Gallery 14731. DASH: Describe your process a little if you wouldn’t mind. KARI: I always work from photos. (I’ve got too much going on in my head to focus on an image in there.) I find a pic of a particular animal that speaks to me and go from there. I work on wooden panel boards, drawing the image in an outline (with the Whimsical Woodland series I work from 3 different images, one of the animal, one of the costume and another of the antlers). I then paint the background around the image and melt it with a heat gun, this smooths it out and creates an atmospheric quality to it. Next I begin painting the image from the top down, completing a section at a time, almost as though I break the piece down into many individual little paintings. If working in smaller pieces, I may work on a couple at a time. My studio is the size of a postage stamp so the larger pieces are quite challenging, I generally end up painting parts of them upside down … DASH: Sounds like art isn’t your only talent. Aside from online and your showing at Gallery 14731, where can people find your work? KARI: Canvas Gallery here in Toronto has a few pieces and I regularly show at group shows in the city throughout the year. This year in particular has been a busy one for shows for me! DASH: Lastly, why do you consider your mind to be muddled? KARI: I’ve got a lot going on in there! I find focusing a challenge, which may seem odd because I am able to produce a great deal of work which one would think requires a great deal of focus, but for me it’s all more intuitive and not all that cerebral. I’m given to rambling at times both verbally and in thought, maybe because I tend to do too many different things at once, I’m not sure …

GRANNY’S BOOT ANTIQUES Folk art, antiques, harvest festivals + an outdoor art maze to ‘boot’

NIGHT LIGHTS AT GRIFFIS SCULPTURE PARK Experience the park in a different light

By Mary Heyl

By Spencer Timkey

Tucked away at 10761 Miller Road (the old Route 219) is one of the best-kept secrets in Springville, NY: Granny’s Boot Antiques. A mother/daughter owned business that will soon be celebrating its 50th anniversary, Granny’s Boot is also home to the Grevpode Gallery and the site of several different artisan festivals throughout the year. This fall, Granny’s Boot is hosting two harvest festivals: Saturday, Sept. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 15 - both from 111am-3pm. In the words of owner Deb Wilson, “The joy of our festivals is that we truly have something for everyone to enjoy!” If the store’s unique outdoor art maze isn’t enough to draw your attention, its fun name certainly is. In England, a “boot” also refers to the trunk of a car. “Boot” sales are outdoor marketplaces where people sell items out of the trunk of their cars, such as antiques and household goods, similar to flea markets or garage sales in the United States. According to Wilson, there are two “grannies” that the name refers to: Wilson and her mother, the first Granny who opened the store’s original location in Chatham, Ontario in 1967. Wilson and her mother live in Ontario throughout the week where they oversee the Ontario location (now in Vineland), and during the weekends, they live in Springville, where they have been operating this location for six years. Wilson’s mother, who has been an artist for seven decades, is one of the artists whose work is on display in the Springville location’s Grevpode Gallery. The name “Grevpode” is a combination of the names of all the artists whose work is on display: Grevpode has two artists in residence plus four other artists whose work makes up the store’s unique gallery. In Wilson’s words, “We’re not your typical four-white-walls gallery with a few pieces of artwork.” Rather, the gallery has around 900 pieces of folk art, plus the outdoor art maze that visitors are welcome to explore! The 100-year-old-barn located on the four-acre Springville property contains three floors of antiques, an incredible inventory that is owned solely by Wilson and her mother. “We call it a unique selection of antiques,” explained Wilson, “because we like to have items that most people have never seen before. Our eclectic collection isn’t what you would find in other antique stores.” Weekends are a great time to explore Granny’s great selection of art and antiques: the Springville location is open Fridays from noon-4pm and Saturdays from 10am-3pm. However, Wilson says that “as long as the gate is open,” visitors are welcome! Six times a year, the property is opened for festivals: two festivals in May, and a festival once a month from June through October. “This is the first year that we’ve had six festivals, as we’ve always had the Pioneer Festival in May where we have spinners, weavers, and butter-making,” explained Wilson. Wilson, who co-chairs the festivals along with local artist Mary Dallas, said the five other festivals are themed; the harvest theme of September’s and October’s festivals includes a farmer’s market at both festivals. Each festival features the work of ten to twenty vendors and artisans from basket-makers to soap-makers to alpaca farm owners. Live music, food, and a history/educational portion for children are also incorporated in each event. Wilson explained that at each one of their family and pet-friendly festivals, a booth spot is given to a non-profit organization, such as the Boys and Girls Club, dog rescues, and other charitable groups, to highlight the work of that organization and provide an opportunity to raise money through fundraisers like raffles. For information about Granny’s Boot’s festivals visit www.tmemfestivals. com. Interested vendors are invited to participate in these semi-juried festivals by emailing tmem@vaxxine.com. Wilson encourages our readers to visit Granny’s Boot Antiques’ website at www.grannysbootantiques.com and check out Granny’s Boot Antiques’ Facebook page. Visitors can call Granny’s Boot toll free at 1-877-211-0735 throughout the week, as this phone number is for both the Ontario and Springville locations. Wilson and her mother’s oneof-a-kind antique store is a must-see experience for anyone who appreciates antiques, art, and the outdoors. “At our May 21 festival, we even had a black bear cub ramble through the yard,” said Wilson. “You never know what you’re going to see at Granny’s Boot!”

Wed/Thur 7:30-9:30pm | Fri/Sat 7:30-10pm | Sun, Oct. 9, 7:30-10pm Night Lights will return to Griffis Sculpture Park this fall, and I can guarantee it is an experience like nothing you’ve witnessed before. A portion of the park will be transformed with creative lighting that will illuminate the trails and its larger-than-life sculptures. Coupled with live performances, Night Lights showcases creativity at its finest in a natural setting amongst the beauty of Griffis Sculpture Park. Doug Sitler, Night Lights creator and exhibitionist, recently sat down with The Summer Local to talk about the event and how it came to be. SPENCER: What brought you to do Night Lights at Griffis? DOUG: I’ve been a long-time volunteer at the park. It made sense to combine what we have to offer with the sculpture park, that those two things would make a perfect marriage. We like that it’s closer to Buffalo and feel it adds to the Ellicottville area as well. SPENCER: Where are you from originally? DOUG: I’ve been in Buffalo the last 25 years (since college), but I grew up in Frewsburg. SPENCER: What kind of artwork will be displayed? DOUG: We’re going to be bringing in mainly lights to illuminate the sculptures, but there will be some small performances, like dancers. We’re getting commitments now, and there will be surprises throughout the show. Other Night Lights hire a lot of local musicians, but the sculpture park isn’t set up for that - it’s not the vibe we’re going for. A little movie area, as well as a sculpture park informational movie … people can walk around, learn about the park and what they just walked through … highlight some of the things that Griffis created. The park is around 50 years old! SPENCER: How do you keep the lights on? DOUG: We use about a mile and a half of power lines and cords. We also use 95% LED lights. We’re down to a few that aren’t LED, between the low power and the electrical grid, that’s how we’re able to do it. The LED doesn’t draw as much power, so it’s a little more environmentally friendly. SPENCER: What kind of inspiration led you to Night Lights? DOUG: There’s an Art Installation in Providence, RI called Waterfire that I went to in 1998. It’s a half-mile of walking along the river with torches out in the middle. When I walked through it, it left such an impression on me - like walking through an art project. We wanted to create something similar … almost an experience. Light and nature mingle together so well. We’re not competing with Vegas - we want it to be a relaxing night. SPENCER: What other venues have hosted you? DOUG: Probably one of my favorites is the Erie County Botanical Gardens, where we did a show a couple years ago. It was wildly successful, and that might be my favorite one. As of right now, we’ve sold (throughout the entirety of the Night Lights exhibit) over 39,000 tickets, meaning we’re knocking at 40,000. If you had told me that when I first started, I would’ve labeled you as crazy. Over $150,000 has been raised and donated to charity. This is the type of thing that gets people out of their houses, trying something new, going to a spot they’ve never been for. I love that about this. It helps the local economies out as well, and gives people something new to look forward to or get them out for a repeat visit. For those planning to attend this year’s Night Lights at Griffis Sculpture Park, please remember to dress appropriately for the weather and bring a flashlight. In the case of heavy rains, Night Lights may be cancelled. Follow Griffis Sculpture Park on Facebook for updates. Griffis Sculpture Park is located at 6902 Mill Valley Road, East Otto, NY 14729. Learn more about Griffis Sculputre Park at www.griffispark.org. For more about Night Lights including pricing, etc. go to www.nightlightshq.com.

Pumpkinville

welcomes the Peanuts Gang

Apparently Linus believes that Pumpkinville truly has one of the most “sincere pumpkin patches” in America. That’s why the iconic cartoon is partnering with Pumpkinville this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the animated film, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”. Pumpkinville is one of 100 locations across the nation to receive the distinction. In honor of the selection, Cattaraugus County’s largest fall tourist attraction has designed their six-acre corn maze with a distinct Peanuts theme. It features Snoopy and the logo of WYRK-FM Country 106.5, the maze sponsor. “Pumpkinville has meant Fall Family Fun for decades,” said Dan Pawlowski, who owns the nationally recognized, agri-tourism attraction with his wife Diane and their children. “Adding the Peanuts gang to our 200-acre pumpkin farm and attractions will make it extra special for kids and adults alike. After all, we grew up with the Peanuts gang.” Pumpkinville will open for the season on Saturday, Sept. 17 and run through Oct. 31 from 9am-7pm daily, rain or shine. The oldest, continuously working pumpkin farm in New York State draws 100,000 people during its six-week season. Enjoy many free activities, such as the punchin’ pumpkin race, singing chicken show, Perky the Talking Pumpkin, farm animals, corn teepee, storyland, kiddie spookum barn, train play area and more! Purchase an activity wristband for the full experience which allows all-day use of the pumpkin jumpin’ pillows, corn maze, farm pedal carts, country hayrides and cow train. Activities connected with the “50 Years of The Great Pumpkin” will be prominent throughout Pumpkinville. Great Pumpkin Bingo will now be a part of the 6-acre corn maze. Search for signs in the maze that tell you what squares to scratch off. “If you complete the bingo game correctly, you’ll be eligible to win a grand prize trip for four to see the Peanuts Gang at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California,” said Diane Pawlowski. On select weekends, the Peanuts characters will be walking around Pumpkinville meeting kids of all ages. There will be photo ops with a Peanuts characters background as well as Peanuts decorations throughout Pumpkinville, which includes painted pumpkins and hay bale art. A wide variety of Peanut’s 50th Anniversary of the “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!” merchandise ranging from t-shirts and mugs to books and toys will also be available for sale. Of course, families will continue to enjoy the pick-your-own pumpkin patch and the opportunity to watch the farm’s antique cider press in action. And when hunger strikes, the Pumpkinville Grill will be burning hot with all your favorite grilled foods, or scoot over to the Snack Shack for a tasty treat. Visitors can also purchase and take home freshly made fudge, caramel and candy apples, homemade pies, kettle corn, pumpkin donuts and other baked goods, as well as fresh apple cider by the gallon. A former winner of New York State’s Agri-Tourism Business of the Year, Pumpkinville is just minutes from downtown Ellicottville, at 4844 Sugartown Road in Great Valley, NY. Search them on Facebook and the web at pumpkinville.com, or call 716-699-2205 for additional details.

Ride the Open Road and help fight hunger

It’s time to polish those pipes, strap on those helmets and ride for the cause. Saturday, September 17 is the date for the 16th Annual Food Bank of Western New York Motorcycle Run & Rally. Net proceeds of the 16th annual Motorcycle Run & Rally will help the Food Bank of WNY as it continues to fight hunger one day at a time. The Food Bank provides nutritious food and resources to hungry Western New Yorkers through its 329 member agencies, including soup kitchens, food pantries, and shelters throughout Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties. Through these agencies, the Food Bank can assist as many as 129,000 individuals, including more than 44,000 families, more than 45,000 children and nearly 17,000 seniors in any given month. More information on the Food Bank of WNY can be found at www.foodbankwny.org. The Bear Brick of Cattaraugus County, The Pad of Chautauqua County, Second Gear of Erie County and American Harley of Niagara County will serve as starting rally points to ride and converge at the Faulkner American Legion Post 880 of Eden, NY for the 8am registration. The event will host a cruise-in, vendor fair and a delicious breakfast will also be available from the Post 880’s kitchen from 8am until noon. Everyone’s invited. Kick stands are up at 11am for the scenic motorcycle dice run, which includes stops at Gowanda Harley Davidson, The Pad, Whiskey Hill Saloon and Merritt Winery before ending at the Sunset Bay Beach Club’s Rally at 1028 South Shore Drive in Irving. Not riding? Everyone is welcome to attend the Rally at the Beach Club that kicks off at 2pm. Help welcome the riders as the return from the run and join in the rally that will continue until 8pm. The Rally will feature basket raffles, FUNdraising, run prizes, contests, live entertainment including the band Stealin’ taking the stage at 5pm, finger food, a cash bar and more. Over the last 15 years, the Food Bank of WNY Motorcycle run has raised over $90,000, helping the Food Bank of WNY provide approximately 555,000 meals throughout Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties! “A Match Made in Las Vegas!” Barbara & Frank, The Concert that Never Was … It is unlikely the two powerhouse voices of the century would have ever shared the same stage … until now! Two great artists paying tribute to their characters, singing the most memorable music and songs ever written, they never worked together, exactly.
