Mulching Quaker playground (left). Planting the butterfly garden (right).

By Mary Heyl For many, there is no better retreat than an afternoon or a weekend spent at Allegany State Park (ASP). From hiking to camping and everything in between, the park has so much to offer visitors and western New York residents alike. National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 28 is the perfect time to celebrate – and give back – to Allegany State Park and help preserve it for future generations. Hosted by ASP’s Environmental Education Department, this year marks the 15th year of ASP’s participation in the nation’s largest one-day event designed to give people the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of service projects that enhance both the park and the visitor experience. Environmental educator Adele Wellman is looking forward to this year’s event, which takes place on the Quaker Lake side of the park. Planned activities include cleaning up, weeding and maintaining the pollination/hummingbird gardens at the Quaker Museum. Volunteers will also be working together to remove invasive species around Science Lake and the School in the Forest foundations, pick up litter around Quaker Lake and creeks, clean out fire pits and grills, install new blue bird boxes and help with trail work. Wellman explained that ASP alternates the projects each year from the Red House side of the park to the Quaker side. “With the help of many volunteers and staff, we have been able to tackle large projects such as refurbishing Sweetwater Spring Monument and hand brushing miles of hiking, biking and snowmobile trails,” she said. “In 2007, the big project was building an ADA sensory trail and planting the area with hundreds of perennials attractive to both humans and butterflies.”

Wellman noted that the day – while a productive one—is also a fun social event that many look forward to each year. “It’s a great way to meet new people and see returning volunteers who have become friends over the years,” she said. “Many of the volunteers tell me stories of when they first came to Allegany or about the plants or animals they have seen. They enjoy this park as much as I do. I believe we all enjoy being able to take a few hours to give back to a place that gives us joy.”

Indeed, many aspects of the park that visitors may take for granted are the result of volunteers’ hard work each year. “Facility buildings, wooden guard rails, cabins and trail signs have been painted over the years,” Wellman noted. “We go through a lot of green and brown paint!” She explained that “litter patrol” is assigned to high traffic areas like the lakes, creeks and cabin trails. Volunteers have also assembled picnic tables and removed invasive species like multi flora rose and Japanese honeysuckle. “Over 200 native trees have been planted to prevent erosion,” she added.

Wellman hopes to have 50 to 100 volunteers this year. “Many people come from Erie County and make a whole weekend out of it,” she said. “We get schools and college groups, too.” Importantly, volunteers of all ages are welcome, but anyone under the age of 18 must have their legal guardian sign a volunteer agreement form. Every child gets a gift for participating. Pre-registration is open now until Monday, Sept. 23 by calling the Environmental Education/Recreation Department at 716-354-9101 ext. 236. Walk-ins the day of the event are also welcome. Day-of registration begins at 9am at the Quaker Picnic Shelter, and projects run from 10am-3pm with a free dinner for volunteers at 4pm.

SUMMER HOURS: Open Thursday / Friday / Saturday Bar opens at 4:30pm / Dinner starts at 5:00pm

Volunteers should wear work clothes and sturdy shoes and bring gloves (if they have them), a lunch, water and a snack. The event takes place rain or shine. For more information, search Allegany State Park on Facebook or email alleganysp@parks.ny.gov.

A BOOKSTORE IN ELLICOTTVILLE!

Gently Used Books, Vinyl, and Nostalgia in Abundance

McGee’s Books and Curiosities to open in Downtown Ellicottville this October

By Louisa Benatovich A small town business-scape is a unique one, to say the least. Thriving on the symbiosis of interconnected commerce, each locally-owned restaurant, boutique, and bar must find its perfect niche to survive. That is what makes Ellicottville special: the charming brick storefronts lining Washington Street, the outdoor patios, the inviting boutique window displays. We are the siren call to even the most stoic of Route 219 travelers, urging them to stop and smell the roses. Though some beloved businesses have existed in Ellicottville for decades, there are also those that come and go. With the loss of equilibrium from the departure of the Ameri-Can store, the whole town was thrown for a loop. The newly-vacant space on Ellicottville’s main drag, with its paper-covered windows beckoning mysteriously, left locals and tourists alike wondering: “What will happen now?” After weeks of waiting, we have an answer to the heavily-anticipated question. Enter Scotty McGee, a man with some books and a dream. Looking at a rough sketch (pictured above) of what will soon be “McGee’s Books and Curiosities” is enough to inspire a chill of anticipation. With its fantastical name and charming font, the store, though colorless in the image, looks warm and inviting. Set to sell gently-used books, vinyl, and record players, the shop hopes to be a relaxing escape after a long day of outdoor activity. “We want to add to the whole experience of Ellicottville,” Scotty says. A born-and-bred Houstonite, Scotty was not, by any stretch of word, expecting to end up in a small Western New York town, much less be opening a bookshop there. “When I started college,” says McGee, “I wanted to be a pediatrician. I was majoring in Biochemistry and filling all the Pre-Med requirements.” While completing his degree, Scotty began business marketing nutritional supplements. At the beginning of his last semester of undergrad, the very same company gave him an opportunity to move to Asia. “A lot of people thought I was crazy,” he says, smiling, “but I withdrew from classes and moved to Asia for a couple of years, continuing to work for that same business.” “When I got back,” he continues, “a partner and I started a business ourselves. We began teaching other companies how to market their products, as well as offering marketing services. I traveled a lot with that business, and it was while traveling to Maine that I met Rachel Northrup, my fiancée. Rachel, an Ellicottville native herself, currently owns the Purple Doorknob Sock Shop on Monroe Street in downtown Ellicottville. A local staple, the distinctly colored facade of

the building dares passersby to enter, few leaving empty-handed. “When it was time to get serious with Rachel,” says Scotty, “it made sense for me to move to Ellicottville in 2016. Plus, after buying the proper clothing for the winter, I loved Ellicottville,” he chuckled. “(Being from the South, I learned you have to buy your winter clothes for the North in the North!) I love the community and the fact that I run into people everyday that I have now become friends with.” Scotty and Rachel had their first child, Easton, in 2016. The following year, Scotty’s business partner bought him out of their marketing company, and the couple found a house in the area. For the past three years, Scotty and Rachel have been content running the Purple Doorknob and hanging out with their son. As a family, they love to be in nature: hiking, biking, and swimming in the pond. When he has time, Scotty likes to hit the golfing green. As the months went by, it seemed that this young and happy life was full to the brim, but it wasn’t, not entirely. “Rachel and I have always been avid readers,” begins Scotty, “and about a year ago while Rachel was going through a "minimalist" phase, she started getting rid of everything in our house. I decided to clear out our bookshelves by selling the books online before they disappeared, too. After those books sold, I was inspired and started finding other sources for books. Long before this happened, Rachel and I would talk about what other type of store we could open in Ellicottville. So when the books were doing so well online, we started playing around with the idea of selling books in the basement of the Purple Doorknob. But before we implemented it, we found out about a space that had just become available. It was in a great location on the main drag, and Rachel's family, the Northrups, have a history in the building. Her great uncle used to run a millinery (hat store) there, and her grandfather Wilbur "Doc" Northrup, the dentist in town way back when, used to have his office upstairs above it. It all really appealed to her ... and we just decided to go for it.” After months of preparation, the big day is inching closer. McGee’s plans to open in October, with a big grand opening event scheduled for the first weekend of November. “We hope someday to become a staple in Ellicottville,” says Scotty, “a place people have to visit while they’re in town.” But for now, Scotty, Rachel, and Easton are working hard to put the finishing touches on their dream. In fact, if you’re looking to get rid of some books or vinyl, the bookshop is accepting donations. Feel free to drop them at the Purple Doorknob or call 716-687-8238 for more information. Otherwise, be sure to stop by 11 Washington Street on opening day, and let McGee’s Books and Curiosities astound and amaze.

EVERYTHING SUMMER MUST GO!!! 5 Monroe St., Ellicottville, NY 716-699-2054

By Greg Culver, HoliMont It takes a special breed of person to go out and punish their body on purpose. Cyclocross racing is a hot topic and the HoliCX race at HoliMont has become a popular stop in the WNY Series. You can find 16 different races in the series this year, but only one punishes you like the race at HoliMont. Whether it’s the weather or the course, it’s always an event to behold. You wouldn’t think that a bike race that lasts 45 minutes to an hour would hand out such a butt whipping, but when you see the faces of racers in the “pain cave”, you start to get it. Imagine being shot out of a cannon on a bicycle wearing spandex and then having to navigate a zig zag course filled with all sorts of obstacles that try to knock you down. To top it all off, you’re in a packed crowd of racers all trying to beat you to the end. The end is defined by how many laps the fastest racer can do in the allotted time. To make matters even more fun (or worse, depending on how you look at it), spectators cheer, heckle and try to distract you. It’s a sprint race that lasts longer than your self-preservation instincts want to allow. The mental and physical demands make it a very strategic style race. I race. I’m a cyclocross racer. I constantly talk to myself during the race. I push myself even though it hurts. I take chances that I know could end up leaving me in more pain. Even though I’ve been doing it for years, I still make mental mistakes, like passing someone in my class too soon and blowing it in the end because I ran out of gas. Not drinking enough water before the race is a classic mistake and the result can be massive cramps due to dehydration. Bike preparation is key since the last thing you want to talk about at the end of the day is how your bike let you down. Loser! So why would anyone want to do this? I believe it’s the sense of accomplishment, but more than anything, it’s the camaraderie. Even when competition is at its pinnacle, racers support and encourage each other to keep going, push harder and by the way, nice job. At the end of the day everyone laughs about the stupid things we do when the only thing you can focus on is pedaling more. One popular bike company has a slogan: “Shut Up Legs.” As for spectating, that is an event all by itself. At some races you’ll see spectators handing out prizes as racers go by. These prizes run the gambit from beer to cash. Lookers-on ring cowbells, blow horns, encourage and heckle racers. There have been times while racing, I’m laughing even though I can barely breathe. The race audience often finds the hardest section of the course to crowd around and make it more fun and louder. From across the course you’ll here cheers as racers summit the climb or navigate a muddy pit of nastiness. Do yourself a favor and come to HoliMont on October 19, 2019. The race takes place from 9am-2pm in the area near the bottom of our Sunset and WestMont slopes. New for this year is an unsanctioned format that allows unlicensed riders to take part in the fun for no additional cost. There will be an open mountain bike class for those who don’t own a “cyclocross” style bike. You can register online, the preferred method, at bikergeg.com. Just search HoliCX. If you’re the type that makes last minute decisions, we do accept walk-up registrations, but it does cost an extra 10 bucks. We couldn’t do this race without the support of our sponsors including Excelsior Orthopedics, Kind Human Bicycles, Loud Performance Bicycle Shop, Kickstand Culture, Dina’s, 42 North among others, some of which will be on-site with treats, beer and goodies available. Find out more by calling HoliMont at 716-699-2320 or going to our website at www. holimont.com.

ELLICOTTVILLE’S 3 ANNUAL LACROSSE FESTIVAL rd

On September 20-22, Hundreds of Lacrosse Players will Converge in Ellicottville and Continue the Event’s Successful Run

#ellicottvillelacrossefestival www.ellicottvillelacrosse.com

By Spencer Timkey It came about by pure happenstance. Scouting potential locations for a new lacrosse festival, Mike Riorden and Ryan Powell walked into Finnerty’s Tap Room to grab a bite to eat. Noticing some lacrosse paraphernalia adorning the wall above the bar, a simple comment to the bartender turned into an introduction with Finnerty’s Freddie Pawlikowski. That introduction turned into more beers, in-depth discussions on lacrosse, and the potential for Ellicottville to play host. Fate has a wild way of lining things up.

Finnerty’s will act as an unofficial home base for the festival while it’s here. The lacrosse circle is a semi-small one, so there aren’t that many degrees of separation between players, coaches and families. Friday night’s welcome party acts as one giant reunion. Pawlikowski, a former All-American himself at Hobart College, loves the camaraderie. “For our bar team, I get a lot of my old playing buddies to come in for the weekend,” he said. “It’s a giant reunion. And the fact that we’re seeing all of these teams and families come to Ellicottville to play and celebrate the sport we all love, it’s pretty cool.”

Now entering its third year, the Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival returns September 20-22. At first glance, you wonder why a small ski town in the southern tier of western New York would be a match for a lacrosse tournament. Ellicottville Central School doesn’t have a team, and the sport isn’t as prevalent here than other nearby towns.

Last year’s festival saw 45 teams come to play, ranging from youth to high school to adult. Between the three field locations (village park, Holiday Valley and Ellicottville Central), there will always be multiple games played at the same time, and turnover is quick to ensure every game can get in. Eventually, the festival could grow to up to 70 teams.

The festival’s directors, Riorden and Powell, have lived and breathed lacrosse their entire lives. Riorden, recently inducted into the Rochester Sports Hall of Fame, uses his lifetime of experience to help grow the game. And Powell’s exceptional lacrosse resume includes being named All-American a whopping four times at Syracuse University before a 12year professional career. These guys are the real deal.

“They’ve had growth each year, which helps solidify the festival’s success and impact,” said Brian McFadden, Executive Director of the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce. “And it speaks volumes about our town and community. We’ve had great comments on the event — visitors really feel embraced by the town.”

Going to similar tournaments in places like Vail and Lake Placid led them to choose Ellicottville as the home for their new festival. The similarities were striking. The lodging capabilities, food options and general vibe of the area made the decision an easy one.

McFadden estimates the economic impact to be significant. Last year’s festival brought in 1,700 players plus friends and families for a total attendance of around 3,000. Based on average estimated daily spends for this type of sporting event the impact is just under $900,000, a significant number for a middle of September weekend.

“When I was at Franny’s (St. Francis in Buffalo), there were maybe 8-10 teams in all of western New York,” Pawlikowski said. “Now, almost every school in the northtowns has a team. The game is growing so fast, and it’s credit to guys like Mike and Ryan that continue to get kids involved and playing.”

Divisions range from youngsters to adult, with a women’s division added last year. Teams come from all over, including western New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Ontario and as far south as Maryland. Games will be played at the three locations, and will take place all day Saturday and Sunday.

ELLICOTTVILLE LIVING TOUR SEPTEMBER 14 • 9am-4pm

Take a tour inside some of the beautiful living spaces that Ellicottville has to offer By Mary Heyl Anyone who has ever been in the market for a new home knows that one of the most challenging elements of the search can be the open house experience. From scheduling conflicts to confusing directions, viewing multiple homes for rent or sale can be an overwhelming experience, but the Ellicottville LIVING Tour is about to make the process a whole lot easier. On Saturday, September 14 from 9am-4pm, the first-ever Ellicottville LIVING Tour, sponsored by PDM Marketing & Media, Inc., invites prospective buyers/renters on a free tour of more than 10 Ellicottville homes for sale or rent. Tour-goers are invited to meet at the Tamarack Club at Holiday Valley, where they can board a free shuttle that will take them to each living space on the tour. For those who wish to start anywhere or take their own transportation, a free pamphlet and map can be downloaded at www.EllicottvilleLIVINGTour.com. For the past eight years, Paul Maurer, owner of PDM Marketing & Media, Inc., and his business partner Michele Pellette have organized 12 similar tours in the Buffalo area, and are excited to expand the concept to Ellicottville. “My wife had the idea about nine years ago,” he explained. “At that time, there were a lot of old buildings, homes and condos that were being restored in the Buffalo area. ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have this massive open house?’ she said.” Maurer, whose background is in marketing and sales, loved the idea and has been doing it ever since. “Like the Buffalo area, Ellicottville has a lot of unique living spaces,” he said. “It’s a great way to show off real estate where people feel less encumbered. They don’t have to make appointments or wait for an open house. They can make a decision based on the variety they saw during this tour; it’s just a really fun way to compare different homes.” ERA Team VP Real Estate agent Melanie Pritchard is showing homes, along with her mother and business partner, Cathleen Pritchard, and realtor Amy DeTine. “Paul and I had worked together in the early 90s for the same radio company,” Pritchard explained. “We’re really excited that he asked us to be part of this tour. This is their first venture outside of Buffalo, and those tours draw hundreds of people.” According to Pritchard, the housing market in Ellicottville is strong. “Ellicottville has always been a steady market,” said Pritchard, who has worked for ERA Team VP since 2008. “Many people are looking for that second home within driving distance. They can use it more often, rather than a home out of state, like in Arizona or Florida. There are many people looking to move to Ellicottville full-time, too.” Pritchard noted that the village’s unique history, character, recreation, and full schedule of year-round events are a draw for prospective homeowners. DeTine has worked with ERA Team VP for approximately 20 years, and is looking forward to hosting a few different properties on the tour. “There is a condo above our office at 12 Washington Street that is for sale,” she said. “It’s got great style - a very cool renovation with lots of reclaimed wood, concrete counters and high-end appliances.” DeTine is also working with Timberbuilt homes, a company from North Collins, that builds timber-framed custom homes in the area. “We’re going to be hosting one model of a timberbuilt home on 12 Greer Hill Drive; this model is called the Spring House,” she explained. She noted that the tour experience has so much to offer that a traditional open house does not. “People don’t have to worry about getting lost or parking,” she said. “You can just relax, enjoy yourself and see some beautiful properties!” Maurer explained that each of the properties is represented by someone closely associated with it, including the owners, realtors, architect or designer. “There will be a property on this tour that was an old church,” he said. “It’s been transformed into a really, really cool place and the owners are putting it up for sale. They’ve lovingly done all the work restoring the bell tower and the stained glass windows.” In addition to unique living spaces, the Ellicottville LIVING Tour will also feature a luxury car show in the driveway of each property on the tour. “We’ve partnered with Towne BMW who will be putting BMWs, Maseratis, and Alfa Romeos in the driveways of these places for people to see,” he explained. “When you see a luxury home, you’ll also see that luxury car parked in the driveway.” Need another reason to check out the Ellicottville LIVING Tour? “It’s taking place during Ellicottville’s Rock N’ Roll weekend,” said Maurer. “The tour just adds to the weekend’s fun activities, and there’s no cost to participate.” The Ellicottville LIVING Tour concludes at John Harvard’s Brew House at Holiday Valley. “We’re going to have a fun after-party at the end of the tour,” said Maurer. “It’s just a great way for people to share stories about the places they visited and have fun. This tour is an opportunity for people to get a good feel for where they want to live. There are also great ideas for decorating; a lot of people like to see the creativity that people put into their homes.” @erateamvp

CRUISE INTO FALL ON THESE SCENIC BYWAYS By Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau

In autumn, Mother Nature puts on the show of the year with endless canopies of crimson and gold in the Allegheny National Forest region, and there is no better way to view this spectacle than by car or motorcycle. The following scenic drives are not only beautiful, but also take you to places such as the amazing Kinzua Sky Walk at the Kinzua Gorge, through the colorful forestlands of the Allegheny National Forest region, to idyllic towns and beyond. SERENITY GLASS MUSEUM

SCENIC PENNSYLVANIA ROUTE 6 Begin your Journey on Pennsylvania Route 6 in the quaint town of Port Allegany with a stroll through the Serenity Glass Museum, or enjoy kayaking on the Allegheny River before heading west on Route 6 and continuing to the town of Smethport. Once you have reached the Victorian village, tour the streets to witness the amazing architecture of mansions built in the 1800s by lumber barons. A self-guided walking tour brochure is available at the kiosk in front of the McKean County Courthouse. KANE MANOR Rimrock Overlook is just one of the scenic overlooks along the Longhouse National Scenic Byway from which to view the vistas of woods and water.

Continuing west on Route 6, turn right to take a four-mile side trip on the Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway to the Kinzua Bridge State Park to “Walk the Tracks Across the Sky” on the Kinzua Sky Walk, located at 296 Viaduct Road in Mt. Jewett, PA. The Kinzua Sky Walk is considered “One of the Top Ten Most Scenic Skywalks in the World,” offering 360-degree panoramic views of the Kinzua Gorge. The park is open from 8am until dusk year-round and offers nature programs, picnic areas and hiking and biking trails. The Knox & Kane Rail Trail is a 3.8-mile linear trail suitable for families, and the Kinzua Creek Trail winds down the side of the gorge and is for experienced hikers only. Admission to the park and skywalk are free. Travel back to Route 6, drive west from the park and consider stopping for the evening at the Kane Manor in the village of Kane. Wake up refreshed and renewed after an ultracomfortable stay at this National Historic Landmark and utilize the morning to explore local artisans’ works at Artworks on the Summit, located at 54 N. Fraley Street, followed up with a delicious spot for foodies, Bell’s Meat & Poultry. In the afternoon, sample wine at Flickerwood Wine Cellars or Twisted Vine, or a brew or two at Logyard Brewing, and don’t miss sampling the world’s only Leek Vodka at CJ Spirits Craft Distillery.

LONGHOUSE NATIONAL SCENIC BYWAY Leave Kane on Route 321 north to set off to journey on the Longhouse National Scenic Byway, named “One of the Top Six Fall Foliage Drives in the United States.” Follow Route 321 along the Allegheny Reservoir and up into the highlands through a beautiful forest of hardwoods and hemlock. Turn left on Route 59 back toward the Allegheny Reservoir, and in a short distance you will pass the trailhead for Morrison Trail; the 5.3-mile trail has two loops passing through boulder fields and forgotten homesteads. Known as Trail Central, the Allegheny National Forest has hundreds of miles of trails. Before your trip, download trail maps and more information at VisitANF.com/hiking so you can plan your hikes along the way. Many of the local trails are also suitable for biking. HOOKER FULTON BUILDING

MOUNTAIN LAUREL INN

Back on the road, watch for signs along the byway for Rimrock Overlook, a scenic overlook offering stunning vistas of the Allegheny Reservoir from atop impressive rock formations. Longhouse Drive continues past the Kinzua Wolf Run Marina to Kinzua Point - another magnificent overlook - and then to Jakes Rocks. If you enjoy mountain biking, this is where you will find the Jakes Rocks Mountain Biking Trail. You may either loop around the reservoir on Forest Service Roads and return to Kane or backtrack across the bridge through Marshburg on Route 59, which becomes Route 770. Turn north on Route 219 to visit the Penn Brad Oil Museum, which tells the storied history of the area’s oil boom days. After visiting the museum, continue driving on Route 219 north to arrive in Bradford. Bradford’s downtown is a National Historic District; plan to leave time to explore some of the town’s heritage highlights: The Zippo/Case Museum, the Marilyn Horne Museum, and the eclectic architecture of Main Street built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In Bradford, you have plenty of choices of family-owned restaurants such as Beefeaters, A Slice of the 80’s, Togi’s Family Restaurant or the Bradford Brew Pub in which to sample

the local cuisine. The Best Western Plus Bradford Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Mountain Laurel Inn B&B, and the Bradford Flatiron Airbnb offer lodging for the night. If you desire something more rustic, drive out Route 346 west from Bradford to the Allegheny National Forest; there you can sit back and relax in front of a fire while roasting marshmallows next to a tent site or rustic cabin off the shores of the Allegheny Reservoir at the Willow Bay Recreation Area. In the morning, follow Route 346 along the northern shoreline of the Allegheny Reservoir. This area offers vistas of the water and forest, and many species of birds such as American Bald Eagles and Osprey can be sighted in this area. The roadway continues north, past the New York/ Pennsylvania state line, changing into NY Route 219 and then merging with I-86 where you can head west to Seneca Gaming & Entertainment, the Seneca Allegany Casino and the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum in Salamanca, NY, or the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, NY.

EASTERN CONTINENTAL DIVIDE LOOP Passing through some of the most rugged terrain in the Allegheny Highlands and the Pennsylvania elk range, the Eastern Continental Divide route is a loop which begins in Smethport, east along Route 6, past Lynn Hall to Port Allegany, then south to the Sizerville Wildlife Center, Benezette and the Elk Country Visitors Center, looping west then north through rugged forestlands to St. Marys before returning to Smethport. Be sure to leave plenty of time for stops along the way. As you leave Smethport, traveling east on Route 6, you will travel past an Allegheny Modernism architectural gem, Lynn Hall. Located at 21656 Route 6, 1 mile east of Port Allegany, Lynn Hall is currently undergoing a major renovation. Lynn Hall Restoration Tours may be scheduled in advance by calling 954-554-8492. Driving a little further east is Port Allegany. Here, Serenity Glass Park, built with the town’s signature glass blocks, is a delightful stop for photography. Turn south onto Route 155, where you will crest the Eastern Continental Divide, continue to Sizerville State Park for a quick stop at their Wildlife Center. Drive south on Route 155, changing into Route 120, then Route 555 southwest to Benezette where the Elk Country Visitors Center will greet you with interpretative displays and offer the opportunity to observe elk and white-tail deer from their outdoor wildlife observation area. Continue along Route 555, merge north on Route 255 to the town of St. Marys where the Straub Brewery is located. Stop into the Straub Brewery Visitors Center, located at 303 Sorg Street, to taste traditional German American lagers and ales. In its original location since 1872, Straub is the 3rd oldest family-owned brewery in the country. Follow Route 120 west through the lush canopy of the forest touched by the gold and crimson in fall, until you reach Route 46 north, drive north to Route 6 to head back to the charming essence of small-town Americana, Smethport, Pennsylvania. Overnight lodging in Smethport includes two lovely B&B’s, the Mansion District Inn and the Blackberry Inn. For more attractions and sites to visit along these four routes or for all seven routes, go to the color-coded driving map on page 20.

EXPERIENCE THE FUN OF FALL The Allegheny National Forest region is gearing up for the official beginning of autumn. Many local events will be happening on Saturday, September 28 including the Annual Fall Flickerwood Festival in Kane and Pumpkinfest in Bradford. Also, National Hunting and Fishing Day at the Kinzua Bridge State Park will feature an introduction to archery course and a display by local trappers. Flickerwood Fall Festival is a celebration of harvest and winemaking. The event will feature live music, local artisans, food, wine tastings, tours, Sangria and Bloody Mary bars, as well as new wines and more from 10am-8pm at 309 Flickerwood Road in Kane, PA. A JOURNEY TO THE BOTTOM OF THE KINZUA BRIDGE Join the Twin Tiers Camera Club for a unique experience under the inky summer night sky at the bottom of the Kinzua Gorge of the Kinzua Bridge State Park, 296 Viaduct Road in Mt. Jewett, PA.
