By Spencer Timkey For Chautauqua’s ERA Team VP Real Estate, the fight against ALS is painfully personal. Just over 10 years ago, they began the Agents of Hope golf tournament, a way to raise money and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Soon after the tournament’s creation, one of ERA’s staff members received news that her husband had been diagnosed with ALS. Last year, he passed away.

“It turned into a bigger thing for us,” said Hannah Raynor, ERA Chautauqua’s multimedia marketing coordinator. “Since then, more and more of both staff members and friends have been affected by it. It’s powerfully personal for us.” While ERA’s corporate office designated the Muscular Dystrophy Association as the charity of choice over a decade ago, they since have branched out in the charities they give to. But the Chautauqua office continues to make the ALS Foundation its primary charitable cause. ERA Team VP Chautauqua’s Broker/Owner Bill Soffel serves on the National Board of Trustees of The ALS Association. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Over time, nerve cells break down, reducing muscle strength and capacity. With 20,000 cases in the United States alone, life expectancy from diagnosis is anywhere from 2-5 years. There is no cure. On Thursday, August 22, ERA Team VP will host the Agents of Hope Golf Tournament at the Chautauqua Golf Club. In its 10th year, the tournament has raised a total of $100,000 to assist in researching a fight against ALS. “What’s neat about this year is that it’s the 5th anniversary of when the Ice Bucket Challenge began,” Raynor said, referencing the viral Internet campaign that saw people dump buckets of ice on themselves to raise awareness for ALS. “It was so out of nowhere, and they raised so much money from it that they feel a cure for ALS is coming soon.” The Ice Bucket challenge galvanized the Internet’s good people, raising over $84 million for the ALS Foundation. “With the disease affecting some of our friends, co-workers and family, it’s become a rallying cry for the community,” Raynor said. “Our primary sponsors include Southern Tier Brewing, Chautauqua Brick, Fessenden Laumer & DeAngelo Attorneys at Law, Hall & Lee Yaw LLP, John J. Grimaldi & Associates, Pepsi Bottling Company, and Frito Lay, amongst others,” she said. “We’re always welcome to new sponsorships as well.” The tournament, which includes golf, a cart, lunch, dinner and other great games/prizes, is $100 per person or $75 for club members. With corporate, individual and team sponsorships available, there’s always a way to help. Dinner will be served by La Familia restaurant. “This is something we feel very strongly about and take great pride in,” Raynor said. “Every little bit helps.” For more information and to register for this year’s Agents of Hope golf tournament, head to http://getmeregistered.com/AgentsofHopeGolf.

Now in its 34th year, Taste of Ellicottville is the best weekend to discover the area’s finest eateries, which will be serving up their signature dishes from noon-4pm on August 10 and 11.

The whole thing kind of happened on accident. The reasoning behind it, however, wasn’t one.

“Taste of Ellicottville is growing more and more each year,” said Barb Pump, project development manager of Ellicottville’s Chamber of Commerce. “We’ve been doing this since 1985, and everyone looks forward to this weekend. The competition is stiff!”

Sonny Muscato is the type of person that instantly draws you in. Energetic, happy-golucky and a stud on the drums, he’s got a magnetic personality. But he’s gone through some tough times, a byproduct of hanging around roughneck South Buffalo streets and a lack of societal support. Sonny Muscato is autistic.

Over 20 Ellicottville restaurants and businesses are participating in this two-day outdoor event, which invites the public to sample small dishes and beverages. Each restaurant is reviewed by a panel of judges that will present awards in the following categories: best appetizer, best entrée, best dessert, and best healthy choice. “There is also a ‘kids’ choice,’” Pump explained. “Local kids will have the chance to choose their favorite menu item for this category.” The chamber will be running two booths centrally located at the event to sell food item tickets throughout the weekend. Food item tickets are $1 each and restaurants will charge between $1 and $4 for their dishes. “You can buy tickets individually or in sheets,” Pump explained. “One ticket booth is cash only, and the other booth takes credit cards.” Pump explained, “We like to spice it up with something new! This year, everyone will have their own theme, which you’ll see in their tent décor, their servers and staff, and maybe inside their restaurant, too.” Also new this year, the judging and announcement of the winners will take place on Saturday instead of Sunday. Shane Kell, owner of Madigan’s, is looking forward to offering several signature dishes, including two that have won awards in the past. “One of the items we’re doing is steak, which we get fresh from Dom’s Butcher Block next door,” he said. “We’re doing a pan-seared strip steak served au poivre, which is like a pepper-based cream sauce, and we’re also offering it with a chimichurri sauce.” The au poivre option won best entrée three years ago, said Kell. “We’re also offering our Guinness mac ‘n cheese, which we’ve done for the last five years,” he said. “It’s a crowd-pleaser, and it won best entrée four years ago.” While some restaurants, like Madigan’s, have participated every year since the Taste began, others are newer to the event. Beth Sheehy, owner of the Winery of Ellicottville, is looking forward to participating for the third year. “Our menu will feature wine pairings,” she explained. “One of the items we’re serving is Watson’s Chocolate-covered pretzels paired with our Snow Fox, which is a Niagara wine - a sweet wine.” Those interested in sampling or purchasing wine will need to show ID, in addition to their food tickets, and Sheehy invites visitors to enjoy full tastings of over 20 different wines inside the winery throughout the weekend. The Silver Fox Steakhouse has participated in the Taste every year except the year owner Michael Nickolson got married. “This year, we’re going to be doing a pork belly and Asian tuna,” said Nickolson. “It’s always a fun weekend,” he added. “It’s nice to have people drop by and say how much they appreciate your restaurant and what you’re serving.” At age 21, Nickolson along with his dad, Gerry, opened the restaurant, and more than 40 years later, it’s still going strong. Pump looks forward to another great year of delicious food and fun. “All of our restaurants take a lot of pride in what they do, and this is a great weekend to experience it,” she said. Herein lies the reasoning. In terms of awareness and research of disabilities, autism has only recently been put in the spotlight. There aren’t the myriad of programs for adults like you might find with Down’s Syndrome; in fact, there aren’t many programs at all. Sick of hearing the same excuses from the same people, Sonny’s brother — musician Max Muscato — took it upon himself to make the change. Herein lies the happy accident. “For a long time, my brother wasn’t getting the help we wanted him to be getting,” Muscato said. “He’s an unbelievable musician, artist and loves filmmaking. But how many programs have you heard of that focus on these disciplines and cater exclusively to those with autism?” The Muscatos are a family of musicians. Max, Sonny and their father Marc all put a heavy emphasis on music — the people you meet, the connections, the healing power. Of all the things the classes and help groups used with Sonny growing up, it always came back to music. But once Sonny turned 18, he was out of the programs designed almost exclusively for children and minors. “My brother kind of fell in with the wrong crowd,” Muscato said. “It culminated in a drunk corrections officer shooting him over a misunderstanding. He was in and out of jail for a few years after that. It was tough. We knew we needed to do something.” After visiting Sonny in jail, Max and Marc decided to take action. An album release party for Max in 2017 was when the journey began, as he dedicated it to his brother. And it was in this moment, that Rock Autism was born. “After receiving approval from New York State, the ball really started rolling,” Muscato said. “We had always wanted to do a music festival. So we hosted concerts, comedy nights, benefits, you name it — everything we could to raise enough money to put on a music festival. The entire goal being to raise enough from the festival where we could begin our primary program.” Last year’s Rock Autism Music Festival raised close to $20,000, which allowed the organization to begin its Rock Autism Multimedia Vocational Program for Music and Film. The program teaches those with autism how to make music, create short films, and let’s them get their feet wet in the music industry. But most importantly, it gives them purpose. “Our main partner when it comes to the music and film is Sensu Music, which is our

“SONNYBOI” ROCK AUTISM MUSIC FESTIVAL: MAX MUSCATO FT. SONNY MUSCATO

A Conversation with MAX MUSCATO HULICK: You were in the recording studio today. Were you working on an album? MUSCATO: Actually, I was re-recording “Sonnyboi”, which is the Rock Autism anthem. It’s a song I wrote about my brother. The way it works is when you first get into the music industry, big record labels want to hear a demo, not necessarily the finished product. So you send them the demo and if they like what they hear they say … ok, let’s hear the real thing. So a couple people liked what they heard and so I am re-recording it and this will be the first song I’ll do on the professional level. HULICK: That’s exciting! Having the first one being about your brother must really be special to you. MUSCATO: Yes! The song is my perspective of what I grew up with him and seeing him struggle with some pretty heavy personal and emotional issues, but all the while loving music and film and just kind of being himself. HULICK: Your brother plays drums for you, doesn’t he? MUSCATO: Well he plays on “Sonnyboi”, and he’ll do a couple other songs, but my dad is really my main drummer.

......................... Saturday, August 31 | 4:00 P.M. By Melanie Hulick Save the date for Saturday, August 31 for the 2nd Annual Rock Autism Music Festival, which will be held in Ellicottville, NY from 4-11pm at the Village Park.

HULICK: You were the one who started the Rock Autism Music Festival for your brother who has autism, right? MUSCATO: My dad and I had the vision but it was a collaborative effort of the Rock Autism team. HULICK: Can you tell our readers a little bit about it? MUSCATO: Absolutely! This will be our second year, but it has been an idea between my dad and me for probably six or seven years and it finally came to the point after seeing my brother continue to struggle that I said … you know what … we got to do something for this cause.

“It’s a family thing,” said Muscato. “We are all together doing what we love.”

HULICK: And the music festival is held in Ellicottville, correct? MUSCATO: Yes. It is held in the Ellicottville Village Park. It will be on August 31 from 4-11pm. There will be five or six bands throughout the day/night, and we are going to have a ton of vendors, paintings for the children, a Rock Autism merchandise area and much more! We like to create a different atmosphere from what you typically see at events for organizations, because at the end of the day when you’re dealing with autism, which is considered a disability, they just want to have fun too … and so do the parents. So what better time than at a music festival where you can hang out, listen to music, have some good food and drink.

The festival had been an idea for six or seven years in the minds of Max and his dad, and then it finally came to fruition and is now an annual event done to raise awareness and money for autism.

HULICK: This must be quite a lot to put together … MUSCATO: (laughs) Last year we did 12 hours of music! It was the most intense day of my life! They found me one time sleeping in the beer cooler.

“There’s a need to have something fun that connects people to the ones they love that are affected by autism and show them support through music,” the singer/ songwriter stated.

HULICK: (laughs) Oh no! So that explains why it is six or seven hours this year. MUSCATO: (laughs) That’s right! The great thing is we raised over $15,000 for our first year, which other organizations have told me is terrific. So that feels good and makes it all worth it. It is quite an undertaking but I truly enjoyed it and I am looking forward to this year’s festival and future festivals.

I had the pleasure of catching up with the Founder and President of the festival, Max Muscato after he finished a day in the recording studio. Muscato started the festival in honor of his older brother, Sonny, who is autistic and plays drums in his band on a couple songs, with their dad, Marc, as the main drummer.

Muscato was born in Washington DC, but was raised here in Buffalo. Dad, a professional percussionist, was the support and teacher throughout his early years as his son showed interest in the drums, until he picked up a guitar at age 12. His brother, Sonny, was partial to the drums. Studying to be a physician at the University at Buffalo, it seemed that he always knew what his true calling was, since he thought about, wrote and played music more than school. Muscato and I talked about the festival, his time in the recording studio and his favorite venue to play locally, along with his “dream” gig. I found Muscato very personable and easy to talk to. We shared a couple laughs … one when he talked about his brother saying, “I’m just under 6’ tall and Sonny has 2” on me and about 30 pounds … so he can kick my butt!” If you haven’t seen the band play, you can check out their schedule at www.maxmuscato.com , and make plans to see them at the festival for a great cause and great music.

HULICK: Where can people find out more about the festival and purchase tickets? MUSCATO: Tickets are $25 for pre-sale general admission and VIP tickets are $75 for the day. They can be purchased at rockautism.org. HULICK: You play a lot of different venues in the western New York area. What’s your favorite place to play? MUSCATO: My favorite venue is Town Ballroom, which is downtown Buffalo next to Shea’s. The owners of Town Ballroom are on the committee for Rock Autism and they’ve been extremely helpful with everything and have been very supportive. Without their guidance I don’t think we would have been as successful as we were last year. Actually, everyone that has been involved in the festival has been wonderful.

...................................

HOLIDAY VALLEY RESORT

By Louisa Benatovich

What Is Tuscan Moon?

Buon Appetito!

A decade ago, members of the Rotary Club of Ellicottville sat down to brainstorm. With philanthropic and community enrichment programs their goal, they envisioned a fundraiser that would not only involve all aspects of our beloved village, but also keep these programs running for years to come. What began as “Another Day in Paradise” soon became Ellicottville’s favorite upscale end-of-the-summer party. Today, the Tuscan Moon celebration is the perfect opportunity for the community to come together. The combined generosity of locals and out-of-towners provides the funds necessary for Rotary outreach. These programs flourish and grow due to the outpouring of support from this event. As well as a relaxing night out, Tuscan Moon is a chance to give selflessly and receive, too!

The Rotary Club will transport you to the glowing hills of Tuscany without the jetlag! As the sun sets around the slopes surrounding the Holiday Valley Pool Complex and Cabana Bar, guests will delight in Italian treats masterfully prepared by local eateries. Upon arrival, you will be greeted with trays of delicious crabstuffed artichokes and other hors d’oeuvres artfully created by Katy’s Café. Served buffet-style, the entrées beautifully embrace the Italian theme. From Slopeside’s Pasta Table to the expertly cured meats from The Silver Fox Steakhouse, Tuscan Moon’s array of delicacies will never cease to astound the taste buds. With Dina’s heavily praised Osso Bucco making a much anticipated return, Tuscan Moon promises to be Ellicottville’s culinary event of the season.

Sweet Treats

All Hands On Deck

If savory isn’t your speed, Tuscan Moon’s irresistible Dessert Table will be sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Adorned in delicious cakes piled with rich frosting, homemade cookie classics, and flaky, fruity tarts created by acclaimed Chef Tom Kneeland, we dare you to escape this table’s tantalizing allure. Bite-sized snacks from Ellicottville newcomer Cupcaked will round out an already irresistible display. If you thought the pastries couldn’t tempt you, Western New York favorite Watson’s Chocolates just might be enough to warrant a cheat day. Enjoy their award-winning sponge candy paired with any of the wonderful wines available at the bar. Whether you choose one treat or all, these glorious creations will not fail to leave you satisfied.

In true Rotary style, Tuscan Moon is an event that gives back to the community with the help of an army of capable volunteers. Ellicottville athletes, ranging from soccer goalies to quarterbacks, choose to lend their capable hands to the worthiest of causes. On the night of the event, you might see familiar young faces offering you appetizers, divvying out delectable eggplant parmesan, and clearing plates. Additionally, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s Hospitality Program will use the opportunity to volunteer and gain work experience.

Live Music

Going, Going, GONE!

Tuscan Moon is proud to announce this year’s musical treat! Accompanied by pianist Jake MaloneBrancato, acclaimed vocalist Kristin Smigielski will grace the slopes with her refreshing jazz ovals. Described as Buffalo’s fastest up-and-coming jazz group, Kristin and Jake will entertain and amaze with a variety of classics from The Beatles to Louis Armstrong. Putting her own spin on already ageless musical fare, Kristen breathes new life into jazz, pop, classical, and contemporary music alike. Sit back and enjoy the delicious food as Kristen covers timeless masterpieces by Adele, Alicia Keys, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Tom Waits, Nora Jones, and many more.

The absolute highlight of Tuscan Moon is not just the scrumptious food or wonderful music, but also the opportunity for a great bargain. Through live and silent auctions, guests will have the chance to win all sorts of wonderfully unique items while supporting the Rotary. While the silent auction will feature marvelous baskets put together by local businesses and friends of the Rotary Club, the live auction is truly the main event of the night. Boasting a great selection of items including Bills and Sabres tickets, Cutco knife sets, and a delectable Bourbon basket, the excitement of the fastpaced live auction might give you thrill. As you enjoy your dinner, browse the tables to see what unexpected items grab your fancy.

What Are You Supporting?

Purchase Your Ticket

In attending Tuscan Moon, you are changing lives. Through the Rotary’s Foundation for Youth, you are supporting the Ellicottville Memorial Library’s Summer Internship, the Ellicottville Young Writers’ and Illustrators’ Club, the Park Program, library workshops, the ECS Reading Fluency Program, summer camp experiences at Allegany State Park, scholarships for ECS graduates, and the SLAPSHOT Leadership Program. The Rotary Club also supports the Fire Department’s Explorer Program, the Alley Katz, Ellicottville Food Bank, and Santa’s Workshop. At the holidays, the Rotary funds Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners for locals in need. Through Family Support for Ellicottville, the Rotary is also a “quiet helping hand” for unexpected medical expenses and transportation to treatment locations. Here’s to our hometown heroes!

“Remember that this is Ellicottville, so the dress is always casual,” says Greg Cappelli, member of the Rotary Club of Ellicottville. If you’re in the mood to spice things up, however, feel free to come in theme. Tickets for Tuscan Moon are a donation of $65 per person. They will be available online at www.ellicottvillerotary.com, in local outlets (E-Ville Spirits and Katy’s Café), or you can order by phone (credit cards accepted) at 716-699-8758. As well as helping countless families in our beloved Ellicottville, your ticket donation is eligible for a tax write-off. Bellissimo! With all the fun to be had, waste no time in inking August 24 to your calendar. Tuscan Moon 2019 is an event you won’t want to miss.

Nature’s Remedy natural foods market & holistic wellness center

A SUMMER WELLNESS

RETREAT FOR YOU! By Kristina Barlow, N.D., C.S.T.

The Natural Health World is growing rapidly with new herbal combinations, nutriceuticals, healing therapies, wellness centers and health ideas. Since I last wrote for Brenda and this fantastic publication, The Keto Diet and MCT Oil, Intermittent Fasting, Collagen Peptides, Cleanses, CBD Oil products, Fancy Athletic Shoes, Oat Milk, Exercise Apps and Programs like Peloton, IV Elixirs, Focus on HormoneBalancing and New Plant-Based Foods and Products have exploded on the market. SIMPLIFICATION of our daily routines is a must for everyone. The scales tip out of our favor when we create more pressure around food, exercise and lifestyle, yielding more stress on the body. We all have felt this at times. So, how do we feel great and enjoy the process at the same time? That answer is different for everyone. There are many paths to feeling great, to experiencing wellness. It all depends on YOU! Below is a great place to start, with the idea being a simple yet effective Daily Plan of healing foods, supplements and exercise. Commit to two 2-hour sessions per week of an Ionic Detox Foot Bath, PEMF Therapy for pain, tissue healing, relaxation and inflammation, Authentic Touch Essential Oils to the spine while lying on a heated Far Infrared Biomat and a mini-consultation. $75/session (discounted 50% for August and September 2019 only). In addition, we are offering 1, 2 or 3-day Wellness Retreats as a time to slow down and implement an individualized, healthy lifestyle based on your own needs, goals and capabilities, sharing this experience within a small group (locations and fees negotiable.)

DAILY PLAN CELERY JUICE first thing in the morning upon waking, 15 minutes before eating or drinking. I am loving all that I am learning from Anthony William. He is “The Celery Juice” or “The Esptein Barr Virus” guy. He wrote a whole book on it! Entitled Celery Juice, his confidence in this healing modality is seen in his subtitle, The Most Powerful Medicine of Our Time, Healing Millions Worldwide. I am seeing great results in digestion, elimination, energy and improvement of illnesses with implementing his idea of 16 oz. or more of celery juice/day. As you juice in the morning, listen to his informative podcasts on the Podcasts or Sound Cloud app. EXERCISE, but starting out, make sure to do whatever relaxes you and brings you the most joy for your first hour of the day. SMOOTHIES after your workout is a great way to start out your day with healing foods that are basically pre-digested. I hear many naysayers about smoothies … but I see this as a great way to ingest a large amount of nutrients, quickly available for absorption. You can even incorporate various supplements into your smoothie. We have excellent feedback about our smoothies that we sell at Nature’s Remedy with vegan, non-GMO pea protein powders and organic non-dairy milks with frozen fruits and vegetables. For example: My daily breakfast is a smoothie with water or almond, oat, flax or coconut milk, frozen fruit, a handful of fresh spinach, 1 scoop of Love and Peas protein powder and one scoop of Collagen Peptides. Anthony William has my favorite smoothie recipe that compliments the morning celery juice. This is called the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie. Everyone has heavy metals to some degree in their bodies. This is a great smoothie for anyone with a history of Epstein Barr Virus, Herpes, CMV, Chicken Pox, Shingles or Strep: 2 bananas, 2 cups wild blueberries, 1 cup cilantro, 1 teaspoon barley grass juice powder, 4 capsules opened of Hawaiian Spirulina, 1 teaspoon Atlantic Dulse, 1 orange and 1 cup water. Blend. (We have the supplements available here at Nature’s Remedy.) LUNCH is best as a salad or soup. But add to your lunch a Ginger Limeade drink (from Life-Changing Foods by Anthony William) for energy and elimination of caffeine energy drinks. ¼ cup honey, 4 cups water, 1 tablespoon ginger juice, 1 cup lime juice and ¼ cup fresh mint leaves. Great for digestion and energy. Also add to your lunch any superfoods such as Maca, Spirulina, Goji Berries and more. (Superfoods by David Wolfe) THROUGHOUT the DAY a lot of water with fruits, herbs or Chlorophyll liquid. DINNER is clean and lean with a lot of vegetables. Add CleanStart fiber and herbs in capsule form for a great small and large intestine cleanse. BEFORE BED ½ to 1 whole mango with Chamomile tea and 2 capsules of Passionflower for a great night’s sleep. “When you eat mango before bed, phytochemicals from the fruit, along with amino acids such as glycine, glutamine and cysteine combined with fructose and glucose, travel to the brain and quickly restore depleted neurotransmitters. This allows most insomniacs a chance to finally get some true rest during the night.” - Anthony William August is a GREAT month to let go and relax for a day or two or three and create then implement a plan that works for you, for your GREATEST asset … your beautiful body! Your Beautiful You! Make this a priority and relax and have FUN! You will feel excellent and you will be the best you can be for everyone around you!

FANTASTIC FUN, FAIRS & FESTIVALS AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURES IN THE FOREST By Daniella Griesbaum, ANF Visitors Bureau

Enjoy the last hoorah of summer in the Allegheny National Forest region in Northwestern Pennsylvania, relishing the many recreational opportunities offered by land or water, in between the multitude of fairs, festivals and fun the rest of the region has to offer. From golfing at the scenic and beautiful courses in the Allegheny National Forest region to hiking and camping on any of the 517,000 acres of the Forest to the can’t miss ethnic festivals - the Swedish Festival and the Festa Italiana - to great eats and entertainment at the old fashioned blue ribbon McKean County Fair. While exploring the region be sure to dine at one of our many family-owned restaurants. FESTA ITALIANA

Togi’s Restaurant offers authentic Italian cuisine and can seat up to 125 people.

TOGI’S AUTHENTIC ITALIAN RESTAURANT Family owned and operated since 1972, passing through four generations of family, Togi’s Family Restaurant located at 412 East Main Street in Bradford, Pennsylvania is a staple of the community for their wide variety of authentic Italian homemade cuisine, cozy dining atmosphere and friendly staff. Recipes for almost all Togi’s Family Restaurant authentic Italian dishes come from the grandmother, affectionately referred to as “Ma,” of current owner Michelle Bizzarro, who continues preparing these dishes with the same affection and attention to detail as “Ma” taught her – specialties include homemade sauces, meatballs, soups, salads and more. To begin your culinary adventure, choose from a wide variety of appetizers. Try Togi’s famed deep fried mushrooms dipped in an exquisite batter or their crispy, vegetarian fried zucchini strips covered in breadcrumbs and cooked until golden brown. For lunch grab a true Italian sandwich – the panini or try “Ma’s” classic spaghetti served in a delicious bread bowl. To fully gratify your taste buds, sample one of these authentic Italian dishes: “Ma’s” Spaghetti dinner with delicious gravy – better known state-side as red sauce; Eggplant Parmigiana - a casserole dish made with thinly sliced eggplant cooked until crisp and golden brown; or Stuffed Manicotti - a delicious pasta with ricotta cheese served with gravy. And you won’t want to miss the chance to sample “Ma’s Three Cheese Lasagna,” layered with “Ma’s” special sauce. Customers who have experienced this culinary adventure not only feel like family by the end, they also cannot wait to return for a second adventure.

CROOK FARM COUNTRY FAIR

“From the moment my wife and I walked in we were treated like old friends. The food was great, the service was excellent, and the owners were so kind. Small town Americana at its very best. I can’t wait to visit the area again, so I have a reason to eat at Togi’s,” customer Mark Brady said. Originally the Atlantic Gas Station, business name-sakes Tony Dodaro and Gino Chirilo purchased the property in 1968 and turned it into Togi’s Drive-In. Steve Stidd, an employee and cook of the original owners, eventually purchased the business in 1972. Over the following years, Stidd purchased the adjacent buildings as they went up for sale and kept expanding Togi’s to what you see today; the family now owns the entire block of 402-422 East Main Street. Shortly after Stidd purchased the building, his mother “Ma” and all his siblings came to work for him. As his siblings had children they also came to work for the restaurant. The family tradition is still an integral part of Togi’s practice with Stidd’s oldest daughter Michelle now running the restaurant while his younger daughters, Stephanie and Angela managing the Sub Station with their father’s guidance. Togi’s family-friendly atmosphere and homemade Italian cuisine are not the only attractions Togi’s Family Restaurant has to offer; the bar is an actual 28-foot-long salvaged boat with other eclectic Italian designs throughout the space. Togi’s also makes sure to give back to the community in which they reside; this year they hosted the 22nd Annual Kids and Cancer Motorcycle Benefit Run, which raises money for community children suffering from health issues and their families. Togi’s Family Restaurant offers in-house and off-site catering and has a rental banquet room called the Blue Room, which seats up to 125 people and is handicap accessible. The Blue Room is perfect for family reunions, special occasion dinners, and business meetings.

FAIRS, FESTIVALS AND FUN This time of season, the Allegheny National Forest region is alive with the sounds of music, laughter and families having fun. Plan your visit to the region now in order to enjoy one or more of the multitude of festivities featuring great ethnic food, crafts and fun adventures. BRADFORD FESTIVALS August in Bradford, Pennsylvania is a bustling time for citizens and visitors alike. The Festa Italiana, or Italian Festival as locals have dubbed it, will be held August 8-10. The Bradford Wine Walk will be held August 10. The Crook Farm Country Fair & Old Time Musical Festival closes out the month August 24-25. Founded in 1978 and held in downtown Bradford, Pennsylvania is the Festa Italiana. Bradford’s Italian heritage is celebrated at this annual community event, featuring authentic, homemade, Italian cuisine from an assembly of vendors, nightly live musical entertainment along with children’s games and rides. The festival finale will be a meatball eating contest and fireworks on Saturday. For more information about the festival and a complete schedule, search their Facebook page: Official-Festa-Italiana. On the last night of the Festa Italiana, on August 10 from 4-8pm, the Bradford Wine Walk invites participants to receive a complimentary wine glass along with the chance to explore Historic Downtown Bradford while sampling unique wines from eight local wineries. JEWETT SWEDISH FESTIVAL This year’s festival theme, the Tomtes – better known as Swedish gnomes – are coming to the 49th Annual Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival where citizens and visitors can enjoy ethnic food, music and entertainment with a Swedish flavor. The festival will be held August 9-11 on Main Street in downtown Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania, along scenic Route 6. Highlights of this year’s festivities include rides for children and adults, a maypole dance, Scandinavian folk band and Swedish dancers, a Norwegian storyteller, parade and fireworks. The Swedish Festival is a celebration of the early settlers who relocated from Amsterdam and Holland and the Dutch atmosphere that immigrated with them. The Mt. Jewett borough today hosts the Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival to revel in their Swedish heritage with the staple of each festivity being a traditional Swedish Smorgasbord. Abstract land titles show

that from the years 1816 to 1829 seven citizens of McKean County and owners of the Holland Land Company bought nearly 2,000,000 acres of land, where the city of Kane and Mt. Jewett are now located. According to festival chairwoman Beth Carpenter, this year’s festival has more vendors than any previous year, new carnival rides for children and teens, a new, fresh t-shirt design and special performance by local recording artists. For more information and schedule of events please call 814-558-0184 or search Mount-Jewett-Swedish-Festival on Facebook. MCKEAN COUNTY FAIR The classic McKean County Fair began in 1903 as a place for local farmers and vendors to exhibit and sell their livestock, homegrown fruits and vegetables and homemade treats. The McKean County Fair is the place where every member of the family can enjoy a hands-on experience of what makes McKean County unique and memorable. The 114th McKean County Fair will be held August 12-17 with Agricultural Day on August 10. Sunshine Shows have added additional hours of operation and are bringing brand new rides this year! A range of educational exhibits will also be showcased. General admission to the fair is $8 and can be purchased at the gate or in advance. Throughout the weeklong fair, visitors can explore a vast multitude of differing agricultural barns, enjoy livestock exhibits, blue-ribbon baked goods, multiple food vendors and live musical entertainment. The Allegheny National Forest, which is located within regions of McKean County, is of importance to the fair, as its natural resources and wildlife are part of what makes this area exceptional. Don’t forget to stay into the evening for more fun and activities, including tractor pulls, demolition derby and drag racing. For more information about the McKean County Fair and for a schedule of events call the fair office at 814-887-5361 or visit mckeancountyfair.net. ANF RANKED NATIONALLY

Allegheny National Forest recognized as the #2 Camping Destination in the United States By Daniella Griesbaum, ANF Visitors Bureau

Nothing like the experience of picking a spot in the middle of the Allegheny National Forest, setting up camp and then exploring the surroundings; from the fauna to the vast species of wildlife, there are always adventures to be had in the forest.

The scenic splendor and grandeur of the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) in northwestern Pennsylvania has not gone unnoticed. Just last month the Forest was ranked second, according to a national survey hosted by HipCamp.com, as the #2 Camping Destination in the entirety of the United State of America. HipCamp.com is a national camping site with ecologically minded campers. It is important to the future of our planet, including our own Allegheny National Forest and state parks. Undeveloped lands allow plants and wildlife to thrive and migrate naturally. The ANF offers over 15 campgrounds with more than 1,000 individual sites for tent and RV camping, plus rustic and full-service cabins with electricity and showers. Covering over 513,000 acres, the ANF includes land in McKean, Forest, Elk and Warren Counties. The ANF offers four reservoir campgrounds surrounding the Allegheny Reservoir, six non-reservoir campgrounds, as well as dispersed camping in undeveloped areas. There is no shortage of recreational opportunities in the Allegheny National Forest region during any season - from hiking, biking, fishing, boating, golfing, riding ATVs in the spring, summer and fall, to ice fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating or sledding in the winter.

ROCK AUTISM MUSIC FESTIVAL cont. from page 04

record label,” Muscato said. “It allows us to sign them and release the music. Simultaneously, we teach them how to make short films — be the videographer, editor, DP, etc. — and the ultimate goal is to get them employed down the road after they’ve honed their craft.” Rock Autism’s involvement in Ellicottville can be attributed to local celebrity and allaround great person Spencer Murray. “When Max approached me about getting involved, I jumped right in,” Murray said. “It’s about helping people. I’m of the attitude that everyone deserves to be happy, and if we can help these people find a niche and perfect a craft so they can go live a happy life in the real world, then it’s working. It’s crazy how fast it’s grown — Max will tell you the same thing — and the community has been unbelievable in its involvement.” The Ellicottville community, as it is so prone to do, welcomed Rock Autism with open arms. Utilizing the space of the Village Park to host the Festival, year two returns this Labor Day. Ellicottville Brewing Company recently released it’s aptly-named “Sonnyboy” IPA, and the Ellicottville Winery has a Rock Autism wine. A portion of both of the proceeds go directly to the organization. On Saturday, August 24, Rock Autism will partner with Ellicottville’s Finnerty’s Taproom to present the 1st Annual Rock Autism Finnerty’s Golf Classic at Elkdale Country Club.

Red Bridge, located just nine miles northwest of Kane, Pennsylvania along Route 321, is known for their excellent fishing. Situated on the eastern shore of the Kinzua Bay, this site offers tent, RV sites and full-service cabin rentals. Campsites along the Allegheny Reservoir include Willow Bay, the most developed recreational site within the Forest. Visitors can enjoy forest camping sites for RV’s, cabins and tents, with many sites having direct access to the water. Nearby, a motorized boat launch with a large parking area for cars and trailers offers convenient access to the Allegheny Reservoir. Canoes, kayaks and paddle boats are available to rent by calling Allegheny Site Management at 814-368-4158. For additional information go to alleghenysite.com. Each developed campsite in the ANF comes equipped with a picnic table, fire pit or grill (because what is a camping trip without S’mores?) as well as accommodation parking in designated lots. These areas within the ANF offer excellent wildlife viewing, along with birding and photography opportunities. Plan Your Trip: For more information about what to see and experience while in the region, contact the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau by calling 800-473-9370, email info@visitanf.com or click on VisitANF.com.

“It’s a 9-hole shamrock shootout at Elkdale,” said Finnerty’s owner and Rock Autism committee member Billy Finnerty. “We’ll have a pre-party at FTR at noon with lunch and a bloody mary bar. The shootout begins at 3:00 using the Stabelford System, followed with a big party at the restaurant afterwards. $100 per person and all proceeds will go to Rock Autism. It’s going to be a super fun day for a great cause.” “What’s so cool about this entire thing are the connections we’ve made,” Muscato said. “We’ve got messages from people in London, Spain, Australia and everywhere else you can imagine, encouraging us and telling us to keep going. We’re finding we’re an inspiration for other like-minded groups. Our reach has expanded, too. We’ve done stuff in New York City, Los Angeles, and have an event coming up in Nashville this fall. It’s really unreal how fast the whole thing has grown.” This year’s Rock Autism Music Festival in Ellicottville is set for Saturday, August 31 and will showcase The Allman Betts Band, sons of the legendary Allman Brothers Band. Other artists will be involved, and it’s a day real life music festival happening in Ellicottville. (Writer’s note: I’ve spent my entire life here, always envious of the festivals that happen in other places. Props to these guys for making it happen.) Gates open at 4pm. “I credit my brother for all of this,” Muscato said. “He’s gone through some tough times. But without his resiliency and out-of-this-world positive attitude, none of this would have happened. He’s the driving force behind it all.” For more information on the Rock Autism Music Festival including the band line-up, ticket pricing and more, head to RockAutism.org or @rockautism on Instagram.
