Southern Tier Brewing and Ellicottville Brewing Company bring their mobile draft vans to serve up both classic and seasonal choices. Once you’ve had your fill of food and beer, you’ll be treated to live music and a giant bonfire. Tickets for Trucks N’ Brews are $25, and you must be 21 or older to attend. On Saturday from 3:30-7:30pm, the Beer & Wine Festival returns for its 16th year. Holiday Valley transforms the Main Lodge into a 3-story dreamland for anyone who loves libations. A litany of local breweries, wineries and distilleries set up shop to serve you their signature tastings, having fun with you the entire time. Each floor of the lodge boasts a different vibe. The ground floor, where the wineries and distilleries play, offers a laidback atmosphere with a plethora of flavor. Ellicottville Distillery, the Winery of Ellicottville and Steelbound Distillery (just to name a few) provide the kick, while a live band provides the entertainment. Head upstairs to the main floor and immerse yourself in the breweries. Another live band will perform, and the cafeteria will be open to provide you a base. (Don’t forget to eat!) German sausage, hot dogs, burgers and fries are the perfect complement after you’ve had a couple drinks. Ellicottville’s Dom’s Butcher Block will sell smoked meats, plus Cuba Cheese Company and Phygit Food’s famous pretzel necklaces. On the top floor, the party climaxes with more breweries and an electric band performing all of the hits you love to sing. Cool down on the deck and treat yourself to a hand-rolled cigar with Gary Liota from Santiago Cigars. On Sunday, get back on track with the Kegs N’ Eggs Breakfast at John Harvard’s Brew House, located inside the Tamarack Club, next to Holiday Valley’s Main Lodge. Holiday Valley offers package pricing if you want to attend the entirety of the weekend’s festivities, or individual tickets for each event. You must be 21 or older to both purchase a ticket and attend. If you’re a designated driver, Holiday Valley offers DD ticket pricing. Make a weekend of it and stay at the Inn at Holiday Valley (special lodging packages available.) For more information on the weekend’s festivities and to purchase tickets, head to www.holidayvalley.com/brewfest.

NEW LOCATION! LOTS OF PARKING!

Here’s how it works: Regional food truck favorites line up around the parking circle outside of the lodge, giving party-goers their choice of delicious offerings. It’s tough to decide what (or how much) to eat, especially when you’re given the choice of: Pizza Amore, MooCheesy, Jake & the Fat Man BBQ, Lloyd, Fat Bob’s, Dina’s of Ellicottville, Siri Thai Cuisine and Allen Burger Venture.

ADIRONDACK THEME

The fun starts on Friday night (November 8) with Trucks N’ Brews from 7-10pm. A fresh, dynamic addition to the weekend’s fun, last year’s inaugural saw hundreds of people show up to Tannenbaum Lodge despite less than ideal weather.

TOBOGGANS

Want to kick off the 2019-20 ski season in the best way possible? How about a weekendlong festival in November that includes food trucks, 100s of different beers, wines & liquor, multiple live bands and like-minded party individuals? On November 8 & 9, Holiday Valley’s Beer & Wine Festival returns.

In its 62nd year of operations, Holiday Valley continues to improve and offer an unmatched resort experience

@holidayvalley

By Spencer Timkey The ski resort landscape has changed. Some would argue for the better. Some would not. We now live in a world of Epic and Ikon and corporations creating conglomerate ski resort families. Each side of this coin has its perks and downfalls, and regardless of where you stand on the subject, things have changed. While the industry attempts to make sense of where it will find itself in the coming years, one thing has remained constant. Since 1958, Holiday Valley has proudly operated as an independent resort - a combination of visionary leadership, loyal customers and a dynamic geographic location all have played a hand in why the resort continues to be successful. A staggering number that sticks out: $135 million. It signifies the amount of money Holiday Valley has reinvested in itself over the past 25 years, a testament to the resort’s desire to make itself better year-in and year-out. And it’s been money well spent, as seen in the world-class snowmaking system, the beautiful lodges, the fleet of groomers and every other detail you notice when you come to ski or ride. The most impressive aspect of the resort is its ability to offer a big mountain experience without the big mountain. What it lacks in elevation, it makes up for in amenities, operations and dedication. You won’t find any gondolas here, but you are able to ski at night on one of the 36 lit trails. You won’t find any peaks that tower above the clouds, but you will find an incredibly diverse skiing and riding experience that caters to all ages and ability levels.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS For the 2019-20 season, Holiday Valley will reinvest $3.3 million for capital improvements, distributed across operations and new amenities.

limited time on the hill, while Ultimate Passes allow you to pick a day or night. The College Pass, created to tap into the youth market, gets college kids unlimited nights and weekdays for $309 and unlimited nights for $209. New for this season, Holiday Valley will also offer dynamic lift ticket and rental pricing through its website. Pricing will variate depending on how long you book ahead - for instance, booking 7 days ahead of time will save you more money than buying at the ticket window. The same will go for rental rates. Other promotions throughout the season include the Intense Milk Bottle promo (bring an empty bottle of Intense Milk, score buy one, get one on nights tickets), Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month (rental, ticket and lessons promotions all January long), Midweek lodging where kids 17-and-under stay & ski for free and much more. For more information on Holiday Valley, its capital improvements and pass pricing, head to www.holidayvalley.com or follow them on Facebook (Holiday Valley Resort) and Instagram/Twitter (@holidayvalley).

MOUNTAIN COASTER AND TUBING PARK Two must-experience activities are the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster and the Tubing Park. The coaster, located at Tannenbaum, takes you up the hill in a two-person sled and then loops and twirls back down through the trees. Bonus? You control the speed with two hand brakes. “The coaster is a huge hit,” said Jane Eshbaugh, Marketing Director at Holiday Valley. “Parents can ride with their kids (as long as the combined weight is under the limit) and it’s a great time, especially at night. If you’ve done the coaster and want to experience some more high-speed thrills, the Tubing Park is for you.”

Living in the western New York snowbelt has its perks. The early season Lake Effect snow is arguably some of the best you’ll find in the entire world, and when those belts park over an area, accumulation is fast and furious. But while Lake Erie can giveth, Lake Erie can taketh away. Lake Effect snow isn’t always certain, which is why Holiday Valley has continued to grow its already impressive snowmaking system.

The Tubing Park, located just a short drive down Route 242 east of the village, has 22 lanes with quality snowmaking to match. When it’s super cold, put those goggles on - because you’re going to go fast, Ricky Bobby.

With the largest and most powerful automated snowmaking system on the east coast, the resort’s HKD snowmaking guns can be flipped on and off in the blink of an eye from the control room. A vast television screen shows each individual gun, complete with hyper accurate temperature, humidity and wind readings. Adding 107 of the low energy HKD Impulse guns across the resort will only enhance the snowmaking capability - which is already impressive, as there are now almost 800 snowmaking guns in total.

Half the fun of hitting a ski resort is the apres! After a strong day on the slopes, a cold beverage is the perfect way to end it. John Harvard’s Brew House, home to over 20 beers on tap, has views of the slopes and a (very cool) concrete bar. Bartenders will ask you how your day on the slopes went, all the while keeping you satisfied with drinks and food.

The resort will also add a PistenBully 600 winch cat to its fleet of groomers. One of the premier names in grooming, PistenBully’s machines utilize state-of-the-art technology and powerful German engines to create an unmatched snow surface. The winch cat differs from a traditional PistenBully by its attached winch, which allows it to anchor and groom a much steeper grade. If you follow Holiday Valley’s social channels, you most certainly have met Old Man Winter - the staff waving, bearded bringer of storms. Local legend Mike Paterniti, Old Man Winter’s alter ego, banded a group of guys together at the beginning of the summer to begin clearing and cleaning out the glades. The HV Woodsmen put significant man hours in, and visitors can expect a much better glades experience for the upcoming winter.

PASSES AND PROMOTIONS Holiday Valley offers a significant number of pass options, each one providing its own level of value and flexibility. The Classic Season Pass provides skiers and snowboarders with un-

APRES AT JOHN HARVARD’S BREW HOUSE

The square-shaped bar allows you to communicate with other visitors and swap stories. Or, if you’ve got the family, there’s tons of additional seating. Your favorite beers are all on tap, including seasonals from Ellicottville Brewing Company and Southern Tier Brewing. John Harvard’s is located inside the Tamarack Club, next to Holiday Valley’s Main Lodge.

ELLICOTTVILLE OASIS SPA Also located inside the Tamarack Club, just down the hall from John Harvard’s, is the Ellicottville Oasis Spa. Offering massages, facials and body wraps, the natural sunlight that pours into Oasis will leave you completely rejuvenated. Individual and group packages are available - call or book an appointment online, or pop in to see if they have times available. Book a package and enjoy access to the Tamarack’s added amenities including pool, hot tub, fitness room and free valet parking! View all of the Oasis’ services at www.ellicottvilleoasis.com. There’s a special vibe around Holiday Valley and Ellicottville that’s validated by the evergrowing number of people who come to visit. We’ll see you this winter. Let’s make it one to remember!

ROLLING OUT THE GREEN CARPET

A lot of great, affordable golf courses call Ellicottville and the surrounding areas home, which makes it the perfect spot for a golf getaway. Holiday Valley’s scenic Double Black Diamond Golf Course challenges golfers of all calibers with its tricky back 9, requiring shots over ravines and down hills and tough, undulating greens. But good golfer or bad, nothing beats finishing a round with a couple cocktails at the Cabana Bar, which lies adjacent to the pool complex. Nearby Elkdale (Salamanca), Cardinal Hills (Randolph) and Concord Crest (Springville) are all excellent, affordable tracks. The Southern Tier of western New York boasts great golf courses, which makes it perfect for anyone looking to escape the bustle of northern courses.

TREETOP ADVENTURES Half Ewok Village, half Indiana Jones, Holiday Valley’s Sky High Adventure Park is the 3rd largest aerial adventure park in the entire country. With 13 courses of varying difficulty, the 3D Climbing Forest, Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster and Mister Happy Gem Mining, there are activities for every member of the family, regardless of age or comfort level. After you purchase your ticket (you can do this at the Harness Shop or in advance online), you’ll fill out a waiver before getting harnessed up. You’re embraced by the trees as you walk into the park to the starting platform, where all courses begin. Yellow (easiest), green (easy-moderate), blue (moderate), black diamond (hard) and double black diamond (hardest) give you options. Courses incorporate a combination of obstacles and ziplines, with some platforms going up as high as 80 feet. The entire Sky High campus is an absolute blast, and we highly recommend it.

MOUNTAIN BIKING MECCA OF WESTERN NEW YORK Between the trails at Holiday Valley, HoliMont and state land, mountain biking is a prominent activity here in Ellicottville and surrounding hills. Trail networks range from easy to moderate to difficult, kept up by a band of local volunteers and WNYMBA (Western New York Mountain Biking Association.) If you’re new to the area when it comes to mountain biking, there’s no better person to speak with than Dennis Baldwin, owner of Bike & Bean (Bikes, Burritos and Brews). He hosts a Monday night shop ride, where everyone is invited and leaves at 6:00 o’clock sharp. Holiday Valley also just purchased a fleet of e-, or electronic assist, bikes for those of you that don’t want to completely work yourself. E-Bikes are rented through Sky High Adventure Park.

HOLIDAY VALLEY MUDSLIDE One of the most fun activities of the summer, Holiday Valley’s Mudslide takes you through the heart of the resort on a 3.5 or 5.4-mile loop. Runners, divided by age, compete to complete the course the fastest. There are 10-15 obstacles runners must go through (think Spartan Race without the barbed wire), and HV preaches that this race is about having fun. A post-race party (after you finish at the giant Mudslide) is one giant afterparty with 1,000 of your closest friends. Last year, Holiday Valley’s snowmakers built a pile big enough to survive until the race - which takes place in late June. Just some of the things you can expect to encounter at the Mudslide.

THERE’S A FESTIVAL EVERY MONTH! The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce does a great job of putting on a litany of great events all summer. Summer Music Festival, which takes place over the 4th of July weekend, has an art show and other activities downtown before culminating in nighttime performances by the Buffalo Philharmonic and a headliner on the slopes of Holiday Valley - and fireworks. A Taste of Ellicottville bands the restaurants together, serving up the best they have to offer to visitors cruising the streets. Girls Getaway, Jazz & Blues, Rock N’ Roll Weekend, Lacrosse and more ... there’s a festival - sometimes two - every month of Ellicottville’s “off-season” ... which has become as much of an “on-season” as winter. Ellicottville in the summertime is worth the trip. For more information on things to do at Holiday Valley, visit holidayvalley.com. And for a full list of the Chamber’s events, visit www.ellicottvilleny.com.

NEW YORK’S AMISH TRAIL

HISTORICAL SITES

Brochure and Map at amishtrail.com

Cutlery History | Seneca Culture

Nestled within the Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County, behind the hustle and bustle of today’s world, sits the New York Amish Trail. A place where you can take a step back in time, slow down and enjoy a simpler way of life. New York’s Amish Trail can be found along the Western border of Cattaraugus County in the towns and villages of Randolph, Conewango, Leon, South Dayton, Dayton and Gowanda. It is the largest Old-Order Amish Community in the United States!

Explore the unique history, culture and heritage that can be found in Cattaraugus County Museums and historical sites, as well as in the Seneca Nation’s Onöhsagwë:dé Cultural Center (also known as the Seneca Iroquois National Museum).

In late Autumn, take a scenic drive through the rural countryside along the Amish Trail. The leaves on the trees may be gone, but the view is still outstanding and roadside stands offer a reminder of warmer days with fresh homemade jams and jellies, canned goods, maple syrup and delicious baked goods. They also offer a unique gift to give for the upcoming holidays. Find colorful handcrafted rugs and quilts, woven baskets, handmade furniture, fun wooden toys and beautiful decorations.

There is an expansive amount of cutlery history that can be found in the Village of Cattaraugus, the Town of Little Valley and the City of Olean. One such place is the Cutco KaBar Visitors Center in Olean. Known all over the world, this Center has knowledgeable staff that will help you learn the timeline of how the company started and grew, as well as how the products are made and sold. There are antique displays, historical photographs and documents. Plus bring in your Cutco products for factory sharpening through their lifetime guarantee! More info at 716-790-7000 or www.cutco.com.

Plan your route ahead of time or simply go where the hand-painted signs take you. The Amish Trail brochure and map comes with a listing of the Amish shops by category or as a number on the map. You can also tour Amish Country with one of Leon Historical Society’s tour guides. They offer a step-on Guide service in which they design a tour according to your interests or an overall glimpse of the culture and history of the Amish. Call 1-800-331-0543 to request a map and brochure, for suggestions on where to go, or for more information on the Guide service. Side note: All Amish businesses are closed on Sundays.

The Onöhsagwë:dé Cultural Center in Salamanca welcomes visitors to explore the “American History You Won’t Find In Textbooks”. Seneca History is rich, but little known and understood. Though faced with constant challenges, the culture and depth of the Seneca tradition is still very much alive and celebrated. Known as “The Keepers of the Western Door” for being the westernmost among the six nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, the Seneca are a matriarchal society that has participated in what is accepted as the first modern democracy in the Western hemisphere since 1100 A.D. Yet many sacred lands have been taken by the United States, even as recently as the 1960s to build the Kinzua Dam in northwestern Pennsylvania. The Cultural Center is open seven days a week. More info at 716-945-1760 or senecamuseum.org.

SNOWMOBILING

Allegany State Park 2373 Route 1 (Summit Area), Salamanca, NY 716-354-2182 | alleganynordic.org

1-800-331-0543 | enchantedmountains.com

Allegany State Park holds our most famous area of trails - the Art Roscoe Trails, dedicated to the forefather of WNY skiing, Arthur Roscoe, who mapped out many of the logging trails now used in this area. Offering over 20 miles of groomed trails, these trails range from beginner to advanced, with varying mileage in the different loops. Rental skis are available at two locations in the park: Red House Gift Shop at the Administration Building and Summit Warming Hut. Winterized cabins are available to rent within a short walking distance from the trail system as well, so plan a whole winter getaway for the family to get in some great cross-country skiing.

There’s not much that compares to the thrill of discovering the joy of winter while cascading over trails that lead you through forested sections and over open fields covered with sparkling snow. The numerous trails weave paths throughout the county, into Allegany State Park and connect with adjacent counties. Cattaraugus County has numerous lodging facilities that offer direct or easy access to the trails and restaurants that are friendly to snowmobile groups as well. You must stay on the trails when snowmobiling in Cattaraugus County (open land does not mean it’s open to riding). Each year you can request a new map/brochure so you know where to ride. Look for updates on the trail conditions throughout the county on that website as well.

RAY EVANS SENECA THEATER

REGINA A. QUICK CENTER

716-945-1003 | rayevanssenecatheater.org

Musical Performances at St. Bonaventure

Ray Evans Seneca Theater in Salamanca is host to the Cattaraugus County Living Arts Association’s performances. It’s called the Ray Evans Theater because the famous lyricist of “Silver Bells” and “The Lemondrop Kid” was originally from Salamanca! Rightly so, the theater starts off the winter season with their “Christmas Cabaret” during the Silver Bells Festival and then hosts three more throughout the year.

The Regina A Quick Center at St. Bonaventure University (sbu.edu) brings an outstanding venue for fine musical and performance arts through the Southern Tier Symphony (www.SouthernTierSymphony.com) and a series called “Friends of Good Music”. Entering its 17th season in 2019-2020, the Southern Tier Symphony performs classical and popular music through a 3-part series each year. This year’s performances will be held in early Oct 2019 and Feb/May 2020. Find them on Facebook for details on the Series as it becomes available.

Cattaraugus County is also fortunate to have two other theatre troupes, both set in the City of Olean: Olean Theatre Workshop (716-373-SHOW, www. OleanWorkshop.com) and Olean Community Theatre (716-375-1628, www.OleanCommnityTheatre.com). Get out from the cold and spend a delightful evening in the warm indoors, watching fantastic local talent perform musicals and plays. CELEBRATE CULTURE

THE SENECA IROQUOIS NATIONAL MUSEUM

The Onöhsagwë:dé Cultural Center in Salamanca is not just a place for visitors to tour, but a resource for hands-on learning By Mary Heyl

The largest of the six Native American nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, the Seneca Nation of Indians (SNI) has a proud and rich history in western New York with nearly 8,000 citizens today. “We are a unique and living culture,” said Joe Stahlman, Ph.D., Director of the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum. “We are thriving, and our culture is not static. We continuously have new innovations, and we are making inroads into the future.” One of the latest innovations is the brand new Onöhsagwë:dé Cultural Center, which houses the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum, formerly located at 814 Broad Street in Salamanca. While the former museum’s artifacts can still be seen at the new location, Stahlman explained that there is really no comparison between the two buildings. “Even if people went to the old museum and they haven’t been to the new one, they would not be seeing the same exhibits,” he said. “Within the new building, we have the museum, we have a tribal and historic preservation office, the Nation’s archives, and the cultural center. It’s comprehensive and state-of-the-art.”

he pointed out. “I just want the public to be aware that you can visit the museum any time during the year and it’s going to be different.” This winter, Stahlman is excited to feature a Seneca winter sports exhibit. “Snow snakes is a spear-throwing game that was played by the Seneca to keep their hunting skills sharp,” he explained. “We’ll be highlighting other games that people don’t realize are native sports and activities, like snowshoeing.” Stahlman noted that within the cultural center is the conservation area, which has drawn researchers from universities across the country. “As the nation grows with our collection of items, a lot of these items can be up to 10,000 years old, though most are 200 years old or younger,” he said. “We have a lot of fiber arts, baskets and beadwork that become damaged and aged over time and need to be repaired and conserved. The conservation area allows us to preserve those items.”

The new cultural center, which opened last year, is located at 82 W. Hetzel Street in Salamanca, and it has become one of the top destinations in the region. “We’ve had record attendance this year,” Stahlman said. “We had 47,000 people come and visit us in just one year.”

Although the construction of the cultural center is complete, the museum’s collections continue to grow. According to Stahlman, the new collection area in the basement houses over 10,000 Seneca items. “We hope to grow that collection,” he added. “Yesterday, I received a donation of a walnut bow from a Salamanca resident, which will be a part of our collection.”

Local residents, school groups from all over western New York, and tourists across the United States and Europe have enjoyed the museum’s collections and permanent exhibits that chronicle the history and legacy of the SNI. The museum begins with a walk through the Creation Story and cultural beliefs of the SNI, which leads to displays of traditionally crafted items, a walk through an authentic Seneca log cabin, and the story of lacrosse and its role in Seneca culture. Exhibits include the history of the Kinzua Dam, the role of women in Seneca culture, and a variety of artwork, beadwork, carvings and more.

Importantly, the new cultural center is not just a place for visitors to tour, but a resource for hands-on learning. “We’re creating even more community craft classes,” Stahlman explained. “By the end of October, we’re going to start making moccasins. Into the fall and winter, we’ll be making corn husk dolls.” Stahlman is also looking forward to having classes on herbal and natural remedies. All classes are open to the public and are free or have a small fee to cover the cost of materials.

The museum also features new rotating exhibits throughout the year. This fall, a new exhibit will highlight the traditional music of the Seneca and Iroquois peoples. “Iroquois people, over the last few centuries, were involved in bands,” Stahlman explained. “Certain churches and political parties would have their own band, so when they would have a rally or an event, their band would accompany them, and that would entice people to attend. It used to be a really common thing until radio. We have several instruments, including a clarinet and a tuba, as well as historical photographs.” In November, two more exhibits will open that feature the work of Seneca women. “We are going to highlight Rosie Simas, who is a Seneca performing artist and mixed media artist,” Stahlman said. “She will be talking about family intimacy through historical photographs. The second exhibit features Christine Tome, a mixed media artist whose exhibit is highlighting missing and murdered indigenous women.” Stahlman, who has served in his role for the past three months, is looking forward to featuring different exhibits throughout the year. “A lot of people don’t think the museum changes, and maybe that was true in the former building, but it’s not that way anymore,”

Every Thursday in October and November (excluding Halloween and Thanksgiving), the museum hosts a speaker series from 6-7:30pm. “These nights are free and open to the public,” he said. “We’re having speakers on local crafting, filmmaking, archaeology, indigenous archaeology and more. On Oct. 24, we’ll have one of our elders, Steve Gordon, talking about how his family lost their home during the construction of the Kinzua Dam.” For more information about community craft classes and the speaker series, visit www. senecamuseum.org. The museum gift shop has many unique and beautiful items available, with an online store launching the beginning of November. “Myself and our operations manager, Hayden Haynes, are developing our own clothing line, starting with t-shirts and hoping to move into beadwork. We’ve got two new shirts coming out this month, and these items and many more will be available through our online store soon.” The Seneca-Iroquois Museum is open daily from 9am-5pm with extended hours until 8pm Tuesday through Thursday. Admission is $9.50 for adults, and discounted rates are available to seniors, students, veterans and children. To learn more, visit www.senecamuseum.org or call 716-945-1760.

TRAIL CENTRAL

Fall Into Autumn and Winter in the Allegheny National Forest Region By Daniella Griesbaum, ANF Visitors Bureau

As Pennsylvania’s only national forest, the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) is a premier nature destination with small town charm, family-owned businesses, hand-crafted artisan treasures and year-round outdoor recreational fun. This amazing forest of 513,000 acres has vast numbers of attractions, recreational opportunities, unique small-town Americana ambiance and over 600 miles of multi-use trails – which has earned the McKean County region of the Allegheny National Forest the moniker, “Trail Central.” In Autumn explore the golden, crimson, orange and yellow canopies of the Kinzua Gorge beneath the Kinzua Sky Walk. Take a stroll over the “tracks across the sky” and take in the astonishing 360-degree view of stunning autumn colors. At the end of the Skywalk, a partial glass floor showcases the Kinzua Gorge and fallen towers beneath. The Kinzua Bridge State Park, Kinzua Sky Walk, and Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center are located at 296 Viaduct Road in Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. The park is open daily from 8am until dusk. Admission is free.

ALL SEASON IS TRAIL CENTRAL IN THE ANF The snowmobile season in the ANF begins December 15, 2019. The Allegheny National Forest provides more than 360 miles of groomed trails, winding through the lush pines and forestlands. For snowmobile rentals contact Myers Motorsports at 814-779-3745. For more information about snowmobiling in the state of Pennsylvania, contact the Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association by email at info@pasnow.org or call 888-441-7772. Ice-skaters will enjoy the feeling of flight as they glide upon the smooth surface of the Callahan Ice Rink at 64 Poplin Avenue in Bradford, Pennsylvania, a fully-enclosed ice rink with heated viewing area, skate rentals, four locker rooms and concession stand – opening in the first week of November. For more information pertaining to public skating hours call 814-368-8190. The terrain on the Allegheny Highlands offers something for any skill level of crosscountry skier. The Westline Cross-Country Ski Area provides 7.8 miles of trails which are suitable for beginners and experts. Rimrock Road - a five mile round trip - and 3.5 miles of trails at Tracy Ridge are suitable for beginner to intermediate skiers.

Enjoy a crisp, refreshing day ice fishing on the Allegheny Reservoir while waiting for a bite on the line.

As for snowshoeing, lake-effect snowstorms blowing off the Great Lakes often pile deep snow in the high country of McKean County.

THE KINZUA QUALITY DEER COOPERATIVE The winter season in the ANF may be cold, but Anglers do not seem to mind as their winter excitement sets in right before dropping their fishing line into the depths of the water through the hole drilled in the ice on the Allegheny Reservoir. The Allegheny Reservoir is known for big walleye, northern pike and trout. Willow Bay, Marilla Reservoir and Chapel Bay all offer great fishing in the winter. The Kinzua Quality Deer Cooperative (KQDC) offers the unique opportunity to avoid the masses of hunters by hunting on tens of thousands of acres of Pennsylvania forestlands. With 74,000 acres of public and private forest land the KQDC offers hunters a place to harvest a buck or doe. It also has flocks of wild turkeys, numerous black bears, excellent squirrel hunting, along with grouse and other small game. Pennsylvania residents and non-residents alike can hunt the KQDC with the proper hunting licenses. To obtain a copy of the KQDC annual report, details about DMAP and important dates to remember for differentiated game hunting seasons, visit www.Facebook.com/TheKQDC. To obtain a PA Hunting License call 717-787-2084.

EXCHANGE HIBERNATION THIS WINTER FOR RECREATION Fun in the Allegheny National Forest region doesn’t stop when the weather drops; it simply adapts, with choices such as snowshoeing, ice-skating, and ice fishing. Blankets of white may be covering the treetops and lands of the Allegheny National Forest and surrounding regions during the winter season, however, there is an abundance of recreational opportunities with trails for snowmobiling, winter biking and cross-country skiing. Blazed hiking trails at Tracy Ridge are a good place to start for beginners, while the Morrison Hiking Trail is a challenge for hard-core snowshoeing and dispersed winter camping. If a cabin is more to your liking, contact 844-444-6777 or go to www.recreation.gov.

Walk by 16 Washington Street in Ellicottville, and you’ll notice the palpable activity. Hammers clang. Saws buzz. Workers, tool belts adorned, haul lumber and tile and nails in and out of the building. A piece of paper on the door reads “Closed, Reopening 10/4,” but narrow sight lines allow those passing by to catch a glimpse of a new, rapid transformation. Adventure Bound onthefly isn’t closing; in fact, the outdoor store, which reopened in 2015, remains as prevalent as ever. But owners John and Christy Rounds recognized they needed a change, and Ellicottville Coffee Company was born. “Similar resort towns across the country have one thing in common: a space for people to collaborate, relax, chat and enjoy a quality espresso drink,” he said. His vision is to create a dynamic similar to what he’s visited in his travels - a combination of coffee and retail where the customer can sit with a drink or browse a diverse product selection - or a little of both. “Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder, Colorado is an iconic outdoor store - about as iconic as they come,” he said. “After they were bought, the new owners realized that their customers yearned for an upgraded experience. Now, in the middle of the store, there’s a cafe. Customers can get coffee before and after their outdoor adventures. Our objective is to create something similar with a comfortable place to gather, combined with great coffee and gear.” “This isn’t something that just popped into my head one night,” he continued. “This process has been the culmination of a lot of research and the thought process of what’s going to be best for our shop and the value we bring to the community overall.” It’s no secret that independent brick and mortar retail stores have had to adapt with the changing habits of its consumers. With the prevalence of one-click shipping, mobile shopping and Amazon’s evil empire, it takes more than just the product to get people in the door. By combining the retail aspect with a coffee shop-style atmosphere, Rounds hopes to give the thousands of annual Ellicottville visitors another reason to come in. “We will continue to offer market leading brands that most closely reflect our values and that our customers have come to expect. We will of course be making adjustments and fine tuning the mix, but we will not stray from the outdoor heritage and authenticity that our customers have come to expect.” Earlier this year, Rounds and his family spent time in Peru, traveling throughout South America researching the best beans to bring in as their flagship offering. They landed on a blend from a 32-family Co-Op farm - organic, pesticide-free and Free Trade Certified. Those beans come individually packaged in 12oz. bags emblazoned with Ellicottville Coffee Company’s new logo. The coffee shop will offer all of the necessary caffeinated beverages you’d expect espresso drinks, lattes, cappuccinos, cold brew, French Press, pour over, etc. - plus a diverse blend of local jams, honeys, maple syrups and baked goods. Jamestown’s BioDome Project will supply the jams, and legendary Spragues Maple Syrup will also be available. “Ultimately, the goal is to offer a diverse blend of baked goods, local offerings and graband-go lunches,” Rounds said. “To start, we’ll keep it pretty light. As we continue to grow, then we’ll begin diversifying what we offer. We’re very excited. We think this is going to add an entirely new dynamic to our already great village.” Ellicottville Coffee Company will launch with a soft opening the weekends prior, of and after Ellicottville’s Fall Festival. After that, they’ll close until early December when they’ll go to seven days a week. You can purchase a bag of beans - either individually or on a subscription - online at the website. For more information on the Ellicottville Coffee Company, head to www.ellicottvillecoffee.com or follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

SAMANTHA ARMSTRONG Boss Babe

SPENCER TIMKEY Director of Stoke HAYES Future Shredder

35 Years of The Boardroom! That has to feel pretty great. How have you managed to maintain the same level of service and commitment to snowboarding? First and foremost, it’s our passion for what we do. We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to be able to sell snowboards as a means of living, and we don’t take that for granted. For the past 35 years, we’ve tried to create an atmosphere of fun, trust and dedication to our customers and standing sideways. That being said, we would be not be in the position we’re in without the loyalty of the people that shop with us - you guys are the real MVPs. We have so much fun coming to the store every day. And we try to let that fun permeate into what we do and how we engage with our customers. Our product mix has always been good, but this year might be the best yet. A powerhouse combination of brands - Burton, Lib Tech, Salomon, Jones, GNU, Roxy, Giro, Quiksilver, 686 (just to name a few) - coupled with our product knowledge puts our customers at ease buying with us because we 1. know what we’re talking about and 2. care enough to not sell you the wrong thing. After 35 years, we feel like we’re doing something right. What’s new in the shop this year? Burton Step On returns for year 3, and we’re one of the only dealers in the surrounding area to carry it. There’s a lot of new technology from all of our brands, including the Hydra Jacket from 686 (comes with built-in water pouch and drinking tube). There will also be a much larger selection of Boardroom specific apparel - hoodies, crews, t-shirts, dad caps, beanies and our iconic Burton x Boardroom bonded zip up - that will be emblazoned with both our traditional shield logo and the 35th Anniversary logo. Most snowboard boots will feature Boa, a twist-to-tighten lacing system. We are also offering seasonal ski rentals, so we can dial the entire family in as a one-stop shop. And new for this year is our Stay Tuned Pass - $99 gets you unlimited tune-ups, all year long. Your website also got a refresh. What’s new with the online store? One of the hardest things we’ve had to do as an independent brick & mortar is adapt to the prevalence of Internet sales. Instead of fighting it, we joined it. We’re proud to present our new and improved website, which really enhances the legitimacy of our store and will allow people to browse all of the great product we’ve got. You can add things to a wish list, compare products/pricing, and it’s much easier to buy/navigate than in year’s past. Plus, we’ll utilize the blog feature to keep people up to date on things happening around the store and write-ups on different products. We’ll ship anywhere in the continental United States, and for all of our Cleveland/Pittsburgh/Toronto/Buffalo/Rochester friends - if you’re coming to Ellicottville, you can simply hit “pick up in store” and we’ll have it ready to go for you.

KIMBERLY READING Owner

What’s new in the shop this year? So much newness! For starters, we now feature The North Face. In addition to the iconic apparel that represent the authentic outdoor culture of the North Face, we will be carrying the Steep Series Collection which is exclusive to specialty retail ... meaning you won’t find the product in big box retail. The Steep Series is ultra durable, technical snow gear designed by The North Face athletes. Picture Organic Clothing is also a fun new outerwear brand for us. Picture strikes the right balance of style, performance and ecoawareness. The company prides itself on using eco-friendly, recycled materials that will help with the fight against climate change. (Pretty cool stuff!) We also increased our junior selection of outerwear - offering sizes 2T-18 - from Obermeyer, Spyder, 686, Burton, Kamik, Rossignol and Orage. We also have a big selection of junior size helmets, goggles and accessories. In regards to ski and snowboard equipment ... it’s all good! Many of the skis featured at Mud, Sweat n’ Gears have struck ski test gold in SKI Magazine’s “Gear of the Year 2020.“ MSG staff picks include the Head Core Series, the Nordica Enforcer Series, the Elan Wingman 82, the Atomic Bent Chetler 100, Nordica Spitfire, the Volkl Kendo and the Volkl Mantra ... just to name a few. On the snowboard side, Nidecker boards and Vans boots are new to our shop this year. Highlights include the Nidecker Escape and the Nidecker Score for girls. We also have a deeper offering of Rome Snowboards, Thirty Two boots and Union bindings. Other featured brands include Burton, K2, Ride, Rossignol and Head. We can always count on MSG to bring in a fresh selection of lifestyle wear. What do you have on the racks? For starters, our hands-down favorite this fall is Parajumpers. Inspired by the men of the 210th Rescue Squadron (based in Anchorage, Alaska), these incredible parkas are made with hard wearing nylon, down-filled and fur-trimmed hoods ... not to mention incredible workmanship and attention to detail. If you’re looking for a jacket that can stand up to Western New York winters, Parajumpers is the answer. We also have a great selection of sweaters, flannels, casual jackets, shirts and tops, hats, scarves, and sporty bags that keep pace with your active agenda. Featured brands include Johnny Was, Kari Traa, Prana, Alp n’ Rock, Krimson Klover and many more.

You boast one of the largest selections of goggles in the area. Can you give us a rundown of some of the brands you carry and what sets them apart? Besides the killer new goggle case that the boss built, you’ll be hard pressed to find the number of brands and options we’ve got for both goggles and helmets. anon’s Magna Tech uses magnets for easily changing your lenses, plus MFI (magnetic facemask integration) where your facemask magnetically attaches to the nose of the goggle. Giro’s Range helmet uses a technology called ConForm, where the entire helmet collapses around your head to create a perfect fit. We’ve also made a decision to carry helmets only with MIPS - multi-directional impact protection system - which is an enhanced safety feature. Every brand has awesome new technology, and we’ve got tons of colorways and pricepoints for all ages.

Can you give us some details on your leasing program? Mud, Sweat n’ Gears has a broad selection of high-quality equipment that can either be rented by the day or leased for the entire season - your choice, depending upon your specific needs. If you’re only going to ski a few times, then renting might be the right way to go. If you’re intending to ski more, but aren’t ready to purchase, then leasing could be the best choice. Not sure? Ask us, and we’ll help you determine what’s appropriate for you. Our seasonal lease program is an affordable solution for families with growing kids. New and used ski or snowboard packages are available and come with season-long free tuning, boot adjustments, size upgrades for growing kids and an affordable buyout option. New lease packages give the user the pleasure of skiing on all new equipment and putting in the first scratches. Used equipment has one or more seasons use, but still in top shape. We also offer the option of leasing just a ski or snowboard boot, or renting just a ski or snowboard.

Will there be a Boardroom Banked #3 this season? There will be! Our first year running the Banked, we were kind of flying by the seat of our pants. We have some event experience, but nothing could really prepare us for the unbelievable support we had - over 100 riders! In year 2, we definitely stepped our game up. Holiday Valley has been an awesome partner, allowing us to use Champagne and shape the course how we want it. For this year, the Banked returns on Sunday, March 1 and we’ll continue to grow it, enhance it and generally make it an awesome day to come celebrate snowboarding.

You’re heading into year two of your East Aurora store. How’s it going up there? So far, so good! We spent the summer months working on the second phase of building renovations and the outcome looks great! While the two stores are similar in branding, product selection and service, the East Aurora store isn’t an exact replica of the Ellicottville store ... it has a personality of its own. In addition to the leading ski and snowboard brands, we’ve added more lifestyle brands such as Patagonia, Kuhl and Sorel, just to name a few. Moving forward, the store in East Aurora will stay open year round.

GREG DEKDEBRUN Apex Dealer

You’ve run Dekdebruns Snowsports for many years, but last year was Year One as Dekdebruns Apex Store. How did it go last season? My, how time flies when you are selling a phenomenal product. We cannot believe that we have loved Apex for 14 years! Every year we sell more Apex boots than the previous season. Last season was no exception. I was pleasantly surprised that we could sell more product considering our limited hours. Customers liked our use of appointments. They felt that they got more quality time because of the appointment schedule without interruption. And it’s true! With an appointment, we’re able to provide personal attention to our customers during the entirety of their appointment time slot. I discovered that if someone makes an appointment, they are serious about the product and making a purchase. As WNY’s exclusive dealer of the Apex brand, can you describe the Apex boot system and how it works? The premise behind the Apex boot is comfort, convenience, warmth and performance. This is accomplished with a two-part system. The walking boot is designed to do just that; it allows you to walk and drive in a comfortable boot (think snowboard boot). Snowboard boots have always featured a soft exterior and comfort that no ski boot could offer. Snowboarders could perform all day on the mountain, and then walk around at the end of the day in the same boots and never worry about loosening them up. The Apex Walkable Support Boot provides the comfort and warmth of a snowboard boot that you can ski in all day long. The inner boot is fully heat moldable and can be re-heated multiple times. The material that allows this is extremely warm, and insulation is added to many models. The outer boot uses the dual BOA closure system for customizing the fit to each individual’s needs. They have a full walking sole for good traction. The second part, called the chasis, is where the performance comes from. It is very rigid laterally, which helps the skier to put his/her skis on edge. It also offers adjustments to control the desired amount of forward lean and flex. The chassis can also be adjusted for canting per the individual’s needs. It is nanofiber-reinforced for lightweight, high-modulus support, and is designed to work optimize the performance of today’s modern-shaped skis. There are three new boots for this season and most notably, a true ladies big mountain boot. While Apex has packed many improvements into their boots, they have kept pricing the same. This season’s boot line-up includes: • XP ANTERO – Men’s Big Mountain carries over from last season and now available up to a size 32. • ANTERO-S – Ladies Big Mountain is a brand new top-of-the-line boot with stacked Boa’s and now up to size 27 (no more having to buy a men’s boot)! • CRESTONE – Men’s All-Mountain Performance • BIANCA – Ladies All-Mountain Performance With any new boot, it’s important to have a good fit. Are you still offering boot fitting services and custom footbeds? I believe that the footbed is the basis for the best fit and the highest performance. We highly suggest a custom footbed to every customer who doesn’t already have one. The Apex boot doesn’t require a lot of boot fitting. In most cases, once we heat fit the inner boot, no more fitting is required. That’s the beauty of the Apex boot. It’s an investment that will certainly provide you with a high quality, low maintenance experience every time you slide them on and head to the slopes. Your hours of operation ... We are trying to work by appointment. Our Fall appointments are on Fridays, Saturday afternoons, and Sunday mornings. When we are here at the shop, we place our A-frame sign out front. If you see it, come on up (we are located on the upper floor). For appointments, visit our website www.dekdebruns.com or call 716-490-1621.

TREY CLAUSS Team Leader

This is a big year for The City Garage. Year 20 to be exact. Any celebrations in the works? October 9, 1999 Fall Festival was opening day. Fast forward to 2019 and we have kept the party going! We are going to kick off the 20th year with a “Survivor Sunday” shop party after the closing bell of Fall Fest ‘19 ... and plan to keep the celebration going all season long! Let us in on your top product picks for this season. K2 IS BACK, BABY! After many years of wandering the slopes aimlessly, K2 has found their way back to the top of the mountain ... where they belong! The all-new Mindbender ski line-up for men and women has been on fire. They (K2) primed the pump last season with a limited release of the ski line; we had them mounted up as fast as we could. Starting at a 90 millimeter under foot, they will slice and dice. We will have them available for retail and rental throughout the season. May I make a note, it was the first official ski sold of the ‘19/‘20 season! Here Here for K2! There’s a new ski line coming out of Ellicottville, and The City Garage is the exclusive dealer. Can you cue us in? Ellicottville is a ski town and now we can say that there are skis made in this ski town. For the past couple of seasons we have been working with EVL Skis at the shop. Anywhere from finishing the bases and edges to mounting up demo/prototype skis for a select few to test. This season they will be launching a full assault in the public market. Look out for a billboard heading south on Route 219, a small custom run of skis for sale, and a few to try via the back shop at The City Garage ... Telemark & Alpine! Cross country skis, telemark, snowshoes. Indulge … We have stayed true to our roots since 1999. Skiers Ski! Catering to the ski market in pretty much every category available. Telemark is the red headed stepchild of the alpine world, letting your freak flag fly in a sorts. Cross country is where all of this nonsense started. The Norwegians were clearly onto something when they took to the snow-covered mountain on skinny long skis and leather boots. A means of transportation if you will. Now we have groomed trails, tech clothing, and fast no-wax skis. Get out there and enjoy! If you prefer just a leisurely stroll through the woods or backyard, maybe give our snowshoe rental department a try. Or better yet, come on in and pick a pair up to buy. Then you’ll have no excuses to get outside and bask in all of winter’s glory! Care to brag about your boot fitter? Where do we start!? Tim “the bootman” has been fitting boots since well ... before I was born! (1983). Tim has cultivated quite the rep for fixing people’s feet. Near and far, young and old, beginners to seasoned pros, he can do it all. Wintertime events we should keep our eyes out for ... We have signed on for a 2nd year with the fine folks at Holiday Valley to host our Sunday Funday Demo Day. Located at the base of Yodeler Lodge, we will be set up Sunday mornings starting at the end of January for 4 Sundays til the end of the season. 1/26, 2/9, 3/1, & 3/22, 2020. These are FREE demo days for YOU. February 28, 2020 - TELESTOCK ! This is a one-day show that is one not to miss. We have been doing this event at Holiday Valley on The Champagne Sundeck located at the Yodeler Lodge for years. This is a day devoted to telemark. Once again, a FREE event with product from our top brands for people to try. Group lessons, fun races, human slalom, sausage cookout, and tons of great people! You’re the only ski shop in town that’s open year-round ... Summer in Ellicottville attracts a wide variety of people, which normally are not skiers. It’s nice to chat with people and hear about their travels and adventures. Our summer offerings include functional clothing and footwear, fun camping supplies, and the best coolers in the world ... YETI! Summertime is the best time to get the deals on ski equipment too!
