By Spencer Timkey When the fall colors are in their twilight and we’re knocking on winter’s door, there’s one event at Holiday Valley to bridge the dreaded November gap - the Beer & Wine Festival, presented by Holiday Valley, Ellicottville Brewing Company, Southern Tier Brewing Company and Wegman’s. Now in its 14th year, Beer & Wine has become a favorite event for a contingent of fermentation lovers.

Holiday Valley will again utilize all three floors of the Holiday Valley Lodge (The Main, as it will forever be known as to me). Different music on each level will make it feel like you’re walking into an entirely new bar every time you ascend/descend a set of stairs (or elevator). The basement - or ‘wine cellar’ - will have a more subdued vibe, with the Michael Buble-esque Michael Nugent serenading you. Wineries include Ellicottville’s own Winery of Ellicottville, Silver Creek’s Willow Creek Winery, Merritt Estate and many more. Head to the main floor for The Tim Britt Band and the heartbeat of the party to pick up. Here, you’ll find your favorite beers. Personally, I prefer either a Southern Tier IPA or EBC (Ellicottville Brewing Company) Stainless Steel Obsession. But if you’re looking to broaden your beer flavor horizon, don’t sweat it - you’ll get to choose between breweries like Victory, Big Ditch, Voodoo, Brooklyn Brewery, Boston Beer, John Harvard’s … shall I continue? There will be a ton of tasty options for every palette - from IPAs to Sessions to Ciders. On the third floor, “Buffalo’s Favorite Party Band” - Hit N’ Run - covers your favorite songs, and seeing as you’ll be drinking, go ahead and sing along. (You’ll sound great, I promise!)

Tickets are available at www.holidayvalley.com/brewfest, by calling 716-699-2345, or at your nearest Wegman’s starting October 19th, so do not delay if you’re interested in coming. Beer & Wine Fest always sells out well in advance, and if you talk to anyone that’s been, they’ll tell1/2 you MARATHON it’s some of theAND best 5K fun OPEN they have all year. TO ALL • COSTUMES ENCOURAGED People I’ve talked to love the event for a multitude of reasons. One said he loves the Friday dinner. Another said how much fun he has both with his friends (which is an annual trip for them) and the new people he meets every year. Another even met his wife at Beer & Wine Fest! If that’s not reason enough to check it out, I’m not sure what is. When the festivities end on Saturday night, you don’t want to be wondering how you’re going to get home. Holiday Valley is offering some really great lodging packages, and you can stay at The Inn (bottom of the hill down the sidewalk), Tamarack Club (adjacent to the HV Lodge) or at one of the many Holiday Valley rental properties. Don’t risk it! Get a group of friends together and stay the night. Options include 1 night for Friday or Saturday, or 2 nights with tickets to both the Dinner and Festival. And Holiday Valley lodging guests have a free shuttle after the Festival to Ellicottville and back.

Saturday, Nov. 11 is the actual Beer & Wine Festival, but Holiday Valley invites you to come Friday night for the pre-Fest dinner. This year’s theme is “Beer on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter.” The dinner will offer food and beer pairings; you can get a head start on everyone else before Saturday. Friday night is annually a blast, and you shouldn’t miss out. There will be beer/bourbon tastings to accompany dinner.

Going down on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10-11, Beer & Wine Fest brings breweries, wineries and visitors from all over the area. Playing host to over 100 brews/vintages from 30 beer and wine makers, there will be something for fans of all forms of liquid courage.

BOB McCARTHY’S IRISH CHRISTMAS | Friday, Dec. 1 @ 6:00pm | EBC Hard to believe it was over a year ago that Ellicottville lost Bob McCarthy aka “The Voice of Ellicottville. Bob was instrumental in helping many youth programs here over the years, with his favorite being “Santa’s Workshop.” To support this endeavor, Bob created the event, Irish Christmas, over a decade ago. Since his passing, many people have stepped forward to make sure that the event - now renamed “Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas” - continues. With the help of many members of the community, The Rotary Club of Ellicottville made last year’s event a great memorial to Bob. It was the most successful yet as the community came together to honor an amazing man. It was McCarthy who said, “I love doing Irish Christmas … it is a night of Irish magic. I don’t know how the magic gets there, but it just does. That’s the beauty of it.” So on Friday, December 1, the magic will continue at the Ellicottville Brewing Company on Monroe. McCarthy’s wagon will be parked outside of EBC starting at 7:00am, where the public can leave new toys and unwrapped gifts for Santa’s Workshop and the Sheriff’s Santa Program. These programs collect gifts to help make Christmas a little special for less fortunate families. Monetary donations are also welcomed and can be sent to Rotary at PO Box 101, Ellicottville, NY 14731. In the evening, a number of restaurants will convene at the brewery to serve a special Irish dish at a reasonable price, or you can order from the great EBC menu. Final details for this year’s Irish Christmas are being worked out, but you can bet the event will continue the way Bob intended (including the fabulous pie auction), and we’re certain that some of Bob’s creations will be the highlight of the evening’s auction. Local craftsman Ed Frederickson will again create unique pie boxes, a chest - and rumor has it - great birdhouses in the McCarthy tradition for the auction. The spirit of the season is unmatched in Ellicottville, and Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas is a perfect opportunity to share it with great friends. Sixty Years, Sixty Trails, More Snowmaking ... MORE FUN! @holidayvalley

@evlsnowedin @agow24

@andreasolar716

@alyssahawkswell

By Spencer Timkey When Holiday Valley’s founders opened their tiny, rural NY ski resort in 1958, would they have ever dreamt of what it would become? Three beautiful lodges, 60 trails, 13 lifts and a resort that hums all year long. Over the past 60 years, a combination of strong leadership, innovation, and a loyal, diehard ski/snowboard base has been the continual catalyst for Holiday Valley’s success. We’ve come a long way from one lodge and tow ropes. Through good winters, great winters, so-so winters and one really bad (looking at you, 2015-16) winter, Holiday Valley has maintained its status as one of the premier resorts on the East Coast. While at its core it remains a ski resort, HV has expanded its amenities to include conference centers, a beautiful wedding venue, an aerial adventure park/ mountain coaster and much more. It truly is a four-season destination. Always putting money back into itself, the Valley’s reinvestments this season include new snowmaking guns, a new Mistletoe Lean-To, a new Warming Hut at the top of Cindy’s, two new trails and two new Pisten Bully grooming cats. Strategically located less than three hours from big population centers (think Toronto, Buffalo, Cleveland and Pittsburgh), ski and snowboard lovers of all ages proudly - definitively - call HV their home resort. With $3.3 million going back in this year, the grand total of reinvestment over the past 24 years has hit a cool $126 million.

A SNOWMAKING POWERHOUSE And while we are blessed with Nor’Easters and lake effect (shoutout to Lake Erie), through many of its 60 winters, the Valley has kept its proverbial head above water by constant reinvestment in its powerhouse snowmaking systems. This summer, the resort added 70 HKD KLIK Automated Snowmaking guns as well as 10 mobile HKD Viper units - bringing the grand total to 701, with 371 of those being automated.

Crews from Dana John Construction tore the old warming hut down and built it again from scratch. It will offer better views of the hill, more windows, and a wraparound deck.

TWO NEW TRAILS To celebrate the 60th anniversary, the Valley has built two brand-new trails to bring its grand total of slopes and trails to 60. Aptly named Slingshot and Boomerang, they will allow guests who aren’t at expert or intermediate levels to access parts of the resort easier. They will begin at the top of the lower Northwind headwall, with one taking you to the bottom of Mardi Gras, while the other circumvents the expert Cross Cut so you can get to the bottom of Morning Star. Night skiing is getting tweaked a bit as well. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the lifts will close at 9:00pm, while Wednesdays through Sundays will remain open until 10:00pm. And great news for you night owls - the night ticket will begin at 3:30pm this year, an hour earlier than the traditional 4:30pm start time.

APRES AT JOHN HARVARD’S BREW HOUSE Half the fun of hitting a ski resort is the apres! After a strong day on the slopes, a cold beverage is the perfect way to end it. John Harvard’s Brew House, home to over 20 beers on tap, has views of the slopes and a (very cool) concrete bar. Bartenders will ask you how your day on the slopes went, all the while keeping you satisfied with drinks and food. “The food and drinks are excellent, but nothing makes a good apres experience like an awesome bartender,” said Franco Brady, Holiday Valley’s Director of Food & Beverage (of CenterPlate). “The brick oven (for pizzas) is always hot, and the views of the slopes especially when they’re lit up at night - complements the experience so well.”

Superior in the snowmaking world, HKD’s automated system allows the Valley’s crew to monitor temperature, humidity and other weather factors and adjust the system accordingly. Now, instead of a crew having to haul guns and hoses on the hill when there might be a good weather window, they can turn the guns on and off from their home base - or from an app on their smartphones. With the addition of the guns this summer, Holiday Valley now boasts the largest HKD-specific automated snowmaking system on the East Coast.

John Harvard’s square-shaped bar allows you to communicate with other visitors and swap stories. Or, if you’ve got the family, there’s tons of additional seating. Your favorite beers are all on tap, including seasonals from Ellicottville Brewing Company and Southern Tier Brewing.

Here’s an example of just how incredible the snowmaking capability is at HV: Last March, the crew had a solid weather window (low humidity, 12º-20º, not a lot of wind) and laid the hammer - busting out over 150 acre-feet of snow. The maximum capacity for the system is 8,000 gallons a minute, so it helps when you’ve got a reservoir (Spruce Lake) with over 160 million gallons of water.

Two very underrated activities at the resort are the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster and the Tubing Park. The coaster, located at the base of Tannenbaum, takes you up the hill in a two-person sled and then loops and twirls back down through the trees. Bonus? You control the speed with two hand brakes.

Additions for automated snowmaking trails this year include: lower Foxfire, lower Cindy’s, Cross Cut, Chute and upper Northwind. The resort has also installed and replaced new snowmaking lines to continue to boost the efficiency of the overall system.

ON-THE-MOUNTAIN FACELIFTS

Iconic as they were beautiful, the Cindy’s Warming Hut (which still utilized a gas stove) and the Mistletoe Lean-To were fan favorites. But every so often, old needs a facelift. This season, the Valley is proud to reintroduce the new Mistletoe Lean-To, tweaked a bit to make it much more accommodating for passing skiers. And the Cindy’s Warming Hut, although it was super old school (and super cool) definitely needed a little makeover.

MORE THRILLS ... ON A COASTER, ON A TUBE

“The coaster is a huge hit,” says Jane Eshbaugh, Marketing Director at Holiday Valley. “Parents can ride with their kids (as long as the combined weight is under the limit) and it’s a great time, especially at night. If you’ve done the coaster and want to experience some more high-speed thrills, the Tubing Park is for you.” The Tubing Park, located just a short drive down Route 242 east of the village, has 22 lanes with quality snowmaking to match. When it’s super cold, put those goggles on - because you’re going to go fast, Ricky Bobby. There’s a special vibe around Holiday Valley and Ellicottville that’s validated by the evergrowing number of people who come to visit. Also, fair warning from a local kid - when you come, do NOT mention El Nino in any shape, size, or variation. Thanks in advance.

You know it’s going to snow and there will be some epic days for skiing this season. Where are you going to spend those cherished days?

If you’re a Member at HoliMont (North America’s largest private ski club), you know that it is an experience that can be tough to put into words because it really is just that - an incredible winter experience. Any time throughout the season you can hit the slopes and set your edge on our pristinely groomed corduroy and carve down one of HoliMont’s 52 slopes. But as with most things in life, picturing it doesn’t do it justice.

Time spent at HoliMont is like a mini-vacation every weekend. And most of all, it’s quality time spent with your family and friends. Whether you are new to skiing or a seasoned pro, you’ll love the quality of snow and impeccable grooming. Statistically, many powder days happen while you’re at work. There’s nothing worse than looking out your office window watching it dump snow. Stop daydreaming about first tracks and go get them! For just $250 you can treat yourself to 10 weekday lift tickets to HoliMont. Find out why a freshy morning on Greer has instigated more “call in sick” days than the flu. Call or go online to purchase your Weekday Experience Pass before November 12th to get the best deal of the season. After your day of skiing and boarding, we recommend you take advantage of some of the new improvements made at The Mont during the off-season. If you have enough gas in the tank, check out the newly graded and widened cross-country trail. Snowshoeing and XC skiing are great ways to cap off the day or take a break from the slopes. Cozy up in the new lean-to with friends and family for an outdoor experience beyond compare. The new multipurpose trail is open to the public and is great for snowshoes, cross-country skis and fat bikes.

HoliMont still has original members (the club was founded in 1962) who are active in the club. Those people can tell you stories about hiking the hills in the off-season in order to remove any large rocks that could possibly cause damage to skis. Or they can convey tales about how the main chalet once doubled as a garage for the first snow groomer purchased by the club. Perhaps you’ll hear about how the chairlifts used to have numbers (i.e. One, Two, and Three) for names instead of being called Exhibition Express, Cascade, or Greer. After all the stories are said and done, what you will really find out is that becoming a member at HoliMont is about more than involvement in a club; it basically becomes a home away from home and a vacation that you can enjoy all winter long. Now is the time to check out the Discover HoliMont program. For about the cost of a full season’s pass, you and your family can try the club for 4 months of skiing and riding. For more information on how affordable a season at HoliMont can be, please go online to www.discoverholimont.com or call the HoliMont office at 716-699-2320.

@holidayvalley

The great news about our loyal readers picking up this particular issue of SNOWED-IN, is that it truly is marking the change in seasons, and winter is indeed just around the corner. A safe assumption, is also that you’re well aware of the ski resort prowess Holiday Valley and HoliMont bring to the table. Both are pioneers in their respective categories (public/ private resorts), who continue to re-invest in their properties and the community of Ellicottville annually, and we’d hedge a bet that you’ll be visiting one if not both frequently this season. But, should you find yourself visiting town in the “off-season,” you don’t need to worry about finding something to do. The spring, summer, and fall months are very much an “on-season” here in the village and surrounding areas, and here’s proof …

SKY HIGH ADVENTURE PARK

One of the most popular attractions bringing people to town during the warmer months is Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley, now in its 7th season of operation (where does the time go!) Speaking from experience, this park is AWESOME. Purchase your Sky High pass on-site and have access to 13 different courses that will challenge you both mentally and physically. Not to worry however - the adventure park is well staffed with plenty of enthusiastic attendants who can talk you through any tricky situation, or if you get in a real jam, even assist you back to the ground. Of the 13 courses, you’ll find a well-balanced array of ability levels, similar to your favorite ski resort. From the novice lower level courses to the intimidating sounding “Commando” course, there is truly something for everyone. The 3-D Climbing Forest adds even more aerial activity; it consists of bouldering holds affixed to trees up to 60’ in height and varying difficulty, which can provide a challenge to even the most skilled climber. And the zip lines - the best part! Unwind a bit after you tackle the courses with a ride down the fun-for-all-ages mountain coaster, and you’ve covered all your bases. There are plenty of ways to bundle these attractions together to save $ - find individual and bundle prices for the aerial park, the 3-D climbing forest and the mountain coaster on the holidayvalley.com website. You can even reserve your sessions online. We absolutely guarantee you will leave Sky High exhausted and smiling. Given the popularity of the park, it is highly suggested you call them at 716-699-444 to make a reservation.

DOUBLE BLACK DIAMOND ... FORE!

Sticking with the Holiday Valley theme for a moment, the Double Black Diamond golf course can be found at the main base area of Holiday Valley Resort. This par 70, approximately 6,000yard course will challenge even the most polished handicapper. With spectacular views from many of the tee boxes, even if you’re having a heck of a time hitting that little white ball straight (guilty) you will still enjoy yourself. There’s also a driving range and practice green at the base of the resort, just across the street. Holiday Valley offers great golf packages if you’re looking to stay overnight, and a tee time is always recommended – just call 716-699-2345 or stop into the generously stocked and award winning Holiday Valley Golf Shop, where you certainly will be able to make yourself look like a pro, even if your swing isn’t up to “par.”

@evillebikeandbean

TRAILS FOR TWO WHEELS

One of the other great secrets of the region is the incredible mountain biking trail system found between Holiday Valley and HoliMont, and the surrounding forests. Challenging single track mixed with a variety of other terrain is just one of the reasons the IMBA has gone as far as to label the trails in the area “EPIC.” With over 35 miles of trails locally, you’re sure to find something that is up your alley, and you will certainly see why people come from far, far away to hit the trails here. Recently, WNYMBA and Holiday Valley partnered to create a flow trail at the resort, which provides a fun and relatively easy way to get around the mountain on two wheels. If you’re looking for more info on the trail system, some gear for your ride, or some delicious grub to refuel after your ride, make sure you pop into Bike & Bean in downtown EVL for all the goods. You can also give them a shout at 716-699-2453.

COOL DOWN

All finished? Take a dip in Spruce Lake (top of Holiday Valley), or go for a refreshing dip and cocktail at the lively Holiday Valley pool complex & Cabana Bar (Main Lodge) ... nothing beats poolside service. Additionally, paddleboarding and kayaking has taken Ellicottville by storm, with Adventure Bound offering lessons and rentals at Spruce Lake on weekends through summer. Give them a shout to see what all the buzz is all about, at 716-217-4047.

FESTIVALS IN THE VILLAGE

It’s very rare that something isn’t going on during each of your Ellicottville visits. Along with the notorious array of evolving shops, bars and restaurants, Ellicottville plays host to a slew of festivals and celebrations throughout the “winter waiting period.” Among the largest is the Summer Music Festival held each Independence Day weekend, which brings in major recording artists from the likes of Pat Benatar, Rusted Root, Grand Funk Railroad and more, to entertain the masses on a slopeside amphitheater at Holiday Valley. Another personal favorite of mine is the annual Taste of Ellicottville, which gives local restaurants the chance to show off samplings of their staple entrees, or venture into uncharted territory with some new, off-the-wall creations. There is also Rock n’ Roll Weekend which features killer tunes and an impressive village-wide car show, Stroll the Streets - a Friday night series offering FREE entertainment on the sidewalks of downtown, and of course everyone’s favorite event, Fall Festival, which literally completely transforms Ellicottville into a mass celebration of the approaching winter season. Beer tents, vendors, music, and of course the brilliant fall foliage we look forward to annually can be expected, so put on those party pants and stamp it on your calendar; head over to www.ellicottvilleny.com for a complete schedule of yearly events. With so much to do, what are you waiting for? Get down to Ellicottville and take advantage of all the things we have to offer, no matter what the season is. After all, no one likes seasonal friends when there are four seasons of fun to be had … right here in this wonderful village!

There is something for everyone in the family at Pumpkville! Make your way through the 10-acre corn maze that is built in the shape of Curious George from his new upcoming movie. Indulge in homemade baked goods (pumpkin donuts anyone?), shop specialty craft items, visit the animals, tour the cider mill, enjoy the rides and other hands-on activities, and of course, pick out that perfect pumpkin from the the pick-your-own pumpkin patch. This year Pumpkinville unveiled a new train with six cars and a caboose; just take your spot at the newly built depot to board! Pumpkinville also features pumpkin jumpin’ pillows, corn cannon shoot, pony rides and much more in this popular Fall Village-style family destination!

Get in some late fall hiking as you meander around two-story tall rock formations steeped in a unique and fascinating history. Crunch crunch crunch through the leaves that have fallen on the mile-long path, leading you from the top of one gigantic rock, down, around and even under other gigantic rocks. From the “vista view” at the beginning of the trail, you can see out 35 miles on a clear day - the perfect spot to take in all of the beautiful colors of Fall. After your hike, tour the museum, watch the video on the trolley that used to run up to the Park, view the fluorescent rock room or find a rockin’ gift from the souvenir shop. A visit to Rock City Park is unforgettable, and definitely worth a return trip.

New York’s Amish Trail can be found along the Western border of Cattaraugus County. In late Autumn, take a scenic drive through the rural countryside and visit Amish roadside stands and shops overflowing with the fruits of their summer labor - fresh homemade jams and jellies, colorful handcrafted rugs and quilts, woven baskets, handmade furniture, fun wooden toys and yummy goats milk fudge. Travel picturesque backroads and experience breathtaking landscapes as you visit with the shop owners. Find your way using the Amish Trail map available in the Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County brochure. Shopping along NY’s Amish Trail is a wonderful way to jumpstart the holiday gift-giving season.

Have a flurry of fun on 425+ miles of trails that weave paths throughout Cattaraugus County, into Allegany State Park and connect with adjacent counties. There’s nothing that will have you shouting “Let it Snow, Let it Snow!” more than cascading over freshly fallen snow. Cattaraugus County has numerous lodging facilities that offer direct or easy access to the trails, and restaurants that are friendly to snowmobile groups as well. Allegany State Park holds our most famous area of trails - the Art Roscoe Cross Country Trails - dedicated to the forefather of Western NY skiing, Arthur Roscoe, who mapped out many of the logging trails now used in this area. This trail system offers over 20 miles of groomed cross country trails, ranging from beginner to advanced, with varying mileage in the different loops. (Snowshoeing is not allowed on the groomed XC trails, but don’t worry fellow snowshoers. There are plenty of other trails for you.) Seneca Iroquois National Museum

Salamanca Rail Museum

Ray Evans Seneca Theater

Seneca Gaming & Entertainment

By Mary Heyl Known as the “Gateway to Allegany State Park,” the city of Salamanca is located on the reservation of the Seneca Nation of Indians, the largest tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy of Nations. Salamanca is the only city in the United States to lie almost entirely on a Native American Reservation; however, Salamanca’s rich history encompasses so much more than this geographic distinction. This winter, visitors are encouraged to take a cultural journey through Salamanca, where the history of the Seneca Nation, the legacy of Salamanca’s railroad system, and the city’s celebration of one of the most iconic songwriters of the 20th century can be explored and enjoyed by every member of the family.

SENECA-IROQUOIS NATIONAL MUSEUM Steeped in the tradition of the Seneca Nation, Salamanca celebrates its heritage through the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum, where visitors can learn about the “Keepers of the Western Door.” The museum, which is located just off I-86 at 814 Broad Street, has a variety of permanent and temporary exhibits open to the public. Visitors can begin their visit in the Longhouse Room, which showcases a partially reconstructed longhouse much like the ones that the Seneca people would have lived in during the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum then guides visitors to the Log Cabin Room, that shares the Senecas’ transition from the longhouse to log cabins like the ones occupied by colonial settlers and British soldiers. One of the most moving exhibits in the museum, “This is Where We Walked,” shares the United States’ infamous intrusion and destruction of Seneca communities with the construction of the Kinzua Dam in the 1960s. Be sure to explore the museum’s newest temporary exhibit, which features the artwork of Victoria Ransom, who was born and raised in Akwesasne Mohawk Territory and now attends the University of Ottawa for her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with a minor in Aboritinal Studies. Her art speaks of the Indian Act and how it affected her personal experiences, family, friends and others in her community. Through her art, which was created in memory of her grandfather, Ransom seeks to awaken the public to Indigenous issues in a creative and inspiring way. Also new this fall, the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum is offering a lecture series running Thursday nights from 6:00-7:30pm now through November. A variety of speakers will give presentations on a variety of topics including the Thomas Indian School, the history of the Senecas’ Haudenosaune ancestors, the role of Native Americans in popular music, Native American literature, Haudenosaune food and more. Visit the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum’s Facebook page for a full schedule and information about other upcoming events.

early 1900s, as well as a variety of train gifts and memorabilia. For more information, contact the museum at 716-945-3133 or visit Salamanca Rail Museum on Facebook.

SILVER BELLS IN THE CITY The city hosts special events throughout the year that celebrate Salamanca’s culture and heritage. The Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce works to build tourism and support economic revitalization by focusing on what makes Salamanca unique. One of the chamber’s biggest events is Silver Bells in the City, held each year in honor of Ray Evans, the award-winning lyricist of the iconic Christmas song, “Silver Bells.” Evans was born in Salamanca in 1915, and went on to pursue a successful songwriting career with composer and songwriter Jay Livingston. The duo was known for writing television themes like the theme for Mr. Ed, as well as songs for movies in the 1940s and 1950s. Evans and Livingston won three Academy Awards for their movie tunes, most notably “Que Sera Sera,” sung by Doris Day, for the Alfred Hitchcock movie, The Man Who Knew Too Much. Evans’ “Silver Bells,” originally written for a 1951 Bob Hope film, is most remembered in Salamanca and is the theme of the city’s Christmas festivities in December. On Saturdays during the month, visitors can look forward to free Christmas-themed movies screened at the Ray Evans Seneca Theater on Main Street. Built during World War II and originally called “The Seneca,” it is dedicated to promoting the arts in Salamanca, and stands as a tribute to the legacy of Evans. At the beginning of December, the season kicks off with Salamanca’s Annual Light Up the Night event at Jefferson Park. There, the Christmas tree is lit for the season and carolers fill the night with music. Throughout the month, Christmas Craft Shows and other fun events take place throughout the city. For more information about the Silver Bells Festival, find Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce on Facebook or visit www.SalamancaChamber.org.

The gaming room features over 340 video gaming machines where guests can bet credits worth a penny or up to $10. Their most popular games include Cadillac Jack, Multimedia, and Bally’s, and the facility now features a brand new non-smoking game room.

The Seneca-Iroquois National Museum’s hours are 9:00am-5:00pm Monday through Saturday. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 7 and up, and $3 for seniors and college students. Children ages 6 and under are admitted free. Entrance to the museum’s gift shop is always free - be sure to check out their beautiful array of gifts including genuine turquoise jewelry, hand-cut wooden ornaments, beaded purses and more. A TRAIN LOVER’S DREAM COME TRUE

SENECA ALLEGANY RESORT & CASINO

Salamanca’s location near the Allegheny National Forest has made it one of the biggest sources of hardwood in Western New York, especially throughout the 20th century. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a large system of railroads was constructed in order to transport these large quantities of lumber nationwide; at one point, Salamanca was known as a “railroad city.” Traces of this industrial past still remain in Salamanca … just head over to the Salamanca Rail Museum, located at 170 North Main Street.

Just down the street, Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino invites you to put your luck to the test in their world-class facility. There are endless ways to win big at the most sought after slot, table, keno and poker games in the region. The casino now has a new gaming floor design to improve guests’ comfort and privacy with increased slot machine bases with built-in foot rests and larger adjustable chairs that rotate 360 degrees. After a fun night of gaming, there’s no need to leave the building: stay in one of the casino’s 413 rooms and suites with upscale amenities, comfortable pillow-top beds, and a relaxing indoor pool. Don’t forget to book a spa service or two!

The museum, which is run entirely by local volunteers, is free to the public and stands as a beautiful reminder of a bygone era. The museum itself is a fully restored depot constructed in 1912 by the Buffalo, Rochester, and Pittsburgh Railway. According to volunteer Stan Carlson, the museum is a train lover’s dream come true, as it contains three model train layouts, which train enthusiasts work on year ‘round. Carlson encourages visitors to explore the many artifacts and photographs from Salamanca’s railways and those throughout Western NY. In addition to the exhibits inside, the museum has outdoor exhibits with actual cabooses and boxcars. The Salamanca Rail Museum is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00am-5:00pm and Sundays from noon-5:00pm April 1-December 31. From January-March, the museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays from noon-4:00pm (weather permitting). Carlson encourages visitors to visit the museum’s gift shop, which includes reprinted postcards of the depot from the

Of course, there’s more to enjoy at the Seneca Allegany Casino than just games. The casino is known for its delicious selection of restaurants including fine dining at the Western Door Steakhouse or Patria, casual dining at the Thunder Mountain Buffet, and quick dining at the Bear Claw Café. Why not enjoy a great meal before taking in a performance by one of the casino’s top notch entertainers scheduled this season? See their Fall line-up at right. Book your stay, purchase tickets, and learn more at senecaalleganycasino.com. From the beautiful landscape of the Allegheny Mountains and the Allegheny River to the city’s exciting gaming facilities, there is no lack of education, entertainment, and enjoyment in Salamanca. A unique cultural experience is sure to await you; now all that’s left to do is plan your visit!

Witches’ Night Out

Randolph Retail Company

Located just twenty miles from Ellicottville, the historic village of Randolph, New York is a great place to spend the weekend throughout the fall and winter seasons! Unique shops, delicious restaurants, and a full schedule of fall and winter events will not only fill your weekend calendar, but will leave you wanting to come back for more.

NEW YORK’S AMISH TRAIL Randolph’s relationship with the nearby Conewango Amish community is apparent everywhere you look! From the buggies that travel up and down Main Street to the horse tie-outs at the Cattaraugus County Bank, Randolph has a unique blend of old world charm and modern life. Most recently, the Randolph Area Community Development Corporation partnered with local Amish builders to create a one-of-a-kind shelter for Amish horses and buggies to stay sheltered from all kinds of weather. This unique structure was designed by a local architect as a place for horses to be tied out in the center of town, have a drink of water, stay shaded from the summer sun and protected from winter’s snow and wind. See it for yourself at the center of town at the extended parking lot of Randolph’s Arrowmart - the intersection of Main Street and Jamestown Street. You may even see a buggy or two as you drive by! Autumn is one of the best times of year for visitors to spend a beautiful afternoon exploring New York’s Amish Trail, which begins in Randolph and continues through Cattaraugus County. Visitors can enjoy the foliage and explore Amish shops, bake stands and produce stands along the way. Whether you’re looking for a gorgeous handmade quilt, sturdy furniture, or a homemade pie, you’re sure to find it along the Amish Trail. Randolph’s Welcome Center at 72 Main Street has free Amish Trail maps available for you to start your self-guided tour; Saturdays are the best day to plan your trip, as all Amish businesses are closed on Sundays. For an in-depth experience of one of the largest Old Order Amish communities in the country, book a guided tour with one of Randolph’s experienced Amish Trail guides by calling 716-358-9701 ext. 208.

FISH TO SEE, FISH TO EAT ... AND A MAMMOTH TOO! No visit to Randolph is complete without a trip to the Randolph DEC Fish Hatchery, located just 2 miles east of the village at 10943 Hatchery Road. The Randolph Hatchery is one of just twelve hatcheries in New York State; these hatcheries stock fish in over 1,200 public waters across the state. The Randolph Hatchery mainly raises brook, brown, and rainbow trout, and stocks public waters in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Wyoming counties. The Randolph Hatchery, which is one of the oldest hatcheries in New York, is most known for stocking brook trout, commonly known as “brookies,” which are native to New York State and are the official state fish. Visitors are welcome to explore the hatchery year ‘round as it is open daily from 9:00am-3:30pm. For more information, visitors can call the hatchery at 716-358-4755. While visiting the hatchery, visitors will discover that it is also a site of historical and archaeological significance. On May 19, 1934, when the hatchery was being created, pond excavators discovered what appeared to be animal remains. As it turns out, these excavators stumbled upon the remains of a mammoth! While most mammoth excavations yield little more than some tooth and tusk fragments, the mammoth remains in Randolph include both tusks, which have a combined weight of approximately 150 pounds, and the skull, which weighs about 200 pounds. The remains date back about 12,000 years and have been identified as a Columbian Mammoth, not a woolly mammoth, which would have stood more than fourteen feet high. Because the mammoth was discovered on state lands, it is the property of New York State. This discovery was made on a Saturday, and by the following Wednesday, the mammoth remains were already on their way to Albany to be curated at the state museum to prevent further deterioration. To learn more about what is now the most complete mammoth specimen discovered in New York State, check out the newly installed informational signs at the hatchery during your visit!

SHOP SMALL BUSINESS If you’ve never visited Randolph, there’s no better time than Small Business Saturday on November 25. This holiday season, avoid the chaos of big-box stores and chains and #shoplocal for your gifts! On this particular Saturday, Randolph businesses will be offering great sales and specials to celebrate the national shopping day and kick off the holiday season.

In the excursion train car replica, you can enjoy two films - one of which is about the original trains from the 1880’s and the early 1900’s as they crossed the Kinzua Viaduct across the gorge. Here you will learn the story of how the Kinzua Viaduct, partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003, was re-invented as the Kinzua Sky Walk. On-site is the PA Wilds Gift Shop where you can shop for handcrafted, handmade items, local books and photography from the region. Admission is free to the center, the park and onto the skywalk. Located at the Kinzua Bridge State Park (296 Viaduct Road in Mt. Jewett, PA), the park is open daily from 8am to dusk; call ahead to check seasonal hours for the center: 814-778-5467.

Non-resident and resident registration can be found at www.pasnow.org. A downloadable trail map is available online, as are seasonal snow and trail conditions at www.visitANF.com. Snowmobile rentals are available at Myers Motorsports, 3176 Route 219, Kane, PA. You will want to call ahead to reserve your equipment and to check trail conditions. Phone 814-779-3745 for snowmobile rental information and pricing, or click on www.myersmotorsports.info. There are over 300 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the Forest.

By Air, Land or Kayak TRAIL CENTRAL

THE ALLEGHENY NATIONAL FOREST REGION OFFERS OUTDOOR ADVENTURES IN SPRING, SUMMER AND FALL TOO!

When traveling into the Allegheny National Forest in northwestern Pennsylvania, you will see the name Kinzua numerous times - they are not all at the same location, but are in fact miles apart. The name Kinzua is a Native American word, translated to mean “Fish on a Spear.” The reason so many sites are named Kinzua, but are in different locations, is because Kinzua Creek starts just past the Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, then flows past the village of Westline (home of the Kinzua Creek Trail), and then into the Kinzua Arm of the mighty Allegheny Reservoir where the waters are held back by the Kinzua Dam. This is an amazing area of forests, rivers, and fresh mountain streams, and a fun way to explore is by air, on foot, or in a kayak. VINTAGE BI-PLANE RIDES OVER THE FOREST: Views from the sky offer amazing landscapes as you soar above the forestlands of the Kinzua Gorge and the upper Alleghenies in an open-cockpit 1943 Boeing Stearman with experienced pilot Bruce Klein. This bi-plane ride is a safe and enjoyable - as well as memorable - experience. Take advantage of a bird’s eye view to see the picturesque beauty of the fields, forest, rivers and streams from above. One manmade architectural attraction best seen by air is the amazing Kinzua Sky Walk at the Kinzua Bridge State Park. Vintage Bi-Plane Rides leave from the Bradford Regional Airport, 212 Airport Drive in Lewis Run, PA. Traditionally the best fall foliage viewing is the last two weeks of September and the first two weeks of October. Individual rates, group rates and gift certificates are available. Call ahead to book your flight at 814-642-9486 or 814-558-5376. VIEW THE KINZUA GORGE FROM THE KINZUA SKY WALK: The Kinzua Sky Walk is “One of the top 10 most scenic skywalks in the world.” Stroll out 624 feet at a height of 225 feet for spectacular views of the Kinzua Gorge. At the end of the skywalk is a partial glass floor which allows for 360-degree views. This masterpiece of engineering and ingenuity is built on six of the original towers of the Kinzua Viaduct, which was once the highest and longest viaduct in the world. First constructed in 1882 and used for commerce and tourist excursions, the viaduct was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003. In the fall of 2011, the viaduct was reinvented as the Kinzua Sky Walk, 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, PA.

FROM LAND: SMETHPORT & BRADFORD WALKING TOURS: For those seeking amazing architecture, two walking tours - one in Smethport and one in Bradford - offer a time capsule view of America. The Smethport Mansion District Walking Tour highlights 32 mansions built during the late 1880’s. Many are prime examples of Victorian Architecture, and two - the Mansion District Inn and the Blackberry Inn - are now operated as bed & breakfasts. The Bradford National Historic District Walking Tour uncovers the fascinating past of this early boom town built by the first Oil Barons. Prime examples of Art Deco architecture from the 1920s include the Hooker-Fulton Building, the Zippo Manufacturing Office with its famous Zippo Neon Sign, and Marilyn Horne Hall - the site of the Marilyn Horne Museum and Exhibit Center. The Main Street Moviehouse, still operating today as a movie theater, opened in 1935 with Miss America attending the Grand Opening.

HIT THE TRAILS: Choose from more than 600 miles of trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ATV/UTV riding, hiking, biking and mountain biking. There’s plenty of room for you to find your own trail here on over 513,000 acres of free public access lands within the Allegheny National Forest. The newest trail is Jakes Rocks Mountain Biking Tail, a 30-40 mile system of trails designed by Trail Solutions, a world class trail company affiliated with IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association). This stacked loop mountain biking trail system appeals to riders of all skill levels. Jakes Rocks is located west of the Allegheny Reservoir; the village of Kane can serve as a great hub for riding, as bikers can travel from their room via PA Route 321 north to the Longhouse National Scenic Byway, then north on Forest Road - FR 262 to the trailhead. Distinctive hikes over and into the Kinzua Gorge are at the Kinzua Bridge State Park. The short Kinzua Creek Trail is a 0.4-mile linear trail down the side of the Kinzua Gorge; at the bottom, you can view the skywalk from below and have a closeup view of the massive fallen towers still laying where the tornado winds placed them. This trail is rated difficult. The Kinzua Valley Trail, not at the park, but between Westline and Red Bridge Campground on the Allegheny National Forest, is a 7-mile snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking, biking trail. The trail winds along picturesque Kinzua Creek. The surface of the trail is crushed limestone, and it is a family-friendly trail with easy access and slight grades, making it ideal for cross-country skiing in the winter. In the village of Westline, the Westline Inn offers delicious dining in a rustic atmosphere. It is perfectly acceptable to wear your outdoor gear in for a meal. Guest rooms with no frills, no electronics, but charming old-fashioned brass beds make this an excellent getaway for those seeking an escape into nature. The Marilla Trail System is an interconnected trail system of six separate trails of different difficulty levels. A local favorite is the Marilla Bridges Trail, which loops around the Marilla Reservoir. This 1-mile loop offers forest and water vistas. Highlights include a covered wooden bridge, three rustic wooden trestle bridges, and a delightful gazebo located at the southwestern corner of the trail. The trailhead is located along Route 346, five miles west of the City of Bradford. Fishing and kayaking are allowed. Other trails in the Marilla Trail System include the Marilla Rocks Trail - a 2.9-mile loop through forest and massive rock formations, the White Pine Trail - a 3-mile loop past towering old-growth forest, Marilla Springs Trail - a 3.6 mile point-to-point trail which is slightly more aggressive, and Bullis Hollow Trail - an 8.3-mile trail connecting Marilla Springs Trail to Tracy Ridge Campground in the Allegheny National Forest via sections of the North Country Trail. The newest trail, opened in 2017, is the Cornelius Connection at Gilbert Reservoir - a 2.4 linear trail which spans from Marilla to Gilbert Reservoir. This is a dirt path trail through mixed hardwood forest and is great for snowshoeing. It is un-groomed trail. Trailheads are located near both Reservoirs. From Bradford, take PA Route 346 west for five miles to reach trailhead parking. ON THE WATERS: The Marilla Reservoir and the Gilbert Reservoir both offer free public access for kayaking and canoeing, in-season ice-fishing opportunities, along with great fishing throughout the season. The scenery around both Reservoirs is deep forest. In Smethport, you will find Hamlin Lake located just a few blocks from Main Street. For those who love the water, the mighty Allegheny Reservoir is ripe with opportunity to see the Forest from yet another location - by boat, kayak, or canoe. Kinzua ADVentures offers boat tours on the Allegheny Reservoir, along with motorcycle and snowmobile tours. Call 814-331-1097 for information. Canoe and kayaks are available for rent at Willow Bay Recreational Area in the Allegheny National Forest. For pricing and reservations contact Allegheny Site Management at 814-368-4158. For floating along the river - the Allegheny River Trail begins near the headwaters of the Allegheny River near Port Allegany in Pennsylvania, with water access sites also in Portville and Olean, New York. Froggy Bottom Allegheny River Outfitters can outfit kayaking excursions which are family-friendly. For information please call 814-558-0842 or click over to froggybottomoutfitters.com. A free Allegheny National Forest Visitors Guide & Map is available by calling 800-473-9370. For downloadable maps, walking tour brochures, and driving tours, go to www.visitANF.com.

CYCLOCROSS

ANF REGION OF PA

Want to think and act local? Invest in the community’s people and businesses? Show your support at the 5th annual W.I.L.M.A. Expo (We Invite Local Manufacturers & Artisans) being held at the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds in Little Valley, NY the weekend of October 21-22, 2017.

HoliMont is hosting its second annual Cyclocross event this fall on Oct. 22. This is a race you don’t want to miss! The course will offer a mix of single track, grass, dirt and paved sections. Off-camber sections and mud are possible and even probable. There will be at least 2 dismount areas, one with barriers.

JAKE’S WITCH PROJECT October 6-7 Kinzua Beach Area & Jake’s Rocks Trails in the Allegheny National Forest The Jakes Witch Project is Northwestern PA’s Premiere Mountain Bike Festival. Enjoy 20 miles of multi-use trail systems, live music, food and drinks. Admission to the festival is FREE! The exhibits and vendors will open at noon on Friday. 814-688-8304 www.jakeswitchproject.com

What are you supporting? This expo will encourage people to buy from and promote local businesses by highlighting items that are handmade or manufactured in Cattaraugus County by local artisans and manufacturers - everything from wreaths to carved sculptures, to horseradish - all for your browsing and #shoplocal pleasure. It is a familyoriented event and will include fun activities for the little ones. Why should you buy local? Shopping local is more than just avoiding long lines and crammed parking lots at the mall (although this is an added perk!) Buying locally-made products supports business owners and families right in the community, while also creating jobs and encouraging local tourism. Additionally, shopping local reduces transportation costs and lessens the environmental impact of these businesses. Of course, shopping local at the W.I.L.M.A. event is just plain fun, as the variety of items and the personal, friendly service offered by local business owners create an entirely different experience than shopping in a big box store. W.I.L.M.A. is the perfect opportunity to shop for a distinctive gift for the upcoming holiday season, while keeping your money in the community. This event will be held rain or shine as it is indoors. Vendors will be available on Saturday from 10:00am-5:00pm and Sunday from 11:00am-3:00pm. FREE admission to shop! Come see the wooly bear caterpillars, enjoy some refreshments, and start your holiday shopping! To learn more or to become a vendor, visit www.enchantedmountains.com.

EMPTY BOWLS DINNER: HELP FIGHT HUNGER Cattaraugus Community Action will host its annual Empty Bowls dinner from 4:00pm to 6:00 pm on Thursday, October 19 at Cattaraugus Community Action’s Lighthouse Community Kitchen located at 25 Jefferson Street in Salamanca, NY. Created by the Imagine Render Group, Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. These simple dinners consist of various soups and are held across the United States; local area artists create bowls that are sold to the public to serve as a reminder of what their neighbors may be sitting down to nightly. For a $10 donation, patrons can purchase a ticket to the event. The ticket includes one of the locally created artisan bowls, and a simple dinner of soups and salad, prepared by the culinary arts students of Cattaraugus Community Action’s Food For Thought Program. According to the Imagine Render Group, one in every eight Americans struggles daily with food insecurity. The problem is also a local issue. Each year, Cattaraugus Community Action’s Lighthouse Community Soup Kitchen serves thousands of meals to children, adults, and senior citizens as well as distributing thousands of food boxes through the Food Pantry to those in need. All proceeds from the Empty Bowls Dinner will help support Cattaraugus Community Action’s Lighthouse Soup kitchen in their efforts to fight hunger in our community. Join others at the annual dinner or simply purchase a bowl. For more information, contact Sharon Turano, Volunteer Coordinator/Nutrition Assistant at 945-1041 ext. 149.

This is probably one of the best venues for a 360 degree view of the action. Bring your friends and family to cheer you on and heckle the competition. Hand-ups of all kinds are always welcome. Grab a place to stay and make a weekend of it. Register through BikeReg.com.

ARTS, CRAFTS AND ANTIQUE SHOW Portville Central School’s annual Arts, Crafts and Antique Show will be held Saturday, November 4-5 inside the high school, located at 500 Elm Street in Portville, NY. This two-day indoor show presents an exciting opportunity to kick off your holiday shopping season early, and raises funds for the school’s student achievement awards and scholarships. The event will feature art, antiques, crafts and food from over 100 vendors and will run from 10:00am-4:00pm both days. Vendors will be stationed in the high school gym, classrooms and halls throughout the high school building. Come join the thousands of shoppers and find that perfect one-of-a-kind gift for the art or antique lover on your holiday shopping list. After you’ve browsed all of the wonderful items available for sale, head to the concession stand and fill up on tasty homemade soups, Philly cheese steak sandwiches, sausages, burgers, dogs, French fries and more. Show your support for the area’s local artists and for our students! Admission is $3 adults and $2 for students and senior citizens. To learn more about this year’s event, go to www.portville.wnyric.org or call the school at 716-933-6005.

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK for breakfast • lunch • good company!

By Spencer Timkey In 1985, Jim Watson rolled the dice. He was spending the majority of his time running a restaurant, while the minority went into making candy for his family’s Kenmore chocolate shop. While skiing with friends at a somewhat-known ski resort in a somewhat-known town south of Buffalo, the light bulb clicked. Without the production or financial means to open another chocolate shop in a bustling strip mall or population center, Watson’s gamble 32 years ago paid off … Ellicottville’s Watson’s Chocolates has become a name stay. “It just so happened that a friend of mine who owned some buildings had a vacant storefront,” he said. “In the mid-80s, there were a lot of empty storefronts. Ellicottville hadn’t yet reached the level of popularity it enjoys today. And I thought to myself - it’s far enough from Kenmore, where if I fail, nobody will know! (laughs) But it didn’t fail, and here we are 32 years later.” The Watson family has been making chocolates and candy for over 70 years. The business, now in the hands of a 3rd generation (Jim’s daughter, Whitney, is the president), has capitalized on the success of its famous sponge candy to gain worldwide acclaim and attention. And with 135 products to choose from in their catalogue, you’ll be hard pressed to find something that you won’t like.

“When we opened the Ellicottville store, we had a single worker who would dip our chocolates,” Jim said. “And when I told her I wanted to open a second location, her initial reaction was, “Are you crazy?” But we went for it, and our first Fall Festival was a massive success. But when everyone went home on Sunday night, the following week went pretty slowly. So we shut down and reopened on Thanksgiving, closing again on Easter. That process repeated itself for a few more years, until we had a girl working for us that we didn’t want to lay off. After that, we stayed open all year.” In the late 1980s when Ellicottville started gaining traction as a robust ski town, Watson bought a condo at the newly-built Wildflower complex. Watson would work in the restaurant during the day, help with production at night, then a few times a week would load up the car and bring the goods to Ellicottville. “When town really started to pop - I love telling people this - they would say, ‘Jim, how did you know Ellicottville would be such a bustling place? What a brilliant move!’ And I would reply that I’m no genius; I was just in the right place at the right time.” When the subject of sponge candy was brought up, Watson was quick to point out that despite what anybody says, Watson’s is not the inventor or originator of the famed candy. His dad learned it from a Buffalo candy maker, and Jim, in turn, learned it from his dad. “Nobody knows the origins - it’s one of those things that shrouded in history,” he said. “But we’ve got our formula where the ingredients are exactly the same as they were 70 years ago, and we’ve got our process that’s exactly the same as it was 70 years ago. We have never equivocated the quality with the margins, meaning we will not sacrifice the ingredients to make a few extra bucks.” While Watson’s may not be the original creator of sponge candy, they are the ones who have perfected it. So much as to where three years ago, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown labeled September 21 as Sponge Candy Day. Featured on national networks like The Food Channel for sponge candy, people from all over the world call and order it. As a company, Watson’s has evolved to enable those same people to order directly from their website (as well as all of their other fine products.) Polly Perez, Watson’s Marketing Director, said that aspect has been huge. “Whether they’re Buffalo expats, or someone who’s strolled through Ellicottville, or someone who saw something on TV, giving that person the ability to order our products is very important, because it allows us to reach demographics we may not necessarily be able to otherwise. And we recently committed to buying strictly Fair Trade Cocoa, which helps us contribute to fair working conditions around the world.” “Even though our Ellicottville store is firmly established, the next generation of Watsons has taken a hold of it to ensure that the quality and service don’t change from what people have come to expect,” Watson said. “We are committed to the next 32 years as we have in the past.” Watson’s Chocolates, located at 27 Washington Street in Ellicottville, is open daily. Stop by and grab a box of sponge candy, chocolate, fudge, or any of the other tasty treats they offer, or shop online at www.watsonschocolates.com.

Interview with: SPENCER TIMKEY Director of Stoke

Interview with: TREY CLAUSS Mr. Man

Samantha Timkey-Armstrong GM of High 5s

Ok we’ve gotta start with the BIG one .. Burton Step-ons? Indulge … This is a biggie. When we were having dinner with our Burton Rep last year (shoutout Joe Grasso), he hinted that something big was coming down the pipeline. After some prodding (and some beers), Grasso told us that Burton was going to reintroduce a step in binding to snowboarding - Step On. The system, which is obviously far superior and more technical than the step in bindings we seemingly all rode in the late-90s, uses contact points at your heel and both sides of your toes. And this season, Burton blessed The Boardroom by naming us one of their select Full Service Dealers - meaning that we’re one of a few shops on the East Coast that has access to Step On. They’re making it for men and women, and it will be available for sale at the beginning of November. We’re going to have a few demo pair, and we’re encouraging the doubters to ride it before they make any rash assumptions. Step On is the next evolution in snowboarding, and The Boardroom is incredibly stoked to be able to offer it. What are some of the other hardgoods that you’re excited about bringing in this season? Shapes! So many shapes. Snowboarding has been trending in this direction for a few seasons, and we’re really excited to have a multitude of shaped rides for our customers to choose from. We’ve got the entire Family Tree line from Burton, some asymmetric shapes from Lib Tech and GNU, the Sick Stick and Man’s Board from Salomon, and the Insta/Gator from Never Summer. You’re going to ask about these boards - they are weird looking - but they are super cool. Not to mention, we’ll have the full contingent of regular shapes for your ripping pleasure. Same question, softgoods … We’re a big proponent of layering properly. As in, don’t wear cotton next to your skin because you’ll be cold and miserable. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer from Under Armour or Burton, then follow with a riding flannel from 686. With the uber-cold winter we’re going to have, you’re going to want to make sure everything is covered up. Airhole makes a facemask with a built-in breathing hole to avoid dampness, and Anon’s Magna Tech uses magnets to attach the facemask seamlessly to the bottom of the goggle. You put a heavy emphasis on junior gear, including seasonal snowboard rentals … We’ve seen the cycle trend up in snowboarding, then down, and we’re really starting to see it trend back up in terms of participation and who we’re getting on the hill. Our ‘tweener’ category has been monstrous the last couple of seasons, as well as the Uber Junior (110 centimeter snowboards, size 11 feet, really cute). The goal is to try and get as many kids on the hill as possible in good gear so they have a good experience and keep coming back. Our seasonal snowboard rental consists of brands like Burton, Salomon and Lib Tech - three of our powerhouse retail brands, so you know the stuff your kiddo is on will be the best in the industry. You said you’re the go-to spot for helmets and goggles ... Options. Styles, pricing, colorways, brands … that’s how we try to set ourselves apart. Our helmet brand anchors, Giro and Smith, are now offering MIPS (Multi Directional Impact Protection System) which is an added safety feature. And goggles? We’ve got the solid pricepoint covered all the way up to the high-end from Anon and Oakley. Need a quick change lens tech for day/night riding? Or something for over your glasses? We’ve got you covered. There’s a new event at Holiday Valley this year called “Boardroom Banked”. What is it? The Boardroom Banked is an event that we’ve wanted to do for a while. On March 4, we’re going to take over Holiday Valley’s Independence run for a day of banked turns and a celebration of snowboarding. The party will be on the Champagne Sundeck (at Yodeler), we’ll have our reps on-hand, we’ve got giveaways, and it’s going to be a rad day. There are four divisions: Ladies, Groms, Men’s and OG (for all of you over 35 who want to show that you can still run with the young guns.) We don’t have this locked in yet, but we’re hoping to have a pre-party/ registration at The Depot the Saturday night beforehand. Registration will be available soon, and proceeds are going to go to a cause that is yet to be decided on. If you want more info, just pop in and see us until we get some things pumping out on our social channels.

Interview with: CIARA PETERS Soft Goods Manager Curtis Boza, Hard Goods Manager

Interview with: KIMBERLY READING Shop Owner Greg Dekdebrun, Owner

You just finished up year #2 of being open during the summer. How did it compare to your first year? Can you give us a glimpse of some of the product you carried? It went well! Everything went smoothly - it’s great to see familiar faces all year long. We continued to carry a large offering of O’Neill clothing and bathing suits for the whole family as well as some samplings from Picture Organic Clothing. New this summer for us was Mountain Khakis - a lifestyle brand we loved so much that we are carrying their fall/ winter line as well. Word has it, you have a new hardgoods manager in the shop … After over a decade of Jay running the snowboard shop and being our hardgoods manager, he has stepped down to a part-time position here in response to accepting a full-time yearround position. You now can stop in and see the familiar face of Curtis Boza; he has been with us for four years and will now stepping up to run the snowboard shop and be Greg’s right hand man. A snowboarder since age 8 and a skier since age 3 - we think he’s a great fit! What’s new in the shop for this coming winter? (which, by the way, will be Dekdebruns’ 55th year in business ... whoah!) 55 years, I know, right?! SunIce is not a new brand in any capacity for us, be we are so excited for their offerings this year! Also, for the first time in years we will once again have Bogner in store. For the skiers: Apex ski boots (if you haven’t heard of these, check them out!) has completely revamped their line-up by having all the chassis upgraded to the XP model from last year. As for the snowboarders - they should be super pumped - Nidecker is back in the States! Also, we’re bringing back Parajumper - a lifestyle brand that will keep you looking and feeling good! What are a few accessories that you would recommend every skier add to their gear bag? Helmets!!! (Safety first.) We carry Giro, Smith, Marker and Uvex helmets. Each brand has their own unique features, but they are all equally SAFE! A large portion of our helmets now offer MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) which allows the helmet to rotate around your head to help your brain twist less. We also love all things merino wool - socks, layering pieces, neck-gators and balaclavas. Merino wool specifically is NOT itchy and keeps you comfortable. There is nothing better on a cold day than merino wool - catch me wearing it at work on a regular basis! Along with snowsports equipment and clothing, you also carry an array of EVL-branded merchandise. Can you give us a glimpse of some of these items you’ve got stocked on shelves? We offer a full line-up of Ellicottville t-shirts, (short and long sleeve) sweatshirts, crew necks and hats, as well as shot glasses, coffee mugs and pint glasses. New this year is a full array of fun EVL stickers. Can you hit on some of the services you guys are known for? We are most well-known for our amazing bootfitting, but also for our ski and board tuneups … let’s not forget our rentals - both daily and seasonal. Something a lot of people don’t realize is we actually make custom footbeds; they are obviously great in ski/snowboard boots, but they are also perfect to put in shoes that you spend a lot of time in. If you ask any of our staff, there is a good chance most of us have footbeds in our shoes! The Dekdebruns crew really prides themselves on customer service - we all love sharing our knowledge of products and passion for the sports. How is retirement going for Greg? Has he been able to stay away? Can we expect to see him around this winter? Oh Greg … I don’t think he quite knows how to retire! He will be in the store full-time this season. As the business is for sale, he will be holding down the fort until he can find a buyer that wants to keep his vision alive.

Let us in on your top product picks for this season … This season’s top performers include some of our favorites like Nordica, Head, Volkl and Rossignol. Whether you have an appetite for floaty powder skis, all mountain performers, gutsy sidecuts for groomer days or blazing fast race equipment, these ski companies have made the grade. Our “go-anywhere” recommendations would be the Head Supershape i.Rally, the Nordica Enforcer 93, the Rossignol Experience 88 and the Head Core 93 … all offer a blend of gofast stability, all mountain versatility and can handle anything at your favorite resort. In addition, we have added Stockli and Black Crows to the mix. Look for the Stockli Stormrider 88 for men and women which SKI Magazine referred to as being “strong and smooth and likes to run.” Our helmet and goggle collection is bigger than ever! We have dedicated the entire front corner of our store to this category. We have a huge selection of helmets from Giro, Smith, Oakley, Bern and POC, and goggles from Smith, Giro, Oakley and POC. This year’s favorite helmets include the Smith Quantum with MIPS, the Giro Vue and POC Receptor Backcountry. These helmets look slick and feel great, all while offering state-of-the-art protection and smart features. For seamless goggle compatibility we suggest the Oakley Flight Deck XM, the Smith I/0 or the Giro Contact. All feature color boosting lens technology, anti-fog treatments and interchangeable lense options. Upgrading your old pair of goggles for a new pair will make everything you see look just as good as it did when you upgraded your television from standard to high definition. Demos, seasonal equipment leasing, America’s Best Bootfitters ... details please. It can be challenging to choose the right equipment that suits your level and style preference. We demo almost all of the high-end skis on our wall and usually in more than one size. With a greater variety to choose from, the better the chance our customers will find the proper ski. We also offer daily ski and snowboard rentals. Last season we added the “performance rental” to our fleet which gives customers the opportunity to upgrade to an all-mountain ski designed for hardpack, groomers and bumps. Our season-long leasing program is very popular. It’s an affordable way to outfit kids who are new to skiing and snowboarding and for kids who are growing like weeds. We offer both new and used ski and snowboard equipment starting at $99. Mud, Sweat n’ Gears has become a destination for people who want specialized bootfitting services. Five members of our staff recently attended Masterfit University in Mount Snow for two days of intensive hands on practice and advanced training for experienced bootfitters. These guys are certified to specialize in custom bootfitting, boot modification, stance balancing and alignment engineering. You’ve got some pretty intense machines running in the back of the shop. No doubt you’re one of the top “go-to” places for tuning. What exactly do you have going on back there? The MSG “Speed Factory” is home to the most innovative tuning machinery from Montana of Switzerland. Whether you need a basic wax, base repair or a specialized race tune, we can help. In order to compliment the existing machinery, we added a tool called the “Wax Future”, which uses an infrared heat source to heat the base of the ski. This provides better and deeper wax penetration into the base for longer and better gliding on the snow. If you find yourself frustrated by catching edges, have no bite on hard snow, see damage on your base or you neglected your equipment over the summer, it’s time for a proper tune-up at the Speed Factory. We can always count on MSG to bring in a fresh selection of lifestyle wear each year. What do you have hanging on the racks this fall / winter? This year we added new findings from Mountain Hardware, Kari Traa, 686, Holden and Newland with functional pieces you’ll reach for on and off the slopes. Lots of sweaters, cashmere wraps, casual jackets, shirts and tops, dresses, skirts, tights, hats, scarves, etc. Burton is a perennial staff favorite with a huge selection of insulators, fleece and flannels. We’re crazy for anything from Fjallraven, but one piece in particular is the Luhkka Cape for women. This smart, knee length cape is cute as pie and can be worn on its own during the fall and spring and as a reinforcement garment on a cold winter day. And once again, we’re excited to have an even bigger selection of Alp n’ Rock this season, including the signature Ellicottville branded crew neck.

RECORDING LIGHT

GALLERY 14731 SHOWCASES CAPTIVATING LANDSCAPES BY LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHERS By Dash Hegeman At its root, photography is the art of recording light. Anyone who has ever been to Ellicottville, NY knows that whether it’s the sun setting through the gold and red colors of the maple leaves in the fall, the glisten of the sun on snow on a bluebird day, or the luminosity of a summer sunrise, Western New York is an incredible location to take inspiring and captivating photographs. Photography lovers planning to visit Ellicottville are in luck! Gallery 14731, Ellicottville’s premiere contemporary gallery space and gift shop, is currently showcasing works by some fantastic photographers. Gallery 14731 is quickly becoming Ellicottville’s go-to hub for finding talented local artists and its emphasis on consistently changing up the space and showcasing different mediums allows art enthusiasts to see something new on a regular basis.

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

ECLECTICALLY DIVERSE

DAN ALDRICH

ANN PARKER

“HOLIDAY VALLEY SUNRISE” One current featured artist is Holiday Valley’s own Dan Aldrich, who in the past year obtained his FAA Drone Certification with the intent of showcasing the beautiful landscape of Ellicottville from a different angle. Aldrich has been a fixture on the Holiday Valley Snowmaking crew for over twenty years now, and as a result of being up on the mountain before anyone else, has been able to provide the resort with some stunning early morning photos that have been used on its social channels. “I thought that the aerial shots during the morning would look great,” Aldrich stated. “So I purchased a drone. And so began a new found passion.” Naturally, Aldrich says that Holiday Valley is his favorite place to take his landscape photos. It’s the place he knows the best and one that allows him to show people a different perspective of a location they know and love. “My ideal and favorite photos consist of snowmaking in progress along with some sublimation and a beautiful sunrise,” Aldrich said. “Every now and then I like to show the occasional groomer or sled in the photo. These make up my favorite pieces and are the ones on display in the gallery.” While he doesn’t currently have a website showcasing his work (one is in the works so people will soon be able to purchase prints online), Dan’s talents have allowed him to work with HKD, which is Holiday Valley’s automated snowgun supplier, to shoot the automation process, which the Valley has used for marketing purposes. Adventure Bound/SUP On The Fly has also used Aldrich’s skills to help showcase their inflatable paddleboards at Spruce Lake. While Aldrich loves taking his aerial photos, please keep in mind that people are not just allowed to go and fly at Holiday Valley. Dan is able to do what he does because of a lot of hard work and detailed planning. FAA Drone Certification is no easy process and once he passed that test, he still had to work with Holiday Valley for permission to fly in its airspace, which requires a detailed flight plan for each flight that includes a take-off and landing route. He is also required to carry drone flight insurance. Aldrich is happy to jump through the necessary hoops because according to him, “it’s worth the great photos.”

“TRANSFIGURATIONS” Ann Parker was hooked on capturing light the second she walked into her high school Photography 1 class in 1977. Something about the process of shooting with a 35 mm camera and working to bring the photographs to life in the dark room spoke to Parker and put her on a path towards a creative career that allows for self-expression and continued personal growth. Some of that self-expression can be seen in her newest project, “Transfigurations”, which according to Parker, “entails using elements from nature and manmade objects to produce an abstract photograph. The photos are multi-layered with a flower petal and leaves, beams and whorls of light, waves and ripples of water. The final product is multi-dimensional with blocks of color which gives the pieces energy and movement. Staying true to her roots is important to Parker and it translates in her photography. “In addition to new lenses on my cameras, I like to photograph scenes using vintage lenses manufactured from the 1960’s through the 1980’s,” Parker stated. “A whole different world is opened up using the vintage lenses. Everything is done manually; focus, f-stop, shutter speed. Some of the images are almost dream-like in quality.” Parker had done a showing at Gallery 14731 when it originally opened, and when she was asked to show again, she jumped at the chance because she liked the local setting in a resort town that gets a lot of out of town traffic. The recent show allowed her to display one of her perennial favorites, “Metamorphosis.” According to Parker, “It has been shown in many juried exhibits, and is currently on tour with the Royal Photographic Society in the UK. I shot it through a window, as water droplets were forming into ice crystals on a frigid day in January a few years ago. Talk about being at the right place at the right time!” Looking towards the future, Parker is very excited about an upcoming show at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens in March 2018. The series is called “Florescence” and focuses on garden flowers, leaves and wildflowers. Using her collection of vintage lenses, Parker will produce a final product that resembles watercolors. You can find examples of Parker’s art at annparker.crevado.com or go and visit Gallery 14731 now and see it for yourself in person.

Ann Parker and Dan Aldrich are just two of the many talented artists that are currently being showcased inside Gallery 14731. Stop by the gallery to see the full lineup, including photographers Jonathan Kaye and Jim Moor.

SILVER FOX STEAKHOUSE

WATSON’S CHOCOLATES

Dubbed Ellicottville’s original steakhouse, the Silver Fox has held a long-standing reputation as one of the most comfortable and elegant restaurants in the village. Nightly chef specials, some of the best cuts of meat around, paired with an extensive wine list make this a top choice for those in search of a finer dining experience. The Silver Fox is also known for its famous Martini Club, which takes place every Friday evening at 5pm - traditional and signature martinis paired with complimentary appetizers for the bar crowd to enjoy. SNOWED-IN MENU PICKS: We’d be kidding ourselves if we left off sampling one of their martinis (if you’re of age of course), which are the perfect night-cap to a day on the slopes. We’re also big fans of their steak specials; give the Love Me Tender Love Me Blue a try the next time you dine at The Fox - two 4 oz. filets with demi-glace and chef mashed Maytag bleu cheese ... mmmm!

For over 30 years, Watson’s Chocolates has called Ellicottville home. Right in the heart of downtown, Watson’s is known for its famous Sponge Candy along with hundreds of other delicious confections, all made with Fair Trade Certified Cocoa. Stop by and try something sweet form the case, enjoy an ice cream cone, or grab a few gifts for the special people back home. SNOWED-IN MENU PICKS: Sponge Candy! It’s an art and a science - that’s how owner Jim Watson describes the process of making their famous Sponge Candy. Made by hand in small batches, each sponge is carefully cooked in Watson’s traditional copper kettles by their highly trained candy makers. These crispy, tender chunks of caramelized spun sugar are then drenched in Watson’s wonderfully creamy chocolate. Bonus: it’s gluten free! Sponge Candy is no doubt Watson’s best seller. In fact, they produce approximately 35 tons of it annually!

WINERY OF ELLICOTTVILLE

KATY’S CAFE

Owner Dominic Spicola’s father, Francesco, taught him that making excellent wine requires great care and attention. Making the right adjustments at the right time are crucial to achieving optimal quality. Dominic and his son-in-law, Sam Sheehy, have honed their skills for years, and couldn’t be prouder of the lineup of premium quality wines that the Winery of Ellicottville is offering today. Never mind the pile of medals that their wines have won in competition. Let your tastebuds be the judge. Wine tastings available daily. SNOWED-IN MENU PICKS: Snow Fox: this extra sweet, crisp white wine made with Niagara grapes showcases a touch of fruitiness. The Sparkling Riesling: its semi-sweet bubbles will give your spirit an extra lift, while the smooth finish will satisfy the palate. (Buy a bottle individually, or opt for the gift pack, which comes with two champagne flutes.) More of a red wine drinker? Go for the Marquette: a dry, medium bodied wine accented with hints of cranberry & vanilla cream.

Undoubtedly one of the most popular gathering places of locals and visitors alike is Katy’s Cafe, a charming spot now located in the Washington Square Plaza, serving up specialty coffees, teas and delicious breakfast and lunch options. SNOWED-IN MENU PICKS: Fill up on the L.A. Cinnamon French Toast topped with fresh strawberries. Or go for Katy’s Angry Burrito - two fried eggs, homefries, sausage, onions, tomato, smoked jalapeno relish, cheddar, chipotle aioli in a grilled cheddar jalapeno wrap. (Trust us when we say, you’ll be extremely full ... and happy, not angry.) If lunch is more your speed, may we suggest the Tannenbomb grilled chicken, bacon, sauteed onions, gorgonzola and roasted garlic aiolo on grilled Italian Panini bread. Head out to Great Valley (just down the road from EVL) and get a taste of Katy’s 2nd location - Katy’s Fly-In! Or if you prefer to travel by air, land your wings on the airstrip across the road). The Fly-In serves breakfast, lunch AND dinner (beer and wine too!)

DOM’S BUTCHER BLOCK

MONROE ST. BRICK & BREW

Dom’s Butcher Block, located in the Washington Square complex behind Katy’s Cafe, is your #1 place to find fresh cut meat, processed in-house daily. Take your pick from the cases, or put in your request for custom cuts. The on-site smoker ensures that family owners Ken, Annette & Tyler Auteri “only smoke the best” … meat, that is. All of their smoked meats are made using time tested, old-fashioned techniques right on the premises. You’ll also find fresh homemade sausage (hot, mild and maple flavored), free range chicken, and a full line of D’Avolio olive oils, vinegars and gourmet pastas and sauces. SNOWED-IN MENU PICKS: Pair your pasta with 100% all natural Marinara Sauce by Osteria 166, now available at Dom’s Butcher Block. We also recommend you stock up on Dom’s homemade beef sticks and beef jerky - perfect for stashing in your pocket to take up on the hill each weekend you come out skiing.

Their philosophy is simple: create the best pizza team to give you the best PIE experience! Each hand-tossed pizza is served with the freshest ingredients and cooked around 1,000 degrees, then delivered to your table for pure pleasure. SNOWED-IN MENU PICKS: One of their more popular pies is the Pesto Tomato Pizza with basil pesto sauce, shredded mozzarella blend, romano tomato and fresh spinach. Or try their newest creation, “THE DOM” - MSB&B has teamed up with Dom’s Butcher Block to offer a Philly Cheesesteak Pizza, featuring Dom’s hand-cut, hand-picked, freshly marinated steak combined with MSB&B’s daily prepared veggies, white sauce and mozzarella. Throw an order of Monroe St.’s signature breadsticks in and wash it all down with a pint of Four Mile Brewing’s Allegheny IPA - loaded with citrus-packed hops and a nice malt background, served on tap.

ASHFORD JUNCTION DINER

BIKE & BEAN

Take a short drive four miles east of the village and you’ll find yourself at the Ashford Junction Diner, where Peggy and Jay serve up breakfast and lunch Wednesday through Sunday from 7:00am-2:00pm. Under new ownership since last ski season, the couple is anxious to get year #2 under their belt, and have since already developed a fantastic menu and many great friendships. SNOWED-IN MENU PICKS: Two of their most popular breakfast items: The Breakfast Burger and The LaCroixssant! Stop in and try either for yourself. Your tastebuds will thank you! Once you’ve finished up your meal, swing over next door and check Laura McLeod’s Ellicottville Country Store, featuring multiple dealer booths displaying quality antiques from the last 150 years. You’ll also find bulk foods, kitchenware, soaps, candles, toys, jewelry, chocolates, fudge, jam, old fashioned penny candy, local maple syrup and honey, cheese, tea and more!

Ride on over to Bike & Bean, where not only can you get your two wheels tuned after tackling the local trails, you can also get down with a variety of freshly made organic burritos, smoothies, and other random creations of the moment. All of their ingredients are locally sourced, just another one of the cool things B&B is doing to make sure you’re getting the best burrito for your buck. SNOWED-IN MENU PICKS: It goes without saying, you need to try a burrito - simply choose your size tortilla (flour and gluten free tortillas available), chicken, steak or veggie options, and a variety of other fresh fixings - beans, rice, salsa and B&B’s staple guacamole made in-house. Looking for some clean, tasty energy? Let Dennis and crew whip up a fresh, delicious smoothie for you, chock full of flavor and hand-picked local fruit. Clean fuel + exercise = happy people ... which you’ll find at Bike & Bean.

MADIGAN’S

MYERS STEAKHOUSE & INN

Madigan’s has long been a staple as one of the most popular hot spots in the village. Whether it’s late night drinks and dancing, or a mid-afternoon break on their back patio, this bar can crank the tunes and serve up some creative concoctions. Charismatic bartenders, a pool table on both levels, and daily specials from the kitchen await your visit. Serving lunch Tuesday-Saturday from 11:00am-2:00pm; dinner Friday and Saturday until 9:00pm. SNOWED-IN MENU PICKS: Get out the wet naps for Madigan’s famous wings smothered in Grace’s even more famous house sauce. Other great options: local favorite pretzel chicken with honey mustard cream seauce, Madigan’s Guinness-infused mac and cheese, or Jay’s steak au poivre over a bed of shoestring Parm fries (winner of the Taste of Ellicottville). Madigan’s is also known for their hearty soups. A long-time favorite: Southwest chicken corn chowder ... delish!

Bring your tastebuds to the party with Myers’ fabulous steaks, fresh seafood, comfort food choices and fresh salads. Myers is a truly unique and historical location just minutes south of Ellicottville. The current owners are only the 4th to carry the tradition of good food in a cozy lodge atmosphere that has been a part of the Salamanca area for 120+ years. SNOWED-IN MENU PICKS: Their steaks are coated with the chef’s signature rub and fire-grilled to order … would you believe us if we told you that no steak sauce is required? It’s true! And if you’re trying to take the healthy route, there’s never been a better excuse to “have your steak (I mean salad) and eat it too” … Myers Famous Steakhouse Salad plates fresh romaine and iceberg with tomatoes, cucumbers and onion, then topped with a 6 oz. steak, shredded Parmesan and homemade buttermilk onion rings … Heaven!
