By Louisa Benatovich There’s nothing quite like a golfing green on a summer’s day. The soft grass stands immobile in still, windless air. The birds chirp, golf carts roll mechanically, and nine irons stir up angular clods of dirt. Every so often, the satisfying sound of a white thermoplastic orb falling comfortably into its cup echoes along the Holiday Valley Double Black Diamond Golf Course. As the hills rise around an immaculately groomed 18 holes, it is hard to imagine anything less perfect. This June, the Ellicottville Police Officers Association (EPOA) is hosting an idyllic Golf Outing for amateurs and professionals alike. Their second one to date, the event promises to be even better than its predecessor. The EPOA, a non-profit organization, purchases equipment and supplies for our local men-in-blue. To that end, they also strive to provide Criminal Justice Scholarships for aspiring officers at our local school. Proceeds from the Golf Outing go towards this worthy organization, whose goal is the betterment of the entire community. The event promises a wide variety of golf-themed fun. A four-person scramble and a 1pm shotgun grace the agenda, as well as a must-attend Chinese Auction. The $100 entrance fee covers your greens fee, golf cart, dinner, and auction entry. This year’s auction boasts lots of local deals, including gift cards to many of Ellicottville’s wonderful establishments, goodie baskets, and other surprises. Last year, the auction featured a rustic bar with its own Kegerator (refrigerated beer dispenser).

Black Diamonds aren’t just a winter thing
With ski season behind us and the green carpet rolled out, the Double Black Diamond Golf Course at Holiday Valley is in full swing DRIVING RANGE DOUBLE BLACK DIAMOND GOLF COURSE Nestled in the heart of Holiday Valley, the Double Black Diamond Golf Course tests all aspects of your game. Playing 6,493 yards from the tips (Par 70), it features stunning Par 3s, a ravine on #11 and the signature #13 with elevated tee boxes and views of the entire valley. There are plenty of opportunities to get in trouble trees, fairway bunkers and water make par anything but easy. While the Front 9 is relatively flat, the Back swiftly changes elevation, and club choice can become tricky (especially on the #15 ... 5 iron or 7?) But as daunting as the course may seem, grab some friends and cold ones from the oncourse beverage cart - you’ll have the best round of the summer!
HOLIDAY VALLEY GOLF SHOP The Golf Shop, located where the wintertime Mountain Shop is, has a full selection of clubs, bags, clothing and accessories. So don’t sweat it if you show up to your round having forgotten something. Golf’s best brands - Titleist, Callaway, Nike, Ping, FootJoy and others - can be found in the Golf Shop, as well as club rentals and a USGA computer to input your score/find your handicap.
GOLF AND LODGING PACKAGES Make a trip out of your golf! The Valley offers a myriad of lodging packages specific to golfers. Options include staying at The Inn or Tamarack (both with views of the course), and packages can be tailored to include additional rounds, dinner, lunch, or tickets to Sky High Adventure Park. Guests receive complimentary entry to the pool, club cleaning/storage and breakfast.
Holiday Valley’s practice facility, located across the street from the resort, boasts over 50 covered and grass hitting stations, a chipping green and a putting green. Dial your distance in with flags at 100, 150, 200 and 250 yards (and brag to your friends about labeling the tree that’s way out). Reloadable key fobs are available at the Golf Shop, or buy tokens on-site. The range is also home to the Mel Sole Golf School and lessons from any of HV’s PGA Professionals.
GOLF LESSONS Holiday Valley is home to PGA Professional Steve Carney, Class A PGA Member Kyle Benish and USGTF Instructor Tom Dirito. They offer group and private lessons, including junior and ladies. There are 8 junior clinics throughout July and August, and clubs/balls are provided! Beginner Ladies Group lessons are also available every week throughout the season. With Steve, you can do a playing lesson, while Kyle will use the V1 video software to break down and analyze your swing.
BOOK YOUR GROUP OUTING Get a group of friends or coworkers together for a 9- or 18-hole golf outing at HV! If group pricing isn’t incentive enough, the Valley will do anything from provide lunch or dinner for the group to personalized scorecards. Other options available include contests like longest drive or closest to the pin, parties at Cabana, beverage cart on-course and more to provide an awesome golf-centric experience.

Whether you’re finishing a round of golf, hanging poolside or just want to sit outside, the Cabana Bar makes summertime living easy. Located between the Main Lodge and Tamarack (adjacent to the pool), the Cabana is a fully-stocked bar with food and beverage service from John Harvard’s Brew House. Bartenders concoct summer drink specials daily, and a smoothie/daiquiri machine keeps the kids (and parents, depending on the pour) happy.

The pools at Holiday Valley, located next to the Cabana Bar, are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There’s a kiddie, adult and main pool, with the latter featuring a diving board and slide. Don’t forget about the yard games - cornhole, giant Jenga and more.

Strap on a harness, get your safety briefing and head into the trees ... either 10-15 feet off the ground (yellow courses) or way up near the top of the treeline (blues and blacks). Test your athleticism on the double black diamond Commando Course, or take a zipline across Punch Bowl on Black Storm. After you complete the zipline course back to the bottom, take a breather before hitting the 3D climbing forest. One of only a few of these parks in the entire country, the climbing forest uses the same handholds you find on a rock climbing wall, just attached to the trees. MOUNTAIN COASTER: Fly through the trees on the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster! A combination of an alpine slide and a roller coaster, sleds can carry one or two people. Ride the brakes through the loops or keep them pushed forward to get your adrenaline pumping. Mountain Coaster tickets are available in the Sky High harness shop, where you can buy single or multiple runs.

The race loop (around 4 to 5 miles) takes you to the top of Cindy’s ski slope, then back down singletrack or the easier cross country trails. The Senear Valley Trail (flow trail) starts at the top of Spruce Lake and then takes you back to the Training Center. When mountain biking at HV please be aware that Sky High is off limits and always be cognizant of on-hill operations.

Yes, you’ll get muddy, yes there is running, yes there are up to 14 obstacles but NO fire, NO barbed wire and NO electric shocks! The 3.5 mile course starts at the top of the mountain at Spruce Lake and runs along the ridgeline then down the hill over 11 obstacles. The 5.4 mile course with 14 obstacles adds quite a bit of uphill running, just in case you’re feeling especially tough. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Jim Kelly’s Hunter’s Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to giving hope through education and awareness, research, and family care for Krabbe, Leukodystrophies, and Newborn Screening.
Join the excitement Independence Day Weekend, when the first fairway of Holiday Valley’s golf course becomes one of the best outdoor concert venues in the region. Tucked away in the foothills of Cattaraugus County, noisy roads won’t affect your backswing. No nearby airport will distract you from your birdie putt. The hustle and bustle of everyday society that plagues so many courses is a non-factor here; in fact, the only time your golf zen might be interrupted is by the klop-klop-klop of a passing Amish buggy. Cardinal Hills Golf Course is off the beaten path, and that’s just the way they like it. Don’t confuse rural with low quality. While you’re surrounded by fields, the 18-hole, par 72 course - and scenery - create an atmosphere conducive to golfing. Finding your moment of zen remains the easiest task. Founded in 1927, Cardinal Hills has changed ownership multiple times. Throughout its existence, however, it’s remained a constant for golfers in the Randolph area. Current course manager Eric Brown, now in the 10th year of his tenure, has helped build the course’s reputation through junior programs, tournaments and sterling course upkeep. The most recent addition, a 3,200 square foot event center finished last summer, adds an entirely new dynamic to the course. “Our current clubhouse, built in the 1960s, wasn’t working well for big tournament groups,” Brown said, referencing the multiple times Cardinal Hills hosts full fields of 144 golfers. “We were just running out of room. The addition of the event center allows us to comfortably host that many people.” The event center brings in weddings, class reunions, baby showers and birthday parties. For the larger tournaments, it hosts not only the golfers, but those who come afterwards. A fully-stocked bar and tent rentals allow for the party to be extended past the structure, and the sunset views remain some of the best in the area. “The bigger tournaments, like Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye and Strike Out Leukemia, are full fields. So you’ve got all of the golfers, plus the folks that come afterwards for the party and raffles. It’s been a really great addition to the overall offerings of the course.” To make room for the new structure, Brown and his crew had to rework some of the holes. No. 9, which used to be long, transformed into a short par 3. And No. 2, which was already a long par 5, became even longer (490 yards, No. 1 in difficulty). That’s the signature hole. “We put a new green in. It’s pretty long and pretty difficult,” he said. “But the views are really great, and you can see the entire hillside south of the course.” Growing the game should be high on the list of any local golf course. To ensure the sport remains, having a fun, engaging youth program not only teaches kids the game, but provides an atmosphere where they’ll want to keep coming back. “We have a tremendous junior program that runs every Tuesday in July,” Brown said. “Every year, we have at least 40-50 kids come.” Cardinal Hills, one of WNY’s golf gems, is an awesome and affordable option for any golfer. One of the most prominent charitable golf outings in the area returns to The Pennhills Club on Saturday, June 1st. The Zippo Open: Sarah Dorn Blaisdell Memorial raises money for the McKean County SPCA, combining a rich history with generous donations and sponsorships. Started in 1963, the memorial continues to prove successful in the Bradford golf circuit. The figure that stands out the most: $284,047.28. That’s the amount of money raised and donated to the SPCA since 2000, a staggering sum when you realize that the memorial only hosts 80 players. It’s a testament to the community and the memorial’s founding members. In 1963, the late Zippo owner and founder George Blaisdell started the Zippo Open. His daughter Sarah, who held animals near and dear, wanted to do something that could help. Blaisdell’s philanthropic ventures reached far beyond just this single tournament, but the fact it was his daughter’s idea makes the lasting impact that much more special. “The last couple of years, we’ve hit our goal of $25,000 each year,” said Amber Confer, Zippo’s Events Marketing Manager. “The SPCA has always been very dear to the family. The entire thing is very organic, how it grew and what it’s become now. A few years ago we renamed it in honor of Sarah.” SPCAs around the country assist in educating people on the humane treatment of animals. One of its largest initiatives is helping animals find new homes, as well as education, investigations and services like “Paws for Patriots.” If you have a pet, you can relate to what the organization does on an emotional level. As a non-profit, fundraisers like the Sarah Dorn Blaisdell Memorial are integral to the success and continued operations. “The community really comes together for this,” Confer said. “It’s very well attended year-in and year-out, and we always fill the field. It’s just a really nice day of golf and charitable work, knowing you’re helping such a worthy cause.” Being hosted at The Pennhills Club doesn’t hurt. The course, under direction of PGA Professional Jake Northrup, remains one of the most well-kept and challenging tracks in the area. “Right now, the course is in the best shape in recent memory,” Northrup said. “It’s dry, which helps the course play the way it’s supposed to be played, especially the greens. It’s nice when we get it into top shape so early, especially with the Sarah Dorn Blaisdell being one of the first premier events on the calendar.” Zippo and The Pennhills Club remain a tour de force of partnerships, as the annual Blaisdell Open - with a $130,000 total purse and $50,000 to the winner - has one of the highest payouts for a tournament of its scale in the country. The Zippo Open: Sarah Dorn Blaisdell Memorial is a 10am shotgun and will be followed by a 50/50 raffle and a cocktail awards ceremony. Entry is $200 per team, and the field is limited to 40 teams. Dan Cass likes to golf. The local entrepreneur and former restaurant owner, realizing the Arcade area was in need of a country club, saw opportunity when Turkey Run went up for sale in 2015. Combining the two things he loved - golf and small business - made the purchase one he doesn’t regret. Now, with a reinvigorated attitude and a brand-new clubhouse, Turkey Run has become a staple in the local golf and restaurant scene. Built in 1987, Turkey Run had a reputation as a short, fun track. The value of the greens fees matched the course - you wouldn’t pay top dollar, but you also wouldn’t expect Augusta. A small building greeted golfers to check-in and head out, but after the round, you’d pack up and go home. When Cass bought the name and adjacent 95 acres of land, he had a grander vision. Construction began soon after on a new clubhouse and restaurant that could offer more than just post-round drinks. Completed in July of 2018, the clubhouse offers bar and dinner seating, a wraparound porch for drinks outside, and the ability to host large parties and tournaments. “It’s a full-service bar & grille,” Cass said. “Since its completion, we’ve hosted bridal and baby showers, birthday parties, banquets, Christmas parties … you name it. There are a multitude of clubs that meet here twice a month, and we’re expecting more for the upcoming summer.” Typically, golf courses and their clubhouses shut down for the winter months. But this past winter, Cass and Turkey Run decided to stay open throughout the cold. A cornhole league in November and December, Wednesday wing nights and specials through the week kept them busy. Plus, it helped keep Turkey Run in mind for potential new members. “It’s still a little early, but I’ve taken in way more memberships than previous years, and I think a lot of that has to do with the clubhouse,” Cass said. “I’m expecting more memberships once the weather breaks. We’ve substantially increased the size of our men’s and ladies’ leagues.” While the club hasn’t changed any of the course layout (as of yet), they’ve taken on a new commitment to maintenance and upkeep. Mowing, cleaning out ditches, taking care of the greens and other general course work has allowed for a much better golf experience. “The greens and fairways are immaculate,” Cass said. “We’ve really done a nice job of making sure the course stays in good shape. We’ve thrown around some ideas on changing a few holes, but that’s down the road. For this year, we’re going to continue our maintenance commitment, blacktop the lot around the clubhouse and make the landscaping look a little nicer. It’s all of those little things that people notice.” Turkey Run offers single, couple and senior military membership options. Early memberships receive 10% off menu items in the clubhouse, while current purchases get you 5% off. You can book your tee time at the website, and Cass says they’re looking into more 3rd party apps to make it easier for golfers to book. “It’s definitely a new look for the course,” he said. “It’s maintained, the greens and fairways are immaculate, and there’s always something going on at the clubhouse.”

Manufactured and modular homes are gaining in popularity throughout the region By Mary Heyl For first-time homeowners in their 30’s to recent retirees interested in downsizing, manufactured and modular homes are gaining in popularity throughout the region. Speedy construction, customization, energy efficiency and affordability are just some of the reasons why many are opting for modular and manufactured home construction. Fortunately, there are several local companies who have been building these homes – and communities – for generations. Now is the perfect time to begin planning that summer or fall build that will be move-in ready before you can say, “There’s no place like home for the holidays!”

Modular and manufactured homes are very affordable options that can also be customized.” Kwi noted, “Millenials are becoming huge in the market. They’re ready for their first home, but maybe graduating with some debt. This is a great option that also offers efficient living. Differently than a traditional mortgage, money is borrowed in advance of having a house; however, once the home is completed, owners are issued a certificate of occupancy. You’re definitely on the trail to something big as you explore the golf trail, outdoor adventures and the small-town charm of the villages within the Allegheny National Forest Region of northwestern Pennsylvania.
THE GOLF TRAIL OF McKEAN COUNTY Enjoy playing on the public course of Pine Acres Country Club, an 18-hole golf course located at the edge of the picturesque Allegheny National Forest. Or join as a member to enjoy all the privileges of the Pennhills Club, home of the Blaisdell Pro Am, in Bradford, Pennsylvania. TRAIL CENTRAL: FIND YOUR FAVORITE TRAIL The diverse offering of trails within the Allegheny National Forest Region makes this a hub for outdoor recreation. Find beautiful, scenic hiking trails for both the novice and the experienced backpacker. Bring your mountain bike to enjoy the trails at Jakes Rocks. Rent an ATV and have a fun-filled day out on the ATV trails at Majestic Kamp & Lost Trails. Or, enjoy kayaking at Willow Bay on the Allegheny Reservoir. Knox & Kane Rail Trail - Our newest trail is a 3.8-mile linear trail connecting the Kinzua Bridge State Park to the town of Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. Perfect for hiking or biking, the trail is a crushed limestone. It is rated easy, making it a perfect trail for families with children. Trailhead parking is in the village of Mt. Jewett behind the Borough office at the intersection of Center and Peterson Street, or at the Kinzua Bridge State Park, 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. Timberdoodle Flats Interpretive Trail - Two trail loops totaling 1.5-miles. The timberdoodle is the nickname of the American woodcock, one of the many birds you might get a glimpse of along the trail. The Woodcock Loop is marked with yellow woodcock insignia and features 12 interpretive stops. The Bluebird Trail is suitable for wheelchair or walking assistance equipment and features six interpretive stops. The trail is perfect for the casual hiker, parents with small children, and first-time birders. The trailhead is located along Route 59, west of Bradford. Difficulty level is easy. Kinzua Valley Trail - A beautiful woodland trail for hiking and biking, 7-miles in length.

The trail is located along the banks of Kinzua Creek, a scenic woodland stream. The surface is crushed limestone. Two trailheads are available for this linear trail; from Route 219, travel to the village of Westline; from Kane, travel north on Route 321 to Red Bridge Campground. Overnight accommodations are available at the Westline Inn, 15 E.L. Day Drive, Westline, PA (814-778-5103) or cabins and campsites are available at Red Bridge Campground, Route 321, Kane, PA (814-368-4158) in the Allegheny National Forest. Difficulty level is moderate. Rimrock Overlook & Trail - A short 1.3-mile trail connection between one of the most stunning overlooks in the Forest to the Kinzua Beach Recreation Area is located along Route 59, west of Bradford. A large sign on the left of Route 59 marks the access road to this recreation area. Trail difficulty is easy to moderate. The recreation area does include picnic tables and free parking. Kinzua Sky Walk-Kinzua Creek Trail - Both are located at the Kinzua Bridge State Park. The Kinzua Sky Walk stretches out 624 ft. into the Kinzua Gorge, at a height of 225 ft. The skywalk offers 360-degree views of the gorge. The skywalk features a partial glass floor from which you have additional amazing views of the countryside. Difficulty level is easy. Kinzua Creek Trail is a short trail which winds down the steep sides of the gorge. Access is from the pathway between the skywalk and the wooden overlook. The trail is steep and rated difficult. Be sure to wear footwear suitable for hiking. The Kinzua Bridge State Park is located at 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, PA. Admission is free. Mountain Biking Trails - Jakes Rock Trails is a 30+ mile trail system designed by Trail Solutions, a world-class trail company affiliated with IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association). This stacked loop mountain biking trail system appeals to riders of all skill levels. Morrison Trail, a shared use trail with hikers, is a popular 10.8-mile loop for mountain biking. The large trailhead is located along Route 59, west of Bradford. Mountain biking is also permitted on all Pennsylvania State Forest roads and old logging roads.
Bradford Brew Station is a new craft brewery which features 14 craft brews on tap, local wines and liquors along with fun and innovative food. The brewery pays honor to Bradford’s history as the ‘High-Grade Oil Metropolis of the World,” in the names of its brews - Black Gold Bock, Peg Leg Porter, Yellow Dog Honey, and Oil Drummer’s Ale are just a few examples. The lights are fashioned of oil cans, the beer taps and glassware feature oil derricks, and the servers wear work uniforms with names like Joe and Sam. The menu offers pub favorites like mac & cheese, tacos and crab cakes. Salads and appetizers include an apple-ham julienne salad, lobster dip, deep fried pickles, jumbo soft pretzels and loaded tater tots. BBQ beef, veggie wrap, deep-fried turkey and the chicken and bacon waffle are a sampling of the sandwiches offered. The Bradford Brew Station is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 3pm-10pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 12pm-10pm. ATV Trail Riding - Open year-round, Majestic Kamp & Lost Trails offers a variety of trails with two different skill levels, novice and advanced. There are over 41 miles of technical and challenging forest trails offering lots of fun for all age groups. You can pay a day pass fee, or for those with their own ATVs and a desire to visit often, a seasonal pass is available. Hidden deep within the forest of northwestern Pennsylvania is an engineering masterpiece The Kinzua Viaduct once soared 301 feet high and 2,053 feet across - it was the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau
It was a bridge unlike any the world had ever seen. In 1882 General Thomas Kane, a Philadelphia lawyer, decorated American Civil War Veteran, and president of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad and Coal Company, had rich coal deposits south of the Kinzua Gorge. But since his customers were to the north, Kane needed to cross the valley. Kane needed a bridge. Paris-born Octave Chanute, chief engineer for the Erie-Railroad, rose to the challenge. The man who would later help the Wright brothers fly had a bold solution - a bridge unlike any the world had seen.
to the masonry foundation piers. This design allowed lateral expansion in the tower legs under temperature loading. But his failure to replace the original 1882 anchor bolts would have catastrophic consequences. In July 2003, engineers and skilled bridge builders were hard at work on a $12 million repair project to reinforce the aging structure. The workers decided to call it a day when the sky went black and the winds rushed in. A tornado tore through the forest, heading straight for the Viaduct. Hundreds of trees were ripped from their roots and 11 of the bridge’s 20 towers were lifted, twisted and thrown onto the valley floor. Six towers remained standing on the south end; only three towers remained upright on the north end.
Chief Engineer Octave Chanute contracted the Pennsylvania firm of Clarke, Reeves & Company to design and fabricate the bridge. Adolphus Bonzano designed a wrought iron bridge using his “Phoenix Column,” an engineering breakthrough that enabled tall structures to resist vibration and buckling.
Engineers later confirmed that winds attacked in three directions. The original 1882 anchor bolts and collar coupling assemblies, which mated the old bolts to the later 1900 construction, had failed.
The bridge was pre-fabricated in Phoenixville, near Philadelphia, and transported to the site for erection. Once the sandstone foundation piers were in place, 125 men, working 10-hour days, completed the construction in just 94 days.
REINVENTED AS THE KINZUA SKYWALK
Standing 301 feet tall (24 feet higher than the Brooklyn Bridge) the Viaduct quickly became a tourist destination. Walking out on the bridge was the next best thing to flying. But by 1900, the locomotives and railroad cars hauling coal and timber across the Viaduct became larger and heavier. A stronger steel bridge was required. Using 6.7 million pounds of steel, workers erected a new bridge to replace the original.
Within 30 seconds, nature had brought the mighty span to its knees. The remaining six towers of the original Kinzua Viaduct were stabilized and reinvented as the Kinzua Sky Walk. Towering over the Kinzua Gorge at a height of 225 feet and 624 feet long, the new skywalk has a partial glass floor overlook at the end of the pedestrian walkway which features the historic railroad tracks. Views are breathtaking. Opened to the public in September 2011, the Kinzua Sky Walk pays tribute to the past while emerging once again as an amazing engineering marvel.

Not only was the Kinzua Viaduct successful in transporting Kane’s coal across the valley, it instantly became a popular tourist attraction bringing sightseers from around the globe to visit. Kinzua Bridge State Park, with the Kinzua viaduct as its centerpiece, was created in 1963. The Kinzua Viaduct was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and the National Register of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks in 1982.
The Kinzua Sky Walk was named as “One of the Top 10 Most Scenic Skywalks in the World” by The Culture Trip, U.K. Located at the Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania, the Kinzua Sky Walk is open to the public year round. Admission to the park and the Kinzua Sky Walk is free.
The Kinzua Viaduct spanned the Kinzua Gorge for more than a century before it partially collapsed under the powerful winds of a tornado in 2003.

The park includes tree shaded picnic areas, areas for biking and birding, and a park pavilion which can be rented. In addition, there are two trails, the easy 1-mile General Kane trail, and a second more challenging trail, the Kinzua Creek Trail which leads to the bottom of the gorge where the fallen towers of the original viaduct still remain.
