ELLICOTTVILLE CHURCH EMBRACES A MODERN FORM OF WORSHIP

When Dan Buringrud left corporate sales for seminary school in St. Louis, he was making a major life change. A native Californian by way of The Bay (San Francisco), he returned a pastor to Sacramento. But when an opportunity came up to leave The Golden State for the Lake Effect-filled, bone-cold area of New York we call home, he took it. God, as it seems, works in mysterious ways. Buringrud, or known more affectionately by his flock as “Pastor Dan,” is changing the way churchgoers at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church think about weekend worship. By Spencer Timkey When Dan Buringrud left corporate sales for seminary school in St. Buringrud, or known more affectionately by his flock as “Pastor Dan,” is changing the way churchgoers at Ellicottville’s St. Paul’s Lutheran Church think about weekend worship. Regardless of your Christian denomination, most of it sounds the same: We are poor, miserable sinners with zero chance at redemption. Pastor Dan, while agreeing with it to an extent, takes a little different approach. “I’m not saying none of that is true, but do we really need to hear it all the time, on every Sunday? I want to focus on the other side of the picture - that fact that we are loved, unconditionally. It hit me a couple of years ago. This is what we’re supposed to do - love our neighbors, our community, love the unlovable. That’s the message we try to preach.” If you’re an old school Lutheran, or Catholic, or Baptist, this all may sound rather … blasphemous. And to Pastor Dan, that’s perfectly okay. “If the noise gets too loud, I’ll pack up and head back to California,” he added, laughing. “I do what I do.” Part of St. Paul’s allure is in their youth-driven movement. Ellicottville natives Josh Bower and Connor Helwig have been instrumental in both bringing the church into the social media age and organizing Saturday night freeform worship … which became so popular, Pastor Dan incorporated it into their weekly routine. “They started doing some pre-recorded stuff on the screen, some musical stuff,” he said. “It got to a point where it was becoming wildly popular, so we got the band back together, so to say. It’s amazing how much musical talent is in our parish. So there’s that, and starting on April 8th we’ll do two services on Sunday. One will be a little more formal than the other, but now that I’m full-time it will be easier.” (Pastor Dan recently was splitting time between Ellicottville and Allegany.) And how could we forget to mention ... The Sign? The Sign isn’t a sign from God, but it might as well be. You’ve probably noticed St. Paul’s road sign on your way in or out of Ellicottville via Route 219. You know - the one that has the super inspiring or hilarious messages? So hilarious, in fact, that ESPN Sports Business Reporter Darren Rovell tweeted a picture to his 2+ million Twitter followers. The sign read: “Please God, Anybody But the Patriots.” “I follow Rovell on Twitter, and while scrolling through, I said ‘wait a minute - that’s our sign!’” Pastor Dan said. “Connor was responsible for that one. But no one person is the true owner. Sometimes I do it, sometimes Connor does it, but we try to make it inspiring each time we do it.” St. Paul’s, which underwent a massive addition back in 2008, is one of the most beautiful churches in the county. It is located at 6360 Route 242 in Ellicottville (about a half mile east of the village), and Pastor Dan was quick to point out that everyone is welcome. “Whatever your religious background, or no background, everyone is welcome. Sinners, good people, everyone is welcome. We want to be the church for the community.” For more information, head to www.stpaulsellicottville.com or search them on Facebook.

ELLICOTTVILLE

WINTER CARNIVAL / MARDI GRAS PARADE

A weekend unlike any all year! Mardi Gras / Winter Carnival in Ellicottville takes the fun of spring skiing and couples it with engaging activities - on and off the slopes. Mark the weekend of March 9-11 on your calendar, and get yourself to Ellicottville to participate! The fun starts Friday evening with Ellicottville’s Masquerade Party, a lively event produced by our local Chamber of Commerce that crowns the King and Queen of Mardi Gras, chosen by crowd applause. This year’s Masquerade will take place at Madigan’s, which will be transformed into an authentic Fat Tuesday celebration. Staff will dish up New Orleans style food, with music and a costume contest to boot! Tickets are available at the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce office or online at www.ellicottvilleny.com. Head to Holiday Valley Saturday morning to kick off all the on-snow entertainment! Take the kids to get their faces painted at Customer Service before making your way to the Safety Patrol Cookout at the base of Yodeler. We know you’ll want to #thankasnowmaker, and you can do so at Yodeler’s Snowbar! The crew will start to pile up snow and shape it at the beginning of the month, and our beloved snowmakers will be ready and waiting to serve you a fresh cold one … nothing beats a Snowbar beer. Head into Yodeler from 4-8pm for live music! The 26th Annual Mardi Gras Parade marches down Ellicottville’s main drag at 6pm Saturday, with costumes, floats and plenty of festive flair. You can anticipate seeing Punxsutawney Phil (this year’s Grand Marshall), as well as the famed Zippo truck and many zany marching groups represented by local businesses. It’s going to be tough to beat some of the floats from last year, so get your creative juices flowing and start building - applications are available at www.ellicottvilleny.com. Waking up early Sunday morning will yield benefits, as you can fill up on a Holiday Valley pancake breakfast at the top of Champagne (courtesy of the Ski Patrol). At 11:45am, you’re invited to line up for the Costume Parade at the top of Edelweiss. The parade will traverse its way down Mardi Gras slope, and once again HV is awarding the best costume - the winner will get a free Seasons Classic pass for next season! Head back over to Yodeler Sunday afternoon, because you’re not going to want to miss potentially the funniest event at HV all year - the Dummy Downhill. It’s simple: build a dummy, put it on skis, point it down Yodeler and watch it fly. Registration for the Dummy Downhill is $5; find the sign-up sheet, as well as a complete schedule of the weekend’s events, at www.holidayvalley.com.

HOLIDAY VALLEY’S SPRING POND SKIMMING PARTY You’ve seen crashes, costumes and characters. Pond Skimming at Holiday Valley is a must-do at least once in your life! Lower Yodeler sets the stage on Saturday, March 24 … start a little bit up Yodeler slope and get your speed - you’ll need it - before keeping those #tipsup and ripping across an icy patch of water. Pond Skimming side effects may include, but are not limited to: side pain (from laughing); regular pain (from hitting the water); mood swings (watching the success and failure) and trouble hearing (from the crowd). Registration starts at 11am, and both skiers and snowboarders are welcome to participate. Minimum age is 8, and anyone under 18 will need a parent signature. The Pond Skimming action will kickoff at 1pm. Last year, we saw gorillas, super heroes, 70s disco stars, presidential candidates ... (I am certain we will see those again), lots of splashes and lots of crashes! Categories: Best Skimmer, Best Costume, Best Kid and Best Splash. Enjoy this annual favorite with food, drinks from the mini Snowbar and great company. When the day is done, you can cross this one off your bucket list! Details at www.holidayvalley.com.

END OF AN ERA.

HoliMont General Manager Dave Riley announced his retirement, effective this June, after 18 years in the position. Dave has made such an impact on HoliMont - and the ski industry in general - that it is hard to summarize. Mr. Riley is only the 3rd GM in HoliMont’s 55 year history. Please join us in wishing Dave and his family the best.

Men’s Day. Men’s Day at HoliMont has become an annual tradition not to be missed. This year’s event had a max capacity of 600 men and sold out the week before the event. There was plenty of food (including grill-your-own steaks) and drinks, feats of strength, adult tricycle races, music, hand rolled cigars, bourbon tasting and more ...

Oh yeah, the skiing was pretty sweet too.

Nick Ventura. For those of you who may not know who this is ... This is Nick Ventura. As Nick refers to it, “This Saturday (Feb. 17) will be my anniversary.” Seven years ago, Nick was on the receiving end of a catastrophic accident on Snowbird slope. Thanks to the amazing care and response from HoliMont’s Ski Patrol, Nick is alive and well, and today, is doing a great job as part of HoliMont’s Safety Patrol. #grateful

FLITE Cup Victory. The FLITE Cup returns home to HoliMont after a five-year hiatus! To determine the winning team, podium place points were added up in each age group for the combined twoday mogul event. Last year Buffalo Ski Club claimed the Cup, and prior years it was Holiday Valley and Bristol Mountain. The HoliMont FLITE Team had many new faces competing for the first time this season, including Bobby Berglund, John Dunn, Cayden Hacker, Brody Closs, Kylie Wells, Colby Wells, Elliott Manley and Connor Fitzgerald. Brandon Crotty and Sasha MacGregor received age group awards as well as overall podiums. Others that contributed to the FLITE Cup title receiving podiums in their age group include: Abby Hayes-Vickers, Kylee Hacker, Kylie Wells, Lizzy Keefe, Vincent Difrancesco, Elliot Manley, Kam McNamara and Cayden Hacker. Well done FLITE Team!

A trip of a lifetime.

Local skier Patricia Mangan from Derby, NY (below, left) was all smiles (can you blame her?) when she posed for her first photo as an official Winter Olympic Athlete. We can’t wait to hear about her experience and what’s in store for her down the road.

Safety first. HoliMont Area Control and Safety manager Justin Latimer takes safety very seriously. It seems there is always some sort of training or drill going on. Recently, Justin coordinated a drill with local EMTs where they simulated an after ski hours accident at the top of Sunset. The “patient” was treated and evacuated, utilizing the Ellicottville Fire Department’s equipment. For over 50 years, families and snowsports enthusiasts from miles around have converged on HoliMont, North America’s largest private ski area devoted to family skiing adventures. Generations of members have been drawn in by the amazing skiing, only to fall in love with the warm community atmosphere that makes HoliMont the kind of place you never want to leave. Old school charm, good friends, and rockin’ apres parties await you after a fun day on the mountain.

CH-CH-CH-CH-CHANGES ... E L L I C O TTVILLE SKI SHOPS TRANSITION FROM W I N T E R TO S U M MER By Dash Hegeman Change is inevitable. A prime component of the cycle of life, we all must adapt to change. Embrace it or get left behind. This past winter has been a roller coaster of changes. Subzero temps and snow one day, rain and 55 degrees a few days later. Climate change is not a popular topic amongst those of us who love winter. If it were up to us, every Monday through Friday throughout the winter months would bring a steady four to eight inches of snow, and Saturdays and Sundays would be sunny, bluebird days. (It doesn’t seem like too much to ask for.) Alas, that’s not reality and we are left with unpredictable changes that we must adapt to. HoliMont and Holiday Valley have been adapting to change and making the best out of winter for their guests … (and they’ve done an amazing job - as always!) It goes without saying that change affects the ski and snowboard shops in Ellicottville on a regular basis. It’s tough to sell outerwear designed for single digit temperatures when it’s forty degrees outside. And it’s equally difficult to sell boards made for powder if it’s raining, which brings us to the next topic - the annual end of the season sale period. Now is the time to save and find some great deals on outerwear and hard goods. Get ready for the 2018/19 season when you buy and save now because your window of opportunity is short. Some of your beloved local shops will soon be transitioning over to summertime products. Others will close down for the off-season. And one shop staple will turn the lights off for the final time, marking the end of an era in Ellicottville. Here we go, in ABC order …

THE BOARDROOM SNOWBOARD SHOP The Boardroom closes down for the summer so you’ve got limited time to get some great deals. According to Spencer Timkey, the shop plans to stay open through the end of March, and even into April as long as Holiday Valley and HoliMont are still running lifts. Their end-of-season sale is taking place right now! All hard goods (excluding Burton Step-Ons) are now 20% off and you’ll find at least 20% off most other items in the shop. They are also converting the helmet/goggle room to a “super sale” room where you’ll be able to find items at a 70% discount. That’s not a deal. That’s a legit steal! While they are not on sale, Timkey says that the Burton Step-On binding system has been a top seller in the shop this season. As of the time of this printing, the shop has one men’s setup left and a handful of women’s setups … so ladies, if you need new boots and bindings for your deck, go and check this new tech out. It’s a snowboarding game-changer. Every summer, The Boardroom goes through some sort of summertime upgrade, and this summer will be no different. Timkey reports that they will focus on creating some more build-outs that put more emphasis on products. They will also reconfigure the shop a bit to freshen up the look for next winter. And when that work isn’t going on, you can find the family out on the golf course and spending time with the newest member of their crew, Samantha’s son, Hayes.

THE CITY GARAGE As is custom, the shop will stay open throughout the summer season and will be the spot to hang out and talk all things hiking and outdoor adventure. As the weather starts to warm up, The City Garage transitions over from skis and boots to camping gear, hammocks and YETI coolers. Known as the number one premium cooler brand in the world, YETI coolers are often referred to as the cooler “built for going toe-to-toe with hungry grizzlies.” In all seriousness, these coolers and their array of products are a must-have for hunters, fishermen, outdoorsmen, and even the “high tech redneck,” Sean, owner of The City Garage, affectionately revealed. The City Garage also stocks a fantastic selection of summer sandles, running shoes, hiking boots and accessories. Footwear from Salomon, Birkenstock, and Keen have been the shop’s mainstays for years. And if you want to talk glamping ... The C.G. can supply you with style and comfort. If you’ve ever shopped The City Garage in the winter, you know just how knowledgeable and dedicated the staff is. That attention to detail and customer service is the same in the summer.

DEKDEBRUNS SNOW SPORTS As you may have heard by now, it’s the end of an era in Ellicottville. Greg Dekdebrun and his family have decided to close the shop after 57 years of business. The shop opened in 1961 and has been helping people have fun ever since. As you can imagine, everything is now on sale and must go, so go check out what they have to offer and expect to find some very aggressive discounts on your favorite gear like parajumpers, high end goggles, helmets, and all skis. Here is a message from Greg and Patti to all their friends and customers: To our valued customers, We have decided to finally retire and will be closing Dekdebruns Snow Sports at the end of this ski season. The decision to close the shop was a difficult one as it has been in our family for over 50 years. It has been a great ride through those years, some when there hasn’t been any snow and some when it just didn’t stop snowing - we have seen them all. The business has been fortunate to have, and have had, some of the best employees in the industry and we are proud of all the people who have worked with us over the years. We want to thank you, our customers, for your continued support over the past many years. We value your trust in us and are glad to count so many of you as friends. Feb. 23rd started our Store Closing Sale and it will continue until our entire inventory is gone. Stop in for some fantastic bargains and say farewell to us and our fantastic staff. Sincerely, - Greg and Patti Dekdebrun

MUD, SWEAT N’ GEARS MSG will remain open through mid-April; its annual winter sale has already started and will get more aggressive mid-March when the end-of-season clearance sale begins. (Stay tuned to their website mudsweatgears.com for more details.) Once the shop shuts down, the sales focus will shift to skiyard.com, where longtime staff member Nick Sciara has been holding down the fort for the past three years and oversees three employees to ensure that the site is up-to-date, working fluidly, and most importantly - getting orders shipped fast! “We work very hard to process all our orders within 24 hours,” said Sciara. “If an order comes in before our daily FedEx pickup, we do our best to get it boxed up and shipped out that day.” The website was a game changer for Mud, Sweat n’ Gears. It essentially meant that the shop was open 24/7 and had a worldwide reach. It also meant that more inventory had to be ordered and kept in the shop, which ultimately benefited the customers coming into the Ellicottville store. The world of e-commerce has also expanded the reach of the shop and allowed it to go international. “We ship to Australia, New Zealand, and Chile regularly in the warmer months,” Sciara stated. “We also spend time managing inventory and tweaking the website so that everything runs smoothly when things ramp up in the fall.” Just in case you are wondering what kind of gear you can find deals on in the shop right now, Sciara gave this rundown of popular items: • Frameless goggles, mostly with interchangeable lenses • Super cute, high activity base layers for women • Nordica Enforcers, Black Crows and Head skis • All ski boots • Marker Griffon, Head Attack 13, Look Pivot Bindings • Big Truck Brand Limited Edition Mikaela Shiffrin hats • Anything from Ski The East … stickers, hats, apparel • Ellicottville Branded beanies, hats and apparel • Hotronic Heated Socks • USA themed merchandise

Chromotherapy, known as color therapy, is the use of color and light to gently bring balance to ones well-being. Color and light have been used for healing since the beginning of time. Color works through and in us, in every nerve, cell, gland and muscle. It shines in our auras and radiates upon us from the sun. Color is an active power, exerting a tremendous influence on our consciousness, soul and spirit. Chromotherapy is offered in the salt cave, salt room and infrared sauna. Each color represents a different ailment in your body and aligns with the chakras. Stop in today to learn more.

Turmeric is a bright spice commonly used in curries and sauces. It comes from the turmeric root and is known for its medicinal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. There are several beneficial compounds in turmeric - the most well-known of these is curcumin. Scientists are excited about curcumin’s potential to ease depression. And because curcumin can help fight inflammation and keep blood sugar levels steady, it could also be a useful tool to prevent or treat type 2 diabetes. Learn about other benefits of turmeric by stopping into Nature’s Remedy.

Whether working, commuting or walking the dog, we need to keep moving. This requires comfy shoes. This is why Nalho has incorporated memory foam into their line of chic, yoga mat espadrilles - to pamper your feet. Creatively designed to reduce physical fatigue, they are just as much about fashion as they are function. Inspired by India and its rich culture, they boast two chic collections in a variety of colors. Gado Gado has brought two colors to Ellicottville, everyone’s favorite black and a stylish black/gold. These sandals are a perfect fit in our active town!

WEAR YOUR BUFFALO ROOTS ON YOUR SLEEVE (OR WRIST, ACTUALLY) HANDMADE JEWELRY CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF EVERY WESTERN NEW YORKER; AVAILABLE AT AMERI-CAN

By Anjanette Nicolazzo For Western New York resident Christine Wittmann, it was a priority to find a work/life balance that would allow her to spend more time in Ellicottville with her kids who are on the freestyle team and her husband who became a ski patroller at Holiday Valley. When her jewelry “hobby” expanded and began to feature more and more pieces with buffalo nickels, Christine left her industrial sales and marketing job and turned her passion for jewelry making into her own brand, bfloGALS. “bfloGALS are women who wear their Buffalo roots on their sleeve (or wrist, actually), and women who embrace the rocky mountain/Sundance/Aspen look,” Christine said. Her unique hand-crafted line features necklaces, bracelets, earrings, hats, and more, and is featured locally in Ellicottville at Ameri-Can. Ameri-Can was Christine’s best retailer in 2017. “When Liz Boberg opened the store, I jumped at the chance to feature my jewelry there because Ellicottville is such a big part of my life. In fact, Liz and I worked together on the EVL wax seal design that coordinates with my bfloGALS wax seal charm; we were thrilled with the results,” she said. The unique look of bfloGALS jewelry sets it apart from other pieces on the retail countertop by not only incorporating the use of Buffalo nickels and enameled pennies, but also by using other intricate charms and materials that carry a distinct look. For example, the Lake Effect Necklace is a double strand black leather necklace, which sports a tierracast pewter snowflake charm, a German crystal snowflake, and the bfloGALS exclusive buffalo charm. There’s sure to be something that fits every bfloGAL’s personality in the bracelet catego-

ry. Bands are comprised of leather, nickels, and cords, and trimmed with several charms, beads, and a variety of crystals. Several bfloGALS bracelets can be worn at the same time to create a stacking effect. In addition to necklaces and bracelets, bfloGALS creates earrings and branded hats, and offers do-it-yourself components of buffalo nickel buttons and pewter buffalo charms. In fact, one of Christine’s long-term goals is to set up the commercial line as sub-assembled parts that women who are looking for flexible work hours can do from home. “I am grateful every day that I have this opportunity to find my balance, and I want to build something that will help others find theirs as well,” she said. Christine conceives, designs, sources, produces, and markets almost all of her designs herself, with the help of her niece, daughter, and a few others. Due to this dynamic team, bfloGALS can easily fulfill large orders within a week or two. In addition to Ameri-Can, her line can be found at the Blue Rooster in Hamburg, Buffalo Gallery & Gift (several locations including in the Eastern Hills Mall), Pink Martini on Grand Island, Thin Ice on Elmwood in Buffalo, BonTon, and Village ARTisan on Main Street in Williamsville. Several of her more popular designs are offered at wholesale, and exclusive designs can be created for house branding. In the future, Wittmann plans to teach jewelry classes again, and is currently working on a jewelry making party idea, similar to the ever-popular paint parties. Learn more about bfloGALS at www.bflogals.com or swing by Ameri-Can the next time you’re in Ellicottville!

ARE YOU READY... for an exciting career working with CA BOCES?

Join our team of professionals! By Mary Heyl It’s the first store that comes to mind when you see “EVL” on the back of a car or the sweatshirt of a passerby: A Touch of Ellicottville, located at 28 Washington in downtown Ellicottville, will be closing this month after 13 exciting years in business! The first store in Ellicottville to use “EVL” as part of its logo, A Touch of Ellicottville is known for its wide variety of clothing, gifts and Ellicottville-themed souvenirs. As the store’s lease has ended and the building owners prepare to utilize the space in a new way, A Touch of Ellicottville will be saying “goodbye” to its familiar spot on Washington Street - stop in and say “goodbye,” too, and scoop up some amazing clearance deals! Owner Valerie Quesnel, along with her partners Jay Monti, Tom O’Connor, and Val’s daughter and son-in-law Tara and Rene Latreille, have enjoyed running the store in downtown Ellicottville for the past thirteen years, seven of which were spent in a smaller location across the street before moving to its current spot. At 1,200 square feet, the current location has proven to be an even better location, and certainly a larger one. “Our goal was to provide Ellicottville souvenirs at reasonable prices,” explained Quesnel. “It took us a little while to catch on, but once we did, we really grew quickly. The move to our current spot has been even better!” Prior to opening A Touch of Ellicottville, Quesnel was in the film business, having worked out of Toronto for several years for Paramount Pictures. After spending the past thirteen years as a store owner, Quesnel has observed many changes to the retail scene, but despite these changes, she believes the future looks bright for places like Ellicottville. “The whole face of retail has changed,” Quesnel pointed out. “We’re seeing big box stores closing, like Macy’s and the Bon-ton, but more small boutiques opening. We have a niche here in Ellicottville, especially at our store. You can’t go online and find the kind of Ellicottvillethemed merchandise that we have here.” Indeed, A Touch of Ellicottville is visitors’ one-stop shop for all things “EVL” and beyond! “Of course, we carry the very popular EVL car stickers and many other items with that logo like mugs, shot glasses, flasks, travel mugs, bottle openers, magnets and pillows. Our soft goods include a tie dye line, t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, pajama pants and more,” said Quesnel. The store also carries a wide array of gifts, clothing and accessories that are not Ellicottville-themed. Best-selling items include Duke Cannon Supply Co. soaps, “big face” tshirts, personalized wooden signs and a huge selection of hats and gloves. Quesnel added, “Over the years, we have been happy to support the Ellicottville Fire Department by selling shirts that feature the firemen’s logo on the front and their initials, E.F.D. on the back, and donating the profits to them.”

“We’re known as the ‘Ellicottville store of Ellicottville,’” said Quesnel, “and we’ve just really enjoyed being a part of this community.” Not only has Quesnel’s store benefitted from the busy foot traffic of skiers and tourists, but it’s also benefitted from relationships with the other businesses in town. “Although we’re no longer the only store that sells EVL-themed items, other businesses send customers to us who are looking for particular items, and we do the same for these businesses. It’s important for small businesses to support each other, and that’s how we are here in Ellicottville,” said Quesnel. A Touch of Ellicottville is open daily from 10am-5pm and shoppers can start taking advantage of big savings, including 50% discounts on select clothing, now through the end of ski season. For more information, stop in or call 716-699-5385, or search the store on Facebook.

WAGYU COULOTTE

BEER CLAMS

The Silver Fox hands down serves up some of the best cuts of Wagyu/American Kobe beef in the area! What is it? Simply put: it is the finest quality of beef available in the United States. Highly prized for their rich flavor, Wagyu/Kobe cattle’s genetic predisposition yields a beef that contains a higher percentage of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids than typical beef. The combinations of these fats deliver a distinctive rich and tender flavor with intense marbling. It is arguably the most desired beef in the world, and lucky for us, we can enjoy it right here in Ellicottville!

We know where to go for good clams! The Public House serves up a pound of fresh clams steamed in local beer with Italian sausage, garlic, parsley, and fresh jalapenos. (Sooo good!) For those of you with an appetite for seafood, The Public House menu also boasts scallops and shrimp in a creole brown butter sauce, crab cake with a Cajun aioli, and local favorite - lobster poutine - butter poached lobster smothered with fresh cut fries, cheese curd, and seafood béchamel. Don’t forget, The Public House is open for Brunch on weekends starting at 10am. Find their full menu on their website.

Girls, have you been looking for a reason to get together and have an amazing experience that’s both relaxing and fun? The Ellicottville Girls Getaway Weekend is exactly what you need, and it’s set to take place June 1-3, 2018. Whether you’re a mother, a girlfriend, married, single, a sister, an aunt, a grandma, or just a girl who likes to have fun and unwind with the ladies on occasion, this weekend was created just for you!

The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that DENNIS DEYOUNG AND THE MUSIC OF STYX and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will headline the 2018 Summer Music Festival. Join in the excitement Independence Day Weekend, when the first fairway of Holiday Valley’s Double Black Diamond Golf Course becomes one of the best outdoor concert venues in the region.

“Let’s put the fun back in running!” Attention runners! (Whether you’re a competitive athlete, a casual runner, or just someone who’s looking to get outside, get some exercise and have fun!) the Happy Half Marathon, 5K and Beer Mile will return to Holiday Valley for the third year in a row on Saturday, May 12, 2018. “Sometimes it’s not about the distance - it’s about how you get there and what you do after that’s more important!” says Gwen Bush, who, along with her husband Doug, organizes this event and others similar to it, including the 4 for 44 Relay held in Chautauqua each September, and the EVL Halloween Half & 5K race held in October. “While we encourage competitive running, this is by no means a race where winning is everything. The Happy Half and 5K is meant to be fun! It starts in front of Holiday Valley’s main lodge, before taking you through the beautiful back roads around Ellicottville - and finally finishing back at the resort.” Think a half marathon is boring? Think again! Athletes are sure to appreciate the many fun distractions that will be set up along the course. “We aren’t talking bubbles and unicorns,” says Gwen, “but you never know!” There will be plenty of hydration support along the way too, brought to you by the many volunteers that are strategically placed along the race route. Multiple competitive age brackets (men’s and women’s) invite everyone to participate. The entire family can - and should - come to run! The Half Marathon starts at 10am, and the 5K follows suite at 10:20am. Feel free to dress up your running attire; it’s not uncommon to see tu-tu’s, capes, and costumes of all sorts. “But maybe our favorite part of the day is the Southern Tier Brewing Beer Mile,” says Gwen. Do you think you could drink a beer and run a 1/4 mile … then do it again … and again … and again? Test your legs (and your stomach) and sign up for this final race of the day - the Beer Mile takes off at 1pm. The after-party is no doubt a party for sure, and will feature entertainment, food and beer (of course!) at HV’s main lodge. Bring your smiles to run the miles! The Happy Half, 5K and Beer Mile are brought to you by EnduranceFactor Events, Southern Tier Brewing Company, Holiday Valley Resort, Centerplate, and the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce. Sign up for the Happy Half, 5K and Southern Tier Beer Mile at happyhalfrun.com. Registration is limited; get on it soon before it’s too late! You can follow the Happy Half on Instagram for updates (@evlhalf_ happyhalf) or on Facebook (Happy Half, EVL Half, 4 for 44-EnduranceFactor Events).

Plan a trip to the bustling village of Ellicottville with all your gal pals and enjoy a plethora of activities that are being planned - everything from yoga, jewelry making, scarf tying, mixology, essential oils workshops and more will be available for participants. An outstanding brunch, cocktail hour and amazing shopping specials will all be included in your Girls Getaway registration price. Here’s a sneak peek at a few of the activities being planned … Welcome Reception: No retreat would be complete without a welcome party! A special reception Friday night at the EllicottVillas will invite participants of Girls Getaway Weekend to mingle, pick up their registration packets and goodie bags, and have the opportunity to review and meet the instructors of all the activities/classes being offered. The events committee is anxious to spoil you with amazing hors d’oeuvres, wine tastings and other special treats. Yoga: Laura Solly, owner of Laura Solly Yoga and Daff Drygoods, will be teaching Hatha Yoga classes including meditation and breath work along with some partner poses. “We all love to come here and shop, eat, laugh, drink wine, talk, and be healthy with our spas, yoga, hiking, etc. Girls Getaway Weekend in Ellicottville is the perfect opportunity for all of that.” At Daff, Laura and her staff are already putting together plans to decorate the store festively and invitingly for women, and they’ll be offering an in-store special for shoppers as well. Essential Oils: Nature’s Remedy will offer workshops on Essential Oils and the many different benefits, applications for daily use, fun questionnaires that participants can fill out to asses which oils will be most beneficial for them, inhalation sampling, and the opportunity to “make and take” your own essential oil. Kristina Barlow, Ellicottville native and Naturopathic Doctor for Nature’s Remedy, is excited to share her wealth of essential oils education with other women during Girls Getaway Weekend. Scarf Tying: Ava Grace Fashion’s scarf tying videos on Facebook have opened up the door to new and different ways to wear scarves. Owner Jessica Maynard will offer scarf tying sessions at her store (located next to The Tee Bar). “It’s going to be a fun hands-on event and each person will get to leave with a new scarf at the end of our workshop,” she said. For those who already wear and love scarves, this will be a chance to pick up new ideas or share their tips with others in the group. And for those who say they don’t wear scarves or have no clue what to do with them, no worries! According to Jess, “This will be a fun crash course in adding a bit of color and style to any outfit using scarves.” More information about Girls Getaway Weekend, including added activities and registration details, can be found at www. ellicottvilleny.com. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Plan now and save your spot - it’ll be a weekend you and your girlfriends will be thankful for!

Ellicottville’s Summer Music Festival is known for its high-energy concerts on the slopes of Holiday Valley. Visitors in town during the weekend will also enjoy many downtown activities, including the Arts & Crafts Show featuring over 50 quality vendors, free musical performances at the Gazebo in Village Square, all the amazing dining and shopping that can be done within a four-block walkable footprint, and perhaps the most anticipated event of them all - the Pet Parade, which invites everyone and their beloved pets to dress up and march down the main drag in Ellicottville. THE ROOTS & BOOTS TOUR

SNOWED-IN ~ MARCH 2018 ... Page 25

THREE OF COUNTRY MUSIC’S VETERAN SUPERSTARS COME TOGETHER FOR A NIGHT OF PURE BOOT SCOOTIN’ ENTERTAINMENT By Melanie Hulick

The Roots & Boots Tour will bring three of country music’s veteran superstars together in Salamanca this April. All-time favorites Sammy Kershaw, Colin Raye and Aaron Tippin will share the stage inside the Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino’s Events Center April 28, and are guaranteed to have fans “boot scootin’” in the isles for a night of pure country … old school. With over 40 albums between them, there is no shortage of hit material to choose from. Grab your tickets early to what will be a down home party with a few of your country cousins! Visit wwwsenecacasinos.com and click on Seneca Allegany for more info and tickets.

SATURDAY | APRIL 28 @ 7pm

SAMMY KERSHAW Singer/songwriter Sammy Kershaw has always been known as an artist that won’t record or sing a song unless he’s lived it. Sticking to this notion, he has had a long career of hit songs such as “Cadillac Style”, “Third Rate Romance”, “Meant To Be” and his number one hit “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful” - his first single off of the album of the same name.

“I love to play and do live shows,” says Kershaw. “So this tour is a lot of fun for me and my band.”

Kershaw started out with an interest in music when his grandfather gave him his first guitar at the age of 11. He found himself playing local honky-tonks at night to help his family pay the bills when that same year his father passed away. Born in Kaplan, in southern Louisiana, Kershaw was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and in 2010 was inducted into the Louisiana Songwriter Association Hall of Fame. Today Kershaw is still actively touring and is one of the members of the Roots & Boots Tour that will be crisscrossing the U.S., making a stop at Seneca Allegany in April.

COLIN RAYE With 24 top ten records and 16 #1 hits, singer Colin Raye has an arsenal of fan favorites to bring to the tour. His first album, All I Can Be, produced the hit single “Love, Me”. From there the singer has rode the country music train of hits that include straight to the heart ballads like “Not That Different”, “What The Heart Wants”, “In This Life” and up-tempo country rockers like “My Kind Of Girl” and “That’s My Story”. As an artist that makes music that is described as issue oriented, and for his endless support of social causes, Raye was presented the Humanitarian of the Year Award at the Country Radio Seminar in 2001. Raye also gained critical acclaim when he teamed up for two duets with piano man Jim Brickman on “The Gift” and “Peace (Where The Heart Is)”. Add in the release of his first inspirational album, “His Love Remains” and the tribute album, “Still On The Line” featuring songs of his long-time friend Glen Campbell who recently passed away, and you can see why the singer has earned 10 Male Vocalist nominations and has touched fans of every generation and in every standing in life.

AARON TIPPIN Celebrating over 25 years in the music business, Aaron Tippin describes himself as being the luckiest hillbilly that ever lived. The country singer frontman for the American working class burst onto the scene with his first single, “You’ve Got To Stand For Something”, which garnered him an invitation by Bob Hope’s daughter Linda to go over and entertain the troops in the Gulf War. A patriotic theme was shown by Tippin with the release of “Where The Stars and Stripes and Eagle Fly” in the aftermath of 9/11. Today the singer is still touring and is thrilled to be a part of the Roots & Boots Tour with two of his country friends. With hits like “There Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong With The Radio”, “Kiss This”, “Workin’ Man’s PhD”, “My Blue Angel” and “That’s As Close As I’ll Get To Loving You”, Tippin is sure to please the audience with his portion of the show. As far as his fans go, the singer says, “Don’t call them fans … they’re family. They’re not strangers anymore … they have been so great to me over the years, and they’re still coming out to the shows over 25 years later.”

Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com

TRAIL CENTRAL

THINK SPRING! By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau

March days bring the promise of fun! The sunshine is warmer. The air smells fresh, with a soft scent of spring. Bird songs drift in the breeze. The forest lands reawaken with a blush of spring green in the Allegheny National Forest. Thinking green, St. Paddy’s Day offers a fun holiday where everyone is Irish. BIRDING IN THE ALLEGHENY NATIONAL FOREST

American Bald Eagle

Birding is a popular activity which can be enjoyed by all ages. More than 200 species of birds can be found in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF), including American bald eagles and osprey. Most commonly found are wild turkey, and ruffed grouse - the state bird of Pennsylvania. American bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) are among the largest birds of prey. They may weigh up to 14 pounds and have seven-foot wingspans. Bald eagles are readily identified by their white heads and tails; however, they don’t attain this plumage until five years of age. They nest in large trees near water. Bald eagles have been sighted at the Allegheny Reservoir, Tunungwant Creek, Smethport’s Hamlin Lake, and north of Eldred along the Allegheny River and Oswayo Creek.

Great Male Bluebird

Male Ruby Throat

Osprey (Pandion halaetus), large fish-eating birds of prey, usually mate for life. Osprey nests may be viewed from Rt. 321 along the Longhouse National Scenic Byway north of Kane, Pennsylvania. Avid birders suggest the following sites for birding within the Forest: Timberdoodle Flats Interpretive Trail is named for the American woodcock, also known as the timberdoodle, a bird species that uses both open areas and forest woodlands for mating and nesting. This trail is wonderful for birding beginners. Informational and interpretive signage is located along both trail loops. The Woodcock Loop, 1-¼ miles in distance, is marked with yellow woodcock insignia and features 12 interpretive stops. The shorter Bluebird Trail, ½-mile in distance, is suitable for parents with small children and features six interpretive stops. Trailhead parking is located along Rt. 59, just west of the intersection of Routes 59 and 770. From Bradford, travel south on Rt. 219, turn right onto Rt. 770 heading west, at the intersection with Rt. 59, turn right, then watch for the large brown Forest sign for trailhead parking Buzzard Swamp, south of Kane, includes a 11.2-mile trail system with several loop and connector trails. Buzzard Swamp has fifteen ponds built to offer habitat for wildlife, making this one of the best wildlife-viewing trails in the ANF. With exceptional habitat diversity, numerous species of waterfowl, wading birds, forest and grassland songbirds, call Buzzard Swamp home. Bobolink, Field Sparrow, Barn Swallow, Tree Swallow, Eastern Meadowlark, Indigo Bunting, Great Blue Heron, Wood Duck, Red-shouldered Hawk and Woodcock are within this area.

American bald eagles are often sighted at the Allegheny Reservoir, Tunungwant Creek, Hamlin Lake and the Allegheny River. Peak migration period for song birds is mid-April to the end of May. Hermit Thrush

BIRDING TIPS

• Peak migration period for song birds is mid-April to end of May. • Generally, birds are secretive and shy. Learning bird songs will aid in species identification. • Observe birds when they are most active in the early morning, especially during breeding season. • Binoculars recommended for birding are: 6x32, 7x35, 8x40, 7x42, 8x42 or 8.4x44. • Buy binoculars that have a single focusing knob located between the two barrels that turns one to oneand-a-half times. Don’t buy binoculars with separate focus adjustments on the two barrels-they’re too slow to be useful for birding.

Big Bend Birding Overlook located along Rt. 59, just past the Kinzua Dam between Bradford and Warren, offers an overlook of the Kinzua Dam spillway. Rimrock Overlook, a developed overlook in the ANF, offers a canopy-level view of forest songbirds set among massive borders with great views of the Allegheny Reservoir. Hermit Thrush is a common breeding species, with nests throughout the trails and picnic area. Turkey Vultures and Red-tailed Hawks soar above and around the overlooks, often flying below eye-level. Other breeding forest birds include American Redstart, Blackthroated Blue Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, Eastern Towhee, White-breasted Nuthatch and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Tracy Ridge Campground is where you might glimpse a Northern Saw-whet Owl from March through July. Cerulean Warblers sing in the oak trees along the Tracy Ridge Trail. The Mourning Warbler will likely be seen in clear-cut areas. If you enjoy hiking, you can access both the North Country National Scenic Trail and the Bullis Hollow Trail from the Tracy Ridge Campground in the Allegheny National Forest. A variety of excellent nature and wildlife books are available at the Bradford Ranger Station, 29 Forest Service Drive, Bradford, PA, located at the intersection of Routes 59 and 321 in the Forest. Birding books sold at the Ranger Station through ENFIA (Eastern National Forest Interpretive Association) include: 1) Peterson First Guides: Birds by Roger Tory Peterson; 2) Peterson Field Guide – The Young Birder’s Guide Birds of Eastern North America by Bill Thompson III; 3) Peterson Field Guide to Birds of Eastern and Central North America by Roger Tory Peterson; and 4) Birds of Pennsylvania Field Guide by Stan Tekiela. Cabins, campsites, and tent-only sites can be reserved by calling 877-444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov. Other suggested accommodations near the Forest and Buzzard

COME TOUR WITH US!

The Marilyn Horne Museum • Downtown Bradford, PA

New museum and exhibit center celebrates the life-long career and accomplishments of a Local Legendary Opera Singer

By Mary Heyl One of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of all time and Bradford, Pennsylvania’s most famous daughter, Marilyn Horne has always had a special place in the hearts of many music lovers. And now her legacy has a special place in the heart of Bradford’s downtown historic district. The Marilyn Horne Museum and Exhibit Center, which will be celebrating its first anniversary this spring, has already welcomed over 2,000 visitors interested in the life and career of one of the most lauded opera singers in the world. This spring, Matthew Hileman, manager of the museum, invites visitors to explore this beautiful 3,400-square foot space and experience classical music through the season’s remaining performances of the Chamber Concert Series. Horne was born in Bradford in 1934, where she began singing at a very young age, starting vocal training at the age of four. Horne continued her training when her father moved the family to southern California when she was eleven years old. In 1954, her career took off when she was chosen to sing the vocals for Dorothy Dandridge in the opera-based film, Carmen Jones. From there, Horne went on to perform on different television variety shows, and in 1956, she sailed to Europe to pursue her opera training even further. Igor Stravinsky, one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, recognized Horne’s talent and invited her to perform in the 1956 Venice festival. From there, she performed for three seasons with the Gelsenkirchen Opera in Germany. Horne gained worldwide attention in 1960 when the director of the San Francisco Opera asked her to travel from Europe to audition for a leading role, as the original vocalist became sick and was unable to perform her role. From that point forward, Horne became one of the most sought after mezzo sopranos in the opera world, spending thirty-nine seasons with the San Francisco Opera and twenty-six years with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Horne is the winner of four Grammy awards, and in 1992 she was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President George H.W. Bush. The recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor, Horne has been awarded numerous honorary doctorates and degrees from the Julliard School, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, and several others. Upon her retirement from the stage, Horne devoted her career to teaching aspiring singers, serving as the director of the Voice Program at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California since 1997. In 2013, Horne donated her personal archives to the University of Pittsburgh; the Bradford campus became the centerpiece of the archive. Around this time, work began on a museum devoted to Horne’s career and archives. Seven years earlier, Dr. Robert Weiss donated his and his former business partner’s six-story circa 1932 building to the college. The space was utilized for various university offices and temporary classroom space until the renovation of the college’s Swarts Hall was completed in 2008. Work began to renovate the beautiful

building into a museum, along with a gift shop, café and meeting space. On May 6, 2017, the museum hosted its grand opening, which was attended by Marilyn Horne, herself! Matthew Hileman, who was hired as the museum’s manager last spring, remembered Horne’s reaction to the museum: “Marilyn was here for the opening weekend and was thrilled with the museum. She really had no idea how detailed and visually exciting the finished space would be.” In addition to the exhibits throughout the museum, the space includes a beautiful theater where visitors can view a brief documentary film. According to Hileman, “Albert Filoni, the architect who designed the space, was particularly keen on this project. He chose a final design for the theater which would evoke the interior of La Fenice in Venice. Some of Marilyn’s most acclaimed performances happened there and when she saw the space for the first time she was moved to tears.” Visitors to the museum can look forward to a fully interactive experience that starts with the building’s impressive foyer, complete with marble floors and signature Art Deco architecture. Horne’s archives, which include costumes and personal artifacts, come alive as visitors listen to the accompanying interviews with Horne and her recordings. Hileman emphasized what an important role the museum plays in the region’s history and beyond: “Her archive and the material in it is extremely important to the history of classical voice, opera, music and popular culture of the 20th century. Although we have had visitors from as far away as Germany, the majority of our guests are from Bradford. It has become a great resource for our community and a place where local residents can bring visitors and show off some of the spectacular history of our region.” Feel classical museum come to life in the season’s remaining performances of the Chamber Concert Series this spring. On March 14, classical guitarist William Feasley will be performing his “Spring Sonatas” at the museum, which is one of several stops on his international tour. This free event is open to the public; doors open at 6:30pm and the performance begins promptly at 7pm. According to Hileman, the last concert of the season will feature a soprano and mezzo-soprano on April 11. A one-day summertime festival is planned for later this year, as well as a celebration of the retirement of Dr. Livingston Alexander, president of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, who was instrumental in securing Horne’s archives for Bradford. Hileman encourages those interested in the museum’s exhibits and events to visit www. marilynhorne.org, where they can sign up for the museum’s online newsletter. The museum, which is located at 2 Marilyn Horne Way, is open daily and admission is free. Hours of operation are Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm and Sunday from 11am-4pm. The café is also open daily and serves a variety of delicious pastries, specialty coffees and lighter fare.
