Want the BEST Massage? Want the BEST Facial? Well now you have our number :) By Mary Heyl In 1979, Tony Dolan, a pharmacist in Bradford, Pennsylvania, wanted to start a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society during a time of year that isn’t normally associated with outdoor fundraisers - winter. Forty years later, Tony’s children, Betsy and Mike Dolan, have continued his tradition through what is now called the Tony Dolan Memorial Ski for Cancer event, the longest running fundraiser for the ACS in the state of Pennsylvania.

Dolan was a board member and past president of the ACS when they had a local office in Bradford. “He was looking for ways to raise money for the ACS, and there’s really not much to do in the winter,” Betsy explained. “So he thought if people could cross country ski to raise money, it would be a great way to be outdoors and raise money through a different type of fundraiser.” This year’s event takes place on Saturday, January 26th at the Westline Inn in Westline, PA (travel Rte. 219 south of Bradford). Participants of all ages and abilities can cross country ski, hike, snowshoe or even pull their children in a sled on the Kinzua Valley Trail. Each year, the Jamestown Cycle Shop brings a trailer full of skis for people to borrow if they do not have their own. Participants can travel as far as they would like on the trail, which is approximately six miles long. During the weeks leading up to the fundraiser, participants gather pledges from friends and family, and first and second place prizes are awarded to the teams and individuals who raise the most money. Prizes are also awarded to the youngest and oldest skiers. Over the past 40 years, the annual fundraiser has raised over $300,000 for the ACS. Nearly everyone has been affected by cancer in some way, whether personally or through the diagnosis of a family member or friend. This event gives participants the opportunity to recognize those loved ones during the fundraiser through purchasing memorial signs. Betsy explained, “A lot of people will go out on the trail to see a loved one’s sign. It’s just a nice memorial, a reminder, when you’re walking the trail of just how important this fundraiser is. You see the names of people who have passed away, and it’s just kind of a heartwarming day.” Speaking of warmth, there will be a bonfire at the trailhead for participants to enjoy, along with hot chocolate and coffee. Beginning at noon inside the Westline Inn, there will be a pig roast with potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans and more. The cost is $10 for a pork sandwich, side and beverage, or purchase a sandwich only for $8. “We have live music with Jim Copeland from the band Second Act,” Betsy said. “He’s done this for us for years for free. He’s an awesome part of the community and really cares about what we do.” Participants can begin registering for Ski for Cancer at 9am on the day of the event or register in advance online at http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/CommunityFundraisingPages/ CFPCY19NER?pg=entry&fr_id=93445. However, Betsy said people can join the fun any time after 9am and participate at their own pace throughout the day. The fundraiser includes lots of fun activities throughout the day and concludes at approximately 4pm. “It’s a great day – lots of camaraderie with family and friends, and opportunities to win some great prizes!” Betsy pointed out. JANUARY IS THE PERFECT TIME TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW By Spencer Timkey

LEARN A SNOWSPORT MONTH Holiday Valley Offering Half Price Beginner Packages

‘YOUR TURN’ WOMEN’S SKI CLINIC January 24-25th with Lisa Densmore Ballard

Stop wondering how much fun it is to ski or snowboard and come do it! January is Learn a Snowsport Month, and Holiday Valley will offer half price beginner ski and snowboard packages throughout the entire month. Get instruction from the Snow Pros and realize what you’ve been missing out on!

The 6th Annual ‘Your Turn’ Women’s Ski Clinic returns to Holiday Valley January 24-25th, giving intermediate to advanced lady skiers a chance to clinic and get better. Renowned women’s ski instructor Lisa Densmore Ballard spearheads this ladies-only clinic, providing a lifetime of instruction and experience to enhance the overall session.

As a nationwide initiative, Learn a Snowsport month encourages folks to get out on the hill and experience just how much fun it is to enjoy winter. If you stay at The Inn at Holiday Valley mid-week, you’ll get a free learn to ski/snowboard package. And on January 11th, everyone is encouraged to come learn to ski or ride on National Learn to Ski and Snowboard Day - for just $25.

“Lisa is an extremely calm person with an awesome demeanor,” said Allie Doro, Holiday Valley’s Snowsports Director. “She takes the stress level out of the day, but pushes you to try new things without going too far out of your comfort zone. She skis with each of the groups, but when she’s not with the group, she communicates really well with our instructors so everyone is on the same wavelength.”

At Holiday Valley, the month brings in over 1,000 new skiers and snowboarders for learn to ski/learn to ride packages. And in 2016, they participated in “The World’s Largest Ski and Snowboard Lesson,” where multiple resorts banded together in an attempt to break the world record … they didn’t break the record but over 6,000 people across the country learned to ski or snowboard on that one day!

Ballard, a former member of the United States Ski Team, has dedicated her life to helping people - specifically, women - feel better on their skis. Since the inception of the nationwide Your Turn clinics, she has taught and interacted with over 6,000 skiers (that’s just in these clinics; that number is far higher with all the other things she’s involved in!)

“We’re trying to get as many people introduced positively to the sport as we can,” said Allie Doro, Holiday Valley’s Snowsports Director. “With something like this, we take three ‘have to have’ things - rental, lesson and lift ticket - and make it super affordable. Hopefully people come out and surprise themselves and love it.”

Sign up for this year’s ski clinic at Holiday Valley and here’s what you can expect … The days begin with breakfast and an overview on the best way to select ladies-specific ski equipment. Anymore, product is so good and so tailored to women, it’s important to get the right gear that fits your particular skillset. Speaking of, you can pick up your demo skis before you head to the hill. A group skiing/video is next, before analysis and lunch.

A half price package during January gets you a lesson, rental and lift ticket for the School Haus area. You’ll also get a Rip 19 Card - a card with deals from Holiday Valley and surrounding shops. If you love the lesson and want to come back any time through Dec. 31, 2019, you can use your Rip Card for a 25% discount.

“She speaks on proper bootfitting, skis, and what you should be looking for before you go to buy,” Doro said. “The clinic is awesome because you can really get yourself dialed in. Your days will be full of information, skiing and meeting new people. One of the most important aspects of this clinic is the camaraderie you’ll build with fellow women skiers.”

“Especially in places where lift tickets are $200 for the day, this is an awesome deal,” Doro said. “It’s a really inexpensive way to get out on the hill.”

“This whole thing is designed for you to not feel intimidated,” Doro continued. “If you’re not comfortable skiing or trying new things with your family or your husband, this is an opportunity to push yourself and get better and have more fun on the snow.”

Learn to Ski/Learn to Ride is valid for adult lessons only (ages 12 and up), except for Learn to Ski & Snowboard Day, where it’s ages 6 and up. Learn to Ski/Ride night lessons are available for ages 8 and up. For more information on the Learn to Ski/Learn to Ride Day, or on Learn a Snowsport Month, head to www.holidayvalley.com/learn or stop by Holiday Valley’s Creekside Lodge.

TONY DOLAN SKI FOR CANCER cont. from page 03 is specific to the date of the fundraiser. Other raffle prizes include a handcrafted birdhouse, luxurious blankets and a Michael Kors purse and wallet.

Sign-ups are happening now, and it’s $295 for the full monty, which includes the clinic, breakfast, lunch, demos, video breakdowns and more. Discounted lift tickets and lodging rates are available for those of you that want to come and make a trip of it. For more information or to sign up, head to www.holidayvalley.com/womenskiclinic.

This Trek Marlin 5, donated by Just Riding Along Bike Shop, will be raffled off during the event.

One of this year’s most sought after prizes is a Trek Marlin 5 bike donated by Just Riding Along Bike Shop of Bradford. Owner Pete Dzirkalis is a regular participant in the fundraiser and has been donating a bike for the past 10 years. Raffle tickets for the bike, which retails at $550, will be sold throughout the day for $5 each or three for $10. Tickets are also available now at Just Riding Along and Ott & McHenry Pharmacy, 102 Main Street in Bradford. “It’s really a great day,” said Pete. “It’s held rain, snow or shine, so if there’s not enough snow, people can walk or ride their bikes.” Even if it does snow, Dzirkalis often rides his bike in the event and is looking forward to another great year. Cyclists can set up an appointment to have their bikes serviced this winter by calling the shop at 814-363-9101. Betsy is excited for the 40th year of the fundraiser, and thanks the Kinzua Valley Trail Club for helping out and maintaining the bonfire at the trailhead. “This trail is the best kept secret,” according to Betsy. “There’s a beautiful creek that runs beside it. It’s a well-maintained trail, and this day is a great time for people to see how beautiful it is.”

For more information on this year’s Tony Dolan Memorial Ski for Cancer, follow the event name on Facebook or contact Betsy or Mike Dolan at Ott & McHenry Pharmacy at 814-362-3827.

TH E SCIENCE OF SNOWMAKIN G

When Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate, Holidy Valley’s snowmakers assisted by a world-class automated snowmaking system - answer the call Photos: DAN ALDRICH view/purchase aerial prints at www.aldrichaerialphotography.com

By Spencer Timkey Inside a nondescript garage adjacent to the Training Center at Holiday Valley, air compressors hum, radios cackle and TV monitors show happy skiers and snowboarders loading and unloading onto chairlifts. Jeff Clancy, leaning back in a computer chair, keeps a watchful eye on the 60” monitor showing a satellite image of the resort. “Everything can be controlled from this room,” he explains, eyes scanning across the hundreds of dots that line the ski runs on the image. “And if we wanted, the entire system could run itself.” Clancy, Holiday Valley’s snowmaking supervisor, is referencing the HKD Automated Snowmaking System. We’re in the control room with snowmaker Kurt Rowland, and this is where the magic happens. Guns are turned on or off, on-hill weather centers measure humidity and wind direction, and problems can be dealt with swiftly as soon as they arise. From front to back, it’s an incredible marriage of technology, information and blue collar, hands-getting-dirty work. Have you ever wondered how snow is made? It’s a far cry from flipping a switch when temperatures dip below 32º. In fact, that couldn’t be further from what happens. At its core, snowmaking is an art, and a science. When the weather gives us cold temperatures but no natural snow, it’s the snowmakers that save our hide. “Three and a half acre-feet of snow an hour is our output at maximum capacity,” Clancy says. “We have two reservoirs of water - one across Route 219 (by the golf course) and Spruce Lake that we pull from, which gives us the luxury of rarely running out. There are three pump houses, with the two main ones near The Wall. Water used for snowmaking runs through lines over the headwall or along Catwalk to access the rest of the resort.” When “patch” snowmaking needs to happen (dedicating a number of guns to patch up thin spots on certain runs), the water pulls from across the street. But for the aptly-named Blitz when temperatures plummet in late November and early December and it’s all systems go to get the resort open - the water comes from the 67-million-gallon Spruce. “We add Snomax at the pump houses before the water distributes across the resort,” Clancy says. “Snomax is a snow inducer - it raises the freezing temperature of water, allowing us to make snow when the weather is warmer. The ratio of Snomax to water remains the same no matter how much water we’re pumping. The pump houses know to adjust accordingly.” While snow can be made when it’s 28º all the way to -28º (both numbers represent degrees in Fahrenheit, eh!) the optimal temperature ranges between 10º and 15º. HKD’s guns allow for different types of snow to be made. When it’s in the high-20s, it’s very wet. When it’s sub-zero, it’s very fine. But when the temperatures hover in the mid-teens, it gives the snowmakers some leeway. “If you’re running at maximum capacity when it’s -20º, the risks increase significantly,” Clancy said, referencing things such as guns breaking or electrical outages. “But we have no issues running guns when it’s 12º and having you (Clancy points at me) snowboard through them, because at that point, it’s a very fine powder that’s nice to rip on.” Remember in school when they told you no two snowflakes are the same? For the white gold that falls from the sky, that rings true. Not in snowmaking. Snowflakes from guns are all the same - and that’s by design. Creating a consistent surface for skiers and snowboarders is of the utmost importance. When the system maxes out at Holiday Valley, over 230 guns blaze. And of the 550 total guns the resort has on-hill, 331 run on the automated system. A recent NYSERDA grant allowed Holiday Valley to purchase an additional 107 Impulse Tower guns, which will run manually this season before being absorbed into the overall automated system. The Massachusetts-based HKD, founded in 1971 by Herman Dupré, supplies the majority of the resort’s snowmaking

guns, including hydrants, hoses and the PC-based HKD Tracker computer software. Over the past 46 years, the resort has reinvested over $13 million into its snowmaking capabilities. “At the beginning of the season, if we’ve got optimal temperatures, we can have the entire system maxed out and running in about an hour,” Clancy said. “If we had to, we could do it in about half that time. But when you start flipping switches all at once and water starts pumping every which way, you’re jeopardizing it. If a line breaks, it can really mess up our day. So we ease into it. Before automation, it might take us 3 to 4 hours to get the entire system up.” From his seat, Clancy begins navigating through the HKD software. On the giant screen, you see the gray dots - each representing a gun - and the 8 on-hill weather centers with real time information. Recently, the software upgraded to not only include all of the automated guns, but every gun at the resort. The guns connected to the automated system can be turned on and off from this seat. The guns not connected can’t be turned on, but they can be monitored. “Let’s take Bear Cub,” Clancy says, referencing one run not yet on the automated system. “I can monitor all of the information, and when someone out there turns them on, I just mark them as “on” here on the computer. That allows us to gather a substantial amount of information we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to.” Information and communication are critical aspects. Clancy needs to be able to see what’s running, what’s not, and where his best windows are. For instance, each weather center gives dry bulb and wet bulb. Dry bulb is the actual temperature, while wet bulb is the relative temperature with humidity. Wet bulb gives the snowmakers a much more accurate temperature reading, as humidity plays a major role in snowmaking and the quality of the snow made. “Some European resorts go full automation, meaning they set the parameters at the beginning of the season and just let it ride,” Clancy said. “We don’t do that here, because we want to have full control over what’s happening. There are too many variables and too many things that could go wrong to have the computer do it all season long by itself.” A majority of the guns at Holiday Valley are HKD’s Impulse, which are 30 feet tall and 120 pounds. The Impulse runs at 120 CFM (cubic feet of air per minute) in its first two selections, then 30 CFM its next two selections. These are different from the SV10 guns on Yodeler and School Haus, where each selection is 120 CFM. Layman’s terms: the 1st selection is less water, the 4th is most. The SV10 can make more snow faster because of the permanently higher CFM output (it’s stuck on high air). “Most of the bonding - the actual making of the snow - happens externally,” Clancy said. “it’s called external nucleation. The high pressure water comes out of the nozzle and the air interrupts it, and the water molecules smash together. The newer guns, like the Impulse, do a lot of the work internally. Each year, the guns get more and more efficient.” When you begin to think about it, the snowmaking capabilities at Holiday Valley truly are astounding. From the manmade Spruce Lake to the installation of the guns to the know-how of working the software, it takes a crew as tight as Clancy’s to run it safely and efficiently. Even with the East Coast’s largest automated snowmaking system and the most energy efficient one in the country, at the end of the day it’s the product that matters the most. “We love what we do, because we love when we see people out there enjoying it,” Clancy said. “We take a lot of pride in our work. Without knowing what the season is going to bring in terms of natural snowfall, we’re always prepared.” If you see a snowmaker out and about, be sure to buy them a beer. And celebrate with them at Lords of Snow, the snowmaker’s appreciation party held each spring at Villaggio. More information on Holiday Valley’s snowmaking system can be found at www.holidayvalley.com.

TASTE TEST

SNOWED-IN’S FLAVORS OF THE MONTH THE GIAN

GLAZED PORK TENDERLOIN

Welcome to breakfast at the Ashford Junction Diner, Ellicottville’s ONLY diner, where you can surely fill up on staple breakfast foods ... and a few one-of-a-kind creations. This here is called THE GIAN. Some call it the GIANT without the T. It is a dish that the owners’ son, Giancarlo, concocted one weekend morning. It features homemade hash, sausage and a cheese biscuit smothered in their signature sausage gravy and served over homefried potatoes. Just an FYI: most people cannot finish this dish, so if you’re looking for something to carry you through the day, this is the perfect option for you!

For the month of January, John Harvard’s is featuring one of their newest menu creations. Grilled pork tenderloin medallions are topped with spinach, goat cheese, and finished with a local maple syrup and blueberry demi-glace, served with butternut squash puree. Pair with 1000 Stories Zinfandel and this dinner will be just what you need after a long day on the slopes! Conveniently ski or ride in, enjoy a fantastic meal, and be back on the mountain in no time to relish the wonderful conditions at Holiday Valley! The John Harvard’s team is excited about all the new menu items this season, but this one is a real winner!

PULLED PORK POP-UP SPECIAL

THREE FOR $30

And you thought the only options at Bike and Bean were chicken, steak or veggie! Ellicottville’s local burrito shop is known for creating on-the-spot options, such as pulled pork or beef and cheese. Pay close attention, because if you don’t, you’ll miss these delicious pop-up specials! Check Bike and Bean’s Facebook page each morning to see if they’ve got something extraordinary on the menu for that day. While you’re in, grab a can of Yerba Mate from the cooler - a naturally caffeinated cold tea made from the nourishing leaves of the celebrated South American rainforest holly tree. Clean eating AND clean drinking!

Let’s get your Sunday and Monday nights in check! MSBB has declared these nights “Pizza Night”! The pizza pie pros are dishing up a 16” two topping pizza, 16 brick oven baked wings with your favorite sauce, and an order of their signature breadsticks for just $30 bucks! How’s that for an easy and delicious dinner? Whether it’s football, basketball or hockey you’re watching, leave the apron in the kitchen and kick back with custom made goodness, so that you can focus on what’s really important - the game.

YARD SALE

SPICY BLEU CHEESE BURGER

It’s ski season! Stop into the Winery of Ellicottville and pick up a few bottles of Yard Sale (how fitting!) The Yard Sale is a semi-sweet red blend crafted inhouse and is sure to please any wine lover’s palate! It features a tasteful pinch of fruit up front that mellows out for a nice finish. Enjoy with a casual lunch of burgers and pizza, or with a simple cheese and cracker platter after a day on the slopes! This wine has a great label and makes for a perfect hostess gift for the avid skier. Aprés anyone?

This 1/2 pound burger is made with fresh ground beef from Dom’s Butcher Block (located next door in the Washington Square) and topped with bleu cheese and sriracha sauce. Served with fresh cut fries and lettuce, tomato and onion. You can find it on Madigan’s lunch and dinner menus. Stop in and try their daily lunch special for $10 served with your choice of salad or their awesome homemade soup of the day! Lunch is served Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30am-2pm. Dinner served Friday and Saturday from 4-9pm.

WAGYU COULOTTE

THE GRINCH

The Silver Fox hands down serves up some of the best cuts of Wagyu/American Kobe beef in the area! What is it? Simply put: it is the finest quality of beef available in the United States. Highly prized for their rich flavor, Wagyu/Kobe cattle’s genetic predisposition yields a beef that contains a higher percentage of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids than typical beef. The combinations of these fats deliver a distinctive rich and tender flavor with intense marbling. It is arguably the most desired beef in the world, and lucky for us, we can enjoy it right here in Ellicottville!

The Katy’s crew keeps in the holiday spirit all through winter with festive drink specials that will warm you up after a thrilling day at the tubing park or following an afternoon of shopping Ellicottville’s unique boutiques. The Grinch is a tasty spin on white hot chocolate infused with creme de menthe and topped with whipped cream. For those with a need for caffeine, turn The Grinch into a Grinch Mocha with a shot of espresso. Better yet, make Katy’s your first stop in the morning and pair your preferred cup of Grinch with one of Katy’s signature breakfast creations - burritos, bagel sandwiches, traditional eggs and more.

The smudge stick is made up of herbs and sage. The sacred art or ritual of Smudging is used to bless, cleanse and heal the person or object being smudged. This ancient ceremony, burning of herbs, is to allow the smoke to clear the energy in your field, help combat negativity and bring blessings of renewal. The dried sage smoke changes the ionic composition of the air, and can have a direct effect on reducing stress responses.

Looking forward to that weekly unwinding bath you rely on for a clear mind? Take your personal time up a notch with a Detox Power Bath. By using a specific combination of salts, authentic essential oils, and 3 quarts of peroxide, soaking from the neck down promotes the body to rid itself of harmful daily toxins that can wear us out.

In a society that often favors online shopping and big box stores, Jodi Scanlan has managed to accomplish something that few entrepreneurs can do. Through several years of sharing her unique, handcrafted goods at craft and vendor shows, Scanlan created such a large following that opening a brick-and-mortar store was the next5” logical It hastall widestep. x 6.25” proven to be a very successful one, at that. In 2015, Scanlan began using her artistic talents to make handmade signs and other kinds of country decor, such as burlap wreaths, ornaments and floral designs. “I always made crafts and always liked being creative,” Scanlan reflected. “My daughter was getting married in 2016, and I wanted to make some extra money to cover the wedding. I started making things to sell at craft shows. After we got through her wedding, I just enjoyed it so much, so I kept doing it.” Many may recognize Scanlan’s work from craft shows throughout the area, as well as the annual W.I.L.M.A. craft show held each Fall at the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds in Little Valley. “A lot of times people would ask where our store was if they wanted to get something else,” Scanlan said of the growing demand for her work. “People would want a gift, and then I was digging through totes, trying to find something. I realized it’s just much easier if I have place that’s set up where you can stop and you can look and see what you want.” Scanlan’s husband built her a 12-foot by 24-foot shed right next to their home, which is also located near Scanlan’s other business, Schubert Enterprises on Route 353 between Little Valley and Salamanca, which she co-owns with her brother, Randy Schubert. There, they make commercial signs, banners, shirts, vinyl decals and more. However, Scanlan’s most creative work - her handmade signs and gifts - are beautifully displayed in her newly built store, Rustic Originals, just a stone’s throw away. “It’s a country rustic building, and it’s got a little porch on it, which I love,” Scanlan explained. “It’s all done in barnwood on the inside, and it’s heated, plus ceiling fans, track lighting and country rustic decor have really made it just perfect for what I needed.” One of Scanlan’s most in-demand items are her handmade signs, which she makes with the help of her husband. “My husband cuts the signs, and I stain them. I have all kinds of signs with several sayings in the store, but if people want something special, they just tell me,” said Scanlan. “I work up a proof and send it to them. Sometimes it becomes a new sign in the shop, and sometimes it’s just an original!” In addition to Scanlan’s signs, wreaths, ornaments and other country decor items, her friends have contributed their own unique items (and talents) to Rustic Originals. “I have friends who make cards, soaps, bath bombs and other wooden pieces,” Scanlan listed. “Most everything is handmade, including the winter mittens made with recycled sweaters that are fleece-lined. They go really fast - people really like them!” Scanlan’s store also carries a variety of dip and dressing mixes, as well as Rada cutlery, coffee mugs, candles and more. Since December 1, when the store first opened, Rustic Originals has enjoyed lots of foot traffic, and Scanlan looks forward to watching the business grow. “I plan on having the store change with the seasons,” she explained. “ I’m going to be taking down the Christmas items, building new things and always changing things. This spring, there will be items for the garden and porches to decorate. We’re doing furniture pieces coming up here soon. We’re always thinking of new stuff to make!” The store, located at 5111 Route 353 just over the hill from Ellicottville, is open Wednesday through Friday from 3-9pm and Saturday from 10am-4pm. Customers can follow Rustic Originals on Facebook or call 716-257-2565 to learn more or to set up an appointment to shop outside their regular business hours.

“CHICKS WITH HITS”

INTERVIEW: COUNTRY MUSIC LEGENDS TERRI CLARK, PAM TILLIS AND SUZY BOGGUSS BRING THEIR HITS TO SENECA ALLEGANY RESORT & CASINO THIS FEBRUARY

...................... SATURDAY | FEBRUARY 9 @ 7pm By Melanie Hulick Kicking off October 2017 these ladies began their tour, Chicks with Hits, and have played dates through 2018, and we are thrilled they are continuing this unique show in 2019 making a stop at the Seneca Allegany Events Center on Saturday, February 9th. The architect of the show is a female powerhouse of country music, Terri Clark, who had wanted to put this all-female acoustic tour together to showcase the music, and add in the stories behind the songs, with some fun and laughter thrown in for an intimate evening performance like no other. Clark’s vision came to fruition when friends and country music legends Pam Tillis and Suzy Bogguss joined in … and the rest - as they say - is pure country music history. There is no shortage of material to draw from with 36 Top 10 singles between the three singer/songwriters, who have garnered numerous country music nominations and awards along the way to add to their highly acclaimed collection that has earned them their spots in country music history and in the hearts of fans all over the world. I was fortunate enough to catch up with Pam Tillis to ask a couple of fun questions to gain a little insight on this country music superstar. As far as this show/ tour, Tillis had this to offer … “Our music blends beautifully; we all have an appreciation for traditional, folk and country rock and share many of the same influences. Between the harmonies and the humor, it’s gonna be pretty darn fun.” Three stars, three guitars, singing together all night. Get your tickets now to this one-of-a-kind country music show.

......................

Tickets to Chicks with Hits on Feb. 9th are $35 and can be purchased through wwww.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany) or directly through Ticketmaster.com.

A Conversation with Pam Tillis HULICK: Who were your musical idols/influences growing up? TILLIS: Early on it was my dad Mel Tillis of course. I had so many … like Judy Garland, Hank Williams, the Beatles, Flatts & Scruggs, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Gladys Knight … too many to name them all. HULICK: Where were you the first time you heard your song on the radio? TILLIS: It was November 1991, I was going down Old Hickory Blvd. with my son in the car and I literally had to pull into the parking lot of a Quick Save convenient store. We cried and hugged each other. HULICK: What is your favorite album of yours and why? TILLIS: I love the “Sweethearts Dance” album … that’s maybe the best … but “Tillis Sings Tillis”, my tribute to my Dad, is a close second. HULICK: Who do you listen to these days? TILLIS: Everything. My favorite thing to do is use the app on my phone called Shazam, and when I’m out and about there’s always something playing that I get curious about like Dawes, Wilco, Joy Williams, the Revivalist … the last few things I checked out in the app … and we listen to old vinyl at our cabin in the woods … like Tea for the Tillerman … we make cocktails and marvel at the beauty of analogue. HULICK: Any new projects in the works? TILLIS: I have an album that I am two thirds through with. We start recording again in January. HULICK: Do you have a Western New York or Buffalo connection? TILLIS: I’ve played so many great towns in Western New York. Great old theaters like in Jamestown where Lucille Ball is from, Chautauqua … I like learning about the history of the cities I visit. It’s such a different feeling than the south but the distinct flavors of the places I go are what make travel interesting. HULICK: Describe for me what your best day would be like. TILLIS: My best day? Hanging out at our farm with our dogs, gardening, walking by the creek, looking at wildflowers, fixing a great dinner then sitting by the fire pit as the stars come out. I’m pretty basic.

TRAIL CENTRAL

2019 ... A YEAR FULL OF JOY

The Chinese Zodiac predicts 2019 as a year of fortune, good luck, friendship, love, and an auspicious year with success in all the spheres of life. In 2019 make it a goal to spend more time enjoying a variety of activities with family and friends in the Allegheny National Forest Region of northwestern Pennsylvania. EXPERIENCE THE KINZUA SKY WALK IN WHITE A wintertime visit to the Kinzua Sky Walk puts you in touch with both the creative genius of the original Kinzua Viaduct - once the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world - and the beauty of the Kinzua Gorge, one of Mother Nature’s masterpieces. The Kinzua Sky Walk offers spectacular views as you stroll out 624 feet, at a height of 225 feet above the Kinzua Gorge. At the end of the skywalk, there is a partial glass bottom overlook which offers a stunning view of the steel structure of the skywalk, and the frozen valley floor frosted in ice and snow. The Kinzua Sky Walk is open from 8am to dusk daily. The Kinzua Bridge State Park Visitors Center, located at the park, is open during the winter Monday through Saturday from 8am-4pm. Inside the center you will discover many interactive exhibits honoring the innovative creativity of the builders of the original 1882 viaduct, plus other inventions from this part of Pennsylvania such as the Holley carburetor. Many of the exhibits are interactive and all are suitable for family exploration. The park and the skywalk are both located at 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. The park, the skywalk, and the visitors center all offer FREE admission.

NEW THIS SEASON: KNOX & KANE RAIL TRAIL A brand new 3.8-mile trail from the Kinzua Bridge State Park to the village of Mt. Jewett has just opened. The trail is suitable for hiking, biking, snow-biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. The Knox & Kane Rail Trail has a crushed limestone surface. It is a fun trail to try out the new snow-biking as the trail has only slight inclines. The trail bisects beautiful forestlands offering a pristine escape from the hustle and bustle of a life full of smartphones, computers and constant interruptions. This is the first northern section of trail completed along this rail trail corridor. When the full trail is completed it will stretch across four counties, from the Kinzua Bridge State Park to Clarion, Pennsylvania … a total of 78 miles! Trailhead parking can be found behind the Mt. Jewett Borough office at Center Street and Peterson Street in Mt. Jewett, or at the Kinzua Bridge State Park.

DATE NIGHT: DINNER AND A MOVIE To begin your auspicious year of love, plan to take advantage of the Date Night Special on Wednesday evening at Beefeaters Restaurant. Their Date Night Special includes dinner for two at the restaurant, and two movie tickets for the Main Street Moviehouse. The special pricing for Beefeaters’ Date Night Special is only $30 for both the dinner and the movie tickets for two. Beefeaters Restaurant is located in a beautifully restored Carnegie Library, within Bradford’s National Historic District. Dine by the fireplace or choose another intimate table for two in one of the two elegant dining rooms. The Date Night Special’s menu offers a selection of an 8 oz. steak, meatloaf or hand-carved turkey dinner. Each dinner comes with tossed salad, choice of dressing, dinner rolls, potato and vegetables. Beverages and dessert may be purchased separately. The two movie tickets, to be used the same evening as your dinner, are redeemable at the Main Street Moviehouse, which is an easy stroll from the restaurant.
