SHRED THE STIGMA OF ADDICTION: SkiScape event returns to the slopes of HoliMont

By Mary Heyl Underage alcohol and drug abuse is affecting thousands of area students and their families, and is now the most serious public health threat facing adolescents in Western New York. While the spread of addiction may seem overwhelming, you can help by partnering with Kids Escaping Drugs and their annual SkiScape at HoliMont fundraiser on February 20, 2018. Event organizer Suzanne DiMico encourages everyone to “Shred the Stigma of Addiction,” which is this year’s theme, by raising money and awareness to help adolescents and their families get on the road to recovery.

NEW Look, NEW Location! Find us inside the Tamarack Club at Holiday Valley Resort!

6447 Holiday Valley Road • Ellicottville, NY

Kids Escaping Drugs was founded in Buffalo in 1987 to provide a treatment facility for chemically dependent adolescents (ages 12 to 20). KED built their first residential facility in 1990; prior to this time, there were no treatment facilities for adolescents in Western New York. Adolescents who suffered from addiction were either treated in an adult facility or not treated at all. Since then, KED has built two more residential facilities and added Academic and Resource Centers, which house classrooms, a gymnasium, and the program’s offices. According to DiMico, “We serve adolescents in all eight counties of Western New York, but we can accept [into our residential programs] a child from anywhere in New York State.”

While KED hosts other fundraisers throughout the region during the year, SkiScape is the only event that takes place in Cattaraugus County. According to DiMico, the event, which was started 20 years ago, included a race component but has now evolved to include a range of other activities. Participants can ski, snowboard, and take part in the basket raffles, contests, lift games and more. Individuals of all ages are invited to participate; the $75 registration fee includes breakfast, lunch, a lift pass and an event t-shirt. “Since HoliMont is a private club, this is a great chance for everyone - members and non-members - to ski or snowboard all day at this beautiful resort!” said DiMico.

This year, SkiScape specifically benefits KED’s Face2Face Program, which focuses on outreach and awareness in the community through peer-to-peer interactions in schools and in the workplaces. The educational program, which was started in 2008, involves students in recovery visiting area schools to share their stories and reach out to peers who may be in the earliest stages of experimentation. Face2Face also involves a workplace component in which parents of children in recovery can speak to other adults and professionals in the community. “Our goal is to saturate the area with information,” explained DiMico, “so that we can inform students and their families about the drug epidemic before substance abuse treatment is necessary.” “Unfortunately, many don’t get the help they need because they feel trapped by the stigma of addiction,” said DiMico, “but the truth is that nearly everyone is affected by addiction, either personally or through friends or family.” With the importance of awareness in mind, participants are asked to dedicate their first run (either publicly or privately) to someone who lost his/her life to drug addiction or to celebrate someone in recovery. There will also be a Memory Wall, where participants can place notes and photos in memory of friends and family who have struggled with addiction. There are lots of ways to get involved with SkiScape, whether you’d like to participate as a skier or a sponsor. Participants can register at http://www.501auctions.com/SkiScape and get their own participant page, where friends, family and colleagues can sponsor them. There are different levels of fundraising incentives, which include gift cards, water bottles, blankets and more. Last year’s SkiScape raised over $20,000 with nearly 200 participants! The website also has a Sponsorship page for businesses to support SkiScape at different levels. SkiScape on-site registration is from 8:00-9:30am on Tuesday, February 20 and skiing/ snow-boarding takes place until 4:30pm, with lunch served between 12:30 and 2:00pm. For every $100 of support, KED can facilitate an Early Intervention for an at-risk student, and for every $250 of support, KED can bring a Face2Face panel presentation to a local school. Participate or donate to a skier today … because every dollar counts!

HOLIDAY VALLEY TUBING PARK IS OPEN!

None of that fussy turning … this is all about speed! After a day on the slopes, you can top off your fun meter with a trip to the Holiday Valley Tubing Park. Race down the 900-foot lanes and experience the exhilaration of tubing. Once you’re at the bottom, hook up to the tow and enjoy the ride back to the top. The best part: EVERYONE can enjoy the thrill of tubing! It’s an activity you can do with your whole group - whether it’s work, a birthday party or your family. It’s fun, and you can do it together! Tubing enables everyone to have a good time regardless of age or fitness. For children under 7 years and 42 inches, there’s a special Little Tubers area where the hill is a bit shorter and the speed a bit slower. For those cold winter days, there’s a giant, outdoor bonfire pit and an indoor warming hut with snack bar (hot cocoa please!) and fireplace so you can warm up between rides. The warming hut also houses bathrooms and a small retail shop (in case you forgot your gloves or hat, or want some handwarmers). Visitors can also enjoy the on-site ice skating rink (weather permitting). The Holiday Valley Tubing Co. is located on Route 242 at Bryant Hill Road, just 3 miles east of the Village of Ellicottville. There are 2 tows servicing 20+ tubing lanes, with 3 of those lanes designated as “group lanes” where you can hook together with other tubers (SUPER FUN!). A free shuttle is available during operating hours beginning Dec. 26th with pickup at Holiday Valley’s Resort Services Center turn-around and at the Inn at Holiday Valley. The tubing park is open Thursdays and Fridays from 4:30-9pm, Saturdays from 11am-9pm, and Sundays from 11am6pm. The park is also open during Christmas Week, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Week and Canadian March Break. A two-hour pass is $18.50 per person; a three-hour pass is $20.50. Or you can go all day for $25.75. Call 716-699-TUBE (699-8823) for group rates, team building or birthday parties. An adult must accompany any child under the age of 10. The well-dressed tuber has plenty of layers to stay warm, warm boots (no ski boots) plus a hat and neck warmer or face mask if it is really chilly. It’s not a bad idea to wear your goggles and a helmet. Helmets are available to rent for $5. To learn more about the Holiday Valley Tubing Company, log onto www.holidayvalley.com/tubing or call 716-699-TUBE.

WINTER BLUES WEEKEND | January 19-20 | Downtown Winters in Ellicottville are known mostly for the slopes. Skiing and boarding surely prevail. What makes Ellicottville one of the most sought-after places to go for winter fun is not only the slopes, but what can be done when Jack Frost has nipped at your nose and the slopes have worn you out. Why head back to the condo and rest when there’s excitement taking place downtown in the village? Come Jan. 19-20, restaurants and bars throughout the village will offer some of the region’s best Blues bands, all free for your listening pleasure. One performance you’ll want to make sure you catch is the Mick Hayes Band, appearing Saturday, Jan. 20 upstairs at Madigan’s (36 Washington St.) from 6-10pm. Mick Hayes has spent most of his career playing in and between Nashville, L.A., and Atlanta, until his love of his hometown just outside of Buffalo brought him back to Western New York. A visit to his website (www.mickhayesmusic.com) unveils his passion for music and the familiar yet innovative sound he possesses, influenced by styles from across America … “His voice takes the forefront with influences from soul, blues, funk, and rock & roll while his guitar that has been under his arm since he was seven years old, is like an extension of his own voice and story. Mick has played with countless greats, not the least of which Stevie Wonder - who after hearing Mick, asked if he would join him on stage to sing with him and add a little harmonica to Mick’s “Those 3 Words.” He has also been billed alongside great artists such as Deep Purple, the Doobie Brothers, Peter Frampton, Dickie Betts, Delbert McClinton, Robin Trower, Cheap Trick, Steve Vai, Joe Bonamassa, Najee, Los Lonely Boys and many others. Having been recognized by The Grammy Awards Committee in 2016 in the “Best Traditional R&B Performance” and “Best R&B Song” categories for his single, “For Realski’s,” Mick is looking forward to what the future will bring. As for the weekend of Jan. 20th, his fan base will bring him back to Ellicottville, where he will no doubt entertain a crowd during Ellicottville’s Winter Blues Weekend. The 2018 Winter Blues Weekend music schedule is filling up quickly and can be accessed at www.ellicottvilleny.com. Check back often for updates and plan your Blues stops around town.

snowTRENDS All eyes on PyeongChang as the World’s Best Athletes gather for the 2018 Winter Olympics By Spencer Timkey It all comes down to 16 days in February. Athletes from around the world train their entire lives for the chance at one shining moment of personal - and national - glory. From the major sports to the obscure ones, the world will tune in to see their nation’s best compete for gold medals and the coveted overall medal count. This winter, South Korea plays host to the 2018 Winter Olympics. The South’s proximity to a rogue North Korean state - and Kim Jong-Un’s propensity for sabre rattling - will certainly be on everyone’s mind. And while the IOC (International Olympic Committee) always seems to find itself mired in some sort of controversy, every Olympic gathering has a strong undertone of worldwide unity. But let’s leave the geopolitical issues of Asia for another piece. This is a story about the Olympics! One of the biggest stories to come out so far is the banning of Russian athletes from competing in the games for Russia. They can still compete, but it has to be under a neutral flag. The controversy came about after the IOC found evidence of multiple Russian athletes doping. Maybe they shouldn’t have been Putin those drugs in their bodies (I’ll see myself out).

In the 2014 Games, the United States won the overall medal count (28) while Norway won the gold medal count (11). In 2018, the U.S. is poised to do some damage on the podium. SNOWBOARDING: Snowboarding in the Olympics made its debut at the 1998 Games in Nagano, and since, has become a household sport. Halfpipe, slalom, boardercross and slopestyle are the disciplines, and you’ll recognize a lot of the names. The addition of slopestyle has shown the world more of what snowboarding is about - halfpipe is awesome, but it’s a discipline that not a lot of riders can master. While his prominence in the snowboard industry has fallen off, Shaun White remains one of the marquee names the IOC is marketing. When White is on, he’s unbeatable in the halfpipe. Look for him to bury his performance at the 2014 Sochi Games and reclaim the crown.

Slopestyle combines jumps and rails, where riders are judged on technicality of tricks. American and GNU Team Rider Jamie Anderson will probably nab gold. If you’ve ever seen Jamie ride, she is … really good at snowboarding. Other names to watch out for: Marcus Kleveland, Stale Sandbech, Mark McMorris, Chas Gouldemond. SKIING: One of the oldest events in the Winter Games, skiing has progressed to a point where the IOC thought it prudent to add slopestyle and halfpipe in as well. While you’ve probably seen Lindsey Vonn in every Olympic ad so far, don’t count out 22-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin. Shiffrin is the youngest slalom champion in Olympic history, nabbing gold in Sochi at just 18. Although suffering a knee injury last year, it’s never safe to count out American Ted Ligety. In slopestyle and halfpipe, Gus Kenworthy is a dual threat - he won silver at slopestyle’s inception in 2014. Rochester natives Jon and Chris Lillis have turned heads the last few years in aerials, so expect them to take some podiums. Other names to watch: Maddie Bowman, Ashley Caldwell, Julie Mancuso, Andrew Weibrecht. ICE HOCKEY: Much to the dismay of hockey fans everywhere, NHL players will not be going to South Korea this year. And that’s especially disappointing for this Sabre fan, since Jack Eichel most certainly would have been on that team. A silver lining, however, is that Team USA may finally be able to crack the code that is Team Canada. While household NHL names won’t be competing, there are plenty of up-and-coming youngsters you’ll want to watch. Olympic hockey rosters will be revealed during the 2nd intermission of the NHL’s Winter Classic. OTHER SPORTS TO WATCH: FIGURE SKATING! The amount of talent these skaters possess is borderline unbelievable. Full stride skating, then jumping/spinning 4 times before landing on their feet? Good figure skaters are awesome to watch - not to mention, the outfits are always on point. Couples skating might even be more impressive. South Korean Yuna Kim took silver in Sochi behind Russian Adelina Sotnikova, but could be a favorite for gold this year. SKELETON/BOBSLEIGH: Props to these athletes for the infinite courage they show ripping down an icy chute at Mach 10. Bobsleigh, consisting of four people in a sleigh all shifting their weight in unison, might be an Olympic favorite (major Cool Runnings nostalgia). And if the bobsleigh athletes are courageous, those competing in Skeleton are 10x more so. With nothing but a helmet, speed suit and sled, they push 80 mph - going headfirst. BIATHLON: The Biathlon, which takes its origins from hunters in Scandinavia, combines skiing and marksmanship. Cruising around on cross-country skis and shooting targets seem difficult enough separate, but combining them into one while racing other athletes seems kind of difficult. Oh, and the longest track is 20 kilometers. Tune in February 9-25!

A great wine for New Year’s Eve, birthdays, weddings, or any weekend apres get-together. Stop into the Winery and give it a try for yourself. They offer wine tastings daily.

The Public House has quickly proven to be a perfect fit in our ski town, with their mouth-watering menu, large selection of craft beer, and their all-around upbeat vibe. You can view their dinner menu online, but what we’re extra excited about is their Brunch menu! SAY YES! TO SABA TREAT YOUR TASTE BUDS TO AN INGREDIENT WHICH DELIGHTED EGYPTIAN PHARAOHS AND ROMAN EMPERORS By Chef Joshua McDowell

28 Monroe Street Downtown Ellicottville, NY 716-699-2537

Joshua McDowell is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts of Pittsburgh, PA. He carries a Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts and offers over 20 years of experience in the food service industry. He holds the position of Executive Chef at the Ellicottville Brewing Company.

CAST IRON BAKED BRIE AND SABA VINAIGRETTE WITH EBC LEMONGRASS WITTE Yes, yes, I know, most of us aren’t familiar with Saba. Well let me explain … it’s a very unique ingredient. This ingredient once delighted the taste buds of Egyptian pharaohs and Roman emperors alike. An ancient condiment brought back to life, it has an incredibly fruity flavor with notes of grapes, plums and raisins. Saba was created to avoid the pungency associated with traditional balsamic vinegars. Saba is a grape must reduction that adds a very caramelized grape flavor. You might be asking yourself, why do I need Saba? The reason behind its creation was the fact that most balsamic vinegars take a decade or more to fully age. Saba, unlike balsamic, is cooked, reducing the production time significantly.

FOR OUR RECIPE INGREDIENTS:

• 4-ounce fresh brie wheel • 1 shallot (thinly sliced) • 4 each whole cloves roasted garlic • 4 sprigs fresh thyme • 1 oz. Saba • 3 oz. Extra virgin olive oil • 5 each dried whole dates • 1 oz. toasted walnuts • ¼ loaf fresh baked French Bread (Get the good stuff, it’s worth it! I used a potato/rosemary bread for mine.) • Beer!

It’ll help if you have a 6-inch cast iron pan to bake the brie in, just because it looks super cool and rustic when served in cast iron. Quickly whisk the Saba and extra virgin olive oil; add the dried dates. Place brie wheel in cast iron pan on top of thyme sprigs. Top with roast garlic, sliced shallots, and Saba/date/oil mixture. Bake at 350° F for 8-10 minutes. (Our goal here is not to melt the brie, but to just soften it, and to marry the creaminess of the brie with the tang and fruit of the other ingredients.) Top with the toasted walnuts. Slice the “good” French bread, brush with butter and toast in oven. Add the beer to enhance your experience! EBC’s new Lemongrass Witte is perfect for this dish - a Belgian style Witte, light in color, medium body. It uses Canadian barley, American wheat, oats, coriander and orange peel. We also use lemongrass to give this beer a refreshing essence. It’s the perfect beer pairing thanks to the light citrus notes which accentuate the vigor of the Saba vinaigrette without overpowering the creamy luscious brie cheese. When you smear some of the brie on that tasty French bread crostini with all the fruity Saba tang, aromatic garlic/shallots, and earthiness of the walnuts, it’ll be sure to hit on all those happy little taste buds. A nice light “sip/gulp” of the beer will help the lactic acid build up in your legs from a long hard day of skiing or snowboarding … Happy winter, folks!

Welcome back Nidecker! After four years of not distributing in the U.S., Dekdebruns is excited to have Nidecker back in the store. This Swiss-based company has built a globally recognized reputation of quality snowboards since 1984, creating high-end all-mountain snowboards that were tested on the toughest of slopes - the Alps. In the men’s world, Dekdebruns carries a variety of models: the Play, Axis, Megalight, and Ultralight. For the ladies, they carry the Elle. And don’t forget about the lil’ rippers; the store offers the Prosper and Flake. Come check ‘em out!

Since the early 1900s, Pendleton Woolen Mills has honored America’s National Parks with a collection of distinctive park blankets, one of the first being Glacier National Park. Its markings and colors date back to the frontier trading posts. Traders would indicate the weight of the blanket offered in exchange for furs by holding up one finger for each pound. The original blankets incorporated three, four or five black stripes in the design, which indicated its value. Colors and variations have been adapted to reflect distinguishing characteristics of each park and blanket in the collection.

AROUND TOWN: INSPIRED BY THE GREAT OUTDOORS MIKE TRAINOR Rustic, Reclaimed ... and Everything in Between

THE BEAR PAW SHOPPE Allegany State Park makes its mark in downtown Ellicottville

Just as with anything, trends come and go; and in the world of furniture the trends seem to change seasonally. The most recent and prominent trend has been Reclaimed Wood favoring Barnboard.

With its numerous camping sites, two lakes, delicious restaurant and unique shops, Allegany State Park is a hotspot for visitors and Cattaraugus County residents alike. And now Ellicottville resident, John Marino, has brought the park to downtown Ellicottville! Just a few weeks ago, Marino, who owns and operates Allegany State Park’s gift shops and general stores, opened The Bear Paw Shoppe at 38 Washington Street just in time for ski season. “Our shops in the park have grown so much over the past six years, and I’m happy to bring some of this merchandise, plus lots of new items, to Ellicottville,” said Marino, who was very pleased with the store’s opening weekend December 15-16.

Quietly in the furniture scene for some time now has been Mike Trainor creating unique custom pieces. Originally from Tonawanda, Trainor moved to Mansfield (just outside of Ellicottville) about 18 years ago. His kids had gone off to college and he decided it was time to pursue his passion - custom furniture. “After a career in the world of contractors, it was a breath of fresh air to start designing and building what I wanted to.” Trainor has always been careful to evolve with his client base as he has made a transition from Rustic, live-edge work to reclaimed barnboard work. “You need to pay attention to what your client wants, notice what pieces are popular and selling, then go with it.” Trainor owned a shop in the Adirondacks for six years, living half of the year there and the other half in Mansfield. This experience gave him great insight to where he wanted to see his work evolve into. “I would have people traveling 60+ miles to come and see the store to find that perfect gift or piece for their home.” This past summer he built himself a workshop one hundred feet from his home. “It’s the worst commute ever,” Trainor joked. “Living in Mansfield I get the best of both worlds; if I want the hustle and bustle of people it’s just a quick trip over the hill, but if it is time to disconnect I can enjoy the serenity of my property.” (Writer’s note: Just another reason people are drawn to Ellicottville and the surrounding area.) “90% of my work is custom and no two pieces are the same.” Trainor builds everything from shelving to end tables to coffee tables, incorporating a sleek industrial vibe. “It is best to be versatile when clients’ tastes and trends change so frequently. My favorite is when they give me an idea and say run with it. I have many clients who afford me that luxury frequently.” “During the Holiday Season, it is always serving trays and ottoman trays that are the big sellers. With people coming into Ellicottville for the winter months, you must have that perfect tray for all the après hors d’oeuvres.” Trainor’s shop can be found at 6278 Hart Road. “I love it when people stop by and check out what I am working on. It gets them personally involved in the project. Having a client understand how the piece came to life is so rewarding.” Trainor is also happy to work within budgets; if you have a unique concept in mind, just ask and he will do what he is able to. Trainor can be reached via email at bmt1064@gmail.com, by phone at 716-861-5710 or find him on Facebook. You can also find Trainor’s works available for sale at Ameri-Can located on the main drag in downtown Ellicottville, phone 716-699-6690.

If it seems as though Marino’s store opened practically overnight, that’s because it did! “Honestly, it was a very fast turn-around between acquiring the location and opening,” explained Marino. “It really took place in about three weeks’ time.” Indeed, Marino signed the lease for the 600-square foot space during the third week of November; fortunately, the space did not need much work - just a fresh coat of paint on the exterior. Along with his hardworking staff from the park’s retail stores, Marino set up the store and opened just a few weeks later! “We’re happy with the place, and it’s the perfect location. I’m really glad to have a place for my employees during the winter season - they’re a wonderful staff.”

The store, which sits between Subway and Dom’s Butcher Block, is conveniently located downtown in the Washington Square Plaza to offer shoppers a variety of merchandise that can’t be found in other stores. “We carry some of our park visitors’ favorite items including the Bear Paw Fudge, candles and décor items, but we have new items too, such as Ellicottville clothing and souvenirs, cards and educational toys,” explained Marino. Marino and his staff have taken advantage of the store’s wall space to display a great variety of decorative signs, which are popular gift items.

Marino’s passion for the outdoors has been a life-long pursuit. While Marino has called Ellicottville home in recent years, he has also lived in the Catskills, where he and his sister own ski shops, and at Allegany State Park, where he has been involved since 1994. “Our shops in the park have grown tremendously over the past few years, with the biggest jump in gift item sales, such as candles and décor,” said Marino. Visitors to the new Bear Paw Shoppe can look forward to a fresh array of merchandise, as items from the park’s stores and the Ellicottville store will move back and forth. Marino is also looking forward to adding new merchandise to the Bear Paw Shoppe throughout the winter months.

Although activity in Ellicottville changes at the end of ski season, Marino is quick to add that the Bear Paw Shoppe will be open year ‘round, especially since spring and summer are the busiest seasons at Allegany State Park. “There has always been a lot of back-and-forth traffic between the park and Ellicottville during the summer, as campers like to explore the area and many locals come to the park for the day,” Marino explained.

In fact, the growth of Allegany State Park will likely impact Ellicottville and increase traffic to Marino’s new store. “The park has about 800 properties, including campsites and cabins, that visitors can rent, which means we average anywhere from 2,500 to 3,500 visitors per night in the summer. There will be fifteen more cottages added to the Quaker side of the park that will be ready in May, which means even more visitors!”

For the winter season, the Bear Paw Shoppe will be open from 10am-5pm Sunday through Thursday, and 10am-7pm Friday and Saturday. Hours will be modified for the summer months, but Marino encourages readers to follow the Bear Paw Shoppe on Facebook for news and updates. “I love the snow, I love to ski, and I love Ellicottville,” said Marino, “and I’m happy to now be in business here.” Check out Ellicottville’s newest store and enjoy a taste of the park without having to leave town!

2018 CASINO CONCERT KICK-OFF SENECA ALLEGANY ENTERS THE NEW YEAR WITH COMEDY, COUNTRY, AND ROCK FOR TICKETS: www.SenecaCasinos.com By Melanie Hulick

LARRY THE CABLE GUY SATURDAY, JANUARY 20 @ 7:00PM AND 10:00PM TICKETS START AT $35 I had the chance to talk with the hilarious comedian, and to say it was the funniest conversation I’ve ever had is an understatement. Larry has been in the business now for over 25 years and shows no signs of slowing down. Adding to his blue collar “Git-R-Done” brand of comedy, kids and parents alike will know him as the voice of Mater in the first “Cars” movie and “Cars 2”, the follow up. With all that is going on around the world, this year, more than ever, would be the time to make plans to catch one of this funny man’s shows. “You have to have laughter in your life … you need that break,” the comedian said. Trust me … you will laugh out loud … I’ve seen his show a couple of times through the years and have always come out feeling like I was just at a “laugh fest” - sore stomach and all. We featured Larry in our December SNOWED-IN edition with a full interview. If you missed it you can check it out at this link: http://www.ellicottvillesnow.com/ article/2017/11/git-r-done

*How did the “Git-R-Done” slogan, that is synonymous with the comic, come about? … Go to the link to hear it from Larry himself.

RANDY HOUSER FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10 @ 7:00PM TICKETS START AT $35 Bursting onto the country music scene as a singer in 2008 with his debut album, “Anything Goes”, Houser has remained a country music favorite among country fans around the world, having recently returned from his first ever tour in the UK to critically acclaimed reviews. Houser taught himself to play the guitar at a very young age and fronted his own band by age ten. Before becoming a solo artist, the singer, who was born in Mississippi, moved to Nashville and turned to a career in songwriting. As a songwriter, since 2002, he has teamed up with some of Nashville’s best writers and co-wrote songs like “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk”, which was recorded by country superstar Trace Adkins, and “Back That Thing Up” which was recorded by newcomer Justin Moore. Don’t miss this down-home country music show where you will hear the hits like “Anything Goes”, “Boots On”, “How Country Feels”, “ Chasing Down A Good Time” and “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight”.

Having released four successful albums and receiving numerous CMT and CMA music nominations that range from New Artist of the Year, Best Music Video and most recently Song of the Year in 2015 for “Like A Cowboy”, Houser has proven he has staying power and is recognized as a country music force.

FOREIGNER SATURDAY, MARCH 3 @ 7:00PM TICKETS START AT $45 This marks the band’s 40th anniversary that has garnered some of the best and most well known songs in the music business. It all started with their debut album released in 1977, which produced hits like “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold As Ice”. Following their first album, Foreigner continued to put albums out that resulted in hit after hit of top charting songs that are still played on rock and adult contemporary radio stations worldwide today. Songs like “Urgent”, “Juke Box Hero”, and two all time favorite rock ballads: the global number one hit “I Want To Know What Love Is” and the record breaking “Waiting For A Girl Like You”. Selling out shows time and again is proof that longtime fans and new fans alike are joining the Foreigner music train. Keeping up with the band has gone to new heights as they have racked up over 400 million YouTube views and counting, as well as 75 million albums sold. Members of the band have changed through the years, but their unmistakable sound, heavy in brass laden songs and some of the best saxophone solos, like in the song “Urgent”, this band is not slowing down or losing their fan appeal any time soon.

Marking their 40th anniversary milestone, founder and Songwriter Hall of Famer Mick Jones is joining the iconic rock band on the road, making this a “must see” musical event of 2018.

2018 IS THE YEAR OF THE DOG

According to Chinese zodiac, 2018 is the Year of Earth Dog, with energies being dominated by the Earth element. In 2018, success - in love and in work - depends primarily on the quality of communication between people. It’s a great year for lifestyle changes!

HIT THE TRAILS A healthy lifestyle change is to spend more time outdoors, enjoying the beauty of the Earth. In the Allegheny National Forest Region of northwestern Pennsylvania, there are over 600 miles of multi-use, four-season trails. All are dog friendly! Begin with an easy trail at Marilla Reservoir. The Marilla Bridges Trail is an easy 1-mile loop trail around the reservoir. Along with being an easy trail to start with, you have great scenery, as the Eric Benjamin Wooden Covered Bridge spans the spillway. The trail is located along Rt. 346, five miles west of the City of Bradford. Parking is alongside the road, with easy access to the trail. tunavalleytrail.com. Moving up in difficulty is the Kinzua Valley Trail. This 7-mile linear trail is specifically good for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. The change in incline along the trail is minimal. The trail is located along the banks of scenic Kinzua Creek. You have a good chance of viewing wildlife and a variety of birds along this trail. There are two trailheads: the first one is in Westline, Pennsylvania. The Westline Inn, located nearby, offers great opportunities for dining after a workout along the trail. For those seeking a more primitive, nature based experience, use the trailhead along Rt. 321 North located near the Red Bridge Campground. This trail is not groomed. kinzuavalleytrail.org For a rustic, backwoods experience, plan on hiking or cross-country skiing the Hidden Valley Passage (a 3.5-mile loop), or the more difficult Marilla Springs Trail (a 3.6-mile point-to-point trail). Marilla Springs is for the experienced hiker as it has progressive changes in elevation, through old growth forest. Maps of all the trails listed above, along with others, can be viewed and downloaded at visitANF.com. Start your 2018 healthy lifestyle with an easy loop on the Marilla Bridges Trail.

For the southern section of trail, phone the Marienville Ranger Station at 814-927-5700. Pennsylvania snowmobile registration can be done online at snowatvreg.dcnr.state.pa.us.
