snowTRENDS: The ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of snowboards ... Find it / Demo it at The Boardroom

Winter is coming. We promise. Despite the marginal hand Mother Nature has dealt us this year, the lake effect machine will eventually fire up, and the slopes will be alive at HoliMont and Holiday Valley. One of the local retailers remaining steadfast and defiant in the face of the current forecast is The Boardroom Snowboard Shop. If you’re familiar with Ellicottville, you’re certainly familiar with the Timkey clan - Mike, Jody, Samantha and Spencer (and of course the shop beagles!) Their commitment to the sport transcends not only their retail platform, but in their day-to-day lives, as they can often be found taking laps together on the slopes of Holiday Valley. With an unrivaled passion such as this, of course we needed to drop in and check out the goods they’ve got stocked for this season ... page 13

Head to Holiday Valley on Friday, Jan. 8 for the World’s Largest Ski & Snowboard Lesson and be a part of a Guinness World Record! Beginners will be a part of the world record for the largest multi-venue ski/snowboard lesson ever taught.

Congratulations to MARJORIE PROTO of Olean, NY, who’s name was randomly drawn to receive the sweepstakes prize pack: an overnight stay at The Jefferson Inn, $275.00 in E-Bucks to spend at sponsoring locations, and a four-pack of weekday ski lift tickets to HoliMont Ski Area. Marjorie’s winning ticket was entered at WATSON’S CHOCOLATES.

“We’re super excited to be a part of such a cool event,” said Jane Eshbaugh, Marketing Director at Holiday Valley Resort. “If we can get people out on the hill and make them feel a part of something bigger all the while teaching them how to ski or ride, then it’s a win-win for us.” For several seasons, National Ski Areas Association and their website SkiAndSnowboardMonth. org has been a driving force in getting people on the hill to experience how awesome learning a snowsport is. The world record event is a unique way for them to draw more participants to the hill. January is Learn to Ski & Snowboard month, and Holiday Valley offers some really strong package deals for beginners. Come during the week and pick up a learn to ski/snowboard package for half price, just $30 during the day or $20 at night! The package includes a beginner’s lesson, a beginner’s area lift ticket and equipment rental. “This is a nationwide initiative that’s designed to get the word out about how easy and fun it is to learn to ski or snowboard and to get more people out on the hill,” Eshbaugh said. “Our school and instructors are top notch, and we want to help grow skiing and snowboarding.” One of the best deals going is the lodging package offered at The Inn at Holiday Valley. Book a midweek trip (Sunday through Thursday) and get a free Learn to Ski/Ride package for all of the first timers in your room. If you’ve got a friend that’s never been on-hill before, this is the perfect way to introduce them to skiing or snowboarding and to show them all of other benefits of the life of a skier or snowboarder, like relaxing in the hot tub after a day on the slopes and enjoying the après ski life of Ellicottville. Holiday Valley’s snowsports school has a dedicated four-person chair and building called Creekside Lodge. When you park at the main area, head down the stairs and follow the green flags to Creekside, where you can find lift tickets, rentals and instructors. The resort offers lessons across the entire spectrum of snowsports, from beginner ski to advanced snowboarding and telemark skiing. Want to get better in the terrain parks? They’ve got instructors for that too, who will show/teach you techniques to better your skill set. It also has programs like the Rangers, where your child can get unlimited lessons throughout the season (with a season pass). There’s also the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program, which gives participants with disabilities the opportunity to get out onto the hill. With over 50 volunteer instructors, Lounsbury focuses on the ability of the person rather than the disability. Reservations are required for the World’s Largest Ski and Snowboard Lesson on Jan. 8, which can be done by calling the Creekside Lodge snowsports desk at 716-699-3505. You’ll receive a free adult Mountain Adventure Learn to Ski or Snowboard package, which is a 1.5 hour lesson, rentals and a lift ticket. You must be at least 6 years old to participate. A NEW ERA BEGINS

Bob Armour Steps into his Ski Boots as Holiday Valley’s New Director of Snowsports

One-on-One with Bob Armour Read the full interview with Bob at www.ellicottvillesnow.com

HEGEMAN: Exactly how long have you been at Holiday Valley and how did the transition from being a ski instructor to being the snowsports director take place? ARMOUR: This will be my fourth year at Holiday Valley and my 45th year working in the snowsports industry. I originally started as a ski instructor and have been a supervisor of instructors for 40 years. A number of years ago I was also the director of a small ski resort in western Pennsylvania. HEGEMAN: You are from Erie, PA. What’s the draw to Ellicottville? ARMOUR: My wife, Karen, and I are from Erie and both of us worked at Peek’n Peak Resort which is much closer to Erie. I worked there for 40 years, full time while in college and part time before retiring from there. I also retired from GE Transportation in Erie. Retirement has given me the flexibility to be able to broaden my horizons. Ellicottville is such a fun town and it is close enough to Erie that friends and family can visit and we can still return home.

“The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new” - Socrates

HEGEMAN: You are PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America) Level III certified (for those who don’t know, Level III is as high up as you go … it’s an impressive accomplishment). Your predecessor was very active within PSIA. Do you plan on continuing where Ron left off in terms of emphasizing the importance of PSIA and AASI within the snowsports school? ARMOUR: PSIA and AASI are instrumental in setting the standards in the industry and assuring consistency between resorts. I have always encouraged and helped train candidates as they strived to attain higher certification levels. PSIA and AASI offer a plethora of educational and training information with manuals, videos, on-snow and indoor clinics, and other information which is invaluable to the success of our instructors. A sense of camaraderie also develops between members as we strive to improve ourselves, the organization and the snowsports industry. I value the friendships that I have made over the years. I continually emphasize the importance of membership in PSIA and AASI to others and to the members of our staff.

Transition is an inevitable aspect of life. Eventually, everything changes. And over the summer at Holiday Valley Resort, a substantial change took place. Ron Kubicki, Holiday Valley’s Director of Snowsports for nearly the past two decades, retired from the snowsports school that he had helped build into one of the top ski schools in New York state.

HEGEMAN: The school grew in so many ways during Ron’s tenure. What plans do you have to help it continue to grow and to be able to put your own stamp on the school? ARMOUR: I have been very lucky to follow in Ron’s footsteps because he left us with a very well organized, knowledgeable and experienced snowsports staff. Right now, I am working on growing the sport through increasing the sale of Ultimate Passes and Learn to Ski or Snowboard programs, increasing skier and snowboarder retention, and expanding the training opportunities for our staff.

Under Kubicki’s leadership, the ski and snowboard instructors at Holiday Valley grew as a cohesive unit - a fact that was made evident at the start of every season when large percentages of the staff returned to spend another winter out on the slopes, teaching people about the sport that they so thoroughly enjoyed.

HEGEMAN: Ellicottville is filled with some very good skiers and snowboarders. What does Holiday Valley Snowsports have to offer those who might feel they are beyond the need to take a lesson? ARMOUR: We can all work on improving our skiing or riding. Even after 45 years I still work on my skiing skills each day I’m on the hill. The members of the snowsports staff and our Training Center coaches have many years of teaching experience and have encountered a myriad of different students. They can make recommendations to help each individual guest improve their riding or skiing experience. We also offer NASTAR, the recreational ski and snowboard race program.

By Dash Hegeman

One of the men on the snowsports team was a retired Information Technology Manager from GE Transportation in Erie, PA by the name of Bob Armour, who, along with his wife Karen, was just about to return to Holiday Valley for his fourth season as part of the snowsports staff. When it became known that Kubicki was ready to transition on to other passions, many qualified replacements were discussed, but it was Armour who ultimately showed the management team at Holiday Valley that he was the candidate best suited to follow in Kubicki’s formidable footsteps. So what was it that inspired the former GE IT Manager, who was responsible for training both customers and GE employees at various international sites, to come out of retirement? After all, we are talking about a man who was once responsible for managing all of GE’s locomotive global inventory and who still occasionally consults for his former company on special projects. It’s not like he has to prove himself to anyone at this stage in his life. His accomplishments speak for themselves. But his accomplishments were made possible because he is driven, and upon sitting down and talking with Armour, one quickly sees that he is driven when it comes to snowsports, and the art of snowsports instruction, as well. In fact, Armour himself said it best when describing his personal philosophy regarding skiing and snowboarding instructing. He hopes “to continually strive to provide the best possible experience for our (Holiday Valley) guests. It is about creating a connection with each and every guest and of course, it’s about having fun!” Fun connections. Holiday Valley has grown in leaps and bounds over the last couple of decades, but the concept of having a good time out on the slopes and making new friends is one that has remained to this day. Ron Kubicki emphasized the importance of that mentality to each and every person he ever hired during his tenure. And now that mindset lives on with Bob Armour. Your new Holiday Valley Snowspnorts Director.

HEGEMAN: Are there any new changes, besides uniforms and director, that people should look forward to within the school this season? ARMOUR: I am working on enhancing the experience of our guests in many different facets. This will include such processes as online registration for lessons and terrain based learning. HEGEMAN: Are there any events coming up at the Valley this season that you’re particularly looking forward to? ARMOUR: I am looking forward once again to the Lisa Densmore “Your Turn” women’s clinic which will be held at Holiday Valley on Feb. 11. I have found that women bring different expectations to the learning and teaching experience. The women’s clinic is taught by Lisa Densmore Ballard, a pro racer and educator, along with our PSIA Level II and Level III woman instructors. Many of our other programs focus on teaching children, but this one focuses on women. Quite often when a woman takes a lesson, she will say that her goal is “to be able to ski (or ride) as well as my children!” I would like to continue to cultivate the entire family experience at Holiday Valley. I am also looking forward to all of the race and freestyle events that are held by our Training Center. I love to watch them!

HEGEMAN: What age were you when your love of skiing started, and where did you learn to ski? ARMOUR: I didn’t start skiing until I was 17 and I started at Peek’n Peak. I became an instructor two years later while I was in college. By teaching skiing I was able to pay for part of my college tuition. I was lucky because I could take the winters off from college to instruct full time. This meant working from 9am until closing at 10:30pm. The instructors would often help the Ski Patrol sweep the hill after the lifts closed so we would not be finished until 11pm. Of course, you could only do that while you are young!

HEGEMAN: What is your favorite skiing memory that you have?
ARMOUR: My favorite ski memories are the times that I spent skiing with Bill Giese. Bill had been the snowsports director at Peek’n Peak and one of my best friends. He was seriously injured in a car accident and sustained injuries that left him paralyzed. He was an amazing athlete. No matter where we were skiing, whether out West or in the East, he was the first to jump off a cornice or rip up a mogul field. He would not hesitate to venture or lead us into untracked territory. Often times we found out too late why it was untracked!

ON DECK: Ellicottville Comes Alive with Blues, Brews and Big Bikes By Mark Flanagan

WINTER BLUES & BREWS FESTIVAL Friday - Sunday, Jan. 22-24 • Throughout Ellicottville

HARLEY-DAY VALLEY 2016 Saturday, Jan. 23 • Holiday Valley’s Main Lodge

photo / Bob Knab, Phatman

As I grew up, I was always surprised that Western New York was a hub of good music. From larger events like the Rock n’ Oldies Festival and the Great Blue Heron, to the simple stuff like ol’ Wagner doing his Wednesday sets at the Gin Mill, it’s hard to avoid the regional good tunes. We even get some pretty well-known bands that come out of Buffalo like the Goo Goo Dolls and the up-and-coming Made Violent. Heck, when Anthony Bourdain came to Buffalo for an episode of his show, No Reservations, in between eating chicken wings and beef on weck, he was given a snowmobile tour of the area by Nelson Starr - a regular feature of the Buffalo bar music scene. I’m not saying that we’re Nashville or anything, but we can hold our own. If you don’t believe me, then plan a trip to our neck of the woods and check out the Winter Blues and Brews Festival coming up this January. For those familiar with the festival, you will notice that this year’s event has the “and brews” added on to it. Our local Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce decided to up their game this year by partnering with the Buffalo Niagara Brewers Association, which is working with the various musical venues that weekend to offer more of a regional craft brew experience. (Patrons can expect to find a tasty selection of craft brews on tap at participating establishments.) The BNBA also plans to take this opportunity of being in Ellicottville to host their own meeting of the minds, surrounded by the après experience that so many have fallen in love with here. Participating breweries have not been announced as of yet, but visitors can check back on the Chamber’s website in the coming days to find out which breweries we’ll have to look forward to when the festival commences. E’ville’s Winter Blues and Brews Festival will kick off Friday, Jan. 22 and run through Sunday, Jan. 24. Take advantage of the downtown business district and its eclectic shopping, dining, craft brews and other fine indulgences, and of course, some of the best Blues music from the area. All of the favorite hot spots are planning to feature live entertainment throughout the weekend. Some of the must go-to performances: Madigan’s will host Never Ben Friday night and Hoagy & The Blues Bombers on Saturday; Balloons will set the stage for Miller & The Other Sinners on Friday and Tommy Z (a festival favorite!) on Saturday; and the Ellicottville Brewing Company will bring in music all weekend as well, including QPhunk on Saturday night (dust off your dancing shoes … you’re going to need them!) Find a complete line-up of the weekend’s performances on the Chamber’s website at www.ellicottvilleny.com. With three days of lively tunes, tasty libations and skiing at our local resorts, make it a weekend getaway by booking a stay at any of Ellicottville’s comfortable lodging facilities, such as The Ilex Inn Bed & Breakfast (ilexinn.com), or EVL Lodge (Ellicottville’s newest accommodation, evllodge.com). Holiday Valley Rental Management offers a plethora of overnight options including condos, chalets and slopeside hotels (www.holidayvalley. com). Or make a reservation at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, located just a 15-minute drive away (www.hiexpress.com). Good music and good beer is a match made in Heaven; it’d be a shame to miss it. Chris Chapman of the Ellicottville Chamber summed the event up best: “As always, it will be a great time and a good way to get out and beat those Winter Blues with a brew (or two), some friends, and great music in some of the best venues the area has to offer.”

Usually, when I write these articles, I’ll lead in with my past experience with the event, or try to somehow relate it back to myself. It’s a system that’s worked well so far (I hope). However, I’ll level with you. I know diddly squat about bikes, and I think you’d see through me if I tried to tell you otherwise. On the other hand, skiing is something I know a good deal about and that aspect alone is enough to sell me on this event. So without further ado, here are the hard-hitting facts about Harley-Day Valley 2016. Gowanda Harley-Davidson will take over Holiday Valley Resort on Saturday, Jan. 23 for Harley-Day Valley, a one-day event that is fully dedicated to ski slopes, big bikes, and just getting out of the house for the best cabin fever party of the season. Delaney Peters, Marketing Manager at Gowanda Harley-Davidson, said after putting on the event the past three years, “Last year we asked ourselves, ‘Is it worth loading up these bikes, hauling them over in the winter, and having a great party?’ … and then we realized we just answered our own question!” The main lodge at Holiday Valley is a great place to stage an event like this. You can’t beat the facilities, accessibility, and the view is amazing. If you have ever been to Holiday Valley, you are well aware of that electric happy feeling that flows through the air. Skiers and snowboarders embrace the freedom of gliding down the slopes – it’s a way for many to recharge the batteries of their soul. The same can be said for riders on the open road. So bringing together snowsports and motorsports at Holiday Valley with Gowanda Harley-Davidson is a ‘no brainer’. Peters goes on to share that even if you’re not into skiing or motorcycles, you’ll still want to check out this event. “This is all about fun and getting together with friends. Biker or not, you’ll want to come out. And if you do happen to love bikes, American Pickers, or classic American Motor History, you’ll want to check out the museum pieces that Gowanda Harley-Davidson will have on display throughout Holiday Valley Lodges and Hotels. You’ll see new models on display like the all new ‘Street’ made popular by the Avenger and Captain America Movies. Gowanda Harley-Davidson will feature their Jumpstart™ simulator, where you can take an actual Harley for a stationary ride with no experience required. “We take a real Harley, place it on the Jumpstart, and while overlooking the slopes of Holiday Valley from the 2nd floor heated deck of the Lodge, you can take our Harley for a ride, for free,” described Shawn Mowery, Service Manager at Gowanda Harley-Davidson. “We’ll even teach you how to start, run through the gears, and get on and off a world-famous Harley-Davidson motorcycle.” Holiday Valley and Gowanda Harley-Davidson are also teaming up to throw a Miller Lite Party during the event from 3pm-7pm inside the Holiday Valley Lodge on the 2nd floor. Live music with The Bleeding Hearts, lots of Harley brand giveaways, Miller prizes, HV prizes and more. Plus, Gowanda Harley-Davidson is bringing back the popular custom Harley-Day Valley event t-shirts, and there will be a live radio broadcast from 96 Kix Country along with their “Money Machine”. Guests can enter for a chance to grab cash, discounts, coupons and more. Holiday Valley will offer information on learn-to-ski packages and introductions to skiing or boarding. Motorcycle Safety School will also have a representative on-site explaining the learnto-ride” programs they have to offer and the benefits of a rider instructor course. Gowanda Harley-Davidson will even have their street team on the slopes passing out prizes for randomlyselected winners who are skiing and snowboarding. Harley-Day Valley 2016 will run from 10am-7pm. You can learn more by visiting the event page at Facebook.com/GowandaHD, or logging onto GowandaHarley.com.

By Spencer Timkey Last month, we gave you an inside look at Holiday Valley’s snowmaking crew. Our next feature showcases another integral part of keeping skiers and snowboarders happy - the groomers. Besides powder, there is no better feeling than ripping through fresh corduroy when the resort starts spinning its lifts in the morning. Whether it’s fresh snow or manmade, the groomers couple machine with execution to deliver that perfect manicure on the hill. Much like the snowmakers, grooming is a job that requires long nights on the front lines. Ed Imhoff, head of vehicle maintenance and snow grooming, has been at Holiday Valley for 10 seasons. Between himself and the nine others on his crew, they keep the snow fresh and the trails even using their six Pisten Bully 600 snowcats. “Typically, the night starts at around 10pm, because we need to wait until the resort closes to send the cats out,” Imhoff said. “We groom for 10 hours, and by 8am, our job is done and the resort will open. Sending five of the cats out ensures that every slope that needs to be groomed will be.” Trails that have had snowmaking always get priority over others, so the groomers and snowmakers work in unison. Each Pisten Bully is driven by one groomer, and the 15,000-pound, 480 HP beasts take long top-to-bottom passes on each run. “They are sweet machines,” Imhoff said. “The windshield wipers and windows are heated in case we’re grooming trails where the snowmaking guns are on. The blades are 16-feet wide, which allows us to cover a lot of area in one pass. There are designated routes that we use on each run - so grooming on Mardi Gras will be a bit different than, say, Cindy’s.” Of the six Pisten Bullys, two are unique: one is a ‘winch cat’ and the other a ‘park cat.’ The winch is used to groom the steeper trails, such as Falcon, the Wall, etc., while the park cat does exactly what the name implies - the terrain parks. “As a skier skies downhill, it takes the snow that was at the top and pushes it to the bottom. We use the winch to pull the snow back up to the top, which maintains the vertical. If we constantly groomed downhill, you’d take a steep and make it less such. Chris (Perks) is our park builder/groomer, and he uses the park cat to push snow into piles and then cut it into jumps or entries for rails and other features.” The groomers have a rhythm in how they maintain the snow. If they were to continually lap the lift house at the top and bottom of runs, it would wear the snow out. “We’ll change stuff up throughout the season, such as ‘rolling’ the snow over on slopes. We break into it and bust it up to get the best snow back on top. Mardi Gras and Morningstar, for instance, get a lot of manmade snow. There is fresh snow that often times resides underneath the top layer, so churning the snow up gives the skier/snowboarder the best possible snow to ride on.” Ideally, the crew wants around a foot of either fresh or manmade snow as a base for optimal grooming.

34 Washington Street Ellicottville, NY 14731

It’s a job that requires long hours, but like the snowmakers, the groomers are an integral part of why Holiday Valley is ranked 3rd overall on the East Coast. Thank a groomer!

Page 10 ... SNOWED-IN ~ JANUARY 2016

Winter is upon us here in Ellicottville, and HoliMont kicked off the 2015-16 season on December 24. Although Mother Nature has not been cooperative with cold temperatures or snow, we’re ready for an exciting year of winter sports at HoliMont. Stop up and check out the upgrades to our tuning shop, new apparel, and the complete overhaul of Dina’s at the Mont. Our social calendar is full of exciting events for our members and their guests, and the public will be pleased to test out new snowmaking capabilities during the week, Monday through Friday. We’ll see you out here on the slopes of HoliMont!

JANUARY IS NATIONAL SKI SAFETY MONTH

HoliMont will participate in National Ski Safety Month with plenty of on-hill activities including handouts courtesy of the HoliMont Safety Patrol along with Ski Patrol and Ski Instructors. Free hill tours will be available to new skiers and riders. The HoliMont Ski Safety Department will also be hosting a National Kids Safety Poster Contest. This contest is open to elementary school children and gives kids a chance to have fun and be creative while learning about slope safety. All little shredders are welcome to create artwork depicting “Your Responsibility Code” and safety on the ski hills using pencil, crayon, paint and other materials (no macaroni) on an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. The winner will receive a free helmet and will be entered into the National Contest. All entries must be submitted to Justin Latimer at HoliMont by Jan. 31, 2016. For full details and official entry form, email justin@holimont.com.

TUNE UP UPDATED

FISH FRY FRIDAY

In case you didn’t know (and if you didn’t you absolutely should!), every Friday evening from 6pm8:30pm during ski season, Dina’s at The Mont hosts a lip-smacking fish fry. If you’re looking to take a break from all the action of downtown Ellicottville, then make the short trip up to HoliMont for your dining needs. It’s a light, fun, family-friendly setting and best of all, the buffet-style menu is constantly changing so the seafood lover in you will have an array of new options on any given week. Should you (or your children) not feel like eating seafood, there are plenty of other options to satisfy your appetite. If you have children, one of the great benefits of the Friday Night Fish Fry is the selection of kid-friendly movies that play on the flat screen TV in the Chalet. The entertainment usually provides some nice downtime for parents to enjoy their meal while the kids eat and watch DVDs. So if you are looking for a hassle-free meal in a comfortable, serene setting, spend your Friday nights at HoliMont. You’ll walk away feeling full and looking forward to what next week’s menu will have to offer. Cost is $15 for adults and $8.50 for children age 12 and under.

The entire Tune Shop (previously known as Gear up) has been upgraded for 2016 with all the latest binding and tuning technologies. You can expect faster turn-around time, enjoy lower prices, and reap the benefits of higher quality tunes that you’ve come to expect in Ellicottville. Our well-equipped full-service shop is available daily until 4:30pm.

THE ‘SWISS ARMY KNIFE’ OF SNOWBOARDS ... FIND IT / DEMO IT AT THE BOARDROOM By Pat Morgan Winter is coming. We promise. Despite the marginal hand Mother Nature has dealt us this year, the lake effect machine will eventually fire up, and the slopes will be alive at HoliMont and Holiday Valley. One of the local, specialty retailers remaining steadfast and defiant in the face of the current forecast, is none other than The Boardroom Snowboard Shop. If you’ve ever read SNOWED-IN, you’re certainly familiar with the Timkey clan Mike, Jody, Samantha and Spencer (and of course the shop beagles!) - who have remained the only snowboard specific shop in the 14731 area for 32 years. Their commitment to the sport transcends not only their retail platform, but in their day-to-day lives, as they can often be found taking laps together on the slopes of Holiday Valley. With an unrivaled passion such as this, of course we needed to drop in and check out what goods they have in store for those visiting Ellicottville this season. We caught up with Spencer at The Boardroom’s NEW second location, dubbed ‘The Boardroom on Main’, a 1200 sq. ft. retail location in the lower level of 16 Washington Street, right in the walking/shopping district of Ellicottville. Speaking on behalf of the entire family, Timkey revealed despite the uncertainty with the weather, business is steady, the stoke level is at an all-time high, and boards are flying out the door, waxed with One Ball Jay and ready to hit the slopes. Among the boards Timkey is most hyped on for the coming season is the Proto, manufactured by Never Summer Industries from Denver, Colorado. “With variable conditions often found on the east coast, this board is the perfect addition to any quiver,” Timkey explains, calling it the “swiss army knife” of their board wall. Proto alludes to the word ‘prototype’, as year after year, Never Summer continues to push innovations into this model of their line. With an extended rocker camber profile, riders find their eye-to-edge transitions are easier than ever. Additionally, the Proto features harmonic dampeners and perforated rocker pads, which are perfect for those firm days on ice coast hard-pack. Timkey also revealed The Boardroom also has a complete line of Never Summer and Lib Tech demo boards, so customers can try before they buy, should boards like the Proto pique their interest. Speaking of Lib Tech, The Boardroom is the only place you’ll find this brand - one of the leading innovators in the snowboard industry. With their Magne-Traction serrated edge technology and various camber/sidecut stories, this brand has single handedly paved the way for re-thinking the way guys and gals can attack the mountain. Of course we can’t leave the ladies out with the new technology for the year, which led Timkey to telling us about the GNU (part of the Lib-Tech brand umbrella) ‘Ladies Choice’ deck, the pro model of none other than Jamie Anderson, one of the top professional female snowboarders in the world. The Boardroom has long had a reputation as the best place to shop for women’s specific snowboards, outerwear and accessories, as they previously had a dedicated section in their store called The Powder Room. They’ve now evolved, and although the name is no longer used, the commitment remains unrivaled, made apparent by stocking boards such as the Ladies Choice. Snappy yet still forgiving, the Ladies Choice is yet again a ‘Good Wood’ winner in the annual TransWorld Snowboarding (a leading publication in the shred industry) awards. Featuring rocker camber between the feet, elliptical cambers out to the contact points, as well as an asymmetrical shape, this board is without a doubt leading the pack in a competitive women’s category. No trip to either of The Boardroom locations would be complete without browsing their expansive accessory selection. Whether its custom building a pair of goggles at their oneof-a-kind Oakley goggle bar, getting fitted with a Smith or Giro helmet, or checking out ‘gadgets’ from GoPro, Outdoor Tech, or SP Gadgets, you’d be hard pressed to not leave without picking up at least one more item you didn’t know you needed. New this year, and unique to The Boardroom, are Phunksunwear facemasks and neck tubes. Coming in at a great holiday price of just $25, you can take home unique custom printed pieces featuring the iconic clocktower of Holiday Valley or the facade of The Boardroom’s flagship location, with their trademark United States flag prominently displayed. The Timkeys have long felt that keeping their focus on domestically made product was important, so adding Phunkshunwear with their custom production and Colorado base was a no brainer. With plenty of colors and patterns available, there will be something to match your current (or new) outerwear kit without a doubt! These are just a few of the many amazing products meticulously selected to stock the shelves and racks at The Boardroom (6113 Route 219, 716-699-5620) and The Boardroom on Main (16 Washington Street, 716-394-5800). The Timkeys encourage you to stop in to either of their locations to get the full experience and see what has them so stoked on the 2015-16 winter season here in Ellicottville, NY.

Follow the Journey ... “WHATEVER, WHENEVER”

Western New Yorker, Photographer, Adventure Seeker takes the ride of his life ... in a Bus By Spencer Timkey

“You’ve got a solid 75 years on this Earth, and my question to everyone is: if you’re 30, are you proud of the last 30 years? If you’re not, then start changing that.” Adam Sauerwein does not live life by a society-set standard. He refuses to adhere to the idea that one’s path must follow the timeline of school, to college, to career. His lifestyle stems from an attitude of seeking that next adventure, shaking hands and experiencing what the world has to offer. Adam lives The Pursuit - doing whatever, whenever. Halfheartedly working a 9-5, Sauerwein knew that he could not - would not - live in monotony for the rest of his life. So last year, he bought a school bus. “The idea for the bus came from paying a lot of money to rent some not-so-nice places in a ski town,” he said. “I wanted something that was mobile, cheap, and efficient. Trolling the Internet, I came across the Tiny Home Movement, and thought that was a pretty good idea. I pass a bus garage on my commute every day, so one day I stopped and asked if they had anything for sale. Two days later, I was tearing seats out.” The 2001 Chevy 3500 Corbeil became Sauerwein’s home for the winter. Wanting to share the stoke, he envisioned it becoming an adventure mobile, with the ability to sleep 3-4 people. He spent over 100 nights in it, oft-times solo. And if you remember, last winter was one of the coldest we’ve ever had. “I only had propane heat,” he reminisced. “Propane heat is very wet heat. It was almost like a sauna (laughs). Between my wet clothes, ski boots, and constant mouth breathing, it was pretty damp and gross.” Sauerwein spent over 100 nights in the bus’ inaugural season, traveling between western New York and Vermont. He figured finding a spot to park could be pretty difficult … until word of his endeavor spread. “I went to Allegany State Park a lot,” he said. “You can park there for up to three days without having a permit, so I did that a lot. The first night, two Park Rangers came up to me rather … apprehensively. But then I explained to them what I was doing, showed them around, and they loved it.” “Then Moose (owner of the Ellicottville Depot) caught wind of it, and not to quote terrible music, but he welcomed me with arms wide open. I’d park it at the Depot, kind of make sure no one was being sketchy around the restaurant, then wake up and shred. It was awesome.”

Come springtime, Sauerwein knew the bus had seen its best days. The thing was a mess, and he figured that was that. But this past fall, he saw a newer bus at the same spot he bought the original … lo and behold, The Pursuit was reborn. “I’ve made some better modifications to the new bus that are better suited for actually living,” he said. “I installed a solar panel on top for power, put a wood burning stove in for heat and food, and it has rotating seats so people can face front or back. I’m ‘roughing it’ but it’s still living.” Sauerwein worked with former WNY native Chris Damiani on the logo for The Pursuit. Through trial and error, they created something iconic that represents what Adam’s pursuit is about. “It’s a buffalo with ‘Whatever, Whenever’,” he said. “We originally thought of ‘Wherever, Whenever,’ but that’s a Shakira song (laughs). The logo, or even The Pursuit, is not about my bus. It’s the mentality, the lifestyle. Stop making excuses, and just go do it.” If you follow Adam on Instagram (@mradamx), you know full well what it’s about. Jumping off cliffs into water, skiing, taking (many) selfies with a smile plastered on his face. “At the beginning, the bus was about saving money on rent. But when I started doing it, people would come up to me and say ‘dude, your Insta is so rad and I was so inspired by it.’ People really care about it, which sounds so silly to me on the surface. That’s why I started doing the web series, in hopes I could further inspire people.” Sauerwein and former WNYer Corey Potter (now working at Killington Mountain, and founder of Chief Co. Video) created a concept for a video series revolving around Adam’s Pursuit. The first episode, which dropped last month, features an introduction to the Pursuit and some skiing at Killington. “I think, by doing this video series, it will further to encourage people to step out of their comfort zones and go do what they want,” he said. “The whole thing ... life changes, life grows. I don’t think I’ll ever regret taking a couple years of my life and chasing it. By following that - you’re dream - you’ll figure it out. I’m not going to tell people to do things or how to live their life, but if I can leave a lasting impression on them, then I think I’ve helped.” Follow Adam’s adventure on Instagram @mradamx, or look for The Pursuit around Ellicottville this winter.

natural foods market & holistic wellness center

ReStart and ReVive in 2016 By Kristina Barlow, N.D., C.S.T.

New Year’s Resolutions are always fun to create because the associated HOPE for positive results runs high. Most resolutions involve the desire for happiness, wealth and health. We are looking for motivated souls who would like to participate in a three and a half month nutritional, supplemental and fitness program. In addition to group participants, there are open positions for training future health and wellness coaches. Now is the moment to invest our time, money and energy into healing our broken bodies in order to experience greater happiness, wealth and health. Gretchen Mendell, owner of Nature’s Remedy Natural Market & Holistic Center in Ellicottville, along with Jillian Vogtli, raised in Ellicottville and a two-time Olympian for mogul skiing, and myself have come together to form a fun, inspiring, and effective natural healing health and weight loss program. This holistic-style program is designed to offer various nutritional, supplemental and fitness options to meet each person’s needs. Each of us is devoted to your end results and passionate about the journey towards that finish line.

LET’S GET STARTED: 14-DAY CLEANSTART DETOX Join us for a 14-Day CleanStart Detox (start and stop anywhere between January 1-20) that will kick off your 2016 New Year and prepare you for the 12-Week ReStart and ReVive In.Form Program. Instructions for the Detox can be received at Nature’s Remedy with or without a FREE scheduled consultation with me OR via a FREE phone consultation with me. (See contact info below!) Supplements include detoxifying fiber, herbal detoxifying capsules, liquid chlorophyll, a B-vitamin drink, a multi-vitamin drink and probiotics. Nutrition includes the elimination of sugar, wheat and dairy and the addition of pure water, vegetables and vegan pea protein smoothies. Included in your detox package is a Lifestyle Replacement Plan explaining not only what to eliminate from your diet and lifestyle but also what to replace and add. Fitness includes interval walking and yoga. Assessments include a before and after questionnaire and fitness scan, providing 8 different body measurements. Additional Detox Enhancements include two hot power yoga classes at Groove Fitness (special offer provided for detox participants), two Detox Power Baths (purchase at Nature’s Remedy) and two Infrared Saunas (available in my office above Nature’s Remedy).

RESTART & REVIVE IN.FORM PROGRAM JANUARY 21 - APRIL 14 Join us for this 12-week program which takes place every Thursday evening from 6:30-8pm at Nature’s Remedy in Ellicottville OR via an online live webinar. (This weekly webinar will also be available to view at later dates.) The cost for this program is $99 or about $8 per class. We are here to offer you a program that will be effective yet fit into your lifestyle with regards to finances, time and capabilities. Supplements are tailored to each person’s individual needs and are geared towards detoxification, bio-nutritional needs and improving metabolism and energy. Nutrition is focused on a clean-eating, daily essential meal plan with the strong belief that sugar, wheat and dairy must be eliminated while water, vegetables, clean proteins, whole foods, superfoods and pea protein smoothies will best prepare the body for healing, energy and weight loss. Fitness is an obvious component yet the most difficult to implement due to the obstacles of poor exercise habits, un-prioritized time and lack of motivation. The program offers inspiration and accountability while providing you with practical tools to have consistency and success in this area. Jillian Vogtli has created fun and effective in-home exercise videos with live class participants, all who are assessed and recorded for their results over a 3-month period. For those of you who will not exercise at home, there are four great locations here in Ellicottville offering various packages: Groove Fitness, Core Performance, Peakside Health & Fitness, and Laura Solly Yoga. Assessments include a before and after questionnaire and fitness scan, providing 8 different body measurements, along with tape measurements, blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, respiratory rate and pulse oximetry. Additional Program Enhancements include discounted fees for naturopathic services offering CranioSacral Therapy, Authentic Touch Essential Oils, Individualized Consultations and Detox Foot Spas.

RESTART & REVIVE TESTIMONIALS “ReStart & ReVive has given me all of the tools I need for adopting healthier eating habits and have become a part of my daily life. I really learned a lot about the science of healthy, natural nutrition. The weekly classes provided a lot of inspiration, accountability and support. Most of all, the incredibly knowledgeable, caring attention from Kristina made this whole program a success for me. I have lost 17 pounds in 12 weeks and feel better both physically and mentally. This program will be something I can follow for my lifetime.” ~ G.G., Bradford, PA (This woman continued implementing this lifestyle and one year later has maintained a 30-pound weight loss, improved energy, better sleep, happier moods and diminished pain.) “My goals in the first ReStart & ReVive class were to lose some weight, get relief from hot flashes, improve my energy, gain self-confidence and be able to sleep better at night. We started with the essential food plan, then looked at the cause and effect of our present day habits and learned about detoxification. The phrase, ‘Lose Weight by Losing Toxicity’ had a profound impact on my life. I had never done a body cleanse and the results were amazing. I can’t get over how good I feel with ‘clean-eating’ and eliminating toxins accumulated from years of being a hairdresser. We supported each other throughout the whole 12 weeks and I lost 15 pounds! I have positive energy - mentally, physically and emotionally. Healthy eating has led to a new body and a new mind. I look forward to the future. If you are ready for a difference in your life, this class could be the answer for you.” ~ J.B., Little Valley, NY

OUTDOOR AND RECREATION SPORTS SHOW Jan. 23-24 | Good Times of Olean Events Center | Olean, NY

AMSOIL U.S. AIR FORCE SNOCROSS NATIONAL Feb. 5-6 | Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino | Salamanca, NY

By Mary Heyl

By Pat Morgan

ADAM SAUERWEIN PHOTOGRAPHY The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce (GOACC) is pleased to announce the return of an event that all outdoorsmen and women eagerly anticipate: the annual Outdoor and Recreation Sports Show. The event provides the perfect opportunity to gear up for spring fishing, camping, hiking, and the great outdoors in general! This year’s show takes place on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 23-24 at the Good Times of Olean Events Center. Whether you’re looking forward to updating your equipment, learning tips from wellknown experts and vendors, or enjoying the afternoon with like-minded friends, the 7th annual Sports Show is the place to be. According to Meme Yanetsko, Chief Operating Officer of GOACC, the Sports Show “brings the whole of the great outdoors under one roof.” With almost forty vendors to date, the Sports Show caters to a variety of outdoor activities. Yanetsko is pleased to welcome back many of last year’s vendors including the show’s official snowmobile vendor, Leisure Time Powersports, Pfeiffer Nature Center, Reloaders Anonymous, Country Squirrel Outfitters of Ridgway, PA, and Red Barn Gun Shop, which sponsors the show’s raffle. Let your taste buds run wild at Buffalo Bob’s Wild Game Jerky booth or put them to the test at the booth of Burning Asphalt Sauces! Even those looking to obtain a pistol permit can stop by the Allegany/Cattaraugus County Pistol Clerk’s booth. Several new vendors are looking forward to being a part of the show and sharing their gear and expertise with visitors. Twin Tiers Outerwear of Cuba, which opened its doors earlier this year, is eager to share their wide selection of outdoor clothing including hunting outwear, Dickies, Muck Boots, and reflective gear. Other new vendors include Westfield Bait & Tackle, John’s Guns of Olean, and the Red House Brook Chapter of Trout Unlimited from Frewsburg. With over 2,000 attendees at last year’s show, Yanetsko emphasizes the great exposure that vendors continue to enjoy year after year. “As more individuals and families travel shorter distances from home and take shorter vacations or mini vacations, the Rec/Sports Show will provide an opportunity for the public to learn about a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities close to home,” explained Yanetsko. Another part of the show that visitors look forward to is the featured entertainment. Yanetsko is excited to announce the return of Jim Beverly, a well-known retriever trainer from Oakfield, NY. Beverly has over fifty years of experience in training retrievers and being involved in the waterfowl hunting industry. A Dakota Decoy X-treme Team Staff Member, DTSystem Pro Staffer, Dog Pro for M2D Camo and Pro Staff member for Mojo Outdoors, Beverly shares his knowledge and experience at outdoor shows all over New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Throughout the weekend, visitors can enjoy ongoing dog training seminars that “feature Jim’s team of dogs displaying their acute ability by retrieving and working right at the show,” according to Yanetsko. Beverly will also be available throughout the weekend for one-on-one questions. GOACC is hosting a raffle during the show which includes the opportunity to win one of many impressive prizes. The Grand Prize is the Savage Model 111 .270 Trophy Hunter with scope (or any standard Glock or Cross Bow), a prize valued at $595.00. Second prize is a 2016 Cannondale Mountain Bike Catalyst 4, which retails for $410.00. Other prizes include the KA-BAR Zombie Swabbie, KA-BAR Becker Crewman, KA-BAR USMC Utility Knife, and a Cutco Gut Hook Hunting Knife. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20 with a limit of 500 tickets: the drawing will be held on Jan. 24. Tickets can be purchased now at the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce office and at the show. The show will open on Saturday, Jan. 23 from 10am-5pm and Sunday, Jan. 24 from 10am-3pm. Admission to the show is $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students and seniors. Admission for children ages twelve and under (accompanied by an adult) is free. There’s no need to leave the show for lunch, as concessions provided by Good Times will be offered on the show floor throughout the weekend. For more information about the GOACC Outdoor and Recreation Sports Show, contact Yanetsko at 716-372-4433 or email events@oleanny.com.

One thing is for certain – this winter in western New York has been anything but ordinary. Snow enthusiasts ranging from skiers, to snowboarders, to snowmobilers have been left scratching their heads with uncertainty as to how the season will finally shape up. One thing we can say with absolute certainty however, is winter WILL be returning to Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino Feb. 5-6, as the U.S. Air Force Snocross National snowmobile race roars back into Salamanca, NY for the 4th year in a row. If you’ve never experienced the fast paced, high flying sights and sounds of an AMSOIL Snocross event, throw a leg over the saddle, and let’s see what this exciting event is all about! You may be wondering, “how in the heck are they going to pull off this event? There’s no snow in my backyard, the sled trails are barren, and all I’ve been able to do thus far is simply fire up my sled in my garage just to hear it purr!” Well, the great thing about the AMSOIL Snocross series, is how many resources they bring to the table to pull off the event. Everything from high-powered snowmaking systems, top of the line trail groomers, as well as renowned course designers will converge on Salamanca to ensure these world-class athletes will have an incredible course to race on. One of these world-class athletes is none other than Tucker Hibbert, arguably the best snocross racer on the planet. With 9 X-Games Gold Medals, 9 United States Snocross Championships and two FIM Snowcross World Championships under his belt, Hibbert will be looking to add to his heavily decorated trophy case when he returns to Salamanca in February. SNOWED-IN had the opportunity to catch up with Hibbert briefly, who expressed a great deal of admiration for the region, and specifically the fans in Salamanca. “I’ve always liked racing in New York and wish we [the national series] had more events in the Northeast part of the U.S.,” Hibbert told us. “The fans are super passionate about racing and snowmobiling - it’s cool to see. Salamanca has pulled in some big crowds the past few years and I hope it’ll be even bigger this year.” It’s no wonder Hibbert has such admiration for Salamanca and the enthusiastic standing room only crowds - he swept both races dating back to the 2013 event. Not too shabby, huh? Wondering how you can get in on the action? Throttle down – let’s see what’s in store ... The Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino has been the host of the AMSOIL Snocross series ever since it began adding Salamanca as a stop to the series. Gus Tsivikis, General Manager of Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino, reveals his thoughts why: “Our location really sets us apart and creates opportunities you won’t necessarily find at other properties,” he said. “We’re able to match all of the gaming, entertainment and excitement inside with the power, speed and energy of Snocross taking place outside, surrounded by our natural setting, to provide our guests a destination experience they won’t forget.” Among the experiences, you can expect some family friendly fan engagement activities. There will be a vendor village where one can purchase their favorite rider’s apparel and accessories, as well as autograph/photo opportunities with athletes. Additionally, VIP packages are available with pre-race pit access, preferred seating, and more. If you’re into the smell of race exhaust, there are multiple ticket options available to you. All weekend passes are available for as low as $30 per person online (save $10) with packs of 4 tickets for just $100. Individual Friday & Saturday tickets come in at $25, all of which can be purchased at www.isocracing.com, where you’ll also find the full schedule of events for the two-day affair. Friday, the action kicks off with practice and qualifiers for juniors, amateurs and girls. Opening ceremonies are at 6pm, with pros taking the course in a series of heats, culminating with the Friday championship race at 9pm. Saturday is more of the same, with race heats for amateurs getting underway at 9am, with the same opening ceremonies/pro racing beginning at 6pm. With all this info to digest, there are just a few things left to do – first, think COLD, COLD thoughts to ensure these crews are able to make this event as amazing as it has been in years past. Second, click on over to snocross.com to check out all the info for not only the Salamanca event, but the entire series. There is a ton of information about the series, riders, sponsors, as well as the aforementioned ticket purchase options. Lastly, click through senecaalleganycasino.com or call 716-945-3200 to book your stay and find out about special packages offered during the Feb. 5-6 AMSOIL Snocross National!

die-hard fan, but why the decision to start a tribute band? MCNEIL: Well who wouldn’t want to be one of The Beatles? It’s kind of every guy’s dream. When I was a young lad I learned to play the music because I loved it so much. My dad took me to see a show here in Los Angeles when the show Beatle Mania was on Broadway and I thought … Oh my gosh … there are four guys who are The Beatles, that aren’t The Beatles, and I thought maybe I could do that one day. Fast forward a couple years and I met Arty, who plays Paul McCartney, at a local Beatles convention here in LA and we took it from there.

HULICK: You’ve learned the accents, the mannerisms and Arty, who is right

The Fab Four-The Ultimate Tribute band will bring their precise portrayal of The Beatles to Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino for two shows at 3pm and 7pm on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016. Founding member Ron McNeil, who portrays John Lennon, met Ardy Sarraf, who portrays Paul McCartney, at a Beatles convention in Los Angeles, California and their vision of the Tribute band was on its way to reality. Having been asked to perform in Liverpool, they met who would be the next member of the band, Gavin Pring, who portrays George Harrison, at a Beatles convention there. The final member, Erik Fidel, who portrays Ringo Starr, came aboard after they met him in Sacramento, California. Playing at least 100 shows a year all over the world in places like Japan, Australia, France, Germany and more, this tribute band takes you through three different eras of The Beatles music singing and performing such hits as “Yesterday”, “Hey Jude”, “Twist & Shout” and more. I had the chance to catch up with McNeil to talk about the show and what put him on the path to create this extraordinary tribute band. We also talked about the added responsibility he takes on while portraying John Lennon. “This is a family show,” said McNeil. “Even if you are new to the music and the history of The Beatles come out and see us … learn about the music as we take you on a magical journey of one of the greatest bands of all time.” For ticket information visit www.senecacasinos.com and click on Seneca Allegany. For more about The Fab Four, go to thefabfour.com.

handed, even learned to play the guitar left handed because that’s how Paul plays the guitar, and Eric, who plays Ringo, takes two hours to put on a nose that looks just like his. Have you received any comments from the original members or their families? MCNEIL: Only from their attorneys. (laughs) Actually, we worked with Olivia Harrison, George’s wife, and their son Danny came to see us when we were working on the film “Yellow Submarine” that Robert Zemekis wanted to put out for Disney … maybe he’ll do it now that Disney has more money with the Star Wars thing.

HULICK: (laughs) MCNEIL: So we met with them and some other people around The Beatles, but as far as we know, neither Paul nor Ringo have come to see us, but there’s always an open invitation and we’ll give them half off the ticket price.

HULICK: (laughs) The fact that you guys have three costume changes to reflect three different periods of The Beatles history takes you to the top of the tribute bands versus some that just come out and sing the music. You totally submerge the audience into what it was like, not only for The Beatles, but for their fans that went on the ride with them. MCNEIL: The one thing we try to do is … before each show there is a secret handshake we do that means we are going to do the show as if The Beatles themselves are in the audience and would they have enjoyed it … and show the respect and the love we have for their music. We hope that reflects in our show.

HULICK: Your show is something that has to be experienced live I would imagine. MCNEIL: Yes … it has to be seen live. A lot of people have come up to us after the show and said they saw us on YouTube, but seeing it live is so much better. There is some magic that happens when you see it live. We have an Ed Sullivan for instance and there are moments that aren’t captured on video. You get to watch the history starting when they were young and innocent, then we move on to the psychedelic period and into the late period when Yoko Ono starts coming in and breaking the band up.

HULICK: People need to know that you guys play all your own instruments and

everything is done live … no backing tracks for the singing; it is you guys in every way. What else can we expect from the show? MCNEIL: Yes, we do all the singing and playing. There’s a lot of fun and some lows, like when I talk about John Lennon and how ironic it was that he was taken from us in a very violent way when he was always singing about peace. We do feel that their story was shared by the fans as they went through it all with them, and if you didn’t go through it, you learned about it.

HULICK: John Lennon’s message is still so relevant in the world today with

everything that is going on. How does that make you feel inside to be able to make that contribution, through what you do, of continuing to spread his message? MCNEIL: I think that’s exactly it … his message lives on through our music every time we perform for someone new to the music, a new generation if you will, when parents bring their kids. They hear that message along with the music. I sing “Imagine” three or four times a week and it always affects me every single time. Like you said … today, more than ever, that message rings true … put our differences aside and let’s make peace.
