What do you get when you combine a good cause with garbage bags, a ski hill, silent auction, tasty food, and tons of laughs? The Penguin Paddle, of course! On Saturday, February 24, Holiday Valley’s Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program (LASP) will be hosting its annual fundraiser at the base of Yodeler Lodge to raise money for their program, which offers lessons to persons with virtually all disabilities, both physical and cognitive. “It’s a really fun afternoon, and you don’t even have to know how to ski,” said Mary Ellen Racich, LASP director. Even if you have absolutely no experience on the slopes, the Penguin Paddle is for you! Participants as young as five years old can take part by purchasing a garbage bag for $1 and donning it before sliding down the hill on their bellies “penguin style” with others in their age group to compete for prizes. Purchase your garbage bag and register for the slide at Creekside Lodge from 8:30-12:30 or from 9am-1:00 at Yodeler Lodge. The Penguin Races begin at 1:30pm. Helmets are required. “It’s incredible how much the fundraiser and the program have grown over the years,” said Racich, who has been a part of the program for 27 years, serving as director for the past 16. In 1987, Bill Lounsbury, a ski patroller at Holiday Valley, lost his leg to cancer, but continued to ski using outriggers (specialized ski equipment), inspiring all who knew him. When he passed away, many donations were made in his honor, and the money was used to start LASP, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and chapter of Disabled Sports USA. C

In its earliest years, Racich recalls the program being quite small, with four instructors teaching about 10 lessons. Now, the program has grown to 45 volunteer instructors who teach an average of 250 lessons throughout the season, which runs from December 26 through March 23. The program, whose mission is to “deEMPHASIZE the disABILITY,” serves individuals between the ages of 5 and 75 of all physical and mental abilities, ranging from paralysis, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis to autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and spina bifida. While most of the program’s students are children, Racich explained that there is a group of seniors with Parkinson’s disease that participates, as well as a group of veterans who ski and are served lunch at no charge every year (this year’s Veteran’s Day event is March 7). Emily Alexander, a 31-year-old student with Down syndrome, has been participating in the program since she was 13, and it’s been a life-changing experience. “She used to ski with us from the ages of 4 to 8, but then she just didn’t want to anymore,” explained her mother, Georgia Alexander, whose family lives in Cleveland but has been skiing in Ellicottville since the 1960s. “Then Mary Ellen invited her to join the program and she’s been skiing ever since! She loves to ski with the instructors and the one-on-one attention.” The program, which consists of volunteer instructors who work two-on-one with students in a private setting, offers lessons 7 days/week at Holiday Valley. For just $50, students receive a two-hour lesson, all of their skiing equipment (including bi-skis and mono-skis for individuals with physical disabilities), and a lift ticket. “Emily has gone from skiing with a rope around her waist to being able to ski anywhere! She can snow-plow, turn and is totally in control. It’s given her great independence!” said her mother, who highly recommends

TELESTOCK | Friday, February 23 | Champagne Sundeck

The Tele ski event of the year returns on Friday, February 23. Telestock, presented by The City Garage, is a day of peace, love and Tele skiing! Telestock has become a fan favorite at Holiday Valley, running a strong 15+ years! Join The City Garage at Yodeler Lodge and on the Champagne Sundeck for Telestock 2018. This year’s theme: Hawaiian Luau. A much different discipline than alpine skiing, Tele requires a free heel. The City Garage has sold and spread the stoke on Tele since they opened in 1999, and events like Telestock have created and cultivated a buzz. It’s different than what everyone else is doing, and that’s why The Garage embraces it. “We’ve been doing Tele since Day 1,” said Trey Clauss, The City Garage’s main man. “It’s great to be able to offer something different. And when we can make an event out of it, that makes it even better.” This year’s Hawaiian theme encourages you to bring your Hawaiian leis and beach gear. If you need Tele gear, 22 Designs, one of the main Tele binding manufacturers, is a big part of the event, as is Scarpa boots. The Garage will have a variety of equipment from them and other ski brands for you to demo, all available for sale. “There will be lots of local Tele skiers on hand to help you out if you’re a newbie, and we have two certified instructors coming from HoliMont to assist,” Trey said. “We’ll be cooking food from Dom’s Butcher Block, and there will be a loose schedule of events once the day gets going.” Telestock is a free event open to the public (you need a lift ticket or season pass to participate). Check out some Facebook and YouTube videos from past years to get an idea on how much fun Telestock is. For more info, find The City Garage on Facebook, call 716-699-2054 or stop into the shop at 5 Monroe Street, downtown Ellicottville.

Sunday, March 4 | Independence Run UAL 1ST ANN Sunday, March 4 is a day to celebrate snowboarding. The 1st Annual Boardroom Banked, presented by The Boardroom Snowboard Shop, is a banked slalom that pits riders across 4 divisions against each other. Going down on Holiday Valley’s Independence run, the Banked looks to become an annual staple in Ellicottville’s event schedule.

alom) l S (

“The concept came from a lack of snowboard-specific events in the area,” said The Boardroom’s Spencer Timkey. “We wanted to have an event that would cater to snowboarding. And while rail jams and park events are awesome, we also wanted to do something that everyone could compete in. A banked slalom was the answer.”

Looking at the success of banked slaloms like Mt. Baker’s Legendary Banked Slalom and Darkside’s (of Killington) Slash and Berm, The Boardroom knew they could create something similar. “There’s such a strong contingent of snowboarding in our area, and sometimes it gets overlooked,” Timkey said. “We want the Banked to pull riders from all over - Pittsburgh, Cleveland, even as far as Vermont or the Poconos. We’re trying to make this an East Coast heavy, where riders know the name and want to come out and compete.” The Banked offers 4 divisions: Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Grom and OG (Original Gangster, or 35 and older). The run will begin at the top of Independence, winding down before the finish at the bottom of Yodeler. A party on the Champagne Sundeck will welcome athletes and spectators, complete with DJ Tyler Swift and DJ Obi One-Two. “This isn’t just a competitive event ... it’s a day to celebrate snowboarding,” Timkey said. “We might be most excited to see the groms (laughs). There are so many young kids here that can really rip, so we’re pretty stoked to see smiles plastered on their faces. Another great thing is that a portion of the proceeds are going to the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program, which is an unbelievable (and really overlooked) aspect at the resort.” The Boardroom Banked is proudly presented by The Boardroom, Holiday Valley, Burton MidAtlantic, Mervin MidAtlantic and Red Bull. A pre-registration party will take place at The Depot Saturday night. For more information and tickets, head to www.boardsandpowder.com or www.holidayvalley.com.

By Caitlin Croft Everyone knows how amazing, rad, and fun Holiday Valley is. But not many hear about the elite athletes it produces. I recently caught up with 14-year-old Bella Bacon, resident shredder. Bella grew up here in Ellicottville, learning to ski at Holiday Valley. Both her parents, William and Christine, were instructors at Jackson Hole, Wyoming back in the day; you could say they were “ski school sweethearts.” After deciding it was time to start a family, the winter sport fanatics moved to Christine’s hometown, Ellicottville. From an early age in Holiday Valley’s Rangers Program, Bella’s first instructor Patty Wolf saw potential. Bella was fearless and loved to ski in the woods and moguls. It wasn’t long before Bella joined the Holiday Valley Freestyle Team. Although she excelled at moguls, it was her growing interest in slopestyle that turned her focus. Slopestyle - a mixture of rails, jumps and other terrain park features - became an official Olympic event in both skiing and snowboarding platforms at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Slopestyle tricks fall into four main categories: spins, grinds, grabs and flips. Demonstrating style while skiing provides the base component of the judging criteria, hence the term “slope-style”. When it comes to style, Bella has it dialed. Right now, Bella’s favorite trick to pull is a back flip. She recently qualified to attempt this trick at Maximise in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec, where they use Japanese technology which provides the same feel as snow, and the air bag allows for little impact when trying out new tricks. Bella’s success in landing this trick follows up last year’s pivotal endorsement on the ski scene. Bella was the recipient of the 6th Annual ‘Spirit of Sarah Scholarship’, which earned her a spot at a freestyle camp held in British Columbia, Canada last June. It was while at this camp that she made a connection with agenda freeski, who’s team trains out of Mount St Louis in Coldwater, Ontario. Fast forward to this season, Bella is reaping the benefits of high-end training on weekends, year round. (But you can find her in the parks at Holiday Valley almost everyday after school.) “I love teaching my friends things and just being out there having fun.” The first competition of this ski season for Bella was held at Waterville Valley Resort, New Hampshire; Bella found herself on the podium in 3rd. The event was a qualifier for ‘The Revolution Tour’ (known as ‘The Rev Tour’). This will take Bella back to Waterville Valley for extended competition, along with stops in Park City, UT and Mammoth Mountain, CA. Another stop on Bella’s competition schedule for this season is the ‘Sending it for Sarah’ event at Blue Mountain. The event is held in memory of Sarah Burke, a pioneer in the freestyle community.

FAST FIVE WITH BELLA BACON 1) What gear are you rocking this season? The City Garage has outfitted me with Full Tilt boots, Line skis, and Pret helmet. 2) Where do you hope to go in your ski career? I have dreams of the 2022 Olympics. Every time an Olympic commercial comes on I get goosebumps. From the age of 9 I have been telling everyone I want to go to the Olympics one day. Hopefully I will qualify for the X-Games in a couple of years. 3) What do you want to be when you grow up? A Physical Therapist or some career in Health & Wellness. I would also love to coach one day and pass on my love of this growing sport. 4) What is your favorite food? How about your favorite color? Sushi. Purple 5) Any animals at home? We have two dogs and a cat. Our newest dog we got last fall is a Corgi.

If you want to keep up with Bella’s season and her experience on The Rev Tour, check out baconskis.com.

YARD SALE

DRY-AGED STEAK

The Yard Sale is the Winery’s newest flavor, released at the beginning of ski season! This semi sweet red is fruity and fun, and the perfect indulgence in a ski town! Enjoy with a casual dinner of burgers and pizza or after a day on the slopes! Stop into the Winery of Ellicottville and give it a try for yourself. Wine tastings are offered daily. When filling out your tasitng card, also be sure to opt for a taste of Spice Spice Baby, another one of the winery’s newer releases. It’s so good!

Enjoy a Dry-Aged Steak with a nice glass of bourbon at the Silver Fox, Ellicottville’s only steakhouse. The Fox’s Certified Angus Beef DryAged Steak is wet-aged for a minimum of 30 days. Through the dry-aged process (which takes an additional 32 days), the beef develops a rounded, earthy scent - somewhat like buttered popcorn - a different sheen and a smooth texture. Flavors become more concentrated and beefier. The Dry-Aged Steak pairs well with an Angels Envy Bourbon Manhattan, which is infused with smoked bacon, orange twist and a Bada Bing cherry.

EBC IN LITTLE VALLEY ELLICOTTVILLE BREWING COMPANY POISED TO OPEN BOTTLING FACILITY, PUB AND ENTERTAINMENT COMPLEX THIS SUMMER By Spencer Timkey

For Peter Kreinheder, the overall strategy for Ellicottville Brewing Company’s growth was simple. The 2013 expansion of Ellicottville’s location provided more food and beverage space with increased brewing capacity in one of the premier ski towns on the East. In nearby Fredonia, he has the college market covered. And the 2016 opening of EBC on Chautauqua gave the brand a summertime, lakeside attraction. So when Southern Tier Brewing decided to discontinue EBC’s bottling contract in 2013, the answer was simple …

and those on horseback can stop. There’s a huge space out back for concerts and weddings. But the really cool thing we’re planning on is The Brewing Sciences Center.”

Open a bottling and packaging facility.

“You know, a lot of kids don’t know what they want to do with their lives, so a lot of it will be geared towards younger people. There are engineers that learn the science of yeast. There are so many things in the beer industry that aren’t even beer oriented. The engineering of valves and variable speed pumps, the process of malting and agronomics of hops, shipping logistics, marketing, promotion and much more.”

“We needed a lot more space to begin bottling in our facility,” Kreinheder, EBC’s owner, said. “We were renting a building by Fitzpatrick & Weller, and at 7,000 square feet, we filled that up pretty quick. But we came across the old Salamanca Beverage Building in Little Valley, which we bought in 2015. We started using it for shipping and receiving, box erection and packaging — all the while cleaning it up.” When Kreinheder bought the building, the creativity started flowing. An old industrial building located 8 minutes from the Village of Ellicottville, and one that annually over 600,000 cars pass by. Instead of limiting it to just a bottling and shipping brewery, they could turn it into a familyfriendly destination. “The number of breweries has exploded in the past 5 years — from 3,000 to over 8,000 — so the market is saturated, but not to a point where growth isn’t viable,” he said. “Opening a bottling facility isn’t something you do overnight. This has been in the works since November of 2015.” After getting everything in line that year, he contracted Esau Hueber (out of Germany, and the same that built/installed the Ellicottville brewery) to design and build the brewhouse, and Krones (out of Italy) for the bottling. After a year of construction, crews of Italians and Germans came over to assist local tradesmen in the install. EBC’s Ellicottville locations has two 120 barrel tanks and six 60 barrel fermenter tanks — the new facility has five 180 barrel tanks. For reference: one 180 barrel tank (which are made in Oregon and are 16-feet, 9-inches tall) equals 22 pallets of beer, and there are 72 cases per pallet. So drink up, folks. Not to mention, the automation of the bottle, label, and package process. The German-engineered, Italian-made Kosme bottling machine has over 1,000,000 working parts and can churn out 200 bottles a minute when working at maximum capacity. The bottling machine, as well as the assembly line it’s attached to, automates the entire process: from bottling, to X-Raying, to packaging. The 75,000 square foot Little Valley location is a 4-vessel facility, compared to the 3-vessel of Ellicottville (this means the brewers gain an extra two hours of work a day). It exhumes efficiency, boasting bigger hop dosers, a yeast propagator and an Economizer. I won’t give away what all of these things are … you’ll need to do a facility tour. “What’s really neat are the possibilities,” Kreinheder said. “We’ve got this huge building sitting on 8 acres of land nestled right up to the side of a hill. We’ll open it up for conferences. There’s space for additional snowmobile tracks. It’s right on the Pat McGee trail, so mountain bikers

Kreinheder was quick to point out that this won’t be a museum, but a hands-on, fully functional center to learn about the sciences of brewing beer. Think the Corning Glass Museum — how glass is made and its functions.

The oldest part of the building is a wide open upstairs, with steel I-beams and exposed brick. Crews dismantled old steam pipes and heating ducts and installed windows for natural light. It is beautifully … old and industrial. Back downstairs, the framework for the Public Pub — the on-site restaurant and tasting room — has been installed. A limited, farm-fresh kitchen menu will offer visitors food to complement the beers, with seating both inside and out. With most of the brewery installation completed the past three months and commissioning next month, the Little Valley facility is on schedule to begin test batches this spring. If all goes according to plan, they’ll be brewing by May, putting out product by June, with the Public Pub opened by the end of June. “While the craft market as a whole has slowed down, we’re seeing growth in the 21- to 30-yearold market,” he said. “Anymore, they don’t want to slam a 30 pack of Busch. They want to have a couple of beers and come for the socialization aspect of it — that cool, fun brewery experience. Eventually, we would like to have transport buses from the Ellicottville location to the facility for a dual beer tour adventure.” The most admirable aspect of Kreinheder’s newest endeavor is the economic impact it will have on the local community. Increased traffic to and from the facility bring people right into the town. When it’s all said and done, he’ll have added an additional 20-25 full-time positions and 20+ hospitality positions over the next 5 years. And all of the work being done inside the facility? By Cattaraugus County tradesmen (and the terrific process piping team of Bright’s Mechanical out of Erie County). “This is our connecting point, the centralized location,” he said. “With Ellicottville, Bemus and Fredonia, Little Valley is kind of the middle of the triangle. It makes sense for us, it makes sense for the community and our employees. We now have the opportunity to not only bring our brewing and packaging to a very high industry standard, but create another vibrant, familyfriendly tourism hub for the region.” For more information and updates on EBC’s Little Valley facility, follow them on Facebook and Instagram or head to their website at www.ellicottvillebrewing.com.

WELLNESS

cheers to a better YOU.

OUTDOOR FITNESS FUSION: FUN FITNESS ON THE MOVE. By Dash Hegeman

According to a study conducted by U.S. News, 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by the 2nd week in February. So with January now behind us, it’s time to do a check-in on your resolutions. For those who promised to spend less time in front of a screen, or to exercise more, or to spend more time in nature, there is a new business in Ellicottville that can help you achieve those goals and more. So whether you made those kind of resolutions or not, read on because we could all use a little more time in the great outdoors. Melinda Jones loves being outside. “My favorite places to work out in the area are Holiday Valley, McCarty State Forest, Little Rock City, Zoar Valley, Allegany State Park and various parts of the Finger Lakes Trail,” Jones explains enthusiastically. “The Ellicottville and surrounding areas are saturated with hiking and mountain bike trails that are well kept by various organizations such as WNYMBA (Western New York Mountain Bike Association) and the Finger Lakes Trail clubs. The views of the slopes, gorges and vistas in the area are breathtaking. There are so many miles of trails that guests are unaware of.” It doesn’t matter if she’s hiking, biking, snowshoeing, or going for a leisurely jog, Melinda just prefers to be outside in nature. So it should come as no surprise to find out that Melinda is the energy behind Outdoor Fitness Fusion, an endeavor that allows her to share her zest for physical activity and her love of nature with others who are looking for a little help to get them started on a more active lifestyle. Every year, Ellicottville turns into more and more of a four-season destination area. Melinda recognized that, while there are plenty of traditional fitness opportunities in the area, there is still a need for something in the outdoor fitness landscape. “I like to get people on the trail but also push them physically,” Jones said. “Hiking, snowshoeing, mountain biking and other outdoor activities naturally provide a solid cardio and strength training calorie burn while heightening the senses and calming the mind.” A full-time employee of Holiday Valley, Melinda has found nothing but support from management at Holiday Valley. “I’ve already been approached by Dennis Eshbaugh, President of Holiday Valley, to conduct a guided hike for a group of Holiday Valley guests,” said Jones. And while she is working to slowly build her business, she is not adverse to it eventually being her primary focus. For now though, she is very happy with it being a part-time business that allows her to share her passion with others. As she delves further into her business motivations, Melinda explains that ultimately she really just wanted to share her passion with others. She spoke with a number of people who explained to her that they weren’t totally comfortable out on the local trails on their own. Given her knowledge of the area and due to the countless amount of time she had spent navigating the local trails, Melinda saw an opening to help people experience the thrill that she felt when she was outside immersed in nature. “I enjoy the outdoors and love sharing my passion for outdoor fitness with others. Many people don’t feel comfortable navigating the trails on their own so I offer the opportunity to get them on the trails without fear of getting lost. I take the work out of hiking by coordinating and leading the hikes. Ellicottville is making progress to be come a four-seasons destination. Guided hikes and outdoor fitness opportunities fit nicely into that vision.” While she does offer one-on-one hikes, Melinda prefers classes to be in a group format. “The outdoor fitness is typically in a group setting with friends, family, various groups or with business colleagues,” explains Jones. “I do offer one-on-one hikes as well. The classes I teach are typically a blend of community participants.” To further the idea of community participation, Melinda went on to say, “I would LOVE to reach out to the Cattaraugus County Department of Child and Family Services to implement guided hikes for children in Foster care or children who need additional support who could benefit from a positive outlet like hiking and other outdoor activities. I also would like to continue to provide fitness classes in smaller communities such as Cattaraugus where there may be limited access to these types of services.” Melinda’s fitness classes typically run about one hour and are usually booked for month long sessions where the participants can drop-in at a higher rate or purchase the monthly package at a discounted rate. The guided hikes can range from one hour to all day excursions. “My schedule is flexible and I can typically accommodate for client needs,” said Jones. “Holiday Valley has been more than supportive of my endeavor and will work with me regarding any schedule needs I have to take a group on a hike.” The next time you find yourself atop a treadmill or elliptical machine, wondering how much longer you have to go before you meet your daily step quota, remember that Outdoor Fitness Fusion is out there and is waiting for you to decide to take your normal fitness routine and give it a new twist. The great outdoors awaits and Melinda Jones wants to take you there. For more information or to book your next outdoor fitness adventure, head to www.outdoorfitnessfusion.com or contact Melinda directly at 716-664-1000, email MelindaJonesACE@yahoo.com.

Outdoor Fitness Fusion blends the excitement of outdoor recreation with the tenacity of indoor fitness to promote overall wellness.

SAYING GOODBYE

Hampshire Mills would LOVE to see YOU ... come share your stories One of Western New York’s best kept secrets is closing its doors this spring after four generations and 50 years in business By Mary Heyl

The photo above, taken five years ago during Hampshire Mills’ 45th anniversary, showcases the heart and soul of a four-generation business. The Zaprowski family will say goodbye this spring, as current owners Mike and Sue are ready to retire. One of the first outlet stores of its kind, Hampshire Mills will be saying “goodbye” to its customers this March after fifty years in business. Owners Mike and Sue Zaprowski will be retiring this spring, but are fortunate to have many fond memories of the people who became a part of their multiple locations over the years. Now the last remaining location, the Salamanca store at 890 Broad Street, will remain open over the next few weeks, and customers are invited to stop in, say farewell, and share their stories of this family business that has been a part of the community since 1968. While customers who have patronized Hampshire Mills over the past decade may be solely familiar with the Salamanca store, Hampshire Mills actually had 5 different locations, which began with the current building in 1968. Around the time the reservoir was being filled in, Mike’s father, Carl “Cubby” Zaprowski, built the store and originally sold canoes, fishing equipment, sail boats and motor boats during his first couple years in business. The store nicely complemented his motel next door, Tour O-Tel, where he met Jack McGregor, whose uncle owned a woolen mill in town. McGregor frequently stayed at the hotel, as he brought goods with him from Philadelphia where he was a salesman for the woolen mill, and he and Cubby became good friends. The two men soon formed a partnership, and Cubby’s store became their store: Hampshire Knitting Mills Outlet, which began selling overrun mill sweaters, denim, irregulars, one-of-a-kind items and more. Eventually, the business grew and Cubby opened locations in Olean and Salamanca, which his wife, Thelma, managed for several years, making her famous dishcloths that customers still look for (and are now made by Mike’s daughter-inlaw and their employee, Diana). In 1974, Cubby’s son Mike, a teacher in Binghamton, moved to Erie, PA to join the family business where he opened the Erie store; later he also opened the Jamestown and Fredonia stores. When the Erie store opened in 1974, Sue, a stay-at-home mom with young children, became a part of the business as the bookkeeper but later became the buyer for the Salamanca store’s gift shop. Over the years, Hampshire Mills has evolved with the times, as few woolen mills remain in the United States and manufacturing has shifted overseas. The Salamanca location added a gift shop, which sells clothing and souvenir items from Salamanca and Allegany State Park, as well as gift items related to Salamanca’s Native American culture. In recent

years, Hampshire Mills’ top-selling items include sportswear from Columbia and Woolrich, outerwear jackets from Columbia and Killtec, footwear from Merrell, Columbia and Sorel, and slippers from Acorn and Minnetonka. Many customers also enjoy the store’s collection of kitchen items and cookie cutters, Melissa & Doug toys, locally made soaps, greeting cards and jewelry, as well as delicious food items like maple syrup, McCutcheon’s jams and jellies, and Bone Suckin’ sauces. Along with her friendly dog, Olive, Jenna (Mike and Sue’s daughter), can often be found at the store, which she has been a part of for many years, in different roles. In high school, Jenna began as a sales clerk at her family’s business. After college and working as the buyer for the Erie Sports Store, she returned to the area to manage the Salamanca store. In addition to managing the store, Jenna is also the buyer for the clothing, footwear, and accessories lines, as well as manager of the website, Facebook page, and e-newsletter, a responsibility she took over from Sue, who created the store’s original mailed newsletter. “We’ve often been referred to as ‘the best kept secret in Western New York’ because of our big selection of clothing and gifts. I’ve just loved hearing the stories over the years from people who grew up shopping in our stores, buying their kids’ coats and clothing here, and even shopping for their grandchildren,” said Jenna, who will take many fond memories with her. “We invite everyone to stop in and say goodbye, because we love hearing the stories.” With the past decade’s spike in online sales and big box retailers, family-owned small businesses are fewer and farther between, and Hampshire Mills has certainly set the standard for success over the years. Even Jenna’s son, Marcus, has worked at the store, making Hampshire Mills a four-generation family business - a rare business, indeed! After so many years in business, Sue is looking forward to spending more time with family during her retirement, as well as traveling and becoming even more involved in the community. “I will miss the customers and everything that makes our business in Salamanca unique,” said Sue, who still chuckles over out-of-town customers looking for teepees and asking numerous questions about Salamanca’s location on the Seneca Nation reservation. Hampshire Mills, located at 890 Broad Street, is open from 10am-5pm Monday through Saturday, and 11am-4pm on Sunday. Stop in soon to shop for sale items and Valentine’s Day gifts, and to enjoy one last visit to Hampshire Mills.

Snocross

To p r a c e r s r e t u r n t o S a l a m a n c a , N Y for two full days of high flying, full-throttle action By Pat Morgan

PRO-LITE, PRO OPEN CLASS, WOMEN’S DIVISIONS NEW THIS YEAR: SNOWBIKE DIVISION ... TICKETS ON SALE NOW As you may have noticed, the majority of focal points in this publication tend to revolve around the ski and snowboard culture that is so passionately supported by Ellicottville and its surrounding communities. We’d be remiss, however, not to spotlight some of the other exciting happenings occurring just outside the village, which draw visitors into our communities from near and far. In just a few short weeks, the sights and sounds of pure horsepower will be in the air, as the U.S. Air Force Snocross National roars onto the property of the Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino in Salamanca, NY, February 16-17. For years, crowds have been treated to some incredible racing and fan experiences, so let’s get you up to speed on everything you need to know to attend the race. First and foremost, let’s shed some light on what snocross is all about. We all know a thing or two about snowmobiles, having seen them on the trails or fields of our region and at the resorts we frequent. Now, imagine adding a generous amount of horsepower (like, hang on for dear life amount), mix it with the competitive, head-to-head racing of motocross, and voila! You have yourself the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series, which first caught the attention of viewers nationwide during the 1998 X-Games as a never-before-seen exhibition event to many. This heart pounding sport continues to grow, with pro, amateur and women’s divisions, due to their passionate fan base who travel from all over to catch their favorite riders tame tracks around North America. Born in the Midwest, snocross was known for the iconic (and cold!) tracks in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Not to the surprise of anyone who has attended previous Salamanca races, our local event is now spoken of throughout the industry as a favorite stop on the 8-stop tour, by both fans and competitors alike! This season, AMSOIL Championship Snocross even expanded to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, which needs no introduction to the many avid skiers and riders who read this publication. Now that you have the back story, let’s give you information on what to watch for at the upcoming event. It’s important to know that these days start early, as there are a number of amateur divisions which compete prior to the big dogs, spanning men’s and women’s riders from 8 years old and up. These race days are long, so if you’d like to catch all the action, you’d best be trackside bright and early (and dress warm!) There are three primary divisions - the Pro Lite Division (smaller, more nimble machines) and the Pro Open Division (power, power, power) and a Women’s class. In the Pro Lites, you’ll want to keep an eye on Aki Pihlaja, Daniel Benham, and Jacob Yurk, who is currently leading in the points standings. On the Pro Open side of the pits, Logan Christian, Kody Kamm, and repeated X-Games gold medalist/household name Tucker Hibbert will have all eyes glued to their sleds. Hibbert has often remarked that the Salamanca stop is one of his favorites in the series, which is quite the compliment from one of the true superstars of the event. New this year, there’s a snowbike division as well … (think high powered dirt bikes with snowmobile tracks) … not to be missed! If you can’t make it during the day on Friday/Saturday, not to worry! The opening ceremonies and finals for all divisions start at 6pm each evening, wrapping up by 10pm, making this a family-friendly event. So there you have it - you’re now officially outfitted with everything you need to know to attend the upcoming U.S. Air Force Snocross National. There’s just one thing left to do - purchase your tickets TODAY! You can do so through snocross.com or through senecaalleganycasino.com as well, where you can also book some great stay & play packages to take full advantage of your visit. Don’t forget, in addition to their massive gaming facility and mouth watering restaurants, they’ll also have a vendor village relating to the event this year, which will feature an all new Native American Craft Vendor section.

“JUKE BOX HERO” FOREIGNER: ICONIC ROCK BAND RETURNS TO SENECA ALLEGANY RESORT AND CASINO

A Conversation with Tom Gimbel HULICK: You are heading back to Seneca Allegany Casino for a show on March 3 … GIMBEL: Yes! It’s kind of like spring then … well almost. HULICK: Well, not really. Haven’t you heard we have two seasons here … winter and construction, which is one week in July. GIMBEL: (laughs) That’s funny! Sure … western New York at Seneca … I remember now. We’ve played there a bunch of times and I went there skiing when I was a kid once. I grew up in New Jersey, so we are cousins you could say. HULICK: You can’t go anywhere it seems these days without hearing Foreigner on a soundtrack, a TV show finale … and on and on … you guys are everywhere. Aren’t you sick of yourselves yet? (laughs) GIMBEL: (laughs) No. We love it! It’s fantastic! We have several new generations that are discovering this music. When I was a kid it was a tradition to go into the attic and look through your parent’s records and now kids are doing it and they are finding old rock records like Foreigner, Bad Company and more. This music keeps reinvigorating itself and we are delighted that people still have an appreciation for it, because we sure do. I think the songs have held up really well over time.

...................... SATURDAY | MARCH 3 @ 7pm By Melanie Hulick Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 3, 2018 to join iconic rock band Foreigner as they take the stage at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino in Salamanca, NY. This marks the band’s 40th anniversary which has garnered some of the best and most well known songs in the music business. I had the pleasure of talking with band member and saxophone player Tom Gimbel recently who joined Foreigner in 1992. Gimbel and I talked about how new generations of fans are being seen at their concerts and how that keeps the band, and their music, to continually reinvigorate themselves. This band has some pretty impressive stats behind their name including having two all time favorite rock ballads … the global number one hit “I Want To Know What Love Is” and the record breaking “Waiting For A Girl Like You”. Add in songs like “Juke Box Hero”, “Hot Blooded”, “Urgent”, “Cold As Ice” and “Head Games” and you can understand why this band has had staying power on Classic Rock and Adult Contemporary radio stations for decades and are still heard today. Keeping up with the band has gone to new heights as they have racked up over 400 million YouTube views and counting, as well as 75 million albums sold. Members of the band have changed through the years, but their unmistakable sound, heavy in brass laden songs and some of the best saxophone solos, like in the song “Urgent”, this band is not slowing down or losing their fan appeal any time soon. Marking their 40th anniversary milestone, founder and Songwriter Hall of Famer Mick Jones is joining the band on the road … making this a “must see” musical event of 2018.

......................

Tickets to Foreigner’s performance at Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca start at $45 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany). For more information on the band, visit www.foreigneronline.com.

HULICK: I read that downloads of your music went up 400%! That’s crazy! GIMBEL: Isn’t that amazing? HULICK: You did a full orchestral show of your songs recently in Switzerland for your 40th anniversary and that included a choir as well, didn’t it? GIMBEL: Yes. We did a whole album with a concert symphony orchestra and a giant, massive choir … there must have been 80 people in that choir! That will be released sometime in the spring or summer I think. There will be a DVD of it. HULICK: A few weeks ago my husband and I were listening to your Greatest Hits CD and when the song “Urgent” came on, I said we need to turn it up because the best sax solo is in this song. GIMBEL: YEAH!! HULICK: This was before this interview was even scheduled and when I found out I was going to talk to you, the sax player, I was thrilled! GIMBEL: (laughs) How cool! I’m glad you like that. It’s funny … when I am playing that one people actually know it so well they are doing the air sax along with me. Even actor/comedian Jack Black does it on YouTube. So you are in good company. HULICK: How many shows do you typically do a year? GIMBEL: About 100 to 120 every year. It keeps us busy and out of trouble, and this is what we signed up for … this is what we’ve worked towards and we wouldn’t have it any other way … we wouldn’t want it any other way. We are so grateful people want to come out and jam with us and rock with us. We’re the kind of band you don’t come to see and just sit there and watch. We like to get everyone involved. We want the singing and dancing and the hooting and hollering going on, and that’s what our singer, Kelly Hansen, wants. He won’t settle for anything less. HULICK: What else can we expect from your show? GIMBEL: Expect to hear all the Foreigner songs you hope to see us play, we’re gonna play them all … we’re not going to leave anything out. It’s high energy like I just mentioned our singer just jumps around and gets people into it and we will do a couple acoustic songs and we have a high school choir come up at the end. That’s really cool because it gives us a chance to raise awareness of funding being cut from music school programs. HULICK: What’s your favorite song to play live? GIMBEL: “Take Me To The River” by Al Greene. Oh! You mean a Foreigner song. (laughs) It has to be “Urgent”. I get out there with my saxophone and just lose myself. I don’t know where I am. It’s like clocking out … after the song’s over I’m like what happened. I need the smelling salts. (laughs) HULICK: Can I make a special request? Since that is my favorite Foreigner song can you do it in the beginning of your show and then a second time as the encore? GIMBEL: (laughs) If I had my way we’d do it in the middle too! (laughs) HULICK: I’ll go for that. GIMBEL: (laughs) Would you consider management? You can be my manager and get that done as part of our contract. (laughs)

RAY EVANS SENECA THEATER PRESENTS: PIPPIN Pippin is a musical performance which tells the story of Pippin, a young prince who longs to find passion and adventure in this life. As heir to the Frankish throne, Pippin seeks the true secrets of happiness. He seeks it in the glories of battlefield, the temptations of the flesh, and the intrigues of political power - this after disposing of his father King Charlemagne the Great. Berthe, Pippin’s saucy grandmother, is a brassy broad full of wisdom, grace and sass who tries to help Pippin by encouraging him to live his life to the fullest. Other characters from peasants to a baron will grace the stage. In the end, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in the extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the special moments that happen every day. This first production of the Cattaraugus County Living Arts Association 2018 season will feature a multi-talented cast hailing from communities across the Southern Tier of New York and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, book by Roger O. Hirson. Pippin was originally produced on the Broadway Stage by Stuart Ostrow. Dates of the performance are Feb. 16, 17, 23, and 24 at 7pm, and Feb. 18 and 25 at 2pm. Tickets are $15 general admission. The Ray Evans Seneca Theater is located at 10 Main Street, Salamanca, NY. For more information call 814-366-1575 or visit www.rayevensenecatheater.org. Tickets may be purchased online at www.showclix.com/event/pippin2018.

the program to anyone with special needs. Michael, Emily’s boyfriend of 14 years who also has Down syndrome, has been skiing with the program for the past 5 years and absolutely loves it. Racich invites everyone to take part in Feb. 24th’s LASP fundraiser, as there is more to the event than just the races. The food tent will be selling hot dogs, chips, and other goodies, and this year’s event includes a beer/wine tent. There is also a large silent auction every year, which includes prize baskets donated by local businesses and individuals. Each year, raffle tickets are sold for three prizes: first prize is a season pass to Holiday Valley, second prize is a $500 travel voucher from Southwest Airlines, and third prize is a brand new pair of skis donated by Dekdebruns! Tickets are $5 each or 6 for $25 and are available now at the main Ski School desk and at the Lounsbury building (located next to the Tannenbaum Lodge). Even if you can’t make it to the fundraiser, buying raffle tickets is a great way to support the event, as the winner need not be present to win! To learn more about the Penguin Paddle and LASP, visit https://skilasp.wixsite.com/ lounsburyadaptive and join the hundreds of paddlers at this annual event! Those interested in signing up for lessons with LASP (must be reserved in advance) can email laspski@hotmail.com. Be sure to follow the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program on Facebook, too!
