716-474-5646 By Louisa Benatovich There’s nothing quite like the glorious sensation of skiing down a hill, the crisp wind biting your cheeks, the ground a blur beneath your feet. Skiing, many say, is as close as it gets to flying. It’s for this reason that many come to Ellicottville, itching to get on the slopes. Skiing is freedom, and here, when the ground is covered in sparkling powder and the skies are a cloudless blue, skiing is magic.

The team at the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program, or LASP, has made it their life’s mission to bring this magic to everyone. Because of them, people who never dreamt they would ever ski can know what it feels like to fly. Completely non-profit, LASP offers adaptive ski lessons to children and adults with virtually all disabilities, both physical and cognitive. Commonly encountered disabilities include spinal cord injuries, amputations, Down Syndrome, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, visual impairment, autism, and developmental delay. LASP was founded in 1988 in memory of Bill Lounsbury. Bill was a member of the Ski Patrol at the Holiday Valley Ski Resort who lost a leg to cancer. He refused to give up the sport he loved and taught himself to ski on one leg. Since its founding, LASP has grown from four instructors teaching 14 students in a total of 35 lessons to over 40 instructors who collectively teach more than 250 lessons during the course of a single ski season. All instructors are volunteers who are specially trained in adaptive ski teaching methods. Over half of these instructors are certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA). Bill Bredenberg, LASP’s director, has been involved in the program for over 17 years. “My first lesson was with a man paralyzed from the waist down,” he says. “He had been involved in a car accident and had to sit-ski. He was tethered from behind by one of the finest instructors Lounsbury has known, the now late Dick Granger. At first, it was very difficult to balance, to control the man’s turns and speed. We were at the top of Tannenbaum; he almost fell many times. It was trial and error, and when he finally got it, the parents were in tears. They never dreamed that their son would be able to do a sport like this.” “I see this every time,” says Bredenberg, “That sense of accomplishment, the joy. Every lesson, we change someone’s life.” Ann Chamberlain, local resident and math teacher at Ellicottville Central School, volunteers with Lounsbury for this very reason. “I became a Lounsbury Adaptive ski instructor because I love to ski and I thought it would be fun to help other people learn to do it too,” she says. “I also liked the idea of volunteering – an opportunity to give back, I thought. What I have found is an amazing group of kids (and the parents who bring them) and adults who come out to learn to ski, but give me so much more than I could ever give them. There is nothing like the smile on a child’s face sliding down the hill, feeling the freedom to move in a way that they may not normally experience or the look of accomplishment on one of our adult student’s faces when they conquer that next harder hill.” To truly conquer those hills, LASP requires special equipment. The bi-ski (pictured) allows individuals unable to stand the ability to balance and ski. These life-changing hunks of metal can weigh up to 75 lbs without a human strapped in. With the student inside, bi-skis must be

D E K D EBRUN INTRO DUCES THE AP EX SKI

ELLICOTTVI LLE’ S I CO N I C S K I TREE IS H ERE TO S TAY Spencer Timkey

Most villages across the United States put up a Christmas Tree to celebrate the holiday season. It’s more tradition than anything else, and Ellicottville was no different. The tree would go up in time for the annual ‘Christmas in Ellicottville’ event, it’d be lit, and … we would go about our regular holiday festivities. It was just another Christmas Tree … until last year. The brainchild of John Nelson, the village would soon be blessed with not just another Christmas Tree. It would be a tree made of skis. Immediately, the tree was a massive success. People flocked from around western New York to be mesmerized by the lights, the snow and the fact that it’s made up entirely of skis. Mary Heyl Greg Dekdebrun is bringing something new to the busy thoroughfare of downtown Ellicottville, where his Dekdebruns Apex Store is located. True, Dekdebrun’s business is not new to Washington Street, but he has taken on a new challenge there. “When I decided to basically downsize the business, I still wanted to be involved in the ski industry,” Dekdebrun explained. “So I decided to continue with the Apex ski boots and the idea came to me to design an Apex ski.” Now in his 16th year in his current location of 18 Washington Street (Upper), Dekdebrun gained a strong following when he started carrying the unique Apex ski boots. “Apex boots have been around for 13 years,” Dekdebrun explained. “I was the first dealer for Apex ski boots 13 years ago, and I am currently the third largest dealer in the U.S. for them.” Many compare the Apex ski boot to that of a snowboarder’s boot, in terms of both design and comfort. While traditional ski boots are stiff, uncomfortable and difficult to walk around in, Apex ski boots are designed with comfort in mind with “medial support that is firm, consistent and very responsive” and a chassis that is open in front for easy entry. According to Dekdebrun, “Apex ski boots are noted for being warm, comfortable, convenient and they perform!” He went on to explain the boots’ signature three-part system. “The inner boot is the heat-moldable part. Then they have what’s called a walking boot, and that is what looks like a snowboarding boot. You can walk around in that. And then that goes into what they call a chassis, and the chassis is where the performance comes from.” Dekdebrun went on to explain that the heat-moldable liners are one of the primary features that set the boot apart from others on the market. “They can be reheated multiple times, and even with a used boot, you can end up with a custom fit,” Dekdebrun said. His business also takes ski boots on trade, so customers will find that even a used Apex ski boot is still a great option because of the heat-moldable liners. Inspired by the great products he was already carrying in the Apex ski boots, Dekdebrun decided to branch out and design skis that would coordinate with both the men’s and women’s boots. “There is a company in Utah called Goode, and they make a carbon-fiber ski, which is what I’m using,” Dekdebrun explained. He then began working with a local graphic designer, Greg Culver, to design the graphics for the men’s and women’s skis. “What sets them apart from other skis is the fact that they’re a carbon ski,” Dekdebrun continued. “That makes them very lightweight, yet strong because of the carbon. Basically, I designed them so that the men’s graphics match the men’s Apex boots, and the women’s graphics match the women’s Apex boots. And then I bought bindings that would color coordinate with the skis and boots.” There are two women’s models and two men’s models in the new skis that will be available beginning in December. “I will have demos available in the new skis, and I have demos available in the Apex ski boots,” Dekdebrun said. “I am also selling accessories like boot bags and ski bags from a company called Kulkea, and socks, bindings for the skis and boot warmers. I’m still doing custom foot beds, like I’ve done for years. And I’m carrying Leki poles!” Dekdebrun’s business has been a part of the Ellicottville community for many years, and he is looking forward to a snowy season. “I was born and raised in Buffalo. Basically, I’m a second generation in the business,” Dekdebrun explained. “My dad opened his first store in 1946 in Buffalo, but he opened the store down here in 1962. We’ve been all over the place in Ellicottville, but this is the 16th year in our location.” Dekdebruns Apex Store’s hours have changed since Dekdebrun has entered semi-retirement. “I am working mainly by appointments now,” he said. “People can go to my website, www.dekdebruns.com, and there is a tab there for making an appointment. You can also call the store at 716-699-1140.”

“John had the idea to do a ski tree years ago, and thought Ellicottville should have the best Christmas Tree in western New York,” said Ellicottville Events owner (and John’s wife) Sam Nelson. “He and Tyler Burns bounced ideas back and forth until they figured something out that might work. They met with Maple Grove Enterprises about making the base and rungs to hold the skis. After all of that, he decided it was time to go for it.” Ski Trees are iconic in other ski towns. Telluride, in Colorado, has one that is incredibly impressive. The engineering, upkeep and ability to build something out of so many individual pieces is almost as impressive as - again - building a Christmas Tree out of old skis. When John and Tyler decided to go through with the idea, they needed help. With Burns being a snowboarder and Nelson being a dualboarder, it’s not like they had a hundred pair of old skis around (for the tree to work best, they had to be old straight skis to fit within the rungs consistently.) They put the word out, and the village responded. Old skis came flooding in, and they began stockpiling. Not all was well and good, however. After months of hard work and the tree successfully constructed and placed (with the help of Apex Construction), Nelson was informed that its current location (in front of the 1887 Building) couldn’t be sustainable long-term. The idea of having to say goodbye to the Ski Tree after the overwhelmingly positive response from the public, was one that Nelson knew he couldn’t face. Thousands of visitors had made their way to the Ski Tree for a photo op over the winter and summer months (including country singer Charlie Daniels). So the mission began to find a new location, and to keep the Ski Tree alive. “The most unbelievable thing about this entire Ski Tree journey was our Christmas In July fundraiser,” Nelson said. “When we found out the tree needed to be moved or taken down, it galvanized the village. The outpouring of support and generosity of our town blew us away.” Organized and executed in under two weeks by Ellicottville Events, Christmas in July (hosted at Madigan’s) raised the amount of money needed to move the tree to its permanent home, on the lawn of the post office. Donations by local contractors to build a permanent concrete base and money raised to maintain it means the iconic Ski Tree isn’t going anywhere. “Between the fundraiser and the amount of photos we’ve seen with the tree, we’re so proud of that,” Nelson said. “It’s become a staple of our community and we couldn’t be happier.”

LOUNSBURY ADAPTIVE SKI CAMPAIGN cont. from page 03 hoisted onto a chairlift, often causing wear-and-tear on the instructors’ backs and bodies. This year, LASP is looking to the future. The Dynamique Bi-Ski is specially designed for persons who struggle with disabilities such as amputations, spinal cord injuries, and cerebral palsy. Costing over $7,000, it will be the lightest and most effective bi-ski yet. “The Dynamique was 20 years in the coming,” says Bredenberg. “It will be easier for staff to load and control.”

#GIVEADAPTIVESPORTS CAMPAIGN

#GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after (U.S.) Thanksgiving to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate. “We’re using this nationally-celebrated day to kick off our month-long #GiveAdaptiveSports campaign,” explains Kara Lounsbury Elias, #GivingTuesday Coordinator. “To purchase the bi-ski, we have set a goal of $8,000.” This season, LASP asks campaign donors to consider a $30 gift to mark the 30th anniversary of this marvelous non-profit. With 30 days to make an impact, donors can forever change the lives of children and adults with cognitive and physical disabilities. The campaign runs from Tuesday, Nov. 27th (#GivingTuesday) through Dec. 26th. With the snow finally settling, Lounsbury Adaptive Ski students and instructors are excited to get their season started. Thanks to Holiday Valley’s ongoing sponsorship and support from people like you, LASP will continue to inspire smiles, change lives, and make dreams come true.

LOOK GOOD - FEEL GOOD - BE INSPIRED AVA GRACE FASHIONS: NEW LOCATION! A growing business fills a larger storefront in the center of the village

GALLERY 14731: ART MEETS YOGA “Yoga at the Gallery” debuts this month OPEN HOUSE DEC. 28TH WITH SARAH TOBIAS

JESSICA MAYNARD-GILBERT, OWNER By Mary Heyl

By Spencer Timkey

Just a few weeks ago, Ava Grace Fashions celebrated the grand re-opening of its store as it moved from 10 Washington Street to 24 Washington Street. “We’re just excited to be in the new space, have things spread out more, make it easier for people to shop and make it easier for us to help people find what they’re looking for,” said owner Jessica Maynard-Gilbert. “It worked out so perfectly because with the timing of the move, the first day I was open in the new space was my birthday, October 24!”

At their purest forms, art and yoga soothe the soul. Whether it’s finding yourself mesmerized by an aerial photo of the sun coming up or connecting the mind and body with yoga, these are things that can help take the stress of everyday life away. Emily Hettrick, owner of Gallery 14731 in downtown Ellicottville, and Sarah Tobias, a Human Resources rep at a Buffalo-area physician’s group, are here to bring you a stellar combination of art and yoga.

Although the location is new, Ava Grace Fashions is not new to Ellicottville. The business actually began three years ago as an online store out of Maynard-Gilbert’s attic! An Ellicottville resident, Maynard-Gilbert has a strong background in sales and marketing, and began with makeup and jewelry. “There was a business in Ellicottville that wasn’t really looking to leave but heard what I was doing and offered me her space,” Maynard-Gilbert explained. “She had some health issues and was able to close, so I was able to take over her space and finish out her lease. We stayed in that space for three years.” Maynard-Gilbert filled that space with fashionable clothing, jewelry, decorative items, slippers, hats, sunglasses and other accessories. “Then I learned about this new opportunity because Earth Arts was retiring after 41 years,” she said of the new location. “I just inquired about the space, and it worked out well. I knew it would be a good move for us because it’s a better space with bigger windows and more visibility.” The busy mom can definitely relate to women who may feel somewhat less than confident when it comes to fashion and trying a new look. “I was never that super-stylish, fashionista girl,” MaynardGilbert laughed. “That’s why I can relate to women who just kind of have a hard time feeling confident putting together that outfit.”

Yoga at the Gallery, a pop-up yoga class, will take place throughout the winter at Gallery 14731. Led by Tobias with the blessing of Hettrick, Yoga at the Gallery aims to bring new people into the gallery and showcase the benefits of yoga. They’re hosting an open house on Friday, December 28th to give people more information and introduce themselves. “My yoga practice started in college and was something I gravitated towards for years,” Tobias said. “It wasn’t until my senior year that I began a regular practice. I went to my first yoga training in August of 2015 and began teaching a few months after that.” Tobias teaches Baptiste style yoga, which is power yoga vinyasa flow. Ultimately, the goal is to find the connection between your mind and body, and to give you space to gain some clarity. As in, don’t think about your day or your thoughts just let them go for awhile.

To that end, Maynard-Gilbert said, “Ava Grace is all about helping women build some confidence and feel really good about themselves. We do that through having comfortable, affordable clothing and having a really easy way to put together a look.” She and her employees share the “1, 2, 3” style guide to help customers get started.

“I teach about four times a week at Power Yoga Buffalo and at HARBORCENTER, and practice yoga about 5 times a week. Yoga at the Gallery is something I am super excited about. I’m a ski patroller at HoliMont, and my family and I spend basically every weekend in Ellicottville. We love the village, the people and really just being here. I thought what a great idea it would be to share my love for yoga in a place I also love so much.”

Number one begins with basic pieces in neutral colors. Next, number two adds the fashionable element with popular patterns for the current season. “Right now, plaids and camouflage are really popular,” Maynard-Gilbert said. Number three completes the outfit with details, such as jewelry or a scarf. “We love it when someone comes in and lets us help them come up with a few new outfits. It’s a lot of fun!” said Maynard-Gilbert.

Tobias and Hettrick have known each other for quite some time now, so the collaboration made sense. After Hettrick completed her studies in museum studies and arts administration, she opened the gallery in 2015. Since opening, she’s done a fantastic job of curating what’s in her gallery, whether it be Dan Aldrich’s aerial drone photography or Peter Fowler’s Buffalo-inspired paintings.

Those who are looking for the perfect holiday gift will be sure to find it at Ava Grace – and MaynardGilbert also has the perfect solution to let her customers’ loved ones know exactly what is on their list. Customers can create their own wish list, on which they indicate the items they’d like to receive and include the name(s) and contact information for prospective shoppers. Those who stop in to create a wish list will receive 10% off an item that day. Maynard-Gilbert will contact the listed shoppers; those who makes a purchase from the list will receive free shipping, either to the shopper’s address or to the recipient’s address.

“We’re getting artist work from all over the country, and we’ve really been focusing on handmade and unique holiday gift ideas like home decor, jewelry and bath goods,” Hettrick said. “Things are going great. We’re so excited to start Yoga at the Gallery.”

Maynard-Gilbert is gearing up for a busy holiday season, and her store’s hours have expanded to accommodate the hustle and bustle. Ava Grace is open from 11am-6pm during the week (closed Tuesdays), 11am-8pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 11am-5pm on Sundays. She is excited to offer several great gift options for under $25 including wall art plaques, mugs and wine glasses with fun sayings, and the ever-popular blanket scarves. Of course, Ava Grace Fashions is always open online at avagracefashions. com, where customers can shop 24/7. Follow Ava Grace Fashions on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for news and new arrivals. “I learned really early on that you can take a situation where maybe someone isn’t too into beauty or fashion and show them one or two things that they can do, and all of a sudden, this glow comes about them and that confidence and beauty shine through,” Maynard-Gilbert reflected. “I mean, it’s really very selfishly fun for me to do that for and with women. It’s a good thing. It’s a lot of fun!”

The girls will start with one class a week (most likely on weekend mornings). The beauty of yoga is that everyone can participate, and Tobias is encouraging both new and seasoned to come check it out. “There are modifications to every pose which I will assist you with,” Tobias said. “All you need is a mat and some water. I came to Ellicottville over the summer to teach bachelorette parties yoga, so I would love to continue to teach down here.” Yoga at the Gallery will begin over the Christmas/New Year’s break at Ellicottville’s Gallery 14731, located at 14 Washington, downtown Ellicottville. Check out their Open House on Friday, December 28th from 6-8pm starting with an introduction, followed by light refreshments and a shopping hour. You can find more information including hours, pricing and more on Facebook (Yoga at the Gallery), Instagram (@yogaatthegallery) or by emailing instructor Sarah Tobias directly at sartobias24@gmail.com.

“LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN” BRET MICHALES: ICONIC LEAD SINGER OF POISON COMING TO SENECA ALLEGANY RESORT AND CASINO

A Conversation with Bret Michaels HULICK: You are a singer/songwriter, actor, director, producer, writer of screenplays. Do you prefer one over the other? MICHAELS: To me it’s all under one big umbrella of being creative. Especially these days, we are not just singers, or TV stars, or even athletes… it is all part of being an entertainer. And to take that to another level, it’s part of making people happy and making their days better, I love doing it all. HULICK: You’ve not only had major success with the band Poison, you have a solo career with as much success. What are you most proud of with each? MICHAELS: Well obviously I’m proud of Poison because we were four broke kids from the street living in a warehouse and managed to beat the odds, and here we still are today playing arenas and amphitheaters. We managed to touch an entire generation of music fans in a way that seems to have lasted several decades. As a solo artist I’m proud that I’m able to bridge the gap. Sometimes it’s hard for someone to maintain both a band and solo career. I get to go out as a solo artist and become more of an intimate storyteller and connect with the crowd on a much more personal level… and I’ve gotten to do some amazing things like VH1’s #1 show Rock of Love, and winning the highest rated season of Celebrity Apprentice. It’s been an amazing ride so far.

...................... SATURDAY | JANUARY 19 @ 7pm By Melanie Hulick Singer/songwriter Bret Michaels, lead singer of the band Poison, is coming to warm up a cold WNY night when he brings his solo tour to Seneca Allegany Casino’s Event Center on Saturday, January 19, 2019 for one show only. Michaels is one of the most renowned rockers around the world, selling out venues with the band Poison as well as on his solo tours. Starting with their debut album, “Look What The Cat Dragged In”, Poison has released 19 albums through the years that garnered singles like “Talk Dirty To Me”, Nothin’ But A Good Time”, “Something To Believe In”, along with one of the best power ballads in music history, “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn”. Michaels has also made a huge name for himself as a solo artist releasing his debut album, “A Letter From Death Row”, in the summer of 1998 and went on to release another 8 albums that produced hit songs like “Girls On Bars”, “I’d Die For You”, “Nothing To Lose” (a duet with Miley Cyrus) and “A Letter From Death Row” which sealed his mark in the industry as significant. Showing his love for his two daughters he penned a song for each, “Raine” and “Jorja Bleu”, which gives a different insight of the famous rocker. Writing music and singing is not the only talents Michaels has … he is a screenplay writer, an actor, director and producer, which he proved by writing the screenplay for the movie he would also star in with the title of his debut album, “A Letter From Death Row”. SNOWED-IN caught up with the multi-talented artist recently and we talked about how his health has led him to be a vital part of raising money and attention for multiple causes including diabetes, his success as the lead vocalist of Poison and his success as a solo artist, which he describes as allowing him to be a more intimate storyteller to the audience. The singer has not been without many health scares throughout his life starting at the age of 6 when he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, which he publicly admitted he suffered from after he went into insulin shock and collapsed on stage during a Madison Square Garden concert with his band Poison, when he had not eaten after taking his insulin due to nerves about performing at such an iconic venue. Today Michaels splits his time on tour between his band and his solo career. Don’t look for this rock icon to slow down any time soon. “I am always working on something,” said the singer. His latest venture includes a new single he wrote with someone very special to him ... read about it in the following conversation ...

......................

Tickets to Bret Michaels’ January 19th performance can be purchased through wwww.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany) or directly through Ticketmaster.com. For more information on the artist, visit www.bretmichaels.com.

HULICK: After being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 6 your whole world changed. Now you are a voice and face of the disease, helping so many people to accept the diagnosis and showing that they shouldn’t worry about the stigma commonly associated with the disease. There are a lot of people, adults and children, who look at you as a hero. What does that mean to you? MICHAELS: It’s an incredible honor to be recognized as you described. It gives me chills just hearing it like that. I’m so grateful that I have been able to become a voice of inspiration to diabetics both kids and adults. If there was one thing that I could be remembered for it would certainly be to inspire people to beat the odds and never let adversity stand in the way of their hopes and dreams. Obviously, I fight for diabetes, but I think that the message is so universal, no matter what you think is standing in your way. Stay positive and don’t let the world get you down. HULICK: Your charity work is extensive and important. You need to be commended for that. Where can people go to join in your efforts? MICHAELS: Thank you so much. I’m very proud of what the LIFE ROCKS foundation has done. People can help directly at our shows. You can purchase the items we auction off every night, sometimes it’s my hat that I wore that night, or one of my guitars, or a bandana, and that money goes right into the foundation and right back out to help people. It’s a Dollar in Dollar out situation, there are no expenses, no payroll, no employees, so every dollar is for the cause. You can also go to www.bretmichaels.com and make donations. HULICK: Who do you listen to today? MICHAELS: I listen to everything. I love Modern Pop and Country as well as Rock. And I’m such a beat and groove guy … that’s why I love hip hop and R&B … they really push the limits with grooves and are always the first to try new things with drum beats. I have always loved country and the modern stuff is amazing. The stories in the songs are so relatable and are really the last art form left that is telling the tale of America and painting the picture of the country we live in. And a good pop song is just that - a good Pop song. Right now I love Sean Mendez. His stuff is catchy and big with a real emotional vocal. I really just like good songs. HULICK: Are you working on any projects now? MICHAELS: I am always working on something. I have a mobile recording studio and video production rig with me all the time. So even if I’m in the air I can demo or create new ideas. I have some great stuff both musically and with TV coming in the next year. One is my new song, “Unbroken”, that I have written with my daughter Jorja. I cannot wait for everyone to hear it. I truly believe it’s a message that everyone in the world can relate to these days. HULICK: If you had to summarize your career with one of your song titles ... MICHAELS: Without a doubt “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn”… and that’s not to say that I don’t think my whole life has not been amazing. What I mean, for example, is I am at the peak of Rock of Love when my appendix bursts moments before I take the stage to a sold out venue in Texas. Or, I win Celebrity Apprentice and then have my brain hemorrhage. God has an amazing way of leveling me out. HULICK: Do you have a message to your fans that are coming to your Seneca Allegany Casino show on Saturday, January 19th? MICHAELS: Yes I do! Get ready; I’m coming to throw you a party you will never forget! I can’t wait! I’ll see you all there!

TRAIL CENTRAL

THE MAGIC & MUSIC OF THE MARILYN HORNE MUSEUM

Nestled at the edge of the Allegheny National Forest in the City of Bradford, is a fascinating museum honoring Marilyn Horne, a small-town girl who became an internationally acclaimed opera star. Born to Bentz Horne and Berniece Hokanson Horne, both natives of Bradford, this legendary star once performed in concerts staged in Bradford’s town square. From this humble beginning, she became a main stay of the Metropolitan Opera and appeared in virtually every major opera company in the world. The Marilyn Horne Museum and Exhibit Center, a 3,400 square foot Art Deco exhibition space, is located directly alongside Bradford’s town square where she once performed as a child. It is the only museum in the world of this size and quality, dedicated to a single opera star. Displays include audio guides, film, and 19 interactive exhibits, plus opera costumes and recital gowns. Marilyn Horne has been called “probably the greatest singer in the world.” - Opera News, 1981. She specialized in roles requiring beauty of tone and the ability to execute difficult coloratura passages. A mainstay of the Metropolitan Opera, Marilyn made her debut on stage at the Metropolitan Opera on March 3, 1970. At the age of 20, she appeared in the role of Hata in Smetana’s The Bartered Bride for the Los Angeles Guild Opera. In 1954, she sang the voice of Carmen Jones in Oscar Hammerstein’s re-creation of Georges Bizet’s Carmen. She sang professionally in the world’s great opera houses for over 40 years. Horne is one of the greatest mezzo-sopranos in opera history and is considered the best Rossini interpreter ever. Horne also sang contemporary music and traditional popular songs, appearing on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and singing Sing After Me and C is for Cookie on Sesame Street. Marilyn was a recipient of the National Medal of Arts in 1992 and Kennedy Center Honors in 1995. During her career she won four Grammy Awards. Horne’s contributions to the opera world are many, including The Marilyn Horne Foundation created in support of young singers. The Marilyn Horne Museum is someplace special. When you walk into the museum, there will be music playing and a student ambassador will greet you and welcome you to the museum. The museum is an immersive musical and educational experience for all ages; it is not a stuffy, do-not-touch museum. It is a sensory experience, visually striking with exhibits which encourage touching and listening. The floors are black and white marble, the entrance to the museum is a striking theater marque. Exhibitions of replica costumes from a few of Marilyn Horne’s signature performances are displayed along the hallway to the theater. Each of the intricate costumes has a rich history. The baroque style theater is a replica of one of her favorite opera houses. Once seated, visitors are treated to a film in which Marilyn Horne herself narrates the story of her rise to international acclaim. Leaving the theater, wander at your own pace exploring, listening, and interacting with the many displays. Speaking with Matthew Hileman, Director/Curator of the museum, you catch his excitement and enthusiasm for the museum’s mission. “I’m fortunate to have worked for international entertainment companies, including most recently the Walt Disney Company. It’s my goal to bring a little world-class hospitality magic to our region.” Magic will be happening this Christmas season at the Christmas Marketplace, the Candlelight Concert Series, and within the museum’s gift shop. The Christmas Marketplace, with a Dickens theme, will take place Dec. 8th from 11am-4pm at the Museum. The American Caroling Company will be performing, holiday vendors will be on-hand, and gingerbread cookies and cider will be served. The vendors who are participating from throughout Pennsylvania and New York will be offering fine art, hand-crafted or creative items. Vendor items include pen & ink sketches, hand-dyed yarns, and a line of men’s gift items. Artisans on-hand will be spinning wool and practicing the ancient art of Pysanka - the Ukrainian art of egg decoration. Along with the vendors, music, and customary Dickens characters, it is rumored Ebenezer Scrooge will be strolling the Marketplace. Much attention has been lavished on the items offered for purchase at the Marilyn Horne Museum Gift. The shop is brimming with unique holiday gift items and collectibles including French toys, quilled cards, crib mobiles, a variety of educational toys and an exquisite set of jeweled ornaments. A gift of colorfully decorated toy shields and swords will fire many a child’s imagination. The Candlelight Concert Series on Dec. 15th will feature Hanna H. Finson, a concert harpist performing traditional carols and more. The music will be performed by candlelight in a chapel fashioned of wood and glass. The doors open at 7pm with the performance beginning at 7:30pm. Reservations are not required, and all performances are free. The Harriet Wick Chapel, which seats 150, is located at 300 Campus Drive, Bradford, Pennsylvania. Future performances will include the Ginastera String Quartet on Feb. 16th and a performance of the Great American Songbook on March 9th. To keep current on this series and other upcoming magical events, sign up for the museum’s newsletter at www.marilynhorne.org/concertseries. To create your own memorable experience, a High Tea may be booked at Marilyn Horne Hall. For special occasions such as an engagement, anniversary or other signature event, an intimate fine dining experience can be held within the Baroque style theater at the Marilyn Horne Museum. To schedule a high tea or a catered candlelight dinner in the Baroque Theater, phone 814-362-7990 Open daily, the Marilyn Horne Museum is located at 2 Marilyn Horne Way, Bradford, PA. Admission is free. Museum hours are Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm, and Sunday 11am-4pm. Café hours are Monday-Saturday 7:30am-5pm, Sunday 11am-4pm. Seasonal and holiday hours may vary. For information e-mail info@marilynhorne.org.
