By Spencer Timkey A staggering number of families in Cattaraugus County - 1 in 5 - are starving. The Ellicottville Food Pantry, under the leadership of Shelly Kibby, makes the difference every day. How many days a week do you go hungry? None? Me neither. I’ve been fortunate enough to never experience not having dinner at the table. But in Cattaraugus County - one of the poorest in the state - families going hungry is a legitimate problem. While there isn’t one quick fix to this particular problem, a contingent of like-minded people lead an every day crusade to help those in need. Enter the Ellicottville Food Pantry. Located at 53 Elizabeth Street (connected to the United Church of Ellicottville), the Food Pantry services Ellicottville and the 8-10 mile radius around it. Feeding families, providing toiletries, delivering food and offering other assistance, volunteers continue to be the driving force in this feel good success story. There are 70+ families they currently provide for, and most recently, they are in the process of putting together over 60 Thanksgiving dinners. While no volunteer or donator can be overlooked, a major component of the Food Pantry’s recent growth is because of Shelly Kibby. An Olean native that spent the past 30 years in Virginia, Kibby moved back to the area and started helping around the Pantry.

“I was living with my sister when I first moved back, and saw a big food truck where someone asked if I could help,” she said. “After 5-6 months of helping, I fell in love with the place. Going to church, volunteering … after a few months, I started doing the reports. Then all of a sudden I was running it. There was no one else to take over, and I’ve put my heart and soul into it.” With Kibby at the helm, the Pantry has grown significantly. An added stockroom to store more supplies, four new commercial refrigerators and freezers, and reaching out to new families has made the Ellicottville Food Pantry a hub of activity for the local area.

Howard Hanna Real Estate Services (formerly Realty USA)

“I’m so proud of where we started to where we are now,” she said. “Before, we had this tiny fridge that could barely hold any food. Now look where we’re at - providing 60 families with turkey Thanksgiving dinners.”

Kibby recently was diagnosed - and subsequently conquered - cancer. When the doctors said her kidneys were failing, she almost threw in the towel. But she then remembered all of the good she’s done, the tears of the grateful people, the progress they’ve made at the Pantry.

34 Washington St., Ellicottville, NY 14731 OFFICE: 716-699-4695

“Sometimes it’s so easy to take life for granted,” she said. “But I made it. A higher power decided I wasn’t done yet, and I’ve applied that attitude. I want to make sure people can eat, get to their doctor’s appointments or be able to have heat in their home. It’s self rewarding.” Along with keeping people fed, the Pantry also assists with other things, like HEAP - the state-run Home Energy Application Program. HEAP assists families in need with keeping their homes heated throughout the bitter western New York winters. Kibby also walks senior citizens through Medicare savings programs. Anything she can do to help, she and her volunteers will. While they’re set on the number of volunteers they have, you can help the Pantry in a number of other ways. It’s always in need of paper products. Food drives and fundraisers help restock shelves and put money in the account for them to go purchase the other food they need to keep families fed. Most pantries only allow families to come once a month - to provide 9 healthy meals a month - but Ellicottville allows for twice a month, or 18 meals. That’s a significant amount of volume, and they could use your help. “I have the best volunteers and support system,” Kibby said, quick to point all of them out: Glen Bush, Nancy Rogan, Pat Kerl, OJ Agramonte and Vail Germain. “It’s so rewarding when you’re helping someone. It’s a warm and loving atmosphere. We’re here to help people.” For more information on the Ellicottville Food Pantry, stop by or call Shelly: 804-387-4807.

BOB McCARTHY’S IRISH CHRISTMAS | Friday, Dec. 1 @ 6pm | Ellicottville Brewing Co. Hard to believe it was over a year ago that Ellicottville lost Bob McCarthy aka “The Voice of Ellicottville. Bob was instrumental in helping many youth programs in Ellicottville with his favorite being “Santa’s Workshop.” To support this endeavor, Bob created the event, Irish Christmas. Since his passing, many people have stepped forward to make sure that the event - now renamed “Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas” - continues. With the help of many members of the community, The Rotary Club of Ellicottville made last year’s event a great memorial to Bob. It was the most successful yet as the community stepped up to honor an amazing individual. It was McCarthy who said, “I love doing Irish Christmas … it is a night of Irish magic. I don’t know how the magic gets there, but it just does. That’s the beauty of it.” So on Friday, December 1st at 6:00pm the magic will continue. Ellicottville Brewing Company again has been kind enough to host the event. This will be the 12th anniversary of Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas fundraiser. It has become an event to remember, and one that locals and weekenders alike don’t miss. On Dec. 1, 2017, McCarthy’s wagon will be parked outside of EBC starting around 7:00am, where the public can leave new toys and unwrapped gifts for Santa’s Workshop and the Sheriff’s Santa Program. These programs collect gifts to help make Christmas a little special for less fortunate families. Monetary donations are also welcomed and can be sent to Rotary at PO Box 101, Ellicottville, NY 14731. All donations are tax deductible; include your return address so a receipt can be sent. Again this year, a number of restaurants will serve a special Irish-inspired dish at a reasonable price, or you can order from the great EBC menu. You can bet the event will continue the way Bob intended (including the fabulous pie auction), and we’re certain that some of Bob’s creations will be the highlight of the evening’s auction. Local craftsman Ed Frederickson will once again create unique pie boxes, a chest - and rumor has it - great birdhouses in the McCarthy tradition for the auction. The spirit of the season is unmatched in Ellicottville, and Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas is a perfect opportunity to share it with friends. Remember to mark your calendar for Friday, Dec. 1st at 6:00pm at EBC to share the spirit with friends and to help give back to families in the community. For more information call 716-474-7832. If you cannot attend this special event but would still like to contribute, monetary donations may be sent to: Family Support for Ellicottville, PO Box 101, Ellicottville, NY 14731.

DEMO DAY | Saturday, Dec. 16 • 9am-3pm | Holiday Valley Resort Buying something new can be a tricky endeavor for even the most experienced consumer. Advertisements will tell you all the things you want to hear - and none of the things you don’t. Reviews can be skewed, biased or just flat-out wrong. The notion of ‘try before you buy’ has become a common phrase in our society, mainly because people want the peace of mind knowing the money they’re about to spend is on something they know they’ll enjoy. Ski and snowboard equipment, an investment unto itself, can be some of the trickiest products to buy. You’ve got Internet banner ads showing ridiculous deals, but if you don’t know what you’re buying, you’ll dig yourself deeper into the dreaded money pit. The importance of supporting your local shop is paramount - and Holiday Valley’s Demo Day is the perfect complement to that. Holiday Valley and the major ski and snowboard companies are here to help you with your purchasing decisions. On Saturday, Dec. 16, visitors are welcomed to test new product. Reps from major manufacturers, plus Ellicottville’s local shops, will set up a demo village at the base of the Main Lodge. Brands like Burton, Salomon, Mervin Manufacturing (Lib Tech, GNU, Roxy, Bent Metal Binding Works), Atomic, Armada, Head, K2, Line, Elan, Liberty, Volkl, Apex Ski Boots, Rossignol, Dynastar, Nordica, Head, Fischer and Blizzard will set up shop to put product out on the hill. Telemark ski demos will also be available from The City Garage (bring your own tele-boots.) PLUS ... Southern Tier Brewing will host a Beer Tasting from 1:30-4:30pm. Sweet! One of the best parts about this event is that all demos are FREE to try. So long as you show up with a valid ID and a credit card (to make sure you don’t run off with that Burton Custom Flying V you just fell in love with), you can product test all day long on as many different set-ups as your little heart desires. Of course it goes without saying that you will need a lift ticket to enjoy the slopes. For more information on this year’s Demo Day visit www.holidayvalley.com or call 716-699-2345.

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF PROGRES S I O N . H OLIDAY VALLE Y’S TRANSFORMATION - TH E N A N D N O W. By Spencer Timkey Through good winters, bad winters, one (really) bad winter and countless inches of the white stuff, one business has stood the test of time. We’ve come a long way since one lodge, a T-Bar and no manmade snow. This season, Holiday Valley celebrates 60 years of skiing, snowboarding, reinvestment, innovation and smiling faces.

1976 TRAIL MAP

Its success stems from a combination of visionary leadership, a sense of community amongst employees and the geographical proximity to multiple massive population centers. Regardless of the revenue, the Valley - as it is affectionately known as - constantly reinvests into itself, whether that be snowmaking systems, mountain operations, summertime activities or new lodges. While it doesn’t have the elevation of other prominent eastern resorts, it compensates by offering a high-end visitor experience. Founded in 1958 by Doc Northrup, John Fischer and Dick Congdon, the first day in business Holiday Valley had four trails and one T-bar. Drawing from an already strong contingent of skiers from Ellicottville, Buffalo and Cleveland, word soon got out about this little ski town tucked away in the foothills of western New York. The next season, two tows and the Tannenbaum T-bar were installed, along with the construction of the Ellicottville Ski Club. By this time, the Valley had started to draw more people. The Village of Ellicottville, sans bars, shops and restaurants, slowly began its transformation into how we know it today. Throughout the 1960s, the Valley saw significant growth. Installation of the Mardi Gras double chair and School Haus T-bar, along with the first test of snowmaking, made for more of a vacation destination rather than a place for a small group of people to come and ski. The five original astronauts also made an appearance! The 1970s saw even more growth. The Chute chair came onto the scene in 1970, and Yodeler saw its first season of night skiing. The Middle (Yodeler) Chalet and Warming Hut were expanded, and Valley Village lodging began construction. And in 1977, Skip Yahn became the Resort’s president.

1978 CINDY’S

Throughout his tenure, Skip helped the Valley become a household name in ski circles. Ask anyone who worked with him, and they’ll tell you he always had a smile and a handshake. He was the type of boss you wanted to work for - the one who brought cold liftees coffee and the one who seemed to always remember your name. The Valley recently celebrated Skip’s contributions to the Resort with a party and a video celebrating his time spent as the boss (you can find that on HV’s Facebook and YouTube pages). If the 1960s and ‘70s was the Valley’s growing period, the 1980s would be the decade it started to form as the powerhouse we know it as. The installation of five chairlifts - the Yodeler, Mardi Gras and Eagle quads, the Tannenbaum and Morning Star triples and the Snowpine double - increased uphill capacity exponentially. Lodging also saw a boost, as the Snowpine Village condos were built and the resort purchased the motel from Bud & Mary Timkey - transforming it into the Holiday Valley Inn.

1980 YODELER QUAD 1984 SNOWPINE GROUNDBREAKING

Current president and general manager Dennis Eshbaugh took the reins in the early 90s, and as a disciple of Skip, the Valley continued its upward trend. Construction of the iconic clocktower provided a photogenic landmark, while Tannenbaum Lodge gave visitors another place to warm up and eat. Installation of the Sunrise Quad - coupled with Phases I & II of The Inn - gave daily visitors the chance to ski-in, ski-out.

G

A major aspect of the resort’s success has been its snowmaking systems. We are not in an area where snow is always guaranteed - those lake effect bands are notoriously fickle. The reinvestment in snowmaking has totaled over $13 million in the last 45 years, providing a safety net for the resort if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Half of the HKD Snowmaker system is automated, meaning snowmakers can turn the guns on and off with the flip of a switch. This increases effectiveness (both in productivity and energy), safety for the snowmakers and the amount of resort that can be opened.

1984 SNOWPINE VILLAGE

The transformation over the last 60 years is nothing short of incredible. Three lodges (built and rebuilt), 13 lifts (three high-speed), 60 trails (38 open for night), 700+ snowmaking guns, lodging all over the place and hundreds of thousands of people on the slopes. The Valley has continued its success because it has stayed true to that mom-andpop mentality - it’s not owned by a corporate conglomerate. It’s the people who make it so special, whether it’s the ones working or visiting. When speaking to Edna Northrup for the 4-part 60th anniversary videos (to be released the tail end of December into January), she was asked this question: Did you ever think it would get to this point? Her answer: “No. I never could have realized what this would become.”

DISCOVER FUN AT HOLIMONT

It’s hard to describe how HoliMont is not just your average day on the slopes. The club atmosphere makes you feel at home. Family and friends have been growing lifelong relationships at HoliMont since 1962. This season, you have one more chance to try a membership at HoliMont for a fraction of the cost. When you sign up for the Discover HoliMont program, you and your family have 30 days of skiing to decide if you want to join. If you decide that HoliMont is not the right fit for you, enjoy your trial membership till the end of the season. If you do decide to join North America’s largest private ski club, you’ll do it at a significant savings on the initiation fees.

Call 716-699-2320 or go online at www.discoverholimont.com to get more information.

GLAD YOU MADE IT!

The Area Control crew at HoliMont has been busy during the off-season. One project they complete every year is to clear out the glade areas and make them safe for skiing. It takes days to chip up all of the fallen branches and mow, but the end product is some of the best glade terrain around.

Take some time this winter to ski off the trail at the ‘Mont.

BEFORE

AFTER

DOES THIS GO TO THE TOP?

Next time you’re getting on the lift, ask the attendant “Does this thing go to the top?” Watch their face. All joking aside, chairlifts are serious business and HoliMont has an impeccable reputation for lift safety and maintenance.

The Sunset Chairlift got some love this off-season. All of the chairs were removed, sandblasted and galvanize dipped for corrosion resistance.

Hopefully these shiny, almost new chairs, will be loading skiers sooner than later this season.

8 LIFTS. OVER 50 SLOPES AND TRAILS. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC MONDAY-FRIDAY.

SNOWED-IN ~ DECEMBER 2017 ... Page 11

THE KEY TO SUCCESS

There is no question that you have to have a quality product even if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. HoliMont has been making tons of quality snow for years. In fact, some of the crew at HoliMont were responsible for the initial design of the Pole Cat snow gun that you see widely used in many ski areas. Over the years HoliMont has invested in snowmaking. They can make snow on 100% of their slopes and have the ability to pile it on during short windows of optimal temps and conditions. All this means that while it may be green in your backyard, ours is blanketed in snow. HoliMont does not offer night time skiing which allows the groomers to create the best surface possible, day after day. Come spend a day on the slopes of HoliMont and ski the difference.

POWDER DAYS HAPPEN MONDAY - FRIDAY

The best deal on weekday skiing is at HoliMont! Get 10 weekday tickets for only $260. Nothing beats a weekday of skiing or riding at HoliMont. The lift lines are short, the snow is sweet and the grooming is impeccable. Call the office or go online to buy your Weekday Experience Pass today.

INSIDE THE STUDIO

By Caitlin Croft

PAINTINGS INSPIRED BY COMIC BOOKS AND SUPERHEROES / PRESERVING CHERISHED MEMORIES THE STUDIO OF JUSTICE

LEGACY PORTRAITS

SHAD ART IN THE COMICON WORLD

KP McCLARD PHOTOGRAPHY

Nestled away in the Enchanted Mountains of Ellicottville, NY, the famed ‘Studio of Justice’ has been found. Inside, unbeknownst to many, Shad Nowicki has been making a splash in the ComiCon World for quite some time now. His eclectic takes on the Comic Book/TV world with his paintings are what have people talking, recently completing portraits for celebrities such as Steve Guttenberg, Chris McDonald, Erin Gray and Lou Ferrigno. One of his paintings of Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy was gifted to the actor that plays him - Michael Rooker. Recently I had the opportunity to catch up with my good friend Nowicki and get an update on his latest happenings. Entering the Studio of Justice - as I do on occasion - there was something different that struck me. A small water tank off to the right. “Miss Croft, meet my new roommate, Jaws.” Navin “Jaws” Johnson is a Western Paint Turtle that had arrived earlier that day. While checking out the little guy acclimate to his new environment, Nowicki tells me, “I took the month off from painting after a busy Con Season that has had me booked solid with commissions. It has been great! This month has been nice to relax and reorganize the Studio though.” Nowicki walks over to a display cabinet (he has some seriously cool collector pieces) and hands me a Frankenstein Head. “I had been looking for a Gabriel Monster Machine for years and I finally found one!” To this I looked at him with a blank stare. He laughed, then continued: “It is a roto-caster from the 1970’s that let’s you make different molds out of plaster; I have even sold a few after painting them.” Nowicki used the roto-caster to also make refrigerator magnets in the form of Hans Solo stuck in Carbonite. He painted them in glow-in-the-dark and neon paints. “You can find me handing these out all holiday season,” he said. (I was lucky enough to get one wrapped up for me at the end of the interview.) But back to painting … Nowicki has done something truly incredible for this Holiday Season. He. Did. A. Print. Now to many this may seem like a no brainer for an artist in the ComiCon World, but not for Nowicki. Knowing him from personal experience (I am fortunate enough to be a part of the A-Team as Madam Secretary and have helped Shad at numerous conventions to date), I understand his extreme dislike for prints. “You have to work harder, smarter and more frequently doing original work only.” Nowicki’s work is usually acrylic on canvas with vintage comics and news cut-outs in the background that pertain to either that period or theme of the piece. Nowicki was quick to tell me not to get used to the whole “print” idea, but he was certainly excited to express that for the Holiday Season his fans could get their hands on his work at a more affordable price. (Let’s hope he makes this a tradition every year.) “I love to interact with people on social media; it is how I decided which painting to turn into a print … I chose four paintings and the one with the most comments won.” The winner was The Keeper’s of Endor. “My entire home is a tribute to the 80’s genre. Everyone seems to like what I am doing, and I love it. To work for someone you were a fan of growing up is something else. For the 2018 Con Season I will be focusing more on Entertainment than Comic but I hope to have over 100 pieces for the shows.” Intrigued? You can connect with Shad Nowicki on Facebook (Shad Nowicki or Shad Nowicki Artist), on Instagram (@shadpaints) and on Twitter (@shadart). His website is www.shadart.biz or you can email him anytime shadpaints@gmail.com. And as Nowicki always says: “Stay Tuned” for what is coming next!

Since the evolution of cameras on smart phones, you can easily be desensitized to what you are doing with a photo - freezing time. That is what Kathleen Prosperi-McClard is looking to remind us of. Specializing in generational portraits, Kathleen is looking to expand her reach as a photographer. “It is very unique my process; I want my clients’ vision for their session to be realized.” Aiming to reach new clients who are visiting our great area for a family reunion or vacation, she wants them to be able to have a piece of art; not just a photo Uncle Joe set the timer on then ran to the group and said, “Say Cheese!” Speaking with Kathleen, you get the sense that a session with her is more of an experience than anything. “I want my clients to enjoy the process from the initial conversation to the session to the big reveal.” I asked Kathleen what “the big reveal” was. Immediately after or up to a few days after the session (depending on the length of your stay), she looks to meet again with the client to show them all the portraits she took. Not only can she show you varying sizes, but she can show you what it would look like on your wall. “If you were to send me a picture of the wall you wanted to decorate with your family portraits, I can take the photos from the shoot and arrange them to best accent the wall.” This is a talent Kathleen brings to the table that few others do … her eye for design. She is a full-service photographer and will “hold your hand” through the process. “My work is an investment. I want it to be something you pass down for generations.” She can even create painted wall paintings and special tabletop art.” I asked Kathleen where she found her love of photography. Her response: “My father. He discovered a love for manual photography later in life and I am grateful to carry on his passion as my career.” This must be where her love of generation portraits comes into play. “It is amazing to be able to freeze time for a session where there are three to five generations in it. Knowing this is something they will cherish forever.” Of course, Kathleen also shoots portraits, events, and weddings as she is multifaceted in her skills. Although based out of Kane, Pennsylvania, Kathleen is happy to travel far and wide for her clients. “Because I am from a small town, I do need to travel and work harder than, say, a photographer in a large city, but that is what makes it even more enjoyable making high quality portraits accessible to so many more people.” Kathleen has travelled all over our great world - from Dubai to Italy to India bringing a new perspective home to her work every time. Kathleen is looking forward to expanding her network of clients due to the draw of the Ellicottville area and its many vacationers. You can check out more of her work at www.kpmcclardphotography.com or give her a call at 814-558-5792 to schedule your one-of-a-kind session.

AROUND TOWN: BREAKFAST, LUNCH ... DESSERT! By Mary Heyl

ASHFORD JUNCTION DINER New Owners Celebrating ONE Year in Business

CUPCAKED: SEND YOUR SWEET TOOTH TO PARADISE Over 30 Different Flavors + Perfect Holiday Platters

The Ashford Junction Diner, located at 5364 Route 242 just a few miles east of the village of Ellicottville (past the Tubing Park), is proudly celebrating its first year in business this December! Ellicottville’s only diner-style restaurant, the Ashford Junction Diner is attached to Ellicottville Country Store & Antiques, which has been in operation since the late 19th century. Diner owners Jay and Peggy LaCroix have paid homage to the diner’s roots in naming it after the bustling junction that once drew visitors from afar …

Owners Anne and Scott Coe welcome you to their beautiful bakery, where they serve a wide variety of delicious treats and offer a full range of event planning services. This holiday season is the perfect time to try a new treat, order your desserts or get started planning a spring wedding, and the Coes can make it all happen!

An old railroad switching tower is almost all that remains of Ashford Junction, once one of the busiest railroad towns in Cattaraugus County. The tower, built in 1914, still overlooks the intersecting railroad tracks of the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad (now just the Buffalo Pittsburgh Railroad), and was key to making sure trains could smoothly make the transition east to Rochester, north to Buffalo, or south to Pittsburgh. Just like cities with major airports, railroad junctions were busy towns that usually had several hotels, restaurants, and stores to accommodate travelers. What could passengers expect upon arriving at Ashford Station in the early 1900s? Just like today, weary travelers would be relieved to stay in a comfortable room in the three-story hotel - the Western House - which sat across the street from the depot and next door to what is now Ellicottville Country Store and Antiques. The building that now houses the diner was actually added on to the store under the ownership of Harold Clark, who purchased the store around the turn of the 20th century. Clark owned the store for many years, eventually adding a gas pump and a Harley Davidson shop on to the existing store. For many years, this was one of the oldest Harley shops in the country that some of today’s visitors still remember. When the Dayton family purchased the store, they turned the Harley Davidson shop into a diner, and the rest is history! The LaCroix family actually has a strong connection to Ashford Junction. Jay and Peggy discovered through family documents that their grandfathers and great grandfathers worked together in Ashford Junction on the railroad and at the switching tower, thus inspiring the name of their diner. The LaCroixs, who live locally, pride themselves on serving delicious homemade food, continuing the tradition of offering travelers a great place to relax and fill their stomachs. The diner is open five days/week (Wednesday through Sunday) from 7am-2pm, serving breakfast and lunch during those hours. You can count on them to be open most holidays too, including Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day, with the exception of Christmas. (In the middle of a busy holiday season, it’s great to know that you can enjoy a delicious meal that you didn’t have to cook yourself!) Stop in and check out the diner’s large chalkboard menus that are continually updated to include new offerings. Their regular menu boasts a full breakfast spread including omelettes, plus tasty lunch options such as burgers, hot dogs, soups, sandwiches and so much more! Diners can enjoy classics like grilled cheese and BLTs. And the LaCroixs regularly feature weekly specials (the LaCroixSSant of the Week) such as grill-pressed mac-n-cheese served with tomato basil soup, or their reuben omelette. The Ashford Junction Diner has been a huge hit among community members and travelers alike. John and Sally Zerfas of West Valley are big fans of the diner’s fare and make it a regular stop. Some of their favorite items: the Buffalo chicken wrap and French onion soup. “We go there all the time,” said Sally. “The food is absolutely delicious - everything we order is always fantastic!” Keep tabs on new specials (such as fish fry during Lent), special hours and more, by following the Ashford Junction Diner on Facebook, or call the Diner at 716-699-6100.

Cupcaked celebrated its Grand Opening this past fall, but Anne’s passion for baking actually started much earlier than that. As a young girl, Anne spent lots of time baking with her grandmother, Sue Magara, who was an avid baker, herself. Anne continued cultivating her passion for baking over the years and pursued a career in the food industry, working as a banquet captain and restaurant manager after obtaining a degree in Event Planning from Lock Haven University. Anne soon recognized a need for quality locally made desserts, and her co-workers, who enjoyed Anne’s signature cupcakes, encouraged her to pursue her passion for baking. Beginning in April, Anne focused on promoting her baked goods on social media and in the area by setting up at local farmer’s markets and festivals, donating her baked goods to local charities and participating in food competitions. On September 28, Anne and her husband opened Cupcaked at 22 Monroe Street in Ellicottville - the icing on the cake! Cupcaked is known for their incredible variety of delicious cupcakes; there are more than 30 different flavor combinations! Anne has taken cupcake baking far beyond simply chocolate or vanilla, as Irish Car Bomb, Maple Bacon, Mint Chip and White Russian are just a few of the unique flavors that she bakes. Customer favorites include Chocolate Peanut Butter as well as Raspberry Delight - vanilla cupcake with raspberry injection, vanilla buttercream frosting and raspberry drizzle. Of course, gourmet cupcakes are not the only treat available at the Ellicottville bakery. Cupcaked also serves cookies, brownies, scones, cakes and many other mouth-watering baked goods. Anne is pleased to introduce some new goodies this holiday season: “We are offering pies, both regular and mini size, for the Thanksgiving season and holiday season. We also will be offering a cookie decorating kit for families to do over the holiday season, which includes cookies, buttercream and sprinkles. Also, we will be offering seasonal cutouts, holiday flavored and decorated cupcakes, as well as assorted dessert platters.” Short on time this holiday season? Let Cupcaked provide all the tasty treats for your holiday gatherings, whether it’s a family dinner or a work event. Anne is taking orders now for Christmas goodies (the last day to order is December 23 with pick-up on the 24th). If wedding bells are in your future, give Cupcaked a call to kick off your plans! Cupcakes and traditional wedding cakes are available to order, and Anne is pleased to offer a full range of event planning services through her business. Several packages are available including Day-of-Event Coordinating, Month of Coordinations, Full Wedding Planning and even hourly planning. The most popular service Anne offers is Day-of-Event coordinating, where she works hard to organize the ceremony, set up the reception hall, arrange the buffet and desserts, decorate, light candles and any other “day of” details that need to be taken care of. Anne is pleased to welcome visitors to her bakery and has thoroughly enjoyed the warm welcome she has received from the community. “Even though we have only been open since September 28, the response from the village has been unbelievably supportive,” she said. “My favorite part of this first year has been how much the community has embraced us.” To learn more about Cupcaked’s event planning services and menu, visit cupcakedonline.com and check out Cupcaked on Facebook. Don’t forget to stop by Cupcaked while you’re doing your holiday shopping - gift certificates are available!

Nature’s Remedy

natural foods market & holistic wellness center Infection Prevention Strategies for the 2017-18 Ski Season By Kristina Barlow, N.D., C.S.T. Most common colds and flu infections are VIRAL. Colds can be caused by over 100 different virus types, but only influenza viruses A, B and C (and their subtypes) can cause the flu. This is why the seasonal flu vaccine is aggressively promoted for all ages 6 months to 100 years old. The flu shot consists of: dead influenza viruses (this season it covers 4 viruses: an A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus; an A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2)-like virus; a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like (B/Victoria lineage) virus and a B/Phuket/3073/2013like (B/Yamagata lineage) virus), egg protein (how the viruses are grown), Thimerosal (Mercury-flu vaccines also available as mercuryfree), stabilizers (sucrose, sorbitol and MSG), Polysorbate 80, and Formaldehyde. The FluMist (nasal spray vaccine) consists of weakened influenza viruses and the above ingredients. Concomitant infections, secondary to the primary viral infections, are usually bacterial and only amplify the current illness. Antibiotics are heavily prescribed even though most initial infections are viral. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that half of antibiotic prescriptions are inappropriately prescribed. A simple and cost effective blood test is in development with Stanford University School of Medicine and could accurately identify when an antibiotic is needed or not. The overuse of antibiotics threatens to create a global scourge of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens. Actively engage in Infection Prevention this ski season - November though April! DON’T wait until you actually get sick to seek medical and/or naturopathic care. Each person must decide if vaccines and antibiotics are right for them, but in the meantime, put the following strategies to the test and see the results for yourself. Not only will your immune system be strong and resilient, your mood will be stabilized through the end of this cold and dark six months.

DAILY RECOMMENDATIONS TO MAINTAIN GOOD HEALTH Silver Shield, a Natural “Antibiotic” … Nano-particle Silver works in three ways: it ruptures the membrane of a bacterium leading to cellular death, it ruptures a virus’s DNA rendering the virus unable to replicate, and finally, it resonates at a frequency that directly kills bacteria, viruses and fungi. Ingest one teaspoon of Silver Shield before bed for overall health and prevention. More can be safely consumed for initial and progressed infections. Silver Shield also comes in gel form for topical use and as an alternative hand sanitizer. Silver Shield kills pathogenic microorganisms without killing the good bacteria. Immune System Elixir … This recipe was created by me and is one of many recipes in a book I am currently writing. I love how I feel when I drink this first thing in the morning! It is excellent for energy, cleansing, metabolism and the immune system. In a blender, mix: 16 ounces of cold water, one whole lemon (peeled), 2 tablespoons Local Maple Syrup, 2 capsules of Capsicum (opened), 2 capsules of Ginger (opened) and 1 scoop of Ultimate GreenZone. Chlorophyll, A Gentle Detoxifier … Chlorophyll is the lifeblood of green plants and is excellent for cleansing, alkalizing and strengthening the gastrointestinal and immune systems. Liquid Chlorophyll ES is made from Mulberry Leaves and is flavored with pure Spearmint oil. Add one ounce of Liquid Chlorophyll ES to about 16 ounces of water every day. Sip in its concentrated form for mouth issues, sore throats and esophageal irritation. Probiotic Eleven, Microbiome Replenisher … Probiotics are vastly researched and proven to help the body’s immune system, heal gastrointestinal disorders and support

the production of various neurotransmitters. Take 2 capsules of Probiotic 11 with water in the morning and before bed, on an empty stomach. Brain Maker by David Perlmutter, M.D., is an excellent book that explains the power of a healthy gut microbiome. Immune Stimulator, Medicinal Mushrooms … Immune Stimulator combines Beta Glucans (from Saccharomyces cerevisiae) - immunomodulators and macrophage/lymphocyte stimulators; Arabinogalactan (from Larix spp) – a powerful cytokine and natural killer cells stimulator; Colostrum (from milk), Cordyceps, Reishi and Maitake mushrooms – all immune system strengtheners. Take two capsules of Immune Stimulator two times per day on an empty stomach for infection prevention. More capsules can be taken during times of illness. Elderberry D3Fense, An Herbal Combination … Many customers from our store, especially local teachers, notice a great difference when they take this product daily. Elderberry D3fense is a combination of 2000 IUs of Vitamin D3, Elderberry Fruit Extract, Echinacea Aerial Parts, Willow Bark Extract and Olive Leaf Extract. Take two capsules with a meal two times per day. Vitamin D3, A Fat Soluble Vitamin … Nature’s Plus has an excellent liquid Vitamin D3 source that is in an oil emulsion. One drop is 2500 IUs. During the fall, winter and early spring seasons the recommended dose is 5000-10,000 IUs twice per day. This has been shown to prevent infections, heal skin issues, stabilize moods and aid in healthy bones. Vitamin C, a Water Soluble Vitamin … Everyone knows and has experienced the

preventive and healing effects of Vitamin C. It is sold in tablet, capsule, powder and chewable forms. Everyone’s Vitamin C needs are different. How do you know what dosage is good for you? Many people take 1000 mg of Vitamin C twice per day for three days. Then they increase that to 2000 mg for three day then 3000 mg, etc … UNTIL they reach bowel tolerance. This means that the bowels will become loose. At this point, back down the Vitamin C by 1000 mg. This is your current need.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY Elimination of Chemicals … Toxic products in the home, car and office will wear out the immune system, liver, kidneys, skin and lungs. For one month remove toxic laundry detergents (Tide), bleach, dryer sheets, household cleaners, perfumes/colognes, lotions, air fresheners and candles. The collective force of all these chemicals added together may be the cause of a depressed immune system, headaches, mood swings, eczema/psoriasis, asthma, allergies, weight loss resistance and much more! You are in control of your indoor air quality! Humidity … Dry air in your home or workspace will dry out your mucus membranes, increasing your risk for respiratory infections and dry, itchy skin. Purchase a humidifier and a humidifier monitor. You will be surprised at how dry your living spaces can get. Higher room temperatures will add to this low humidity. Add Essential Oils (like Tei fu oil) to your humidifier. Sleep Health … Come visit me at Nature’s Remedy, downtown Ellicottville, for a Free Sleep Health consultation and a mini biofeedback scan.

GIT-R-DONE

LARRY THE CABLE GUY RETURNS TO SENECA ALLEGANY RESORT AND CASINO THIS WINTER FOR TWO SHOWS

A Conversation with Larry MELANIE: We are so excited that you will be doing two shows at the Seneca Allegany Casino Event Center. LARRY: I’ll tell you what … it’s gonna be fun! I always look forward to it every time I get out on a stage. And I’m not just blowing smoke. Stand-up’s my favorite thing over everything else I do. It explains why comedians like Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno continue to tour year after year. There’s nothing like stand-up. MELANIE: How many shows do you typically do in a year? LARRY: 433,000. I do four shows a night … no, typically I do 140 to 160. MELANIE: Let’s talk about your catch phrase, “Git-R-Done”. LARRY: Git-R-Done!

...................... SATURDAY | JANUARY 20 @ 7PM / 10PM By Melanie Hulick I had the chance to talk with the hilarious Larry the Cable Guy, who will be performing two shows on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino. To say it was the funniest conversation I’ve ever had is an understatement. Larry has been in the business now for over 25 years and shows no signs of slowing down. With all that is going on around the world, this year, more than ever, would be the time to make plans to catch one of this funny man’s shows. “You have to have laughter in your life … you need that break,” the comedian said. Trust me … you will laugh out loud … I’ve seen his show a couple of times through the years and have always come out feeling like I was just at a “laugh fest” - sore stomach and all. Family is very important to him and he speaks of his family with tremendous love; yet he still injected that “Larry” humor when he spoke of his daughter Reagan (named after his favorite President by the way), saying she was nine years old … “Wait,” said the comedian - “Let me check her Facebook.” Asking him his thoughts on his amazing career, he reflected, “It’s been awesome! I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve gone and done things I didn’t even think I would ever do. I’m thankful for it, and believe me I don’t take any of it for granted. If it all ended tomorrow I’d be completely happy.” He added, “People ask me if there is anything else I want to do and I got to be honest … no there isn’t. I just want to be a good dad and raise my kids.”

......................

Tickets to Larry the Cable Guy’s performance at Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino in Salamanca start at $35 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Allegany). For more information on the comedian, visit www.larrythecableguy.com.

MELANIE: Was that something you came up with or something you always said and incorporated into your act? LARRY: It’s something I’ve been saying since I was a kid. How it came about as part of my act though was when I was doing a radio station show in Tampa once a week and I had to sign off and so I just popped out Git-R-Done. The next thing you know people started saying it. The show then went to two days a week, then three days a week and it was getting pretty popular. The radio station was in Tampa but it was syndicated in Orlando. I knew I was onto something when I went to Orlando to a comedy club or something and I went into this record store, back when they had record stores, and some guy was walking out of the store and I heard him yell to the clerk “Git-R-Done” and the clerk yelled back “Git-R-Done”. So I said to the guy, “Hey, that Git-R-Done you just said, where did you hear that?” And he goes, “Oh, man … this guy on a radio station says ‘Git-R-Done’ every time he signs off from doing social commentary. His name is Larry the Cable Guy.” So I say, “Dude, that’s me … I’m Larry the Cable Guy!” He says, “No you’re not … shut up!” So I say, “Yeah I am … listen.” So I do my best “Git-R-Done” and he says, “That’s not even close!” (laughs) MELANIE: (laughs) Oh no! LARRY: So that’s when I got it copyrighted and made T-shirts, because when people are in record stores yelling it, you know that’s your next step. MELANIE: You’ve been in the business for over twenty five years now. LARRY: Yeah, I went to do professional stand-up in May of 1988. I officially still haven’t quit my job as a Bellman at the Hyatt Regency. I just took a leave of absence and never went back. MELANIE: (laughs) Who cracks you up? LARRY: My wife is hilarious … but as far as growing up I would say I was a big fan of vaudeville and old time comedy; that was my influence. I loved Charlie Callas, Henny Youngman, Phyllis Diller, Milton Berle, and Bob Hope. I’m a fan of quick, short jokes, the rim shots, the stupid stuff. I love Steve Martin and Howie Mandel. My three favorite sitcoms growing up were the original “Bob Newhart Show”, “Mary Tyler Moore” and “All in the Family”. But I would say my all time favorite at this point would be “Seinfeld”. Now as far as stand-up comedy goes it is Jeff Foxworthy. I think he is the king. His first two albums are the funniest albums of all time. I love Nick DiPaolo - I think he is hilarious and a guy named Dom Irrera and Colin Quinn. MELANIE: Do you write your stand-up routines or is it more of an off-the-cuff type of thing when you are on stage? LARRY: A lot of it I write, but I’ll say about a third of it is off-the-cuff. When you’re on stage and you’re doing jokes and you’re on a roll it’s almost like you’re just hanging out with a group of 10 people at a bar and you get on a roll just talking to someone. When you’re on stage you think of tags - another one liner played off of another. There’s no better example of that than the Viagra joke I wrote about my wife’s grandpa overdosing on Viagra and his coffin had a sun roof. Then boom … right after that I thought of … “I guess they had to bury him eight feet under!” (laughs) MELANIE: What’s the funniest one-liner you’ve heard someone else say? LARRY: Oh, my gosh. Well let me give you one you can print and I’ll tell you one you can’t print off the record. It was a Nick DiPaolo line. When the Pope, John Paul II, passed away he said, “Yeah you never saw that coming … the guy had the posture of a jumbo shrimp for the past twenty years!” (laughs) MELANIE: (laughs) Larry, this has been some of the most fun I’ve ever had doing an interview. Before you go, do you want to say something to our readers? LARRY: Tell them they are awesome fans and I can’t wait to perform for them! Git-R-Done!

JOHN WILLIAMS EUROPEAN PASTRY SHOP Joe Frombach has been operating the pastry shop in Bradford since 1989. His father and seven uncles were all bakers in Philadelphia. Joe started in the family bakery as a child, working before and after school, and on weekends washing pans. From this humble start, he progressed in skill as a baker, learning to create luscious European pastries, a variety of breads, pies, and how to decorate cakes for all occasions. At his pastry shop and restaurant in Bradford, you may purchase a variety of breads - salt rising, cinnamon streusel, cobblestone, two-rye, white, raisin, wheat, and six-grain. His butter bite rolls are melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The bakery cases are always brimming with seasonal items including a variety of decorated cookies, multiple pies, and raspberry swirls, to name just a few. The restaurant is open daily, and breakfast is served all day. From the griddle, order a Belgian waffle with fresh strawberry topping and whipped cream, or glazed cinnamon streusel French Toast. For those seeking something hardy, order the Lumberjack Breakfast of three eggs, three pancakes, a side of hash brown potatoes, breakfast meat and toast, all for the price of $8.93. The Quiche Du Jour is served with a side order of toast for breakfast; for lunch a side salad accompanies your order. Lunch choices include croissants filled with tuna or chicken salad, along with a variety of sandwiches, melts, wraps and paninis. Appropriate for this time of year, the Smokey Bird Panini features turkey, bacon, tomato, provolone and cheddar cheese with BBQ & mayo. The Soup & Salad Combo includes the Soup Du Jour with a tossed salad, and a fresh hard roll for $6.83. Gluten free options are available.

Your baking class can include making Alligator Bread, a traditional holiday white bread, apple strudel, coffee cakes, and a couple of dozen different cookies. A minimum of eight participants are needed, with a maximum group of 15. Your luncheon is a croissant sandwich, a side salad and a beverage. A Holiday Cookie Party is another option. In this baking party, your group will create a variety of holiday cookies. Cookie choices may include cut-outs, peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate, and decorated sugar cookies, up to five different types of cookies. Participants will have five dozen assorted cookies to take home. Either class is $29.99 per person. Classes must be pre-scheduled. Christmas Stroll 30TH ANNIVERSARY Saturday, Dec. 2 • All Day Downtown Ellicottville

Slow down the pace during the holiday rush and take some time to come to Ellicottville for the annual Christmas Stroll. “Ellicottville is a great place to come out and experience a relaxed pace and to take the time to enjoy a nice representation of the reason we celebrate during this holiday season,” said Gwen Bush, organizer of the event. “Come out and remind yourself of what Christmas is all about.” Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic Church on Martha Street will showcase their display of Nativity and Angels all day for all to see. From 4:00-5:30pm, Santa will arrive at Villaggio to greet all the good girls and boys, while Mrs. Claus will be in her kitchen at Katy’s Café for cookies. All through the day, elves will be circulating through the village with candy to share, and a live camel will even be sauntering around! Bring your furry friends dressed in their season’s best for the annual ReinDog Parade down Washington Street at 4:30pm. The evening comes to a conclusion with a living Nativity featuring the local children of Ellicottville, who will make their way through the Village to the Gazebo at 6pm, where the pageant will take place telling the story of that first Christmas, the journey and the birth of Jesus. Enjoy performances prior to the procession, by the Ellicottville High School Band and Choir, at the Gazebo at 5:45pm. For more info: 1-800-349-9099 www.ellicottvilleny.com
