Hopefully by the time this edition of SNOWED-IN goes to press, we won’t be saying #winteriscoming - we’ll be saying winter is HERE, which means now it’s more important than ever to drop in on some new gear to make sure your winter season in Ellicottville not only looks good, but performs even better. Lucky for you, there are a slew of specialty shops in the village, among them Dekdebruns Snow Sports, located at 18 Washington Street. Since 1961, the Dekdebruns clan has remained committed to their loyal customer base, offering some of the This map wa most cutting edge winter sports gear on the market, with an unrivaled focus on giving these customers the best Prepar R Real service. LL SNOWED-IN caught up with shop manager Josh Mowrey to see what Dekdebruns has in store for HI Y for the upcoming season. H Li YOU T

If you’ve ever visited Dekdebruns, you have seen first-hand what a dynamic offering they have. Everything from high performance ski race gear, on-hill and apres ski fashion, to must-have accessories, snowboard gear Daniel T. Marto Christopher and rentals. With three floors to browse through, our first stop was upstairs, where you’ll find Dekdebruns’ expansive snowboard selection. Mowrey and his team pride themselves in finding brands that one can’t find just anywhere, ensuring that their customers are exposed to the big picture. This year, they have two unique offerings we’re pretty sure you’ll be stoked about. 1 inch = 0.2 miles

Up first, the Katana binding by Rome Snowboards. Rome has been a long time front runner in the snowboard industry, making them a no brainer to deck the walls at Dekdebruns this season. The Katana is a binding that has come after years of development through their team riders and engineers. In normal speak - this binding offers flexibility that will suit any board or style, yet still offers incredibly responsive power without adding a ton of weight to your set-up. Of course, no binding is complete without an amazing deck to mount it to, which is why Dekdebruns is also proud to carry a complete line of Capita snowboards to feast your eyes on. One of the exciting collaborations they have in store for this year’s line, is with none other than Volcom, a staple fashion brand within the action sports industry. Capita took their Outsiders series to the next level, adding some modifications to their core (the wooden inside of the snowboard), as well as a proprietary camber and sidecut story (the ‘bend’ of the board if you will). The end result: a highly maneuverable true twin park board, with amazing Volcom artwork adorning its top-sheet! Quantities are limited of this collaboration, so make sure you stop in to Dekdebruns ASAP to get your hands on one of these! The proper hard good set-up needs to be properly complimented by a great looking outerwear kit. Dekdebruns carries a wide selection of layering and performance gear, from brands like 686, O’Neil, Mamutt, Canada Goose, Bogs Footwear and more. One of their favorites however, is a fairly new company called Picture. Founded in 2008 by three French brothers, Picture was founded on the principle of being as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible. Many companies dart in and out of this category, as costs associated with the production of fibers and fabrics that are truly sustainable are high, but Picture has found a way to keep their prices in check, while maintaining their environmentally conscious business model. All of their garments are made from GOTS (global organic textile standard) cotton, at least 50% recycled polyester, as well as certified OEKO TEX 100. What does this all mean for you, the consumer? A less impactful, socially and environmental conscious product line that is actually sticking to their mission. Dekdebruns is proud to offer a well rounded range of products from Picture that will appeal to men, women, skiers, snowboarders, or simply people who want well styled, developed and manufactured outerwear. With appealing details, fabric textures and color blocking, you’re sure to find a piece that’s right for you during your next visit. While these are just a few of their many products spotlighted, Dekdebruns Snow Sports has much, much more to offer. Not only are they a full service ski and snowboard shop, they also dish out some of the best boot fitting, stance alignment, and back shop work around. Need a tune up on your gear? Whether you’re looking for a basic sharpen and wax, or a high-end race hand tune, their expert staff will take care of your needs. While you wait, you can browse their expansive selection of goggles and accessories from brands like Smith, Giro, Smith Optics, Hudson Gloves, Pret Helmets, the ever popular ION pov cameras, and more! To make an appointment for any of their great services, give Dekdebruns Snow Sports a shout at 716-6992754 or stop on in to their location at 18 Washington Street. More information is also available on their website at dekdebruns.com and on Facebook and Instagram.

Anew Beginning Massage and Spa RENEW YOUR MIND • BODY • SOUL MASSAGE • REFLEXOLOGY • FACIALS ACTIVE ISOLATED STRETCHING • AND MORE VIEW ALL OF OUR SERVICES ON OUR WEBSITE By Mary Heyl Holiday shoppers in Ellicottville will encounter a new business this year. Its can’t-miss location is signaled by two flags, the American and the Canadian, which fly proudly over the red front door. Enter Ameri-Can, located at 11 Washington Street, where an eye-catching and intriguing selection of American and Canadian art, antiques, and apparel awaits you. Proprietor Liz Boberg invites shoppers to explore “the uniqueness of our local artisans mixed with surprises of yester-year” as they look for that one-of-a-kind treasure to give or keep!

9 MONROE STREET • DOWNTOWN EVL, NY

www.AnewBeginningNY.com

716-699-2508

If the front door of Ameri-Can looks familiar to you, it should. Most recently, 11 Washington Street was the home of the Red Door Ski Shop, where Boberg worked as manager for several years. Throughout her years at the Red Door, Boberg had the privilege of getting to know many families in the village, including seasonal visitors and Canadian friends. During this time, Boberg noticed a common thread in their conversations over the years. According to Boberg, “The idea [for Ameri-Can] came from many customers often asking, ‘Is there anything here made in the USA or Canada?’” Ameri-Can, which opened on September 1, answers this timely question and so much more. The store features all American and Canadian goods, as well as items made by local artists whose work reflects the uniqueness of the area. The front of the store features beautiful American and Canadian made clothing; whether shoppers are looking for a striking holiday outfit or a comfy EVL fleece jacket, they can find it at Ameri-Can. However, Boberg’s selection of ready-made apparel is not to be overshadowed by the handcrafted accessories created by local artisans. Hand-knitted and crocheted headbands, hats, baby sweaters, and quilted totes are just some of the one-of-a-kind accessories available. Boberg emphasizes her store’s purpose as a local gallery for artisans and crafters. She features the work of well-known seamstress Anna Linderman, whose forte is repurposed fur and leather items. A stunning display of leather mittens, bags, drink cozies, fur pillows, throws, and wallhangings are a testament to the fine craftsmanship of Linderman. Customers also enjoy the work of area artist, John B. Mets, whose well-known photo paintings and Giclee prints capture the essence of the village during the height of ski season. Other fine locally-made items include Hog-Shed Studio Pottery and Molly Rue Natural Soy Candles, which make delightful gifts. As visitors explore the shop further, they will encounter the Man Cave, Boberg’s homage to all things rugged, rustic, and well, manly! This cozy room features leather bomber-style jackets, authentic cowboy hats, and other men’s apparel. Shoppers can find unique fixtures that would add the perfect touch to any “man cave,” like locally-crafted lamps made from antique typewriters and film projectors. The Man Cave displays the work of award-winning local artist Todd Plough, whose “high-quality oil paintings demonstrate his ability to capture light in nature,” according to Boberg. She points out that many of the breathtaking scenes in Plough’s work are actual portrayals of the area, as Plough is influenced by his time spent in Allegany State Park and the Adirondack region. “Ameri-Can is quite a change from what was here before, but the response has been wonderful,” said Boberg, who encourages visitors to check out the new website, www.AmeriCanEllicottville. com or call 716-699-6690. Ameri-Can is open seven days a week from 10am-6pm Monday through Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday.
