ROCK CITY PARK

FALL ADVENTURES

Kick off a late fall adventure at Pumpkinville. Open through Oct. 31, families make their way to Great Valley for the hayrides, a corn cannon shoot, Storyland, cow train, goat mountain and 6-acre corn field maze. Purchase a variety of fresh picked apples or visit the Pick-Your-Own-Pumpkin Patch. Watch them press fresh apple cider and then enjoy as you walk over to Pumpkinville’s on-site bakery, Di’s Pies and Bake Shoppe. Watch as pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin muffins and pumpkin and apple pies come right out of the oven. The kids will love keeping warm while jumping on the Pumpkin Jumpin’ Pillows and racing on the Farm Featured Pedal Karts. Or try any of the fall foliage destinations in the Enchanted Mountains. It just makes sense that an area surrounded by hills and valleys of trees, that also embraces the outdoors, would have some of the best places to go in the fall time, be it anytime throughout the autumn season. Rock City Park and Griffis Sculpture Park also remain open until the end of October. Have a fall ball walking through the leaves while you gaze up at gigantic rocks or steel sculptures. Allegany State Park will have you seeing double vision as you view the trees and then their reflections off of Quaker Lake, Red House Lake, and Science Lake. This park is open year ‘round and has plenty of activities for visitors to try!

HIS TO RY, C U LT U RE AND GREAT FUN!

By Mary Heyl Known as the “Gateway to Allegany State Park,” the city of Salamanca, New York is located on the reservation of the Seneca Nation of Indians, the largest tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy of Nations. Salamanca is the only city in the United States to lie almost entirely on a Native American Reservation; however, Salamanca’s rich history encompasses so much more than this geographic distinction. This winter, visitors are encouraged to take a cultural journey through Salamanca, where the history of the Seneca Nation, the legacy of Salamanca’s railroad system, and the city’s celebration of one of the most iconic songwriters of the 20th century can be explored and enjoyed by every member of the family.

SENECA-IROQUOIS NATIONAL MUSEUM Steeped in the tradition of the Seneca Nation, Salamanca celebrates its heritage through the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum, where visitors can learn about the “Keepers of the Western Door.” The museum, which is located just off I-86 at 814 Broad Street, has a variety of permanent and temporary exhibits open to the public. Visitors can begin their visit in the Longhouse Room, a permanent exhibit that shows visitors a partially reconstructed longhouse much like the ones that the Seneca people would have lived in during the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum then guides visitors to the Log Cabin Room, another permanent exhibit that shares the Senecas’ transition from the longhouse to log cabins like the ones occupied by colonial settlers and British soldiers. One of the most moving exhibits in the museum, “This is Where We Walked,” shares the United States’ infamous intrusion and destruction of Seneca communities with the construction of the Kinzua Dam in the 1960s. Visitors should be sure to explore the newest exhibit, which will be on display through December, the “We Play Lacrosse” exhibit located in the East Gallery. Did you know that lacrosse originated from a tribal game played by Native Americans throughout the northeast and Canada? Lacrosse is still a very popular sport in the city of Salamanca, as the Salamanca Warriors have enjoyed top rankings in regional playoffs for many years. Explore the history of this unique sport and its legacy in Salamanca through this interesting exhibit, which also features inductees into the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame. The Seneca-Iroquois National Museum’s fall/winter hours are 9am-5pm Tuesday through Saturday; the museum is closed Sunday and Monday. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 7 and up, and $3 for seniors and college students. Children ages 6 and under are admitted free. Entrance to the museum’s gift shop is always free - be sure to check out their beautiful array of gifts including genuine turquoise jewelry, hand-cut wooden ornaments, beaded purses and more. For more information on the museum, call 716-945-1760, visit www. SenecaMuseum.org, or find the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum on Facebook.

A TRAIN LOVER’S DREAM COME TRUE Salamanca’s location near the Allegheny National Forest has made it one of the biggest sources of hardwood in Western New York, especially throughout the 20th century. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a large system of railroads was constructed in order to transport these large quantities of lumber nationwide; at one point, Salamanca was known as a “railroad city.” Traces of this industrial past still remain in Salamanca, especially at the Salamanca Rail Museum, located at 170 North Main Street. The museum, which is run entirely by local volunteers, is free to the public and stands as a beautiful reminder of a bygone era. The museum itself is a fully restored depot constructed in 1912 by the Buffalo, Rochester, and Pittsburgh Railway. According to volunteer Stan Carlson, the museum is a train-lover’s dream come true, as it contains three model train layouts, which train enthusiasts work on year ‘round. Carlson encourages visitors to explore the many artifacts and photographs from Salamanca’s railways and those throughout Western New York. In addition to the exhibits inside, the museum has outdoor exhibits with actual cabooses and boxcars for visitors to explore. The Salamanca Rail Museum is open seasonally from April 1 through Dec. 31, and is closed from January through March. The museum’s hours are Friday and Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday from noon-5pm. Carlson encourages visitors to visit the museum’s gift shop, which includes reprinted postcards of the depot from the early 1900s, as well as a variety of train gifts and memorabilia. For more information, contact the museum at 716-945-3133 or visit Salamanca Rail Museum on Facebook.

SILVER BELLS IN THE CITY

In addition to Salamanca’s great museums, the city hosts special events year ‘round that celebrate Salamanca’s culture and heritage. The Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce, led by director John Sheehan, works to build tourism and support economic revitalization by focusing on what makes Salamanca unique. One of the chamber’s biggest annual events is Silver Bells in the City, which is held each year in honor of Ray Evans, the award-winning lyricist of the iconic Christmas song, “Silver Bells.” Evans was born in Salamanca in 1915, and went on to pursue a successful song-writing career with composer and songwriter Jay Livingston. The duo was known for writing television themes, like the theme for Mr. Ed, as well as songs for movies in the 1940s and 1950s. Evans and Livingston won three Academy Awards for their movie tunes, most notably “Que Sera Sera,” sung by Doris Day, for the Alfred Hitchcock movie, The Man Who Knew Too Much. Evans’ “Silver Bells,” originally written for a 1951 Bob Hope film, is most remembered in Salamanca and is the theme of the city’s Christmas festivities in December. On Saturdays during the month, visitors can look forward to free Christmas-themed movies screened at the Ray Evans Seneca Theater located at 10 Main Street. The Ray Evans Seneca Theater, which was built during World War II and originally called “The Seneca,” is dedicated to promoting the arts in Salamanca, and stands as a tribute to the legacy of Evans. Visitors can still enjoy its sparkling marquee, which lends an air of authenticity and nostalgia to the movie-going experience. At the beginning of December, the season kicks off with Salamanca’s Annual Light Up the Night event at Jefferson Park. There, the Christmas tree is lit for the season and carolers fill the night with music. Little ones can meet Santa at the park and catch up with him later in the month on Saturday, Dec. 12 at Meyers Steakhouse & Inn. Throughout the month, Christmas Craft Shows will take place at the Allegany Community Center; this is a great time to shop for unique gifts! For more information about the Silver Bells Festival, visit www.SalamancaChamber.org and find Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce on Facebook.

GORDON LIGHTFOOT

With a career spanning 50 years, Canada’s greatest singer/songwriter is making his way to Seneca Niagara Casino

A Conversation with Gordon HULICK: You’ve had another long running tour this year. You must really enjoy touring and performing live and getting feedback from the audience. LIGHTFOOT: Yes I do. I love to feel the outflow too. It feels good to sing and have that communication with the audience. HULICK: Do you change your set at all based on how the audience responds that night? LIGHTFOOT: Well, we’ve got two shows we use. They hear the standards and we do a rotation of about eight or nine songs between the two shows. So some songs we do one night and the next night we don’t. We keep rotating it so it doesn’t get tired. Also, the whole order of it changes at the same time. HULICK: You have had many of the biggest names in music record your songs. How does that make you feel when you hear their renditions? Do you have an opinion in one way or another? LIGHTFOOT: Let me put it this way Melanie … I never heard a cover recording that I didn’t like. I am simply honored that they would do so. Their treatment is always interesting and fine all around. HULICK: If you were going to attend a concert, who would you go see? LIGHTFOOT: Well if it were here in Canada and it was a rock show … well I went to see Ozzy Osbourne. They’re pretty good. I’ve seen Blue Rodeo and Neil Young. A few years ago I mostly took my daughter. We went to see Rush. I go basically because I’m asked, “Can you get us some tickets?” HULICK: (laughs) LIGHTFOOT: (laughs) I guess the reason being that I have a few connections around town here. And if my daughter wanted to go to something she really meant it. (laughs)

............................... SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2015 | 8:00 P.M. By Melanie Hulick Iconic singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot will take the stage for one show on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Seneca Niagara Casino. This is one of those shows that should be tagged “a must see” for anyone who loves music … just good music with thought provoking lyrics and soothing melodies to go along with them. I had the pleasure of talking with Lightfoot from his home in Toronto and found him very easy to talk to and told him so, to which he laughed and replied, “Well, it gives me a chance to get things off my chest.” Lightfoot’s love of music started early on; his first performance came at age thirteen at the famed Massey Hall in Toronto, winning a singing competition for boys. His career started moving forward in the early 1960’s and produced some of the best songs ever written - and incidentally the most recorded by other artists. Songs like “Sundown”, “Carefree Highway”, “If You Could Read My Mind” and “Early Morning Rain”. The singer/songwriter’s career and life were severely interrupted in 2002 when he collapsed backstage at a show with a near fatal aneurysm in his abdomen. He was airlifted to the hospital where he underwent three major surgeries and spent six weeks in a coma. His love of music gave him the strength he needed for the next two and a half years to basically “re-learn” his craft and get him back out on the road performing for his fans. We talked about that and the many awards that have been deservedly bestowed on him through the years; I even got a very interesting history lesson on the subject of one of his most famous songs, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. Lightfoot put it all in perspective when we talked about his family of six children and four grandchildren. “My life is like two worlds I have to combine,” he said. “I have to stay sharp with the music and I have to stay sharp with the family.”

...............................

Tickets to Gordon Lightfoot’s performance at Seneca Niagara Casino start at $30 and can be purchased through www.senecacasinos.com (click on Seneca Niagara).

HULICK: You are one of the best, if not the best, storytelling songwriters. Where do you get your inspiration from? LIGHTFOOT: Topical songs were something a lot of us wrote coming out of the folk revival. I guess for me many story type songs lead me right up to the “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. By that time I got to the point that I thought I knew what I was talking about, only I didn’t. So I got all the back copies of the newspapers and I read all the articles to get it in the proper chronological order. You’ll find this interesting - there was some controversy about whether it was the hatch cover that gave way. It was proven by some scientists that the ship broke in half. That was on National Geographic. They asked me if they could use some of the music from the song for the trailer and I said sure. They showed me the film and I was quite convinced about what they found. It was done by a group called Dive Detectives. They did an experiment in St. Johns, Newfoundland where they have a tank and they introduced this rogue wave idea and showed really what happened - it broke in half. HULICK: Did your music change in any way after your illness and recovery? LIGHTFOOT: Well, on the onset I wasn’t sure I’d be doing it at all the first six months. The whole thing lasted for about two and a half years. During the time I was recovering, I spent a lot of time practicing and concentrating. Of course, we always kept up our rehearsals too. Not the whole band, but two or three of us would get together once a week. It was great - it would keep us sharp and my playing improved a lot for one thing. HULICK: What an amazing story of how you came back after being in a coma for six weeks and how long you worked to get yourself back to your music your true love. LIGHTFOOT: When I woke up from that, I could hardly move! They could hardly get me out of bed. When I look back on it now, I don’t have a bad feeling about it at all because I actually don’t remember encountering any pain. That was the amazing part about it, because with all of the operations you are of course anesthetized and a couple times they had to do an epidural and then I had the morphine button. There was never any more than about a two or three on the pain threshold. So I figured I was lucky that way. HULICK: You’ve been honored so many times throughout your career with Grammy nominations, 17 Juno Awards, and you were presented the Governor General’s Award in Canada. And that is just naming a few. Is there one award in particular that means the most to you or one that maybe surprised you? LIGHTFOOT: I got the Order of Canada in 1978. That’s really the significant one you could say. And I got surprised when I became the “companion” of the Order (highest level) after the illness while I was working my way back to the stage. I don’t talk about awards much. I take them seriously to a certain point, but I’m more interested in just doing a real good job more than anything else.

From summer to winter ...

ALLEGANY STATE PARK

photo/Adele Wellman

photo/Paul Crawford

By Mark Flanagan As Western New Yorkers, we’re no strangers to winter. Everyone who has lived here for more than a year knows you’re at least locked in for 5 months of snow and cold, maybe up to 7 on an El Nino year. It is an immutable fact. However, what defines our region is the way we’ve adapted to it. Normal people see winter as an excuse to stay indoors, a sort of carte blanche to fully embrace the lazier half of their nature. To be fair, there’s nothing wrong with sweatpants, hot cocoa, electric blankets and Netflix. I’d be a terrible hypocrite if I didn’t admit that I love all those things. Yet, it strikes me as an awful waste to spend the entire season as some kind of sedentary hermit. I know this rings true with many of you: winter is our season. That’s why every year you can feel that electric tension run through town when Holiday Valley fires up the snow guns. You can see it in the red-cheeked smiles of the locals. And, as always, you can experience it to the fullest at Allegany State Park. Most folks generally think of the state park as a summer destination; a place to hike around for a few hours or maybe a good place to haul the kayaks up to. What they fail to realize is that the park offers a ton of great activities all year round. Perhaps the greatest of these opportunities comes in the form of the Art Roscoe cross-country skiing trails. These trails offer 35 miles of well-groomed track for all experience levels. Despite its generally monochromatic tone, some of the winter views from these trails are absolutely breathtaking. You can even allow yourself to feel good while you do it, as Nordic skiing burns off an incredible amount of calories. You’re earning that hot cocoa. And, if the trail really winds you, there are a multitude of lean-tos and cabins (complete with wood stoves) where you can catch your breath and pump life back into your extremities. The Summit Warming Hut even offers a snack bar on the weekends to refuel. If you want to go skiing but find yourself tragically under-equipped, the same warming hut also offers rentals at a reasonable price. Best part is, the skiing you’ll do here is free, minus the negligible cost of park entry. Do you prefer snowshoeing? No problem. These trails work just as well for snowshoers as they do for skiers. To recap: it’s cheap, well-maintained, comfortable, and great exercise. There is no reason for you not to do this. Snowmobiling here is used as a legitimate mode of transportation just as often as it is used as a form of recreation. Of course, Allegany State Park recognizes its importance and offers a wide range of snowmobile trails. The trails that serve as horseback riding paths in the summer double as phenomenal snowmobiling trails once the snow flies. Like the cross-country skiing, equipment can be rented from the Summit Warming Hut if need be. To ride your sled in the park, you need a valid New York State registration as well as a park permit, so try not to do this one spur of the moment. The classic winter activity (in my mind at least) is sledding. The state park offers a ton of prime hills to break the sled out for. As a bonus, it’ll leaves your kids absolutely exhausted. Speaking of which, if your children are the adventurous type, you can even camp in the aforementioned cabins. The wood stoves in every cabin negate the worst part of winter camping, while still allowing you to feel outdoorsy and rustic. It’s worth mentioning that both of these are still fun without kids as well - the fact that Holiday Valley Tubing does well is proof that adults like sledding too, and the cabins at Allegany State Park offer simplicity and comfort for people of all ages. It’s the best of both worlds. Some of the more unique activities the park boasts are ice fishing and dog sled races. Ice fishing is probably the greatest excuse known to man to down (more than) a few beers on a frozen lake. Seriously, ice fishing is fun even if you catch nothing, as long you bring a friend, some food, and some drinks. Both Red House Lake and Quaker Lake will be open for fishing once the park deems them frozen enough to be safe. If you don’t have the patience for fishing, then check out the dog sled races. Every year, the park hosts the Canadian American Trappers Special Races at Camp Turner in the Quaker Area. Racers from all over the country attend these races and, while it’s no Iditarod, the races are still very impressive. Seeing some of these gorgeous dogs do what they were born to do will make you rethink your next pet for sure. For information on the dates and times for these races, please visit either the state park website, or canadian-americansledders.com. Allegany State Park has embraced the winter months. It embodies our own love for what is often the most widely-reviled season. By capitalizing on these opportunities to get outdoors, you can help to undo the perception that winter is good for nothing but long naps. Come to the park and join in on winter’s biggest and longest celebration.

By Mary Heyl Unique shops, delicious restaurants, and a full schedule of winter events will not only fill your weekend calendar, but will leave you wanting to come back for more! Visitors can start their day at one of several restaurants downtown, such as BB’s Family Restaurant at 143 Main Street, which now serves breakfast daily and features a delicious fish fry on Saturday nights. Looking for a quick bite? Pete’s Place on Main Street has the best burgers in town (and is a favorite spot of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly!) A popular spot for snowmobilers is Randolph’s newest restaurant, MJ’s Tavern, located just a couple miles from downtown at 10933 Mace Road. Whether you’re stepping inside to warm up or to take in a football game on the big screen, MJ’s Tavern is the perfect place to enjoy a good meal with friends. The wearied traveler should book a massage at Senn-Sations Salon and Day Spa in one of Randolph’s most beautiful Greek Revival historic buildings. This full-service salon, located at 150 Main Street, features monthly massage, manicure, and pedicure specials. Visit the salon in October to get your pink hair streak for breast cancer awareness, and don’t forget the salon’s gift packages and certificates, which make great Christmas gifts! Discover different shopping opportunities on Main Street. Randolph Retail Company is home to unique gifts, home décor, and beautiful ladies clothing. There, you will find a variety of seasonal gifts and holiday décor, as well as American-made clothing to wear at your holiday events! Venture next door to Yarn for Ewe, located at 129 Main Street. Knitters and crocheters will be delighted to find all types and colors of yarns - from wool to cotton to acrylic, sock yarn, lace yarn, crochet thread, and much more! Get cozy inside this winter at one of Yarn for Ewe’s knitting classes; call 716-267-2070 for more details. Not a knitter? Yarn for Ewe also has antiques and collectables, as well as 18” doll clothing and accessories. Venture beyond downtown Randolph to 11144 Pope Road, where A Slice of Heaven Alpacas and their Simply Natural Alpaca Gift Shop awaits! Though the temperatures may be getting colder outside, inside the cozy gift shop you will find a variety of items to help you stay warm - alpaca socks, alpaca throws, alpaca slippers, sweaters and more! Discover “felted soap,” nesting ornaments, and their American-made stoneware just in time for the holidays. Find A Slice of Heaven Alpacas / Simply Natural Alpaca Gift Shop on Facebook to see their latest gift items, as well as photos of their alpaca herd including the babies that arrived this summer.

HOLIDAY EVENTS

Consider visiting Randolph during one of their exciting holiday events! On Sunday, Nov. 29, the Randolph Area Community Development Corporation (RACDC) is hosting My Doll and Me: A Christmas Tea at the Randolph Library. RANDOLPH IN THE SUMMER Be sure to return to Randolph this summer and explore a range of outdoor activities. Located at 78 Conewango Road, Cardinal Hills is an 18-hole course that provides a relaxing but challenging experience for golfers of all levels. Golfers can shop the pro shop for gear and equipment and take a break inside the Clubhouse. With a full bar and restaurant, the Clubhouse truly is the “pause that refreshes,” and is open to non-golfers to dine too. Pope Haven Campground, 11948 Pope Road, is another great place to spend the weekend or the whole summer! Pope Haven has pull-through and full hook-up sites for campers with 30 and 50 amp electrical service, plus free Wi-fi and newly renovated bathrooms and showers. ENJOY EVERY DAMN DAY

Serving Buffalo, NY Since 1994

One of such restaurants, the Hammer Back Bar & Grill, provides an up-tempo dining experience. From comfort foods like burgers and fries, to entrees like BBQ spare ribs, you can find something that satisfies the appetite. Not to mention, Hammer Back allows you to order your food online in advance. And food isn’t the only thing great about it - Hammer Back hosts Line Dancing on Mondays, College Nights on Wednesdays and Ladies Night on Thursdays. While the Hammer Back appeals to one demographic, Good Times also hosts ‘The Point.’ Named after Olean’s original name - Point Olean - The Point is a more private, up-scale dining option. A private entrance allows you to walk in and out as if you’re eating at any of Olean’s other nice dining spots. Home to an events center that can accommodate up to 1,400 people, Good Times boasts an outdoor recreation area with an upper and lower deck, making ‘standing room only’ one of the best seats in the house. Available for rent, Good Times will host anything from private work parties to huge family gatherings. Good Times isn’t only home to superb dining - it also can keep your entire day or night occupied. It has a 16-lane bowling alley, 18-hole miniature golf course, batting cages, an arcade and beach volleyball. Bowling and volleyball leagues are available if it so piques your interest, while you can go ahead and shoot your low round of the summer at putt-putt. Want to bring your kids and their friends for a birthday party? This is the spot to go.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR Around for the holidays? Olean will host its 30th Annual Santa Claus Lane Parade on Friday, Nov. 27. A festive evening complete with floats and Christmas vibes, the parade personifies the Christmas spirit. Awards are given out to the best floats, with categories such as the best float that typifies Christmas through the eyes of a child, best float that uses lights the best, and most religious/spiritual. Back it up … on Saturday, Nov. 24, head to Jamestown Community College Olean Campus for the 2nd annual Holiday Marketplace & Crafts Show. Handmade holiday crafts from local artists will be on display. Interested vendors can reserve their spot by heading to www.sunyjcc.edu. Last but not least, the Sports Show! Held at Good Times, the sports show is the best place for anyone who loves the outdoors. Vendors come and set up, while visitors have the option to learn about or buy the products in front of them and have any outdoor-related questions answered. Winners at the raffle last year took home some excellent prizes, including the Zombie line of knives from KA-BAR (a CUTCO subsidiary).

PIT-STOP IN ALLEGANY On your way back to Ellicottville, spend some time in the quaint town of Allegany. Cruise around St. Bonaventure University’s historic (150+ year old) campus, or stop by the St. Bonaventure Church for Mass. Head to The Burton Bar for a world-famous Burton Burger - or if you prefer wings, Randy’s Up The River on 5 Mile Road. There are tons of cool shops that line the streets in Allegany, many of you’re sure to find something you can’t live without. Head to the Reilly Center at St. Bona to see some Division-I men’s basketball, as the Bonnies tip off in their season opener against Binghamton on Nov. 13. Or if you prefer to participate in the activity yourself, check the Turkey Trot 5K run/walk at Bonaventure Nov. 26. Bring a nonperishable food item to help support the local food pantry. More information on both events can be found at www.sbu.edu.

Enjoy a ride in a vintage biplane soaring above the forestlands of the Kinzua Gorge and the upper Alleghenies. Experienced pilot Bruce Klein offers rides in his beautifully restored, open-cockpit, 1943 Boeing Stearman. This biplane ride is a safe and enjoyable - as well as memorable - experience. Take advantage of this bird’s eye view to see the picturesque beauty of the fields, forest, rivers and streams from above. One manmade architectural attraction best seen by air is the amazing Kinzua Sky Walk at the Kinzua Bridge State Park. Vintage Bi-Plane Rides leave from the Bradford Regional Airport, 212 Airport Drive in Lewis Run, PA. Traditionally the best fall foliage viewing is the last two weeks of September and the first two weeks of October. Individual rates, group rates and gift certificates are available. Call ahead to book your flight at 814-642-9486 or 814-558-5376. Feeling Adventurous? FreeFall Oz Skydiving, 296 Faulkner Road in Shinglehouse, PA, offers tandem jumps for first time jumpers. First time jumpers will receive excellent personalized instruction, and video recordings of your jump are available. For those who want to bring a group, specialized rates are available along with overnight accommodations at Oz Homestay, a charming B&B located beside the fields where the skydiving takes place. To schedule a tandem jump or for more info on Oz’s Homestay, call 716-378-2211 or visit freefallozskydiving.com.

WALK THE TRACKS ACROSS THE SKY The Kinzua Sky Walk is the region’s “must see” attraction. This historic masterpiece of engineering and ingenuity is built on six of the original towers of the Kinzua Viaduct, which was once the highest and longest viaduct in the world. First constructed in 1882 and used for commerce and tourist excursions, the viaduct was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003. In the fall of 2011, the viaduct was reinvented as the Kinzua Sky Walk, which allows visitors to once again “Walk the Tracks Across the Sky.” Take a stroll out 624 feet on the skywalk into the vast Kinzua Gorge where you have a 360-degree view of the wildly beautiful landscape. Once you reach the end of the skywalk, you will be treated to another astonishing view while peering through the partial glass platform to the valley floor 225 feet below.

HIT THE TRAILS Visitors can also enjoy the Kinzua Bridge State Park from yet another vantage point - by land. The General Thomas L. Kane Trail is a one-mile loop, easy hiking trail within the state park. Expect to see a diverse sampling of tree species, wildlife and a wide variety of birds. The new Kinzua Creek Trail is a challenging trail for experienced hikers which crossbacks down the side of the gorge to Kinzua Creek. From this vantage point, hikers get a very unique perspective of the steel structure of the skywalk and they can also view eleven of the historic viaduct’s fallen towers. Admission is free. The park is open daily from 8am to dusk. Picnic tables located throughout the park are shaded by a tree canopy with some offering views of the Kinzua Sky Walk. The Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway is a designated shared use hike/ bike corridor connecting Pennsylvania Route 6 to the state park, so be sure to bring your bike! The Marilla Trail System is a great interconnected trail system of five separate trails of different difficulty levels. A local favorite is the Marilla Bridges Trail, which loops around the Marilla Reservoir. This one-mile loop offers forest and water vistas. Highlights include a covered wooden bridge, three rustic wooden trestle bridges, and a delightful gazebo located at the southwestern corner of the trail. The trailhead is located along Route 346, five miles west of the City of Bradford. Fishing and kayaking are allowed.

VIEWS FROM THE RIVER

Canoe and kayaks are available for rent at Willow Bay Recreational Area in the Allegheny National Forest. For pricing and reservations contact Allegheny Site Management at 814-368-4158. For floating along the river - the Allegheny River Trail begins near the headwaters of the Allegheny River near Port Allegany in Pennsylvania, with water access sites also in Portville and Olean, New York.
