SK8EVL: GROUP LAUNCHES EFFORTS TO BUILD A SKATEPARK IN ELLICOTTVILLE
Before we begin, let’s get something out of the way. If you are of the attitude that skateboarding (and snowboarding, for that matter) consists of shady kids looking for trouble, please get out from the rock you’ve been living under. No longer are these sports — or activities, whichever you’d prefer — antiestablishment, or any of the other preconceived notions society likes to label something different. Skateboarding is going to be an Olympic sport in 2020, and let’s be honest — would you rather our youth be glued to Fortnite, or be outside getting exercise and building confidence? A local group is working with the Tony Hawk Foundation to bring a skateboard park to Ellicottville, and fundraising efforts are already underway ... page 07

CUTTING EDGE
The Kiss Mobile
By Mary Heyl When Kathleen O’Neil was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in 2009, she knew she had a difficult road ahead of her, and that her physical fight was only part of the journey. A Salamanca, New York native, O’Neil was diagnosed with leukemia at age 26 and went through two and a half years of chemotherapy at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo. While there, she learned her white blood cell count would drop significantly, which would weaken her immune system and make her very susceptible to illness. O’Neil was advised against hugging and kissing her family members during a time in her life when she needed them the most. Her fight against the disease proved to be as emotionally painful and exhausting as it was physically – a battle all too familiar to those fighting cancer or other life-altering illnesses. “As I was going through treatment at Roswell, I knew I wanted to do something bigger, better and more powerful than myself,” O’Neil explained. “We’ve spent the last 10 years raising money for cancer research, as well as for patients and families for their hardships during their cancer journey.”
O’Neil is excited to celebrate eight years in remission (and to enjoy the hugs and kisses of her family) and is looking forward to another successful golf tournament. “It’s a really fun day for a great cause,” she said. “We cap it at 144 participants, and every year, we’re full!” Registration for the four-person scramble begins at noon, with tee-off at 1pm. The fundraiser also includes dinner, basket raffles and auctions, which golfers and non-golfers can participate in. The Randolph Volunteer Fire Department will be doing a 50/50 golf ball drop on the course, “which was a big hit last year,” said O’Neil. This year’s proceeds will again benefit cancer research and cancer patients and their families in need of financial support. O’Neil is also looking forward to introducing GKCG’s latest endeavor with golfers, the Kiss Company. “This is a new venture that we’re working on,” O’Neil explained. “We’re transitioning the focus from solely oncology to supporting people who are on difficult journeys, whether it’s a journey with cancer or another kind of illness. My father was diagnosed with ALS, so he’s really been my strength and inspiration to want to help people going through all kinds of difficulties.” The goal of the Kiss Company is to offer self-care services to those in need of healing. “We’d like to offer people a personal, healing touch treatment in the comfort of their own homes or partner with local salons and spas to offer massage therapy, hand massages, foot massages, mini manicures or pedicures for women.” Currently, Ellicottville Oasis Spa has partnered with GKCG, and O’Neil is hoping to work with more local businesses. Those interested in partnering with the Kiss Company can contact O’Neil at 716-984-1128. Individuals in the community will be able to contact the Kiss Company to “send a kiss” in the form of a personal spa treatment to someone in need of healing. The Kiss Mobile can bring that kind of care directly to them if they are unable to visit a partner spa. “My brother-in-law put it really well,” said O’Neil of GKCG’s expanding mission. “A lot has happened in our lives during the past 10 years since we launched GKCG, and a lot will continue to happen. As we evolve, we want to help even more people along the way.” O’Neil invites all to participate in the Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye golf tournament, attend the dinner or sponsor a hole. To learn more about the tournament and GKCG, visit gottakisscancergoodbye.org or email gottakisscancergoodbye@gmail.com. You can also search Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye on Facebook. O’Neil extends her sincere gratitude to Port X Logistics, Union Concrete, Randolph Auto Supply, and the many other local business and donors who continue to support the tournament and GKCG each year.

Businesses On the Move
Two Ellicottville hot spots are finishing up the final touches on their new locations By Spencer Timkey
THE GIN MILL: OH THAT NEW BAR SMELL! An Ellicottville staple keeps the party going
BURRITOS, BIKES AND BREWS Rolling forward: More parking, more options!
@gin_mill_ellicottville
@evillebikeandbean photo: @spence_timkey
It’s as much of an institution as it is a bar. The flash of the neon lights draw your eyes, the live music your ears. It doesn’t matter if it’s Christmas or Thanksgiving or literally any other day, because it stays open all 365. If you’ve been to Ellicottville, you know The Gin Mill. Boasting a rich history, the bar has changed ownership three times since its inception. Current owners Ed and Maribeth Rick purchased the business in 2007 and continued operating it in a fashion consistent with previous ownership. Live music multiple nights a week, a laid-back atmosphere, pub food and friendly staff made the transition a seamless one. But oft times, growth requires change. “We made the move to operate in a building we own,” Ed Rick said. “The business outgrew the space. We don’t own the building The Gin Mill is currently in, and we wanted to ensure it stays an Ellicottville staple.” In 2015, the Ricks purchased the building at 34 E. Washington (home of the former DJ’s Restaurant, A Touch of Ellicottville and Bike & Bean) and began its transformation. After tenant leases ran up, they started with renovating the upstairs, turning them into luxury accommodations dubbed Brickstone Suites. “We let all of the leases run up before we began with the downstairs,” Maribeth said. “We also wanted to maintain a lot of the history in that building — there’s some very cool stuff in there — so the work wasn’t rushed. We want to get it right the first time.” They’re getting it right. You’re greeted by a 36-foot, completely restored bar when you walk in, complemented by original brick walls behind it. The stage — which before, could host a 3- (or very tightly) 4-piece band — has tripled in size. On one side, original copper ceilings soar 16-feet above your head. Due to an upstairs apartment fire years ago, the adjacent ceiling had to be ripped out. But the Ricks found a copper pattern that matches almost perfectly. All in all, they’ve more than tripled the workable square footage. Continue in, where a separate dining area will allow for increased capacity. Behind a sliding barn door will lie The Carriage House, one of the most exciting new things about the move. A smaller area, it will offer high-end wines, liquors and cocktails where patrons can go if they want to drink in a quieter setting. “It was a little niche that was missing here,” Ed explained. “We’ll offer small plate appetizers, away from the hubbub of the typical bar scene. It’s going to create a quiet atmosphere. We’re very excited about that.” The staff will remain the same, but both Ed and Maribeth noted they’ll be looking for help once they’re open in the new location. The menu will stay similar to what it looks like now, but they’ll eventually add on — something they couldn’t do before because of their limited kitchen space. “We want people to know that just because we’re moving, they shouldn’t expect anything different,” they said. “We’re keeping the same vibe as always. Everything in here — the animals, the Jack Daniels stained glass sign, the Rolling Rock cooler — will make the move. And we’re not planning on shutting down for down time. We’re going to have a party, and the next day we’ll make the move.” The Gin Mill plans to move into their new digs August 1, but stay updated on all of the happenings on their Facebook page. “We’re excited, and a little sad,” Maribeth said. “But we’re proud of the work we’ve done so far, and proud of what we’ve done to that corner. We can’t wait to get in there.”
It’s always fun to hear the reaction when you tell someone there’s a business that works on bikes and makes world-class burritos. A combination of two awesome things, Bike & Bean keeps bikes on the road all the while providing a healthy, farmfresh source of flavor. But similar to The Gin Mill, Bike & Bean simply outgrew their space. Dennis Baldwin, a prolific mountain biker and lover of all things two wheels, bought the bike business from Mud, Sweat n’ Gears in 2007 before opening Bike & Bean in 2013. Previously at 30 Washington Street, Baldwin has been hard at work getting the new location ready at 11 Martha Street (the site of the former Agway). “There’s space in here for what we want to do, and it fit really well,” he said. “We needed more room. The fact that this space was fresh and could be built out the way we wanted made the decision a lot easier. In the old spot, it was put together in a way we couldn’t really change, but now the flow will be way better.” Anymore, Ellicottville gets enough traction where it’s not critical for a business to be nestled on the main drag. One of the biggest advantages of the move? Parking. As any visitor knows, finding a parking spot on a busy weekend can be a nightmare. Having the ability for patrons — especially ones who want their bikes serviced — will be able to find a spot hassle free. “It’s a cool vibe over here,” he said. “Having parking will make it easier for people to get their bikes in, or not have to double park if they order out.” The wide open concept of the section Baldwin is working on will allow for a repair area, bathroom, prep area and kitchen. In a few weeks, he’ll place three big tables along the windows that get lots of natural light, plus an outside dining area as well. “With a little more kitchen space, we can expand the menu,” he said. “And we’ve sent in our application for a beer & wine license, so people can enjoy a drink too.” Which brings us to the name. With the addition of new beverage offerings, Bike and Bean will transform into “Burritos Bikes and Brews.” Bicycle repairs and sales will still remain a great focus of Baldwin’s business, but coupled with the return of his delicious burritos and the addition of a tasty craft brew to wash it down, the new name fits the bill. Baldwin will stock a small selection of bikes, while still offering his repair and assembly services. All of the accessory stuff you need — helmets, locks, gloves, parts, etc. — will also be available in the coming weeks. “Right now, the tentative opening is Summer Festival Weekend (the 4th of July), when we can open the doors. We’re planning on having a grand opening later in the summer when we’ll hopefully be humming along.” Burritos Bikes and Brews invites you to ride with them in their Monday night shop rides (meet at the shop at 6 o’clock sharp) and to stay tuned to opening updates on Facebook/Instagram (@evillebikeandbean). “It’s exciting,” Baldwin said. “We’ll maintain the same vibe over here. Adding the beer and outside seating will make for a nice addition after a day on the bike or skis/ snowboards. It’s going to be fun.”

The late Ralph C. Wilson, Jr., former owner of the Buffalo Bills, was an outstanding human being. His fund, distributed through the foundation bearing his name, supports local communities throughout western New York and southeast Michigan. In 2018, the foundation announced that $200 million would be split evenly between the two regions to create parks and trails. The Tony Hawk Foundation, created by the world’s most recognizable skateboarder, has donated over $9 million to assist in creating 623 skateparks nationwide. “Basically, we need to fundraise $250,000 and they’ll match it,” Perks said. “We’ll apply for the grant in September. Those grants will be approved in December, and from that point, we’ll have one year to raise the money. After that, we’ll have one year to build and open it. The skatepark’s proposed location is in the Village Park.”

Chris and Brenda Perks love skateboarding. When they began preliminary discussions a few years ago about opening their own indoor park, the cost and difficulty made them rethink it, as an endeavor of that magnitude would be almost impossible for the private sector without substantial investment. The dream would have to wait.
“Trevor heard about what we wanted to do and got in touch with us,” Brenda said. “We met with him and learned more about the Tony Hawk Foundation’s ‘Built-to-Play’ initiative. The organization has teamed up with the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation to offer communities matching grants (up to $250K) to build outdoor concrete skateparks that are open to the public and free to use. There are some requirements to qualify, but Ellicottville matches all of them. We’re in the running for it.”

Great! Glad we’re all on the same page.
But skateboarding fate wouldn’t be so quick to be done with the Perks’ vision. Last August, they connected with The Tony Hawk Foundation’s western New York project manager Trevor Staples, an Ann Arbor, Michigan native who had heard rumblings of a young, local couple trying to stoke the local skateboarding fire.

ENCHANTÉ CABARET O’MALLEY’S IRISH PUB Enchanté Cabaret brings their theater performance to the Ellicottville Gazebo
A Conversation with TODD WAGNER HULICK: You will be performing at the Gazebo in Ellicottville on July 25 as part of their Summer Gazebo Series. Tell me a little bit about this performance. WAGNER: At Enchanté Cabaret we do dinner theater shows and traditional theater shows. For the show at the Gazebo, it lends itself to either/ or. Brian McFadden of the Ellicottville Chamber saw one of our shows last year and he really loved it, so he wanted us to do O’Malley’s Irish Pub for their Gazebo Series this year. HULICK: How many performers will you have with you for this show? WAGNER: There will be a cast of three. HULICK: In general, do you have cast changes for each booking or is it the same cast that travels around?
WAGNER: My primary actress is Sharon Rula Backos, and then I bring in different singers that are needed throughout the year, depending on what my needs are.
HULICK: Do the performances include a band or is it on a track? WAGNER: We used to have a band but then it got too hard to keep that up with

the traveling so everything we do now is track. It’s what you consider jukebox musicals where we write and produce a script and story and then incorporate well known songs into the script from artists like Billy Joel, Elton John, Phantom of the Opera, Andrea Bocelli, etc. That creates one cohesive style of a show.
HULICK: How long have you been doing this? WAGNER: Since 2001 … after 9/11 happened. That’s kind of like when we first
starting doing it.
By Melanie Hulick
HULICK: We certainly needed music and the arts then, and we certainly need it
Mark your calendars for Thursday, July 25 for a fun evening at the Ellicottville Gazebo to see a live performance of O’Malley’s Irish Pub by Enchanté Cabaret.
course of a couple years and then around 2004-2005 I started doing it full-time.
Enchanté Cabaret is a professional performing arts company that performs all over the Western New York area, as well as the Northeast and Midwestern regions of the United States. You may have seen the show performed as a dinner show last September in Ellicottville. This show at the Gazebo will be a first for the company as far as the performance style not being a dinner show, which founder and lead character Todd Wagner and I talk about in the following conversation. Since its humble beginnings as a small cabaret show in 2001, after 9/11, Wagner knew there was a need for something that could bring people together and focus on the arts instead of the tragedy. After a few years of performing the show parttime, he started performing full-time to accommodate the requests being received as word spread. Named the Best Cabaret Show in the Northeast, this is a must-see if you love the arts and could use an hour or so of relaxation and enjoyment and the perfect escape from the everyday hectic world. Wagner and I talked about the show and the places the show has performed, as well as areas that seem to have more of an appreciation for what they are seeing … one being Senior Centers. “Senior Center shows are big because a lot of them can’t get out to see the show, so I bring the show to them,” stated Wagner. Come out and see O’Malley’s Irish Pub performed for the first time in a Gazebo ... a fun and theatrical evening is promised to all that attend.
now.
WAGNER: Yes, exactly. It’s just kind of turned into a small little thing over the HULICK: You perform all around the area, as well as many other states … WAGNER: Yes. We are based out of Jamestown, NY now. I’ve traveled over the
last 15 years … all over the Northeast and including Florida with our shows … also Maine, Vermont, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania … pretty much everywhere.
HULICK: How many shows do you do a year? WAGNER: We do about a hundred shows a year. HULICK: Is there a certain place or area you like playing more so than others? WAGNER: No, not really. I love everywhere. People are people … that’s what
you find everywhere no matter where you go. They just want to be entertained. I do find it more refreshing when we go into the smaller communities and do the shows because they appreciate it a lot more than going into the big cities where there’s so much more going on. They don’t have the luxury of having constant entertainment in the smaller communities. When we do something there it’s nice … they appreciate it more.
HULICK: Do you do seasonal or holiday shows like Christmas? WAGNER: Every single show that we do is an either/or. The way it’s written we can
do the Irish show, a Christmas show or our big Halloween musical and do it in a restaurant, a banquet hall or a regular theater … it can even be in a living room or a gazebo … it doesn’t really matter what or where it is. This performance in the Ellicottville Gazebo will be the first time we’re doing O’Malley’s not as a dinner show. That’s exciting and I’m really looking forward to it. I hope everyone will come out and see us!

THE SUMMER LOCAL ~ JULY 2019 ... Page 11
Whether it be a glass or a bottle, enjoy your favorite flavor on the Winery’s new outdoor space @wineryofevl
By Spencer Timkey There are few things better than enjoying a few cocktails while sitting outside on a nice summer night. Seeing as Ellicottville’s weather from November through March often equals that found on Hoth (not complaining, it’s a ski town!), a day or night where you can sit outside without wearing multiple layers feels pretty great. A few months ago, the Winery of Ellicottville began (and finished) construction on a new 2ndstory deck overlooking Monroe Street, offering visitors the chance to enjoy a glass or bottle of their favorite wine while enjoying the sunshine. The Winery, which opened in 2010, has become an Ellicottville staple, offering a variety of homegrown, New York State-inspired wines. As with many other local businesses, they simply needed more room. “We were looking to create a little more square footage for our guests to sit down, relax and enjoy some wine,” said Beth Sheehy, part of a family ownership of the Winery. “The tasting room downstairs is great, but it’s a little small. We’ve seen lots of people come in to taste wine, but some want to stay for a bottle. We decided that offering a nice spot for them to enjoy it during the warmer months would really enhance the experience.” The deck, which will feature couches, small tables, a large table for groups and a lounge area, is open currently. An on-hand server will take orders for both wine and small plate menu, which features items like olives, nuts, cheeses, charcuterie and other snack-type items. The Winery will also be featuring its summertime wines. They’ve re-released the Berry Hard Cider, a hard cider with blueberry and raspberry wine added. Also available will be the Greuner Veltliner, an up-and-coming grape variety in this area; it is a dryer white with a little spice on the finish. “There are a lot of really nice, summery wines that are refreshing on a hot day,” Sheehy said. “The Riesling is really nice, and we’ve got a couple of sangrias that are very popular. All of these wines are available to taste and purchase.” The entire wine-making process is done in-house at the Winery, from pressing to bottling to labels. “In the fall, we harvest the grapes or other fruit and bring them in, and after that, there are a couple of different ways to go about it,” she said. “We crush and press the grapes. Depending on the type of wine, we either let them wit on the skins for a while or press them right away. The dry reds are aged in barrels, and dry whites go into stainless steel tanks. The entire cycle — again, depending on the wine — can take 3-4 or 18-24 months.” Distribution for the Winery is still local, with representation in stores from Buffalo to Jamestown. One of the coolest things they’ve done is partner with Rock Autism, a local non-profit that uses music to contribute to art and music programs serving youth and adults on the autistic spectrum. “The Rock Autism Riesling came out last summer, when the organization had its first music festival here in Ellicottville,” Sheehy said. “A portion of the proceeds go to the organization, which is great.” Offering wine tastings whenever they’re open, visitors can sample 5 for $6 of whichever they pick off of the menu. They also offer a taste and tour option, where they give you an inside look at the process. A chocolate pairing option, with candy from Watson’s, has become quite popular. Or join the Wine Club, which has lots of benefits — the biggest being having wine shipped right to your door. During big festival weekends, like Jazz & Blues, The Taste of Ellicottville and Rock N’ Oldies, a band will set up in the proximity of the Winery where guests can enjoy a glass outside and listen to music. The Winery offers tastings during these weekends too, and encourages visitors to come and relax — the deck is a new, added bonus. For more information on the Winery of Ellicottville, stop by at 14 Monroe Street, head to their website at wineryofellicottville.com, or follow them on FB and IG (@wineryofevl).
cont. from page 7 we first presented it, we were a little nervous there would be some blowback. Because there’s this stigma about skateboarding. But right off the bat, a lot of people were on board — realizing that this is a tourism town, and this will only help bring in more visitors. That leads us to the point made at the beginning of this story. A mom or dad that skated in the 1970s and 80s — when the sport was in its infancy — are now all grown up, married, have families of their own and have passed the thrill of four wheels onto their children. A majority of skateboarders are predominantly teenagers and young adults, but it’s not uncommon to find those now-moms and dads still rippin’ it up. And for those moms and dads that don’t skate, you’ll see them dropping their kids off to skate at the proposed park, then they’re going to head into the Village and eat, drink and shop. There’s an economic impact here. The Perks’ have been working with Kathy Elser, a local grant writer (and Chris’ aunt), and the Village’s grant writer, Diana Cihak, to assist in seeking out money from local, county and state grants. And the committee currently has the wheels in motion for a ton of fun, unique fundraising ideas. The support of the community throughout this entire process will be critical. “We really want to emphasize — this isn’t our project. It’s the community’s project,” Perks said. “Not only does having a skatepark encourage people to get outside, but there’s a socialization aspect of it as well. There are so many things it can be utilized for besides skateboarding. Lessons, annual events that can raise money for other organizations, and a place for people to feel a part of something. Anyone that wants to get involved, we’re highly encouraging them to do so.” The proposed Ellicottville Skatepark, which will be free and open to the public, is not just limited to skateboarding. Scooters, roller blades and BMX bikes will all be allowed as well. Once the committee gets into the design process, they will encourage feedback from the community. For more information on getting involved, email ellicottvilleskatepark@gmail.com or follow them on Facebook/Instagram @sk8evl.

ART + FOOD = WINNING COMBINATION By Louisa Benatovich
TRI-COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL Thriving art organization celebrates new home and larger outreach
@artscouncil
Being Western New Yorkers, it is easy to say that we simply live in art. The undulating hills, magnificent autumn leaves, and picturesque ponds are enough to make John James Audubon return for a last hurrah. Upon the dawn of the new millennium, however, there still seemed to be something missing from the local art community. Neighboring creators had nowhere to display their works, no place to meet and discuss their passions. This all changed in 1998 after the founding of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. Filling a much-needed gap, the organization resided for 13 years at the Allegany High School. In 2011, the Arts Council moved to a larger location at 100 West Main Street in Allegany. They launched a new retail space for artists to sell their work and expanded their available art and pottery studios. Over the years, the Arts Council grew to include not only Cattaraugus County, but Allegany and Chautauqua Counties as well. With these additions, the Arts Council officially changed its name to the “Tri-County Arts Council” to better reflect the communities they serve. Now catering to over 3800 square miles, it is no wonder that, in 2018, the Arts Council found that they had outgrown their current home. After months of searching and grant-writing, the Council is proud to announce their monumental move to 110 West State Street in Olean, New York! Despite the many changes of address, the goal of the Arts Council has always stayed the same. From offering studio spaces to hosting workshops for all ages and skill-levels, the Council is committed to fostering creativity in our community. They strive to be the chief sponsor of diverse activities and programs that promote the arts and expand their accessibility in the area. As stated boldly on their website, the Council is “transforming the quality of life in our region through education, service and community outreach.” To put it marvelously simply, they believe in the arts. There is no better example of a believer than Tina Hastings, the Council’s current executive director. “I am passionate about the Tri-County Arts Council because I believe that art is an important part of our lives,” she says. “People find creative expression in making art. A recent article I read even suggested that you don’t even have to be good at it. The process of just being creative can be transformative. Viewing art can invoke many different feelings and it’s amazing to see how different styles, mediums, and subjects can influence the viewer in ways the artist may not have even considered. Art exposes us to differing viewpoints. It can help our children develop critical thinking skills they can apply in other areas of their lives. We need art in our world and our local communities. In many ways, this is what the Tri-County Arts Council does and I’m happy to be part of it.” “I invite everyone to become involved with our organization,” Hastings continues, “because a thriving arts association is wonderful to have in any city or town. I believe that what we offer helps to enhance the communities that we serve, and we want to make art available to everyone who wants to be involved.” Ultimately, it is the community that helps small arts organizations thrive and boosts their ability to offer quality, affordable programs. “It is in the difficult times that art finds its most vital role,” the website explains, “the role of improving quality of life.” The Tri-County Arts Council invites you to become a member of something more - more than just paint supplies, kilns, and occasional exhibitions. This is an organization passionate about happiness and committed to change for the better. The Tri-County Arts Council will host a Members Exhibition at their new location on Friday, July 19 from 6-8pm. All members are invited to submit one work to be included in the exhibition. The event is free and open to the public. It is the perfect way to get a taste of what artists in the area are creating. The Council is also celebrating Art in the Park in conjunction with Taste of Olean coming up on Sunday, July 28. The event is held at the War Veterans Park in Olean. To top it off, the Council will be hosting the Southern Tier Biennial, a contemporary art exhibition, on Saturday, September 21 in two locations: the Tri-County Arts Council and the JCC Center Gallery in Olean. Check out www.myartscouncil.net for more information on events and workshops near you.

ART IN THE PARK This year’s Taste is accompanied by its long-time friend, Art in the Park. Hosted by the Tri-County Arts Council, this juried event is an opportunity for local artists to truly strut their stuff. With engaging displays and artists in action for you to enjoy, the event promises to be the perfect complement to the delicious local fare. Interact with the artists in residence as you leisurely stroll the grounds with munchies in hand. Be on the lookout for entertainment hosted by the Olean Theatre Workshop with guest appearances by Olean High School performance groups and the Olean Community Theatre. The Jamestown Community College Alumni Association is also hosting a market where local goods such as honey, preserves, and delicious maple syrup can be purchased to take home. If you happen to have leftovers, Pampered Chef and Tupperware will be sponsoring booths with great deals on cookware and containers for the chef in all of us. Work off the extra pizza with free swimming and roller skating at the Taste, or take a turn on the YMCA sponsored bounce house. With so much to do, the Taste of Olean/Art in the Park is truly an event for the whole family. Take a moment to let loose and enjoy the summer! Visit oleanny.com for more information..

Looking back to yesterday, when Robbie was just a kid
On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, Tonawanda native, Robbie Knab was in a tragic snowboarding accident in the state of Washington leaving the 22 year old paralyzed. After several weeks in the Washington Trauma Center, Robbie has now been moved to the Craig Spinal Recovery Center in Denver, Colorado, for continued evaluation and start of his rehabilitation. The out-of-pocket expense to his family is quickly mounting as insurance does not cover Robbie’s transport, nor all the months needed for his rehab. Robbie will require a much longer period of rehab than just the 2 months insurance covers. A page has been created to help defray Robbie’s medical costs. Any donation you could make to help assist with this financial burden, would be greatly appreciated.
You may be familiar with Robbie’s Family as he is the son of Bob & Fran Knab, owners of Phatman Boardshop in Amherst. They were instraumental in aiding with the creation of the Alix Rice Peace Park Foundation, so the Knab‘s are fully aware of what it takes to help those in the community. It took years of hard work to achieve that goal and the Knab Family was there every step of that journey.
