By Spencer Timkey While there are many ways ski resorts across the country get the masses hyped on the coming season, it’s not frequent they offer an opportunity to strap equipment on and participate. With less than 100 days (weather permitting) until we’re on the hill, ski and snowboard lovers know that winter is inevitably coming. It’s fun to sit at home and envision ripping through 18 inches of Lake Erie’s finest. But when you look outside and it’s 60º and sunshine, those pipe dreams can evaporate rather quickly. In an effort to bring winter a little closer, Holiday Valley is hitting the road this fall with the 1st Annual Rail Jam Road Show. Here’s the concept: a crew from HV will transport scaffolding, features and synthetic snow to the University of Buffalo (Sept. 23) and downtown Buffalo’s Canalside (Sept. 30) before the final stop at Holiday Valley Fall Festival weekend. After setup, skiers and snowboarders will get the chance to throw down the best trick in their arsenal - or experience the feeling of putting equipment on in the fall. “We wanted to give people the chance to participate in a fun, winter-oriented event before the snow flies,” said Niki Klein, Holiday Valley’s Sales Director. “And what better way to do it than bring the party to them? It’s easy to talk about how fun winter is - this is our way of showing it.” The mobile setup, built by Holiday Valley Parks boss Mike Nenno, will get its debut at UB’s Stampede Square before the Bulls take on the Florida Atlantic Owls. Using synthetic snow eliminates the need to haul ice shavings from a nearby ice rink, and a 27º grade drop-in will give participants plenty of speed to throw down tricks on the feature. “This is something we’ve never done before, but we’ve got a feeling that it’s really going to get people excited for winter,” Klein said. “Even if you’re not participating, it’s incredibly unique - imagine walking through Canalside and seeing a bunch of people walking around in ski and snowboard boots. You’re automatically going to be drawn to at least come over and check it out.” Holiday Valley’s College Pass may be the best deal going. Anyone in higher education can buy the $199 pass (unlimited nights) or $299 pass (unlimited nights and weekdays). A myriad of Ultimate Pass options give winter lovers an affordable, flexible option if they don’t want to buy a full Classic Season Pass. The concept of the Road Show Rail Jam, developed by Klein, Nenno and others in the Holiday Valley brain trust, takes the resort out of its comfort zone. On paper, the logistics of the event seemed daunting - development, setup, insurance, partners, marketing, etc. but once the vision was there, heads came together to ensure its success. “We were very fortunate to have solid contacts at both UB and Canalside,” Klein said. “When we brought the idea to the table, both spots were incredibly receptive. This isn’t something like yoga where anyone can participate - it’s a very select subset of the market, one that both loves skiing/snowboarding and owns their own equipment. But between the scaffolding, signage, music and actual participants, it’s definitely going to turn some heads.” The Canalside and Holiday Valley stops feature DJ Tyler Swift, who will play both MC and hype man. Participants and spectators will be able to buy their College/Ultimate Pass on-site, or pick the brains of Holiday Valley reps to see which pass is best for them depending on their price range/schedule. Holiday Valley’s Rail Jam Road Show takes place at the University of Buffalo’s Stampede Square on Saturday, Sept. 23, Canalside Saturday, Sept. 30, before wrapping up at Holiday Valley during Fall Fest. Helmets and equipment required. For more information, head to www.holidayvalley.com/college or shop your pass at www.holidayvalley.com/winterpasses.

ELLICOTTVILLE A HUB FOR HIGH-ENERGY COMPETITION ELLICOTTVILLE LACROSSE FESTIVAL Former Pro, Tournament Coordinator to bring 40+ teams to town

CYCLOCROSS MAKES ITS RETURN TO HOLIMONT HoliCX2 | October 22 | www.bikereg.com

SEPT. 22-24

ellicottvillelacrosse.com By Spencer Timkey

By Greg Culver

At the first mention of the Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival, your ears perk up. Ellicottville … and lacrosse? The two aren’t exactly synonymous. With few programs in the immediate area and no team at Ellicottville Central, you might wonder why a tournament coordinator and former professional player would want to bring 40+ teams here for a tournament.

Bicycle riders love the fall - the colorful landscape, the cool crisp air and the smell of nature …. Ahhhhh. Now add a zig zag course with a splash of mud, sprinkle in some grass, a handful of barriers and wrap everything in spandex … Yee-haw, now you got yourself a cyclocross race! HoliMont will host its 2nd annual cyclocross race on Sunday, October 22 … dubbed HoliCX2.

But then you dig a little deeper, realizing that Ellicottville would be a perfect location. A town boasting two ski resorts that’s easily accessible from Canada, Ohio and upstate New York. A destination setting pre-loaded with lodging, food, and the logistical capability to host the teams and their families. Two passionate men who have made lacrosse their life could have picked anywhere else in the area, but they chose Ellicottville. The 1st Annual Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival comes to town September 22-24. Ryan Powell, a 4-time All-American at Syracuse, spent 12 years playing professional lacrosse from Buffalo to Boston to Portland. After his pro career ended, he linked with Rochester’s Mike Riorden - a former college lacrosse player himself who runs indoor facilities, coaches and continues to play. The two operate on the same wavelength when it comes to lacrosse. Growing the sport has become their life mission and business, doing things like tournaments, training sessions and camps. “We had just finished a box lacrosse session for kids, and afterwards over beers and burgers, Mike and I talked about developing a new tournament,” Powell said. “This is something we had both wanted to do. When we discussed location, Mike mentioned this place called Ellicottville - he and his wife had ridden their motorcycle down here quite a bit - and after we came to visit, we knew this was the spot.” Riorden, inducted into the Rochester Sports Hall of Fame last year for lacrosse, said the idea for the Ellicottville tournament came in 2004 when he was in Vail. “There’s a tournament in Vail we go out to every year,” Riorden added. “It’s an amazing place to host a lacrosse tournament, and it’s that atmosphere we were looking for. The mountains, the ski resort, the feel of the town … it all works. I’ve been waiting to do this with someone, and after Ryan and I started working together, I approached him about it. We’ve been working with the [Ellicottville] Chamber of Commerce for just over a year getting this ready to go.” There are over 40 teams signed up, and for the first year of a tournament, that’s an excellent number. Both junior and adult teams will travel from Toronto, Ohio, New Jersey, Rochester, Syracuse and other towns around the country. “It’s important that the first year is a success,” Riorden said. “When a tournament goes off well, word spreads fast amongst the lacrosse community. And while it’s great when a team wins, the real camaraderie is built off the field. Having all of the bars and restaurants in the village really added to what makes this such a great tournament spot.” The passion these two share for the sport is apparent, and they’ve got the credentials to back it up. Riorden’s son, Blaze, recently resigned with the Buffalo Bandits - he’s a goaltender - and while at the University of Albany, scored a goal against Cornell that was nominated for an ESPN ESPY award. He lost … to New York Giants receiver, Odell Beckham. Riorden’s other son plays college lax, and he played in school as well before going semi-pro. To this day, he continues to travel (and play) in tournaments across the country. Powell shared his 4-time All-American accolades with his two brothers. “We’ve made lacrosse our life,” Riorden said. “And we’re excited to bring this tournament to Ellicottville. The Chamber and town have been incredibly accommodating. It’s a perfect place, the perfect time, and we’re hoping Year 1 is a resounding success.” The 1st Annual Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival goes down September 22-24, and games will be played at the Village Park and Ellicottville Central School. For more information, head to www.ellicottvillelacrosse.com.

Cyclocross? Yes, cyclocross. It’s not your average bicycle race. There are many stories of how cyclocross racing got its start. It’s kind of like the origins of snowboarding - there is always some old-timer claiming to be the first. “Yeah I remember when I rode my bike through a field and then jumped over a fence while a crazy bull was chasing me. Next thing you know they went and made a race out of it.” The true origins of cross trace back to Europe, and by most accounts, it was a way to train during the off-season for long bicycle races like the Tour De France. In 1910 Belgium hosted the first national cyclocross championship and in 1924, Paris, France was the location of the first international race, Le Critérium International de Cross-Country CycloPédestre. As it goes with most organized competitions, they end up being governed by a group of rule makers, and in 1950, UCI regulated its first cyclocross race which happened to be the world championships in Paris. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that cross racing got some traction in the U.S. Participation grew through the 90’s bike boom and is still growing today. Boulder, Colorado has become a hot bed for cross and hosts numerous races and events throughout the year. As for our local scene, there are many sponsors and promoters holding races all over Western New York. Two years ago, local legend and racer John Roden had the idea of combining the popular cross races in the area into an overall series with a focus on families. WNY Cross Series (www.wnycyclocross.com) was born. There are classes for all ages and abilities; a wonderful way to get the whole family active and outdoors. Great friendships and rivalries have formed over the years, and I can tell you first-hand that it is amazing to watch many young riders transform into young competitive adults. There’s nothing more rewarding (and defeating) than getting beat by a kid who you watched start on training wheels. As the Marketing Director for HoliMont, I am always looking for new ways to showcase the club. There were no cyclocross races in Ellicottville, but I knew that there was a huge contingency of riders in the area including members of the club. When I pitched the idea of bringing cyclocross to HoliMont last year, I wasn’t sure how the idea would be received, but by the end of August 2016, we were mapping out a course, had a couple of sponsors and buy-in from the board. The first race was held during Ellicottville’s Fall Festival and it drew in 100 registered racers from all over. Although the event experienced cold and damp conditions, the race was a huge success. The course offered challenging lines and features with the fall foliage creating a magnificent backdrop. The balance of a good course comes from good flow, unique features and a high level of suffering. You know you did your job well when racers love and hate you all at the same time. One of the best photos from the race was of three veteran racers sitting on the grass, covered in mud looking completely drained but smiling the whole time. Many people have compared grueling bike races to hitting yourself in the head repeatedly with a hammer … it feels so good when you stop. So, if you like bikes and are looking for a challenge, sign up for this year’s race. If you like to watch other people suffer where heckling and cow bells are not only allowed but encouraged, then mark your calendar for Oct. 22. This year’s race will take place a couple weeks after Fall Festival to allow us to focus on the race event by itself. Registration details, times of events and other information can be found online at www.bikereg.com. If you’re the type to wait till the last minute, we will have day-of-registration open at 8:30am race day. Racing, parking and spectators will all enter at the WestMont entrance located at Ridgeway drive, off Route 242. There will be a fun kids course free to all racers ages 8 and under. All other racers will need a valid USAC license or buy a one-day license for $10 on top of the registration fee. Did I mention socks? The first 100 people to register get a free pair of HoliMont bicycle socks! For more information or if you would like to set up on vendor row, please call HoliMont at 716-699-2320 or email greg@holimont.com.

Whether you’re a beginner, hardcore trail runner, or someone in between, consider lacing up to experience the stunning scenic beauty of the Marilla Trail Run. Set for Saturday, October 14, participants have the option to race 14 miles, 7 miles, or hike 4 miles - truly something for all endurance levels. Who wouldn’t want to take advantage of the “world class wilderness” that the Marilla reservoir in Bradford, PA, has to offer? “The thing I like most about this race is that it appeals to such a wide range of runners. For the first time trail runner, there will be hills and technical trails, but it’s not too demanding. For the seasoned veteran - you’ll just love it!” said Josh Preston, Race Director. To elaborate, runners are taken over a variety of terraingravel paths, dirt trails, and winding single track, with aid stations spread throughout. Except for one single road crossing, the 14 and 7 mile courses are 100% off-road. The race features state-of-the-art chip timing by Score This!!! Following the race, stick around for a delicious BBQ chicken lunch, awards, and door prizes! Everyone who crosses the finish line will receive a finisher medal, and awards will be given to age groups and overall best times. Last year, finishers also received custom pint glasses; this year’s prizes are still in the works at the current moment. Josh said, “At the end of the race, we draw bib numbers and pass out a ton of free giveaways to our participants.” Last year, gifts from donators and sponsors included jackets, socks, water bottles and watches, to name a few! When Josh started trail running locally about 5-6 years ago, he was shocked that there were so many beautiful trails in the Bradford, PA, area that runners weren’t taking advantage of. This motivated him to organize the Marilla Trail Run; one of his biggest goals has been trying to connect this race to the trail running community to let them know it’s around. All proceeds from the Marilla Trail Race will benefit the Tuna Valley Trail Association and their ongoing commitment to the development and maintenance of trails locally in the Tuna Valley. For more information, find them on Facebook and Instagram @marillatrailrace, or head to their website www.marillatrailrace.com. For questions, email the race director at hello@marillatrailrace.com.

On Saturday, October 28, the EVL Halloween Half Marathon & 5K return to downtown Ellicottville, NY for a “scary” good time! This race is a can’t-miss opportunity if you’re looking to have some festive fun in a competitive yet family-friendly race event. Well-known for the vast array of runners who attend clad in their spookiest and most creative costumes, athletes of all abilities are encouraged to enter! Whether choosing 13.1 or 3.1 miles, runners from near and far look forward to the opportunity to tread over scenic country roads in cooler temps, and treat themselves to the fabulous after-party held at the Ellicottville Brewing Company. You can expect EBC’s Beer Garden to be decorated for Halloween, with brews a flowin’, some tasty chili to warm your soul, and a live DJ spinning good vibes and handing out prizes for plenty of super fun crowd participation contests! Although not mandatory, runners are encouraged to dress in costume, with awards for Best Group (two or more people), Best Individual, Funniest, Scariest, Most Girly, Best Kid, and Best in Show! Of course, there will also be male and female awards given based on age groups for the run itself. Everyone receives a custom finisher medal, t-shirt, and swag bag. “The EVL Half Marathon & 5K was the first event we hosted,” said Gwen Bush, Race Director. “Every year we have grown in size, and we try to add new aspects to the race to make it exciting for our athletes who come back year after year.” (As mentioned earlier, Gwen and Doug Bush also direct the 4 for 44 and the Happy Half & 5K race.) Gwen continued, “We have amazing volunteers. They are the ones handing athletes water and food, giving registration packets, cleaning up, and passing out medals. Ellicottville Brewing Company and Ellicottville Entertainment throw a fun-filled after-party with great beer, hilarious games, and a lot of prizes are sponsored by the local merchants in Ellicottville. This event certainly would not be the same without the Ellicottville residents, the local governments, the police departments, the sheriff’s department, the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, and the businesses that support the race.”

SEPTEMBER 10 • CHAUTAUQUA LAKE On Sunday, September 10, runners will have an opportunity to experience a truly unique race operating on the concept of a four-person relay, with each runner conquering a section of the course which circles around beautiful Chautauqua Lake! Charming scenic backdrops will take competitors through lakeside villages, parks, wine country, and even passes through Lucille Ball’s hometown. Not to mention, it begins and ends at the award winning Southern Tier Brewing Company! Who can say no to that? In its inaugural year, the 4-for-44 Relay encourages racers to define their teams on course by wearing team shirts or costumes. Step it up a notch by decorating your team vehicles to match! The after-party at STB will be a guaranteed good time with live music, games, and an ice cold beer (or two!) After all, if you’re going to run that far, you’ve definitely earned a few brews to your name. Each participant will receive a custom finisher medal that doubles as a bottle opener, a tech tee, and an awesome day with friends, family, and co-workers. The 4-for-44 race directors are the same folks who started the EVL Halloween Half & 5K and the Happy Half & 5K - Doug and Gwen Bush. According to Gwen, “The 4-for44 race involves not only running, but strategic planning and a team effort to win! Each team member will run three legs of varied lengths, totaling approximately 9-13 miles each. While one athlete is running, the other teammates drive to the next transfer station to get ready for the hand-off.” The Bush’s have done an excellent job of giving you and your team all the tools you need for success. As some sections of the race are flat and some are hilly, captains will need to use some strategy for running the race. A spreadsheet can be found on the 4-for-44 website under ‘General Info’ to help captains plan their course of action and assign legs to team members. If you’re reading this article before Sept. 10 and would like to enter, I suggest high-tailing it over to the 4-for44 website to register! For more information, visit www.4for44.com, find them on Facebook @evlhalfmarathon, or email info@evlhalf.com. And remember, there’s a beautiful lake, a team that’s counting on you, and beer at the end! BEER!

EVL HALF & 5K

The Copper Twig Gallery SEEING THE FOREST FOR THE TREES

A Photographer with a fascination for trees captures the delicate personalities of nature through her lens By Dash Hegeman

Those truly lucky in life don’t ever have to choose their career. Their career will choose them. Whether she knew it at the time or not, Laura Gooley’s draw towards photography would eventually put her on a path to online sales, art shows, and gallery showings. And it all began in Erie, PA with a blue and yellow Fisher-Price film camera. Laura was drawn to the art of finding unique angles and compositions at an early age, and as she grew, that ability grew with her. “Throughout the years I gravitated towards photography and art classes in both grade school and high school, so naturally I felt I had to pursue this passion,” said Gooley. “I moved down near Pittsburgh to attend Oakbridge Academy of Arts to further my study in Photography.” Two life-highlights came out of Laura’s time at Oakbridge Academy of Arts. The first was an associate degree in photography and the second was a newborn daughter. And just like that, photography went from abstract and mystical to adorable and capturing memories. As time went on, photography began to take a backseat to life and more importantly, to her daughter. “I found myself not looking at things like I used to … not noticing delicate branches in the reflection of windows, or seeing landscapes in the dreamlike way I used to,” Gooley stated. “And that was ok, because she was my main subject in all aspects of life.” However, once an artist, always an artist and Laura eventually found herself working with other like-minded people. She worked in galleries and with other photographers. Eventually she found herself drawn to custom frame making. Then, in 2013, her son was born and suddenly Laura’s photography spark was reignited. “I started looking at everything as potential photographs again,” Gooley said. “So I bought a small point and shoot digital camera, and started playing around with it, even though it was hard at first since my prior experience consisted with film. I quickly decided to upgrade to a professional camera.” It’s easy to think that the switch from film to digital would allow a photographer even more leeway and creative freedom in post production, but with Laura that is not necessarily always the case. “As far as editing, I have this thing where I cannot stand to be in front of a computer for longer than 5-10 minutes,” stated Gooley. “So I keep my editing quick and easy since I already know what I want each picture to express in the end. Many photos - even with the enlarged moon and stars - are done in less then 10 minutes. I don’t overthink it; it’s more of getting the filter just right to match what I see in my mind to make it reality. When I see something that moves me, I really try to take the time to study the angles, look for the best composition and figure out in that moment how I want to express the feeling that I feel in the photo through a filter.” When you check out Laura’s work on Etsy (www.etsy.com/shop/CopperTwigGallery), her Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CopperTwigGallery/), or @thecoppertwig on Instagram, you’ll find a uniquely fun-loving young woman with a very apparent fascination for trees. To hear Laura describe why trees are such a focal point for her showcases one of the many reasons that her mind views the world on a different level than most.

“I honestly have loved trees since I was a child; they have always been something I am drawn to in a way I am not sure I can explain … I find them hauntingly beautiful, mysterious and amazing … each one unique and captivating in their own way.” She also professes to love landscapes, flowers and plants. “But as far as flowers go, I have seen a million photos of them, but I have never seen a personality appear when I look at them. So when I take pictures of flowers, I try to release that beauty from within, and show you that personality.” It’s very easy to see “a million photos” these days with all the different online photo showcasing platforms. When asked if she thought it was harder today to stand out and be seen, Laura responded, “I definitely see the amazing advance in smartphones and how awesome and easy it is to take fantastic photos. I have found it’s actually the opposite as far as being hard to stand out. I believe my photography is super unique since they are scenes that I see in my mind when I look at a landscape, combined with the feeling I feel at that moment.” The Erie, PA landscape has noticeably impacted Laura’s artwork. A city built on the foundations of manufacturing, steel, and coal; Erie has a grit and toughness about it that is very unique. So it isn’t surprising to hear Laura talk about how growing up in Erie gave her a unique perspective on her photography. “I absolutely believe that my surroundings impact the tone within my art. I think that If I lived in California I’m guessing my photos would be more colorful and happier. And it’s not at all that Erie is not a happy place, because it is, just way more towards a gloomy happy than a sunny California happy,” she stated with a laugh. “But I find my darker dreamlike depictions from living here seem to be more accepted. Even my floral photos tend to lean towards ghostly and gloomy.” If you’re looking to see Laura’s work in person, the place to do it in the near future will be at Ellicottville’s Fall Festival this October 7-8. It’s an opportunity to showcase her skills that she is very excited about. “I absolutely believe these shows help me gain exposure, for example last summer I did Discover Presque Isle, which was a 3-day event that went extremely well so I signed up again this year and had a bunch of repeat people from last year, and their friends … that time I did get pretty emotional. I am absolutely humbled by this whole experience …. everyday. Sales from all my shows surpass my expectations each time. Each show I do exposes me to another person and/or organization who invites me to do another show. It’s truly amazing.” Laura doesn’t just specialize in photography. She also has honed her jewelry making skills. In fact, the name of her business, The Copper Twig, is a combination of her love of trees with a metal that she has always been captivated by. Look for The Copper Twig booth at Ellicottville’s Fall Festival and check out what this up-and-coming artist from Erie has to offer. Laura’s art isn’t her full time job … yet. But she has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. With pieces in numerous galleries and a growing list of shows that she is participating in, the future is looking luminous for The Copper Twig.

Look for Laura Gooley’s works locally at this year’s Fall Festival in Ellicottville, October 7-8

If you plan on camping, be sure to plan ahead as families have made this an annual tradition. KINZUA SKY WALK

SPRAGUE’S MAPLE FARM

Before it became the Kinzua Sky Walk, this amazing structure was known as the Kinzua Viaduct, which when first constructed in 1882 was the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world, standing 301 feet tall. Then in 2003, an F1 tornado came through, lifting 11 of the 20 towers from their foundations. Six of the remaining towers were re-invented into what is now recognized worldwide as the Kinzua Sky Walk. It features a set of steel railroad tracks on the skywalk and a partial glass floor on the observation deck. Admission to the Sky Walk is free and open seven days a week from 8am to dusk. Find it via GPS at 296 Viaduct Rd., Mt. Jewett, PA. Come during the weekend of Sept. 1617 for the Kinzua Bridge State Park Fall Festival and enjoy a weekend full of seasonal fun!

W.I.L.M.A. Exposition

‘Tis the Season to #SHOPLOCAL ... Manufacturers, Artisans and Crafters All Under One Roof By Mary Heyl RUSTIC ORIGINALS

BACKWOODS CHAINSAW DESIGNS

MAUDE BELL’S PREPARED HORSERADISH BY FAT ROOT, LLC

Five years ago, Enchanted Mountains, Cattaraugus County’s tourism organization, had an idea! What if there was a way to spotlight local goods, encourage people to spend their money locally, and enjoy one of the most beautiful seasons of the year in Cattaraugus County, all in one event? The W.I.L.M.A. exposition became the answer to that question. Now in its fifth year, W.I.L.M.A. (which stands for ‘We Invite Local Manufacturers and Artisans’) is a two-day event at the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds in Little Valley, October 21-22. Cattaraugus County manufacturers, artisans, and crafters will set up their unique, locally made products - from wreaths to carved sculptures, to horseradish - all for your browsing and #shoplocal pleasure. However, W.I.L.M.A. is more than an acronym, as anyone who has participated in the event knows. According to Cattaraugus County Tourism Web Technician, Jeremy Knab, W.I.L.M.A. also refers to the woolly bear that kicks off the event each year. Since the expo takes place during woolly bear caterpillar season, the event begins with one of the county’s legislators finding a woolly bear (Wilma, the woolly bear) at the fairgrounds and predicting the severity of the coming winter, based on the size of the caterpillar’s reddish middle stripe! W.I.L.M.A. is the perfect opportunity to shop for a distinctive gift for the upcoming holiday season, while keeping your money in the community. Shopping local is more than just avoiding long lines and crammed parking lots at the mall (although this is an added perk!) Buying locally-made products supports business owners and families right in the community, while also creating jobs and encouraging local tourism. Additionally, shopping local reduces transportation costs and lessens the environmental impact of these businesses. Of course, shopping local at the W.I.L.M.A. event is just plain fun, as the variety of items and the personal, friendly service offered by local business owners create an entirely different experience than shopping in a big box store. In the words of Jacqueline Gardner, Cattaraugus County Tourism Assistant, “I like that it gives some of the smaller businesses in Cattaraugus County a time to shine. It’s very cost-effective for the businesses to be there, and they get a lot more special attention than they would at a larger festival. It’s a great family-friendly atmosphere.” Some of the vendors that visitors can expect to see include Marcia’s Toys and Gifts of Little Valley, Wallflowers Designs of Randolph, Milkhouse Country Crafts of East Otto, and Rustic Originals of Salamanca. Jodi Scanlan, owner of Rustic Originals, is excited to take part in W.I.L.M.A. and share her hand-crafted home décor items! What started out as a creative outlet became a business venture in 2015 when Scanlan decided to share her work with others. “I make things to help me relax - I have another business that keeps me very busy. Rustic Originals started as a hobby but has turned into a nice little extra business that I truly enjoy,” explained Scanlan. Scanlan makes country primitive signs, florals, and Christmas ornaments, and she also teams up with other artisans to offer more variety and have more helping hands. Other offerings include Lora Farnham’s homemade soaps, bath products and candles, and Nichole Pennell’s children’s dresses, onesies, and bibs. According to Scanlan, “The most popular items are the signs. People love to stop and read them, and I try to have one to fit most everyone!” Sarah Walker, owner of Backwoods Chainsaw Designs, will be at the W.I.L.M.A. event with a variety of impressive carvings and sculptures. Walker got her start with this unique art form by watching other chainsaw carvers at different fairs and festivals in the area. “At the Franklinville Maple Festival a few years ago, I watched the carver for over an hour; he must have noticed because he struck up a conversation. He told me I had to promise I’d go home and give it a try, so I did,” explained Walker. Walker has now been carving for four years, and she went full time with her business just this past May. When asked what her most unique request was, Walker had a hard time narrowing it down: “It’s hard to choose just one … I love the odd requests customers order. I did a giant two-foot cupcake once, and I’ve also carved a giant Mack truck bulldog out of a 9-foot by 5-foot stump. The list goes on!” In addition to a carving demo by Walker, visitors to W.I.L.M.A. can expect a great variety of smaller seasonal items including pumpkins, trees, owls, bears, and a few surprises. Shop for the foodie in your life (or yourself!) with Fat Root, LLC of Hinsdale. Company founders Steve and Christine Clute, Jeff and Julie Goodyear and Jeff and Sue VanDeCar invite you to enjoy a local tradition that dates back to the 19th century with the Bell family. In the late 1800s, William and Maude Bell married and lived along the tow path of the Genesee Valley Canal just off of Fay Hollow Road in Hinsdale, where they raised their two children. The family grew a variety of vegetables and sold them at the local market, but the most popular item was Maude’s prepared horseradish. Enjoyed by locals in Hinsdale and the nearby city of Olean, Maude’s horseradish became a high-demand local item, and Maude could hardly keep up with the demand. After Maude’s death in 1975, there was no longer a locally grown and processed horseradish in the area. Finally, in 2014, Fat Root, LLC began operations and now grows its own horseradish along the historic Genesee Valley Canal in Hinsdale. Their product, “Maude Bell’s Prepared Horseradish,” will be available at W.I.L.M.A. for visitors to enjoy. W.I.L.M.A. takes place indoors in the 4H building at the fairgrounds, and will run from 10am-5pm on Saturday, Oct. 21 and from 11am3pm on Sunday, Oct. 22. Admission is free! For more information or to become a vendor, visit www.enchantedmountains.com.

Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson to play Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino

“DREAMER” A Conversation with Roger Hodgson

HULICK: We are so excited you are playing the Seneca Allegany Casino on October 7 in Salamanca, NY. Do you have a message for your fans who will be attending? HODGSON: I’m very excited about coming up and playing the Buffalo, New York area again. I have many wonderful memories of that part of the country and I’m happy to be playing the Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino for the first time. Fans are going to be in for a treat. The band has never sounded better and the songs that have been with me for so many years have never sounded better - “Breakfast in America”, “Take the Long Way Home”, and many others. HULICK: Your career as lead singer of the legendary group Supertramp was huge, but you have had a remarkable solo career since you left the group. Did you have any doubts when you made the decision to go it alone, and how do you feel it has turned out? HODGSON: I did not leave Supertramp in order to go it alone. It was really a question of following my heart and trusting that what I was feeling was the correct choice. I knew I had to change my lifestyle … to make raising my kids a priority. It wasn’t just that I left Supertramp; I left the music industry for quite a long period of time, for many years.

.....................

Saturday, October 7 7:00 p.m. By Melanie Hulick Singer/songwriter Roger Hodgson will be “giving more than a little bit” to his fans when he plays one show only on Saturday, October 7 at Seneca Allegany. Hodgson co-founded the band Supertramp with Rick Davies, which released their first album in 1970. Selling over 60 million records during the 14 years his legendary voice and songwriting talents made its undeniable sound in the music industry, the list of hits kept coming … “The Logical Song”, “Breakfast in America”, “Give a Little Bit”, “Take the Long Way Home” and “Dreamer”. I recently caught up with the singer/songwriter and we talked about his leaving the band after 14 years and the reason why … in which he says was a good decision that led to his being in good shape physically and spiritually today as he garners rave reviews as a solo artist. “The way I’m touring is really under my own conditions now,” said Hodgson. “My belief is that I’m in a service industry. Never a day goes by that I do not express gratitude for the privilege and blessings of being able to do what I love for a living and make people happy.”

HULICK: When you made the decision to come back, were you concerned about it at all … with the reaction from not only the industry, but from your fans? HODGSON: I had no idea what would happen to my music career both, in leaving Supertramp, and also in taking the sabbatical I did from the music industry for so many years. It was a huge leap of faith. All I knew is that I had to follow my heart … which was telling me to stop for a while and be present as my children found their formative legs and grew up. I did not know what to expect when I came back to stage again. Initially, it was me alone on a stage putting out feelers to see if people even remembered me … and here I am 16 years later from those formative steps. The happiness from so many people to see me again, to hear me again, and to hear the songs that I’ve written has been overwhelming. I feel like the luckiest man alive. Looking back, it was a good decision. Supertramp had been my life for 14 years and I’m very proud of the legacy that I contributed to and the songs that I gave birth to during that time, many of which I still play today and they still sound as fresh as ever. I think my time away from the music business was very good for me and is one of the reasons that I’m in such good shape physically and spiritually today. People always tell me I’m singing so much better today than I did with Supertramp and I can hear it. It’s not because my voice is better, but I’m better on the inside. HULICK: You started writing songs at the age of 12, after learning guitar, and had your first concert of original music at age 13 all while at boarding school. It’s been said your guitar became your best friend during those days. Had you not gone to boarding school, would you still have pursued music? HODGSON: I inherited my first guitar from my father at the age of 12 when my parents got divorced. Yes, it did become my best friend at boarding school in England, and it was where I went to express the deeper questions and deeper longings of what was happening inside me, as well as the difficulty in finding answers to it all at school. Who knows if I would’ve had the drive or the same dreams that music provided me had I not gone to boarding school? I think so. Certainly the experiences of boarding school gave me a lot to write about, “The Logical Song” being one obvious example. HULICK: An interesting piece of music trivia had you recording your first single, “Mr. Boyd”, with a session band that included pianist Reg Dwight, who became known as Elton John. I hope you have a video or photos of that somewhere. HODGSON: Many people would think I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, having my first recording experience as Argosy at the age of 19 being with a session band that included pianist Reg Dwight, who later became known as Elton John. I remember being pretty awestruck at the level of musicianship that I was suddenly surrounded by and the whole experience. The song “Mr. Boyd” became very close to being a hit in the UK, which would’ve probably changed my destiny because I wouldn’t have met Rick and gone in a different direction with Supertramp. HULICK:The 20th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana just passed at the end of August. You played at the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium per request of Princes William and Harry, which became one of the “goosebump moments” for them as well as the 65,000 attendees, when all stood and sang along with you. What were you feeling at that moment? HODGSON: I always regretted never meeting or playing for Princess Diana because I had so much love and respect and compassion for her and because she was such a fan ... specifically of my songs that I wrote and later recorded with Supertramp. That regret was healed when I had the chance to honor her memory at Wembley Stadium when Princes William and Harry invited me to be a part of the concert honoring their mother. It truly was a goose bump moment for me as well, when the whole of Wembley Stadium stood up to sing “Give A Little Bit” with me … including Princes William and Harry. It was hard for me not to burst into tears. HULICK: What one song title of your songs from the Supertramp catalog, or your solo catalog, best describes the four decades of your career? HODGSON: That’s a difficult question. I would have to maybe say “Dreamer”, as I’m a boy whose dreams really have come true. HULICK: What song title would describe your personal life? HODGSON: I would probably have to say “Only Because Of You”, as I cannot separate my life and musical journey. With my deep longing to understand and know God, “Only Because Of You” represents the inner inspiration and longing that has driven me to write many of the songs that have come through me. HULICK: What’s next for Roger Hodgson? Working on any new projects? HODGSON: One year at a time (chuckles). I have a very busy touring year this year, and again I’m so happy to be playing a handful of select shows in America, and happy that one of them is in Salamanca. I do hope I can get a few of the 60 plus songs that I have burning a hole in my pocket that I have not recorded out there somewhere for fans to hear. Otherwise, now the demand to see me is growing and I’m unable to fulfill all the requests around the world for me to come and play. I expect to stay pretty busy for the foreseeable future … touring and playing my songs for my fans. I am greatly looking forward to seeing our friends and fans in Salamanca on October 7.

TRAIL CENTRAL

THE BEST OF FALL By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau

Get outside and enjoy the spectacular colors of fall while hiking along a Forest Trail, flying overhead in a Vintage Bi-Plane, or from the water as you kayak at Hamlin Lake or Marilla Reservoir. Bike, dance, enjoy a fall festival and sip some cider! The best of fall awaits in the forestlands of the Allegheny National Forest of northwestern Pennsylvania.

Enjoy a quiet hike as summer fades and frost begins to tip the leaves yellow in the Forest.

TOP 5 FALL HIKING TRAILS IN THE FOREST Marilla Bridges Trail is a 1-mile loop trail with brilliant fall foliage and water vistas. Highlights include the wooden Erik Benjamin Covered Bridge which spans the spillway of the Marilla Reservoir, three rustic wooden trestle bridges which cross mountain streams, and a delightful gazebo located at the southwest corner of the trail. This trail is picture perfect for fall photos. The Marilla Reservoir, with its calm waters, is a wonderful spot for kayaking. Roadside parking offers convenient access to both the trail and the water. This trail is family friendly, and it is for non-motorized use only. The trail head is located along Rt. 346, five miles west of the City of Bradford. This trail is rated easy. Distinctive hikes over and into the Kinzua Gorge are located at the Kinzua Bridge State Park. The Kinzua Sky Walk takes you over the Kinzua Gorge. High in the sky, you will experience amazing 360-degree views of the fall foliage from the sky walk’s partial glass overlook. The Kinzua Sky Walk was built upon the historic towers of the Kinzua Viaduct, so tracks run up the middle, and it extends 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge at a height of 224 feet. It is free to hike on the sky walk, and admission is free to the park. The Kinzua Creek Trail is a 0.4-mile (one-way) trail down the side of the gorge. The trail switchbacks along the side of the gorge; at the bottom, you can view the sky walk from below and have a close-up view of the massive fallen towers still laying where the tornado winds placed them. This trail is rated difficult. The Kinzua Bridge State Park is located at 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. The Kinzua Valley Trail is a 7-mile hiking and biking trail perfect for viewing the autumn golds, brilliant reds, deep oranges, and rich yellows, bursting forth during fall, in the forestlands of the Alleghenies. The trail, for a time, winds along the banks of the picturesque Kinzua Creek. The surface of the trail is crushed limestone, and it is family-friendly, with easy access to the trailheads at Westline or Red Bridge Campground. To reach the Westline trailhead, follow PA Rt. 219 north from the intersection of Rt. 6 and Rt. 219 at Lantz Corners. To reach the trailhead at the Red Bridge Campground, travel north from Kane, Pennsylvania on Rt. 321 to the campground located along the edge of the Allegheny Reservoir. Lodging is available at the Westline Inn, and cabins and campsites at Red Bridge Campground may be reserved at www.recreation.gov. This trail is rated moderate in difficulty.

Fall colors reflect in the shimmering surface of the waters of the Marilla Reservoir.

The Kinzua Sky Walk offers amazing views of the fall foliage in the Kinzua Gorge.

The “Grand-Daddy of all trails, the longest trail in the United States,” is the North Country National Scenic Trail. The North Country Trail is the longest, most colorful trail in the Allegheny National Forest. There are 96.3 miles of this trail within the Forest. It is well marked with blue diamonds. The North Country Trail is one of three designated National Scenic Trails in Pennsylvania and provides vistas of the Allegheny Reservoir as it passes through rock outcroppings, open hardwoods, old growth forests and stands of hemlock. A large trailhead, with a parking area, is located along PA Rt. 346, west of the City of Bradford. The trail is a wonderful back-packing experience during the fall, but allow two to three days as this trail is rated difficult. A favorite trail and scenic overlook, Rimrock Overlook and Trail is located along the Longhouse National Scenic Byway, in the Allegheny National Forest. Considered by many as one of the most scenic fall vistas in the Forest, your views from the overlook extend miles across the Allegheny Reservoir. You will see all the fall colors reflected in the shimmering surface of the waters of the Reservoir. From the overlook, the short, 1.3-mile trail features carved stone steps that wind down the mountainous rocks to end up at the colorful shoreline of the Allegheny Reservoir. To drive to this destination from the City of Bradford, travel west on PA 59, make a left-hand turn onto Forest Road 454, and drive 2.7 miles to the parking and picnic area. The difficulty rating is moderate for this trail. Visitors can kayak on the waters of the Allegheny Reservoir, which has a 100-mile plus shoreline. Kayaks may be rented at Willow Bay, on the Reservoir, at 4001 West Washington Street, Bradford, Pennsylvania, or by calling 814-368-4158.

VINTAGE BI-PLANE RIDES FOR VIEWING FALL FOLIAGE The Kinzua Creek Trail winds down the side of the Gorge to the fallen towers.

In the fall, the leaves blush scarlet, and turn brilliant shades of gold, yellow and orange. Imagine viewing this unforgettable tapestry of color, as you soar above the forest, with the wind in your hair, and the sun in your face, riding in an open cockpit airplane.

THE AUTUMN LOCAL ~ SEPTEMBER 2017 ... Page 19 Bring you cowbell to cheer on the Wheel Around the Hub Bicycle Race in Smethport.

Rimrock Overlook & Trail features carved stone steps which take you to the shoreline of the Allegheny Reservoir.

Vintage Bi-Plane Rides allow you to view the magnificent colors of fall from the skies above.

Near the Westline Inn, the Kinzua Valley Trail runs from Westline to the Red Bridge Campground.

Veteran pilot, Bruce Klein offers safe, enjoyable, and memorable rides in his fully restored 1943 Boeing Stearman. Soar above the forestlands of the Allegheny National Forest and the amazing Kinzua Sky Walk. Prime fall viewing times are the last two weeks of September and the first two weeks of October.

Held in and among the forest shaded picnic area, the setting is both relaxing and inviting. Local craft vendors will be showcasing their wares, music will be provided through the day by live musical performances, and a wide variety of food - including the delicious entrees found at Little Sister’s Big Rig - are spectacular.

Vintage Bi-Plane Rides leave from the Bradford Regional Airport, located at 212 Airport Drive, Lewis Run, Pennsylvania. Plenty of free parking; gift certificates are available. To book this unforgettable Vintage Bi-Plane Ride for fall, phone Bruce at 814-642-9486 or 814-558-5376.

A big-foot calling contest is scheduled for 4pm. Visitors to the park will want to tour the newly opened Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center to learn the amazing story at the Kinzua Sky Walk constructed on the towers of the original Kinzua Viaduct. The Kinzua Sky Walk was selected as “One of the top 10 most scenic sky walks in the world” by The Culture Trip. U.K., and in the fall the view of the colors of the forest is amazing.

WHEEL AROUND THE HUB BICYCLE RACE Bring your cowbell! “The Wheel Around the Hub Bicycle Race” will take place Saturday, September 16 from noon-4pm on historic Pennsylvania Route 6 in Smethport, Pennsylvania. The ringing of a cowbell is part of the tradition started in the 1890s during a national bicycling phenomenon when the race was first held in Victorian Smethport. In the era before automobiles, the bicycle was a main means of transportation. Today, participants in the race will enjoy wheeling around the paved roads surrounding Smethport. Races include a 53-mile circuit cycling race, a 15-mile fun run, and a 7-mile youth race. This event benefits the Smethport Fire Department. Registrations may be made online at www.bikereg.com/27819. For those wishing to watch the race or to participate in the race, be sure to come early, or stay late to enjoy the beauty of this Victorian Village. A self-guided walking tour of the Smethport Mansion District takes you through the village and offers photos, a map, and historical highlights of over 32 historic buildings. Walking Tour Brochures may be picked up in front of the courthouse at the outdoor kiosk, or at many local establishments. (Turn to page 21 to learn more about Smethport’s Mansion District.) Two lovely B&B’s, the Mansion District Inn and the Blackberry Inn are both within walking distance of downtown. The PA Wilds Vacation Suites and Executive Rentals also offer warm and welcoming accommodations in downtown Smethport.

KINZUA BRIDGE PARK FALL FESTIVAL One of the signature fall festivals held in the region, the Kinzua Bridge Fall Festival will be held September 16 -17 from 10am-6pm at the Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania.

Location is 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. For additional information please visit www.kinzuabridgefoundation.com, the sponsors of the event.

This annual fundraiser helps support the work of building and maintaining the Kinzua Valley Trail which reaches from Westline to the Red Bridge Campground in the Allegheny National Forest. Homemade entrees and side dishes, desserts made from family recipes, and refreshments will give you the energy to climb the stairs to the music hall and spend the evening dancing. A total of 200 tickets will be sold for the event. Overnight accommodations are available at the Westline Inn, 15 E.L. Smethport - A Charming Victorian Village Self-Guided Walking Tour will Take You on a Journey Back in Time By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau

Explore the amazing architecture of the Smethport Mansion District - brimming with history and charm

Hamlin Lake with fishing, kayaking, and a hiking trail is just minutes from downtown Smethport.

Mansions in Smethport were given as wedding gifts in the early 1900s.

Step lightly or you might rouse the resident ghost at the Old Jail Museum.

Gilded Era Smethport, nestled in the hills along scenic Pennsylvania Route 6, was first surveyed by Dutch land surveyors in 1807, who selected it as northwest Pennsylvania’s most perfect town site. Today, one finds a quaint Victorian village with amazing architecture brimming with history and charm. In the 1880s, several factors propelled Smethport into the forefront of the Pennsylvania Wilds. The combination of massive timber resources, oil reserves, and railroads caused McKean County’s economy to skyrocket in the early 1870s. Vast amounts of money flowed into Smethport, the governmental seat and financial center of the county. By the 1880s, Smethport’s Mansion District was in full construction. Take your time to explore. Breath in the fresh country air and allow yourself to experience the small-town charms of Smethport, including Hamlin Lake which is just a short walking distance from downtown. The Smethport Mansion District Walking Tour highlights the rich Victorian architecture of many of the homes. With mapping and photos, the brochure guides you past 34 historic structures, along with offering you fun facts about Smethport. For example, the first automated bowling pin setter was invented in Smethport, as was Wooly Willy, a popular children’s magnetic toy. The walking tour is self-guided and visitors may pick up the brochure at the kiosk in front of the McKean County Courthouse located at 500 W. Main Street in Smethport. As you stroll, see if you can identify the Mansions which were built as wedding gifts. One of the wedding mansions is the Orlo J. Hamlin Mansion, a superb example of Victorian Queen Anne architecture, located at 911 W. Main Street. This mansion was completed in 1902 as a wedding gift for Henry Hamlin’s son. The Bucktail Regiment - the famous Civil War unit of sharpshooters - was mustered in April 1861 on the steps of the McKean County Courthouse. A Grand Army of the Republic Monument on the courthouse lawn was designed and erected in 1886 by St. Johnsbury Granite Company of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, to pay tribute to this historic event. Step back in time with a visit to the Old Jail Museum, rated as one of Pennsylvania’s sixth most haunted places by Pursuits Magazine! Be sure to step lightly or you might rouse the resident ghost who is said to haunt the downstairs dungeon. The Old Jail Museum, which was the original jailhouse, is located at 502 West King Street. Visit the dungeon, explore the displays, shop their general store, or conduct genealogical research in the record room. Museum hours are April, May, Sept. and Oct., Tuesday-Thursday 1-4pm; and during June, July

and August, hours are Monday-Friday 1-4pm. A series of special events are held throughout the year, so be sure to check the McKean County Historical Society’s Facebook site for event listings. For information or to schedule a special group tour, phone 814-887-5142. Hamlin Lake Park is a free public access recreation center which offers fishing, boating, and kayaking. Goosechaser Trail is a 3/4-mile trail which loops along the banks of Marvin Creek in Hamlin Lake Park. It is named for the Canadian geese which frequent the lake. The trail skirts the habitats of many wetland creatures including water fowl. American Bald Eagles are often sighted at Hamlin Lake. Nearby is the 1-mile Shawmut Trail which follows along Marvin Creek to the historic McKean County Poor Farm. Enjoy exploring the shops along Main Street. The Rose Boutique features many locally crafted treasures. A sample of gift items offered for sale include beautiful hand-painted glass lamps, hand-knitted baby clothes, soft blankets, handcrafted wreaths and painted shutters. The shop is located at 111 West Main Street and is open Tuesday-Friday 11am-5pm, and Saturday 11am-4pm. For additional information phone 814-887-2720. Enjoy a great meal in a casual atmosphere at the Corner Bistro & Pizza. Co. which serves both lunch and dinner. This family owned restaurant offers a wide selection of American and Italian entrees including Chicken Parmigiana, a Seafood Platter, Bistro Steak Tenderloin with Shrimp, and their New York Style Thin Crust Pizza. Located at 437 West Main Street, they are open seven days a week, phone 814-887-7755. If you desire to try out the fishing at Hamlin Lake, explore the water trails by kayak, visit the amazing Kinzua Sky Walk, or one of the many nearby attractions in the Allegheny National Forest. You have a variety of lodging choices. Smethport has two charming B&B’s, along with short term and extended stay at the Pennsylvania Wilds Executive Suites-Hamlin Lake Haus and the Sherriff Sartwell Mansion. Both the Blackberry Inn (located at 820 West Main Street) and the Mansion District Inn (located at 905 West Main Street) are within walking distance of downtown. Each of these charming B&B’s are beautifully restored mansions, now offering public lodging with a distinctive flair. For reservations at the Blackberry Inn phone 612-940-4014, and for the Mansion District Inn phone 814-598-7403. The Hamlin Lake Haus along the shoreline of Hamlin Lake at 401 W. Water Street, and the Sheriff Sartwell Mansion across from the courthouse at 412 West King Street, can be reserved by calling 814-887-5107.

Lodging choices, shops, restaurants, and a full list of nearby attractions, as well as a downloadable copy of the

This year’s regatta is offering a shorter route (5.1 miles), starting at Farwell Road with the same end location. Registration information: Although mail-in registrations are still acceptable, event organizers have increased the cost of them to encourage everyone to register online. Go paperless and register at www.fallregatta.com or call 716-557-8716 for more information.
