WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE OUR MOVE TO: By Spencer Timkey Beauty is subjective. Art, in all of its forms, is subjective. We define them through the prism of our experiences and our tastes and our glimpse into the world around us. Preconceived notions play a hand in our interpretation of beauty and our definition of art. This is why we are flawed. But there are those amongst us that cast society’s defining rules aside and see the beauty in everything. Elisa Hughey, taken too soon by cancer on June 15, 2016, was such a person. To say she was a lover of the arts would be an insult. Elisa was a lover of the world’s grandeur. An endlessly creative mind coupled with high-end talent made her life a tour de force of artistic innovation. She was an ardent supporter of art and all that goes with it, which is why those whom held her dearest created the Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship for the Arts.

Although Elizabeth Lowes didn’t know the magnitude of Elisa’s artistic prowess, she did know how swift a runner she was. Helping Lowes to train for the 2013 Boston Marathon and then running it with her in 2014, she said that the development of the scholarship helped when everyone came at it from a different perspective. “I think it speaks volumes that she could interact and identify with so many different types of people,” she said. “That’s why it’s so great that we could develop these scholarships that focus on the fine arts. After she passed, a bunch of us got together and just went running. For me, surrounded by the people that she impacted, that meant a lot.” Elisa may have had a loving soul and an artist’s touch, but when she got sick, she turned into a fighter. Dodici didn’t realize how strong of a person she was until she saw her best friend run the Boston Marathon and go back to intensified chemotherapy just two days later. “So few people know that, but that describes her. Tough from head to toe. That is my fondest and most important memory of her, when we crossed that finish line together. She had an art focus, but that didn’t stop her from helping those around her and being a constant source of inspiration. She helped people be the best they could be.” The website, www.elisahugheyscholarship.com, contains all of the information you need to learn more or help out. Students are encouraged to send the completed application form, a statement, and a recommendation from a current or former art instructor. To compliment Elisa’s spirit, a memorial “Fun Run” (open to all) is being planned for June 10 in Ellicottville, which will help raise additional funds for the scholarship.

A graduate of West Valley High School, Elisa would go on to receive her Bachelors from Alfred University, Masters in Art Education from Buffalo State, and finally a Masters in Fine Art from the University of Buffalo. She began teaching art at school before realizing she didn’t fit that mold.

The scholarship aims to help propel students interested in art to higher education. Since Elisa attended West Valley and her children attend Ellicottville, two separate $500 scholarships will be given. She was also an avid runner, and the committee is organizing a fun run in June to raise money.

“She had this way about her, where she was so accepting of everyone and everything,” said Beverly Dodici, Elisa’s best friend since childhood. “It could have been a caterpillar walking across a branch or a leaf on a tree or a Van Gogh - she saw this beauty in everything that not a lot of others did. That’s what made her such a special person and talented artist.”

“That never fulfilled her,” Dodici said. “She almost felt confined by that … the hours, lifestyle. The passion for art and to not be afraid of what’s within and embrace it showed the type of person she was. I remember she did her Masters Thesis and they were these wax molds of rats. It was something so unique and bizarre but she made it beautiful.”

Bicycle Season is Here!

Ellicottville is a great hub for mountain biking and scenic road biking, and with so many riding trails and race series popping up all over the surrounding areas, it’s no wonder the sport is growing in popularity By Greg Culver

@evillebikeandbean

@evillebikeandbean

Bicycles have been a subject of design and development since the early 1800’s. By the start of the 20th century bicycles were a common mode of transportation around the world. Once considered “toys for children,” bicycles have seen many gyrations in popularity in the United States. One of the first examples of bicycles modified specifically for off-road use is the expedition of Buffalo Soldiers from Missoula, Montana to Yellowstone in August 1896. By the late 1970’s to early 1980’s mountain bikes were being produced and ridden in the hills of, where else? California. These days, mountain bike trails can be found all over the U.S. and beyond. On a local level, it is why twenty-five years ago, a club was formed to support trail advocacy and building in this area. The Western New York Mountain Bicycle Association (WNYMBA) is responsible for not only the construction and maintenance of trails, but also working with government groups and landowners to gain access to build such trails. Because of their hard work and dedicated volunteers, there are many places to ride your bike in our neck of the woods. Ellicottville alone features some of the best trails around. The McCarty State Forest is home to over 35 miles of fun, challenging and scenic single track. Those looking for an easier start can drive to the top of the access road or take advantage of the new flow trail at Holiday Valley. Access is also available through additional trails at both Holiday Valley and HoliMont. These trails - in the forest and surrounding areas met the specifications to be considered an IMBA Epic Trail System. IMBA (International Mountain Bicycle Association) is the world authority on single track advocacy and trail building. WNYMBA has recently become a chapter of IMBA and has benefitted from their programs and training. Score! But enough history … mountain biking is just plain fun and is growing in popularity. I think biking in general has become a more attractive recreation due to the ease of use. Once you make the initial investment, the world is your playground. And a must-ride destination - you guessed it - Ellicottville. One guy who’s been riding both roads and trails around EVL for years, is Bike and Bean owner Dennis Baldwin. Dennis has traveled the states riding and racing and has a reputation of being one of the fastest local guys on two wheels. Once the weather turns warmer and the trails dry out, Dennis gears up to lead group rides out of his downtown Ellicottville shop. “I feel pretty fortunate to have grown up and live in Ellicottville,” said Dennis. “When I was 13 and in love with riding my bike the only singletrack we had was the FLT aka “The White Trail”. Now we have around 35 miles of linked singletrack in the State Forest and Holiday Valley with more trails on the way! Rumor has it that HoliMont may be adding some mountain bike trails this summer too.” “It’s awesome that Ellicottville has become the hub for Western New York cycling,” Dennis continued. “With smaller areas developing within a 30-60 minute drive, Ellicottville has become a great destination town for cycling. A HUGE thank you to WNYMBA. They are a big reason we have these trails. Become a member @ wnymba.org. Not just for mountain bikes; we also have some great road riding! Big shoulders on the main roads, great scenery on the country roads, nice hills and Allegany State Park is just south of here. Swing by Bike and Bean to get dialed in on the best places to ride.” WNYMBA produces maps for the local trail systems it builds and maintains. These maps are on sale in local shops (including Bike and Bean) with all proceeds going to trail advocacy, building and maintenance. The club organizes group rides at other area trail systems as well - find information and locations at wnymba.org. Group rides are a great social activity that help you get to know the trails, other riders and learn important tips. What makes group rides even better … most rides are followed by the ritual of sharing stories and bike talk, which are almost always washed down with beer. And with so many great choices for beer (and oh yea, food is important too), Ellicottville is a great option for group rides and after-ride meals.

Many ski area towns have embraced biking and the demographic it attracts. Bike riders are often the same folks you’ll see on the slopes during the winter months. For me, bike riding puts me in the same type of zone as making sweet carved turns on a crisp and quiet January morning. Once in the “groove” the feeling of traveling over rocks, roots and dirt becomes second nature. The thrill of speed along with the physical demands make biking a great activity for those in search of a new adventure pastime. Another fun, but often overlooked system, is the Golden Hill State Forest. Golden Hill is a 15-20 minute drive from EVL and sports easier trails for novice riders, as well as a black diamond loop named The Whammy. If you’re up for a challenge, there are plenty of opportunities to race your bike as well. From beginners to experts, there is a race for everyone. Racing is a great way to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, which in turn is guaranteed to lead to faster, more confident riding. There are local opportunities to race road, trails, gravel and cyclocross. Let’s break it down: • The Finger Lakes Gravel series is a 3-race series where you can test your skills on gravel, dirt, paved and seasonal forest roads. Each race is just over 30 miles and climbs an average of 3,200 feet per race. • Once May kicks in, the Wednesday Night Series starts at Sprague Brook Park. The eightweek series is an awesome family event with riders ranging from age 4 to 74. Sprague Brook Park is another WNYMBA trail system built in an Erie County Park, and the only park in the county that offers camping for tents and RV’s. • Later in the summer, Heartrateup.com runs two of the oldest races in the area. First is the Raccoon Rally at Allegany State Park, Salamanca, NY. The Rally is a weekend-long event with a challenging road race on Saturday and mountain bike race on Sunday. Yes, there are a few twisted individuals that do both, but most choose one. ASP has plenty of camping and isn’t far from downtown Ellicottville. • In July, Heartrateup sets the course for the 6 Hours of Power (6HOP) at Holiday Valley. The 6HOP is a relay style race for teams, duos and solos. If you can survive the climb to the top, the rest of the lap is a combination of classic single track that finishes on the bermturn descent on the new Senear Valley Trail. Six hour races are a true test of physical and mental toughness and are comparable to hitting yourself in the head with a hammer … it feels so good when you stop. Ellicottville is also a great hub for scenic road biking. The rolling country hills are a challenging and refreshing change from the concrete jungle of a city. Pad your Strava stats with some of the prettiest miles in the area. Once the weather starts tuning cold and leaves begin to change, cyclocross race season kicks in. Cyclocross combines the stamina of road riding with handling and terrain similar to mountain biking. Picture a steeple chase on bikes; riders dismount throughout the race to leap over obstacles. Cyclocross has been punishing riders since as early as 1912. HoliMont held its first ever race last fall and had over 100 registered riders. The course was a mix of mud, technical off-camber sections and climbs that made even the strongest legs whine. The cool thing about CX racing is it’s as much fun for the spectators as it is for the racers. Onlookers can cheer, heckle and offer gifts to passing racers … it can be quite the circus! If you’re looking for a mellower bike cruise, check out the Pat McGee Trail. This railsto-trails system is a great way to ride and relax on a sunny day. There are 5 trail heads for easy access. More information can be found at enchantedmountains.com/trails/patmcgee-trail. Western New York has a plethora of bicycle riding opportunities, and Ellicottville is right in the center of all the action. Plan a trip to EVL for the day, a weekend, or longer, and find out how much fun bike riding can be!

Women’s Weekend ... Reinvented ELLICOTTVILLE BRINGS BACK AN OLD FAVORITE

Gather your girlfriends and mark June 2-3 on your calendars for a well-deserved, rejuvenating weekend of fun By Brenda Perks

@Nature’s Remedy

@laurasollyyoga

Show me a mom who doesn’t need a little “girl time” every now and then, and I’ll show you a toddler who enjoys cleaning his room and eating his vegetables at every meal. My point exactly. Whether you’re a mother, a girlfriend, married, single, a sister, an aunt, a grandma, or just a girl who likes to have fun and unwind with her gal pals on occasion, there’s a weekend in Ellicottville dedicated to you. We call it: Women’s Weekend. We’re not saying you should leave the men and boys in your life at home (although if you want to, it is totally justifiable). If you do decide to drag them along, there are plenty of options here that will keep them busy and entertained while you’re off doing your thing - all the more reason to pack up the entire family and come out for a fun weekend June 2-3, 2017. And for those moms who want to introduce something really cool to their daughters, this may be the perfect opportunity to grow, learn, and bond with your little (or not-so-little) girl. Don’t forget to add Grandma to the list because she - possibly more than anyone else - deserves this getaway and will most certainly appreciate the invitation. If Women’s Weekend sounds familiar, it’s because it isn’t a new event for Ellicottville … rather, a reinvented one. Women’s Weekend had a good run starting in 2007 and offered a plethora of fun and invigorating activities for women of all ages. Following a timely hiatus (Women’s Weekend’s last appearance was in 2011), the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce is excited to reinstate the event, this time with even more enthusiasm. The return of Women’s Weekend replaces last year’s inaugural Ellicottville Outdoor Expo … “My staff and I are always striving to improve our events and we felt that bringing back a Women’s Weekend event would be more all-inclusive to our membership,” replied Brian McFadden, Executive Director of the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, when asked about the return of Women’s Weekend and the committee’s decision to replace the Outdoor Expo with it. “We will still include outdoor adventure, but that will not be the entire focus. Instead, many different businesses in the village and town will now be able to participate.” Indeed, outdoor adventure is definitely a big draw for Ellicottville, which has successfully built itself up as a four season destination as a result. And although paddleboards, bicycles and hiking trails will still be popular activities available during Women’s Weekend, now you’ll be able to add in some yoga, naturopathic education, fashion workshops, shopping incentives, and even a mixology class to your bag of weekend entertainment. Thirsty anyone? So while the guys are getting in 18 holes at Holiday Valley’s Double Black Diamond golf course or fishing nearby creeks and streams, here is a list of just a few of the fun girlie activities that Women’s Weekend will cater to … Welcome Reception: No retreat would be complete without a welcome party! A special

@visitellicottville

reception Friday night at the EllicottVillas will invite participants of Women’s Weekend to mingle, pick up their registration packets and goodie bags, and have the opportunity to review and meet the instructors of all the activities/classes being offered. Yoga: Laura Solly, owner of Laura Solly Yoga and Daff Drygoods, was a member of the original Women’s Weekend committee during its previous 5-year run. “The Women’s Weekend theme is a natural fit here in Ellicottville,” she said. “We have so many womenowned, run, and created businesses in this town that deserve to be celebrated, especially as women’s rights and activism are at the forefront of politics and social activism now more than ever. We all love to come here and shop, eat, laugh, drink wine, talk, and be healthy with our spas, yoga, hiking, etc. Women’s Weekend in Ellicottville is the perfect opportunity for all of that.” Laura will be teaching Hatha Yoga classes including meditation and breath work along with some partner poses. At Daff, Laura and her staff are already putting together plans to decorate the store festively and invitingly for women, and they’ll be offering an in-store special for shoppers as well. Essential Oils: Nature’s Remedy will offer workshops on Essential Oils and the many different benefits, applications for daily use, fun questionnaires that participants can fill out to asses which oils will be most beneficial for them, inhalation sampling, and the opportunity to “make and take” your own essential oil. Kristina Barlow, Ellicottville native and Naturopathic Doctor for Nature’s Remedy, is excited to share her wealth of essential oils education with other women during Women’s Weekend. “I never attended any of the Women’s Weekend events when Ellicottville used to have them; I always lived away,” she said. “One of the reasons I came back to Ellicottville was to be part of a community where people know and care about each other. I’m excited that this event is returning, and even more excited that I can be involved.” Scarf Tying: Ava Grace Fashion’s scarf tying videos on Facebook have opened up the door to new and different ways to wear scarves. Owner Jessica Maynard will offer scarf tying sessions at her store (located next to Katy’s Cafe). “It’s going to be a fun hands-on event and each person will get to leave with a new scarf at the end of our workshop,” she said. For those who already wear and love scarves, this will be a chance to pick up new ideas or share their tips with others in the group. And for those who say they don’t wear scarves or have no clue what to do with them, no worries! According to Jess, “This will be a fun crash course in adding a bit of color and style to any outfit using scarves.” When the day is exhausted and you’re ready to kick back and relax, there’s no better way to wind down than on a poolside chaise lounge where the cocktail waitress will happily bring you a fresh strawberry daiquiri or classic margarita. (This is where you can meet back up with your other half, who has most likely lost his fair share of golf balls by this point.) Holiday Valley’s pool complex will be open, the Cabana Bar will be serving up all sorts of tropical treats, and you’ll be glad you took the time to venture with your girlfriends (or family) to beautiful Ellicottville, New York for Women’s Weekend 2017. Details including required pre-registration, fees, activities schedule and more can be found at ellicottvilleny.com.

These guys have built up a reputation of working around the clock all season long to keep the vibe alive on the hill. And as a way of showing much appreciation for showing up when Mother Nature didn’t, Villaggio Restaurant hosted a special evening complete with live music, raffle prizes and food donated by many local businesses, plenty of fun, and much thanks. Here’s to the crews of both Holiday Valley and HoliMont, that have dedicated themselves winter upon winter, to making sure the snow sticks ... Cheers!

RAISE A GLASS ... AND NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR YOUR ART CANVAS-N-COCKTAILS PROVES THAT ART CLASS ISN’T JUST FOR KIDS By Dash Hegeman The concept of “art” is, in and of itself, very subjective. From abstract, to performance, to ceramic and everything else in-between, there is no shortage of mediums that can be considered art. The true skill of an artist isn’t so much a steady hand or an interpretive mindset. It is the ability to unleash beauty and inspiration in the world around them. Not everyone believes that they have that type of artistic ability. But Rebecca Szpaicher would politely disagree with them. And having been involved in art education for the past thirty-two years, she has definitely earned an opinion in the matter. While residing in Ellicottville, Rebecca has taught art in the Little Valley, Franklinville, and most recently Springville school districts - where she has been for thirty years. Her preferred form of artistic expression is ceramics and jewelry, but like any good artist, she appreciates all aspects of art. She enjoys Western New York because of the seasonality of the area, which tends to directly influence her paintings. Like many children, Rebecca was first introduced to the world of art when she was in school, and her high school art teacher ended up being a huge source of inspiration to her. While a strong art curriculum should be a foundation of every child’s life, art is not just for the kids. In fact, in adults the creation of art has been linked to a reduction in the overall level of stress in one’s life, an increase in the creative thinking process, the boosting of self-esteem, and has even been proven to ease the burden of certain chronic health conditions. When you look at the potential benefits of allowing yourself to indulge in the arts, it almost makes no sense not to! For those reasons, and many others, Rebecca started up Canvas-N-Cocktails events where a night out with a nice glass of wine goes hand-in-hand with discovering your inner Picasso. She came up with the idea for the classes after a friend of hers went to a similar class in San Diego and, knowing that Rebecca would love the concept, told her about the great time that she had. After that, Rebecca’s daughter treated her to a local painting class as a Mother’s Day gift. Soon thereafter, Rebecca decided to embark on Canvas-N-Cocktails. She held her first class in November of 2015 with eight of her close friends, who all naturally had a phenomenal time. Canvas-N-Cocktail class sizes can reach upwards of 40 people, but Rebecca says that she tries to make all of her paint classes more intimate and personal. Obviously the goal is for people to enjoy themselves and learn new skills. Smaller class sizes make those things easier to do. “I am very observant as to what appeals to people at the present time and draw from that factor,” states Szpaicher. Rebecca regularly hosts Canvas-N-Cocktails workshops locally in Ellicottville, Great Valley, Salamanca, Little Valley, Springville and Gowanda, and will be adding classes in the Bemus Point area throughout June, July and August at the Ellicottville Brewing Company-Chautauqua and the Hadley House. Search for CanvasN-Cocktails on Facebook for a full schedule of classes, or call 716-560-7489 for more information. You can also find information about her classes at holidayvalley. com and ellicottvilleny.com. According to Rebecca, the most rewarding thing about her experience with Canvas-N-Cocktails is “starting with twenty blank canvases and in less than two hours witnessing twenty masterpieces …. all different.” And to those who think they don’t have an ounce of artistic ability in them, Rebecca encourages them to come give one of her classes a try. In her experience, people often surprise themselves. She also offers these words of encouragement, which she states is the best advice regarding art she has ever received: “Never apologize for your art!”

ELL I C O T T V ILLE HIS TORI CAL MUSEUM 2017: CELEBRATI N G TH E P I O N EERS By Mary Heyl

photos courtesy Ellicottville Historical Society

2017 promises to be an exciting year for the Ellicottville Historical Society & Museum (EHSM), as several historic anniversaries will be celebrated, including the 200th anniversary of the village’s first frame house and the 180th anniversary of the incorporation of the village of Ellicottville. Each year, the EHSM embraces a new theme, and President Dawn Westfall invites visitors to explore this year’s appropriate pioneer theme that celebrates Ellicottville’s earliest settlers whose influence you just can’t help but notice throughout the village. 200 years ago, the future site of the village of Ellicottville was chosen to be the county seat. During this time, the land that would be the village was owned by the Holland Land Company, which owned over three million acres of land west of the Genesee River. The village of Ellicottville was named for Joseph Ellicott, who was in charge of the survey of the Holland Land Company lands in Western New York. Traces of the Holland Land Company’s influence can still be seen today, as the company, which opened an office in Ellicottville in 1818, laid out the village, including the lots, street, and village square, to allow for the expansion of the village - something that wasn’t often planned for in the early years of most villages. Lots were designated to the county for the Courthouse and Clerk’s office, the school district, and a church, where St. John’s Episcopal Church now stands. In fact, the influence of the Holland Land Company played a key part in the construction of the village’s first frame house, which still stands at 8 West Washington Street. Baker Leonard was contracted by the company to build an inn to accommodate prospective land purchasers traveling through the area. Leonard’s large frame house was constructed in the federal style, which was popular in the United States between 1780 and 1830. Marked by plain surfaces, symmetry, and a neoclassical look, federal-style architecture purposefully associated the early American republic with the ancient democracies of Greece and the republican system of Rome. The smooth clapboards of Leonard’s building were perfectly suited to this particular style of architecture; however, it was this feature of the house that caused it to be rejected by the Holland Land Company! The planed lumber used in construction had to be transported from a saw mill eleven miles away in Kill Buck. Unlike today, this was no short trip on smooth roads, but a harrowing journey across a primitive trail of fallen trees, swamps, rough ground and no bridges. This made the lumber quite expensive; the Holland Land Company refused to accept the building, as it turned out to be far more costly than they originally budgeted. Instead, Leonard and his family lived in the beautiful home, which he also operated as a tavern and trading post. Before the County Courthouse was completed in the Village Square, the house was used for County Board of Supervisors meetings, and court was held there from 1818 to 1820. The first town meeting took place there in March of 1821. In later years, Leonard’s building served as the village’s post office and store, and it witnessed a few notable “firsts” in Ellicottville including the first wedding and the first male death in the village. The house has stayed in the same family line since its construction in 1817 and it is now a privately owned residence. Interestingly, Ellicottville’s current mayor, John Burrell, is a descendant of the home’s original owners! In 1837, the village of Ellicottville was incorporated, and it remained the county seat until 1868 when it was moved to the village of Little Valley, which had become an important rail station on the Erie Railroad. Over the years, many more significant historical events took place in Ellicottville, which the EHSM will be celebrating this year. 2017 is the 140th

anniversary of the first locomotive, the “Salamanca,” to arrive in the village (1877) and the 130th anniversary of the construction of the brick schoolhouse (1887). Ninety years ago, the new brick building was constructed for the Ellicottville bank (1927) and 60 years ago, Mayor Burrell, was confirmed at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Westfall explained that each year, the EHSM hosts a volunteer appreciation event, and this year’s event will be centered around the first frame house and St. John’s Episcopal Church next door, which was the first Episcopalian church built in Cattaraugus County. The event takes place every year in September to honor members and volunteers who make the EHSM’s mission their mission year ‘round. Past themes have included a 1950s ice cream social in 2015 and a 1920s flapper theme in 2016, complete with cocktails provided by the Ellicottville Brewing Company. Every two years, the museum has new temporary displays for visitors to enjoy. “Last year, displays were revamped to tell the story of the town and village following more of a historical timeline,” Westfall explained. She encourages visitors to explore the audio tour made possible through the Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism. While visiting the museum, visitors can dial 716-246-1999 and enter the exhibit numbers associated with the museum, followed by the pound (#) key to hear each of the eight series currently available. Visitors can also use a smart phone to scan a QR code available at each of those displays in the museum. According to Westfall, there are many ways for individuals to get involved with the EHSM. The historical society is one of the few local ones that continues to host a monthly lecture series, which the public is invited to attend. These lectures on a variety of topics take place at 7pm on the second Wednesday of the month from May through October at the Ellicottville Memorial Library on Maples Road. To see the lecture series schedule, visit the “Ellicottville Historical Society” Facebook page or contact Dawn Westfall at 716-699-6201. Of course, individuals are encouraged to visit the museum to get the full experience of the EHSM. The museum reopens for the season on Saturday, June 3. Normal hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm-4pm, although it is open for additional hours beginning at 10am during village festival weekends. The last day of the season is Saturday, Sept. 30. In addition to exploring the museum’s exhibits, visitors can also access historical information in the archives with the assistance of Mary Elizabeth Dunbar, who is the town and village historian and coordinator of the museum volunteer schedule. “We are always seeking help with museum tasks and events! It is only successful with the help of many individuals who are willing to help fulfill EHSM’s goals of seeking to inform, inspire, collect and connect to local history,” said Westfall. No experience is necessary, and Dunbar works hard to accommodate individuals’ schedules so that the museum can be open on weekends. Volunteering is rewarding in more ways than one, as Westfall explained: “Many who think they know a lot about the local history find themselves learning something new every day by being more involved with the society and museum’s activities.” Those interested in volunteering can contact Mary Elizabeth Dunbar at 716-699-2162. For more information about the EHSM, call Westfall at 716-699-6201. Stay up-to-date on EHSM events and lectures by following them on Facebook by searching “Ellicottville Historical Society.”

GOWANDA’S HOLLYWOOD HAPPENING FRIDAY-SUNDAY, JUNE 2 -4 MAIN STREET, VILLAGE OF GOWANDA www.gowandahollywoodhappening.com

Join in on one of the largest 3-day motorcycle events in the area! The 19th annual Hollywood Happening has plenty of live bands, motorcycle related vendors and fun! The biggest highlight: this yearly event raises money for the restoration of Gowanda’s historic Hollywood Theater. The history: Industrialist Richard Wilhelm built the Hollywood Theater in 1926 after a devastating fire in 1924 destroyed the original opera house along with many of the buildings along West Main Street in Gowanda. Since the Hollywood first opened, generations of patrons had passed through her beautiful brass and glass doors to enjoy countless movies, live stage shows and concerts. However, time took her toll on the theater and, as did many small community theaters, she closed her doors to the public in 1992. Fortunately, although closed, she was not forgotten. In the mid-1990’s a grassroots organization began to form with the purpose of restoring the New York State and National Historic registered theater to its original 1926 condition. The theater was purchased by The Gernatt Family of Companies in the mid-1990’s and donated to the Gowanda Area Redevelopment Corporation (GARC) and its future was turned over to a handful of volunteers to start the restoration efforts. After many brainstorming sessions discussing fundraising possibilities, one idea emerged that would ultimately become The Hollywood Happening. Now, every spring, thousands of people travel to Gowanda to look at the rows of motorcycles that line the closed main street, enjoy the music and the food and celebrate the beginning of bike season in Western New York. It’s an event with no gate fee. The three-day event includes a number of attractions, such as the Bike Parade that leaves the Gowanda Harley Davidson dealership on Friday night and ends in town for the opening ceremonies. A tattoo contest, Ride-in Bike show and the Hollywood Happening Charity Ride are just some of the other attractions that can be enjoyed over the weekend. Enthusiasts can partake in a number of food and product vendors on-site, or simply sit back and listen to the live bands that will play throughout the weekend. Find a complete schedule of activities on the website.

HINSDALE HORSERADISH FESTIVAL SATURDAY, JUNE

3

HINSDALE MEMORIAL PARK | 1552 GILE HOLLOW ROAD, HINSDALE, NY Search “Hinsdale Horseradish Festival” on Facebook Not only will you find everything horseradish, you’ll find vendors with wine, craft beer, pottery, handmade jewelry, furniture, handmade soaps, country crafts, candles, paintings and more! The festival will be held at the Hinsdale Memorial Park, ideally located only one-half mile south of I-86, directly off of Route 16. It’s an easy drive from anywhere in western NY or northern PA! Live music by Diggin Roots Band from 1:30-4:30pm, and Nick Kody and the Creek Road Band from 5:30-8:00pm. For those unfamiliar with the festival, you may ask “Why a Horseradish Festival? Why Hinsdale?” Well, Cuba has their Garlic Festival, Franklinville has their Maple Festival, Bradford has their Stink Fest and Olean - well there is always something going on in Olean (except for that 1st weekend in June) … and thus, the opportunity for Hinsdale to be remembered for something. Besides, in the early 1900’s, horseradish really was a “hot commodity” in Hinsdale. Maude Bell and her family grew horseradish along the banks of the Ischua Creek in Hinsdale and hauled it by horse and buggy to the market in Olean.

The Hinsdale House: Enter at Your Own Risk

A Rich, Haunting History drives one family out and a researcher in. You, too, can Experience the Paranormal. By Spencer Timkey

Paranormal investigator Daniel Klaes brings in teams from all over the world to help uncover the truth

www.hauntedhinsdalehouse.com

It has everything you would want for a haunted house. Overgrown, unkempt weeds creep towards boarded windows and peeled, sun-stained siding. Branches from a nearby tree hang overhead and whip back and forth from the wind. The interior looks like something out of, well, a horror film. Creaky floorboards make you second guess if you’re the only person in the house; any sound that breaks the eerie silence makes the already unnerving experience that much more so. Enter the Hinsdale House at your own risk. If you believe in the paranormal, you might just be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a fleeting shadow. If you don’t, the house just might make you a believer. A 2015 Pew Research poll found that 18% of Americans have claimed to see a ghost, and 2016 saw a startling rise in the number of exorcisms performed. There is a rich, haunting history associated with the Hinsdale, or Dandy, House. In July of 1973, the Dandy family moved into the remote homestead. But instead of living the American Dream, the Dandys began living an American Haunting. Objects flying through rooms, lights turning on and off, visions of demons - all of this manifested into an unsuccessful attempt at an exorcism from Father Alphonus, a priest from nearby St. Bonaventure University. The Dandys would leave the house behind, but not without the horrifying experience of a haunted house.

could start the other work, we had to do that first.” A North Tonawanda native, Klaes works with a team of paranormal investigators that have helped him get the house back up and running. A contingent of local people also have lent hands - when the roof needed to be torn off, close to 60 people showed up. There is an interest to this place; a curiosity to the fact so much paranormal activity has gone down. Since Klaes took over, the Hinsdale House has become an international hotbed for paranormal investigators. Crews from Canada, Australia, Europe and all over the United States have come to try their hand at uncovering the secrets that haunted the Dandys. To raise awareness, Klaes travels to different paranormal conferences and speaks on it. One of the main draws is that everyone’s data and research is compiled into a massive file Klaes keeps. “To really uncover something of this magnitude, you can’t just go stay overnight in the house and have all the answers,” he said. “So we’re having all of the teams log their findings so we can uncover more history, make correlations and keep connecting the dots. We recently found out that there was a second exorcism, and the man now lives in Alabama. So something is there … we just need to keep digging.”

Since then, and the publication of Clara Miller-Dandy’s book Echoes of a Haunting, paranormal investigators have been transfixed by the home in rural Western New York. The ghost hunting show Paranormal Lockdown filmed there, and that episode remains one of the most intensifying.

Klaes also runs Para Expeditions, which gives people the opportunity to come and stay overnight at the house. It’s geared for a variety - those who have never done a paranormal investigation all the way to someone who may have done 100. He teaches participants about grounding, what to expect, and how they should react if something strange were to happen.

In 2011, paranormal researcher Daniel Klaes went to the house with a team to investigate. His curiosity led him to want to research further, and somewhere down that path, he ended up buying it last June.

“It’s a step-by-step process where we try different things and show different things,” he said. “The tours are small - 2-10 people with two investigators. We’ll show EVP, or electronic voice phenomenons, where you go back and listen to a recording. The human ear might not be able to pick that up, but an electronic signal might. We’ll do video and go back to see if we caught anything.”

“A gentleman from Alberta who was originally going to buy it defaulted on the mortgage, and things just fell into place,” he said. “The woman who owned it was going to burn it down, figuring the property was worth more. That’s when we stepped in. We wanted to turn it into a research center, but it needed a new roof, new electrical, new plumbing … it’s taken a lot of work, but we persevered. It’s ticking the way it is now because of the passion I’ve got for it.”

Giving participants a taste of the paranormal only draws more interest. Klaes said he’s even had inventors come and test new equipment, and that leads to more exposure and more teams coming to investigate.

If all of the work that needed to be done wasn’t enough, Klaes discovered there were over a half million honey bees living underneath the floorboards. And to bump the creepiness factor up ever more, there was black mold throughout the kitchen.

Eventually, he wants to turn the house into a full-blown museum. There are artifacts and original documentation that will be showcased, and he’d like to be able to provide some answers as to why the house is haunted. His team is almost at a point where they can start making significant correlations from the data they’ve collected.

“That was honestly the biggest obstacle,” (removing the bees) Klaes said. “I’m cognizant of the shortage of honey bees, so we wanted to make sure the removal was done properly. There couldn’t be anyone on the property while that process went down, so before we

“It’s got all of the things you’d want for a haunted house. Folklore, sightings, exorcisms. We’re just trying to keep it going, keep the research going, and continue to build it into a destination for visitors and investigators.”

I LOVE MY PARK DAY is an exciting statewide event to celebrate and enhance New York’s state parks, historic sites and public lands and bring visibility to the entire state park system and its needs. Volunteers from across the state will participate in cleanup, improvement, and beautification events at New York State parks and historic sites. Volunteers at Allegany State Park will help by: trimming brush and cleaning up the Red House bike path; litter pick-up at the Red House and Beehunter picnic and beach areas; stick/branch pick-up in public areas and campgrounds; fire pit rebuilding at the Red House campgrounds and cabin loops; hiking trail litter clean-up; lake front litter clean-up, McIntosh cabin painting and more! Those interested in volunteering in the project at Allegany State Park can register to volunteer by visiting www.ptny.org/ilovemypark or by emailing Sandy Boczar, Friends of Allegany I Love my Park Day Committee Chairperson at samni157@roadrunner.com. For more information please visit the Friends of Allegany State Park Facebook page or visit them online at www.friendsofallegany.com. Last year in cooperation with park staff, the Friends of Allegany coordinated the park’s most successful ILMP Day since its inception with over 165 volunteers, coming in a close second for the largest turnout in the state! We are looking forward to serving our wonderful park in 2017.

GEOBASH XII FRIDAY, MAY 19 - SUNDAY, MAY 21 • ASP 2 CAMP ALLEGANY The 12th annual gathering of geocachers in beautiful Allegany State Park is almost here! The weekend starts on Thursday night when the organizing committee will be hosting an informal “Pizza & Mountain Pies” event to thank those that help out with setting up the event grounds and to welcome early comers to the park. The annual Meet & Greet Bonfire event hosted by the Allegheny Rangers will be held again on Friday night. The musicians, The Very Amazing Gentlemen, were a huge hit last year, and they enjoyed the event so much that they are coming to entertain us all again. On Saturday, the ASPGB XII event will take place at Camp Allegany. With plenty of activities planned, along with lots of new geocaches, it should be a busy weekend. Sunday will play host to the traditional FREE pancake & sausage breakfast to get everyone up and going, and clean up the event grounds. Come and stay the weekend or for the day. Allegany State Park is beautiful all year ’round, but springtime is an extra special season. The trees, the animals, and the flowers are all things that are part of the GeoBash experience. There are many beautiful spots in the park and it’s no coincidence that there are geocaches located in strategic spots all over the park. For more info: www.facebook.com/ASPGeoBash.

TRAIL CENTRAL

May Flowers Bring ... Dinosaurs and Opera? By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau

May brings a wide range of activities from opera to a Dinosaur Zoo, from serious to magical illusions, from a walleye tournament to a tasty celebration of the springtime wild onion - the leek. It is time to open your calendar to May, pack your bags, and head out on your next adventure, into the Allegheny National Forest Region of northwestern Pennsylvania. GRAND OPENING OF THE MARILYN HORNE MUSEUM The Marilyn Horne Museum and Exhibit Center will be dedicated May 6, 2017 at 2pm. This new attraction honors Bradford’s native born, world famous, opera star - Marilyn Horne. A tour of the museum will follow the dedication with light refreshments served. The Museum features full-size replicas of some of Ms. Horne’s costumes from her favorite operas along with details of her life titled, Beginnings, Starting Out in California, The Rise of an Opera Star, and Marilyn Talks. Visitors will be able to hear and see her perform in video clips from selected operas, presented on video screens and accompanying headphones in individual alcoves. Four of Ms. Horne’s career favorites and most successful roles - Arsace in Rossini’s Semiramide, the title role in Bizet’s Carmen, Isabella in Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri and the title role in Handel’s Rinaldo are highlighted. Ms. Horne has recorded a series of audio programs in which she shares anecdotes on a range of subjects from her storied career. A few titles of the recorded audio programs include: The state of Opera and Recital Today, Greatest Moments, Peers and Presidents, Opera Favorites, A Rich and Full Life, Self-Belief, Determination and Persistence, and Musical Repertoire and Legacy. A series of colorful panels chart the arc of Ms. Horne’s operatic career, including debuts at prestigious opera houses, such as the Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House Convent Garden. Honoring Bradford’s native born, world famous, opera star, the new Marilyn Horne Museum will open to the public May 6, 2017.

In the Theater/Dedication Room, an original 10-minute, high-definition feature video presentation will showcase Ms. Horne in performance as well as the performers who influenced her, worked alongside her and have been influenced by her. The room showcases a mural reproduction of Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Italy. Musical Repertoire and Legacy offers an overview of the breadth of Ms. Horne’s repertoire. She has performed opera, classical songs in multiple languages and styles, and American classical songs. Her expansive career and her presence in popular culture is further displayed in a collage of images, promotional posters, album covers and large-scale graphics, representing her in all of her many roles, from world-traveling opera star and recital performer to guest star on Sesame Street, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Odd Couple, and the Carol Burnett Show. A Dedication Performance will begin at 5pm at the Bromeley Family Theater. Performances will be by DeAndre Simmons, bass, Julie Davies, soprano, and Martin Katz, pianist/accompanist. A reception will immediately follow the performance in the KOA Speer Electronics Library at the University at Pittsburgh Campus, 300 Campus Drive, Bradford, PA. For information please call 814-362-7501 or e-mail-uscinski@pitt.edu.

One of the most popular attractions at Stinkfest is the Outhouse Races.

STINKFEST: A CELEBRATION OF THE WILD LEEK Join in the fun at the 16th annual “StinkFest,” a relaxed, family-friendly, day-long event which begins at 11am and goes to 6pm on Saturday, May 6. A leek, grown in the wilds of the forest, is harvested in the springtime. A leek has a mild, onion-like taste. In its raw state, the vegetable is firm and crunchy, with a very distinct scent - one which is known to linger once consumed. Boiling turns it soft and mild. At the festival a very wide variety of foods, all with the ingredient of leeks, will be available for tasting and purchase. At the festival you can sample and vote for your favorite leek dip. Taste a variety of leek sausage, leek dumplings, leek soup, and just about any type of leek food imaginable. Food and craft vendors will line the street for your sampling and shopping pleasure. Live music adds to this festive hometown celebration. Pony rides will be available for the kids. The annual “outhouse races” are always a popular attraction during the local festival. A variety of local businesses build their own version of this old-time necessity, and then a

SPRINGTIME HIKES TO VIEW THE WILDFLOWERS The best way to view the springtime blooms within the Allegheny National Forest and the surrounding areas around Bradford, Westline and Smethport is to choose one of the hiking trails which traverse the forest. The Marilla Area Trails are an interconnecting set of trails with varying attractions and different levels of difficulty. The Marilla Reservoir trail is a 1-mile, easy-grade hiking trail suitable for all ages. It circles the Marilla Reservoir and features a wooden covered bridge, three raised walkways and a delightful gazebo about halfway along the trail. Interconnecting trails include Marilla Springs, White Pine, and nearby are Marilla Rocks and the recently opened Cornelius Connection to Gilbert Reservoir. The Marilla Trail system is located approximately five miles west of Bradford, along PA Route 346. One flower to look for is a trillium, brilliant white in color; it is readily visible in many locations and can be found in large colonies. Other springtime flowers include bee balm, daises and trout lilies. A natural show stopper, the spectacular Mountain Laurel, almia latifolia, is also commonly called calico-bush, or spoonwood. Scattered throughout the forest, it is naturally found on rocky slopes and it grows in large thickets. Blooming in May or early June, the mass of pink flowers will create a blanket of beautiful pink blossoms along many forest trails. Kinzua Valley Trail is a scenic 7-mile, family friendly trail for hiking and biking. Located along the banks of the scenic Kinzua Creek, the surface is crushed limestone, and the trail connects the village of Westline to Red Bridge Campground in the Allegheny National Forest. Trailheads are located at both ends of the trail. In Westline you can stay or dine at a local favorite - the Westline Inn. At Red Bridge, cabins and camping for both tent and RV are available online at recreation.gov. A trail map on page 21 highlights a few favorite trails.
