COMMUNITIES CONNECTED BY TRAILS: EVGV TRAIL READY TO MOVE FORWARD

It’s been a long road to this point, but the reality of the EVGV Trail is one step closer. A proposed network of bike and foot trails woven into the communities of Ellicottville and Great Valley, the EVGV Trail aims to provide another amenity for the community. The overall vision lays out roughly 15 miles of connected trails, allowing for safe travel from places like Ellicottville Central School to the Ellicottville Library. It’s an optimistic endeavor. Construction on Phase 1 is expected to begin this summer. And as the project continues its need for funding, the EVGV Trail will host its annual Ham and Turkey raffle on Sunday, June 9 at the Ellicottville American Legion. ICE CREAM MILKSHAKES SPECIALTY SUNDAES

By Mary Heyl June 6, 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when over 150,000 Allied troops landed on a 50-mile stretch of the beaches of Normandy, France. This history-making day changed the course of World War II for the Allies and is still celebrated each year in France. This year, people will travel from all over the world to celebrate the momentous anniversary in Normandy through festivals, parades, a World War II international film festival and a commemorative concert. The village of Ellicottville, too, will be celebrating this important day through a monthlong Veterans Appreciation Month in June. The celebration, sponsored by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, invites all veterans to visit Ellicottville’s shops and restaurants for special deals in honor of their service.

Barb Pump, Chamber Project Development Manager, explained that the idea was brought to the Chamber by a local resident who has cultivated a strong interest in and recognition of local veterans, especially in World War II. Although there are few living World War II veterans today, their service, especially in the D-Day invasion, continues to be celebrated as generations of Americans have enjoyed the freedoms afforded by their sacrifice. Known as Operation Overlord, the D-Day invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and took several months of planning. Prior to June 6, 1944, the Allies created a large-scale campaign designed to mislead the Germans about the invasion location, which involved Norway and the narrow area between Britain and France known as Pas-de-Calais as possible invasion sites. However, American General Eisenhower selected Normandy and an original date of June 5, but delayed the invasion one day due to inclement weather. By dawn on June 6, thousands of paratroopers and glider troops were on the ground in France, which was famously portrayed by the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers. More than 11,000 aircraft were mobilized to provide air cover while 5,000 ships carrying troops and supplies traveled from England to Normandy to attack the fortified beaches. On that day, some 4,000 Allied troops were killed during the invasion, and thousands more were wounded or missing. Over the following two months, the Allied troops liberated all of northern France and by the next spring, they had successfully defeated the Germans. Today, the Normandy landings are known as the beginning of the end of the war in Europe. Pump is excited that Ellicottville, too, is playing a part in celebrating this momentous day in history. “I think a lot of people are definitely supportive of this idea and concept,” said Pump. “I’m just glad that we can be a part of it. This is the first time that we’ve designated a whole month to honoring veterans, and we owe them so much for their sacrifice.” Pump explained that many Chamber-member businesses are offering a variety of specials, which will be advertised in their businesses and on flyers throughout the village. Watson’s Chocolates is offering veterans a 15% discount all month long, and Cupcaked is offering a buy four, get two cupcakes free special for veterans. Restaurants, such as Villaggio, are offering dining discounts for veterans. Those interested in accommodations can enjoy discounts at places like The Jefferson Inn and Wingate, both of which are offering a discount to veterans for their stay. Pump encourages veterans to visit Ellicottville all month long for special deals and discounts and, if possible, bring some form of identification that shows their military status. “I encourage people to check out the Chamber’s Facebook page (facebook.com/Ellicottville) for updates on participating businesses and the specials they’re offering to vets,” said Pump. To view the full listing of member businesses and learn about upcoming village events, visit www.ellicottvilleny.com.

Back-to-Back Outdoor Fun at Holiday Valley

The 8th annual Mudslide Trail Run on June 15th brings in a few new (and challenging) obstacles; Follow it up with the Ellicottville Paddle Fest at Spruce Lake the very next weekend! By Spencer Timkey

HOLIDAY VALLEY MUDSLIDE Saturday, June 15th

ELLICOTTVILLE PADDLE FESTIVAL Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23

@holidayvalley

The Holiday Valley Mudslide is not a Spartan Race. And that’s by design. To those of you reading that have completed a Spartan Race, bravo. It takes a new level of mental fortitude to accomplish a race like that — one that subjects you to a number of difficult obstacles while also running 8 miles. With every event they run, Holiday Valley has one priority in mind: having fun. You don’t see many frowning faces at the Annual Beer & Wine Festival, nor down-in-the-dumps attitudes at SnowBar. The Mudslide isn’t any different. On Saturday, June 15, the Mudslide returns. Now in its 8th year, it’s become a staple on the HV event calendar. Runners can choose between a 3.5 or 5.4-mile course, which both start at Spruce Lake before finishing at Yodeler Lodge. Runners take the Spruce Chairlift to the top, where waves go off every 30 minutes. The courses are a little different — the 3.5 has 11 obstacles, the 5.4 with 14 — and the 5.4 has a lot more uphill sections. Over the past few years, obstacles have changed to keep it fresh, but runners can expect one thing: Getting super muddy. Spinning tubes made their debut last year at the top of Tannenbaum (the photos are hilarious), as did the rope climb up the race hut on Foxfire. There are a few new obstacles ready to be unveiled this year, including a very special one (it’s a surprise. You’ll need to sign up for the run to check it out.) Both courses take you through the heart of the resort, where you’ll see sections you wouldn’t if you only come during the winter months. Last year, when the temperature hit close to 90º, runners welcomed the sight of Holiday Valley’s HKD snowmaking guns blasting cold water. Runners finish at the bottom of the Yodeler ski slope, where they’re required to slide down into a giant mud puddle. If you’re serious about winning, make sure you sign up for one of the earlier waves — you can do that at the registration table. A post-race party includes beers, a DJ, awards and the kid’s race. And of course, many stories to be shared amongst the participants. If you’ve got a young one that wants to run the 3.5 mile course, they can! Holiday Valley allows children 7-years-old and up to run if accompanied by an adult. If they don’t want to run the full course, the kid’s race (set up at the bottom of Yodeler) is a separate event that takes place after the main race. What a great way to get the little ones involved! Holiday Valley will also have a vendor village set up, where The City Garage, Adventure Bound onthefly, EVL Half Marathon, Ellicottville Oasis Spa, Villaggio, Upstate Farms and John Harvard’s Brew House will be set up. If you’re looking for a mud run to have some fun in, the Mudslide is for you! The resort caps competitors at 1,200, so if you haven’t signed up, get a group of friends together and get on it. The Mudslide goes down Saturday, June 15. For more information and to register, head to www.holidayvalley.com/mudslide.

For diehard enthusiasts, creating an outdoor scene is easy. They don’t think twice about waking up and heading outside, whether it’s to bike, camp or kayak. In a town like Ellicottville, where winter activities are so prevalent, the ‘I want to be outside’ attitude permeates pretty rapidly throughout the community. When John Rounds and his family moved to Ellicottville in the summer of 2015 and opened Adventure Bound onthefly, he saw a niche to fill. Specializing in standup paddleboards, kayaks and fly fishing (amongst many others), Rounds worked to add additional activities to complement the already strong biking, hiking and outdoor scene. Come June 22 & 23, Adventure Bound onthefly will present the 4th Annual Ellicottville Paddle Festival, a weekend of getting on the water, trying something new and celebrating the outdoors. “The Ellicottville Paddle Festival was founded with the intention of providing a summer kickoff event,” Rounds said. “It’s an incredible base camp for so many outdoor activities; Spruce Lake at Holiday Valley is a hidden gem that provides a local water fix in a beautiful setting.” Spruce Lake’s primary function is reservoir for Holiday Valley’s world-class snowmaking system. For a long time, it sat as the best-kept secret in the Ellicottville area. But a plot of land so beautiful, scenic and practical deserves to be utilized. “Over the past few years, we’ve collaborated with Holiday Valley on the Spruce Lake Demo and Rental Venue,” he said. “We built a new log cabin headquarter and storage building, while the resort added parking, port-a-potties and an enhanced beach area. The entire area has really developed nicely.” During the two-day paddle event, Rounds and his crew will run a kids SUP race, the SUP headstand challenge, paddle clinics, and the opportunity to rent specialty standup paddleboards and kayaks. Rounds says it’s not just a reason to practice your standup paddleboarding and kayaking, but a great way to get outside with the family. “A local Boy Scout Troop will be there cooking food, and Spencer Murray will be DJing to provide an atmosphere,” Rounds continued. “Our rental SUPs and kayaks are top quality and include PFD’s and safety leashes. We’ll have certified SUP instructors at the Paddle Festival, so regardless of if you’re new to it or experienced, you’ll take something away from it.” Adventure Bound has steadily grown the ancillary outdoor community here, offering Spruce Lake’s amenities to corporate outings, birthday parties and other large groups. In addition to SUP and kayaking, groups have the option to learn or practice fly fishing — a pretty diverse offering. “This is an opportunity to get out on the water if you haven’t before,” he said. “The goal is to keep people coming back summer after summer, helping us continue to grow the great outdoor Ellicottville scene.” Ellicottville Paddle Festival runs on Saturday, June 22 from 10am-5pm and Sunday, June 23 from 10am-3pm. For more information, head to adventureboundonthefly.com or stop in the shop, located downtown on Ellicottville’s main drag.

At one of the most popular intersections in Ellicottville (just north of the village at the Route 219 & 242 junction), you’ll find Steelbound Brewery and Distillery. Steelbound is one of the newest additions to the EVL bar & restaurant scene. I sat down with owner Bill Bursee and marketing director Todd Harmon to find out how their first season went and what we could expect to see this summer.

I met the guys at the bar on a Friday morning. Bill had just arrived after a meeting with Senator Gallivan. He was in a suit and tie and I could tell, that wasn’t his normal get-up. Bill owns a successful construction company and it’s evident that’s where his passion lies. Just look around the place. Every time I go there, I see some cool new thing that has been built into the amazing motif. When I asked the guys how this winter went, they both looked at each other and smiled. “It was what we expected.” Bill said. “We got some things nailed on the first try and other things needed to be improved upon.” One of the things they really wanted in action this winter was their shuttle bus. The plan is to offer free shuttle service to select locations in Ellicottville. Rumor has it that they have been working with HoliMont and we may see some designated stops there before the snow flies. All in all, business was good, and more people are figuring out what Steelbound has to offer. You may hear some rumbling from the parking lot this summer at Steelbound. They teamed up with Gowanda Harley-Davidson and 103.3 The Edge radio to host Bike Night every second Thursday of the month through this summer. The Edge will be doing a live feed broadcast from Ellicottville while bands and bikes create the background buzz. There will be drink and food specials as well as raffles and giveaways. Bike Night is not where Steelbound’s relationship ends with Gowanda Harley. Just days ago, the distillery released hand labeled bottles of a collaborated moonshine with the popular bike dealer. The label screams Harley and should be a hit with 2-wheeled riders and more. I drive by Steelbound every day on my way to and from work, and I recently noticed some construction going on outside. Turns out that we can expect a new outdoor patio to open soon. The vision is to build a unique patio atmosphere with fire pits and cozy seating. Bill has more big plans in the works for the Ellicottville location; stay tuned for details. Speaking of locations, Steelbound will have another place to hang later this summer. Sometime in July or August Steelbound Springville will open. Springville is Bill’s hometown and when he learned of Papa Jakes Bar and Restaurant closing, he saw an opportunity for a second location. Steelbound Springville will feature bourbon barrel aged beers and hard-to-find deep dish Chicago style pizza. Theirs will be called the “Capone.” On top of everything else the folks at Steelbound have going on, they also managed to bring home a bronze medal for their Better Red light Ale, from the Hunter Mountain Beer Festival in Hunter, NY. Before I left, I got to sample a unique new vodka from the Steelbound Distillery, Hoppy Hour. You guessed it - vodka made from beer. The hoppy IPA finish is refreshing and clean. I see a few “Hoppy Hour” martinis in my near future. Do yourself a “flavor” and visit Steelbound Ellicottville or Steelbound Springville this summer. Steelbound Brewery & Distillery in Ellicottville is located at 6600 Route 219 North, across from Tim Horton’s. Head to www.steelboundevl.com or follow them on Facebook to find out what’s on tap and details on upcoming events.

SPOTLIGHT: FEELGOOD FUNDRAISERS By Spencer Timkey

ELLICOTTVILLE-GREAT VALLEY TRAIL After 9 years of planning, the EVGV Trail ready to move forward

EMPIRE STATE RIDE TO END CANCER Ellicottville resident to cycle 500+ miles across New York State Rick Jackson and his wife, Glenda, in 2009, members of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Cycling Club.

The EVGV Trailhead, located next to the entrance of the Ellicottville Nannen Arboretum.

@bperksey

It’s been a long road to this point. But the reality of the EVGV Trail is one step closer.

Cancer has affected Rick Jackson’s life in more ways than he would care to count.

His wife Glenda and fellow real estate agent Caitlin Croft currently find themselves in the throes of battling breast cancer. His friend (and owner/editor of this paper) Brenda Perks has maintained a warrior mindset as she wins her stares down with Leukemia. He lost a brother. He beat Melanoma.

Since its formation, the EVGV Trail committee has shown a willingness to fight for the trail in the face of a seemingly endless barrage of permits, insurance issues, red tape and other difficulties. But with the community behind it, the dream has stayed alive. When BOCES students built the trailhead at the Town Center in 2017 (next to the entrance of the Nannen Arboretum), it was physical, tangible progress. It ignited the community — no longer just talk, the trail had a starting point. But the momentum came to a screeching halt. In an effort to protect the Northern Long Eared Bat, a threatened species in Cattaraugus County, New York State Fish & Wildlife enacted a rule limiting the clearing of land between the months of April and November. To boot, 1/10th of an acre of the proposed trail rested on federally-protected wetlands, requiring the committee to receive permission from the Army Corps of Engineers. Committee member Joe Wright and MDA Engineer Mark Alianello have navigated the trail’s continued progress through this landmine of bureaucracy. With the i’s dotted and t’s crossed, they can finally move to begin construction on Phase 1. “The last couple of years has been spent getting insurance squared away, getting the property owners to sign off, the legality of everything — now that’s done, we can begin working our way towards the intersection of Route 219 and Route 242,” Wright said. “Realistically, we’re looking at June or July to begin excavation.” This section, which will lead from the trailhead to Tim Horton’s, required approval from seven private property owners (as well as the DEC/Army Corps). As Phase 1, it’s required the most heavy lifting. The committee, contracting Northrup Construction to excavate, has the necessary funds to complete it. “It’s only the beginning,” Wright said. “Once we begin this — where people can see the work, the progress — it will make the next phases easier. The community support has been outstanding.” On Sunday, June 9, the EVGV Trail will host its annual Ham and Turkey raffle at the American Legion. Tickets are $20 apiece, which gets you in the door and entered into the cash drawings. Once inside, you can buy tickets and spin to win a myriad of hams, turkeys, and other meat prizes; the tickets also get you beer and refreshments inside. After completing excavation, the Trail committee will hold fast for more funding to finish the segment. But the work doesn’t stop there — the next phases include a trail network around the Village, looping in the town park and connecting to the Nannen Arboretum. “Fortunately, Cattaraugus County has a newfound commitment in trail-network building,” Wright said. “The ultimate goal is to connect our trail with the Pat McGee Trail, the Allegheny River Trail, the rails-to-trails network that connects Orchard Park with Ashford. It’s been a long road, but we’re just on the brink of making some real progress.” For more information on the Ellicottville-Great Valley Trail, visit evgvtrail.org.

His motivation for helping the afflicted stems from these personal experiences. The prevalence of cancer means it’s always at the forefront of our brains — someone we know, someone we care for, someone we want to win. Jackson will use this motivation as fuel when he cycles 500+ miles across New York State in the 6th Annual Empire State Ride July 27-Aug. 3. The ride takes the concept of fundraising and turns it into an experience. Cyclists from around the country convene in New York City before making the journey to Niagara Falls. Covering 60-90 miles a day, the race has raised over $1.5M since 2015 for cancer research at the Roswell Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo. Last year, 137 riders participated (including local management teams from Holiday Valley and HoliMont), and ESR expects over 200 this year, according to an email correspondence with planning members. “It’s all about raising awareness,” Jackson said. “Cancer is so prevalent. The experience my wife and I have had at Roswell has been fantastic, and I’m doing this to raise money and help other people affected.” A native of Ellicottville, Rick Jackson moved south and called sunny Florida his home for over 25 years. He found his passion for cycling while working on the police force. Going as far as starting a cycling club with his wife, the Jacksons began participating in rides — including one that spanned two days in the Florida Keys — and got others involved as well. “For the Police Athletic League, we started a ride that in its first year had 70 or so riders,” he said. “By the third, we had over 1,500. We went out to Lake Tahoe and rode in the America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride, which spanned two states. I’ve always been really into it, and since we moved back up here (in 2010) I’ve been looking for a reason to get back. The Empire State Ride is as good of a reason as any.” Driving 500 miles is a hike, let alone cycling it. Over the past few years Jackson has lost close to 100 pounds, using this ride as the catalyst to keep the weight off. The Empire State Ride Facebook page frequently livestreams a fitness and nutrition expert that gives tips on maintaining peak performance while riding — like staggering nutrition and hydration, which keeps the internal engine running. “It’s 60-90 miles a day — that’s a lot,” he said. “The physical aspect won’t be as difficult for me because I love riding so much. But it’s keeping that mental positivity up and staying focused. What I’m looking forward to most is the ride, and finishing it (laughs).” At 500+ miles, this will be the longest ride Jackson has ever done. Leading up to it, he plans on hitting Chapel Hill a few times to make sure the legs are dialed in. He’ll also stop and see Ellicottville’s resident bike expert and owner of Bike and Bean, Dennis Baldwin, to ensure his equipment is tuned, sized and runs properly. The race, which starts at Wagner College in Staten Island, has stops all along New York State. To participate in the race, riders must raise at least $3,500. Jackson and his riding partner, Priscilla Snyder, have both hit their goal with just under two months to go. “The support we’ve received so far from the community has been exceptional,” Jackson said. “This ride will be a challenge, but I’m up for it. I’m looking forward to it.” For more information on the Empire State Ride, head to empirestateride.com. To donate to Rick or Priscilla’s ride, stop by the Howard Hanna Real Estate Office, downtown Ellicottville.

“WHY DON’T WE JUST DANCE” This Year’s Cattaraugus County Fair Welcomes Country Singer Josh Turner

A Conversation with JOSH TURNER HULICK: You’ve had tremendous success with your albums over the years. Your most recent album, “I Serve A Savior”, not only went to the top on Billboard’s Top Country Albums, but also on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums. Was a gospel album always something you wanted to do? TURNER: This current record has been a dream come true in some ways because, yes, I’ve wanted to do a gospel record for a long time and my fans have asked for it too. HULICK: The reviews were impressive, with Worship Magazine saying it is “musically brilliant”. Getting that validation from another genre must give you a sense of pride that few artists get to know. TURNER: Being complimented on this record by the Christian music genre has been very fulfilling. I didn’t seek that out, though. I just strived to make the most heartfelt record I could. Seeing how it has sold so far and getting the praise is all “icing on the cake”!

......................... Thursday, Aug. 1st | Little Valley, NY By Melanie Hulick The last time I spoke with Josh Turner was in 2013 for his appearance at a local venue as part of his “Punching Bag” tour. Turner is returning to the area as a headliner at the Cattaraugus County Fair on Thursday, August 1 in Little Valley, NY. I was lucky enough to catch up with the singer/songwriter, who hasn’t slowed down. He continues to tour regularly and will be heading to England for a few dates in September. The Grand Ole Opry member’s most recent project is a gospel album called “I Serve A Savior”, which came out in the fall of 2018. Although his debut album in 2003, “Long Black Train”, gave a nod to the gospel genre, this latest album is gospel track-to-track with some of the most recognized gospel songs as well as original songs … one in particular has close family ties, which you will read about. The recipient of rave reviews and top placements on multiple Billboard Top 10 charts, “I Serve A Savior” has met all expectations for the singer. With hits like “Long Black Train”, “Time Is Love”, “Your Man” and “Why Don’t We Just Dance”, Turner is no stranger to nominations for Grammys, CMA & ACM awards, and has reached a milestone at the Grand Ole Opry since his last appearance in Western New York in 2013, which we also touched on in the following conversation. Get your tickets now and bring your best line dancing skills for a night of great music and a whole lot of fair fun at the 177th annual Cattaraugus County Fair.

HULICK: The album includes some well known gospel songs as well as some original music. One in particular was written by your wife, Jennifer and your son, Hampton. Tell me how that came about. Have they written for you before? TURNER: The River (Of Happiness) was written by my wife and my eldest son about five years ago at this point. This is the first cut they’ve ever had. Hampton was playing something on his mandolin and Jennifer asked what it was. He said it was something he just made up. She then replied, “That is how you write songs; you make up words and music and put them together.” She asked what he saw when he played it. He said “a river.” She asked “what kind of river?” He said “a happy one.” They sat down to write the song and the rest is history! HULICK: Has your idea of becoming a major player in country music changed at all since the time of your debut album, “Long Black Train” in 2003? TURNER: My goals in this business haven’t really changed all that much. I still look for the best songs I can find for me and my voice and hope they have success and a positive effect on my fans. HULICK: You are one of the youngest members of the Grand Ole Opry and hit a very impressive milestone as far as the number of performances you’ve had. Can you talk about that a little? TURNER: I’m over the 150 performance mark at this point at the Grand Ole Opry. I’ve been a member now for almost 12 years. Both of these facts are hard to believe for me. The Opry has been really good to me and I’ve tried to be good to it. I wasn’t keeping count of my performances and didn’t know they were! HULICK: In 2003 we talked about the Josh Turner Scholarship Fund, which supports music education and assists students interested in a future in arts & music. Do you have any success stories of any of the students the fund has helped? TURNER: My scholarship fund was started by my wife and me in October 2005, I think. We have had quite a few recipients thus far and they’ve all gone on to the college of their choice and seem to be doing really well. I’m proud of the fact I can help young people pursue a career in the arts. HULICK: What’s the best thing about being Josh Turner? TURNER: The best thing about being Josh Turner is that I’m married to my soul mate, Jennifer, with whom I have 4 incredible boys … and I get to make country music for a living!

ART IN THE WILDS

A Top Destination for Artists and Art Lovers

Kane, Pennsylvania’s annual Juried Fine Arts Show & Exhibit showcases Inspiration in Many Forms By Maryl Heyl

ELLEN PAQUETTE

LEEANNE MARQUIS

STACIE JOHNSON-LESKE

Entering in its 13th year, Art in the Wilds, a juried fine art show in Kane, Pennsylvania, has become well-known throughout the region and now, throughout the United States, as a top destination for artists and art lovers. Director Marilyn Blackmore is thrilled to announce that the show was named “one of 11 must-attend shows for artists and craftspeople in the U.S.” in 2018 by Sunshine Artist Magazine, and it’s easy to understand why. Beautifully made jewelry, pottery, glass arts, woodworking, sculpture and other finely crafted works are just some of the items featured each year, along with an exhibition of student artwork from area high schools.

Paquette is pleased to share that Art in the Wilds will also be the first opportunity for the public to see her newly published book, “The Portfolio of Ivy Brambleblossom,” which features several of the animal portraits. To learn more about Paquette and see samples of her work, visit www.ellenpaquette.com.

Since 2006, Art in the Wilds has been held during the fourth weekend in June in Evergreen Park in Kane, Pennsylvania. This year’s dates are June 22 and 23 from 10am-5pm on Saturday, and 10am-4pm on Sunday. Both admission and parking are free, and there is a variety of food vendors available for lunch and snacks.

Jewelry artist LeAnne Marquis is also looking forward to participating in Art in the Wilds this year. The gemstones used in her jewelry are handpicked for their uniqueness, and many of her latest creations are created using a torch to heat-treat copper to create beautiful colors. “Each piece is designed and handcrafted by me and each one an individual work of wearable art,” Marquis explained.

According to Blackmore, the event began as a conversation among like-minded friends who had a dream of making Kane a destination for fine artwork. The name of the event was inspired by the PA Wilds’ designation of the area as part of its 2.1 million acres of public land. PA Wilds integrates conservation and economic development to strengthen its communities, and the show has continued to celebrate this through promoting the work of regional artists in the beautiful setting of Evergreen Park. Unlike other art and craft shows, participation in Art in the Wilds is not a guarantee; in fact, the process is competitive, as artists must submit their work before a panel of jurors in order to be accepted into the show. Not only does this ensure the high quality of the work, but the process also guarantees an outstanding variety of artwork, mediums, styles and more. According to Blackmore, artists must submit photographs of recent work as early as a year in advance, and their work is juried on the following criteria: overall impact, originality, presentation, design and mastery of their technique. Additionally, all work must be original creations, made by hand. While many of the artists are from Pennsylvania, some come from neighboring states throughout the mid-Atlantic region, and visitors come from near and far, too, to enjoy the event and the quality of work it exhibits.

ELLEN PAQUETTE Renaissance-themed Animal Portraits

For artist Ellen Paquette, 2019 is her fifth year as an exhibitor at Art in the Wilds. Last year, she was honored with the Best of Show in 2D award, and she is looking forward to another great year. “It’s a wonderful show to be a part of for a variety of reasons,” she said. “The crowd that attends is supportive and interested, and the festival volunteers take such great care of the artists. The beautiful shady park setting is perfect.” Paquette emphasized that it is an honor just to be selected to participate in the show, let alone win an award, as “it has developed a strong reputation as a successful show and has a very competitive jury process,” she added. This year, her display will include original paintings and limited edition prints of her Renaissance-themed animal portraits. “I’m focusing more on endangered species as time goes on,” Paquette explained. “I make sure I have work available at a variety of price points so there’s something for everyone.”

LEANNE MARQUIS Fire-painted Jewelry

Marquis, who holds a fine art degree from the University of Hartford, Hartford Art School, has maintained a life-long passion for painting and jewelry. An innovator, she is always experimenting with different techniques, colors and stones to create her unique pieces. For this, she has been recognized throughout the region and the country. Her jewelry has been featured in the juried art publication New Art Review, Rochester Magazine, Syracuse Wedding Magazine and more. Her “fire-painted” pieces are a beautiful addition to Art in the Wilds and would make a beautiful addition to one’s jewelry collection. To learn more about Marquis and her work, visit www.marquisjewelry.com.

STACIE JOHNSON-LESKE Pottery Inspired by Dance Stacie Johnson-Leske is looking forward to a great weekend at Art in the Wilds this year, which is one of several fine arts shows where she exhibits her work. Johnson-Leske, who resides and owns a studio in Ridgway, Pennsylvania, holds a BFA from the North Carolina School of the Arts. In 2002, she received ceramics lessons as a gift from her husband, and ever since has nurtured her interest in the craft and become a well-known potter throughout the region. Her love of dance actually informs and inspires many of her pieces. “For me, the clay is the body of the dancer,” Johnson-Leske said. She compares the white stoneware that appears delicate to the body of a dancer, which also appears delicate, but has incredible strength. “I am the music as I use the rhythm of the spinning wheel to encourage the clay to compress and stretch into fanciful shapes which, like a prima ballerina, are lightweight yet deceptively strong and durable.” From bowls to plates to platters and custom pieces, Johnson-Leske’s work is a testament to her artistry. In fact, visitors can see her at work in her booth, where she will be creating art throughout the weekend. Learn more at www.yourfiredpottery.com. Visitors to Art in the Wilds will be treated to the works of many other artists in diverse mediums including wood, ceramics, glass, fiber, metal, photography and more. To learn more about the show and view a listing of 2019 artists, visit www.artinthewilds.org. Artist applications for the 2020 show will be available on the website in January 2020 and due by March 1, 2020.
