By Spencer Timkey For Jake Northrup, PGA Professional at Bradford’s Pennhills Club, starting a fundraising page for this year’s Patriot Golf Day was a no-brainer. At the PGA Meeting in New York City this past year, Folds of Honor founder Dan Rooney spoke on the how and why of starting the foundation, referencing the struggles veterans go through and the impact his organization has had. After seeing the presentation, Northrup got right to work. “It was gripping, the things he told us,” he said. “To see what he’s done and why he does it, it was all very impressive. We set up a fundraising page, and we’re hosting a tournament at Pennhills on June 23, where part of the entry fee will go to Folds of Honor.” Wanting to do something for the community - and more specifically, for veterans Northrup has already raised over $1,000. He’s working on getting a color guard for the start of the tournament and for someone to come sing the national anthem. Holiday Valley is another regional course that aligns itself with Folds of Honor, and has for the past few years. Assistant PGA Professional Kyle Benish is the spearhead, asking for a $1 donation per round and creating displays in the pro shop all summer long. Folds of Honor is a national organization that raises money and awareness for disabled veterans and their families and the families of fallen soldiers, while distributing the funds raised to individual, up to $5,000 scholarships. The money helps families with tuition, books, and the general cost that goes with attending higher education. Since 2007, it has helped countless families with financial assistance by awarding over 12,000 scholarships. Their motto says it best - “Honor their sacrifice. Educate their legacy.” Too often, we hear stories of charitable organizations paying their leadership absurd salaries that takes away from the cause itself. One of great things about Folds of Honor is that 86% of the money raised goes towards the scholarships.

Patriot Golf Day is Folds of Honor’s largest fundraising tool. A national initiative, any course can participate, whether it’s raising awareness or actively fundraising. (As of spring 2015, over 5,200 courses have participated.) A tournament in Texas raised over $2 million last year. Professional golfers like Rickie Fowler have gotten behind the cause as well. In addition to the tournament and fundraising page, Northrup and his guys will also do marathon golf - play as many holes as they can and get people to pledge money to raise some additional funds. “This is one of the best causes I’ve worked with,” Northrup said. “These guys gave up everything, and some of the families don’t have them anymore. We want to raise money for this cause because of how admirable it is.” The Patriot Golf Day Tournament at Pennhills Club is set for Saturday, June 23. It’s a noon shotgun start and a scramble format, $75 for members and $95 for non-members. There will be food and prizes, with part of the entry fee going to Folds of Honor. You can donate to Folds of Honor all summer long at the Holiday Valley pro shop, or head to www.foldsofhonor.com for more information on the cause.

When a community comes together ...

Whether it’s delivering nutritious meals to the elderly, or organizing free family fun activities for all to enjoy, Ellicottville maintains a special connection amongst its community members By Caitlin Croft

MEALS ON WHEELS Volunteers needed to help deliver home meals in Ellicottville

STROLL THE STREETS Third season of Friday evening fun kicks off June 29th

Sometimes the smallest gestures make the biggest impact. One of the lesser known benefits provided by Cattaraugus County is the Meals on Wheels Program. This program serves meals to those over 60 years old who can’t necessarily prepare all of their meals themselves - whether it be as a result of an accident, illness, or frailty. In the Ellicottville area, Colleen Blanchard is the Nutrition Site Manager for the Cattaraugus County Department of Aging’s Senior Wellness and Nutrition Program, which organizes Meals on Wheels.

If you’ve driven through the Village of Ellicottville on any given Friday evening over the last two summers, you probably noticed something a bit different … was that a fire dancer? Oh look, there goes a stilt walker. Check out that live band on the sidewalk ...

Colleen, originally from Hamilton, Ontario, started coming to Ellicottville often when she met her now husband David Blanchard (who also volunteers for Meals on Wheels). For years Colleen worked for her family company that distributed Nestle and Haagen Daz Ice Cream, but after much time spent in our quaint little town, she fell in love with the community and decided she wanted to find a way to give back. In 2007 she started volunteering for Meals on Wheels, and in 2008, Colleen was hired as the Nutrition Site Manager. “We service the town and village of Ellicottville; the majority of our recipients live in the village. All meals are prepared daily and fresh from The Pines in Machias, NY, and only need to be heated up once they arrive at their resident destination.” Currently there are four volunteers who take time out of their day to deliver meals in Ellicottville. Fifteen meals per day, Monday through Friday. Colleen expressed the need for additional volunteers. “We are looking for interested volunteers who have a flexible schedule, seeing as how delivery time is during regular working hours - noon time. Volunteers must be compassionate and sociable as well. Sometimes this visit is the only human interaction these meal recipients have all day.” When talking with Colleen, she explained that these efforts go beyond just delivering the meal. Sometimes she will sit with the recipient and have a conversation, help take their garbage out, or even just open a water bottle. “This makes some of their days, and I couldn’t feel better about being there to help.” All in all, the food is great but the social component of it is even better. “If someone seems to be having a bad day or are just a bit off, I will get a hold of their emergency contact so that they are sure to reach out to them that day.” The Meals on Wheels program supports homebound recipients by helping them preserve their independence, delay or prevent nursing home placement, and improve or maintain their current health status. Without volunteers, the delivery of meals would be impossible. Colleen reiterated the need for volunteers, telling me how it is such an important and worthwhile cause. “It feels so good to give back, and to give the recipients more of that precious human/social connection.” If you are interested in joining Colleen as a volunteer, you can call her directly at 716-7203097. For more information regarding the Cattaraugus County Meals on Wheels Program, you can find them on Facebook (yes, they are connected to the social media world), or visit them at www.cattco.org/aging/nutrition-and-wellness-services. It is these small programs and gestures by Ellicottville residents that sets this great community apart and why so many from all over end up staying.

It was Stroll the Streets (STS), an initiative first brought up by John and Christy Rounds of Adventure Bound onthefly. While catching up with John to learn about the third season of STS, he couldn’t stop praising the STS Committee. “It is one thing to have an idea; everyone has ideas. Not all of them can turn it into reality. The STS Committee has worked SO hard to make this event successful.” The original concept of STS was to develop more awareness of the family friendly environment Ellicottville offers. The Friday night series offers an array of FREE (yes, you read that correctly) activities. Everything from face painters, balloon twisters, magicians, caricature artists, kids yoga and more! And many of the fabulous boutiques extend their hours a little later than normal for you to peruse. Participants also have the opportunity to blow giant bubbles with our Village Mayor John Burrell. Plenty of other fun activities fill the sidewalks of downtown, including fly fishing casting demos, chalk art, henna tattoos, live music, prize wheel and photo booth. “We wanted an event that families can plan their arrival around and create a reason for shops and boutiques to stay open. This way they say, ‘Oh, let’s go to Ellicottville for dinner and get there in time to ‘stroll the streets’.’ This event has grown into something special for the local community and visitors. “There are some people you will only see on Fridays for STS. It is so unique to see the locals gather with their friends and families; there aren’t many places anymore that you can let your kids run around and not worry about them; they are safe.” The 2018 series kicks off June 29 and will run every Friday through August 31 starting at 5pm. The event is presented by the Rotary Foundation for Youth and sponsored by DiMarco Vein Centers, Peters & Moriarty, Shults Automotive, Weed Ross Agency, Balloons, Villaggio and M&T Bank. Rounds noted that they are still actively soliciting sponsors; anyone interested can contact him for more information. When asked if there was anything else he wanted to share about this year’s event (i.e. new additions, etc.) a child-like grin spread across John’s face. “We are still in the initial phase, but we want to add a Farmer’s Market to the last four Fridays.” As he said this, my eyes lit up because it only makes sense. With Ellicottville being surrounded by fabulous farms, the fact that we don’t have one already almost seems wrong. Rounds hopes this will take off and turn into its own event for next summer, but for now, he is excited to add it to STS. His goal is to “get three to four ‘anchor’ vendors so that we can do a test run.” They hope to have homemade pies, mustard, assorted fruits and vegetables, along with maple syrup and honey. So if you are looking for a fun way to kick off your summer weekends in Ellicottville, head downtown into the village with the family and “Stroll the Streets”. Keep tabs on this year’s STS activities by following “Stroll the Streets Ellicottville” on Facebook. To show your support as a sponsor or if you have any questions, reach out to John Rounds at Adventure Bound onthefly, 716-217-4047 or email john@adventureboundonthefly.com.

Dogs and their owners will march before a panel of judges and along Main Street for all vendors and festival-goers to enjoy. There are several different categories - from the friendliest to the best-dressed pooch. Winners will receive certificates and prizes at the conclusion of the judging. Senn-sations Salon and Day Spa is sponsoring the Beautiful Baby Contest. An annual favorite, the contest is open to all babies under the age of one. Use your imagination and any materials to create a cardinal; all entries must be submitted at the festival by 9:30am that morning. UPROOTED IN CONCERT Michael Glabicki and former members of Rusted Root return to Summer Music Festival under a new project: UPROOTED

A Conversation with MICHAEL GLABICKI HULICK: You are returning to the Ellicottville’s Summer Music Festival this year … GLABICKI: Yes! I’ve played there with Rusted Root and this year will be with my new project, Uprooted. HULICK: Isn’t it a beautiful spot where you play at the festival … on the foothills of the slopes? GLABICKI: Yes it is. It’s awesome! We always have fun and have a great experience there. Music is so energy involved and the surroundings really affect the show, and unfortunately there are some places you go to and it’s always a terrible show because something is just not right. However, I love coming to Ellicottville because we always have a free flowing energetic time that’s a very beautiful experience. HULICK: The village is so beautiful too. GLABICKI: Yes it is … good food too!

......................... Friday, June 29 | Slopeside @ Holiday Valley By Melanie Hulick Can you believe it is almost time for Ellicottville’s Summer Music Festival? Well grab your blankets and lawn chairs and meet on the Holiday Valley foothills on June 29 for a night of great music. Uprooted, the newly formed band put together by lead singer Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root, are looking forward to their return to the festival with a different take on Rusted Root songs that you heard them perform in 2016. “Rusted Root is taking a break and working on some solo projects,” said Glabicki recently by phone. “We will be doing some new versions of older songs, along with some new songs from the new album we are working on under the umbrella of Uprooted.” Some of the members of Rusted Root are following Glabicki into the new band and will be touring with him this summer. The Summer Local recently caught up with Glabicki, and during our conversation, we talked about which members have joined him for the tour, which will be playing live on Friday, June 29 at the festival. Rusted Root started in 1990 in Pittsburgh, PA and have recorded eight albums that have sold over three million copies. In 1994 they released their first platinum selling album, “When I Woke” that produced the hit single “Send Me On My Way” that found them on the Billboard Top 100 charts. Read on to learn more about the new sound that will define Uprooted from Rusted Root, which includes a lot more female vocals. We also touched on how their songs are part of so many soundtracks from films and television, which has garnered them some unexpected new fans. Asking him to describe the music, Glabicki came up with a one-word answer … unique. So make your plans for a musically unique experience in one of the most beautiful outdoor settings in the region. Uprooted will perform slopeside at Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville on Friday evening, June 29 with opening act Funktional Flow. Tickets for Friday’s concert are $25 advance (through June 17th) or $35 at the gate. Ellicottville’s Summer Music Festival will also feature a live performance by DENNIS DEYOUNG: THE MUSIC OF STYX on Saturday, June 30th, and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday, July 1st. All ticket pricing and purchases can be made through www.ellicottvilleny.com, at area Wegmans, or by calling 1-800-349-9099.

HULICK: Uprooted sounds very interesting. You will be doing new arrangements of Rusted Root songs? GLABICKI: Yes. We’re taking it to new places … some experimental stuff, some different takes on the old material, as well as playing three or four new songs from our album we are working on. HULICK: While doing new arrangements of the older material, have you found a new or different meaning of the song that you may have missed in the original version? GLABICKI: Yes. I think what happens is it becomes a more uplifting experience this way. I think with some of the older Rusted Root versions there were more bells and whistles happening … and doing new arrangements breaks down a new meaning of the song. It’s a more emotional impact. HULICK: Do you have a name for the new album? GLABICKI: Not yet. HULICK: There are several band mates of the most recent members of Rusted Root that have joined you in this new project that are touring with you I read. GLABICKI: You are right. We have Dirk Miller on guitar, Bobby Schenk on bass, Zil Fessler on drums and Daisie Ghosts Flower on vocals. HULICK: I heard you were going to have more female vocals involved in Uprooted. GLABICKI: Yes. Eventually we are going to get Emily Victoria from New York City. She will be coming in and singing with us at the Ellicottville show. On the new album we are putting both Daisie and Emily on together, and maybe even some more female singers just to get more of a layered impact with the vocals. Some songs will be presented as the group singing it and some will be the individual characters … so more of that will be going on. HULICK: Who came up with the name “Uprooted”? GLABICKI: That was me. I did an acoustic CD or EP about 15 years ago of different Rusted Root songs … just me on my guitar … just in my bedroom kind of thing, and I called it “Uprooted”. So when it came time to do this new project, I thought let’s use the same name. HULICK: Do you write all your own material? GLABICKI: Mostly we do. HULICK: How do you write? Do you set time aside to do that or just whenever it happens? GLABICKI: Whenever it happens … I’ll just stop and write … which isn’t great for relationships. (laughs) HULICK: Your music has been prominently featured in films like Ice Age, Matilda and Twister, as well as television shows like Ally McBeal, Chuck and Charmed. I think now-a-days especially it seems that music is so much a part of the film or show. GLABICKI: You’re right. It’s funny … for example the movie Ice Age … kids grew up listening to our music in the film and now we have kids coming to our shows and they like our music. To them we’re huge rock stars … (laughs) … and that’s kind of fun.

ART IN THE WILDS

Artistic Culture and Talent Convene in a Natural Setting Kane, Pennsylvania’s annual Juried Fine Arts Show & Exhibit showcases Inspiration in Many Forms By Dash Hegeman MIKE WEISHAN www.mrweishanphotography.com

DAWN JOHNSON www.coolauntdesigns.com

When you think of areas with an established art scene, Kane, Pennsylvania might not be on your list of locations. But if that is the case, you’d be overlooking an area that is rich with both artistic culture and talent. One of the reasons for the influence of art in Kane is the Art in the Wilds juried fine arts show. Now entering its 12th year, Art in the Wilds is a showcase event for creative minds throughout the region to display and sell their wares. Art in the Wilds will take place June 23-24 from 10am-5pm (rain or shine). And while the event has grown in size and popularity every year, the intent has remained the same since day 1: to draw people to Kane to show them why people are inspired to live in the region. This year, Courtney Mealy is taking the reigns as the Marketing Director for Art in the Wilds. Her duties include advertising and promoting the event along with the help of the event committee - a group of volunteers who help to plan, manage and promote the event. “I have been an attendee of Art in the Wild for the past several years and have wanted to get more involved,” said Mealy. “I have worked for several arts organizations and consulted with artists in the past and I wanted to offer my insight to this region’s arts and cultural scene.” On top of the normal traditional advertising efforts, this year Mealy has created an Instagram page for Art in the Wilds. You can check it out at @artinthewilds to get a preview of what to expect at the event. And to make things easier for both artists and patrons, she has started a “Festival Friday Tips” as a way of giving advice on how artists can set up their booth and market their artwork. Additionally, on the patron side, the tips offered include advice such as: “no dogs in Evergreen Park due to borough regulations.” Mealy mentioned that she is also planning to start a page on Art In the Wild’s website where some of this content can be stored and viewed by anyone. Choosing the participating artists has become an easier-said-than-done process that is led by a juried system. “We are looking for quality fine art and fine craft, especially work that highlights the best of our region,” said Mealy. “We work to provide a balanced show with a variety of media and artists with a wide range of price points. We have several regional artists, art educators, and individuals associated with arts organizations review each application. Our jurors typically spend over 15 hours each reviewing images, artist statements, websites and much more to determine who will be in each year’s show. This year we had our largest turnout for applicants - 62! From that 62, the jurors chose 40 artists to participate in this year’s event. Artists are welcome to apply year to year and we always accept new artists. We like to have a mix of returning artists with those who are new. This way it keeps the event fun and ever changing.” Some of the talent you will see at this year’s Art In the Wilds includes: DAWN JOHNSON (2017 Best of Show-2D): Dawn is a past AIW artist who used to create jewelry, then a few years ago surprised everyone and changed her medium! Her paintings are a “combination of impressions from the world around us and my need for self-expression.” A statement on her website (www.coolauntdesigns.com) reads: “My paintings reflect the fascination of Earth’s landscapes. My paintings capture abstract thoughts and ideas using color, as well as organic shape and form.” Dawn works with acrylic paint, watercolor and her most recent passion, Alcohol Inks. She explains, “Alcohol inks are solid based dyes with an alcohol base which makes them indelible and moisture resistant. They are transparent and highly saturated with pigment which gives them their bold and intense color.” If you noticed the name of her website, you may be wondering, “Cool Aunt?” … Dawn explains, “When I first started selling my art I called myself ‘Designs by Dawn.’ I found, however, that there are many websites currently using this. In addition, sites using the name ‘Dawn Johnson’ are also very common. To avoid confusion, I wanted a more creative name.

During a show my niece came from college for the weekend to assist me. When she was heading back to school she said she couldn’t wait to show her friends the items her ‘cool aunt’ had made … thus, ‘Cool Aunt Designs’ was born.” MIKE WEISHAN (Nature Photography): Mike Weishan is a first-time AIW artist from Cattaraugus, NY, showing his fine art nature photography. A tour of his website (www.mrweishanphotography.com) will lead you to a diverse selection of photographs, which, according to Mike, “reflect my personal view of our natural world. The subjects and colors of my photographs can help create a mood in any room at home or work by giving your room a refreshing quality, providing a tranquil psychological impact, establishing a mood of happiness and optimism, stimulating creativity, creating excitement, or creating a feeling of sophistication.” Mike became interested in photography during high school, serving as the photographer for the school newspaper, further developing that interest after military service through a correspondence course. “I established ‘Images by Michael’, my home-based photography business in 1996, and continued to develop my skills through workshops, seminars, publications and my association with other professionals.” At the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, Mike volunteers as a photo archivist. His photographs have been exhibited in the Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University, the Center Gallery at Jamestown Community College, the Cattaraugus County Arts Council (solo show), the Surrounding Gallery in Westfield, Glass Arts Gallery in Mayville, and at several businesses. This year, he will add Kane’s Art In the Wilds to his impressive list of exhibits. Other key artists to keep an eye out for: father and son duo Roland and Geno Boni (Mudslide Pottery), Leslie Halaby-Moore (chain maille jewelry), Gregg Kristophel (functional woodworker), Debbie Penley (handcrafted felt sculptures), Karen Fitzpatrick (stained glass), and Diane Castle-Babcock (linoleum block printing), just to name a few. Find the full list of participating artists at www.artinthewilds.org/2018-artists “This wonderful art show would not be possible without the support of our generous community-minded sponsors,” said Julie Cleland, President of Art In the Wilds. “Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Kane Community Development Foundation, UMPC Kane, Zook Motors, County National Bank, Highlander Energy and Northwest Bank.” One of the goals of an event like Art in the Wilds is to inspire, and so it is very fitting that there is a Student Art Exhibit & Competition component to Art in the Wilds. Now entering its fourth year, the decision to start the competition was made as a way of establishing a highend annual student show in Kane. “We invited 22 high school art teachers in McKean and our five contiguous counties to engage student participation,” Mealy said. “The show continues to grow with the amazing talent of high school artists of our region.” Pre-registered students will drop off their artwork on Saturday at the start of Art in the Wilds, where the submissions will be judged and open to the public by 1pm. The student show will also be open all day on Sunday. At 3:30pm on Sunday, the student artists will gather for photos and the awards ceremony. Schools participating in this year’s event include: Austin and Oswayo-Valley from Potter County; Kane, Bradford, Port Allegany, and Otto-Eldred from McKean County; Ridgway from Elk County, and Sheffield from Warren County. So mark your calendars and make plans to visit Kane, Pennsylvania June 23-24. Come see this talented collection of artists and experience what the people of Kane have known for quite some time - that Art in the Wilds is a spectacular representation of the beauty that is abundant in Kane.

LI B AT I O N BREAKDOW N: THERE ARE PLENTY OF O P T I O N S TO EX P L O RE By Spencer Timkey There’s something to be said about drinking local. Instead of the same old light beers from the powerhouse beer companies, more often than not as of late we gravitate towards the craft beer, wine or liquor. Being able to shake the hand of the brewer or winemaker plays into the experience. Seeing how the process plays out, the materials used and the work that goes in gives us an appreciation for our libations. In the past decade, craft breweries, wineries and distilleries have opened in droves across the country. Our region is no different. With a sense of pride, you can tell someone in Florida that Southern Tier is brewed not far from where you live, or that you frequent Ellicottville Brewing Company for dinner. There are plenty of options for you to explore - here are a few of our favorites … ELLICOTTVILLE BREWING COMPANY - The work continues on EBC’s Little Valley bottling facility, with major progress being made every day. They’ll be commissioning by the end of May and brewing by June. While the Pub won’t be open until the Fall, the facility will be gearing up for production. And EBC’s Bemus Point location is up and running, with a brand new summer menu. If you haven’t already, try EBC’s Somethin’ Hazee - it’s an unfiltered IPA sold in 4-packs of cans, and it’s the perfect complement to any summer night. STEELBOUND BREWERY - Ellicottville’s newest brewery and distillery is up and running on the corner of Routes 219 and 242, and owner Bill Bursee and his crew are firing on all cylinders. (Writer’s note: My fiancee and I went to Steelbound for dinner last week - the pizza is really good, and we ordered two separate flites of beer, which were also stellar!) Steelbound’s kitchen focuses on bringing in fresh ingredients every day, and the stage is ready to host live entertainment. Keep an eye out for the patio build, so you can enjoy many a summer nights outside. And on Tuesdays, Steelbound is offering a family style buffet that will change every week. The menus are printed on stock paper - not because they weren’t done yet, but because Bursee wants to keep the menu fresh. ELLICOTTVILLE DISTILLERY - Owner Bryan Scharf, an Ellicottville native, has done incredible work since opening the Distillery a little over a year ago. Located off the beaten path, it’s a chance for you to escape the (oft-times) craziness of town and relax in a calm, comfortable atmosphere. Bryan’s newest creation is Honey Spirit, which is his take on rum. Serving NY craft beers and wines for those that aren’t in the spirit for spirits, you can sit and chat with Bryan about the barreling and distilling process (all of which is open for you to look at.) The bourbon is almost 8-months-old, and Bryan won’t open it until the 2-year mark - but when he does, he’ll have a bourbon club where you can put your name on a barrel and enjoy it anytime. Open on Saturdays and Sundays, the Ellicottville Distillery is an awesome change of pace with plenty of room, a relaxing atmosphere and great views. Find them on Facebook at The Ellicottville Distillery. WINERY OF ELLICOTTVILLE - The Winery of Ellicottville will ramp up for the summer with the release of its 2016 pinot noir and some recently-released 2017 vintages. By mid-summer, they hope to release a higher-sugar late harvest riesling and also have a batch of cider fermenting currently. Look for the return or the Winery’s August wine club, as well as some small plate food and wine pairings throughout the month of June. Stop by and pick up a bottle of their Red, White and Blue, and follow them on Facebook for updates and specials. FOUR MILE BREWING COMPANY - Olean’s Four Mile Brewing, in nearby Olean, has added another go-to spot for anyone in the area. Their beers have permeated western New York and Pennsylvania, and the IPA is a personal favorite. Four Mile has a full kitchen, outdoor seating and tons of great stuff coming up in the next few months. Check out the Enchanted Mountain Brewfest on July 14, as well as a bocce tournament (June 2) and Beer Mile (with Good Times of Olean, July 4). Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for Four Mile taps at your favorite watering hole, or get them right at the source. Four Mile is located at 202 East Green Street in Olean, or find them on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. FLICKERWOOD WINE CELLARS - Located in the heart of Kinzua Country in northwest Pennsylvania, Flickerwood Wine Cellars is celebrating their 18th year of family owned and operated business. When we say family, we mean it - owner Sue Zampogna runs the books, her daughter does the marketing, and her husband and son double duty as winemakers and musicians for Friday and Saturday’s “Wine Down.” The number of wineries in Pennsylvania has exploded in the past few years - when Flickerwood opened, there were 56. Now there are close to 300! But the Zampogna family has established itself as one of the premier winemakers in the state, partnering with places like Sprague’s to make their Maple Chardonnay. And new for this year is the “Outdoor Series” - four different wines that Flickerwood will put in cans, so you can enjoy it anywhere you go. Every Wednesday they have pasta night, where everything is homemade from family recipes. If the draw of homemade wine isn’t enough to get you to Flickerwood, remember every person in there has a vested interest in its success, so you’ll be getting the best experience whenever you go.

COMFORTABLE WITH CLASS With a beautifully renovated space and an emphasis on locally-sourced foods, Steelbound aims to provide a comfortable, affordable atmosphere and establish itself as an Ellicottville mainstay Steelbound Brewery & Distillery doesn’t have a head brewer. Their recently renovated building, with a beautifully industrial interior, wasn’t planned by a designer. The owner got his start in contracting, while one of the brewers is a retired schoolteacher. And the freezer in the kitchen? Tiny and upright, housing mainly ice cream. Steelbound Brewery & Distillery doesn’t have a head brewer — they have two, which spreads the work out and allows the creativity to flow. A designer wasn’t brought on to plan the layout, because the owner, Bill Bursee, did it himself. That contractor background? It helped Bursee put it all together, while a schoolteacher’s passion project blossomed into a new career. And Steebound doesn’t need massive, industrial restaurant freezers — the food is all fresh. Traveling in and out of Ellicottville, you’ve most certainly seen the work being done on the corner where Route 219 meets 242. Steelbound, which is now open, aims to offer a comfortable, affordable experience — complete with the region’s freshest foods and newest beers. “Bill is originally from Buffalo, and we met while living in Springville,” Tim Hooker, one of the brewers (and aforementioned schoolteacher), told me. “We originally wanted to open a distillery, but the brewery/restaurant kind of just happened.” Bursee’s Buffalo heritage is evident in the theme of the place. The undersides of awnings are lined with old maps of the city, and production will begin soon on the Allentown Pale Ale and Kaisertown Hefeweizen. Steelbound’s chef will bring his product in from local spots like Ford Brother’s (of Ashford) and Wendel’s Poultry Farm (of East Concord), as well as other local farmers. “One of the main things we’re trying to focus on is having high-quality, fresh food that supports the local community,” Hooker said. “We want to be careful about how we choose the food we’ll ultimately serve — that all plays into the experience. When someone comes in and has a burger and a beer for $13 and can enjoy the ambience of the place, that’s the scene we’re going for.” Legal complications led Bursee and Hooker to change the original name of Stillhouse to Steelbound - while they would have won that battle, they didn’t want the drawn-out headache. “There’s a lot of steel in this industry,” Hooker said. “We’re drawing on the name to convey a sense of community amongst our workers. We are bound together like steel. From the brewers, to the kitchen staff, to servers/bartenders and ownership, we’re all one team. We plan on bringing the kitchen staff into the brewery for a few days to learn the process, and vice versa. Everyone will know everyone else, get involved, and understand the amount of work that goes in to make a place successful.” The interior of Steelbound is gorgeous. A welcoming first floor with dining space and a bar leads to the stage, which is visible from the monstrous upstairs. (Writer’s note: Kane Miller of Olean’s Barnacle Brothers, who is a good friend, built the bars). Too often, live music in bars gets lost because you can’t see the band or the sound is muffled. An upstairs viewing area (complete with drop down screen) ensures you’ll always have a vantage point. Plus, it gives Steelbound the opportunity to host weddings, parties and other large get-togethers. “I’ve been with Bill longer than anybody,” Hooker said. “When he wanted to do this, he approached me and said ‘I want you to come brew for me.’ It’s been an unbelievable experience so far, and we can’t wait to see where it goes.” Steelbound Brewery & Distillery is now open at the corner of Route 219 and 242. Find them on Facebook at Steelbound Brewery & Distillery to see what they’ve got brewing, or head over to www.steelboundevl.com.

SPIRULINA: FRESHWATER SUPERFOOD! By Kristina Barlow, N.D., C.S.T.

Numerous saltwater and freshwater fish are consumed by humans all around the world for their provision of healthful Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Protein and other nutrients such as B12, Selenium, Phosphorous and more. Ocean nutrition gives these vertebrates and shellfish the qualities we are looking for nutritionally. Let’s bypass eating the fish and go straight to saltwater and freshwater plant foods - phytoplankton - for their powerful health benefits. Phytoplankton are absolutely fascinating as they produce half of our planet’s oxygen supply and absorb one-third of our global carbon dioxide output. These microscopic organisms are barely visible to the naked eye, yet form the fertile land of the oceans, feed the ocean’s wildlife and help the sustenance of human life. Mind-Blowing! TYPES OF PHYTOPLANKTON • Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) • Green algae • Yellow-green algae • Golden-brown algae • Diatoms • Cryptomonads • Euglenoids • Brown algae • Red algae Let’s take just ONE type of freshwater Phytoplankton - the blue-green algae - and explore the amazing benefits of consuming just one type of blue-green algae … SPIRULINA! TRAIL CENTRAL

GET OUTDOORS AND PLAY! By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau

National Get Outdoors Day is officially June 9, 2018, but in the Allegheny National Forest of northwestern, Pennsylvania, it is always Get Outdoors Day! Hiking trails invite you to explore on foot and kayak rentals put you on the water. In June, the mountain laurel begins to bloom, creating an amazing carpet of pink blossoms. The Forest turns a lush, mystical green. Villages and towns come alive with the sounds of music, laughter, and families having fun during the seasonal fairs and festivals.

Bring your own kayak or canoe, or rent one at Willow Bay, Bradford, PA.

WHERE’S THE WATER? As the days heat up, the glistening waters of the Allegheny Reservoir invite you in. Both the Allegheny Reservoir and the Allegheny River offer miles of on-water experiences. You can rent a kayak, canoe and other equipment at Willow Bay in Bradford, Pennsylvania. If you already have your own kayak or canoe, a full list of boat launches on the Allegheny River can be found at alleghenysite.com/category/boat-launches. If you need advice on purchasing a kayak or canoe, the experienced staff at Sportsman’s Outlet (500 Chestnut Street, Bradford, PA) are local outdoorsmen who can assist you in finding the right fit - both in size and in price. EXPLORE ON FOOT A favorite hiking trail for families is Timberdoodle Flats Interpretive Trail. This trail consists of two trail loops totaling 1.5 miles. The timberdoodle is the nickname of the American woodcock, one of the many birds you might get a glimpse of along the trail. The Woodcock Loop is marked with a yellow woodcock insignia and features 12 interpretive stops. The shorter Bluebird Trail features six interpretive stops and is suitable for wheelchairs, walking assistance equipment, or children in strollers. Timberdoodle trail is great for casual hikers, parents with children, and beginning birders. From Bradford, travel south on Rt. 219 to the intersection of Rt. 59, turn and travel west, then watch for the large trail sign which will mark trailhead parking.

ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOP 10 SKYWALKS For a great day outdoors, bring the family to Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. This free, day-use park is the home of the spectacular Kinzua Sky Walk one of the most fantastic hikes you will ever experience! The Kinzua Sky Walk is one of the world’s top 10 most scenic skywalks and viewpoints in the world according to The Culture Trip; U.K. Extending 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge at a height of 225 feet, the views from the skywalk of the surrounding Kinzua Gorge are stunning! First built in 1881, the Kinzua Viaduct was once the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world. In 2003, a tornado ripped through the valley and partially destroyed the historic viaduct, sending 11 of the 20 towers crashing to the valley floor. Using six of the viaduct’s steel towers, and the original railroad tracks from the surface of the historic structure, a new skywalk was created. Now the tracks lead the way to a partial glass observation deck from which you can view the fallen towers. “Walking the Tracks across the Sky” is a thrilling adventure.

WALK THE TRACKS ACROSS THE SKY! The Kinzua Sky Walk sits 225 feet high and extends 624 feet in the Kinzua Gorge.

The new Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center contains a wide variety of interactive displays, including a replica railroad car where you can sit and watch a film of what it was actually like to cross the original viaduct by steam engine. The Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway, which is the access road to the park, is a shared use road for bicyclists. This family friendly park also features picnic areas and a hiking trail to the bottom of the gorge. Kinzua Creek Trail: Not for the faint of heart, this challenging trail winds down the side of the Kinzua Gorge. At the bottom of the gorge you can view the fallen towers of the Kinzua Viaduct from a remarkable viewpoint. What looked small, when viewed from above, are

now gigantic steel towers. Huge concrete structures which once held the massive towers now stand empty.
