“It’s Nice to be Nice.” Eddie Szpaicher Golf Classic at Holiday Valley

@mclauss24

@thepatmorgran

By Spence Timkey “It’s nice to be nice.” Those are words we can all live by every day, right? Eddie Szpaicher, who left us too soon on January 2, 2012, personified these words. He was a man of the community, the prototypical rag-on-ya’ bartender, and a constant smiling face whenever you saw him around town. Big Ed is missed. When a community as tight knit as Ellicottville loses someone like Eddie, it rapidly comes together. So in the summer of ’12 when the 1st Annual took place, it was (and still remains) the largest tournament Holiday Valley has ever hosted - by a lot. Two packed-full flights saw over 250 people celebrate Eddie’s life and legacy. On Wednesday, July 12, 2017, Holiday Valley will again play host to the 6th Annual Eddie Szpaicher Memorial. “It’s interesting to see the different perspective of what town is when something like this happens,” said Brooke Szpaicher, one of three daughters who survive Eddie. “It’s more of a … family than a town. Everyone comes together and is so supportive. People come out of the woodwork! It’s awesome.”

14 MONROE STREET, ELLICOTTVILLE, NY

While golf can be considered a serious, stuffy game by some old schoolers, (writer’s note: golf is not this) the Eddie couples golf, drinks, friends and a celebration of life. I’ve missed one year of the tournament, and the other 5 have been a highlight of my summer. It’s exactly the type of event Eddie would love.

716.699.1055 WINERYOFELLICOT T VILLE.COM

“It’s definitely more about the golf, and the celebration,” said Trey Clauss, Eddie’s son-inlaw. “We’ve never had major corporate sponsors, so it’s incredible to say that we’ve raised and given away over $25,000 for the Eddie Szpaicher Scholarship Fund.” The scholarship, given to two graduating seniors of Ellicottville Central School, are $2,500 apiece. A significant contribution to any student heading to higher education. “Anybody can donate or be a hole sponsor, which are $100,” Trey said. “We keep the prizes to a minimum, because people aren’t playing to win. It’s a day of celebration.” There are two shotgun starts that you can play in - 8am and 1pm. The day starts with coffee and breakfast around 7am, and you can expect lunch at the turn before dinner that night. (Insider secret: playing in the early flight gives you plenty of time to hang by the pool until dinner starts.) “It’s so fun to see the old school meet the new school in terms of who Eddie knew,” Trey said. “You’ve got the guys he grew up with, went to school with and knew from early in his life. Then there’s the Ellicottville crew that knew him from the bar, from school functions and around town. All different walks of life come to this. And what’s really cool is that there are newer people each and every year - so you know that the people who’ve played love it and bring their friends.” Trey was quick to mention that without tournament organizer Jay Stoddard, it wouldn’t be what it is today. If you want more information on the tournament or to sign up, head to www.bigedgolf.com or their Facebook Page @Eddie Szpaicher Golf Classic. “It’s such a good day to celebrate Eddie,” Trey said. “People know that it’s a good time. And it is a good time.” (Read up on other local golf events in our FORE! GOLF section, page 19.)

One Weekend + Two Events = Summer Fun! Get down and dirty with the 6th annual Holiday Valley Mudslide Trail Run; Follow it up with Adventure Bound onthefly’s 2nd annual Ellicottville Paddle Festival By Brenda Perks

MUDSLIDE OBSTACLE TRAIL RUN Saturday, June 17 @ Holiday Valley

ELLICOTTVILLE PADDLE FESTIVAL Spruce Lake (Saturday) | Paddle Demo Center (Sunday)

Some of my fondest childhood memories include scavenger hunts in the woods behind our house, mud pies (without the worms), and constructing some of the most ridiculous obstacle courses made out of whatever useless (and sometimes rusty) old objects we could find hiding in the shed. It’s amazing that none of us ever ended up in the emergency room.

Once you’ve had your fair share of running, mud, and post-race party fun, head back up the Spruce chairlift for Round Two … Adventure Bound onthefly will have an entire fleet of kayaks and standup paddleboards (SUPS) lining the shore of Holiday Valley’s Spruce Lake that everyone is welcome to come demo … for FREE! Add in live music, Hawaiian BBQ, kids SUP races, and some really unique fitness classes, and you’ve got the makings of the 2nd annual Ellicottville Paddle Festival. It’s the perfect compliment to a full day of outdoor fun, and truly a Father’s Day weekend for the books! Let’s break it down for you …

Now all grown up, the thought of dirt under my fingernails may not be ideal on a 9-to-five day, but come the weekend, it is a much welcomed side effect if it’s a result of having fun under the sun in an event that harvests the complete opposite of staying clean. Move over adulting … it’s time to get dirty. At Holiday Valley, they encourage it! Only they pull out the hoses, turn that dirt into mud, then unleash upwards of 1,200 fun loving people to run the resort’s trails, tackling a multitude of obstacles along the way! Enter the 6th annual Mudslide Trail Run at Holiday Valley Resort, set for Saturday, June 17. No, they aren’t expecting you to climb your way over a barbed wire fence or somersault through a moving ring of fire. However, what you CAN expect are trails maintained for running, and sturdy, realistically conquerable obstacles built by the HV mountain crew - an attractive improvement from our childhood days of sketchy backyard contraptions. Yes. Running … this is a running event. But don’t let that intimidate you. As fun as this event is, you won’t even realize how far you’re legs have taken you. Two distance options are available, and both share a starting line at the top of the mountain. (Thankfully, the resort will be spinning the Spruce chairlift so you can save your energy for the real deal. The lift fee will be waived for race entrants; $5 for spectators.) Choose from the 3.5-mile course (piece of cake!), or for those feeling extra tough, opt for the 5.4-mile course which runs the same route but adds a bit of uphill running mid-way before looping back around. (You can view the course maps on Holiday Valley’s website.) Navigate through, over, and under 11 unique obstacles to the grand finale - a giant mudslide down lower Yodeler slope. Cross the finish line, claim your finisher’s medal, then head over to the HDK’s to rinse off all that mud! (Haven’t you always wanted to shower under a snow gun?)

Who: EVERYONE! You don’t have to be a Mudslide participant to attend Paddle Festival. However, Mudslide runners can ride the Spruce lift for free. ($5 for anyone else looking to hitch a ride up to Paddle Central.) When: Saturday, June 17 immediately following Holiday Valley’s Mudslide Trail Run from 2-7pm. The Adventure Bound crew is upping the ante this year with a 2nd day of paddling fun on Sunday, June 18 at their Demo Pond located just a couple miles north of the village … but we’ll get to that in just a minute. Music: Zach Carr and Jonah Krull of Tonawanda, NY will provide the entertainment for Saturday’s paddling adventures. The talented duo has performed across the Western New York region, playing covers of many different styles from pop/jazz to big band and swing music. Aside from being nominated as “Best Acoustic Act” of 2016 in ArtVoice Magazine, Zach Carr won “Best Male Vocalist” in ArtVoice’s 2016 “Best of Buffalo.” Yep … they’re pretty good! Food: You’ll need to re-fuel if you want ample paddling energy. Adventure Bound is bringing in a Hawaiian BBQ food truck to serve up delicious Hawaiian chicken BBQ, crispy shrimp with Katsu sauce, and BBQ short ribs - that should get your chops watering. SUP Yoga: Groove Health & Fitness instructors will offer demonstrations and fitness sessions on the water. Not to worry … SUP boards use Advanced Rocker Construction (ARC) for superior performance and stability, making yoga on the water a unique combination that’s not as difficult as you may think. Give it a try!

Bonus fun: Costumes are encouraged! Not only will the Mudslide award the 3 overall fastest males and females, prizes will also be given to the most creative costumes. And for the wee ones, a Mini Mudslide features an easy half mile with its own set of mini obstacles, making this an event that the entire family can get it on. And after all that energy you’ve exhausted, reward yourself with extra fun at the post-race party on the Champagne Sundeck at Yodeler Lodge. Live DJ, games, dogs on the grill, and plenty of liquid refreshments to wash it all down. A Vendor Village will spotlight many of the local shops, and no doubt you’ll have plenty of stories from your muddy experience to share with fellow racers.

New Release: The highlight of this year’s Paddle Festival is the introduction of a new line of inflatable SUPs from the Ellicottville-based business, SUPonthefly (an affiliate of Adventure Bound onthefly.) According to John Rounds, owner, “SUPonthefly has spent two years testing and producing boards with unique stability and design requirements to meet the needs of the adventure paddler and fly fishing community. This year’s line will feature a retractable box that allows the center fin to automatically retract in shallow water or when bumping up against rocks in a river.” Pretty cool, right? SUPonthefly will be one of the only manufacturers in the world to feature this technology.

So if you regularly find yourself reminiscing about the good ‘ol days playing in the dirt, or daydreaming about being the next American Ninja Warrior, you’ll want to sign up for this year’s Holiday Valley Mudslide. We promise - hero status is easily attainable in an event like this, no matter what your age or skill level.

Sunday: If you can’t make it out to Spruce Lake on Saturday (or even if you can and you want more, more, more!), head to Adventure Bound’s Demo Pond on Sunday. They’ll keep the party going with more paddling, more live music and more fun! Pack yourself a little picnic, bring your chair or blanket, and set up from 10am-3pm. Molly and the Lavender Kings are returning this year to provide their folk/bluegrass sound, and you can count on plenty of water activities and good conversation to go around. (AB’s Demo Pond is located just a couple miles from downtown. Travel Route 219 north past Tim Horton’s; you’ll see the pond on your left.)

Giving Back: A portion of the proceeds from this year’s Mudslide will benefit Jim Kelly’s Hunter’s Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to giving hope through education and awareness, research, and family care for Krabbe, Leukodystrophies, and Newborn Screening. Talk about running for fun and for a good cause! For full details including pre-registration, packet pick-up, lodging specials and more, head to www.holidayvalley.com or call 716-699-2345.

Father’s Day Weekend 2017 will be a tough one to top. If your plans find you elsewhere, keep in mind that Adventure Bound is offering affordable weekend SUP and kayak rentals at their new SUP/kayak concession at Spruce Lake ... Every weekend ... All summer! Click over to adventureboundonthefly.com for details including rates and advance reservations.

“SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL” Grand Funk Railroad returns to Western New York, this time to headline Ellicottville’s Summer Music Festival

A Conversation with DON BREWER HULICK: You’ll be playing the Ellicottville Summer Music Festival this year on Sunday, July 2 on the foothills of the slopes at Holiday Valley. BREWER: Yes! We are really looking forward to this show. We drove through that ski village on our way to a show at the Seneca Casino a few years back and it was just so beautiful, so we are excited to be able to play outdoors in such a remarkable place. HULICK: You’ve been in the business for over four decades and your music is played on classic rock stations to this day. BREWER: Yes, we’re celebrating 48 years this year … HULICK: Did you ever think you would be at this point all these years later? BREWER: I never dreamed this. All you wanted to do back then was to make a hit record and go for a couple years. We were fortunate to have a great career. Even back in the 70’s and then continuing into the 80’s and then we reunited in the 90’s and we’ve been going ever since. It’s pretty amazing. I love the fact that I can go out on the stage and see three or four generations of people that know the words to our songs. HULICK: There is a lot of music history in the band, as far as the newer members. They’ve played with KISS, Michael Bolton, Meatloaf, Bob Seger … BREWER: (laughs) And 38 Special.

......................... Sunday, July 2 | Slopeside @ Holiday Valley By Melanie Hulick If you’re a fan of classic rock music, then you’re a fan of Grand Funk Railroad. The five piece band that made it big in the 1970’s is a staple on any classic rock radio station you listen to. Formed in 1969 in Flint, Michigan, GFR is celebrating their 48th year in the business and will be playing slopeside at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville on Sunday, July 2 as part of the village’s annual Summer Music Festival. I recently caught up with original member and singer/drummer, Don Brewer, from his home in Florida, to talk about the festival, the band and the music. I had interviewed Brewer a few years ago before one of their performances that had them playing in Western New York in a very snowy January, to which he had asked if I could get rid of that white stuff before they got here. Although I was not able to make good on that request then, I have assured him that this time around he should be fine … I hope. That made him think twice before he chuckled and said, “That’s a joke, right?” With the backing of 13 gold records, 10 platinum records, two #1 singles and their signature driving beat, the band still tours and packs them in wherever they play. In July of 2011 over 25,000 showed up to “party down” with this “American Band” at the Molson Canal Series Concert in Tonawanda, which Brewer recalled as being one of the best shows they’ve played. The current band consists of Brewer, bassist and original member Mel Schacher, singer Max Carl, lead guitarist Bruce Kulick, and keyboardist Tim Cashion … “all of who have been with GFR since 2000,” said Brewer. Asking what we can expect from their upcoming show, Brewer said, “I like to say we play the hits plus. We do play some new stuff, but we really concentrate on the hits like “American Band”, “Locomotion”, “Some Kind of Wonderful”, “I’m Your Captain” … we give the audience what they’re there for … the hits.”

HULICK: How do you go from KISS to Michael Bolton? That’s incredible! BREWER: (laughs) We got a great bunch of guys. We’ve had the same group since 2000, so we’re going into our 17th year this year. It’s a great cast of characters, as I like to say. It’s a lot of fun. We all get along and it’s a talented bunch of people. HULICK: You got started in music at a very young age. BREWER: Yes, I had my first band, The Red Devils, when I was 12. We played at the elementary school gymnasium at lunch time. (laughs) My dad was a former drummer and my mother was a former dance instructor, so they were totally into me getting involved in music. My sister went on to be a dancer on Broadway. So I had all the support I needed. It was with my second band, The Jazzmasters, that I started playing the drums and singing at the same time, which made me one of a few who did that. We had some regional success with that band and from that we took me and Mark Farner, and when we enlisted Mel Schacher we became Grand Funk Railroad. HULICK: How did you come up with the name? BREWER: There’s a railroad in Michigan called the Grand Trunk Western Railroad that, as we were growing up waiting for the train to pass, you kept reading Grand Trunk Western Railroad, and in the 1960’s this new music came along called funk. So we thought we’d do a play on words and call us Grand Funk Railroad rather than Grand Trunk. Back then it was a little risqué, but nobody thinks much about it today. Back then people would ask, “What did you say the name was?” People thought you were saying the F bomb. It was a powerful name back then because you combined the use of funk music with the sound of a train. HULICK: That constant beat a train makes as it passes you on the tracks … BREWER: Right. Exactly. HULICK: Who were your musical influences? BREWER: There have been tons of them. As far as the drummers I was influenced by, I would have to say Dino Danelli from the Rascals, Mitch Mitchell from Hendrix’s band and Ginger Baker from Cream. HULICK: What’s your favorite song to do live? BREWER: Well I really get a kick out of doing “Some Kind Of Wonderful”. A lot of times I’ll see little kids on their grandparent’s shoulders singing the words to the song. It’s so adorable and you think to yourself … Oh my God, that little kid knows the words to “Some Kind Of Wonderful”! I think that’s just awesome!

Happy Birthday Gowanda Harley-Davidson!

A family celebrates an American Dream 70 Years Strong, boasting Motorcycles and Made-in-America products By Caitlin Croft

Birthday Bash: Join the festivities of GHD’s 70th on 7 / 7 / 2017 with live music, food & bikes ... “That’s America!”

So much has changed over the past 70 years - from the way we listen to music to how we communicate. But one thing has always stayed the same … Motorcycles. Yes, they have evolved with technology and motorsport progression, but the true essence of the motorcycle and lifestyle that comes with it has remained constant. In 1947, John S. Reid thought he would take a gamble on a career selling and repairing motorcycles. This was the inception of Gowanda Harley-Davidson (GHD). I recently had the opportunity to speak with his daughter, Paula Rosen, current President and part owner of GHD. Rosen owns the business in conjunction with her brother, Marty Reid. “My father had ten children with our mother (Madeleine Reid) so he was always holding down as many jobs as he could. In his spare time dad was somewhere fixing and tinkering with motorcycles; it only made sense that his dream would be to open a Harley-Davidson store.” Seventy years later and the doors are still open. The business holds the same values as when it started - it’s all about family at GHD. “We have customers who are 2nd or 3rd generation riders coming into our store,” said Rosen. “That’s very humbling.” I asked Rosen, “Why Harley-Davidson? Why not Indian or one of the other major brands at the time?” Her response: “That’s America … it’s what dad always said.” And it is this reply from Rosen that got me thinking … there are so many timeless symbols associated with the United States of America, but what brand evokes more patriotism across the entirety of the USA? Mr. Reid was right. I cannot think of a better example. Over the years, six of the 10 children have run the dealership, and grandkids (and even great-grandkids) have worked there as well. “We have always carried motorcycle accessories - everything from helmets to riding jackets - but over the recent years there has been such an expansion of choices. It has been neat to see how many new product lines are coming out; you can get anything and everything Harley-Davidson now,” said Rosen. General Merchandise Manager, Laura Coppola, elaborated on the shop’s merchandise offerings. “The Show Room was expanded about ten years ago, which has allowed us to increase the number of products we carry,” she said. “New products are constantly coming onto the market and riding gear has come a long way over the years. It has evolved to be more functional, and women’s lines have gotten trendier. We carry everything you need head-to-toe and for every weather condition mother nature throws our way!” One of the unique product lines they offer is the Harley-Davidson Wiley-X Eyewear, which is available in prescription and progression lenses. “We carry an ample selection of textile jackets, leather jackets, performance boots and clothing, along with HarleyDavidson gifts and household items,” Coppola said. In February, GHD met with the owner of the Made-in-America store about becoming a

‘store-in-store’ location. “Essentially, we have dedicated a section of our store to carrying Made-in-America products,” Coppola explained. “It fits right in with Reid’s slogan: ‘That’s America’.” “People are just starting to catch on,” continued Coppola, “and the community and customers have embraced and praised the dealership for adding this great new line of items.” Current items in stock include a line of Military Branch ballcaps, American flags, the All-American grill (which is made in Elma, NY) and various home and gardening tools. They also stock a plethora of grilling accessories you may need to go from Sunday ride to Sunday BBQ in a flash. Because Coppola is constantly changing it up, she encourages you to stop by anytime you are in the area. On the Motorcycle end, GHD is really excited for the new engine by Harley-Davidson the Milwaukee-Eight, which is part of the the ninth generation of its venerable Big Twin. “It is named in honor of its birthplace and its number of valves - twice as many as the Twin Cam motor,” Delaney Peters tells me. Peters is the Director of Marketing for GHD. “Harley-Davidson says the new engine platform provides faster throttle response, more torque, better sound, improved fuel economy and a smoother ride.” In celebration of its 70th anniversary, Gowanda Harley-Davidson is throwing a Birthday Bash: The Year of 7s 1947-2017. The party (fittingly scheduled for 7/7/2017) will be an event for the books, and will run from 11:30am to 10pm at the store’s location in Gowanda, rain or shine. Free hot dogs and soda pop will be served up until 1pm, and live music from five local bands will entertain crowds the entire time. “Musical talent and bikes seem to go hand-in-hand, and we’ve decided to hire only bands that have customers in them,” said Peters. This event will be even more exciting with the addition of a food and beer tent operated by Villaggio of Ellicottville, NY. As Peters explained, “After seeing the level of class they put forth in the Hollywood Happening VIP tent in 2016 along with their fun loving attitudes, it was clear they would be a good fit for an event of this caliber.” “It is going to be a pleasure to celebrate the past 70 years in honor of our founder’s tradition and to thank the customers who have supported us all these years,” Coppola said. “We’re looking forward to the next 70 years of serving our amazing customers with the same enthusiastic, passionate service,” Rosen says. The passion and excitement that the GHD staff has for what they do is remarkable. This Birthday Bash is sure to be fun for all. If you cannot make it to the store for the big bash, be sure to stop in another time and check out the shop. I am sure you will not be disappointed, as anyone who walks in leaves as family.

Gowanda Harley-Davidson is located at 2535 Zoar Road, Gowanda, NY 14070

TRAIL CENTRAL

GET OUTDOORS AND PLAY! By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau

National Get Outdoors Day is officially June 10, 2017, but in the Allegheny National Forest of northwestern Pennsylvania, it is always … Get Outdoors Day! Hiking trails invite you to explore on foot, and kayak rentals put you on the water. In June, the mountain laurel begins to bloom, creating an amazing carpet of pink blossoms. The Forest turns a lush, mystical green, and villages and towns come alive with the sounds of music, laughter, and families having fun during the seasonal fairs and festivals. NATIONAL GET OUTDOORS DAY In the Allegheny National Forest Region of Pennsylvania, every day is GET OUTDOORS DAY!

In the Allegheny National Forest, at the Beaver Meadows Recreation Area near Marienville, PA on June 10 from 9am-3pm, National Outdoors Day will be celebrated. Enjoy a free, fun-filled day of family activities including kayaking, hiking, fishing, campfire building, yoga and other outdoor fun! Walk, talk and paddle with the U.S. Forest Service Rangers. Bring a picnic lunch and spend the day outdoors. Directions: from the center of Marienville, take North Forest Street four miles north; Beaver Meadows Road is on the right. For more information please call the park office at 877-444-6777.

WHERE’S THE WATER?

Enjoy the beauty of nature on foot or by bicycle. There are many trails to explore.

As the days heat up, the glistening waters of the Allegheny Reservoir invite you in. Both the Allegheny Reservoir and the Allegheny River offer miles of on-water experiences. You can rent a kayak, canoe and other equipment at Willow Bay and put in the water right from their boat launch. If you already have your own kayak or canoe, a full list of boat launches on the Allegheny River can be found at alleghenysite.com/category/boatlaunches. If you need advice on purchasing a kayak or canoe, the experienced staff at Sportsman’s Outlet (500 Chestnut Street, Bradford, PA) are local outdoorsmen who can assist you in finding the right fit - both in size and in price. They also offer a wide selection of fishing equipment, and you can purchase a 1, 3 or 7-day tourism fishing license at their shop. Head to shopsportsmansoutlet.com.

EXPLORE ON FOOT A favorite hiking trail for families is the Timberdoodle Flats Interpretive Trail. This trail consists of two trail loops totaling 1.5 miles. The timberdoodle is the nickname of the American woodcock, one of the many birds you might get a glimpse of along the trail. The Woodcock Loop is marked with a yellow woodcock insignia and features 12 interpretive stops. The shorter Bluebird Trail features six interpretive stops and is suitable for wheelchairs, walking assistance equipment, or children in strollers. Timberdoodle Trail is great for casual hikers, parents with children, and beginning birders. From Bradford, travel south on Rt. 219 to the intersection of Rt. 59, turn and travel west, then watch for the large trail sign which will mark trailhead parking.

KINZUA SKY WALK For a great day outdoors, bring the family to Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, PA. This free, day-use park is the home of the spectacular Kinzua Sky Walk. One of the most fantastic hikes you will ever experience is a stroll on the amazing Kinzua Sky Walk, which has been labeled as one of the world’s top 10 most scenic skywalks and viewpoints in the world according to The Culture Trip-U.K. Extending 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge at a height of 225 feet, the views from the skywalk of the surrounding Kinzua Gorge are stunning. First built in 1881, the Kinzua Viaduct was once the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world. In 2003, a tornado ripped through the valley and partially destroyed the historic viaduct, sending 11 of the 20 towers crashing to the valley floor. Using six of the viaduct’s steel towers and the original railroad tracks from the surface of the historic structure, a new skywalk was created. Now the tracks lead the way to a partial glass observation deck from which you can view the fallen towers. “Walking the Tracks across the Sky” is a thrilling adventure. The new Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center contains a wide variety of interactive displays, including a replica railroad car where you can sit and watch a film of what it was actually like to cross the original viaduct by steam engine. The Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway, which is the access road to the park, is a shared use road for bicyclists. This family friendly park also features picnic areas and a hiking trail to the bottom of the gorge.

THE SUMMER LOCAL ~ JUNE 2017 ... Page 15

KINZUA CREEK TRAIL Not for the faint of heart, this challenging trail winds down the side of the Kinzua Gorge. At the bottom of the gorge you can view the fallen towers of the Kinzua Viaduct from a remarkable viewpoint. What looked small, when viewed from above, are now gigantic steel towers. Huge concrete structures which once held the massive towers now stand empty. Access to the trail is from the pathway between the skywalk and the wooden overlook at the Kinzua Bridge State Park. This is a difficult trail and sturdy hiking boots should be worn, even more challenging than the hike down, is the hike back up. Open daily from 8am to sunset, the park is located at 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, PA. The Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center is open from 8-6pm. ART IN THE WILDS

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN ART, INSPIRATION, NATURE

Kane’s Evergreen Park sets the stage for another spectacular year of artist displays, live demonstrations, music and more By Anjanette Nicolazzo Are you ready for a small-town festival that will knock your socks off? Look no further than a short drive to Kane, PA for the 11th annual Art in the Wilds juried fine arts show. Taking place June 24-25, Art in the Wilds boasts a spectacular array of over 35 fine art vendors, a student art show, live artist demonstrations, music, and food! “It feels fantastic, and a bit unbelievable to be in our 11th year,” said Julie Cleland, President of Art in the Wilds. “Our show differs from the rest due to our beautiful venue, the genuine hospitality of our volunteers, and of course, the great art and great food!” Located in the heart of Kane’s stunning Evergreen Park, admission and parking for the event are free. The venue lends an ideal setting to browse and purchase a variety of art - from acrylic, oil, and watercolor painting, to drawing, pastels, woodturning and woodworking, to jewelry, photography, ceramics, glass, fiber arts, leather, metal sculpture and more. In order to ensure only the highest-quality art to the show, all vendors must participate in a jurying process. Those interested apply almost a year in advance, sending samples and

photos of the work and booth presentations. The art is then juried and selected by a panel of experts based on overall impact, originality, presentation, design, and a mastering of their chosen technique. Marilyn Blackmore, Executive Director of Art in the Wilds, continues to be amazed yearby-year at the quality of art they receive for the jurying process. “With five new artists, it’s tough to determine who I’m most excited to see!” said Blackmore. “This year, I think I’m excited to see Juliane Gorman from Gibsonia, PA, who will be demonstrating at her booth, and showing us how she makes whimsical felted hats.” She continued, “Dawn Johnson, who is a native of Kane but living in Monroeville, surprised us this year by completely changing her media from jewelry to ink on synthetic paper. Her photos look awesome; can’t wait to see her new pieces.” With that being said, let’s learn a little more about Gorman, Johnson, and a few other new artists who will be appearing at this year’s show ...

FELTING, HATS

PAINTING, INK AND WATERCOLOR

WOOD/RESIN, PENS

Energized by the natural world, fairy tales, and fine art, Gorman creates wearable art pieces inspired by ice caverns, flying birds, and Gustav Klimt’s paintings. Yet, she strives to make hats that are useful, comfortable, and flattering for the wearer. In her own words, wool is lightweight, water-resistant, and insulating - truly a magical fiber!

Dawn Johnson surprised the jurying board this year by changing her media from jewelry to ink on synthetic paper. The inks are applied using both traditional and nontraditional methods and tools.

Hailing out of Rimersburg, PA, Horner has been working with wood since he graduated from Union High School in 1979. He exclaimed, “Over the next 20 years, I grew in my knowledge and passion for woodworking, and soon had mastered every machine in the shop at my furniture job.”

“I lay four layers of Merino wool fiber uniformly in a shingle pattern around a flexible resist,” she explained. “Each layer is laid perpendicular to the proceeding one. To add luminosity, I use a different color of wool for each layer. Textural interest of contrasting material, such a silk fibers and fabrics, are placed on the outer layer.” Interestingly, Gorman then moistens the fibers with soapy water and rubs until a ‘skin’ forms. She then hand-rolls it between bubble wrap, which causes the fibers to intermingle. Then, she kneads and massages the fibers until they shrink 30-45%. The resist is removed and the cut edges are rubbed with soap. A hat is measured for size, and further felted or stretched as needed. The soapy water is rinsed out, and the felt is shaped upon a wooden hat block. Gorman then decorates each hat and sews millinery ribbon inside to give it a professional finish.

“My creative process is about expressing my soul, my emotions, and my interaction with the world around me,” she said. Her paintings are created intuitively, responding to the work as it develops. What emerges is highly personal, yet recognizable to others. Johnson continued, “My works are spontaneous, impassioned, vibrant paintings that reach out and hug your soul.” Much of her inspiration comes from nature and life experiences. “When you engage with my art, it is my hope that you will be overcome with feelings of joy and well-being, and be reminded that beauty and joy can be found everywhere, no matter the circumstance,” said Johnson. “I work with inks, watercolor, and acrylics on traditional and non-traditional art papers to produce 2D mixed media paintings.”

After a 12 year hiatus from carpentry, Horner bought a small lathe to revive his woodworking passions. After a rather hefty investment and time, he was set to create. “Little did I know this would become an addicting hobby that would get me through some tough times ahead,” he said. Horner hand selects domestic or exotic woods, colored resins, ebonite and items cast in resins to turn and shape for the bodies of his work, so each individual piece will be one-of-a-kind. The bodies are turned to size, then sanded. After sanding, a six-step finish is applied, followed by a nine-step sanding and polishing process after curing. “I use metal plating of 22k and titanium gold, rhodium, and platinum. All the metal components are pressed in, the pen is inspected, then ready for sale,” Horner said.

STUDENT ART SHOW . HOSPITALITY TENT . FREE ADMISSION . HOW IT ALL BEGAN In addition to new artists, Art in the Wilds proudly hosts a Student Art Show within the Art in the Wilds show. The exhibition and competition features high school students from Kane, Oswayo Valley, Bradford, Port Allegany, Ridgway, and Sheffield. These schools represent McKean, Elk, Potter, and Warren Counties. “I’ve heard there’s something special happening with the children this year, something exciting,” hinted Blackmore. Surprisingly, of the other “hot spots” of the show continues to be the locally-famous hospitality tent. According to Ruth Gentleman Peterson, Board Member and former Director of the Student Art Show, you can pick up a schedule of show events, list of demonstrations, and receive fabulous advice regarding local restaurants, lodging, and other events in the region. Art in the Wilds is funded by grants from the Kane Community Development Foundation and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and by vital local donations and sponsors. Major sponsorship contributions include those from UPMC Kane, Zook Motors Inc., Collins Pine Division of Kane Hardwood, Kane Rotary Club, Northwest Bank, Zippo Manufacturing Co., and other corporate and individual donations.

In the Beginning: Before the initial Art in the Wilds seed was planted, Blackmore knew that there were several very talented artists in the small town of Kane, PA, population 4,000, and began to organize them. She started her journey by hosting a Celebration of Arts in the local elementary school, and moved to an Artisan Market. The community began to appreciate and buy art. When Judge John Cleland suggested an art event with the name Art in the Wilds during the summer of 2006, Blackmore knew what that would become: an outdoor, juried fine arts show in the beautiful park in the center of town. Art in the Wilds began the year following, with a simple goal of giving the artists a venue for selling their art, providing a family-friendly yearly event, and bringing people to the area, whereby providing local economic development. Evergreen Park is located on Route 66 in Kane, PA, between Chestnut and Birch Streets. Doors open daily June 24 and 25, 10am-5pm. Parking and admission are free. Please remember, although we love our furry, four-legged friends, dogs and other pets are not permitted at the show. The Power of a Tourney Two Area Golf Outings Give Back in Very Big Ways

ELDRED WWII MUSEUM TOURNAMENT AND CHICKEN BBQ Saturday, July 8 Bolivar Golf & Country Club | Bolivar, NY

By Spencer Timkey

KISS CANCER GOODBYE GOLF TOURNAMENT Saturday, July 15 Cardinal Hills Golf Course | Randolph, NY

We’ve written about the Eldred WWII Museum a lot in The Summer Local the past few years, and with good reason. One of our area’s hidden gems, the museum (and its director, Steve Appleby) will take you on an in-depth, immersive trip into the world’s greatest conflict. If you’ve got a connection to the war - and most of us do - then a visit to the museum needs to be on your to-do list this summer.

Kathleen O’Neil beat cancer. Diagnosed with Leukemia, she battled the odds until finally pulling through and stomping it into the ground for good. For every heartbreaking story you hear about cancer taking one of our loved ones too soon, you also hear tales of triumph. Stories of people overcoming adversity and chemo and medication and the wicked disease you cringe at the sound of.

On Saturday, July 8, Bolivar Golf & Country Club in Bolivar, NY will play host to the 2nd Annual Eldred WWII Museum Golf and Chicken BBQ Benefit. The tournament offers you a chance to help the museum remain a viable source of expertise in historical artifacts and knowledge. And with the atrocities that occurred during the war, forgetting should not be in our vocabulary.

While Facebook statuses and texts can lift spirits, they don’t pay the medical bills. So in 2009, O’Neil created her non-for-profit Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye, an organization dedicated to assisting those in need around the Western New York area. On Saturday, July 15, Cardinal Hills Golf Course in Randolph, NY will host the 5th Annual Kiss Cancer Goodbye Golf Tournament.

The tournament committee looks to build on last year’s resounding success, which raised close to $30,000 for the museum. Diana Phalon, the tournament director, told me that they couldn’t have dreamed of a better outcome.

“We wanted to start a foundation to help other families and patients going through treatment,” O’Neil told me. “I, for one, am very fortunate to be able to say I beat cancer. Others aren’t so lucky. So I wanted to take the experience I had been through and use it to do some good.”

“Last year was incredibly busy,” she said. “We raised a lot of money and everywhere you turned people were having a good time. Our sponsors were very generous and helped draw a lot of people to come play, which we’re very grateful for. So far for this year, we’ve gotten quite a few foursomes signed up to play - so we couldn’t be more excited for round 2.”

The tournament has morphed from a small event to a full-blown party. Golfers have come to expect a good time while also paying tribute to both those who continue to battle and the ones who aren’t with us anymore. Drawing awareness to the cause is one thing, but O’Neil wanted to be able to do more than that.

Some of the aforementioned sponsors made significant contributions. The Port Allegany Veterans Memorial Group wrote a check for $10,000, while Zippo’s Blasdell Foundation added another $2,500. Coupled with the funds the actual tournament raised, and the museum had a significant monetary bolster for operational costs.

“Since the first year, we’ve donated close to $20,000 to local families,” she said. “There’s also our Stand Scholarship, which we give to students in the community who are constantly doing good, organizing events or just shedding some light on the fight against cancer.”

“Premo Limo, a limousine service, is giving away ‘An Evening in Ellicottville’ - which gives the winner a free ride in their SUV limo to Ellicottville with a stack of gift cards,” Phalon said. “Last year, we had prizes from major sports teams like the Buffalo Sabres/ Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers/Pirates and Philadelphia Flyers. The Erie Otters and Buffalo Bisons both gave us game tickets to give away. So we’re able to offer some pretty great prizes based on the generosity of our sponsors.”

Cardinal Hills, a scenic course tucked by Amish country, will soon complete its new 3,200 square foot event center smack-dab in the middle of the course. There’s a built-in kitchen, bathrooms and will be the perfect spot to host an event.

Last year, the tournament saw a full house of 96 golfers. They’re increasing the field to 116 this year because they had to turn so many people away, and the tournament committee figures they’ll fill that number no problem.

“We’re so excited to be able to use the new event center,” O’Neil said. “There are tons of different games and prizes for people to enter to win. We’ve got a Vegas hole (where golfers can bet), a chipping contest into some oversized lips, and last year we did a helicopter drop - you pay $10 for a ball, and if it’s closest to the pin after dropping out of the chopper then you win. It’s really a great event that’s been well received by everyone who comes to play.”

You can expect your traditional tournament contests, like closest to the pin and longest drive, but they’re also offering a putting challenge and “don’t lose the ball” as well. And if you’d like to be a sponsor, there are multiple tiers for you to choose from.

You can sign up to become a hole sponsor for $100, and if you’re not golfing, an easy $10 donation will get you dinner after the tournament concludes. You can sign up for golf, dinner, or a hole sponsorship on the website at www.gottakisscancergoodbye.org.

“If you don’t want to golf but still want to come to the tournament, we’re selling tickets for just the dinner for $13,” Phalon said. “It’s $240 per foursome, which includes golf, cart, dinner, the in-golf games and a door prize ticket as well.”

“I’m so grateful for everyone in the Southern Tier, where a majority of our funds are raised,” she said. “Keeping the money in the WNY community is very important to me, and I can’t express my gratitude enough for everyone who has helped us make this event the success it is. We’re hoping to be able to unveil a special announcement at the tournament, and just to be able to continue to help those in need.”

The 2nd Annual Eldred WWII Museum Tournament and Chicken BBQ goes down on Saturday, July 8 at Bolivar Golf & Country Club. For more information and registration, you can head to https://sites.google.com/site/eldredwwiimuseumgolfbenefit/.
