‘Stroll the Streets’ returns to Ellicottville for another summer of FREE family fun!

WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE OUR MOVE TO:

By Spencer Timkey If you mention Ellicottville to someone, the first words out of their mouth are probably in the range of “I love that place in the wintertime!” While the vibe of the winter months certainly paces the town’s heartbeat, locals and repeat visitors know that the best kept secret is 14731 in the summer. Starting Friday, June 30 and running every Friday until mid-September, the Village is thrilled to host the 2nd summer of “Stroll the Streets” - an activity-laden weekly mini-festival. After seeing the success of last summer’s inaugural, the committee, local businesses, and our Chamber of Commerce will again partner to provide free, family-friendly entertainment. “It’s getting better by the week,” said committee member Christy Rounds, co-owner of Adventure Bound onthefly located in downtown Ellicottville. “When our family lived in N. Michigan, the village had something similar to what we’re doing here. It started as an attempt to expand tourism by getting a jumpstart on the weekend. But it ended up having a huge appeal among locals too. Kids came into town to see their friends during summer break. It was wildly popular and I think Ellicottville is the type of community that can emulate that success.” Last summer, activities and entertainment included live music, face painting, stilt walkers and demonstrators. By the third week, the buzz was so palpable the committee knew they were onto something.

“It’s a really great way for the community to come together,” Rounds said. “From locals to visitors to merchants, it’s incredible to see how everyone is embracing this. While we’ve got a ton of things lined up, we’re always looking to add more. We encourage those who want to participate to let us know and we’ll get them on the schedule.” Activities start every Friday at 5pm and run until 8pm, with music typically going from 5:30-7:30. Participating merchants will stay open until 8:00, so folks will be able to enjoy the event and also continue to shop. “We’ve already got some awesome musical acts lined up,” Rounds said. “We’ve got Zach & Jonah (of N. Tonawanda), who recently performed at our Paddle Festival. We’ve got everything from local recording artists to regional performance teams, balloon tying, henna tattoos, face painting, a circusy act ever week … the list goes on.” Brian McFadden, Executive Director of the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, said it’s great to not only have this type of event in the village, but also to have it spearheaded by local business owners. “It’s another way to bring people into town and see what we’ve got to offer,” he said. “At the beginning, some merchants were skeptical - but now, they can’t wait for Friday nights. We think the ultimate goal is something like this: have a more engaged, familyfriendly Friday night and also to get folks to come a day early if they’re coming for a Saturday wedding or event. If we can provide some entertainment, they can make a weekend out of it.” Near the end of the summer, there’s going to be a few movie nights at the Gazebo and a Shakespeare in the Park production. It’s pretty incredible to see an event that started so small last summer blossom into something significant. It benefits all parties involved. Stroll the Streets begins Friday, June 30 and runs every Friday through Sept. 15. For more information, stop into any participating local shop or search “Stroll the Streets in Ellicottville” on Facebook. Activities will be changing each week, so check back often. If you’d like to perform and help out, contact Christy Rounds at Adventure Bound onthefly, or send a message to the event’s FB page.

Ask Team Pritchard... Why Ellicottville?

Gallery 14731 brings hand-selected art, jewelry, candles and more to Ellicottville’s main drag

NY

NEW Look, NEW Location!

By Greg Culver As any good business owner knows, location is everything. That’s why, when a space opened up on the bustling sidewalk of downtown Ellicottville, Emily Hettrick jumped on the chance. “I loved our original retail space, but there just wasn’t the foot traffic I was hoping for,” she said about her previous location behind Kwik Fill. Emily’s new space on Washington Street occupies the storefront formally filled by The Boardroom on Main, next door to Adventure Bound. Owner of Gallery 14731, Hettrick is a local girl who loves to ski with her family. While business ownership has placed big demands on her time, she has proven that it is still possible to get out a few days a week when winter is in season. Next to skiing, her other love encompasses handmade products and artwork. It is this second love that encouraged her to turn that passion into a business just a little over two years ago. The new space on Ellicottville’s main drag brings that passion for art closer to the public eye. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by the interior’s rustic yet refined look and feel. The sitting area offers a comfortable space to sit and take it all in. One of the many great things about old retail buildings are the awesome windows facing the sidewalk. Passersby get a good view into the gallery as well as an up-close look at the latest works on display. The gallery is currently set up in a traditional retail layout, but come September things will get a little more artsy. Emily’s intention is to offer a gallery format for artists to showcase their works - all for sale - for six to eight weeks. We’re not talking your standard oil paintings of fruit bowls here ...

H

There are jewelers, candlemakers, Ellicottville branded products, soaps and more. Vanishing Pixies out of Little Valley distributes their handmade jewelry at Gallery 14731. Assorted rocks and gems give this jewelry an earthy look and feel that compliments any outfit or ensemble. Espacio Handmade has an amazing selection of their stainless steel flasks wrapped in hand-dyed, vegetable tan leather, stitched by hand and etched with some pretty whimsical sayings. In another section of the store you’ll find beautiful, handcut, food-safe natural slate cheese plates and coasters by RockTimber. And oh yeah, there are paintings. Emily is always on the lookout for new and interesting works, and is happy to have Buffalo artist Peter Fowler on display and on sale at gallery. Peter paints outdoor scenes and images in a unique layered oil technique that blends minimalist design with a watercolor-like look. Originally from Denver Colorado, Peter started his painting career while working as a computer consultant in Boston, MA. He later moved to Europe in 1989, which allowed him to observe and absorb the artistic heritage and hone his own style. After ten years in Seville, Spain, Peter found his way to Buffalo. He has been showcased all over the area including the Burchfield Penny Art Center. Emily plans to attend a few handpicked buying shows to keep the gallery fresh and new through each season. If you’re looking to design a unique space in your home, condo or office, be sure to stop in. Current hours at the gallery are Tuesday through Sunday 11am6pm. Gallery 14731 is also taking part in the Stroll the Streets events throughout the summer in Ellicottville with special activities and attractions for everyone. Find out more about the gallery on their Facebook page, Gallery 14731.

Cannabis sativa, aka Hemp, is one of three species of the Cannabis genus herbaceous plant indigenous to central Asia and India. It contains 85 different chemical compounds, with cannabidiol (CBD) being a very important constituent. CBD accounts for 40% of the plant’s extract but does not have the intoxicating, psychoactive effects that tetrahydrocannibinol (THC) has on the body. Cannabis sativa is cultivated to grow longer stalks and lower THC. The fiber from these stalks can be used in over 25,000 different ways, including pressing CBD oil out of them. A carbon dioxide cold press technique at low temperatures is used to produce our specific CBD oil. This process is non-toxic and, once at room temperature, the CO2 evaporates out of the CBD oil, producing a PURE and effective extract. Scientific studies have shown many positive health benefits of CBD-only extract, legalized in 44 states.

After making the move from the downtown village to the Tamarack Club at Holiday Valley Resort just a little over a year ago, Ellicottville Oasis Spa has been on the hunt for a new skin care line. Enter Eminence, an organic skin care line highly coveted by the stars; everyone from Madonna to Lady Gaga to Mark Ruffalo are using Eminence products in their daily skin care routine.

How do Cannabinoids Work? The human body has an Endocannabinoid system including endocannabinoids produced by our own bodies, enzymes that create and destroy the endocannabinoid compounds and the endocannabinoid receptors on our cells. These receptors accept endocannabinoids and plant-derived cannabinoids (aka phytocannabinoids), such as CBD, THC, CBN (cannabinol) and CBG (cannabigerol). Biochemical reactions occur in the body once these compounds make contact with the receptors. There are two known cannabinoid receptor subtypes: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found mostly in the central nervous system but also in your main detoxification organs: lungs, kidneys and liver. Skin care is such an important part of daily routine for both men and women, but can often be overlooked. It can also be overwhelming trying to choose just the right products; shelves at department stores are lined with serums, toners, cleansers and more, all claiming to be the best. This is where Ellicottville Oasis Spa is ready and willing to help. I got a chance to catch up with Joanne Timkey, owner/operator of Ellicottville Oasis Spa, to learn more about the product line by Eminence … CAITLIN: Why does Eminence stand out from other skin care lines? JOANNE: Not only is it organic, natural, good and good for you, but it really works! It’s very effective in resolving most skin care issues. Whether you are breakout prone, showing signs of aging, or just trying to reverse sun damage, there is a product within the Eminence skin care line that will work for you! CAITLIN: How does it work? And what are the benefits? JOANNE: Eminence uses the very best ingredients and natural alternatives to such products as Retinol, Hydroquinone and Botox. Eminence users will benefit from younger and more youthful skin, decrease in wrinkles, less redness in cases of Rosacea, a dramatic decrease in blemishes for those with problematic skin … CAITLIN: How long before you can expect to see results? JOANNE: Each individual case is unique … some results are instant, but others may take longer, depending on the issue being treated. For example: a person with long-standing hyperpigmentation might not see a change right away, but they will see results eventually. That’s how wonderful this product line is! CAITLIN: There are so many different products available in the line. Which ones will you carry at the spa? Can customers order products not in stock? JOANNE: We carry a very large selection at the spa; you’ll just have to stop in and take a look. If there is something you would like but don’t see on our shelves, we will be happy to special order it for you. CAITLIN: What would you recommend to someone who is just starting to become serious about their skin care? JOANNE: The best idea is to book a facial with us so we can analyze your skin and recommend product that will suit your individual skin type. In many cases, we do have samples that we can give you to try at home, to see what will work best for the issue being treated. CAITLIN: Has the move from the village to the resort impacted/changed your business? JOANNE: Yes! It has increased our business significantly! Not only have we retained our clients from the village location, but we are now in a better location to serve the hotel guests staying for conferences, weddings, bachelorette parties, skiing and golfing, etc. Ellicottville Oasis Spa has been an Ellicottville staple for 14 years now. Since moving to Holiday Valley they have brought the resort a full-service spa which is well staffed with experienced and caring licensed professionals. They are open six days a week April through November, and seven days during the ski season. Eminence products are now available so stop in and have a look, or better yet, call Ellicottville Oasis Spa at 716-6998996 and book a facial. You can find out more information about their services at holidayvalley.com/activitiesevents/spa/ and at www.ellicottvilleoasis.com. For more about Eminence Organics, go to eminenceorganics.com.

The Taste of Olean and Art In the Park

A day of delicious food, inspiring art, and plenty of entertainment for both young and old By Mary Heyl

Express your own creativity using chalk during the event’s newest art contest, “Chalk it Up!”

The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce and the Cattaraugus County Arts Council invite you to enjoy an afternoon of delicious food, inspiring art, and family-friendly fun at their annual Taste of Olean/Art in the Park event! On Sunday, July 23 from 11am-5pm, War Veterans Park on State Street in Olean will host this popular festival, where visitors can sample a variety of foods and drinks from area restaurants, while enjoying fine art and crafts at the juried festival. This free event is also a great opportunity to explore your own creative (and competitive) side through the Chalk Art Contest and Bocce Ball Tournaments. Since 1990, the Taste of Olean has invited area restaurants to share some of their best bites with visitors, who come from all over western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania to attend. Vendors will offer a small portion of their restaurants’ menu items - not whole meals or sandwiches - for a very affordable cost (50 cents to $3.50). This way, visitors can try lots of different items and maybe even discover a new favorite restaurant! GOACC’s chief operating officer, Meme Yanetsko, is pleased to have several returning vendors this year. Last year’s participants included Ann Marie’s Homemade, Brother’s Bistro, Hammer Back Bar & Grill, JCC Alumni Association, Maple Ridge Bison Ranch, Mirchi Bar-N-Grill, Robyn & Ravyn’s, Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino, and Sinfully Delicious. A full list of participating restaurants and their menus will be available before the festival at oleanny.com. In addition to restaurant vendors, this year’s Taste of Olean will also feature local wineries and breweries including Four Mile Brewing Company and Merritt Estate Wineries. For those who love to shop, the Jamestown Community College Alumni Association will host the third ‘Marketplace at The Taste’ during the event. The Marketplace showcases the best local food and catalog vendors who sell locally grown produce, packaged sauces, honey, mixes, jams, pies, and cookware items such as Pampered Chef and Tupperware. Once visitors are fortified by great local food, they can enjoy exploring the beautiful works of regional artists. Art in the Park has been taking place long before the Taste of Olean and even predates the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, according to Executive Director Tina Hastings. “This will be the 68th year for Art in the Park, explained Hastings. “The Arts Council has run the event for about 15 years.” Only in recent years have the Taste of Olean and Art in the Park been combined; the two events joined forces in 2004. In previous years, both events took place at JCC’s Olean campus; however, last year’s construction on Union Street forced the activities to move to War Vets Park, which turned out to be a great location. Bill Aiello, Mayor of Olean and member of the Taste committee said, “War Veterans Park was an ideal location last year. The layout of the park, the electricity capacity, water and the pavilion - all add up to a great spot.”

The Taste of Olean/Art in the Park will be held rain or shine. More than twenty artists and a few non-profit organizations have already registered for Art in the Park as of the end of June. Hastings anticipates at least 30 vendors in total come July 23, including a few new ones. Artists travel from all over the region - from Olean, Franklinville, Fredonia and Pennsylvania. Visitors can expect an impressive range of items at Art in the Park, which is accepting vendor applications until July 9. Hastings explained, “It is a fine arts and artisan kind of event, so we’re looking for all kinds of art: fiber arts, pottery, even artisan soap makers with great packaging and great design. We have jewelry makers, painters, and photographers. One of our new artists is an artist that works in paper making and creates gorgeous paper flowers.” Those who wish to participate as a vendor can contact Hastings at 716)372-7455 or visit www.myartscouncil.net. The Taste of Olean/Art in the Park is also an opportunity to recognize some of the artists and restaurateurs. Because Art in the Park is a juried art show, ribbons will be awarded for the Best in Show, Best New Exhibitor, and Best Presentation. The Taste of Olean will announce the recipients of this year’s Hospitality Wall of Fame awards, which recognize individuals or businesses who have made a significant contribution to the local food service/hospitality industry. Express your own creativity using chalk at this year’s new event, Chalk It Up! This art contest is open to the public: a $5 registration fee on the day of the event provides a 4 ft. by 4 ft. space on the paved basketball court in War Vets Park. Prizes for Best in Show will be awarded in both age categories (ages 10 to 15 and ages 16 and up), but there will also be space where children ages 10 and under can draw for free. Although Taste of Olean/ Art in the Park takes place rain or shine, the Chalk Art Contest will be cancelled in the event of rain. Also new this year, the Rehabilitation Center will host a lawn bocce ball tournament. The tournament will begin at 11am; registration is $50 per team of two, which includes $12 for food/beverages. A cash prize will be awarded to the winning team! To register or for more information, call 716-375-4730. There’s something for every member of the family to take in at the Taste of Olean/Art in the Park! Not only can visitors enjoy lots of delicious food, but they can also talk to artists about their work and purchase pieces directly from them. Live performances including a talent contest, plus a bounce house and playground provide additional entertainment throughout the day.

THE SUMMER LOCAL ~ JULY 2017 ... Page 15

10,000 MANIACS Jamestown-native band to fill the hills of Griffis Sculpture Park July 16

A Conversation with MARY RAMSEY HULICK: You will be performing at the Griffis Sculpture Park Summer Festival on July 16. Have you visited the park before? RAMSEY: Oh yes. I believe we played there before when Natalie (Merchant) was the lead singer. It is a beautiful place. HULICK: You’ve been the lead singer of the band since 1995. RAMSEY: Something like that. When Natalie decided to go on to a solo career it was about that time. I had done the last tour with her in Europe and when she decided to leave, the guys wanted to keep the band together, so John (Lombardo) and I were their kind of extended family … we had toured with them as an opening act duo, John & Mary, and I was a background singer for the band as well as a string player, so they knew my abilities, and John was a member of the band in 1981 before he left … so it was kind of just a natural progression to ask us to join. HULICK: Does everyone still live locally? RAMSEY: Yes. Jerome Augustyniak is in Buffalo on the west side, John and I live on the west side, Dennis Drew and Jeff Erickson live right in the city of Jamestown and Steven Gustafson lives in Frewsburg in the country. HULICK: You just got back from performing in Brazil. How did that go? RAMSEY: It was great! We went there around 1998 and they have brought us back I think this makes our fourth time. We became quite popular there because our introduction to the people was through a soap opera that played our song, “More Than This,” and it was played on the radio quite a bit.

......................... Sunday, July 16 | Griffis Sculpture Park By Melanie Hulick On Sunday, July 16, 2017 the beautiful rolling hills of Griffis Sculpture Park will be filled with the unmistakable sound of Jamestown’s music icons: 10,000 Maniacs. Playing this year’s Summer Festival at Griffis, the band loves performing in their own backyard in front of the fans that put them on the road to musical success. Originating in Jamestown, New York in the early 1980’s, the band has been credited as one of the original “indie” bands, and was part of the invention of the new “alternative” rock music that was forming on FM radio at the time. I recently had a chance to catch up with Mary Ramsey, lead singer of the band. We talked about when she took over the lead vocals after original lead singer, Natalie Merchant, decided to go on as a soloist. We also talked about album titles, the thought behind the band name, a new project in the works, and whether or not the members of the band all live locally or have scattered to the wind. The debut of Ramsey as the lead singer was the perfect fit, as their first Billboard charting single, “More Than This”, reached #24 after she stepped into the spotlight, which was the highest charting single in the history of the band. This year marks the 30th anniversary of their debut album, “In My Tribe” and they will be playing many of the songs from the album as a thank you to all their fans. Talking about the fans, Ramsey said, “The reality is that the fans are an element … they are part of the band … when they’re there they inspire us and we see smiling faces and people having a good time. It’s pretty contagious.” Bring a blanket or lawn chair and hear the incredible music of 10,000 Maniacs soaring against one of the most beautiful backdrops that Western New York has to offer. Griffis Sculpture Park is located just a short drive north of Ellicottville, at 6902 Mill Valley Road, East Otto, NY 14729. The park is open daily May 1-Oct. 31, dawn to dusk. Tickets for the 10,000 Maniacs concert are $20 in advance or $25 at the gate; children 12 and under are free! Gates will open at 12 noon, with the concert starting at 2pm featuring opening act, Jim Donovan & Sun King Warriors.

HULICK: You got to perform with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. RAMSEY: I was thrilled and scared to do it because years ago I had been asked to sub with the viola in the orchestra and so I thought … “OMG! I know these people” … I was with them in the back of the orchestra and now being in front of the orchestra was so amazing. I have such respect for the members. They are like athletes … very good at what they do … everything is so exacting. HULICK: Do you write all your own songs? RAMSEY: Well when we do albums … for example, two years ago we did an album of Celtic music, “Twice Told Tales,” and those were songs that were public domain … we had an album the year before, “Music From The Motion Picture,” and those were songs we collectively wrote. HULICK: Any new projects in the works? RAMSEY: Yes, this year we’re going to do another album. Last year we did an album titled, “Playing Favorites,” which was a live record of our concert in Jamestown, so we are due to do another album of our own original music. HULICK: Who comes up with the names of the albums? RAMSEY: Well, it depends … sometimes they’re voted on … and there are some great ones that don’t get chosen (laughs). With the album, “Playing Favorites,” John had a list of titles and we thought that title was a good one for what the album was about. “Twice Told Tales” came from Dennis I think. I’m not sure about any of the earlier albums because I wasn’t part of the process at the time. HULICK: How about the name of the band … what is the story behind that? RAMSEY: Well, that is before my time as well, so I am going to continue the folklore (laughs). There was a movie called “2000 Maniacs” and they had different titles they were thinking about, but somewhere along the way they thought it would be cool to call the band 10,000 Maniacs because the music doesn’t sound like the title, being of a gentle folk-rock kind of style. There were a few other ideas I’m told, but that one stuck. HULICK: I read a piece written about your 1999 album, “The Earth Pressed Flat,” and they described your music as “your greatest achievement … the perfect postpunk Celtic folk rock album.” RAMSEY: (laughs) Whoa! HULICK: (laughs) Your mind just conjures up so many genres of music that it’s hard to put a finger on it. RAMSEY: It’s a nice quote. That was an album that didn’t get as much attention as the other ones. I think that just exemplifies all of our different musical influences, and when you melt all of that together, it turns into some kind of recipe. HULICK: Like a Heinz 57. (laughs) RAMSEY: (laughs) Yes!

Influencing positive change can be as easy as going out of your way to ask how someone’s day is going. We’re all guilty of judging a book by its cover, not knowing exactly what kind of internal struggle people go through on a day-to-day basis. Mental health issues can be far more difficult to overcome than physical ones. In 2014, Olean, NY native Jessica Sweitzer succumbed to her battles with bipolar disorder. In remembrance, her family and coworkers at the Olean YMCA started the Jessica Sweitzer Memorial Fund to benefit “Swizzy’s Cause.” The fund aims to assist and improve those suffering and battling mental illnesses. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1-in-5 Americans experience some form of mental illness every year, and 1 in 25 suffer enough to have it severely impact their everyday lives. Staggering, heartbreaking numbers. Mental health groups around the country tirelessly work to ensure more people don’t suffer the same fate as ones like Jessica. On Friday, July 21, the YMCA will host ‘Putt Putt for a Cause’ at Mystic Water Resort in Limestone, NY. The proceeds from the event will go directly to Swizzy’s Cause. The 18-hole putt putt course at Mystic Water Resort was designed by local landscapers, with each hole uniquely crafted with water, stone and shrubbery. The event will pit 4-person teams against each other and have different challenges on every hole. Tickets are $160 per team ($40 per person) and include entry, food, beverages, and all of the entertainment that will be on-site. All teams registered by July 14 will receive Putt Putt water bottles. If you’re not participating in the golf portion, you can still buy tickets at the door to attend and show your support. Other activities will include life-sized Jenga, sports challenges and cornhole, as well as live music, 50/50’s and basket raffles. The theme for this year’s Putt Putt for a Cause is “Be a Sport,” so be sure to wear your favorite team jersey! You can buy raffle tickets at the Olean YMCA, and the prizes are pretty great. Things like a week-long vacation to Orlando or Las Vegas, a 6-person limo wine tour, a 1-year YMCA membership, 2 tickets to the Indians/Yankees game in Cleveland, and 2 Luke Bryan concert tickets. If you would like to participate in this very special event, you’re encouraged to sign up before July 14 at the Olean YMCA. For additional information, go to http://yourymca. org/giving/swizzys-cause.aspx. Mystic Water Resort is located at 620 Parkside Dr, Limestone, NY 14753. The resort is situated next to a 20-acre lake and offers log cabin rentals, a championship 18-hole golf course, driving range, and plenty of other family recreation. TRAIL CENTRAL

ALL YOU NEED IS SUNSHINE By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau

Summer brings sunny, carefree days perfect for relaxing in the more than great outdoors of the Allegheny National Forest Region in northwestern Pennsylvania. Local events in July include the Kids & Cancer Benefit Run, the 39th Allegheny Mountain Engine & Implement Demonstration, and the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Zippo/Case Museum. Plan your summer getaway to include some time on the water, along with indulging in a delicious ice cream treat - July is National Ice Cream month so no excuses needed. SUMMERTIME FUN ON THE WATER The forest is green and lush, but there’s plenty of blue water in this neck of the woods for canoeing and kayaking, swimming, water skiing, or boating. The Allegheny Reservoir, located within the Allegheny National Forest, offers over 100 miles of forest-shaded shoreline with a wide choice of water activities. At Willow Bay, located at the northeastern shoreline of the Reservoir, you can put in your motorized boat from the paved boat launch. Enjoy a day on the water relaxing and taking in the scenery, or try your hand at walleye fishing or water skiing. Many small coves along the shoreline provide private areas to enjoy swimming from the boat. Conveniently located near the boat launch at Willow Bay are large parking facilities for your vehicle and boat trailer.

Summertime fun is a day boating on the beautiful Allegheny Reservoir in Pennsylvania. The Kinzua Wolf Run Marina offers easy access to boating on the Allegheny Reservoir.

Kayaks, canoes, or paddle boards can be rented from Allegheny Site Management. If you would like to turn your day trip into an overnight, Willow Bay offers a choice of cabins, tent and RV sites. The new wooden cabins at Red Bridge feature a delightful porch swing and room for a family of four. At Willow Bay, some of their cabins are located along the shoreline; some are located along a mountain stream. Both are ideal for spending your day on the water or hiking a nearby trail, with the evenings spent roasting marshmallows around a campfire. For information on cabin rentals, boat rentals, RV camping and outfitting needs call Allegheny Site Management at 814-368-4158 or go to alleghenysite.com.

KINZUA WOLF RUN MARINA Located along Rt. 59 between Bradford and Warren, this full service marina along the shoreline of the Allegheny Reservoir offers ready access to the water. The Marina offers boat rentals, boat docking, gasoline, seasonal slips, weekend and week slips, and access to primitive “boat access only” camping. Docksiders Café at the Marina offers stunning vistas of the Allegheny Reservoir; dine outside on the deck and enjoy the beauty of the spectacular sunsets.

KINZUA BEACH Located along the Allegheny Reservoir, Kinzua Beach offers free swimming in the Allegheny Reservoir. This day-use, public access beach features forest-shaded picnic areas and free parking. Restrooms are available. The swimming area is reached by walking along a sloping grass covered area to a cement area with a sandy, stone covered shoreline. At the far end of the parking area, you will find the trailhead for Rimrock Overlook Trail. This short 1.3-mile trail connects the beach area to Rimrock Overlook, one of the most photogenic overlooks in the Forest. To reach Kinzua Beach, drive south on Rt. 219, turning onto Rt. 770 west which turns into Rt. 59. Travel west along Rt. 59 to the Allegheny Reservoir; before crossing Morrison Bridge, you will see the entrance to Kinzua Wolf Run Marina on the right, and on the left, via Forest Road 617, is Kinzua Beach.

ELLICOTTVILLE GAZEBO SERIES

GREAT LINE-UP FOR THE 2017 SERIES INCLUDES A GOOD MIX OF MUSIC AND A BIT OF SHAKESPEARE Summers in Ellicottville have become synonymous with fun and excitement. Thursdays are no different. This year’s Thursday evening Gazebo Series (7-9pm) has sprinkled in a few nonThursday surprises as well. Through the sponsorship of CCSE Federal Credit Union, the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce will make sure the air is full of music and fun each week! This year’s series features seven performances by some of the region’s best, closing with a special Friday night show on Aug. 11 at 8pm, when Shake on the Lake performs arguably the most famous story of star-crossed lovers. Co-sponsored by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet will be featured on the gazebo lawn and invites everyone to come out and enjoy. Before audiences can step back into old Verona, however, six weeks of great music will fill the gazebo, starting with the Rock, Pop, and Oldies Dance sounds of The Buffalo Five featuring Carolyn Lansom on Thursday, June 29. This five-piece group has a set list ranging from Gloria Gaynor, Etta James, and CCR to Bruno Mars, Steve Miller Band, and Tom Petty ... even a little White Stripes! Saturday, July 1 will feature a special engagement for the series, coinciding with this year’s Summer Music Festival. The Theresa Quinn Trio will take to the stage as one of the region’s hottest pianists and organists in the region. According to her website, “She plays [almost] every type of gig under the sun: R&B, Blues, Rock, and Standards, performed as a solo lounge pianist, duo with a drummer, female vocal trio, or with an eight-piece group and horn section. She is a church organist with a twist: able to sing and play classical repertoire or any contemporary style with ease.” The trio will perform from 1-4pm. On Thursday, July 6, Miller and the Other Sinners will take over the Gazebo. As a nationally touring Southern Rock band from Buffalo, their sound blends delta grit and Memphis soul with some great sounds of the south. A week later, on Thursday, July 13, the Black and Blues Band will perform. The Buffalobased band bills itself as one of the hardest working Blues/Funk/Classic Rock cover bands. They perform songs originally done by B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaugh and so many more. Returning to the gazebo from their stellar performance in 2016, Old Hippies will take the stage on Thursday, July 20 with their acoustic music from many, many generations. These musicians are here to have fun, and to make sure you do as well! On Thursday, July 27, Black Rock Zydeco will entertain with the traditional sounds of the Louisiana swamps, back with the Cajon and Creole. Black Rock Zydeco brings the party that’s been associated with the music through it’s Mardi Gras roots to the great dance rhythms. The energetic sounds will have you up and dancing in the square. Lady Rush & the Vinyls will be in town on Thursday, Aug. 3 with their funk and soul band, performing some good soul oldies and impromptu mixes of pop covers. They have their own album of originals out that is well worth the listen. Keep tabs on this year’s FREE Gazebo Series performances at www.ellicottvilleny.com. Bring you blankets and lawn chairs to the Village Square ... we’ll see you at the Gazebo!

SPRINGVILLE SCAVENGER HUNT

Ready for something really fun? The Springville Area Chamber of Commerce will host their 3rd Annual Community Scavenger Hunt July 21-28. The scavenger hunt invites participants to visit participating Chamber member businesses in Arcade, Boston, Chaffee, Colden, Collins, East Concord, East Otto, Glenwood, Gowanda, Sardinia, Springville and Yorkshire. Retrieve specific items from participating member businesses, and you can be entered to win some really great prizes! Individuals, pairs, teams, and families are asked to pre-register in person for the Scavenger Hunt at the Springville Area Chamber of Commerce Office located at 23 North Buffalo Street on Wednesday or Thursday, July 19-20 between 9am-5pm. Or you can register online at www.springvillechamber. com. Each participant will be assigned a scavenger hunt entry number and given a packet with a full list of participating Chamber members, addresses, hours, and the scavenger item(s) required to be collected from each business. Participants must retrieve ALL items designated to qualify for eligibility to win an award. If the packet is not complete when turned in, it will be disqualified. All qualified entries will have equal opportunity to win prizes. The Scavenger Hunt Awards Ceremony will be held Saturday, July 29 at 4pm at the Chamber Booth located at Fiddler’s Green Country & Bluegrass Festival. Participants are encouraged to be present, but are not required to attend to win prizes. For more information about this year’s Scavenger Hunt, or if your business is not a current Springville Area Chamber of Commerce member but would like to be a part of the Scavenger Hunt, contact Jennifer Weber at director@springvillechamber. com or call 716-592-4746.
