Ask Team Pritchard... Why Ellicottville?

The Ellicottville community comes together to eat, drink, and show support for the Rotary Club’s largest fundraiser of the year

AMERI-CAN YES WE CAN! By Spencer Timkey From an outsider’s perspective, Ellicottville seems like it wants for nothing. A bustling, vibrant village complements two dynamic ski resorts. You drive by beautiful homes and massive condominium complexes that line the streets and hills. On the surface, it’s paradise found.

But like most American towns and cities, there lies struggle. Think about it this way: in 201516, Ellicottville suffered its worst winter on record. This is a ski town, and when the skiers don’t come, things get tough. A business has the ability to absorb a bad year and forge on. An SPA employee of said business may not be so lucky. There is a direct, significant impact on families in the area when the snow doesn’t fly, which is why the work of The Rotary Club of Ellicottville is so critical.

On Saturday, Aug. 26, the Rotary will host its annual Tuscan Moon fundraiser at Holiday Valley’s Cabana Bar - an event where 100% of the proceeds go directly back into the local community. A gourmet dinner party that features dishes from 13 local restaurants across 16 food stations … it’s a night out with a feel-good vibe. “The event has evolved quite a bit since the first year,” Rotary President Greg Cappelli said. “It started as a golf tournament with dinner. But hosting a golf tournament is a tough way to make money, and we wanted an event that would help us raise the most money possible. So from there, we’ve had just the dinner. And it’s been a resounding success year after year.” No one involved takes a cut of the proceeds. The raw materials, donated by US Foods, Sysco and Curtze, are prepared - for free - by the participating restaurants. And since the event is on a Saturday night (which makes it tough for the restaurants to staff it), students from ECS serve it. A complete community effort. “We’re expecting 25-30 seniors this year to help out, and we know that they fight to volunteer,” Cappelli said. “And Holiday Valley’s Food & Beverage often hires them back for the summer and beyond. So the trickle down effect this event has on the community continues.” With a $65 ticket, you can expect things like crab-stuffed artichokes from Katy’s; risotto bites from Villaggio; brick oven pizza from Monroe St. Brick & Brew; Tuscan smoked pork from the Silver Fox; seafood lasagna from Myer’s Steakhouse; Eggplant parmesan from EBC; chicken marsala from The Birdwalk; parmesan encrusted zucchini from the Gin Mill; veal canneloni from Dina’s; deep fried ravioli from Ilio DiPaolo’s; a hand-carved beef station from John Harvard’s Brew House. Oh, and much more, including a dessert table filled with hazelnut gelato, Watson’s chocolates, and Tom Kneeland’s 20-foot “table of joy”. To grasp the enormity of the impact the Rotary has on the community, you need only look to the Ellicottville Memorial Library, where it sponsors summer reading programs. Or Santa’s Workshop, where they ensure kids have something from Santa under the tree. You can see it in the Arts in Education Program at Essex Art Center, or providing school supplies, or four $500 scholarships every year. It is an organization that continues to do the proverbial heavy lifting for the community but wants none of the recognition. Since Tuscan Moon started, the Rotary has raised - and pumped back into the community more than $75,000. An incredibly impressive figure that’s a true testament to the giving power of the Ellicottville area. “The things that we need to pay for (in regards to the Rotary) comes out of member dues,” Cappelli said. “100% of the money we raise goes back into the area. There are only nine members. But the work we put in is worth it when you see the fruits of the labor. We see the results and understand the dynamic. We’re privileged to be a part of something like this.” Tuscan Moon will shine down on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Holiday Valley’s Cabana Bar. Michael Nugent will return to perform live music, and there will be both live and silent auctions. Tickets are available through the Ellicottville Chamber or you can call Kegs at 716-699-8758.

BOOK YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE ... IN STYLE EVL Yurts is a nature lover’s playground

THE TEE BAR ... WITH A TWIST Soft Serve and Toggery combine for a flavorful summer experience

By Anjanette Nicolazzo

By Dash Hegeman

Picture it … your own little private shelter or tent area, communal fire pit to enjoy, like-minded individuals gathered ‘round, playing instruments and telling stories, coming as strangers and leaving as friends. Like what you just heard? Then time to pack your bags and head over to the 13-acre nature lover’s playground known as the EVL Yurts!

Ellicottville has always been a town of opportunity. Those who recognize and embrace opportunities can go far, but it takes more than just being in the right place at the right time. It takes hard work, sacrifice and unrelenting determination to truly succeed. No one knows this better than Dina DiPasquale and Kimberly Reading - owners of Dina’s and Mud, Sweat n’ Gears, respectively. Given their history within the town, it’s safe to say that when these two women set their eyes on a prize, some impressive work is about to happen.

Striving to be short-term communal living at its best, EVL Yurts is a new and unique camping opportunity in the Town of Ellicottville, just a few miles north of the village off route 219. Administrative/Creative Director Catherine (Cait) Geary says one of their mottos is, “come alone, come together, come as you are.” Some may be wondering, however, what exactly is a yurt? According to Justin Dineen, Owner and Operator of EVL Yurts, “A yurt is a round collapsible structure with a lattice wall, acrylic sky light dome, and high tech fabric walls. Aside from our cabin, which serves as the rental office, the first official yurt at our campground is called ‘Yurtopia,’ and has two full-sized beds set up in bunk style.” The cost to rent a yurt is $60/night; two tent sites are also available for $25/night. However, campers can rent the entire 13-acre property for $110/night, which includes the yurt, tent sites, an activity area, communal fire pit, and a nice, secluded area where the property “takes on a whole new feeling as it enters into the hardwood forest at the back of the property,” according to Dineen. “We want our guests to know that we are providing a comfortable spot in nature, to feel welcomed, and to feel free to make the place their own during their stay,” said Geary. Guests should plan to bring their own bedding, grills, camping gear, and warm clothes. She continued, “Although the yurts stay cozy, western New York weather is always unpredictable. Better to be prepared!” Max capacity of the campground is 16 people, and the yurt sleeps four. Additional people are $10/person. Guests renting the entire property are welcome to bring a camper or RV at no charge; drop-in RV’s are $20/night; no-hookups available. The campground, interestingly, is being built in two phases. PHASE ONE: Geary explained that phase one is rustic with no running water or electricity. A porta potty is on site and a point driven well is being installed for guest use. This summer, a second yurt will be built. Next year, a full opening will commence with two yurts and two tent sites. A third yurt may be possible. PHASE TWO: Dependent on the success of phase one, phase two will be a major change. Electricity, wells, and septic will be installed, along with another section of road being built up the hill. Twenty more yurts over the course of a few years, a bathhouse with shower facilities and an activity yurt will be constructed. HOW IT ALL BEGAN: Dineen came up with the idea of EVL Yurts about nine years ago, when he was living and working at a resort in the Sequoia National Forest of California. The resort had two yurts that were used for various purposes. “I loved the design and the atmosphere they provided,” he said. In the following years, he traveled the national parks system and stayed in as many yurt campgrounds as he could find. The idea of a communal feel while camping continued to appeal to him. At the time, he was the general manager of a resort in California; his entrepreneurial spirit kicked in and the idea of opening his own campground was born. In 2013, his vision to bring the communal camping feel from the west to Ellicottville became reality. “It didn’t exist here, and with the way outdoor activity was growing, I felt a camping option would be a great idea for the area,” Dineen said. “So, I moved home and began looking for the perfect spot.” If your interest has been garnered to check out their little slice of utopia, Dineen and Geary can be reached through the EVL Yurts and Recreation Facebook page, or through email at evlyurts@gmail.com. They made sure to mention that they love visitors, so if the sign is up, feel free to stop on by! Dineen and Geary would like people to stay with this philosophy: “From the tiniest rock to the fragilist branch … Everything was placed with a purpose … Please leave only footprints and take only memories.”

Enter the Tee Bar With a Twist; a collaboration between Reading and DiPasquale that recently opened in the heart of Ellicottville just a few weeks ago. Specializing in ice cream and “toggery”, the shop will have a little something for everyone looking to add a little something extra to their Ellicottville experience. As previously mentioned, it has ice cream - a summertime staple no matter where you are. As for the toggery, we will get to that momentarily. Back to the ice cream. Close your eyes and focus on the idea of cool, refreshing ultra-rich frozen custard served up in a homemade waffle cone topped with sprinkles. “The difference between regular soft serve ice cream and frozen custard is the additional ingredient of pasteurized egg yolk that gives frozen custard its dense and creamy texture,” Reading explained. “The frozen custard also allows us to offer fun novelties such as ice cream cookie sandwiches made with Dina’s delicious cookies, hot fudge brownie sundaes and ice cream tacos.” And if somehow that’s not enough for you, they will also be serving premium ice cream and sherbet in a variety of flavors - all of which can be dipped, dotted and sprinkled with a variety of meltin-your-mouth garnishes from their toppings bar. Toggery. What is toggery you ask? Think Ellicottville themed tee shirts, hats, hoodies, and other souvenirs. Everything you could want to showcase your local pride. According to Reading, the inspiration came from a small business she and DiPasquale found when their families were vacationing out west. It was small, quirky and most importantly their kids absolutely loved it. “The store was always busy, and our kids wanted to go there every day after skiing. After all, ice cream is fun, nostalgic, refreshing and crowd pleasing. We were quick to agree that Ellicottville could accommodate a similar storefront,” Reading said. “All of our merchandise will be Ellicottville themed … merchandise like you don’t see anywhere else. Ellicottville love will eventually be found on t-shirts, sweatshirts, socks, hats, stickers, baby apparel, pint glasses, tote bags and just about anything else the name Ellicottville can be placed upon. Inventory will change on a regular basis.” Like almost everything in life, timing truly is everything. So when Katy’s Cafe decided to move from 8 Washington Street to a larger location, Dina and Kim decided to make their idea a reality. In a mere six weeks, with the help of contractors Bart Frank and Joe Koch, plumber Dominic Yantomasi, and Aldrich Painting, The Tee Bar was just about ready to open. Patra Lowes provided the finishing touches with a sign design that Pierce Steel from Olean, NY made into a tangible reality. The restoration of the building turned into a labor of love in many regards. “We paid close attention to the internal culture of the space,” Reading explained. “Our mission was to create an inviting environment that would engage customers and sell itself. The vibe is distinctively 1970’s … it’s bright, fun and full of personality. The plan was not to be ordinary so we included furniture, fixtures and games in order to lure customers to sit, relax and enjoy the space.” Not only was the idea for The Tee Bar a joint effort, but the naming of the shop was as well. They wanted to have a name that spoke to the concept of selling shirts as well as serving ice cream, which is where “With a Twist” comes into play. “And, Ellicottville is a ski town,” Reading commented. “If you’ve been around long enough, you remember riding t-bars at both Holiday Valley and HoliMont. Clever, right?” A clever play on words indeed. Because Ellicottville is a renowned ski town, one would wonder how a shop that specializes in ice cream plans to thrive in the winter months. DiPasquale and Reading are not the least bit concerned. They plan to operate year round and already have plans for a specialized hot chocolate bar and mountain waffles. Check out the social action of The Tee Bar on Instagram and Facebook @theteebar. Kim and Dina also encourage you to share your fun Tee Bar photos or videos to either of the social platforms. There’s still plenty of summer left, so the next time you’re in Ellicottville, stop by The Tee Bar and check out the new shop in town.

SHAKESPEARE IN THE SQUARE FRIDAY, AUGUST 11 @ 8PM VILLAGE SQUARE 800-349-9099 | www.ellicottvilleny.com

It’s arguably the most famous story of star-crossed lovers, and the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce is bringing it to town this summer. Co-sponsored by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet will be featured on the gazebo lawn in Ellicottville on August 11 at 8pm. “When people think of Ellicottville, they think of music and bands,” Chamber Executive Director, Brian McFadden said. “While that is a part of who we are, we want people to know that we also have an appreciation for, and are an outlet for much more. What better way to do this than to provide a free performance of Romeo and Juliet to everyone, put on by professionals that know and understand the art?” The play will be performed by Shake on the Lake, a Silver Lake, NY based Shakespearian troupe that has been bringing the Bard’s pieces to Western and Central New York since 2012. The organization’s goals are to create a fun, family-friendly, outdoor production of Shakespeare to high artistic standards. They look to use cost-effective, green production practices and have been known to use refurbished and repurposed items in their productions. Shake on the Lake also helps sponsors find ways to make performances low-cost to offer a higher accessibility to quality performances. Make sure you bring your chairs or a blanket and come out to enjoy an hour and a half of live Shakespeare. Head into town early and see what’s going on with Ellicottville’s Stroll the Streets from 5-8pm.

ELLICOTTVILLE SALT CAVE Energize Your Soul with an authentic Himalayan Salt Lamp

LAURA SOLLY YOGA Chair Yoga - Kids Yoga - Hatha Yoga ... Yoga for Everyone!

By Caitlin Croft

By Greg Culver

In this age of technology that we have come to know and love, many do not realize the negative side effects that are a result of the energy produced by modern luxuries. Everyday items such as TVs, appliances, computers and cell phones all emit positive ions. These positive ions can lead to negative impacts on our health such as headaches, insomnia, poor concentration, allergies and even weaken the immune system. Who hasn’t sat in front of their computer all day and not felt completely drained after? I know I sure have.

Unless you’ve been living under a mat, you’ve heard of and seen yoga studios. What was once a mystic exercise of mind and body has become a mainstream activity with many customized variations. Yoga has been around for centuries, and while it’s been practiced here in the states for years, it wasn’t until trainers and teachers put a practical spin on it, did mainstream America jump onboard. Now a fashion trend as much as an activity, many startups have cashed in on the lifestyle. Some cling to the tradition of yoga and what it can do for your mental and physical wellbeing. Here in Ellicottville, Laura Solly has been learning, training and teaching yoga to those looking for the whole package.

Well there is good news for all us techie addicts. A simple fix awaits at the Ellicottville Salt Cave. A fix that you can take home with you … a Salt Lamp. A salt lamp will diffuse negative ions into the air that will negate the positive ions emitted from our electronics. Negative ions are found at the ocean, waterfalls and in electric storms; it is why we feel stress free at the beach, as if our soul has been re-energized. We finally have an answer for why the sea re-centers us and cures all … or is it the margaritas and daiquiris? Ahem … back to salt lamps. Salt lamps are embedded with colors of yellow, red and orange. The orange glow produces a gentle heat - a feeling of calmness that enhances our concentration and halts impatience and angry impulses. This is all part of Chromotherapy (or Color Therapy) that heals us by using the energy of color to reorganize and rebalance our emotions along with our physical health … (Can I get one of these in my cubical stat?) Himalayan Salt has been hailed as the greatest fundamental health re-discovery of our time, and I can see why. Just spending thirty minutes inside the Ellicottville Salt Cave lobby chatting with owner/operator Tracy Draper, I could feel the calm wash over me. It’s as if you stepped into a whole different world - the soft glowing assortment of salt lamps in a variety of shapes from elephants to crosses to the quintessential rough-cut lamp. Prices can range from $24 for a USB lamp which will purify a 64 sq. ft. space (perfect for your work office or the kid heading off to his/her college dorm), to a $150 lamp which will purify up to 225 sq. ft. When I asked Tracy if the lamps are energy efficient, she advised that it is only a 15-watt light bulb that generates the soft glow - the equivalent of a nightlight. Perfect! Draper recently started carrying grey and white lamps which are even more rare than the pink salt we have come to recognize as the classic Himalayan Salt. A grey lamp is darker, making it ideal for sleeping quarters, while the white is better for work spaces since it helps to enhance mental clarity with the brighter white glow. Draper advises that some big box companies tend to put a laminate over their salt lamps which makes shipping and stocking easier but reduces their overall effectiveness. She assures that the lamps at her salt cave are authentic, coming directly from overseas. In addition to the salt lamps, Ellicottville Salt Cave carries other great, beneficial products such as Himalayan Salt soaps, foot scrubs, purifying bars, bath salts, inhaling stones and even cooking blocks. The product that intrigued me the most was the “Boo-Boo Stone”, which is about the size of a crabapple. When heated, it can help reduce soreness and tension in muscles; when refrigerated, it can help with inflammation and bruises. There are so many different uses and applications for Himalayan Salt; to find out what product would be best for you, I suggest booking a session with Draper. Find a full list of services offered at ellicottvillesaltcave.com, or better yet, stop in and “Catch Your Breath.”

Laura had a great inspiration in her dad who was a practicing yogi throughout her childhood. In 2008 Laura expanded her experience by training (200 hours) at Healing Waters in East Aurora. Laura’s first sessions were taught at a local Inn and even at the library … I think sometimes when we are down, a light draws us up, and that’s what happened when Laura lost her father. “After my Dad passed away, I really dove into the whole theory of yoga and what it meant on all levels,” Laura told me just recently. She said she never really intended to teach, but wanted to learn all aspects of yoga, and that included teaching. After a while, she realized she was pretty good at it. The timing was perfect for Laura. Yoga was becoming not just a popular activity but a hot trend and so easy and affordable for a newbie to try. And the health benefits - both physical and mental - are advantageous. Regular yoga practice improves circulation, relieves stress and keeps muscles loose and stretched. When is the last time you could comfortably touch your toes? Yoga is growing so much in today’s health market, and although a lot of people are using it as a great physical exercise, they fail to explore the mental benefits. Laura’s classes include exercises for both the mind and body, and now there are classes for all abilities and ages … Chair yoga offers folks a chance to participate and learn from a seated position. Those recovering from injury can maintain their flexibility off the floor and elevated. Elderly students can also move and flow from the comfort and support of a chair. As we age, sometimes it becomes harder to focus and concentrate. Yoga can increase brain power and reduce the effects of depression. My 74-year-old mom has been taking senior yoga classes and I have definitely noticed a difference in her overall attitude and demeanor. Kid’s yoga provides an awesome alternative to staring at a screen. Once these zombie children are unplugged and have a couple classes under their belts, they will surely realize that physical and mental exercise can be fun and challenging. The constant barrage of input kids gather from school, activities, the internet and other media can drain on their focus and energy. Practicing yoga once a week can make a major difference in a kid’s attention span. A noise-free and gadget-free escape is something we could all benefit from these days. If you’re interested in giving yoga a try, Laura Solly Yoga certainly has a class for you. The August schedule features a 4-week session of Chair yoga for just $50 if paid by July 25 ($60 after that). Dates for Chair yoga are Aug. 1, 8, 15 and 29. Kids yoga is also available for 4 weeks in August on the 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st, $30 if paid by August 1 ($35 after). Or sign up for one of Laura’s regular Hatha yoga sessions, which she offers three days a week. View her schedule, pricing, and reserve your spot on the mat through her website at www.laurasollyyoga.com. For questions, call Laura directly at 716-353-0951. The studio is located behind Daff Dry Goods, 17 Washington Street, downtown Ellicottville, NY.

LOBO WOLVES OF KANE A new exhibit at the McCleery Discovery Center, housed at the historic Kane Depot in Kane, Pennsylvania showcases the fascinating story of the Lobo Wolf, and how Dr. Edward H. McCleery, a physician, helped to save this sub-species from extinction. In the 1920’s Lobo wolves, (Canis lupus nubilus) the Great Plains Wolf, were being exterminated by the United States Biological Survey and the Canadian government as they were considered extremely dangerous to the large population of cattle in the western states.

NEW EXHIBIT: The McCleary Discovery Center tells the story of the Lobo Wolf.

Dr. McCleery, a great admirer of wolves from the time he lived in Wyoming, became a champion dedicated to the survival of the Lobo Wolves. He obtained his first wolf from Wyoming in January 1921, bringing him to Kane, PA, and naming him Jerry. In May, 1921, he obtained an additional four white wolves, naming them Lobe, Boreas, Montana and Diana. Later he obtained more wolves, bred those that he had, and eventually ended up with 60 wolves in his pack. A large lobo wolf could weigh as much as 130 pounds. The wolves were exhibited at a wolf park along U.S. Route 6 just east of Kane for over

The brochure features architectural and historical highlights of 25 buildPolka)ings within Bradford’s National Historic District with a detailed, numbered map of buildbe ating locations. Many of the signature buildings within the district are excellent examples pm. of Art Deco architecture including the Hooker-Fulton Building and Marilyn Horne Hall.

rsday,The Bradford Walking Tour Brochure encourages visitors to “look up” to experience a cludessampling of Bradford’s beautiful architecture and rich history. As the brochure’s beginesday, ning text describes, “If you listen carefully, you might be able to hear the steady hamTour-mering of nails on a makeshift mercantile, an investor plunking down a gold bar at the riday.Option House as he throws back a shot of whiskey, and oil producers passing out cigars to celebrate a successful deal.” of all Each building featured includes a photo and a short history. One of the buildings highlighted on the walking tour is 9 Kennedy Street, home of Graham’s Florist & Gifts. This building was originally designed to house a bank, but the bank went under before it was completed. Lucky for George Graham, who opened Bradford’s first greenhouse in 1891 - he knew it would be the perfect place to sell his fresh-cut flowers and plants. On openpot ining day, Graham gave away 3,000 rosebuds, one for each person who came through his r. Ed-impressive doorway.

The Power of a Tourney Drive for Life event at Pennhills Club aims to couple all-ladies fun with raising cardiac awareness

By Spencer Timkey Cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of death for American adults, can be prevented. You see the signs along the highways educating you on how to spot a stroke and you walk by AEDs in schools, arenas and public forums. These measures don’t guarantee survival. But they offer a one-two punch of awareness and assistance, maybe giving those affected a fighting chance. In 2013, Terry Reiley - a husband, father and friend - suffered a heart attack on a tee box at Pennhills Club. He didn’t make it. The impact of his death, however, led to the creation of an event that aims to shed some light on cardiovascular diseases and attacks. On Sunday, Sept. 17, Pennhills plays host to ‘Drive Fore Life’ - an all-ladies scramble that emphasizes the importance of knowing the signs. “The tournament is structured around 12 holes, which is kind of weird,” Christy Sullivan, tournament organizer and Zippo Lighters Senior Development Manager said. “The scoring is based on 9 holes, while the other three are fun. Some of our ladies are avid golfers, and some have never picked up a club before.” The only winning the tournament concerns itself with is people winning their battle against cardiovascular diseases. Combining these fun holes into play is a testament to that. “For instance, a stroke can leave someone blind - so one of the holes, we blindfold a team member and they have to rely on the team to get the ball in the hole,” Sullivan said. “Another is timed, as in how quickly you can get the ball in the hole. When someone is having a heart attack, it’s a race against time. So we try to incorporate these types of things to help raise awareness in a fun, interactive way.” After the tournament’s inaugural year, one of the charitable endeavors was to donate AEDs (or automated external defibrillator, a machine that jolts a heart back into function) to various golf courses and establishments around the area. One of which went to Birch Run Golf Course in Allegany. After the AED went in, a golfer suffered a heart attack on the course. That AED saved his life. “Cardiac diseases on the golf course are a lot more common than you would think,” Dr. Steve Herrmann told me. “The Drive Fore Life organization has been really successful since we started it. We’ve raised money for (the aforementioned) AEDs, pacemakers at Olean General Hospital and some cardio rehabilitation equipment for Bradford Hospital. There’s a lot of work that goes into this event, but it’s worth it.” Herrmann, a cardiologist in Bradford, was a close friend of Reiley’s. And the patient

who survived at Birch Run? A patient of his. He’s got a vested interest in the tournament because he sees the impact it has every day. This year, money raised will go towards new cardiology equipment at Bradford Hospital. “It’s a fun day because the ladies get to play while the men do all the work,” Sullivan told me, laughing. “There are so many great prizes in the silent auction. The last year we did the tournament, the winning team received Michael Kors watches. There are Kate Spade and Coach bags, a martini bar, a daiquiri bar … there’s a lot of incentive to come out and play. We like to encourage ladies who aren’t playing to come and buy tickets regardless to give themselves a chance to win.” There’s even a ‘wine’ hole. If a team member puts their first shot on the green (it’s a par 3) they automatically win a bottle of wine. I know that would be enough incentive for my girlfriend to play. “The wine hole is great, because even if you don’t win a bottle, you still get to taste,” Sullivan said. “We measure blood pressure before and after the shot to see what kind of pressure it puts on you. Things like this make the day so much fun. But we do make sure that we don’t forget the underlying mission - that’s to encourage and educate these ladies on the risks of cardiovascular disease.” If you remember a few months ago, Pennhills suffered the brunt of a brutal wind and thunderstorm that brought down over 100 trees. While it didn’t look great at the onset of spring, greenskeepers and grounds crew - under the direction of PGA Professional and Ellicottville native Jake Northrup - cleared the debris to return the course back into tip-top shape. “While the numbers aren’t as bad as they used to be, cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death for adults,” Dr. Herrmann said. “A lot of women have no idea that they’re either at risk or even in the midst of a cardiac emergency, and statistically, it will effect 1 out of 2 women. If we can make a difference, we’re going to.” “Dr. Herrmann is so humble. He’s the driving force behind this entire event,” Sullivan said. “He loves golf but loves this community even more. And we get so much support from everyone who’s involved. I get chills when I hear the stories of those affected … it’s an incredible day. We’re really looking forward to it.” Drive Fore Life takes place at Pennhills Club in Bradford, Pennsylvania on Sunday, Sept. 17. Tickets are $50 which includes golf, cart and the awards ceremony dinner. Teams consist of 4 ladies, and the committee would love for you to join them. For tickets and more information, give the Club a call at 814-368-6159.

LIBRARY PRO-AM GOLF OUTING MONDAY, AUGUST 7 HOLIDAY VALLEY RESORT By Spencer Timkey Support your local library! The Ellicottville Memorial Library, built in 2003, gave the town a much-needed upgrade. Nestled at the bottom of the hill on Maples Road, the library offers summer reading programs for kids, high-speed Internet access and acts as a community center. A great way to make sure the library can continue to offer all these wonderful amenities … an annual golf tournament! Over 90 amateurs and 30 pros will congregate on Monday, Aug. 7 at Holiday Valley for the 15th annual Ellicottville Memorial Library Pro-Am. Since the tournament began, it has raised over $70,000 for the library - including a $100,000 pledge fulfilled by Holiday Valley. Professionals come from all over the area to play, and are allowed to bring one amateur from their home club. The rest of the field is filled in by local amateurs. Head sponsors for this year’s tournament include Great Valley Builders Supply, Dr. Joe Villardo at Ellicottville Dental, Clark, Patterson & Lee and Rupp, Basse, Pfalzgraf & Cunningham Attorneys, while supplemental sponsors include John & Anne Northrup, Villaggio, Weed Ross Insurance Agency and Northtown Orthopedics.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 18 NORTH UNION STREET OLEAN, NY With the dust now settled after two long years of construction to North Union Street, The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce and city leadership are inviting the community out for a night on the town. Working with the city and members of the business community, the Chamber is announcing a new event to do just that. Dubbed “StrOlean,” the event aims to bring folks to the downtown shopping district for an evening of fun. StrOlean will feature a host of events - such as mini concerts and outdoor movie screenings - up and down North Union Street for the community to enjoy.

WINNER!

“For two years those of us living in the greater Olean area were all affected in one way or another by North Union Street’s overhaul. Our downtown businesses especially bore the brunt of the construction,” said Larry Sorokes, the Chamber’s CEO. “Similar to Farm City Days from decades ago, our hope is that StrOlean will encourage the community to spend time in downtown Olean. We’re also encouraging the merchants who line North Union to take advantage of the event by staying open a little later or offering meal specials and sales.”

The library relies on donations and events like this to keep their doors opened. For more information on sponsorship or to get yourself signed up to play in the event, call Holiday Valley’s PGA Professional Steve Carney at 716-699-3939.

FESTA ITALIANA August 10-12 1 Festival Way, Bradford, PA Celebrate the City of Bradford’s Italian Heritage. Enjoy authentic and homemade Italian food along with live musical entertainment nightly, and children’s games and rides. There will also be a beer tent, a live magic show on Saturday at 4pm and a meatball eating contest! 814-362-2074 MT. JEWETT SWEDISH FESTIVAL August 11-13 West Main Street, Mt. Jewett, PA Residents take pride in their Swedish heritage and celebrate the Swedish Festival every year with traditional music, dance, ethnic foods, and craft vendors. Search “Mount Jewett Swedish Festival” on Facebook to see all the exciting activities planned. 814-558-7642

The Chamber is working with the city to allow business that aren’t located in downtown Olean to set up booths along the street that evening. StrOlean is also a means for the community to show off what downtown Olean has to offer to those from out of town, as it coincides with the start of the annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. “The Macker tournament brings thousands to our city, with many participants from out of town,” Sorokes said. “StrOlean provides the perfect opportunity for our visitors to see what Olean has to offer.”
