By Louisa Benatovich In a world so full of bustle and noise, there are few places left where the mind can be truly quiet. Ellicottville’s best-kept secret, the Nannen Arboretum, is a place for locals and visitors alike to escape the cacophony of this ever-moving world. A little piece of heaven situated just off Parkside Drive, the Arboretum is the perfect place to take a walk, read, or simply sit among all of nature’s glory. While the wind rustles through the pine trees and the fish gently splash in the catch-and-release pond, just 15 minutes in the Arboretum can make any problem seem miles away. Though the Arboretum is ideal for misty early-morning walks, it exists for much more than leisure activities. “If you go to the Arboretum, it’s a collection,” says Nan Miller, long-time volunteer and vice-president of the Nannen Arboretum Society. “There are all sorts of trees in different situations - in a swamp, in clay soil, on a hill,” she explains. “It’s a collection of trees and shrubs to teach people what will grow in their own garden.” Miller, who became a Master Gardener in 2001, was first introduced to the Arboretum when she was searching for the perfect tree. Her Salamanca garden, having such a wet, clay-filled soil, couldn’t sustain anything she planted. “The Arboretum pointed me in the right direction,” says Miller. “Now I have a thriving sequoia in my garden.” The land for the beloved Arboretum was donated to the Cornell Cooperative Extension in 1958 by local businessman, conservationist, and political leader William O. Nannen. In 1965, the Soil and Water Conservation Service constructed a pond (now named Lake Nipponica) to demonstrate the body of water’s agricultural and farming benefits. It wasn’t until 1974 that John Ploetz, expert horticulturalist and speaker-for-the-trees, began to develop the property. Inspired by events in his own life, Ploetz carefully chose every tree, flower, and fixture in the Arboretum to tell a story. From his exploits in Guam, Ploetz brought back the idea for beautiful log benches to adorn the grounds. A lover of Japanese culture, Ploetz constructed the gorgeous Ryoanji Temple Stone Garden and the idyllic Amano Hashidate Bridge. In memory of his close friendship with Corn Planter the Indian, Ploetz erected a glorious maple tree. Ploetz also planted four London pine trees to honor the four chaplains that went down with the H.M.S. Dorchester in WWII. Today, many choose to plant trees and flowers, or dedicate bricks or benches in memory of a lost loved one. In the Ellicottville community, the Nannen Arboretum holds the hearts of so many. C

Business Growth: It’s a Wonderful Thing
MUD, SWEAT N’ GEARS TAKES ON THE SOUTHTOWNS Second location coming to East Aurora
THE VILLAGGIO TEAM OPENS MERCATO OLEAN Fresh, clean eating: Build your own pasta, pizza, salad and more
@mudsweatgears
@FB: Mercato Olean

By Spencer Timkey
As the saying goes, “success breeds success” and Ellicottville’s Mud, Sweat n’ Gears is a prime example of what happens when hard work and dedication pay off and grow into something that has brand awareness and longevity. Recently, opportunity came knocking at the doors of the Ellicottville staple, and owners Kimberly Reading and Miguel Azcarate (pictured above) determined that it was too good of one to pass up.
Good, clean eating. A ripe market. The support of a community. When you’ve got an idea that makes sense, sometimes you just have to go with it. And even when the odds seem constantly stacked against you, overwhelming passion and a don’t-quit attitude produces the product you envisioned. Welcome to Mercato.
The opportunity that was presented to them was that of expansion. That’s right, Mud, Sweat n’ Gears will now have a second location. Reading and Azcarate have purchased Aurora Action Sports/The Ski Rack in order to create a Mud, Sweat n’ Gears presence in East Aurora. Located at 669 Main Street, the store is in a very desirable, high-traffic area and has a close proximity to some East Aurora staples like the historic Aurora Theater, Elm Street Bakery, and Videler’s 5 & 10. “For a long time, Aurora Action Sports/The Ski Rack has been one of the only specialty ski and snowboard shops in the southtowns,” said Reading. “The store has had a loyal customer base for many years. By slightly adjusting the product range and services of the existing shop to reflect the demographic of the area, we see tons of potential for Mud, Sweat n’ Gears.”
The brainchild of Villaggio General Manager Spencer Murray, Olean’s Mercato is the Pitillo family’s latest restaurant endeavor. Now open at 213 N. Union Street, Mercato aims to become a go-to lunch spot for the Olean community. Serving pasta, pizza, salad and a myriad of other options, it’s the perfect addition to downtown Olean’s recent renaissance. “It feels so great to finally be open,” Murray said. “It’s kind of surreal. We’ve been working so hard at this for so long, and it was an unbelievable feeling opening the doors. The goal was to create something new and fresh and exciting, and we think we’ve done that.” Murray, originally of Williamsville, cut his teeth in the restaurant business in Rhode Island before returning to help open and manage Villaggio in Ellicottville in 2016. And while Mercato was his idea, it was the blessing of Villaggio/Osteria 166 owners Nick & Kendra Pitillo that set the plan in motion.
That demographic and loyal customer base was a prime factor in deciding to purchase the store. Reading and Azcarate loved the East Aurora location because of the community, which was quaint and booming with authenticity and a love for skiing and snowboarding.
“At the heart, we’re a small family business,” he said. “Osteria 166 (the Pitillo’s Buffalo restaurant) and Villaggio are home, and that’s where people know us from. We’ve established those to the point where people know what to expect from us food and service-wise. And even though Mercato is an entirely different concept, we want to keep everything tied together so there’s that relationship.”
In order to translate the success of the Ellicottville shop over to the new store, there will be a slight staff shuffle taking place to make sure things start off on the right foot in East Aurora. “With the help of Pat Wallace, Miguel and I will oversee operations at both locations,” stated Reading. “Page Nowicki, who has been working with us full time since 2013, will be managing the new store. We are currently hiring full and part-time seasonal positions for both locations.”
That relationship begins with the workers, who were personally trained by Murray and other key members of the Villaggio/Osteria staff. Out of nowhere, the cashier will yell “What do we say?” and the workers reply with a resounding “Thank you!” It’s that type of unique, family-driven service that has made the other restaurants so successful. You’re made to feel like a part of the family.
Fans of the original Mud, Sweat n’ Gears will see a similar theme in the branding, product selection, and of course the top-notch service when they come into the East Aurora location. But the new shop will not be an exact replica of the Ellicottville store. Both Reading and Azcarate were very fast to point out that they are very excited about developing the personality of the new store and watching it evolve with a new customer base. Those who previously frequented the East Aurora store will notice quite a few aesthetic changes as well. “We are going to do a complete facelift of the exterior of the building in the next few weeks,” said Azcarate. “We are finishing the interior, which we completely gutted and renovated, and then we’ll be moving on to the exterior.” The new shop will be hosting a sale September 6-9 during the always popular Taste of East Aurora. Those clamoring for the upcoming ski season will be able to get deals on season rentals and tuning through the month of September. A Grand Opening Celebration is planned for sometime in October. The new location is scheduled to open on Friday, August 31. The shop will be open daily but the hours will fluctuate throughout the season. Fall hours are currently set to be 10am-6pm. You can call the shop at 716-652-7180. Both the East Aurora and the Ellicottville stores will operate under the existing social media platforms and information on both can be found at www.mudsweatgears.com.
Mercato is food that’s fast, but don’t call it fast food. When you walk in, you’re given a limitless number of options - build your own salad and pasta, personal or family-sized pizzas, grain bowls and more. For the people of Olean, it’s a nice reprieve from the rows of fast food chains that line the streets. “We’ve got a lot of new, young staff, but they’re already doing such a great job,” Murray said. “Right now, the key is taking it slow and making sure the simple things are done correctly. We want to create consistency, so when people come in they’re given the same level of value, service and food that they had the first time. Our guests have been unbelievable with the feedback, and we’re listening and learning.” The simple things - getting orders right, creating a vibe, providing fresh, clean eating - are all of the things Mercato has a head start on, thanks to the years of experience amassed by Murray and the Pitillos. When the basics are concrete, they’ll expand into more grab-and-go options, soups, and other different offerings. Not only has Mercato brought a fresh, new vibe to Olean since opening on August 2nd, it’s already creating a significant economic impact - more than 20 people are on the payroll. “For us, it’s about having fun,” Murray said. “We want the employees to have fun, we want the customers to have fun. The experience is everything, and that’s providing fast, fresh, fun food. We’re thrilled to be a part of the Olean community, and can’t wait to see where it goes from here.” Mercato Olean is open Monday through Saturday 11am-8pm. Eat-in or take-out is available. For more information, head to mercatoolean.com or Mercato Olean on Facebook.

MARY KAY SCHRECKENGOST
A MASTER OF IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING
FROM PAINTER TO WOOL APPLIQUE @Louisa Benatovich
39
@Plough Fine Arts
@Clara Kosinski
Before disposable film, before cameras, before selfie-sticks and iPhones, the capturing of a moment was sacred. The painstaking hours to detail the shadows of a monarch’s nose or paint the smudgy pastels of a starry night were priceless. A painting was the only way to capture life being lived. Art linked the present to the past; it humanized what came before. Now, with the demands of a fast-paced world, few of these artists remain. Everyone seems too busy to spend hours on a single moment. Todd Plough is one such artist that breaks the mold. With a paintbrush and canvas, he makes one moment last forever. For him, art is communication. It doesn’t require a language. It doesn’t speak to a particular class or creed. Art is universal. Todd, who grew up in the area, uses his gifts to capture the small, oft-missed natural beauty of Western New York. A master of impressionist painting, Todd can turn a single landscape into a symphony of feeling. “I believe nature is art because to me there is nothing more visually stunning than God’s disposable masterpieces,” says Plough. “Frost on a window, ripples in the water, prisms created by ice and sun cast against a stone wall ... who has ever created anything so marvelous? My paintings are a pale homage but I try my best to share the visions I’ve been blessed to experience.” Plough, who lived in Tennessee before returning to WNY, has a hard time choosing which of God’s masterpieces he most enjoys honoring. “My favorite place on Earth - that’s not a fair question,” he laughs. “My favorite environment would be in the forest almost anywhere. There is so much life and an endless variety of subjects and sounds - it’s where I feel most alive.” Though Todd enjoys cooking, hiking, kayaking, and the occasional hunting trip, painting holds a special place in his heart. “The act of painting for me is an exploration - a journey to a visual experience that I haven’t been to before,” he explains passionately. “If I knew what a painting was going to look like in the end, I probably wouldn’t do it at all. I want my work to be like a door to dreams left open for others to see into. For me, painting is an open prayer that I am allowed to make incarnate. I am just the receiver and hands, not the actual creator, but rather an echo of what I hear and see.” A teacher at heart, Todd encourages others to echo their own sentiments on canvas. Whether it’s providing an easel for passers-by out front of Ameri-Can in downtown Ellicottville, or having a full-time art student, Todd infectiously shares his love of the craft. “My advice to aspiring painters: know yourself,” he advises. “The life is not for quitters, anyone can quit. It can be an amazing life but you MUST be a person who digests critical comments and allow them to polish your craft. Eventually it all turns to praise. Also, paint for yourself. Paint to fill your heart’s toy box, not just to try and make marketable work. The motivation of painting to please yourself comes through in the work. I guarantee it makes all the difference. Above all, embrace your alienation. No one ever became famous by being like someone else.” “If you get to a plateau in your work, take a couple lessons,” he continues. “Often a person can give you a single sentence of advice that changes everything and opens an entirely new dimension you didn’t realize you had within you. That’s exhilarating!” Alongside the unavoidable criticism that comes with showing a piece of yourself to the world, being a true artist changes something inside of you. “You can tell that you really are an artist if you get cranky when you don’t get to work - unlike most other professions. My wife Darlene tells me she likes me best when I’m painting. As an artist, you are your job. It’s not something you go to, it is you and that, my friends, you can take anywhere.” Todd concluded by saying, “An artist must speak every language silently and with the might of the Ocean, but to succeed you must start and never look back. Above all this, remember that kindness matters more than all the art ever created. An artist needs to leave the world a better place and that means making others’ lives better. Great art is one beautiful way to accomplish that very thing.”
For Mary Kay Schreckengost, art is the spice of life. It is the cayenne pepper to a bland day. It is the splash of color in an otherwise grey reality. The beauty of the art world, Schrekengost says, is that there’s room for absolutely everyone. Though today you rarely see her without her porcelain dyeing buckets and piles of wool, it took Mary Kay a good while to find her calling. It wasn’t until her last year of school that she attended her first art class. Discovering herself to be a masterful painter, Mary Kay took her paintbrush to whatever she could find. She painted scenes on watering cans, frames, old bits of wood, and detached doors. She just couldn’t get enough. She began to tole paint, selling her holiday-themed items in local stores. After lots of experimenting, Mary Kay discovered her true passion - wool applique. “I like to enjoy what I’m doing,” she says. “I don’t like to have to think and that’s what wool applique is. It’s just mindless sewing. You get to sit, relax, and create.” With a base medium of either cotton or wool, applique focuses on a soft-hued representation of nature. Muted blues, deep reds, and vibrant oranges are used to evoke applique’s autumnal Americana feel. From pillows to bed spreads to small shirt-detailing, wool applique adds some homespun charm to any material. Mary Kay’s favorite part of the process is the dyeing. “It’s like a cooking recipe,” she says. “You add salt, hot water, and dye to a pot. Then, you put your wool in. It’s fun because you never know exactly how the color will turn out.” The beauty of wool is its ability to be re-dyed. “If you don’t like the color, just put it back in the pot,” Mary Kay laughs. Often, though, the wool dryer reveals an unexpected masterpiece. “Color inspires me,” says Mary Kay. “The way it makes me feel. I’ll see a tree or some flowers and immediately want to start a new project. It’s hard for me to stick with one thing until the end,” she chuckles, gesturing to a pile of half-completed pieces. In her cinnamon-scented home, Schreckengost has a beautiful workshop dedicated to her passion. With a custom-made wood countertop to accommodate the grandkids and cabinets overflowing with neatly folded wool, Mary Kay’s sanctuary is a crafter’s heaven. “I always tell the girls, don’t buy any wool, come to me,” she laughs. “I don’t know what I’m going to do with it all.” Mary Kay slowly grew her collection by thrifting from local stores and dyeing her finds. When asked, she can remember what every detail of her pieces was in its past life, whether a wool coat or outdated cardigan. “Wool applique doesn’t have to stop with pillows and blankets,” Schreckengost explains. “You can dress up an old sweater or add some color to a denim shirt. I once embroidered cute little pumpkins across the neckline of a shirt and someone liked it so much, I just gave it to her. I can always make another one!” Mary Kay, having lived in the area her whole life, loves to use her art to bring the community together. She often hosts small applique gatherings at her Salamanca home and, occasionally, even teaches introductory classes. “I was born and raised on Bucktooth Run,” she says. “I married the boy next door and raised my family here. I often joke with my close friend, who married her boy next door, we didn’t know we could go to town to find a husband!” Schreckengost, who also dabbles in furniture design and landscaping, has used her gifts to transform her house into a home. Her beloved workshop and outdoor “She-Shed” are where she sews, paints, or works on local commissions. She sells her applique work at craft fairs and “The Rusty Rooster” in Cattaraugus, but rarely for any profit. “I just hope someone sees something in my work, gets an idea, and wants to try it themselves,” she smiles. “I always love to introduce people to what could be their lifelong passion.”

STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM STRATEGIES By Kristina Barlow, N.D., C.S.T.
Are you prepared for this autumn and winter’s Battle of the Immune System versus Infectious Bugs? You know and have experienced the carnage. So much time, energy and money has been spent on medical bills, medications, supplements and gadgets plus the loss of time at work or school. Being sick takes a great toll on the body mentally, emotionally, physically, relationally and financially. September is the perfect month to PREPARE your body for optimal Health and Wellness! The immune system is incredibly complex and fascinating, consisting of the thymus (produces T-cells), bone marrow (produces white blood cells), spleen (filters the blood, recycles red blood cells, stores white blood cells), tonsils, (traps germs and produces antibodies to kill them), lymphatic system (transports white blood cells all over the body and removes toxins and waste), adenoids, (produces antibodies to kill germs), appendix (protects good bacteria) and white blood cells. White blood cells and natural killer cells are part of the innate immune system, the focus of this article. (See Graph-Innate, Bloodbourne). Spend some time, energy and money on supporting these organs and cells this fall and winter. You will be amazed! We hear it all the time in the store and with our clients. Building the innate immune system, gently cleansing the body, stimulating the body’s vital force and offering direct aids as needed will allow you and your family to enjoy this autumn and winter (ski season - hooray!) Below is a simple protocol that will increase the effectiveness of the immune system, increase the body’s energy, cleanse the small and large intestine, improve the good bacteria in the colon and prepare you in the moment when a microbial infection begins to set in. These products and therapies have been used for years with excellent success.

WHAT IS IMMUNE STIMULATOR?
Immune Stimulator is a nonspecific immune booster increasing white blood cell count, enhancing antibody activity and improving white blood cell function. This combination of beta glucans, arabinogalactans, colostrum, cordyceps, reishi mushrooms and maiitake mushrooms helps the body to kill viruses, bacteria, fungus and cancer cells. Beta glucans (200 mg per capsule) are polysaccarides found in the cell walls of fungi and have been shown in studies to improve the function of macrophages and natural killer cells. Colostrum or the “First Milk” of cows is full of antibodies, immune factors, nutrients, fat, protein, good bacteria and white blood cells to support our immune systems. Immune Stimulator is used for prevention, mild colds and severe infections.
WHAT IS TRIGGER IMMUNE? Trigger Immune is a Traditional Chinese Medicine formula for increasing the effectiveness of a weakened immune system,

It is a blood and energy tonic that helps people who is fatigued or run-down. The main ingredient is Astragalus, which is excellent for the immune system and the adrenals glands. The second ingredient is ginseng. This can be used for prevention, energy, recovery from chemotherapy and with colds or flu.
WHAT IS ULTIMATE ECHINACCEA? Echinacea roots have the ability to stimulate the innate immune system in order to fight infections, even very serious infections. This product combines the roots of three different Echinacea plants. Many recent studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of Echinacea. 50 YEARS OF FUN!
Pumpkinville readies for a new season with a few new and exciting activities!
Iconic doesn’t begin to describe it. Ask anyone who’s visited Ellicottville and they’ll tell you about the must-visit, world-renowned Fall destination that is Pumpkinville. This year marks its 50th in business, and the Pawlowski family has plenty of fun in store. By Spencer Timkey If you haven’t been there, you know someone who has. As fun as it is iconic, Pumpkinville is the type of place that has stood the test of time. So it should be no surprise that this year marks the farm’s 50th in operation, providing everlasting memories for everyone that walks through its gates. One of the most impressive things about the farm is its ability to draw visitors back every year, and that’s a testament to the Pawlowski family’s dedication to creating a fun, family environment. Annual additions keep Pumpkinville fresh, but don’t give it a theme park vibe. A down-home feel blended with a myriad of activities (for both kids and adults) is why it continues to be one of western New York’s must-visit places. “Every year we have something new,” owner Diane Pawlowski said. “We’re extremely proud of what we’ve done for this year. We’ve been working on it since February, and we’re just putting the finishing touches on it … just in time for our September 15th opening.” The referenced addition Pawlowski spoke of is the Pumpkin Patch Playground. Visitors can expect Yee Haw Hill, which has three massive slides. And Barnyard Ball, where two buildings house football, baseball and basketball games (again, one for kids and one for adults). By building it themselves, they can turn vision into reality. “What’s new this year? Is a question we get all the time,” she said. “So we have to strive to always do new things. We’re also going to have Mister Twister Barns. Think of it like this - when you see someone walking on a tube, and you can twist it as fast as you can. Just another new thing that we’re adding.” Last year’s addition might be the best one at the farm. The Pawlowskis installed a row of pneumatic apple launchers, and if you’re not careful, you’ll spend all day there. After buying a bucket of apples, you load them into the gun (which isn’t really a gun - it’s more of a turret) and fire them into a field set up with targets. Talk about unleashing your inner kid. After you’ve gone Rambo with the apple launchers, head over to the helicopter pad and take flight to peep the explosive western New York fall colors. Since Pumpkinville isn’t located in or directly outside of the Village, you’ll have an uninterrupted view of the trees and foliage. (Helicopter rides take place on weekends from late-September through the end of October, weather depending.) While you’re busy being a kid, don’t forget about all of the actual stuff for kids to do. The train takes you around the farm, the Pumpkin Jumpin’ Pillows are like mini trampolines, and hayrides are always a favorite. Pumpkinville also boasts a 6-acre corn maze, and scattered throughout are different stands where you draw an individual piece of a pumpkin. When you find all of them, match what you’ve got on the master list at the start. Right in the center of the farm is the “Goat-Tel” - a three-story building that goats climb around on. There’s a massive pumpkin patch where you can pick your own, or choose from a row that they’ve got already. Pumpkins range from small (apple size) to extra large (you need a truck to transport it), and there are always good ones to choose from. Pumpkinville also sells painted pumpkins, with a variety of awesome artwork. Throughout all the activity additions and focus on family fun, the Pawlowskis have maintained one key piece - the food. All of the pies, world-famous pumpkin doughnuts and candy apples are made in-house. They also sell a variety of products from local maple farms and other vendors. “All of the food is made in the bakery,” Pawlowski said. “People wait all year for the pumpkin doughnuts. And we make the apple and pumpkin pies from scratch, as well as the fudge and caramel for the candy apples. Those are especially good when you pair them with apple cider from the Cider Mill (hot or cold). The BBQ pit will be open on the weekends, and Kettle Korn is always a big hit.” “We’re celebrating 50 years of family fun this year,” she said. “We’re looking forward to seeing all of the familiar faces of our local and loyal visitors. It’s the support of those that come back every year that we’re so thankful for, and we can’t wait to show them what we’ve got for this year.” Pumpkinville will be open daily Sept. 15 through October 31st from 9am-7pm; parking and admission are free! Wristbands are available for most activities, and some require an additional charge. The farm is located at 4844 Sugartown Road, Great Valley, NY. For more information, head to pumpkinville.com or find them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. *Writer’s Note: I hadn’t been to Pumpkinville since I was a kid, and went last year with my fiancee. We had an absolute riot, and can’t wait to go back this year. My nephew will be a year-old in September, and my mom is downright giddy to take him. Just goes to show you - no matter what age you are, you are going to have a good time.*

W.I.L.M.A Exposition spotlights local manufacturers and artisans of Cattaraugus County Rustic Originals will return to this year’s venue with handcrafted signs, country primitive decor, Christmas ornaments and more.
Olean, New York Come Tour, Visit & Play! @Enchanted Mountains
By Mary Heyl Enchanted Mountains, Cattaraugus County’s tourism organization, is looking forward to hosting the sixth annual We Invite Local Manufacturers and Artisans (W.I.L.M.A.) event on October 20-21. This buy-local exposition takes place at the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds in Little Valley and is the perfect opportunity to learn more about what makes Cattaraugus County so unique. From handcrafted gifts to delicious foods, W.I.L.M.A. weekend has everything you need to kick off a new season and prepare for the holidays! W.I.L.M.A. is more than an acronym, as anyone who has participated in the event knows. It’s also the name given to the woolly bear that kicks off the event each year. Since the expo takes place during woolly bear caterpillar season, the event begins with one of the county’s legislators finding a woolly bear (Wilma, the woolly bear) at the fairgrounds and predicting the severity of the coming winter, based on the size of the caterpillar’s reddish middle stripe.

Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce
Although W.I.L.M.A. is the ideal venue for area artisans and crafters to get their product into the hands of local shoppers, Enchanted Mountains has opened the event to any businesses located in the county. Retail shops, manufacturers and direct selling businesses are invited to participate this year in order to increase the variety of vendors at W.I.L.M.A. Also new for 2018, W.I.L.M.A. will be featuring arts, culture and heritage demonstrations throughout the weekend. Visitors can look forward to demonstrations in woodcarving, basket weaving, yarn spinning and more. Interested demonstrators can still sign up to participate and stipends are available. W.I.L.M.A. is the perfect opportunity to shop for a distinctive gift for the upcoming holiday season, while keeping your money in the community. Shopping local is more than just avoiding long lines and crammed parking lots at the mall (although this is an added perk!). Buying locally-made products supports business owners and families right in the community, while also creating jobs and encouraging local tourism. Additionally, shopping local reduces transportation costs and lessens the environmental impact of these businesses. There’s something for everyone to enjoy at W.I.L.M.A. Favorite vendors over the years include Fat Root, LLC of Hinsdale, whose famous horseradish recipe has been passed down since the late 1800s. Fat Root is excited to participate in this year’s expo and promises to bring a variety of their mouth-watering (and potentially eye-watering) condiments, as well as maple syrup, honey and more.

Another popular booth at W.I.L.M.A. sells locally-made rubber mats in a variety of sizes and price ranges. New last year, the Kumbha Moon Soap Company makes small batch handcrafted soaps made with natural botanical ingredients with no synthetic dyes, fragrances or other chemical additives. Shoppers will love naturally fragrant ingredients like paprika, safflower, nettle leaf and more. Jodi Scanlan, owner of Rustic Originals, is looking forward to returning to W.I.L.M.A. with her handcrafted signs, country primitive décor, Christmas ornaments and more. Scanlan and her eye-catching signs – her best-selling items – are well-known throughout the area, as Rustic Originals participates in craft shows throughout western New York year ‘round. This year, her booth will also include handmade soaps and candles by Lora Farnham and Nichole Pennell’s baby onesies, dresses and bibs. W.I.L.M.A. takes place indoors in the 4H building at the fairgrounds, and will run from 10am-5pm on Saturday, Oct. 20 and from 11am-3pm on Sunday, Oct. 21. Admission is free and visitors can enjoy free apple cider and donuts. Vendor applications are still being accepted for the expo; visit www.enchantedmountains.com for an application and more information about W.I.L.M.A.

TRAIL CENTRAL
FALL FOLIAGE ROAD TRIPS By Linda Devlin, ANF Visitors Bureau
Autumn is the perfect time to enjoy the spectacular colors of fall as the leaves change to ruby red, blazing orange, and brilliant gold. The Allegheny National Forest Region, located in northwestern Pennsylvania, offers tree lined, two lane highways, where one car in front of you is considered heavy traffic. Prime color is usually the last two weeks of September and the first two weeks of October. TAKE IN THE FALL COLORS Joshua Hanson, District Silviculturist from the Allegheny National Forest-Bradford Ranger Station explains local fall color: “There are over 80 species of trees on the ANF. The upland hardwood type includes red maple, black cherry, black birch, yellow poplar, white ash, basswood, and/or cucumber tree. The Allegheny hardwood type includes a similar mix of species, but black cherry, white ash and yellow poplar are more abundant. The oak types include several oak species, e.g., Northern red oak, white oak, chestnut oak, black oak. The northern hardwoods include sugar maple, American beech, yellow birch, and hemlock.
KINZUA SKY WALK @ KINZUA BRIDGE STATE PARK
“Timing and quality of fall color varies by species. Maples reach peak color earlier in the season and are more vibrant than oaks. Folks can expect to see more color, and earlier color as they travel away from the Allegheny Reservoir and the major river corridors.”
KINZUA SKY WALK - KINZUA BRIDGE STATE PARK Absolutely Stunning! Wow! The Kinzua Sky Walk - “One of the top 10 most scenic skywalks in the world” - extends 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge at a height of 225 feet. The forested hillsides of the Kinzua Gorge are a patchwork quilt of many colors, courtesy of Mother Nature. There are two hiking trails at the park: Kinzua Creek Trail winds down the steep side of the gorge. The General Kane Trail is a shorter, more family friendly trail. The park offers picnic areas, hiking and biking trails, and a pavilion which may be rented for special occasions. More than one marriage proposal has happened on the Kinzua Sky Walk.
SMETHPORT MANSION DISTRICT
The Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center, on premise at the park, is a 11,000 sq. ft. building with two floors of interactive exhibits. The exhibits showcase the “can do spirit” of the men who built the first Kinzua Viaduct in 1882. A newly expanded gift shop - the PA Wilds Conservation Shop -features artisan works and handcrafted items from along the PA Wilds and the PA Route 6 Artisan Trails. Here you will find photography books on the Pennsylvania Wilds, the “Great Kinzua Bridge” book, handcrafted jewelry, pottery, and a variety of locally sourced food items. The Kinzua Center and gift shop is open daily from 8am-6pm. The Kinzua Bridge State Park, Kinzua Sky Walk, and Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center are located at 296 Viaduct Road in Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. The park is open daily from 8am to dusk. Admission is free.
SMETHPORT - A VICTORIAN VILLAGE Driving east or west on scenic Route 6 will take you through forestlands, farmlands and charming villages. Turning east from the park, travel Route 6 to the charming Victorian village of Smethport.
HAMLIN LAKE
Located in a valley surrounded by hillsides painted in bright fall colors, Smethport’s tree lined streetscapes, magnificent Victorian architecture, and Hamlin Lake are a colorful fall destination. Hamlin Lake is a refreshing location for relaxing. Cast a line, launch your kayak, or just bring a blanket and enjoy the view. The Goosechaser Trail, a ¾-mile trail around the banks of Marvin Creek and Hamlin Lake, is named for the Canadian geese which frequent the lake. The trail skirts the habitats of many wetland creatures, including waterfowl. Bring your binoculars … American bald eagles are often sighted at the lake.
@ANF Visitors Bureau
The self-guided walking tour of the Smethport Mansion District showcases a piece of Americana. Stroll past the architectural gems constructed by the Lumber Barons during the 1800s and early 1900s. Five of the mansions are “wedding mansions,” gifted to the bride and groom upon their marriage. The Smethport Mansion District Walking Tour Brochure is available at the kiosk in front of the McKean County Courthouse at 500 West Main Street.

Two of the mansions are now open as B&B’s - the Blackberry Inn and the Mansion District Inn. The PA Wilds Vacation Suites are the Hamlin Lake Haus, with views of Hamlin Lake, and the historic Sheriff Sartwell Mansion. Both offer one night, or extended stay options, with kitchens, a dining area and a living room. McKean County’s Old Jail Museum captures the history of the mustering at the courthouse steps by General Thomas Kane. This regiment became the storied group of sharpshooters “the Bucktails,” in the American Civil War. Displays on railroad history and local wildlife provide knowledge of the pioneer days of the county. Be sure to ask about the Dungeon - stories abound about it being haunted. Dine at the Corner Bistro, 437 W. Main Street. Their menu offers multiple styles of pizza, along with delicious steak and seafood. The bar will be glad to mix a signature cocktail or serve a draft.
PENNSYLVANIA SCENIC ROUTE 6 Driving Route 6 offers a glimpse into authentic America. Small towns, family owned shops and restaurants, and natural scenic beauty add to the lore of an area described by National Geographic as “one of the most scenic drives in America.” Traveling west on Route 6, plan a stop at the Mt. Jewett Tastee Freeze. They are known far and wide for their massive ice-cream cones (a small is usually all I can handle). The Swedish history of this town is prevalent. Kafe Sol serves many Swedish breads and home-baked items. Their cinnamon buns are just like the ones my grandmother used to make. Open for lunch and breakfast, the restaurant is a local favorite. Hikers will enjoy exploring the newly opened Knox & Kane Rail Trail. This trail is a 3.8-mile, non-motorized trail which connects Mt. Jewett to the Kinzua Bridge State Park. Fall colors are excellent along this hiking/biking trail. Restaurants and lodging, traveling further west along Route 6, include Barrelhouse Restaurant & Tavern and Lantz Corners Getaway in Lantz Corners, and the Spoonwood Inn between Lantz Corners and Kane. Both hotels have been recently remodeled, and they offer plenty of free parking for those who bring trailers full of big boy toys - motorcycles, ATVs or UTVs. Myers Motorsports, located at 3176 Route 219 just north of Lantz Corners, rents ATVs and UTVs and will trailer them to local year-round riding areas. Find more info at myersmotorsports.info.
KANE: A STAR IN THE FOREST Kane, “A Star in the Forest” is the doorway to the Allegheny National Forest and the Longhouse National Scenic Byway. This town features family-owned, non-chain shops and restaurants. Rich in local history, this is the town designed by General Thomas Kane, the builder of the first Kinzua Bridge in 1882, and a very famous General during the American Civil War. Folks interested in General Kane may stay at the Kane Manor which was his family home - but now is a B&B open to travelers. The McCleery Discovery Center at the Historic Kane Depot digs into the history of the Lobo Wolves. Dr. McCleery, the father of the endangered species movement, started one of the first sites in America dedicated to preserving an endangered species - the Great Plains Buffalo Wolves. Here you will find the largest collection of Buffalo Wolves artifacts in the world. Many artifacts of the cultural history of Kane are displayed; photographs and documents relating to the founding family, Thomas and Elizabeth Kane, local industry, businesses, and the railroad. Station Shop, located in this restored 1871 Kane RR station, offers PA Wilds arts & crafts, PA made wooden toys, local maple syrup, Kinzua Bridge handrail clocks, jewelry, and many other treasures. Artworks at the Summit, 54 North Fraley Street, is a local artisan co-op brimming with
fine paintings, hand-crafted wooden bowls, jewelry and custom dyed scarves. Email mryding210@comcast.net for more information. Feeling parched and hungry? Flickerwood Wine Cellars (“the Wine that Rocks”), Twisted Vine Beverage, and CJ Spirts (a craft distillery), offer tasting and touring. A few dining options include Texas Hot Lunch/4 Sons, a local family business since 1914. Serving the always popular Souvlaki Dinner with Greek salad, Pita Pleasers and Gyros or the famous Texas Hot – with a recipe that dates to 1914 – a plump, juicy hot dog with a squirt of mustard, sprinkled with onions, and smothered with their famous sauce. Newly opened is Table 105, a steak and seafood restaurant offering fresh and delicious options created from sustainable resources by Chef Coby Butler.
LONGHOUSE NATIONAL SCENIC BYWAY Drive the Longhouse National Scenic Byway from Kane via Rt. 321 heading north. This byway takes you along the eastern shoreline of the Allegheny Reservoir in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF). At the intersection of Rt. 321 and Rt. 59 you will find the Bradford Ranger Station, a great resource for information and maps. Developed overlooks along the byway include Rimrock Overlook and Kinzua Point along Rt. 59; return to the Ranger station, and head east to connect with Rt.219 north.
BRADFORD’S NATIONAL HISTORIC DISTRICT Driving north you will pass the Penn Brad Oil Museum which tells the storied history of the local independent oil producers and the Bradford Sands - the first million-dollar oil field in the world. Bradford is the largest community in McKean County. Start your visit with a stop at the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau Welcome Center, 80 E. Corydon Street, for maps and local information on trails and things to see and do. Pick up a free copy of Bradford’s National Historic District - a self-guided walking tour showcasing the eclectic architecture built by the Oil Barons during the late 1800s and the early 1900s. Main Street Movie House has a noteworthy marquee. The movie house is in the Hooker Fulton building, one of two major examples of Art Deco architecture on Main Street. Bookending Main Street is the second major Art Deco style building - Marilyn Horne Hall the site of the Marilyn Horne Museum. Bradford has a wide variety of restaurants, from casual (A Taste of the 80’s), to dining at Beefeaters Restaurant, once a Carnegie Library which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. The Zippo lighter was invented in Bradford; the Zippo/Case Museum showcases this history and includes a gift shop. At the Bromeley Family Theater, the Bradford Creative and Performing Arts and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford present a series of professional theater performances. Leave time to explore the extensive, 40-mile trail system. Trails vary from a scenic 1-mile hike at Marilla Reservoir which features a wooden covered bridge, a loop trail along Tunugwant Creek at Crook Farm, and a 3-day/2-night backpacking trail - Bullis Hollow Trail which connects to the ANF. Overnight accommodations in Bradford include the Mountain Laurel Inn B&B, and the Best Western Plus Bradford Inn, the Holiday Inn Express, and the Comfort Inn.
