Los últimos meses están siendo momento de intensa actividad. Primero por la reciente apertura del Hotel Bagués, un bijou hotel situado en plenas Ramblas de Barcelona que enlaza cultura y arte y que ha estado concebido sobre la base del estilo Art Nouveau inglés y escocés. Un palacio de 1850, magnífico exponente de la arquitectura clasicista romántica, que durante años se convirtió en la sede la joyería-taller Masriera y que ahora hemos convertido en un hotel de 5*. También hemos de mencionar la apertura de los apartamentos República, un nuevo concepto de apartamentos loft situados en el distrito industrial 22@, el Soho de Barcelona. The recent months have been bustling with activity. First, we recently opened the Hotel Bagués, a bijou hotel located right on Barcelona’s Ramblas which blends culture and art. The Hotel Bagués was designed based on English and Scottish Art Nouveau style, in which we converted a palace from 1850, the perfect exponent of classical romantic architecture, which served as the headquarters of the Masriera jewellery workshop for years, into a five-star hotel. We should also mention the opening of the República Apartments, a new concept of loft apartment located in the 22@ industrial district, Barcelona’s own Soho. Likewise, the partnership between Derby Hotels Collection and the Italian Boscolo Hotels is now in place, meaning that from now on our guests can enjoy a whole series of special perks at Boscolo Hotels. El palacio diseñado en 1850 por Josep Fonseré i Doménech, que durante años se convirtió en la sede la joyería-taller Masriera, es un magnífico exponente de la arquitectura clasicista romántica. Ahora, ya remodelado, alberga un hotel de 5 estrellas pensado sobre la base del estilo Art Nouveau inglés y escocés, una corriente denominada Liberty. Por ello, tanto en la recepción, como en el restaurante, la Sala-Museo y las habitaciones, está presente el influjo de su máximo representante, el arquitecto y diseñador Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The palace designed in 1985 by Josep Fonseré i Doménech, which for years was the site of the Masriera jewellery workshops, is a fantastic example of classical romantic architecture. Now remodelled, it houses a five-star hotel designed on the basis of the English and Scottish Art Nouveau style called Liberty. For this reason, both the reception area and the restaurant, museum hall and rooms show the influence of its top representative, architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Cada habitación (un total de 31) es una filigrana, y como tal, expone una pieza preciosa en su interior. Sea un gravado, una joya o uno de los dibujos de Masriera, dormir en una de las estancias constituye una inmersión al universo del artista. Por supuesto, esta categoría también se debe al mobiliario, una muestra de grandes cabeceras, sillas y sofás inspirados en Mackintosh; y a los materiales empleados, exuberantes en su mayoría: madera provinente de Madagascar, pizarra de la India y el pan de oro o mármol importado de Brasil. Sobresalen las Suites Jewel, situadas en la última planta: cuentan con una terraza propia con solárium, jacuzzi y una vista espectacular sobe Las Ramblas. En cuanto a los espacios comunes, se nota el tremendo esfuerzo que han hecho los diseñadores por integrarlos en un conjunto modélico. Destacan la terraza, una preciosa atalaya de 360º y el Restaurante Brasserie, en que los comensales disfrutarán de la mejor selección de productos hecha en el mismo Mercado de la Boquería; y la Sala-Museo Bagués Masriera, una exposición permanente en la que encontrarán colecciones que datan desde finales del siglo XIX hasta finales del S. XX.
Each room (a total of 31) is a gem, and as such each displays a precious piece inside, whether it be an engraving, a piece of jewellery or one of Masriera’s drawings. Sleeping in the rooms is like being immersed in the artist’s world. Of course, the category is also owing to the furniture, a display of great headboards, chairs and sofas inspired by Mackintosh; and to the materials used, most of them exuberant: wood from Madagascar, slate from India and gold leaf and marble from Brazil. The top-floor Suites Jewel are in a category all their own: they have their own terrace with a sunroom, Jacuzzi and spectacular views over Las Ramblas. As for the communal areas, you can see the tremendous effort made by the designers to integrate them into an exemplary whole. They feature the terrace, a precious 360º lookout point; and the Restaurant Brasserie, where diners can enjoy an exquisite selection of products from the nearby legendary Boqueria market; and the Bagués Masriera museum hall, a permanent display featuring collections that date from the late 19th to late 20th centuries.

Los diseñadores del Hotel Claris decidieron conservar la fachada del edificio que albergaba el antiguo Palacio Vedruna e incorporar una buena dosis de modernidad. El edificio de la antigua Clínica Pujol i Brull alberga el Granados 83, un hotel de 4 estrellas Superior muy cosmopolita, que se yergue orgulloso de su pasado fabril y que vive un presente marcadamente contemporáneo. Su estructura de hierro oxidado, que recuerda a los antiguos loft del Soho neoyorquino, contrasta con la fachada, hecha de piedra y cristal. Y qué decir de su decoración: los interiores no serían los mismo sin el acertado empleo del ladrillo, las maderas de Cebrano y Tamarindo, el mármol y el cuero. ¡Un estímulo para los sentidos! The building that used to house the Pujol i Brull Clinic now houses the Granados 83, a highly cosmopolitan four-star superior hotel which emerged proudly from its industrial past to live a clearly contemporary present. Its rusted iron structure, reminiscent of old Soho lofts in New York, contrasts with its facade, which is wrought in stone and glass. And of course the rooms: the interiors would not be the same without the skilful use of brick, zebra and tamarind wood, marble and leather. A real treat for the senses!

El Astoria es uno de esos establecimientos de la ciudad condal que ha adquirido la categoría de ‘clásico’. Su arquitectura, propia de la primera mitad del siglo XX, da paso a unas instalaciones muy funcionales, decoradas con buen gusto y sobriedad. Especialmente relevante en este aspecto es la gran colección de arte que alberga el hotel, que exhibe desde la colección de pintura del cronista Ricardo Opiso, hasta bustos modernistas o los cristales de Lalique. El Astoria dispone también de gimnasio y una piscina situado en la terraza-bar. The Astoria is one of those Barcelona hotels that has become a classic. “Revisar continuamente nuestro sistema de trabajo nos hace estar entre los mejores” ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que trabaja en Derby Hotels Collection? Hace un año y medio que trabajo para DHC, en el mismo Hotel Banke. ¿Cuál fue su primer encargo? Lo primero que hice fue poner en marcha el servicio de compras. Abrimos el Hotel en 2009 y tuvimos que reorientar el funcionamiento de cada departamento y descargarlos de ciertas responsabilidades para que pudieran llevar a cabo su propia función. ¿Y cómo ha evolucionado el hotel desde su inauguración? Ha crecido exponencialmente en cuanto a prestaciones, gracias sobretodo a los colaboradores y la metodología aplicada. ¿Qué consiste en...? Revisar continuamente nuestro sistema de trabajo, lo cual nos permite pertenecer al selecto grupo de hoteles de 4 estrellas de París (4 estrellas es la máxima calificación en París). ¿Con qué parte de su trabajo ha disfrutado más? Con todo: desde la búsqueda de nuevos productos, hasta la gestión de las cuentas y las visitas a los proveedores.
¿Qué busca una empresa como Derby cuando compra? Seguimos estos criterios: calidad, coste y diseño. Adquirimos productos de alta gama, importantes para mantener una harmonía con el hotel y el grupo. ¿Qué impresión cree que tienen los clientes? Lujo, exclusividad, arte, estos serían los elementos más sorprendentes para nuestros clientes. Pero sobretodo, se sienten bien porque los recibimos como a invitados. ¿Qué es lo que hace diferentes al Banke y a Derby Hotels Collection? Nuestro posicionamiento difiere de otras cadenas hoteleras porque mezclamos el arte clásico con una decoración muy contemporánea. Además, tenemos un concepto único que consiste en exponer las colecciones privadas de la familia Clos en nuestros hoteles, algo que nunca ha visto la clientela francesa en París. ¿Definiría al hotel Banke como un hotel boutique? ¡Absolutamente ! Estamos situados en el corazon de París, en un barrio dinámico y muy a la moda. El hotel ofrece una atmosfera íntima y tenemos un servicio que se anticipa a las necesidades del cliente. También es importante la línea gastronómica, ¿no? Sí, en el restaurante Josefin tenemos una carta que propone platos de influencia mediterránea y algunas especialidades catalanas modernizadas. Los productos son frescos, variados....¡un regocijo para los hedonistas! La buena cocina es placentera. Sí, y a mí me gusta cocinar, sé que no es muy original, pero es un pasa tiempos que me encanta. La cocina necesita un cierto sentido de la organización: hay que preparar un menú, gestionar un presupuesto… en definitiva, establecer un planning para que todos los comensales queden satisfechos. ¡Usted no descansa ni durmiendo! Confiese, si tuviera vacaciones, ¿a dónde viajaría? Iría a una isla paradisíaca en un gran hotel de lujo, con todo a mi disposición y sin teléfono móvil. Por supuesto, acompañado de mi pequeña familia.
Depuis combien de temps travaillez vous pour le Groupe Derby Hotels Collection? Cela fait prêt de 1 an et demi que je travail pour le groupe Derby Hotels Collection, au sein de l’hôtel Banke. Quelles furent vos premières activités au sein de cette entreprise? Mes Premières activités furent la mise en place du service des Achats. L’hôtel ayant ouvert en Avril 2009, il a fallu recentrer le fonctionnement de chaque service et décharger de cette tâche de manière à ce qu’ils puissent mener à bien leur propre fonction. Comment a évolué le Banke depuis sa création? L’hôtel a énormément grandi quand à ses prestations ; cela se doit surtout à ses collaborateurs et à la méthodologie appliquée. Cela consiste en? Une continuelle remise en cause des acquis permettant à l hôtel Banke de faire parti du fleuron des hôtels 4*S Parisien. Quelles partie de son travail a le plus aimé? Tout : de la recherche de nouveaux produits, la gérance des coûts et la visite chez les fournisseurs. Quelles partie de votre travail avez-vous le plus aimé? Nous suivos ces critères: qualité, coût et esthétisme. Nous acquérons produits importants en relations et harmonies avec l’hôtel et le groupe DHC, plus précisément haut de gamme. Comment vivent les clients l’ambiance Banke? Luxe, rareté et art, tel sont les impressions de notre clientèle. Mais au-dessus, ils se sentent bien parce que nous avons reçu comme invités. Quel est l’élément différentiel de l’Hôtel Banke et Derby Hotels Collection? Notre positionnement diffère des autres chaines hôtelières, avec des hôtels qui allie l’art ancien, une décoration design et contemporaine. Aussi, nous avons un concept unique qui consiste à mettre des collections privé de la famille Clos dans nos hôtels, ce que n’a jamais vu la clientèle Française à Paris.
Définiriez vous l’Hôtel Banke comme étant un hôtel boutique? Absolument! nous sommes situés en plein cœur de Paris, dans un quartier dynamique et branché. L’hôtel a un décor offrant atmosphère et sentiment d'intimité et nous avons un service qui anticipe les besoins dels clients. Il est également important de la ligne culinaires, non? Oui, dans le restaurant Josefin nous avons une carte qui a proposé plats d’influence Méridionale et quelques spécialités Catalane modernisées. Les produits sont de première fraîcheur, variées... Un bonheur pour les hédonistes! La bonne cuisine est agéable. Oui, et je tiens à cuire, je sais bien que ce n’est pas une activité très originale, mais ce passe-temps me convient parfaitement. La cuisine nécessite un certain sens de l’organisation: il faut préparer un menu, gérer un budget…en définitive, établir une planification pour tous ceux qui vous entourent sont satisfaits. Vous ne vos reposez jamais! Dites moi si vous étiez en vacances où iriez vous? Je voudrais aller à une île paradisiaque dans un bel hôtel de Luxe avec tout à disposition, sans téléphone portable. Tallin es resultado de una serie de acontecimientos históricos que la han convertido en lo que es hoy: un enclave clásico con tintes modernos, y sobre todo, un lugar de interés para los que aman la fortaleza de las murallas, la belleza de los jardines y la majestuosa presencia de las iglesias casi eternas. La ciudad data de principios del siglo XIII, cuando en terrenos de la Colina Toompea, fue fundada por los daneses, quienes la bautizaron con el nombre de taani linnus (fuerte danés). Ahora, pasear por sus calles es como vivir una aventura medieval en la que el casco antiguo es un personaje más. Fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1997 y está considerado como uno de los más bellos del mundo. En esta zona reina una torre gótica impactante: la iglesia de San Olaf. Data del año 1267 y está considerada como la construcción más alta de la
Edad medieval. Aunque llegó a medir 150 m, tras algunos incendios sufridos y sendas reconstrucciones, esta preciosa torre ha pasado a elevarse 123 m por encima del nivel del mar. Otra joya de este preciado tesoro es la Plaza del Ayuntamiento, un inmueble del barroco tardío, hecho de piedra caliza y que posee un campanario con el capitel negro. En lo alto del edificio se puede apreciar el Vana Tomas (El Viejo Tomás), una veleta que representa a un luchador medieval convertido en emblema del país. También forma parte de los ‘imprescindibles’ la Catedral Alexander Nevsky. Es de origen ortodoxo y se levanta orgullosa sobre la colina de Toompea. Usamos este apelativo porque ciertamente es uno de los elementos arquitectónicos más disonantes del centro histórico. Su eclecticismo es palpable, así como la imborrable influencia zarista que determina sus formas.

Tallinn is the result of a series of historical events that made it what it is today: a classical enclave with modern tinges, and most importantly a place of interest for anyone who loves the strength of walls, the beauty of gardens and the majesty of almost timeless churches. The city dates from the early 13th century, when it was founded by the Danish on Toompea Hill. The Danes christened it Taani Linnus (Danish fort). Now, strolling through its streets is like experiencing a mediaeval adventure in which the old quarter is yet another character. It was declared a UNESCO Human Heritage Site in 1997 and is regarded as one of the loveliest in the world. In this area, an impressive Gothic tower reigns over everything: the church of Saint Olaf. It dates from 1267 and is considered the tallest structure dating from the Middle Ages. Even though at one point it measured 150 metres tall, after several fires and subsequent reconstructions this precious tower now soars 123 metres above sea level. Another gem in this precious treasure is the Town Square, featuring the Town Hall, a late Baroque building made of limestone with a belfry that is surmounted with a black capital. High on the building you can see Vana Tomas (Old Thomas), a vane that represents a mediaeval warrior who has become the emblem of the country. Other must-sees include the Alexander Nevsky cathedral. It is Orthodox in origin and rises up proudly atop Toompea Hill. It is certainly one of the most dissonant architectural elements in the historic city centre. Its eclecticism is palpable, as is the clear tsarist influence that determines its forms.

En este sentido, el último que ha evolucionado es el Restaurante East 47, del Hotel Villa Real. En la planta inferior del local, perfecta para tomar un aperitivo o un cóctel, la auténtica estrella es la ingeniosa carta de Fórmulas, con la que los responsables de cocina recomiendan una tapa y una bebida. Básicamente, se trata de armonizar sensaciones, creando la mejor combinación posible entre textura y sabor. De este modo, el cliente podrá tomar un Palacio de Menade Verdejo D.O. Rueda (vino Blanco), mientras degusta una ración de Ostra Natural o Salmón Marinado al Eneldo. Por la noche, los cócteles toman el protagonismo, tanto los clásicos Dry-Martini, Manhattan o Long Island, como los más rompedores: Caipirinha de sake o el Bloody Real. En la planta superior, los comensales podrán disfrutar de la carta del East 47, que esencialmente mediterránea, está salpicada con algunos toques de sofisticación de gran calidad. Aunque por encima de todo, y por recomendación del chef Joaquín de Felipe, cabe destacar el cochinillo de Castilla y León con revolcón. In this sense, the latest to evolve is the East 47 restaurant at the Hotel Villa Real. On the lower floor of the restaurant, perfect for appetisers or a cocktail, the real star is the ingenious Formulas menu in which the chefs recommend a tapa and a paired drink. Basically, the goal is to harmonise sensations by creating the best combination possible between texture and flavour. In this way, guests may sample a Palacio de Menade Verdejo D.O. Rueda (white wine) as they sample a portion of raw oysters or dill-marinated salmon. At night, the cocktails take centre stage, both the classics like Dry Martinis, Manhattans and Long Islands and the more ground-breaking Caipirinhas made with sake or the Bloody Reals. On the upper floor, diners can enjoy the menu of the East 47 which, though essentially Mediterranean, has a several outstanding touches of sophistication. But above all, and it’s a chef’s recommendation, we must emphasize “el cochinillo de Castilla y León con revolcón”. Chano Domínguez, gaditano de los pies a la cabeza, vive a caballo entre Vallgorguina y Barcelona. Después de 30 años de carrera, se atreve a reinterpretar a los grandes clásicos de nuestro país en su nuevo disco ‘Piano Ibérico’. Se lo puede permitir, por talento y porque aún tiene la suficiente humildad como para reconocer que uno siempre está aprendiendo. Es el máximo representante del latin jazz y uno de los mejores pianistas del mundo. Y eso que empezó tarde… Empecé con 8 años tocando la guitarra flamenca, que era el instrumento más cercano en Cádiz y el que mi familia podía permitirse. ¿Y el piano? Descubrí los teclados a los 15, pero no me lo empecé a tomar en serio hasta los 20. Imagino que tampoco pudo pagarse unas clases. No, ¡soy autodidacta! Y creo que justamente eso es lo que me ha dotado de este lenguaje particular que expreso con el piano. Por otro lado, eso me ha mermado en la formación clásica, tan importante para el instrumento que toco. Su nuevo trabajo, Piano Ibé“Cuando tocamos temas rico, es casi una de Miles Davis con el redención. Seguro que Albéniz y Manuel de Falla son buenos maestros. ¡Para mí son los primeros pianistas flamencos! ¿Cómo un oyente consumado de Rock & Roll se convierte en el estandarte del jazz aflamencado? Desde los años 70, cuando empezamos con el grupo ‘Cai’, he grabado discos de rock sinfónico tamizado por las bulería y las alegrías, ritmos que se usan en Cádiz de una manera muy natural. ¿Se considera usted un pionero? Me siento pionero de lo mío, ¡de eso soy ‘pionerísimo’! Simplemente, el hecho de ser autodidacta me ha dotado de un universo musical un poco singular. Ha compartido ese universo con auténticas estrellas. Con Vicente Amigo, Cañizares, Paco de Lucía, Blas Córdoba… ¡No se olvide de Wynton Marsalis! ¿Se puede ya retirar tranquilo? ¡No, no! Siento la necesidad de seguir trabajando y seguir descubriendo nuevas maneras de
expresarme a través de la música…no entiendo el parar. Le creo porque sé que dentro de poco se va a Alemania y a Estados Unidos. ¿Le acogerán bien? Nos acogen con mucho fervor, porque vienen oyendo el jazz y el flamenco desde hace muchísimo tiempo. Por ejemplo, ahora acabo de grabar un disco en directo en el Jazz Standard de Nueva York. Cuando tocamos temas de Miles Davis con el compás flamenco, ellos no saben qué pasa porque se encuentran con un ritmo endiablado. Y al mismo tiempo, como para ellos son temas clásicos, se sienten muy implicados. ¿‘Calle 54’ fue un trampolín? ¡Cómo no! Recuerdo que cuando Fernando empezó a diseñar la película yo tocaba mucho en el Café Central. Lo veía entre el público y un día me contó: “Chano, voy a hacer una película de latin jazz y te quiero meter en ella”. ¿Se sorprendió? No le daba mayor importancia, pero cuando aquello se hizo realidad, me di cuenta de la increíble cantidad de energía que había invertido para dar a los músicos de jazz la plataforma más imponente que te puedas imaginar, que es el celuloide. Ponernos en la gran pantalla, con los mejores medios técnicos del momento, en el Estudio de la Calle 54…creo que Fernando Trueba es más melómano que cinéfilo. Permítame que le dé otro nombre 59 propio: Enrique Morente. Lo primero que me viene a la cabeza es su cante por seguirillas, que me encantaba. Es un referente para el flamenco de ayer, el de hoy y el futuro, porque supo estar en la tradición más ortodoxa y darle la vuelta para hacer discos como ‘Misa flamenca’ u ‘Omega’. Su fallecimiento es una pérdida incalculable para el mundo del arte. The first thing that occurs to me is his “cante por seguiriyas” [a flamenco style], which I adored. He’s a benchmark in the flamenco of yesterday, today and tomorrow, because he knew how to stay within the most orthodox tradition yet put a twist on it in records like “Misa flamenca” and “Omega”. His death is an incalculable loss for the art world. I used say that he was the “walking bible of flamenco song”.

El gran teatre del Liceu, Barcelona El Liceu tiene su origen en la Sociedad Dramática de Aficionados, creado en 1837 en el convento de Montsió por Manuel Gibert, miembro de la Milicia Nacional. Sin embargo, la necesidad de crear un conservatorio de música en una Barcelona en plena expansión económica y demográfica propició en poco más de un año su conversión en Liceo Filarmónico Dramático de SM la Reina Isabel II, añadiendo al cultivo del teatro el del canto y la música a la italiana. El éxito fue rotundo, y gracias a la voluntad de un grupo de burgueses catalanes encabezado por Joaquim de Gispert i d’Angli, se construyó un nuevo y ambicioso teatro, digno de la importancia la ciudad. Se ocupó el solar del antiguo convento de los trinitarios de la Rambla, y por fin, el 4 de abril de 1847, quedaba inaugurado el Gran teatre del Liceu. En total, más de un siglo y medio de ópera. Su compositor fetiche: Wagner. The origins of the Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house lay in the Dramatic Society of Aficionados, founded in 1837 in the Montsió convent by Manuel Gibert, a member of the National Militia. However, the need to create a music conservatory in Barcelona, which was in the midst of its economic and demographic boom, meant that in a little over a year the Society became the Dramatic Philharmonic Lyceum of Her Majesty Queen Isabel II, adding song and Italian-style music to the cultivation of theatre. Its success was resounding, and thanks to the efforts of a group of Catalan bourgeoisie led by Joaquim de Gispert i d’Angli a new and ambitious theatre was built, worthy of the city’s prominence. It occupied the plot of land that used to house the convent of the Trinitarians on Las Rambles, and finally, on the 4th of April 1847 the Gran Teatre del Liceu was officially opened, bringing the city a century and a half of opera. Tal como la conocemos hoy, La Opéra de París es sucesora de la Acádemie royale de Musique, fundada en 1669 por Luis XIV. En sus inicios, más que cumplir una misión docente, la Opéra colmaba los deseos del ministro Colbert, quien pretendía homogeneizar la producción cultural del reino. Primeramente, la institución se alojó en el Palacio Real, aunque a lo largo de la historia ha tenido varias sedes. A día de hoy, ocupa dos edificios de esplendor incomparable: el Palacio Garnier, bautizado así en honor al arquitecto que lo diseñó, y la Opéra de la Bastilla. El primero, con su escalinata y los bustos decorativos de los mayores músicos de la historia, era y es todo un icono de representación social. El segundo, conocido como la ‘ópera del pueblo’, se inauguró el 14 de julio de 1989, haciendo coincidir la apertura con las celebraciones del bicentenario de la caída de La Bastilla. El compositor fetiche de esta gran entidad es: Rossini.
As we know it today, the Paris Opéra is the successor to the Acádemie Royale de Musique founded in 1669 by Louis XIV. At first, more than having an educational mission, the Opéra fulfilled the designs of Minister Colbert, who wanted to homogenise the cultural production in the kingdom. The institution was first housed in the Royal Palace, although over history it has had a variety of locations. Today it occupies two incomparably splendid buildings: Palais Garnier, thus christened in honour of the architect who designed it, and L'Opéra Bastille. The former, with its grand staircase and decorative busts of the greatest musicians in history, was and still remains an icon of social status. En 1728, el actor y productor John Rich encargó a John Gay componer The Beggar’s Opera (La ópera del vagabundo). El éxito de la obra proveyó el capital necesario para construir el primer Teatro Real, desde entonces, ubicado en el barrio de Covent Garden. En los inicios, la dramaturgia copaba la agenda del escenario, que prácticamente tenía la exclusividad para representar drama hablado en Londres gracias a la concesión otorgada por Carlos II de Inglaterra. Los primeros trabajos musicales de cierta talla no llegaron hasta 1735, cuando el compositor Handel empezó a contribuir regularmente con la entidad. De hecho, muchas de sus óperas y oratorias fueron escritas expresamente para el Teatro o estrenadas en el mismo. Después de los devastadores incendios de 1808 y 1856 y las dificultades económicas que pasó la institución durante el periodo de entreguerras, The Royal Opera House reabrió el 20 de febrero de 1946. El Teatro Real, Madrid
El Teatro Real se inauguró el 7 de mayo de 1850 por medio de una Real Orden que dictó Isabel II, quien quiso culminar el proyecto iniciado por Fernando VII. Tras las pérdidas que ocasionó la primera temporada, el Gobierno decidió trasladar la gestión del teatro a manos privadas. Gracias a esta iniciativa, en el último cuarto del siglo XIX llegaron los años dorados de la entidad. En ella se escucharon las voces más prestigiosas del panorama europeo, como Adelina Patti o Julián Gayarre, quienes compartieron escenario cantando Lucia di Lammermoor, en una de las noches más memorables que se recuerda en el Teatro Real. Sin embargo, a partir de 1908, el teatro sufrió un proceso de declive paulatino. La crisis económica, el mal estado del edificio y su posterior

reconversión en sala de conciertos, sumieron al organismo en una crisis de identidad. El empujón definitivo se dio en 1997 con la reforma liderada por José Manuel González Valcárcel, a quien se le encargó diseñar una gran sala operística. Sin duda, una de las más importantes de Europa. Su compositor fetiche: Verdi. Este año no se le ha hecho una fiesta de despedida al buen tiempo, sino que se le ha dado la bienvenida a las bajas temperaturas, porque la Terraza del Claris ¡abre los 365 días del año! Para ello, el espacio se ha climatizado y cubierto con la instalación de unos grandes ventanales que no le han restado ni un ápice de luz, distinción y personalidad. El horario de apertura es realmente amplio, desde las 09.00 de la mañana hasta la 01.00 de la madrugada. E independientemente de si decide desayunar, almorzar o cenar, la calidad está asegurada. Al mediodía, puede disfrutar del Menú Factory, que se renueva semanalmente y está basado en las últimas tendencias gastronómicas. Por la tarde, después de una intensa jornada laboral, el recién estrenado chill out de la terraza del Claris será un magnífico punto de encuentro. Una vez cae la noche, la carta se convierte en la mejor opción para degustar las vieiras con espinacas y jengibre, sugerencia expresa del chef Dani Padró. Se trata de un plato realmente exquisito, que presenta una base de espinacas salteadas con jengibre sobre la cual se colocan las vieiras, ‘marcadas’ previamente por ambos lados. La decoración, tan importante como el contenido, está hecha a base de hilos de guindilla y piel de limón confitada. Y a partir de las 23.00 (de jueves a sábado) llega el momento de la buena música: al más puro estilo americano, el directo cobra protagonismo gracias a los conciertos de jazz y bossa nova programados. Guide Lines Derby
Detrás de la fachada de un hotel se esconde siempre un largo proceso de construcción, que en el caso de Derby Hotels Collection, es realmente espectacular. Cada uno de sus establecimientos renace de entre las cenizas de un edificio histórico para convertirse en un espacio exclusivo, confortable y de gran belleza. Diseñar hoteles es un arte, y en esta sección, lo ponemos al descubierto. El Hotel Bagués es la culminación del proyecto de restauración más importante acometido por Derby Hotels Collection hasta la fecha. Está ubicado en el emblemático edificio ‘El Regulador’, construido en 1850 y diseñado por el arquitecto Joseph Fontseré i Doménech. Durante muchos años fue la sede de la joyería taller Bagués-Masriera, una de las precursoras en España del modernismo y estandarte mundial del Art Nouveau. Lluís Masriera, representante de la tercera generación de esta saga de joyeros, y Jordi Clos, presidente de Derby Hotels Collection, lo tenían claro: Barcelona debía tener el ‘hotel bijou’ que se merece. Una de las primeras líneas maestras trazadas para el plan de remodelación de ‘El Regulador’ es el interiorismo. En gran medida, la decoración del Hotel Bagués es una reinterpretación del estilo Art Nouveau en su tendencia inglesa y escocesa, denominada Liberty. Por ello, se ha tomado como referencia a Rennie Mackintosh,
quien proponía en su obra una simplicidad de trazo que convive simbióticamente con el Modernismo creado por Masriera. Los elementos más característicos del trabajo de este genio se hacen visibles sobretodo en las habitaciones. Los cabeceros, los muebles y las sillas son diseños del propio Mackintosh. Es más, los materiales empleados se inspiran en algunas de sus obras más emblemáticas, como la Hill House, la Glasgow School of Art o The Willow Tearooms. De este modo, cobran protagonismo las maderas nobles como el wengué, el palisandro o el ébano (traído desde Madagascar); piedras como la pizarra importada de la India o bloques de mármol procedentes de Brasil y que gracias a sus dibujos naturales conforman un juego de formas muy sugerente para los suelos. Todo ello, junto al detalle de la icónica flor de Mackintosh que se proyecta a través de un foco de luz en la puerta de entrada de las habitaciones, hace que los estándares de calidad del hotel se eleven hasta cotas casi inalcanzables. Otro de los espacios distintivos del hotel es la sala museo, que ocupa el primer piso. En ella se encuentra la colección más completa del mundo de Bagués Masriera, especialmente piezas de la etapa del modernismo y el déco.

A lengthy construction process is concealed behind the facade of a hotel, which in the case of Derby Hotels Collection is truly spectacular. Each of its hotels rises up from the ashes of an historical building to become an exclusive, comfortable and extremely beautiful hotel. Designing hotels is an art, and in this section we are going to share that art with our readers. The Hotel Bagués is the culmination of the most important restoration project ever undertaken by Derby Hotels Collection to date. It is housed in the emblematic ‘El Regulador’ building constructed in 1850 and designed by architect Joseph Fontseré i Doménech. For years, it was the headquarters of the Bagués-Masriera jewellery workshop, one of the precursors to Spain’s ‘Modernismo’ and a worldwide standard-bearer of Art Nouveau. Lluís Masriera, a representative of the third generation in this line of jewellers, and Jordi Clos, Chairman of Derby Hotels Collection, shared a clear vision: Barcelona had to have the ‘bijou hotel’ it deserved. One of the first guidelines sketched for the remodelling plan of ‘El Regulador’ was the interior design. Broadly speaking, the decor of the Hotel Bagués is a reinterpretation of the Art Nouveau style in its English
and Scottish vein, called Liberty style. For this reason, the point of reference was Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Scottish architect whose oeuvre featured simple lines that fuse symbiotically with the ‘Modernismo’ created by Masriera. The most characteristic features of this genius are mainly visible in the rooms. The headboards, furniture and chairs were designed by Mackintosh himself. What is more, the materials used were inspired by some of his most emblematic works, including Hill House, the Glasgow School or Art and the Willow Tearooms. In this way, fine woods like wenge, rosewood and ebony (imported from Madagascar) are coupled with stones such as slate imported from India and blocks of marble from Brazil, whose natural patterns make a suggestive play of shapes on the floors. All of this is combined with the detail of Mackintosh’s iconic flower projec<ted via a spotlight at the door leading into the rooms, meaning that this hotel’s standards of quality soar to unforeseen heights. Another hallmark of the hotel is its museum hall, which occupies the first floor. It features the most comprehensive collection of Bagués Masriera in the world, particularly pieces from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco stage.

El Muse 74 es el mayor yate construido hasta la fecha por el astillero español Rodman. Su original estilo, ingeniado por Fulvio De Simoni, se plasma en una fusión de belleza y personalidad que da como resultado un producto magnífico. En primer lugar, las marcadas líneas de la superestructura del flybridge dotan al diseño de esta embarcación de singular y deportiva estampa, en la que están perfectamente integradas las tres ventanas laterales y las grandes ventanas de la carena, que forman dos medias lunas. En segundo lugar, debemos destacar los interiores: son realmente modernos y disponen de mucha luz, elemento importantísimo para la creación de una atmósfera confortable. Más concretamente, La habitabilidad está constituida por un amplio camarote central para el armador (vestidor incluido), un camarote VIP de proa con baño y dos estancias para invitados con sus respectivos sanitarios. En el nivel superior hay tres espacios independientes: salón, comedor y cocina, además del puesto de gobierno interior y una zona de acompañamiento. El gran salón está formado por un amplio sofá con su mesa de centro y un mueble auxiliar equipado con un sofisticado equipo audiovisual. Además, incorpora un comedor con capacidad para 8-10 personas y una cocina totalmente acondicionada: tiene lavavajillas, horno eléctrico, microondas y frigorífico congelador. Por supuesto, todo el interior del Rodman Muse 74 es personalizable. De este modo, el armador podrá elegir los materiales empleados atendiendo a su calidad, textura o color.
The Muse 74 is the best yacht built to date by the Spanish shipbuilder Rodman. Its original style, devised by Fulvio De Simoni, is captured in a merger of beauty and personality which result in a magnificent product. First of all, the pronounced lines of the superstructure of the flybridge endow the design of this vessel with a singular, sporty feel, in which the three side windows and large windows of the keel are perfectly integrated, forming half-moons. Secondly, worth highlighting are the interiors: they are truly modern and filled with light, an extremely important factor in creating a comfortable atmosphere. More specifically, the quarters consist of a large central cabin for the owner (including a dressing room), a VIP cabin in the prow with a bathroom, and two rooms for guests with their respective bathrooms. There are three independent areas on the upper level: living area, the dining room and the kitchen, in addition to the interior helm and a company zone. The large living area includes a spacious sofa and coffee table, along with an auxiliary cabinet housing sophisticated audiovisual equipment. Plus, the dining room can fit up to 8-10 people, and the kitchen is fully equipped: dishwasher, electric oven, microwave and refrigerator-freezer. Of course, the entire interior of the Rodman Muse 74 can be personalised. In this way, the owner can choose which materials are to be used according to their quality, texture or colour.

Flash Flash Flash Flash es hijo de la irreverencia y la inconformidad de la gauche divine (izquierda divina), un movimiento cultural que nació en Barcelona a finales de los 60’s. Por aquel entonces se convirtió en uno de los locales más modernos de la ciudad condal, por su aparente no-lujo y por la drástica combinación entre el blanco y el negro. El primer color era para las paredes, mientras que el segundo daba vida a 100 reporteras hechas de pintura. En cuanto a la cocina, sus dos especialidades son: la tortilla y la hamburguesa. Andy Warhol cambió la concepción del arte en la década de los 60, cuando se atrevió a romper el misticismo de la obra única para empuñar la bandera de la producción en serie. Lo dijo él mismo: “¿Por qué la gente piensa que los artistas son especiales? Es solo otro trabajo”. Pero aunque no lo quisiera, era un tipo especial. Su trabajo empezó a popularizarse gracias a los cuadros protagonizados por las latas de sopa Campbell y las botellas de Coca-Cola. Posteriormente, cuando ya se había instalado en su estudio ‘The Factoy’, llegaron los famosos retratos de Kennedy y Marylin. Tomaba las fotos con su Polaroid y luego las modificaba con pintura. Tan sencillo, tan genial. Por eso algunas de las litografías de este gurú del pop Art cuelgan de las paredes del Hotel Claris y el Hotel Villa Real: porque en realidad, son irrepetibles. Andy Warhol changed the concept of art in the 1960s when he dared to break with the mystery of the unique work to instead wave the banner of mass production. He himself said, “Why do people think that artists are special? It’s just ano-ther job.” But even if he did not want to be, he was a special person. His work began to take off thanks to his paintings featuring Campbell’s soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles. Later, when he was already at The Factory, came the famous portraits of Kennedy and Marilyn. He took the photos with his Polaroid and then painted on them. So simple, yet so brilliant. For this reason, some of the lithographs of this guru of Pop Art are hanging on the walls of the Hotel Claris and the Hotel Villa Real: because actually they are one-of-a-kind.

Bajo la firma ‘>K’ se esconde un grupo de empresarios que ha hecho lo que nadie había conseguido hacer hasta el momento: obtener un aceite de oliva virgen extra de los Olivos Milenarios de Maestrazgo (Castellón). Sí, han leído bien. Hablamos de árboles que llevan plantados más de 1.000 años, auténticos monumentos naturales que, en su mayoría, fueron arrancados para ser vendidos como joyas ornamentales. Sin embargo, la tenaz defensa de los agricultores de la zona por salvar estos ejemplares dio sus frutos. La Comunidad Valenciana dictó una normativa pionera en el país que prohibía la comercialización de los mismos. Y así, acabando con un expolio insensible al milagro de la vida, se ha conseguido mantener en pie unos olivos de la exclusiva variedad autóctona Farga, que estaba a punto de ser extinguida. Ahora, todos los ejemplares están
censados, cuidados y cosechados con un esmero casi virtuoso. Por poner un ejemplo: uno de los procesos más importantes, la recogida del fruto, se hace mediante el ordeñado, una técnica artesanal que consiste en deslizar la mano alrededor del ramo para que este vaya soltando las aceitunas. De ellas, se extrae un maravilloso jugo resistente a la oxidación, de color amarillo dorado con reflejos verdes. Es dulce y extraordinariamente fino; posee un sabor a piel de manzana verde y almendra cruda. Todas ellas, características que le otorgan una gran variedad de usos gastronómicos muy amplia. ‘>K’ (creado por la cooperativa Clot d’En Simó y los empresarios Xavier Balada y Salva Vives) ha recibido el galardón de ‘Baluarte’ de ‘Slow Food International’ por su gran contribución ecológica y a la sostenibilidad del paisaje.
The trademark ‘>K’ conceals a group of businesspeople who have done what no one has managed to do until now: get extra virgin olive oil from the Olivos Milenarios de Maestrazgo (Castellón). That’s right: you read it correctly. We are talking about trees that were planted over 1,000 years ago, true natural monuments, most of which were uprooted to be sold as ornamental garden pieces. Still, the region’s farmers’ tenacious zeal to save these specimens is now showing results. The region of Valencia has enacted a pioneering law that bans the commercialisation of these trees. And, thus putting an end to the insensitive pillaging of the miracle of life, it has managed to keep olive trees of the exclusive local Farga variety standing, a variety that was on the verge of extinction. Now all the specimens are counted, cared for and harvested with almost virtu-
oso care. Just to cite an example: one of the most important processes, the fruit gathering, is done through ‘ordeñado’ (the same word as ‘milking’ a cow), a painstaking process which consists of sliding the hand around the branch to get it to release the olives. From this a wonderful, oxidationresistant liquid is yielded, golden yellow in colour with green hints. It is sweet and extraordinarily refined, with flavours that are reminiscent of apple peel and raw almonds. All of these characteristics mean that the oil can be used in cooking in a wide variety of ways. ‘>K’ (created by the Clot d’En Simó cooperative and businessmen Xavier Balada and Salva Vives) has won the ‘Baluarte’ award from ‘Slow Food International’ for its invaluable contribution to ecology and the sustainability of the landscape.

Excavaciones arqueológicas en Egipto del Museu Egipci de Barcelona

Desde el año 2006 el Museu Egipci de Barcelona, junto a la Universidad de Tübingen, realiza excavaciones arqueológicas en el yacimiento de Sharuna (Egipto Medio). Durante las cinco primeras campañas los trabajos se han concentrado en el sector del cementerio principal, donde se han descubierto tumbas de diferentes periodos de la época faraónica y restos de los materiales que formaron parte de sus equipamientos funerarios (sarcófagos, estatuillas, amuletos, recipientes cerámicos y de piedra, mesas de ofrendas o maquetas funerarias). El descubrimiento más singular hasta el momento ha sido el de una cámara subterránea que formó parte de una necrópolis de animales; en su interior fueron halladas más de quinientas momias de aves (halcones e ibis), la mayor parte en un excepcional estado de conservación. Fechado en época Ptolemaica (302-30 a.C.), este conjunto es una muestra más de la importancia que alcanzó el culto a los animales sagrados durante los últimos momentos del Egipto faraónico. Since 2006, the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona, in conjunction with Tübingen University, has been conducting archaeological excavations at the Sharuna site in Middle Egypt. During the first five campaigns, the focus was on the area of the main cemetery, where tombs from different periods during the age of the pharaohs and the remains of materials that were part of their funeral goods were found (including sarcophagi, statuettes, amulets, ceramic and stone containers, offering tables and funeral models). The most unique discovery to date has been an underground chamber that was part of an animal necropolis. Inside it, more than 500 bird mummies were found (falcons and ibises), most of them exceptionally well conserved. Dating from the Ptolemaic Period (302-30 BC), they are yet further proof of the importance of the worship of sacred animals during the waning years of the pharaohs’ rule in ancient Egypt.

Costa azul, Mediterráneo perfumado Si Guy de Maupassant y Paul Signac, a finales del siglo XIX, no hubieran sido el epicentro de los encuentros artísticos de la época, quizás no estaríamos hablando de ella. Tampoco lo hubiéramos hecho si Brigitte Bardot no hubiera cortado la respiración a más de uno con las sensuales escenas que rodó en los años 50 para el largometraje ‘Y Dios creó la mujer’. En definitiva: hubiera sido muy difícil que hoy escribiéramos este texto sobre la Costa Azul sin la ayuda de estos celebérrimos personajes, embajadores impagables de este bellísimo litoral que se extiende a lo largo de 110 km, de Saint Tropez a Mónaco. Desde la joya hasta la corona Para visitar todas las puntas de la corona de la Riviera Francesa, quizás lo más práctico es instalarse en su gran joya: Niza. Desde ella, la llegada a las otras ciudades de interés es cuestión de tiempo, ganas, y evidentemente, de combustible. Lo necesitará tanto si decide desplazarse en coche o en barco para realizar la primera parada, en Saint-Tropez. Es la población más occidental de la Costa Azul, la puerta de entrada a un Mar que conjuga el Mediterráneo más perfumado con el concepto ‘Francia’, algo que no deja de sorprender a los que ven el país galo a través de los ojos de su capital: en París, no hay playa. Uno de los enclaves estratégicos de Saint Tropez es el puerto deportivo, donde los botes llamados ‘pointus’, que pertenecen a los pescadores locales, conviven con el imponente conjunto formado por veleros, yates de recreo y offshores. Por supuesto, no solamente el verano es amo y señor de la Riviera Francesa. Debido a la benignidad de su clima, uno también puede dedicar su tiempo al centro histórico de Saint-Tropez con un paseo otoñal, al tiempo que cumple con el motivo artístico de visita obligada: el museo de la Annonciade. Se trata de una antigua capilla del siglo XVI que alberga las obras de creadores pertenecientes a las corrientes pictóricas que abarcan desde finales del XIX hasta
mediados del XX: Georges Seurat, Georges Braque y Henri Matisse, entre otros. Cannes y Niza Después de Saint Tropez no debe perderse Cannes. La zona más conocida de la ciudad es la delimitada por la cuadra que forman la Rue d’Antibes al oeste, la Rue Pasteur al norte, el Mercado de las Flores al sur y el Boulevard de la Croisette al este. Posiblemente, es una de las superficies más exclusivas y lujosas del mundo: hay boutiques de prestigio internacional, restaurantes exquisitos y hoteles de vértigo. Y todo ello, se llena aún más de glamour cuando en mayo se pone a los pies de algunas afortunadas estrellas cinematográficas la alfombra roja del Festival de Cine, un certamen que aúna espectáculo, prestigio y calidad. Dicen que en Niza nació el turismo, debido al gran número de aristócratas ingleses y rusos que se desplazaban a la zona para disfrutar de la suavidad de las temperaturas. Pero debemos ser justos: el turismo moderno lo creó Thomas Cook en 1841, cuando pasó de organizar excursiones de forma unilateral a cobrar un porcentaje de los beneficios que la compañía de ferrocarriles obtenía al proveer a los viajantes el desplazamiento entre Leicester y Loughborough. Si Cook hubiera conocido Niza y los avances en las comunicaciones se lo hubieran permitido, esta joya del Mediterráneo habría sido la piedra angular de su negocio. Es una ciudad dinámica, eléctrica y exquisita. A primera vista, lo que más destaca es la Promenade de Anglais, la avenida que atraviesa toda la ciudad. Posiblemente es su cara más opulente, puesto que en ella predomina la actividad diletante de los que aman el sol, el shopping, las estancias de lujo y la noche. Pero hay mucho más que ver en la joya de la Costa Azul, desde sus románticas y acogedoras calles en la Villa Vieille, hasta los grandes Museos (Matisse y Chagall entre otros), sin olvidarnos de la estatua submarina de la Virgen María, la Plaza Massena, el Palacio Lascaris y la Catedral Ortodoxa Russe St-Nicolas.

In the late 19th century, if Guy de Maupassant and Paul Signac had not been the epicentre of artistic encounters of the time, perhaps we would not be talking about it. Nor would we if Brigitte Bardot had not taken the breath away from more than one man with the sensual scenes she filmed in the 1950s for the featurelength film, “And God Created Woman”. In short, today it would have been very difficult to write this text on the Côte d’Azur without the help of these celebrities, invaluable ambassadors of this lovely coastline that stretches 110 from Saint-Tropez to Monaco. From the jewel to the crown To visit the jewels in the crown of the French Riviera, perhaps the most practical tack would be to start at its greatest gem: Nice. From there, reaching other cities of interest is just a matter of time, will and, obviously, fuel. You will need the later regardless of whether you decide to travel by car or boat to reach your first stop, Saint-Tropez. This is the westernmost town on the Côte d’Azur, the gateway to a sea that combines the most perfumed Mediterranean with the concept of “France”, something that never ceases to amaze those who see the country through the eyes of its capital: in Paris there is no beach. One of the strategic points in Saint-Tropez is its
marina, where boats called ‘pointus” belonging to the local fisherman moor alongside an impressive fleet of sailboats, recreational yachts and offshores. Of course, Saint-Tropez is the lord of the French Riviera, and not only in the summertime. Due to the mild climate, you can also devote your time to the historic centre of Saint-Tropez on an autumn stroll as you visit the artistic must-see: the Annonciade Museum. This is an ancient 16th century chapel that houses the works by prominent creators from painting trends that encompass the late 19th to the mid-20th century, including Georges Seurat, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse, among others. Cannes and Nice After Saint-Tropez you cannot miss Cannes. The most famous zone in the city is bounded by the square area made up of Rue d’Antibes to the west, Rue Pasteur to the north, the flower market to the south and Boulevard de la Croisette to the east. This is probably one of the most exclusive, luxurious places in the world: there are prestigious international boutiques, outstanding restaurants and amazing hotels. And it all fills up with even more glamour when some of the fortunate film stars walk the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, an event that merges showmanship, prestige and quality.
They say that tourism got its start in Nice due to the large number of English and Russian aristocrats who travelled there to enjoy its mild temperatures. But we should be fair: Thomas Cook created modern tourism in 1841, when he shifted from organising unilateral excursions to charging a percentage of the profits that the railway company earned from providing travellers passage between Leicester and Loughborough. If Cook had known about Nice and if advances in transportation had allowed it, this jewel of the Mediterranean would have been the cornerstone of his business. It is a dynamic, electric, exquisite city. At first glance, what stands out the most is Promenade de Anglais, the avenue that crosses the entire city. It is possibly the city’s most opulent side, since it is the backdrop to the dilettante’s favourites: sun worshipping, shopping, luxury hotels and nightlife. However, there is much more to see in this gem of the Côte d’Azur, from its romantic, charming streets in Villa Vieille to the large museums (Matisse and Chagall, among others), not to mention the underwater statue of the Virgin Mary, Massena square, Lascaris Palace and the Russian Orthodox cathedral of St-Nicolas.
