“¿De qué manera puedo explicarles cómo me gustaría darles la bienvenida a nuestros hoteles en Madrid, Barcelona, Londres y París? En ellos, cientos de obras de la colección personal de arte de mi familia abundan, incluyendo obras mayas, egipcias, romanas y budistas. Se lo resumiré: muy pocos hoteles en el mundo tienen una sala de museo privado donde el arte se puede disfrutar durante la cena o el almuerzo; un evento especial o una reunión.

“How can I explain to you how I would like to welcome you at our hotels in Madrid, Barcelona, London and Paris? They are filled with hundreds of works of art from my family’s personal art collection, including Maya, Egyptian, Roman and Buddhist pieces. To sum up: very few hotels in the world have a private museum room where art can be enjoyed while having dinner or breakfast, celebrating a special event or meeting.

Para desplazarse desde el Aeropuerto Barcelona-El Prat hasta el centro de Barcelona tiene varias opciones. There are several ways to get from the Barcelona-El Prat Airport to the centre of Barcelona.

Bus El más rápido es el AEROBUS. Tiene dos líneas: la A1, que sale desde la Terminal 1; y la A2, que parte de la Terminal 2. Precio billete: 5,90 €. Hay otros autobuses de línea como el 46 o el N17. Una joya modernista para el mundo

Esta es la historia de un hotel con tanta vocaciĂłn artĂstica que tiene un museo y expone sus piezas en salas de otra tierra. This is the story of a hotel so committed to art that it has a small museum and exhibits its pieces at galleries in foreign lands.

HOTEL BAGUÉS Fabulaba con ser un establecimiento de 5 estrellas que fuera la viva imagen de la corriente escocesa del Art Nouveau, abanderada por el artista Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Se instaló en un palacio de 1850 que albergó parte de los talleres de la firma joyera Bagués-Masriera, la más grande exponente de la orfebrería modernista. Quería ser una joya dentro de otra. Lo consiguió. Fue Ícaro, pero inmune al Sol. Voló y le dio la vuelta al cielo, convirtiéndose en Museo. Expuso. Y tuvo éxito. Piezas únicas que tras pisar el Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) arribaron a puertos remotos. Joyas Masriera en el Metropolitan Museum of Art de Nueva York. Joyas modernistas en el Museo Van Gogh de Ámsterdam. Joyas mágicas en el Cleveland Museum of Art. Joyas únicas en el Museo de Artes Decorativas de Madrid. Así es la historia de un hotel con tanta vocación artística que tiene un museo y expone sus piezas en salas de otra tierra.

It fantasised about being a 5-star establishment that was the perfect image of the Scottish Art Nouveau movement led by artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It settled in an 1850s palace that housed some of the workshops of the jewellery manufacturer BaguésMasriera, the greatest example of Modernist goldwork. It wanted to be a jewel within a jewel. And it managed to do so. It was Icarus, but immune to the sun. It flew and reached the sky, thus becoming a Museum. It exhibited. And was successful. Unique pieces that, after spending time in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), reached faraway lands. Masriera jewellery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Modernist jewellery at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Magical jewellery at the Cleveland Museum of Art. One-of-a-kind jewellery at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid. This is the story of a hotel so committed to art that it eventually became a museum and exhibited its pieces at galleries in foreign lands.

Historia viva de la ciudad He ahí la gran virtud de Derby Hotels Collection: guardar en el tarro todas las esencias de una ciudad que se transforma y contempla nuevas oportunidades para la gestión de su espacio público. This is the great virtue of Derby Hotels Collection: storing in a jar the complete essence of a city that is transforming and embraces new opportunities to manage its public space.

El Arai, emplazado en el barrio Gótico, se alberga en un edificio que data de 1702. En 1779 se convirtió en el Palacio de los cuatro ríos en honor a los frescos en sus fachadas de la calle Avinyó, cuyo diseño respondía al genio de Jaume Fábregas, uno de los grandes maestros del esgrafiado en Catalunya. Posteriormente, el inmueble albergó también la Sede del Fomento de las Artes Decorativas, convirtiéndose más adelante en la residencia de familias de la nobleza y, finalmente, en viviendas particulares. Finalmente, en 2013, la compañía inauguraba el hotel, conservando algunos de sus elementos originales: la fachada y su grabado en honor al mundo de las artes, la escalera principal de mármol, el artesonado del techo de la recepción y el arco de forja obra firmado por Angel Rull, construido en 1900.

The Arai, located in the Gothic quarter, is housed in a building dating back to 1702. In 1779, It became the Palace of the Four Rivers in honour of the frescoes on its façades on Carrer Avinyó, which were designed by the genius Jaume Fábregas, one of the great masters of sgraffito in Catalonia. Later on, the building served as the headquarters of Fostering Arts and Design (FAD), and was subsequently turned into a residence for noble families and finally into private homes. The company finally inaugurated the hotel in 2013, preserving some of the original features: the façade and its engraving paying tribute to the world of arts, the main marble staircase, the coﬀered ceiling in the lobby, and the wrought iron arch designed by Angel Rull which was built in 1900. 11

Posteriormente, bajando por la calle Aribau, encontrarás el Dry Martini, el Solange Cocktail and Luxury Spirits y el Ideal Cocktail Bar. ¡Menudo trío! El primero sigue formando parte la lista de los 50 mejores bares del planeta; el segundo, situado en el mítico Harry’s, es un local de carácter íntimo y exclusivo. Y el tercero, inaugurado en 1931, es el típico local en el que podrías toparte con Humphrey Bogart: ¡un clásico! Para cerrar la escapada, puede hacer un par de paradas más. Gire por la calle Mallorca y tómese una cerveza en The Philarmonic, un elegante pub inglés que ofrece buena música en directo. Por último, despídase de la Luna en la Terraza Bar 8 del Hotel Granados.

Once your appetite is satiated, it’s time to quench the thirst of your nocturnal spirit. From Bardot, intimate and informal, walk down to París and go to Slow Barcelona, a lovely place that shakes things up with its innovate cocktail menu. To wind down the escapade, you can make a couple more stops. Turn on Mallorca and have a beer at The Philharmonic , an elegant English pub with good live music. Finally, bid farewell to the moon at Terraza Bar 8 in Hotel Granados.

Down there you’ll find colours, triangles, diamonds and other Modernist decorations that were in vogue in El Eixample in the early 20th century.

BALMES & BALMES RESIDENCE Justamente en este barrio es donde se encuentran el Hotel Balmes y el Balmes Residence. Ambos conservan numerosos elementos estructurales de estilo que se han preservado y que han sido restaurados y enriquecidos a conciencia por la compañía. Sin duda, destacan especialmente los suelos hidráulicos conservados en los seis apartamentos del Balmes Residence. Delimitados por una cenefa, están hechos con la técnica del ‘trencadís’, un tipo de mosaico cerámico al cual se le aplican colores y formas -básicamente, naturales y geométricasmediante una prensa hidráulica. Con el tiempo, este tipo de pavimento se ha convertido en un símbolo de la burguesía catalana, ya que las empresas que fabricaban las baldosas contrataban a diseñadores consagrados en aquella época como Alexandre de Riquer o Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

And it is precisely in this neighbourhood where Hotel Balmes and the Balmes Residence are located. Both establishments still have many of these kinds of structural elements, which have been carefully restored and enhanced by the company. Particularly stunning are the hydraulic tile floors in the six apartments of the Balmes Residence. Framed by a decorative band, they were made using the “trencadís” technique, which is a type of ceramic mosaic created using primarily natural and geometric shapes in diﬀerent colours pressed together using a hydraulic press. Over time, this kind of flooring has become a symbol of the Catalan bourgeoisie, as the companies manufacturing the tiles hired well-known designers of the time like Alexandre de Riquer and Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

Todos tienen acceso a una gama de productos y servicios de carácter general, pero luego hay que personalizarlos. Además, si queremos que la empresa sea más sostenible a largo plazo, tenemos que focalizarnos más en clientes de entre 25 y 45 años. Queremos que las cosas sean más de tú y menos de usted. Nos ayudamos de las redes sociales y una base de datos CRM para saber si un cliente ha hecho una reserva por primera vez o si repite. Si es así, ¿qué consumió en el restaurante? ¿Se tomó luego una copa? ¿Pidió algún servicio extraordinario antes de llegar? La palabra ‘Collection’, que forma parte de nuestro nombre, cobra sentido aquí, es real. Uno puede dormir en una habitación con una pieza de arte precolombino al lado. La empresa tiene planes de expansión. Pensamos en Europa, veremos si es Roma, Ámsterdam… aunque el sueño de Joaquim Clos es ir a Nueva York. Cuando el sr. Clos piensa en abrir un hotel no se fija en los edificios contemporáneos. Él quiere situarse en un edificio singular para que la gente que viene de fuera experimente una parte de la historia de la ciudad. Por ejemplo: el Bagués se alberga en el taller de la firma joyera modernista Masriera.

Nowadays, we are business developers. We must understand the consumer and be on top of new trends (including technological ones) to detect what is missing and help the company sell more. When you think of a family business, you think of something small. But Derby Hotels Collection, headed by the Clos family, has 14 hotels spread across Barcelona, Madrid, London and Paris. I’ve never worked for my dad, but I think this is the next closest thing. You know, this duality between hard work and closeness. The company is guest oriented, and now it must be customer oriented. All of them have access to a range of general products and services, but then they must be personalised. Moreover, if we want the company to be more sustainable in the long run, we have to start attracting customers between 25 and 45 years old. We want things to be more casual and less formal.

El Banke es un hotel grande, tiene más de 90 habitaciones. Pero es un cinco estrellas atípico, porque aunque hay una plasmación de la cultura francesa a nivel de materiales y diseño, en él se respira una cierta cultura trasgresora. La revista Derby Hotels Collection nos sirve mucho para explicarle al cliente quiénes somos. Hemos variado su formato, hemos hecho menos texto y hemos potenciado su faceta visual. It reminds me of my childhood; my grandfather always drank it this way. I’m a pretty normal guy. My only eccentricity is being director of Marketing.

We use social media and a CRM database to know if customers have made a reservation for the first time or if it’s a repeat visit. If that’s the case, what did they have at the restaurant? Did they have a drink later? Did they request some extraordinary service before arriving?

The word Collection, which is part of our name, makes sense here; it’s real. You can sleep in a guestroom with a piece of pre-Columbian art next to you. The company is planning to expand. We’re focusing on Europe. We’ll see if it’s Rome, Amsterdam… although Joaquim Clos’ dream is to go to New York. When Mr. Clos thinks about opening a hotel, he doesn’t focus on modern buildings. He wants to be located in a distinctive building, so that people coming from other places are able to experience part of the city’s history. For example: the Bagués is located in the workshop of the modernist jewellery maker Masriera. The Banke is a large hotel; it has over 90 guestrooms. But it is an atypical 5-star hotel, because although French culture is captured in the material and design, the hotel exudes a sort of transgressive culture as a whole. The Derby Hotels Collection magazine helps us a lot to explain to customers who we are. We’ve changed the format. Now there is less text and we’ve enhanced the visual aspect. 29

El 8 de mayo de 1945, Winston Churchill anunciaba la rendición incondicional de Alemania y daba por concluida la II Guerra Mundial. Ese día, conocido como VE Day, pasará a la historia por el triunfo de los aliados y por la curiosa petición que la princesa Elizabeth y su hermana Margareth le hicieron a su padre, el Rey Jorge VI, antes de su esperado discurso. Las dos jóvenes querían mezclarse entre la multitud que celebraba la efeméride, agolpada frente a las puertas del Buckingham Palace. El monarca les dio permiso para asistir a una fiesta en el Hotel Ritz, pero ellas tenían ganas de marcha.

On 8 May 1945, Winston Churchill announced the unconditional surrender of Germany and hence the end to World War II. This day, known as VE Day, will go down in history for the triumph of the allies and for the odd request that Princess Elizabeth and her sister Margaret made to their father, King George VI, before his anticipated speech. The two young girls wanted to mingle with the crowd celebrating the event gathered together outside the gates of Buckingham Palace. The king gave them permission to attend a party at the Ritz Hotel, but they wanted to go out on the town.

Desaparecer del mapa en las Islas Cook Entre 1768 y 1779, el explorador británico James Cook realizó tres expediciones para tratar de demostrar la existencia del supuesto continente del sur, conocido entonces como Terra Australis Incognita.
