In our desire to continue with this philosophy and expand our range of culinary offerings, “Palosanto” just opened its doors, a restaurant right in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter located in the Hotel Arai, a joint initiative of Derby Hotels Collection and Grupo San Telmo. We also wanted to spotlight Banke Hotel, that just have received his fifth star and falls squarely in the Group of the best hotels in Paris. Meanwhile, the Caesar Hotel celebrates its tenth anniversary and has earned the prestigious Silver Award given by the English Tourism Bureau in recognition of quality and service. Congratulations! In recent years, BARCELONA has become a veritable engine of RECITALS and events in which POETRY manages to summon dozens of people WANTING to listen and BE HEARD. El Festival Internacional de Poesía de Barcelona, que se celebra cada mes de mayo, coexiste con propuestas de pequeño formato que durante todo el año animan el panorama literario de la ciudad. Hablamos de bares, pequeños cafés-teatro, librerías o centros culturales que incluyen en su programación este tipo de eventos. Probablemente, uno de los más conocidos sea Heliogàbal, ubicado en el barrio de Gràcia. Es un espacio polifacético. Por aquí pasan muchos grupos musicales de la escena independiente catalana, pero también magos, monologuistas y poetas. Por supuesto, hay vida más allá de este referente. Horiginal, Cincómonos, Lletraferit Bar, Tinta Roja, Electric Bar…son solo algunos de los nombres que mantienen vivo el verso en la ciudad condal.

The art of speaking, so downgraded today by the fear of being silent, has found its place in venues that are like the flip side of massive events. The Barcelona International Poetry Festival, which is held every May, coexists alongside small events that enliven the city’s literary scene. It includes bars, small theatre-cafes, bookshops and cultural centres whose programming includes this kind of event. One of the most famous is probably Heliogàbal, located in the neighbourhood of Gràcia. It is a multipurpose space which welcomes many bands from the independent music scene in Catalonia, as well as magicians, monolinguists and poets. Of course there is life beyond Heliogàbal. Horiginal, Cincómonos, Lletraferit Bar, Tinta Roja, Electric Bar… they are just some of the names that keep verse alive in Barcelona.

HOTEL ARAI

Derby Hotels Collection se caracteriza por albergar sus hoteles en edificios con un alto valor arquitectónico y patrimonial. En este caso, Arai se encuentra en la popular ‘casa dels quatre rius’ (casa de los cuatro ríos), que hasta 1935 fue la sede de l’Escola Massana i Foment de les Arts Decoratives. Se ha recuperado el esplandor de su fachada, con los esgrafiados originales. Derby Hotels Collection is characterised by housing its hotels in buildings with extraordinary architectural and heritage value. The Arai is located in the popular ‘Casa dels quatre rius’ (house of the four rivers), which was the headquarters of the Escola Massana i Foment de les Arts Decoratives, a famous arts and crafts school, until 1935. The company has restored the splendour of its façade with its original graffiti.

Jordi Clos, presidente de Derby Hotels Collection, contaba en petit comité que al contemplar por primera vez la fachada del Suites Avenue junto a su artífice, le embargó la emoción. Había cumplido un sueño: colaborar con el prestigioso arquitecto Toyo Ito. El diseñador japonés creó una preciosa estructura con paneles de acero inoxidable de ocho milímetros de espesor cortados de forma irregular, imitando la ondulación de las olas del mar. Es un sentido homenaje a Gaudí y a día de hoy ya es un icono arquitectónico de Barcelona. Jordi Clos, the president of Derby Hotels Collection, was recounting to a small group that when he saw the façade of the Suites Avenue and its designer for the first time, he was overcome with emotion. His dream had come true: to work with the prestigious architect Toyo Ito. This Japanese designer created a precious structure with inox steal panels just eight millimetres thick cut in an irregular pattern, imitating the undulations of the waves in the sea. In one sense it is a tribute to Gaudí, and right now it is an architectural icon of Barcelona.

BALMES RESIDENCE El Balmes Residence es un fiel representante del modernismo de principios del siglo XX. Las molduras decoradas de los techos, los frescos y los mosaicos en forma de ‘trencadís’ de los suelos evocan la época en la que se hablaba el lenguaje expresivo de creadores como Joaquim Sunyer o Josep Puig i Cadafalch. The Hotel Balmes Residence is a faithful representative of early 20th century Art Nouveau. The decorative mouldings of the ceilings, the frescos and the ‘trencadís’ mosaics on the floors evoke this period which spoke in the expressive languages of creators like Joaquim Sunyer and Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

You reached BARCELONA early enough to go SHOPPING a bit before LUNCH, but perhaps a little too late to begin to discover the city. The flight time, the NERVOUSNESS as you prepared for the trip… all of that comes to bear and you FALL DOWN exhausted as soon as you reach your APARTMENT.

Habéis dormido mucho, confortablemente, ya que la estancia es muy amplia y tiene capacidad para vosotros y vuestros dos hijos. Es tarde, pero aquí el horario de desayuno empieza y acaba cuando decidís vosotros. Mientras cogéis energía, miráis vuestra situación en un mapa: ¡Es cierto! Los apartamentos Milà, donde os alojáis, se encuentran en el Barrio de Gràcia, uno de los más bonitos de Barcelona según el apartado de ‘imprescindibles’ de vuestra guía. Pasáis el día paseando por el centro de la ciudad y desde allí llegáis hasta la playa. El ambiente es inmejorable y, dejando a un lado las atracciones turísticas de rigor, hoy las calles vibran con los prolegómenos del BarçaMadrid que tendrá lugar al anochecer. La verdad es que hay pocas ciudades en el mundo que ofrezcan tan idílica postal. Degustáis una buena paella, en un restaurante que os han recomendado los amigos con los que os encontraréis para cenar. Después de una jornada de largas caminatas, llegáis al apartamento. Vuestros invitados estarán aquí en un par de horas. Han insistido en hacer de anfitriones, pero ya habéis estado en su piso en otras ocasiones y aquí disponéis de todo lo necesario para organizar una buena velada. Preparáis pan con tomate y embutido; os encantó la primera vez que lo probasteis. Ellos, que llegan con el pitido inicial del árbitro, traen el vino. El fútbol es tan solo una excusa. De hecho, el comentarista ha cantado el primer gol y de no ser por el ruido de claxon de la calle no os hubierais enterado. Charláis absortos; lo echabais de menos. La botella, descorchada hace un rato, se oxigena mientras piensas en servirte una copa y reparas en algo: no estás en casa, pero te sientes en ella.

As you fill yourselves with energy, you look at your location on the map. It’s true! The Milà Apartments, where you are staying, are located in the neighbourhood of Gràcia, one of the most beautiful in Barcelona according to the “must-see” section in your guidebook. You spend the day walking through the city centre and from there you reach the beach. The atmosphere couldn’t be better, and besides the de rigeur tourist attractions today the streets are alive with the preparations for the Barça-Madrid that evening. The fact is that there are few cities in the world that offer such an idyllic picture. You savour a delicious paella in a restaurant recommended by the friends you met for dinner. After a long day on your feet you reach the apartment. Your guests will be there a few hours. They insisted on being the hosts, but you’ve already stayed in this flat other times and know that it has everything you need to organise a great evening. You prepare rustic bread spread with tomato and sausages; you loved it the first time you tried it. They arrive bearing the wine right at the whistle starting the football match. But football is just an excuse. In fact, the commentator has already announced the first goal, as if you couldn’t have told by the sound of horns honking in the streets. You chat intensely – you’ve missed each other. The bottle, uncorked for a while now, breathes as you think about serving yourself a glass and snacking a bit. You’re not at home, but it sure feels like you are.

Àngel, su propietario, se encarga personalmente de limpiar y preparar todo el producto, desde los caracoles de mar hasta los cangrejos, pasando por las navajas, los percebes, la mojama o los pimientos rellenos de anchoas. Tourist guides don’t always list them first, in fact they rarely do, but they are must-sees if you want to sample the true tastes of the capital of Catalonia. En Poble Sec La Tieta Su pequeña barra de mármol presenta una enorme variedad de productos. Tienen un buen vermut casero, vinos de diferente denominación de origen y, como no, cerveza que tiran a la perfección. La comida nos reserva alguna que otra sorpresa, ya que la creatividad bien entendida es una de las señas de identidad del establecimiento. En Poble Sec La Tieta Its little marble bar has a vast variety of products. They have a great homemade vermouth, wines with different appellations of origin, and of course beer which they draw perfectly. The food holds a surprise or two, since wise creativity is one of this establishment’s hallmarks. Por supuesto, la revolución industrial, con la aparición de la máquina de vapor y la mejora de los sistemas de comunicación, posibilitó el avance. Pero, ¿debemos deducir entonces que nadie antes había viajado de forma premeditada y sin ánimo de lucro? Evidentemente, no. El viajero ha existido siempre, más allá de la evasión. En la Antigua Grecia, por ejemplo, había quien se desplazaba a Olimpia para presenciar las hazañas de los mejores atletas del momento. Otros, en cambio, hacían camino con la intención de descubrir nuevos horizontes y otras culturas. Es el caso del filósofo griego Heródoto, (495-425 a.C.), considerado como el primer turista de la historia. No paró de viajar, pasando por el Mar Egeo, las provincias de la actual Turquía, por Atenas, Tracia, Macedonia, Sicilia, Egipto, Mesopotamia, Persia, etc. Recorrió un sinfín de paisajes y fue testigo de muchísimos acontecimientos, de los que posteriormente dejó constancia. De hecho, sus relatos han sido cruciales para que los expertos califiquen a Heródoto como uno de los padres de la historia. El arte de indagar en el pasado, quien lo iba a decir, lo puso en boga un hombre fascinado por el presente. But does that mean that no one had travelled in a premeditated way before without any desire to earn money? Of course not! Travellers have always existed, beyond just evasion. In Ancient Greece, for example, some people used to travel to Mount Olympus to witness the feats of the top athletes of the day. Others, however, travelled with the intention of discovering new horizons and other cultures. One example of the latter is the Greek philosopher Herodotus (495-425 BC), widely considered the first tourist in history. He never stopped travelling and went through the Aegean Sea, the current provinces of Turkey and Athens, Thrace, Macedonia, Sicily, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia and more. He travelled through an endless list of places and witnessed many events, which he later recorded for posterity. Además del anillo verde, un trazado circular de 65 Km que rodea el casco urbano de Madrid, hay rutas alternativas que merecen mucho la pena. Uno de los puntos de partida más sorprendente es la zona sur, testigo del pasado industrial de la ciudad. Hablamos de lo que durante el reinado de Carlos III era un acceso a la corte, un tridente de paisaje rural formado por el Paseo de las Delicias, el Paseo de Santa María de la Cabeza y la Ronda de Atocha. Con la llegada del Ferrocarril y el avance tecnológico, toda esa zona se rediseña y se destina a fábricas, viviendas para trabajadores y otros servicios como hospicios, mercados o mataderos. En la actualidad, el aspecto industrial ha dado paso a una imagen más urbana y cosmopolita. El antiguo tridente acoge ahora construcciones fabriles, monumentales en muchos casos, que albergan instituciones culturales y representativas de la ciudad. Otro paseo interesante comienza en el Palacio Real para seguir parte del trazado de la antigua muralla musulmana, lo que se conoce como el Madrid de los oficios y los artesanos. Junto al Rastro, descubrirá el multicultural barrio de Lavapiés. ¡Diferente y muy aconsejable! Si prefiere estar en contacto con la naturaleza, puede hacer una excursión hasta el Monasterio de El Escorial y pasear por los bellos caminos colindantes. No olvidemos tampoco el Parque del Retiro, de acceso asfaltado, pero poseedor de un corazón tremendamente natural.

In addition to the green ring, a circular route 65 km long that runs around Madrid’s urban area, there are also alternative routes worth getting to know. One of the most surprising points of departure is the southern area, a witness of the city’s industrial past. This area, a threepronged route through the rural landscape made up of Paseo de las Delicias, Paseo de Santa María de la Cabeza and Ronda de Atocha, used to be an entrance to the court during the reign of Charles III. With the arrival of the railroads and technological advances, this entire zone was redesigned for factories, workers’ housing and other services like hospices, markets and slaughterhouses. Today this industrial appearance has given way to a more urban, cosmopolitan look. The old trident is now the home to former factories, many of them verging on monumental in appearance, which house cultural institutions and other organisations that are representative of the city. Another interesting route begins at the Palacio Real and follows part of the layout of the old Muslim wall, which is known as the Madrid of Arts and Crafts. Near El Rastro market, you will discover the multicultural neighbourhood of Lavapiés – something different and highly recommended! But if you prefer to be in touch with nature, you can take an outing to the monastery of El Escorial and travel though its beautiful trails nearby. And don’t forget the Parque del Retiro, which has asphalted pathways but a totally natural heart.

Puede ser todo del mismo tono y darle color con un bolso de mano naranja tipo “Hermés”, grande para llevar la documentación. Este look nos da una imagen seria y segura por las líneas de la americana, pero a la vez dinámica por el movimiento del pantalón. Los zapatos, que no se verán a penas, deben ser cómodos y tener un tacón de entre 5 y 10 cm. Llevaremos poca bisutería, ya que las pulseras o los collares largos podrían hacer ruido en una reunión. Unos pendientes largos y finos y un gran anillo serían suficientes. Respecto al maquillaje, es mejor que sea suave; y el pelo, si no es my largo, llevarlo suelto y retirado de la cara. Si es largo, una cola atada con tu propio pelo. Noche Dejaríamos el pantalón, los zapatos y el top, aunque este último lo podríamos sustituir por un cuerpo palabra de honor. El cambio más significativo sería una chaqueta con manga 3/4 con pequeños paillettes en un dorado mate, que nos aportará sofisticación y luz al rostro. Como accesorio elegiremos unos pendientes pequeños, una o varias cadenas en diferentes largos y una o varias pulseras anchas. Intensificaremos el maquillaje, potenciando los ojos o la boca, nunca ambas. Por supuesto, en la mano tendremos un pequeño clutch para llevar lo imprescindible. El peinado puede ser un recogido o bien suelto, pero siempre bien cuidado. El cinturón muy fino con una hebilla joya, o uno ancho metálico y plano dorado, dependiendo del tipo de talle de la mujer. No olvidéis el perfume, de noche más intenso. Estilismo para él: Día Propongo un traje azul oscuro, de corte slim fit, ya que es tendencia y aportará un look más actual. La camisa blanca -o azul Franciadebe combinar con una corbata ligeramente estampada, del mismo tono que el traje. Los zapatos pueden ser unos castellanos o tipo ejecutivo en negro, el calcetín ejecutivo siempre largo y negro, igual que el cinturón. Finalizaríamos con un reloj grande y un maletín portadocumentos oscuro o color cuero. Noche Optaremos por una camisa blanca. Le daremos un toque de elegancia y distinción cambiando la corbata por una lisa o por una que tenga un pequeño motivo de un color intenso, rojo o verde. Colocaremos un pañuelo de seda a juego en el bolsillo de la americana. Los zapatos, unos Oxford negros. El perfume también de noche puede ser más intenso. They were cheeky hooligans; only they could have made this ode to Madrid with this particular touch of sarcasm. Hotel Claris “Nothing is a problem” Opinión escrita el 28/5/2014 This hotel is modern with a touch of difference with antiques in each room. It is causal but is refined and elegant. The team of staff are more than pleasant. The hello is genuine as is their smiles. Nothing is a problem and they go to great lengths to ensure your stay is the best most relaxing time you can have. It is well equipped with a a small gym and a beautiful pool on the terrace. The bar on the 7th floor is hard to leave and the perfect place for pre and post dinner drinks. Breakfast is a pleasant buffet that has a personal touch that is attentive to your needs. A perfect location near some great restaurants and sights. This hotel is hard to beat. Credit to the management and staff for making it a break to remember and a hotel to return to. Hotel Bagués “Anniversaire” Opinión escrita el 15/1/2014 Superbe hotel en plein milieu de la Ramblas! I always try to book a hotel that is a "home from home" design wise. This hotel is absolutely beautiful! The design of the hotel is also amazing, centred around a indoor "courtyard". The hotel is very modern in design but is sumptuous also with the rooms kitted out with leather furniture and fur throws. We stayed in a junior suite which was very very nice, with the bathroom separated from the bedroom via a glass panel. Staff are super friendly and very helpful. The location of the hotel is very central also, within walking distance of the main squares and fountains etc. The rooftop terrace and pool area is one of the reasons that I booked the hotel. We were given a complimentary glass of champagne on arrival which was a bonus! The hotel is very chilled and relaxed. So is Madrid. The Ice bar on the ground floor is also gorgeous. We only ate in the restaurant for breakfast which was delicious - would recommend scrambled eggs with bacon, but they cater for a variety of nationalities with pastries, fresh cuts of meat and cheese etc. The hotel is expensive but I feel worth every penny. I'm already looking to book another few days in Madrid next spring and will definitely be staying at the Urban Hotel. Lo pudo comprobar Bimba Bosé, que abrió el ciclo el pasado mes de marzo, inundando el GlassBar de buena música y mucha magia. La siguen -una vez al mes, hasta el próximo diciembre- artistas como Silvia Prada, Borja Peña, Pascal Moscheni o Rossy de Palma, una de las grandes sorpresas del cartel. No se lo pierdan, porque además, podrán degustar los combinados de la nueva carta de temporada presentada por los responsables de Hotel Urban. Todos los cócteles tienen una base de Tequila, Aloe Vera o Mezcal. But one terrace that deserves special mention is the Terraza del Urban and its latest initiative: GLASSsound. En esta OCASIÓN, charlamos con JULIA LORENTE (Valencia, 1974), que EMPEZÓ a TRABAJAR en DERBY HOTELS en 2008. En su MANERA de HABLAR uno PERCIBE SERENIDAD y DECISIÓN, CUALIDADES que le HAN SERVIDO para llegar a DIRIGIR el DEPARTAMENTO DE PISOS de CINCO de los HOTELES que la COMPAÑÍA tiene en BARCELONA. For this issue we are talking to JULIA LORENTE (Valencia, 1974), who began to work at DERBY HOTELS in 2008. One can sense SERENITY and DECISIVENESS in the way she talks, qualities that have helped put her in charge of the HOUSEKEEPING DEPARTMENT at five of the company’s hotels in BARCELONA.

Me contrataron para el puesto de gobernanta del Hotel Granados, que había abierto dos años antes. Me gusta tenerlo todo controlado y al poco tiempo de estar aquí cambié lo que pensaba que podía funcionar mejor, siempre con la aprobación de dirección. La palabra gobernanta suena contundente. Más de lo que realmente es... Lo que pasa es que si no hay una persona que lidere el departamento de pisos (limpieza y servicio de camareras), recepción se resiente y el hotel no funciona. Se necesita un buen engranaje. Siempre comparo los hoteles con el teatro. Tienes un escenario, que es el hotel; los actores, que son los trabajadores; y los espectadores, que son los clientes. Representas tu papel lo mejor posible para que el cliente esté contento con lo que vive. ¿Qué es lo que requiere específicamente su trabajo? Previsión, observación y orden. Hay que pensar que prácticamente solo tenemos contacto con los clientes por las tardes, cuando hacemos las ‘descubiertas’. Es en ese momento cuando conocemos su comportamiento y puedes analizar cómo prefiere las cosas. Imagino que también es importante saber dirigir a su equipo. ¡Sin duda! Hay que valorar el trabajo de las personas que limpian y que sirven, mantenerlas motivadas, porque al fin y al cabo su trabajo es de los más duros que hay en un hotel.

I was hired as a housekeeper in the Hotel Granados two years after it opened. I like having everything under control, and shortly after starting I changed to what I thought might work better, always with the approval of management. The word housekeeper sounds intimidating. More than it really is… But the fact is that if there is no one in charge of the Housekeeping Department (cleaning and chambermaid service), reception pays the price and the hotel doesn’t work. Everything has to work together smoothly. I always compare hotels to the theatre. You have the stage, which is the hotel; the actors, which are the workers; and the spectators, which are the guests. You play your role the best you can so the guests are happy with their experience there. What specifically does your job require? Foresight, watchfulness and order. You have to remember that we practically only have contact with the clients in the afternoons when we do the “turn-downs”. That is when we learn about their behaviour and you can analyse how they like things to be. I imagine that knowing how to lead your team is also important. Of course! You have to value the work done by the people who clean and serve. You have to keep them motivated because ultimately they have the hardest jobs in a hotel.

¿Es muy alto el nivel de exigencia en Derby Hotels Collection? ¡Mucho! Uno puede entrar y quedarse maravillado con las obras de arte o los bombones de bienvenida en las habitaciones, pero si la limpieza no va acorde con los detalles, el cliente se va a ir insatisfecho. Derby Hotels Collection intenta que el cliente se sienta como en casa. ¿Lo consiguen siempre? Hacemos lo que podemos. Por ejemplo, hay algún cliente del Suites Avenue que ha entrado en nuestra web y ha visto que en las fotos de las habitaciones había una butaca de diseño que luego ha pedido. Es complicado pasar los muebles de una habitación a otra, pero… Seguro que tiene alguna que otra anécdota. Tuve el placer de conocer a Maruja Torres cuando se alojó en el Hotel Granados. ¿Ninguna situación inesperada? Hombre, a veces, si tocas el timbre de una habitación y nadie te contesta, entras. Más de una y dos veces me he encontrado situaciones comprometidas… y hasta ahí puedo leer. Dígame, ¿tiene algún viaje pendiente? El viaje de mi vida es ir a Nueva York. ¡Siempre lo he deseado!

You can enter and be amazed by the works of art or welcome chocolates in the rooms, but if the cleaning isn’t on par with these details, our guests are not going to be satisfied. Derby Hotels Collection tries to make sure that our guests feel at home. Do you always accomplish this? We do everything we can. For example, a few guests in the Suites Avenue have entered our website and seen that there was a designer armchair in the photographs that they have asked for. It’s hard to move furniture from one room to another, but… I’m sure you’ve got a few stories. I had the pleasure of meeting Maruja Torres when she stayed at the Hotel Granados. Any unexpected situations? Well, sometimes you ring the bell to a room and no one answers so you enter. I’ve stumbled upon compromising situations more than once… and that’s all I can say! So do you have any trips planned? The trip of my life would be to New York. I’ve always wanted to go there!

¿Quién dijo aburrimiento? Sea cual sea el valor añadido, lo cierto es que hay algunos aeródromos increíbles. El número 1, votado como el mejor del mundo en los últimos premios World Airport 2014, es el aeropuerto de Changi (Singapur). Fue creado en 1981, emplea a más de 28.000 personas y recibe anualmente más de 50 millones de pasajeros. Sus diseñadores hablan más de una experiencia de viaje en sí misma. Dispone de piscina, de un cine, de un centro multimedia, de un parque infantil e incluso de un espectacular jardín temático dedicado a las mariposas. Otra de sus principales atracciones es el llamado ‘Árbol Social’, construido con pantallas de alta definición. Se trata de una instalación digital interactiva que permite a los viajeros compartir experiencias a través de vídeos y fotografías. En segundo lugar, destaca el aeropuerto de Incheon (Seúl), uno de los más avanzados desde el punto de vista tecnológico. Entre otras cosas, cuenta con un buen observatorio donde contemplar los despegues y aterrizajes de los aviones o el Korean Cultural Street, un lugar muy interesante para conocer de cerca la cultura tradicional coreana y sus construcciones. Completa el podio el aeropuerto de Schiphol, situado a 15 Km de Amsterdam. Acoge una gran cantidad de vuelos intercontinentales, sobretodo a América del Norte. Su oferta de ocio es amplísima: para los más inquietos, dispone de una biblioteca y de una exhibición permanente de obras que pertenecen al Rijkmuseum. Por otro lado, los más diletantes podrán disfrutar de un casino, un spa y del Airport Park, un espacio interior donde tomar el sol y relajarse.

The top airports are rounded out by Schiphol, located 15 km from Amsterday. It has a huge range of intercontinental flights, especially to North America. Its range of entertainment is extremely extensive: for the more curious it has a library and a permanent exhibition of artwork from the Rijkmuseum. On the other hand, the more dilettantes can enjoy a casino, a spa and the Airport Park, an interior space where they can sun themselves and relax.

Es un icono arquitectónico y uno de los proyectos de ingeniería más caros de la historia. Otro de los que cuenta con interesantes atracciones es el Aeropuerto Internacional de Beijing. Es un complejo espectacular, del que sobresale la Terminal 3 (remodelada en 2008, con motivo de los JJOO). Está cubierta por una gigantesca estructura metálica de color rojo y cuenta con algunos elementos decorativos típicos de la cultura china: unas tallas que imitan el Muro de los Nueve Dragones o los vergeles interiores que recrean los jardines imperiales. Para finalizar, no se pierdan el Biergärten del aeropuerto Franz Josef Strauss (Munich), una explanada arbolada en la que es posible degustar la afamada cerveza bávara; o el Aeropuerto Internacional de Vancouver, que tiene una interesante colección de arte canadiense y una buena muestra de la flora y fauna locales.

Se inauguró el 10 de enero de 1863, aunque unos meses antes el rotativo Times calificaba el invento de “insulto al sentido común”. Sin embargo, las cifras acabaron por darle la razón a Charles Person, su visionario creador: en su primer año de vida, 11.8 millones de pasajeros utilizaron la célebre Metropolitan Line, la línea pionera del metro. En aquel entonces, la ciudad tenía unos 3,2 millones de habitantes. El metropolitano favoreció la rápida expansión de la ciudad y consiguió que los obreros llegaran a tiempo a sus trabajaos, a la par que les permitía abandonar sus pequeñas residencias del centro de Londres para mudarse a las afueras, a casas más grandes con jardín. Aún así, su desarrollo no fue nada sencillo. It has beautiful pathways, even though 470 years ago it was more a poor, marshy area occupied by farmers and surrounded by forests. However, it was the ideal hunting ground, the passion of the kings of that period. The royal court was housed at Westminster Palace, and in 1536 King Henry VIII decided to create a deer park that was conveniently nearby. He purchased lands in St. James’s, fenced it in and built a hunting ground that would later become St. James’s Palace.

Cuando regresó, ordenó rediseñar el Parque de St. James. Al parecer, fue el paisajista André Mollet quien se encargó de los retoques. El francés trazó una pieza central despampanante: un canal rectangular que medía 780 metros de largo por 40 de ancho y que estaba flanqueado por preciosas avenidas arboladas. El rediseño fue un éxito y Carlos II decidió abrir el parque al público.

The park remained virtually the same until the proclamation of King James’s I. The monarch drained it, landscaped it and used it to house his own particular collection of animals, which included camels, crocodiles and even an elephant. Still, the most significant reform came from Charles II, who became king in 1660. The sovereign, who was exiled in France after the Civil War, was captivated by the gardens owned by the French royalty, which were extremely elaborate and were filled by geometric shapes. When he returned, he ordered St. James’s Park redesigned. Apparently, landscaper André Mollet was in charge of the reforms. This Frenchman created a stunning central piece: a rectangular canal that measured 780 metres long by 40 wide and was flanked by precious tree-lined avenues. The redesign was a success and Charles II decided to open the park to the public.

La forma de proceder de Amazon es la misma que utiliza la compañía en cualquier otra área de negocio: las galerías involucradas (algunas de mucho prestigio como Paddle8, Holden Luntz o The McLoughin) venden directamente a los clientes a través de su plataforma y Amazon se lleva una comisión por cada venta. Por supuesto, también hay quien se lo monta por su cuenta. Es el caso la todopoderosa Saatchi, una galería británica que ha creado su propia ‘e-boutique’ y que cuenta con una cartera de más de 40.000 artistas. A juzgar por los números, no les ha ido nada mal. Su directora, Rebecca Wilson, aseguraba recientemente que “vendemos más arte online al mes que la mayoría de las galerías físicas en un año”. El tiempo dirá si la propuesta es extrapolable a otros países. De momento, en España ya han surgido propuestas similares, como Gunter Gallery, Coon Art y Bygart.

Saatchi’s director, Rebecca Wilson, recently claimed that “we sell more art online per month than the majority of physical galleries in one year”. Time will tell whether this idea can be extrapolated to other countries. For the time being, in Spain similar initiatives like Gunter Gallery, Coon Art and Bygart have emerged.

Sin embargo, los TIEMPOS cambian y hay que READAPTAR las FÓRMULAS. Hay EMPRESARIOS que PROPONEN un CAMBIO DE ESCENA y que organizan CONCIERTOS en los LUGARES más INSOSPECHADOS, como por ejemplo una ANTIGUA FUNERARIA o una CÁMARA FRIGORÍFICA. Un buen ejemplo de ello es la iglesia SaintEustache, que ha vivido momentos históricos desde su construcción en 1637: el bautizo de Molière, la primera comunión de Luis XIV y el concierto triunfal de Patti Smith en 2011. No es una broma, el templo ha acogido conciertos de punk y también ha visto crecer a importantes formaciones de jazz. Cada domingo a las 17h30 hay actuaciones gratuitas, en las cuales la estrella es el organista. Le Carmen se encuentra en la antigua casapalacio de George Bizet, autor de la famosa ópera ‘Carmen’. Musicalmente hablando, no quedan aquí grandes rasgos de romanticismo. Ha pasado el tiempo y, donde antes se sentaban compositores clásicos, ahora bailan y cantan los más hipsters. Ofrece regularmente noches de música electrónica. Hace seis años un grupo de inversores decidió transformar una funeraria en Le Cenquatre en un nuevo hogar para la cultura. Se realizan espectáculos de danza, se proyectan películas y por supuesto, también hay conciertos. Por su escenario han pasado grupos de pop contemporáneo o intérpretes de canción francesa tradicional.

Contemporary pop groups and more traditional French chanson singers have all performed on its stage.

Cualquier parisino que se precie mantiene una distancia prudente respecto a la zona que rodea la Biblioteca Nacional de Francia, demasiado moderna para ellos. Pero hay una excepción: Les Frigos: Les Voutes. Hablamos de un depósito que se utilizaba para almacenar carros refrigerados y cuyo subterráneo abovedado se emplea ahora para conciertos y exposiciones. Improbable y frío, pero cierto. Cabe destacar también Le Cabaret Sauvage, un escenario encantador, situado en el Parc de la Villette. La madera y el terciopelo que sostienen y decoran la carpa son mágicos, así como el programa musical, que se nutre habitualmente de primeras espadas como el trompetista norteamericano Roy Hargove o el cantante malí Fatoumata Diawara.

Any self-respecting Parisian keeps a careful distance from the zone around the French National Library, which is too modern for them. But there is one exception: Les Frigos: Les Voutes. This is a repository which used to be used to house refrigerated carts whose vaulted underground is now used for concerts and exhibitions. Unlikely, and cold, by the way! Also worth note is Le Cabaret Sauvage, a charming venue located in Parc de la Villette. The wood and velvet which sustain and decorate the tent are magical, as is the musical programming, which often features topnotch as like the American trumpeter Roy Hargove and the Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara.
