Hotel Banke in Paris, 2010 was also a year of new openings: the La Republica building, a new concept in loft apartments located in the industrial district of 22@, Barcelona’s SoHo. And after the summer comes Barcelona’s Hotel Bagués.

The hotel will house the Masriera jewellery museum with a permanent exhibition of outstanding artistic value featuring pieces that have been displayed at New York’s Metropolitan Museum. An architectural gem, the museum has been listed as a monu-

ment, which will place us in the historic centre of Barcelona, Las Ramblas.

We have recently reached a cooperation agreement to facilitate our guests’ travels with the Italian company Boscolo Hotels, which has enabled us to expand our destinations internationally in cities like Milan, Venice, Rome, Prague and Budapest.

LLUÍS MASRIERA Lluís Masriera, nacido en 1872, fue el introductor en España del Art Nouveau en joyería, donde destacó como uno de los referentes más significativos del panorama internacional.

La dimensión de su obra como joyero y orfebre fue muy importante, puesto que tuvo la iniciativa de crear un sistema de moldes y troqueles que le permitieron trabajar en serie y rentabilizar su producción.

Aunque menos conocida, también fue destacable su faceta de pintor: desde los primeros temas simbolistas, muy próximos a sus joyas plagadas de ninfas, flores y libélulas, hasta los lienzos de temática orientalista.

And what best way to celebrate such a wonderful relationship than by renovating the mythical Regulador, the building that until recently was the home to one of the most renowned jeweler, longstanding goldworkers in the city. Located right in the heart of Barcelona on Las Ramblas, the Hotel Bagués will have 31 luxury rooms, each of which will house an exclusive Masriera piece. LLUÍS MASRIERA Lluís Masriera, born in 1872, was the introductory one in Spain of the Art nouveau in jeweler's shop, although he also came to stand out as one of the most important benchmarks on the international scene. The dimension of his oeuvre as a goldsmith and jeweler was extremely important, given that he had the initiative to create a system of moulds and stencils that enabled him to create series and make his output profitable. Even though it is less known, his facet as a painter is also important: from the first symbolist subjects, quite similar to his jewellery, ridden with nymphs, flowers and dragonflies, to his more Orientalist canvases.

Esta última tendencia es hija del ambicioso plan de remodelación que trazó el Barón Haussman a mediados del XIX. Durante años París fue tomando la forma de un laberinto de callejuelas en el que abundaban las casas de madera, pertenecientes a la clase media. Fue justo en 1852 cuando Haussman dio impulso a la transformación del centro de la ciudad, que se convirtió en un escaparate de grandes avenidas y elegantes edificios de estilo neoclásico.

Ahora, toda esta efervescencia la ha recogido Derby Hotels Collection, diseñando un establecimiento bello y funcional que incorpora uno de los sellos de identidad de la compañía dirigida por Jordi Clos: el concepto hotel-museo. Ello se plasma en las obras de arte que se exhiben en las zonas comunes, como por ejemplo el mosaico central del hall; y en las habitaciones, donde predomina el eclecticismo de sus piezas.

he exquisiteness of the Hotel Banke is measured by the harmony of the architectural elements defining it: classicism and modernity. This latter trend is the outcome of the ambitious remodelling programme that Baron Haussman laid out in the mid-19th century. For years Paris gradually took shape as a labyrinth of tiny streets riddled with wooden houses for the middle class. It was precisely in 1852 when Haussman gave the impetus to transform the city centre, which became a showcase of broad avenues and elegant neoclassical-style buildings.

Now Derby Hotels Collection has captured this effervescence by designing a lovely yet functional hotel that includes one of hallmarks of the company run by Jordi Clos: the concept of hotel-museum. This is manifested in the works of art exhibited in the communal areas, such as

the mosaic in the middle of the lobby, and the rooms, where the eclecticism of the pieces prevails.

This spirit clearly fits in perfectly with the environment of the hotel, which includes the Palace of the Ópera of Paris designed by Charles Ott, and the Museé Louvre, located just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.

On the first flood, pride of place was given to the original architectural elements like moulding, the ceiling height and the parquet flooring, brining Hausmann’s style into the 21st century.

CULTURE AND GOURMET For this summer the Banke has come up with the following promotions: first, the cultural package, which includes two nights in a double room and free, unlimited access to more than 70 museums and monuments in Paris with no queues. The second is the gourmet package, where you can eat in the Josefin Restaurant and have a mixed drink in the LolaBar. And last is the ‘Envie de Paris’’, which offers two nights in a room with views of the Sacré Coeur.

No en vano, la lista de entrantes y de segundos, en los que abundan la carne y el pescado, está abarrotada de recetas españolas: el empedrat catalán, los huevos estrellados con jamón de bellota y aceite de trufa blanca; o el suquet de rape y la espalda de cabrito asada en su jugo con judías del ganxet.

Por si fuera poco, el Hotel Banke también dispone del Lolabar, un local en el que la carta de tapas y cócteles impregna a los visitantes de insólitas fragancias ibéricas. Los clientes podrán disfrutar desde las 11.00 h hasta media noche de las mejores especialidades españolas

como la tortilla de patata, el mini bikini mallorquín, las ‘bravas’ o los calamares a la andaluza.

TEAPHILOSOPHY A nadie le amarga un dulce…¡ni dos, ni tres! Tanto Josefin (durante su horario de apertura) como LolaBar han lanzado una propuesta realmente sorprendente. A parte de los que hay en la carta, los comensales podrán degustar una amplia gama de postres que se irán presentando paulatinamente.

Crèpes, hojaldres, tartaletas, chocolate, crema, nata, trufa…un sinfín de propuestas que desfilarán sugerentes por delante de sus ojos. Sin duda, una tentación casi irresistible, que cobrará si cabe más sentido en LolaBar. Entre relajantes elementos de una decoración presidida por la madera negra ahumada de las sillas y los taburetes transparentes ‘ghost’, podrá disfrutar de una agradable tarde de merienda.

Rica en azúcar, será una innovadora hora del té inglesa.

ramed in a warm atmosphere with a personalised, relaxed atmosphere, Spanish flavour takes over Paris thanks to Chef George Pierre, who brings to the Parisian table at the Josefin restaurant a succulent selection of the best dishes from Spain. Not for nothing, the list of first and second courses, which feature meat and fish, is peppered with Spanish dishes: Catalan empedrat (bean and cod salad), fried eggs with acornfed aged ham and white truffle oil, and monkfish soup or baby rack of lamb roasted au jus with ganxet beans.

And as if that weren’t enough, the Hotel Banke also has the Lolabar, a locale where the menu of tapas and cocktails imbues visitors with unique Iberian scents. The clients can enjoy the top Spanish specialities from 11 am to midnight, including Spanish potato omelette, a mini Mallorcan grilled ham and

cheese sandwich, potatoes with spicy sauce and deep fried calamari Andalusian style.

TEAPHILOSOPHY Nobody resents a sweet... or two or three of them! Both Josefin (while it is open) and the Lolabar have launched a truly delightful proposal.

Apart from the desserts on the menu, diners can also savour a wide range of desserts that will gradually be presented. Crepes, puff pastries, mini-tarts, chocolate, cream, whipped cream, truffles... an endless list of ideas that will parade enticingly before your eyes.

This is a virtually irresistible temptation which gains even more meaning in the Lolabar.

Its relaxing decor featuring the smoked black wood of the seats and the transparent “Ghost” stools guests can enjoy a pleasant afternoon snack. Rich in sugar, it will be an innovative English teatime!

MONTPARNASSE, EL HOGAR DE LAS MUSAS MONTPARNASSE, THE MUSE’S HOUSE por el arquitecto Roger Saubot. Se edificó entre 1969 y 1972, sobre el emplazamiento de la antigua estación homónima.

No es de extrañar entonces que a lo largo del año reciba aproximadamente 600.000 turistas, que acuden para gozar de una de las mejores panorámicas que se pueden tener de la ciudad de la luz. n 1860 it was absorbed into Paris’ 14th district. In the 18th century the hill of Montparnasse was levelled to build a boulevard, where numerous dance clubs and cabarets were opened during the days of the French Revolution. Next to Montmartre, is the bohemian zone of Paris par excellence. We’re talking about none other than Montparnasse.

This area mainly became famous in the early 20th century during the so-called Annés folles (mad years).

They began in the 1910 and lasted until the onset of World War II, when the Parisian artistic circles migrated to Montparnasse, where they were joined by creators from all over the world, including Picasso, Apollinaire, Pound, Modigliani, Diego Rivera, Dalí and Miró. Precisely one of the main tourist attractions of the neighbourhood is the Le Cimetière du Sud, where the remains of some of

these characters lay at rest. It was created in 1842 on land where farms used to be. Another mustsee on this route is the Tour MaineMontparnasse, designed by architect Roger Saubot. It was built between 1969 and 1972 on the site of the former station of the same name. It became (and remains) the tallest skyscraper in Paris.

So it should come as no surprise that over the course of a year it hosts around 600,000 tourists who come to enjoy one of the best views of the City of Light.

n 1860 fue absorbido en el distrito número XIV de París. Fue bautizado por un grupo de estudiantes que aludieron a sus características geográficas y al significado que la mitología griega atribuyó a Parnasse, el hogar de las musas de las artes y las ciencias.

En el siglo XVIII la colina que lo alberga fue nivelada para construir un Boulevard, en el cual se instalaron numerosos clubs de baile y cabarés que abrieron sus puertas en tiempos de la Revolución Francesa. Junto con Montmartre, es la zona bohemia por excelencia de París.

Es, por supuesto: Montparnasse.

Principalmente, esta zona se hizo famosa a comienzos del XX, durante los llamados Annés folles (años locos). Ocurrió que desde 1910 y hasta el comienzo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los circuitos artísticos parisinos migraron a Montparnasse, donde se sumaron creadores de todo el mundo. Por poner algún ejemplo: Picasso, Apollinaire, Pound, Modigliani, Diego Rivera, Dalí o Miró.

or nombre y envergadura, el Musée d’Orsay ha vivido casi siempre a la sombra del imponente Louvre, absorbedor por antonomasia del turismo cultural de la ciudad de la luz. El d’Orsay quizás nunca llegue a morir de éxito, pero precisamente eso es lo que hace especial a este bellísimo espacio en el que los más entendidos suelen dejarse caer para admirar, entre otras, la completísima colección de pintura impresionista.

De entrada, el museo no está en un edificio cualquiera. Es más, probablemente habría que considerar al edificio como la primera obra de arte visible del mismo. Situado en el corazón de París, al lado del Sena y frente al jardín de las Tuileries, se instaló en la antigua estación de Orsay, un impresionante inmueble construido para la Exposición Universal de 1900.

De forma genérica, el museo recoge la historia del arte que transcurre entre los maestros antiguos, que están en el Louvre; y el arte moderno y contemporáneo, en el Centro Georges Pompidou. Una de las máximas atracciones del

Well, since we didn’t want it to only be black and white, we ended up falling for the idea of playing with the kind of photography that Warhol used at The Factory in the late 1960s.

Nos gustaría tener nuevos productores siempre, porque nos resulta más interesante que alguien aporte algo externo. Lo que nos pasó en el disco anterior de acabar produciéndolo nosotros…fue un accidente.

Why did you change producers and decide to call Neal X and Tony James?

We always like having new producers because it’s more interesting for us to work with someone who brings something from the outside.

Eso no es el Madrid de los años 80 ni es el Madrid de ahora. Son unas determinadas personas dentro de unos determinados ambientes, que tampoco son el reflejo de lo mayoritario.

What remains of Madrid’s awakening in the 1980s and the air of self-destruction back then?

That’s not the Madrid of the 1980s or the Madrid of today. It’s certain people within certain circles, which are in no way a reflection of the majority. So you wonder: did so much really happen that way in Madrid or in Barcelona during the 1980s? No, the same happens now.

Cuando había singles, nos peleábamos para que la cara B fuera inédita. Hoy en día es la industria la que te pide algo nuevo. Y eso tampoco nos gusta. Si el artista quiere, porque tiene el concepto o la idea de hacer una remezcla, que la haga. Pero es absurdo que una compañía de discos le pida una versión de La Macarena a Los del Río, que ni se enteraron de que se la estaban pidiendo como medio de promoción.

I get the feeling that you’ve always done what you wanted with your music.

Back when there were singles, we fought to get the B side to have something unpublished.

Today the industry asks you for something new.

And we don’t really like that. If the artist wants, because they have the concept or the idea of doing a remix, let them do it. But it’s absurd for a record company to ask for a cover of La Macarena or Los del Río, and they didn’t even realise they were asking for promotional purposes. ¿La decisión siempre le corresponde a uno mismo?

The most responsible one, a kitchen porter. ¿Qué otros cargos ha desempeñado?

Realmente he hecho un largo viaje por el Caesar. Al principio empecé en la cocina, y a los pocos meses ya estaba en su recepción.

Mientras, tuve tiempo de tener una corta y exótica aventura en el departamento de mantenimiento.

Have you had the opportunity to occupy other offices?

I made a "trip" around the Caesar. At the very beginning it was our kitchen and after few months I became a porter in our Reception. In the meantime I had short and exotic adventure in the maintenance department. ¡Intrépido!

Pocos meses después me ofrecieron liderar el turno de noche, lo acepté sin dudar ni un momento. Al cabo de dos años me propusieron empezar en el departamento de reservas.

Few months later I was offered a position of the night shift leader and I took it without any hesitation! After 2 years, I received a proposition to start in reservations.

All of them were great fun! Mainly, because at every each position, I was blessed with some great colleagues and I have lots of very good memories from every department. ¿Le ha ayudado el hecho de ver el hotel desde tantos puntos de vista?

Pienso que eso me ha dado la oportunidad de entender los pilares básicos del negocio. Sería incapaz de adquirir estos conocimientos a través de un curso. Lo importante es vivir el hotel día día.

What has helped you in the fact of having performed many roles inside the company?

I think it gave me a huge opportunity to

understand the basics of this business. I will be unable to get this sort knowledge at any courses. ¿Qué tiene Derby Hotels Collection que no tengan otras empresas?

Francamente, es mi primer y único trabajo en el Reino Unido. Aún así, puedo compararlo con otros que he tenido en Polonia. Yo destacaría por encima de todo la atmósfera cálida y amistosa que se respira en DHC. Seguramente eso tiene que ver con sus orígenes. He estado un par de veces en España y la gente es tremendamente amable.

What has Derby Hotels Collection that other companies do not have?

To be honest, this is my first and only job in UK. However I can compare it to some places in Poland. I would highlight the really friendly ambient of DHC. I think, it has got something to do with our origins. I have been a couple of times in Spain and I’m finding Spanish people very friendly and warm and this is one of the main reasons why I enjoy to work here. ¿Y su sello de identidad, cuál es? ¡Ésta es muy fácil!: La colección de arte que mostramos en cada uno de los hoteles nos hace realmente únicos.

Tal vez, al trabajar diariamente rodeado de tantas piezas antiguas y de tanto valor hace que seas menos consciente de ello. Pero eso es algo que no deberíamos olvidar.

Working on daily basis surrounded by all these ancient pieces of art makes us maybe a bit unaware about it.

However, I bet you that you will not find any other hotel with so many artifacts and we should not forget about it. ¿Cómo era el hotel antes de la reforma del 2008 y cómo es ahora?

Al principio, el Caesar era un hotel de 3 estrellas. Pero con la reforma introdujimos una serie de mejoras considerable. La lista es muy larga, así que déjeme decirle sólo que el Caesar se ha convertido en un 4 estrellas que dispone de

servicios de alta calidad.

How was it the hotel before the reform of 2008 and how it is now?

We were a 3 star hotel at the start. In spite, with the reform we introduced some improvements. The list would be to long…so let just say that we became a professional 4 star hotel with high quality services. ¿Es por eso que el Caesar goza de tanta popularidad en Londres?

Hay varias razones. Básicamente, yo diría que se debe a su ubicación. Estamos en el centro de una tranquila zona residencial, y sin embargo, sólo se tardan 10 minutos en llegar al oeste de

la ciudad, donde se encuentran las principales atracciones turísticas….

El maridaje corre a cargo de un estupendo Champagne Perrier Jouët Brut.

El respeto por la materia prima, la justa sofisticación y el acierto en los puntos de cocción son las claves de este cielo de Madrid.

he range of eating options at the Hotel Urban doubles in the summertime due to the opening of the ‘El Cielo del Urban’ restaurant, located on the roof of the hotel. Surrounded by spectacular views of old Madrid, the terrace features meticulous design and an extremely comfortable atmosphere. It is unquestionably an oasis in the middle of the big city: the ideal setting for enjoying an intimate dinner or a drink while the city unfolds at your feet.

Likewise, above diners’ heads there is a lovely glass structure that gives the ‘Cielo del Urban’ a Versailles-like touch. Glass, silver, mirrors and low lighting are just some of the elements that help to create a totally cosy atmosphere.

As for the cuisine, is charged Joaquín Felipe as commander of the stove. He has dreamt up a gourmet meal for ‘El Cielo del Urban’ that includes an appetiser based on Iberian acorn-fed ham and three other dishes of your choice, such as foie gras shavings with Pedro Ximenez as a first course, hake from Celeiro to continue, and finally beef tenderloin form Bravo with courgette and marrow. The match would be a wonderful Perrier Jouët Brut champagne.

And regarding the raw materials, the right sophistication and cooking everything until its perfect point are the keys of this heaven over Madrid.

Sin embargo, esto no quiere decir que las fabulosas terrazas de las que disponen tanto el Hotel Claris como el Granados 83 no abran en invierno. Ambas son espacios todo terreno, preparadas para ofrecer servicios de restauración, haga frío o calor: eventos, comidas, cenas o fiestas privadas.

El Hotel Claris, por ejemplo, ofrece un menú de mediodía llamado Factory, que cambia cada semana y que se nutre de los mejores productos de la cocina mediterránea. Una vez ha caído el Sol, los combinados cobran protagonismo: desde el clásico bloody mary hasta el atrevido melorita, una mixtura de tequila reposado, licor de melón y lima. Por su lado, la Terraza bar 8 del Granados 83 también funciona durante todo el año. Los responsables del hotel se encargan del acondicionamiento del espacio, cubriéndolo con una lona. Both are all-terrain terraces, prepared for offering restaurants services in both the cold and the heat: events, lunches, dinners or private parties.

The Hotel Claris, for example, offers a lunchtime menu called Factory, which changes each week and is fed with the best products from Mediterranean cooking.

Once the sun has set, cocktails come to the fore, from the classic Bloody Mary to the daring Melorite, a mixture of tequila, melon liqueur and lime. Another of the terrace’s attractions is live music, which brightens the evening four days a week in the summertime.

The Terrace Bar 8 of the Granados 83 also operates all year round.

The hotel managers ensure that the space is set up by covering it with canvas.

And from there on out, whatever our guests want: a menu for lunch (available at night, too) or a wonderful selection of cocktails that the bartender will be happy to personalise, if you wish.

The Granados 83 was designed as a space of spaces, a perspective that has generated an eclectic sequence of contrasts between factory style, futuristic style, ethnic art and vintage aesthetics.

It is a hotel designed for things to happen and to stimulate the senses. Once you have crossed the threshold you can already sense the magic given off by everything you see with your eyes.

Every nook has its charm: from the entrance, made of an ethnically inspired walkway, to the terrace, a wonderful lookout point over the Eixample neighbourhood, destined to be Barcelona’s Soho.

Another of the Granados 83’s hallmarks is the variety of materials used in its construction and decor. In the former, red brick, concrete, iron and stone were used. In the latter, marble, steel, glass and leather predominate. This combination of craft and technique, natural lighting from above and artificial lighting is the latest generation in atmospheres. il J. Wolman (19291955) fue un pionero en la búsqueda de las posibilidades de intersección y alteración del lenguaje y visual y el lenguaje escrito.

Esta muestra, la primera que se dedica íntegramente a Wolman en España, está formada por unas 250 obras y otros documentos. Desde L’Anticoncept (1951) hasta a Voir de mémoire (1955), recoge las piezas más significativas y fértiles de su carrera, algunas de las cuales inéditas hasta ahora.

El creador francés fue uno de los miembros más destacados del movimiento artístico e intelectual del letrismo, al que se adhirió tempranamente.

Ideado por Isidre Isou a mediados de los años 40’s, siguiendo la estela del dadaísmo y el futurismo de principios del siglo XX, el letrismo tenía la convicción de que tanto en la poesía, como en la música y la pintura ya se había logrado alcanzar la cima.

Para empezar un nuevo ciclo creativo se requería volver al principio, deconstruir los lenguajes artísticos.

En definitiva, volver a los signos, vacíos de su carga semántica: volver a las letras.

La exposición se articula en cuatro ámbitos.

El primero, se basa en la película L’Anticoncept, que en su momento se proyectaba encima de un globo de helio colocado delante de la cortina del cine, en lugar de hacerlo sobre la pantalla tradicional.

El segundo ámbito se centra en los años en que Wolman y Guy Debord, entre otros, fundan la Internacional Letrista.

En la sala siguiente se encuentran las composiciones de arte scotch; y finalmente, en el último espacio, se presentan los trabajos relacionados con el movimiento separatista, creado en 1977.

The French creator was one of the most prominent members of the artistic and intellectual movement of Lettrism, which he joined temporarily.

Devised by Isidre Isou in the mid-1940s, following in the footprint of Dadism and Futurism from the early 20th century, Lettrism held the conviction that both poetry and music and painting had reached their peak.

To begin a new creative cycle, artists had to go back to the beginning and deconstruct the artistic languages. In short, they had to return to the signs, emptied of their symbolic load: return to the letters.

The exhibition is divided into four areas.

The first is based on the film L’Anticoncept, which used to be screened over a helium balloon placed before the curtain of a cinema instead of projecting it on a traditional screen.

Es en la década de los 90’s cuando empieza la transformación de Fuencarral, un proyecto al cual contribuyó el genio del arquitecto Horacio Fernández del Castillo y en el que ha sido muy importante la conversión de la calle en zona peatonal.

Poco a poco las nuevas generaciones han hecho suyo un espacio que ahora tiene como señas de identidad el atrevimiento, el dinamismo y la innovación: por derecho propio, este pedazo urbano que une la Gran Vía con Quevedo se ha erigido en un auténtico núcleo de la moda más vanguardista.

a Biblioteca del Museo de Prado, ubicada en el Casón del Buen Retiro, guarda un importante fondo antiguo que ha ido creciendo en los últimos años gracias a la adquisición de los archivos de don José María Cervelló y de la familia Daza-Madrazo. Este preciado tesoro, formado por cuarenta libros y manuscritos que datan desde el 1500 hasta el1750, estará acompañado por ocho cuadros del Museo (Tiziano, El Greco y Velásquez, entre otros) que revelarán las correspondencias existentes entre el fondo bibliográfico y esta colección pictórica.

La exposición se articula en tres apartados. El primero, Bibliotheca artis, muestra los referentes de la bibliografía europea, desde los tratados capitales del renacimiento (Alberti, Leonardo, Durero) hasta las obras fundamentales del siglo de oro español, representado en este caso por Pacheco, Carducho, García Hidalgo y Palomino. El Segundo, denominado Biblioteca Architecturae, se dedica a los trata-

dos de arquitectura concebidos como una tipología definida dentro del libro de arte y recoge desde ediciones tempranas de Vitruvio hasta los grandes tratados del renacimiento italiano (Palladio, Serlio, Vignola) y europeo (Delorme, Dieteterlin).

Por último, el apartado Bibliotheca imaginis se centra en el papel de los libros como instrumento de trabajo y fuente de inspiración de los artistas. Flash Flash is the offspring of the irreverence and nonconformity of the gauche divine (divine Left), a cultural movement that sprang up in Barcelona in the late 1960s. D

etrás del nombre Masriera, una acreditada y más que centenaria marca del mundo de la joyería catalana e internacional, se esconde toda una historia que aglutina varias generaciones de artistas, estrechamente relacionadas con Barcelona.

Cuando la ciudad condal entraba en la escena internacional gracias a la organización de la Exposición Universal del 1888, considerada hoy el preámbulo del Modernismo, Masriera ganaba una medalla de oro de la exposición y el denominado Premio Único.

Sendos galardones fueron atorgados por la Asociación de Joyería y Platería de la ciudad, quienes reconocían su primacía como joyeros creadores. Pero el triunfo de Masriera llegaría poco después de la mano de la estética Art Nouveau, el estilo del 1900, muy presente en el Modernismo catalán.

Lluís Masriera (1872-1958), el artista creador que dirigió la firma durante la etapa del modernismo y el déco, concibió la joya como una obra de arte. Él fue el introductor y estandarte de la joyería Art Nouveau en Barcelona y uno de sus máximos representantes internacionales.

La característica iconografía simbolista de dicho estilo -hadas, libélulas, flores, ninfas, mariposas…- se convirtió en la protagonista de sus joyas, dotadas de mucho color.

que-à-jour o “finestrats”, una aportación propia del autor que hoy es reconocida internacionalmente y que se ha erigido en una referencia mundial de la joyería contemporánea.

Con la colaboración de algunos de los escultores y orfebres modernistas más destacados de la época -Alexandre de Riquer, Eusebi Arnau, Josep Llimona o Pau Gargallo- realizó una gran cantidad de piezas únicas, pero también muchas otras de seriadas gracias a un preciso sistema de moldes y troqueles diseñado por él mismo. De igual forma, destacó en el campo de la orfebrería doméstica -juegos de café, cubertería, jarrones…- y también litúrgica.

Posteriormente, superado el Modernismo, Masriera se adentra en los nuevos caminos artísticos del Art Déco.

En el año 1915, los Masriera constituyeron una sociedad con Joaquín Carreras Nolla, miembro también de una saga de joyeros barceloneses nacida en el 1766.

La nueva sociedad, denominada Masriera y Carreras, estuvo presente en la Exposición de Artes Decorativas e Industriales Modernas de París del año 1925.

Mostró unas joyas geométricas esmaltadas y unas piezas de orfebrería, tal y como lo hizo en la Exposición Internacional de Barcelona del 1929, obteniendo premios importantes en ambas exhibiciones.

Más tarde, entre 1969 y 1985, el reputado linaje de joyeros barceloneses Bagués Joiers (nacida en 1917), adquiere la sociedad Masriera y Carreras.

De este modo, se asegura la continuidad histórica de su trayectoria creativa, adoptando a partir de ese momento el nombre BaguésMasriera. Así, desde los años 90 se consolida el prestigio internacional de las creaciones Art Nouveau y Art Déco Masriera. Hoy pues, Bagués-Masriera cuenta con ya 170 años de historia.

El museo Bagués-Masriera, situado en el futuro Hotel Bagués, contará con una selección de las joyas y diseños representativos de las diferentes etapas históricas de esta larga y excepcional trayectoria.

En particular, se mostrarán las joyas modernistas de la etapa que va desde el año 1900 al 1915, que ya han sido expuestas en las salas de los más importantes y prestigiosos museos del mundo: son las joyas Masriera.

ehind the name Masriera, an accredited and almost century-old brand in the world of Catalan and international jewellery, is concealed an entire history that encompasses several generations of artists with close ties to Barcelona.

When Barcelona was joining the international scene thanks to the 1888 Universal Exposition, regarded today as the preamble of Art Nouveau, Masriera won a gold medal and the exhibition, as well as the so-called Single Prize.

These awards were granted by the city’s Association of Jewellery and Silversmithing, who recognised its primacy as jewellery creators. However, Masriera’s real triumph would come shortly thereafter thanks to the Art Nouveau aesthetic, the style of 1900, which was omnipresent in its Catalan version, Modernismo.

Lluís Masriera (1872-1958), the artist-creator who ran the company during the years of Art Nouveau and Art Decor, envisioned jewellery as a work of art.

He was the one who introduced Art Nouveau jewellery to Barcelona, and he was its standard-bearer, one of its top international representatives.

The characteristic symbolist iconography of the style – fairies, dragonflies, flowers, nymphs, butterflies – turned into the main feature of his jewellery, which was brimming with colour.

This is due to the refined plique-à-jour enamels, the author’s own unique contribution which is internationally recognised today and has become a world benchmark in contemporary jewellery.

In conjunction with some of the most prominent Art Nouveau sculptors and goldsmiths of the epoch – Alexandre de Riquer, Eusebi

Arnau, Josep Llimona and Pau Gargallo – he made a vast number of unique pieces, but others in series as well thanks to a precise system of moulds and wedges that he designed himself.

Likewise, he stood out in the field of domestic goldsmithing – coffee sets, cutlery, vases – and liturgical goods. Later, once Art Nouveau was over, Masriera ventured onto the new artistic pathways of Art Decor. In 1915, the Masriera family set up a company with Joaquín Carreras Nolla, another member of the Barcelona lineage of jewellers started back in 1766. The new company, called Masriera y Carreras, was present at the Exposition of Decorative and Industrial Arts of Paris in 1925. There it displayed geometric enamelled jewellery and gold pieces, just as it had back in the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, winning important prizes at both events.

partir del mes de julio en la sala de exposiciones temporales del Museu Egipci de Barcelona podrá visitarse la exposición “Secretos” del Museu Egipci de Barcelona, integrada por más de 120 objetos arqueológicos, fotografías y libros procedentes de la colección egipcia y de la Biblioteca de esta entidad. Una selección de obras, muchas de las cuales se presentan por primera vez al público, especialmente, las últimas adquisiciones, y otras, que “regresan” a su sede oficial después de una larga ausencia.

Junto a los objetos arqueológicos se ha dotado la muestra de una selección de imágenes fotográficas antiguas de procedencia diversa (postales estereoscópicas y láminas fotográficas del siglo XIX) presentadas e integradas en un discurso expositivo que trata sobre los orígenes del uso de la fotografía en Egipto y su desarrollo posterior. Later on, between 1969 and 1985, the reputed line of Barcelona jewellers Bagués Joiers (founded in 1917) purchased the company Masriera y Carreras. In this way, it ensured the historical continuity of its creative arc, adopting the name Bagués-Masriera from then on.

Thus, since the 1990s the international prestige of Masriera’s Art Nouveau and Art Deco creations has been on the rise.

Today, Bagués-Masriera has 170 of history under its belt.

The Bagués-Masriera Museum, housed in the future Hotel Bagués, will have a selection of representative jewellery and designs from the different stages in this long and exceptional history.

In particular, Art Nouveau jewellery from the period 1900 to 1915 will be displayed, which have already been seen in the halls of the most important and prestigious museums of the world: Masriera jewellery.

Y no es de extrañar, puesto que el casco antiguo de la capital de la región de Flandes Occidental fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO hace ahora 10 años.

Y más allá de las situaciones delirantes y desternillantes que nos regalan los dos actores protagonistas, lo mejor de la película es la identificación que el director consigue hacer entre sus personajes y las caras de una Brujas absolutamente poliédrica: su encanto, sus formas apolíneas, su pulcritud y luz, por un lado; y su desenfreno dionisiaco, su aspecto abigarradamente gótico y su oscuridad, por otro. Descubramos si la realidad supera la ficción.

LA VENECIA DEL NORTE Situada a 90 km de Bruselas, ‘Bryggia’ (término que proviene del

2000 fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Se trata sin duda de uno de los núcleos turísticos más importantes de centroeuropa, donde el estilo gótico inunda unas avenidas y paseos bañadas por el agua de los canales, que se originaron debido a una gran tormenta que ocurrió en

peatonal, puede ser un buen inicio para su visita. Entre el Markt (la Plaza Mayor) y la Plaza Burg deslumbran la Basílica de la Santa Sangre, el edificio del ayuntamiento, una escribanía renacentista, un palacio del siglo XVI y el monumento de 1887 a Jan de Breydel y Pieter Coninck, los líderes de la

revuelta popular contra los franceses de 1302.

Pero con toda seguridad, el indiscutible protagonista del centro es el Campanario.

Se ha convertido en todo un símbolo de la ciudad, por las magníficas vistas que pueden verse desde su cúpula, por su peculiar forma octogonal y su carrillón de 47 campanas. De estilo gótico y perteneciente a los siglos XIII, el campanario mide 83 metros de altura. Su ascensión: un pequeño sacrificio de 300 escalones.

Otra de las paradas obligadas de nuestro recorrido es el conjunto que forman la Plaza Burg y el Ayuntamiento.

La primera fue pieza fundamental de una gran fortaleza que llegó a tener una hectárea de superficie y que el Conde Arnulf I convirtió en un importante centro civil religioso.

Por su parte, el Ayuntamiento fue construido en estilo gótico-florido entre 1376 y 1421, siendo uno de los consistorios más antiguos de los Países Bajos. Su fachada está ornamentada con tres torrecillas de piedra arenisca adornadas con estatuas que representan los doce meses del año.

A continuación, destacaríamos la escribanía renacentista del siglo XVI, con el museo provincial, al igual que el Palacio Brugse Vrije, del siglo XVI, que en la actualidad hace las funciones de centro administrativo municipal.

Por supuesto, no podía faltar la Catedral de San Salvador, la más longeva de la ciudad (su construcción comenzó en el siglo IX) y el Templo de Nuestra Señora de Brujas. Ambos destacan por su estilo, aunque éste último, reúne en su interior una incalculable colección de obras como La ‘Virgen con el niño’ de Miguel Ángel.

We are talking about the film “In Bruges”, in which this beautiful city acts as both the setting and a

And beyond the madcap, hilarious situations taht the two lead actors treat us to, the best part of the film is the way the director manages to get his characters identify with the faces of a totally multifaceted Bruges: its charm, its refined forms, its neatness and light on the one hand, and its unbridled bacchanalia, its outrageously Gothic appearance and its darkness on the other. Let’s see whether reality outstrips fiction.

tant sedimentation during the 11th century. This is unquestionably one of the top attractions of a city which is often nicknamed the “Venice of the north”. The centre of town, which is closed off to cars, might be a good start for your tour. Between the Markt (main square) and Burg Square, the attractions include the Basilica of the Holy Blood, the Town Hall, a Renaissance Recorder’s House, a 16th century palace and the 1887 monument to Jan de Breydel and Pieter Coninck, the leaders of the popular revolt against the French in 1302. However, the clear star of the city centre is the belfry. It has become the top symbol of the city because of the wonderful views it affords, its unique octagonal shape and its carillon of 47 bells.

Gothic in style and dating from the 13th century, the belfry mea-

sures 83 metres high. To climb up to the top, there is a staircase with 300 steps. Another must-see in your route is the complex made up of Burg Square and the Town Hall.

The former was an important piece in a large fortress that at one point measured one square hectare, which Count Arnulf I turned into a major religious centre. The Town Hall, in turn, was built in an ornate Gothic style between 137 and 1421, and it is one of the oldest town halls in the Low Countries. Its facade is decorated with three small sandstone towers decorated with statues representing the 12 months of the year.

ueda dicho: Milán es la capital mundial de la moda. ¿Y ahora qué? ¿Qué más hay que decir? Son preguntas que algunos hacen retóricamente, exprimiendo al máximo la crueldad que cualquier tópico conlleva en sí mismo. Dicen de ella que es fría e industrial, pero lo cierto es que esta ciudad de casi 1.400.000 habitantes es mucho más que el epicentro de la economía italiana.

Habitualmente, a Milán se la califica, además de cómo la capital lombarda, como la capital moral del país. Por población, es la segunda ciudad de Italia; y por aspecto, cumple con todos los requisitos de exquisitez y cosmopolitanismo que se le reclaman a un destino turístico considerado top.

Milán comparte la Bolsa, los rascacielos, las boutiques y los locales más ‘in’ con museos, el Duomo, la Scala, el Castillo Sforza, los Jardines de Porta Venezia o la

LA GALERÍA VITTORIO EMANUELE Situada entre la Piazza del Duomo y la Piazza della Scala, se encuentra la preciosa Galeria Vittorio Emanuele, un centro comercial diseñado en el siglo XIX por Giuseppe Mangoni. Como mínimo, mientras degusta un fabuloso capuchino, contemplará la belleza arquitectónica del edificio, diseñado con forma de cruz y cubierto por unas espectaculares cúpulas de vidrio. muy probablemente debamos detenernos en la Scala, uno de los teatros de ópera más famosos del mundo. Ha tenido dos sedes, puesto que el primer edificio, el antiguo Teatro Ducale, quedó destruido a finales del siglo XVIII por un incendio que se produjo después de una

Santa Maria alla Scala.

Sin embargo, el destino se cebaría nuevamente con este preciado templo de la ópera, puesto que los bombardeos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial dañaron seriamente su estructura. Finalmente, fue reconstruido y reestrenado el 11 de

mayo de 1949 con un concierto memorable, dirigido por Arturo Toscanini.

EL DUOMO El Duomo di Milano es la catedral, que acapara la mayoría de los focos que se cargan con ‘energía cultural’. Tiene 157 metros de largo y puede albergar a casi 40.000 personas en su interior. Su importancia dentro de la urbe se mide, en primer lugar, por la ubicación. El plano de Milán revela que el edificio ya constituía el centro del antiguo imperio romano. De hecho, las calles circunvalan al Duomo o parten de él en forma de radio.

En 1386, el arzobispo Antonio da Saluzzo, comenzó el proyecto de la catedral, imprimiéndole un estilo rayonnant gótico tardío que recoge muchos aspectos hasta ese momento no vistos en Italia, propios de la tradición arquitectónica gótica de Bourges.

Casi cinco siglos después, de la mano de Napoleón Bonaparte, empezaron las obras de finalización del templo. Él mismo, a punto de ser coronado rey de Italia (1805), ordenó que la fachada fuera terminada. A pesar de su ímpetu, la última puerta de la catedral no fue inaugurada hasta el 1965.

MENOS GLAMOUR, MÁXIMO INTERÉS La Piazza Cardusio: el centro neurálgico de Milán. Está situada a poca distancia respecto de la Cámara de Comercio y la Bolsa de Milán. Sobretodo, vale la pena por la espectacular panorámica que desde ese punto se tiene de la ciudad, apreciándose el Duomo y la fachada del Castillo Sforzesco.

Y esta es precisamente la próxima parada del itinerario que estamos trazando. Esencia del renacentismo, el castillo fue construido en el siglo XV por orden de la familia Sforza.

A lo largo de su historia, ha sufrido varias transformaciones que remite al uso del mismo. Fue residencia principal de Ludovico de Moro, por ejemplo, quien llamó a los artistas más importantes de la época para transformar la roca en una elegante corte.

Hoy, la esplendorosa fortaleza de los Sforza, dominada por la torre de Filarete, es la sede de varias instituciones culturales y de tres museos muy concurridos.

El más popular es el Museo de Arte histórico, conocido por albergar la última creación de Miguel Ángel, comprada por el museo en 1958. Se trata de la inacabada Pietà Rondanini, una bella imagen en la que la Virgen acuna el cuerpo de Cristo.

Los otros dos museos son el de Artes Aplicadas, donde se exponen

obras de hierro forjado, cerámicas y marfil; y el Museo Arqueológico.

EL LAGO COMO Después de una intensa jornada en la urbe, toca desconectar y entrar en contacto con la naturaleza. Desde Milán, la mejor opción para hacerlo es dirigirse hasta el oasis por excelencia de la región de Lombardía: el Lago de Como.

Está situado entre las provincias de Lecho y Como y tiene una extensión de 145 km2.

Se encuentra rodeado por los Alpes Italianos, lo cual convierte el entorno en un paraje natural de belleza majestuosa y en un destino obligatorio para los turistas.

Una vez se llega al lago, lo más recomendable es hacer un paseo en barca o bien alquilar un coche para bordearlo.

Esta segunda opción es muy recomendable si lo que quiere es disfrutar de las aldeas de cuento de hadas que envuelven las apacibles aguas del pantano. Por ejemplo: Bellagio, contiene los preciosos jardines de la Villa Melzi.

It spans the provinces of Lecho and Como and measures 145 km2. It is nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, which turns it into a natural spot of majestic beauty and a must-see for tourists.

Once you reach the lake, your best bet is to take a boat ride or rent a car to drive around it. This second option is highly recommended if you want to enjoy the fairytale villages that surround the tranquil waters of the lake. One of the most popular is the Bellagia, which has the precious gardens of the Villa Melzi.

THE VITTORIO EMANUELE GALLERY Tucked in between and Piazza della Scala is the precious Vittorio Emanuele Gallery, a shopping centre designed in the 19th century by Giuseppe Mangoni. There you can find an extensive range of shops (many of them internationally known), bookstores and outstanding cafes.
