ANNUAL NEWSLETTER Message From The Department 2017-2018 Welcome to the 2017-2018 edition of our newsletter! This was a very productive year, and we are excited to share some of the highlights in this newsletter. The department continues to be an exciting and vibrant place to learn, teach, and serve. We have adopted a new mission statement for the department: “To prepare students as agents of social change.� This statement captures the essence of what we do and what we aspire our Sociology and CDS majors to become. It also reflects our commitment to promoting innovative teaching, engaging research, and community service. As this newsletter shows, our programs provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills by engaging in learning projects and opportunities outside of the classroom. We hope that you enjoy reading more about our students and staff in this newsletter. You will also learn about two notable recent alumni, Dena Russell and Jeremy Walter, who currently occupy leadership positions and are agents of social change!

DEPARTMENTAL AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIP

Shelby Fairchild (CDS Major) received the 2018 Outstanding Senior Award for her accomplishments during her years at ESU.

Lee Taylor (Sociology Major) was the recipient of The Jack and Mary Melhorn Family Scholarship for her academic accomplishments.

Alyssa Humphries (Sociology Major) received the 2018 Distinguished Sociology Major Award for her commitment to social justice.

MIDWEST SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIETY MEETING Dr. Shelly Rowley and four students attended the 2018 Midwest Sociological Society Meeting in Minneapolis, MN. This year's theme was "Sociology and the Public's Health." Students pictured are (L-R): Dillon Reichert, Shelby Fairchild, Cherie Crisp, and Emily Velazquez. As a member of the MSS Social Action Committee, Dr. Rowley helped in conducting a tour and a site evaluation of the Family Tree Clinic; a community clinic that helps people who would otherwise not have access to health care.

CDS MAJOR RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS SERVICE AWARD

Cherie Crisp (CDS Major) received the President's Volunteer Service Award (Gold) for her lifetime commitment to volunteering. Congratulations!

YOGA AS A TOOL FOR SOCIAL CHANGE Thank you to McKenzie Steele (Sociology Major), McKenna Davis CDS Major), and Annie Rockley (Sociology Major) for organizing a yoga class for the campus community.

The group discussed the potential benefits of yoga for behavior modification among children and young adults. The instructors were Kelsey Camien and Erin Blocker.

UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANTS PROVIDE VALUABLE SERVICE

Our undergraduate teaching assistantship program has been very successful. Sociology majors, Alyssa Humphries and Cole Bettenbrock assisted Dr. Rowley and Dr. Westfall, respectively, in teaching their introductory courses. Alyssa has accepted a position to be a Case Manager for children at South Central Mental Health Community Center in Andover starting in May 2018. Cole has been accepted to the sociology masters’ program at Kansas State University! Congratulations!

WRONGFUL CONVICTION Shelby Fairchild (CDS Major) organized a presentation by Floyd Bledsoe for students and the Emporia community.

Floyd Bledsoe was wrongfully convicted in 2000 of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated indecent liberties in the shooting death of his 14-year-old sister-in-law. Bledsoe spoke to students and staff about his legal case and about life in prison.

STUDENTS GO TO JAIL Madison Galliano (Sociology Major) coordinated a tour of the Lyon County jail for sociology and CDS students.

The tour gave students a firsthand look at what happens in jail.

PROBATIONERS VISIT CAMPUS Below, Savannah Russell (Sociology Major) conducted a panel discussion composed of five probationers who shared their experiences and their personal stories with our students.

STUDENTS DIG INTO THE PAST IN COUNCIL GROVE, KANSAS Our Department continues its partnership with the Kansas Historical Society to introduce students to archeological field work. This summer the Kansas Archeology Training Program investigated the Kaw Mission State Historic Site in Council Grove. The Kaw Mission served as a school for boys in the Kaw or Kansa tribe between 1851 and 1854. The following students attended the event: Tori Compton (Sociology Major), Brandon Gaines (Undeclared), Kristin Rindom (MS Forensic Science), Madeline Griem (History Major). STUDENTS GET A UNIQUE LOOK INTO POLICE OFFICER TRAINING Shelby Fairchild (CDS Major) and John De La Luz (Sociology minor) attended the Kansas Collegiate Law Enforcement Academy. The Collegiate Law program offers college students an exciting and unique view into what it takes to become a law enforcement officer. Thank you to ESU Officer Schumann for transporting the students to the Salina Highway Patrol Training Center, and the ESU Foundation for their financial support!

FROM CLASS TO PRISON

A group of students toured the Topeka Correctional Facility for Women. During their visit, students interacted with correctional officers and prisoners. Officer Tipton Chase described the challenges and opportunies of working with offenders.

THE PROCESS OF INVESTIGATING ARSON Students in Dr. Zuber-Chall’s Criminal Investigation class had an opportunity to learn about arson investigation when the Emporia Fire Marshall, who first taught the students about arson fires using powerpoint slides, illustrated his point by inviting them to see a fire training exercise as well as showing them how his trained fire dog can detect arson fires. This was just one of the many interactions that the students had with law enforcement personnel during the academic year.

SERVING LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY Patrice Haggerty (Sociology Major) (L) spent many hours interning and working at the Emporia SOS Office. She actively participated in the SOS project “Stand With A Survivor” which used a mannequin to bring awareness of SOS services to the community. Sociology majors Abigaile Weiser ( C ) and Sakeena Agha ( R ) prepared sanitary pads for the Uganda Field Project, directed

by Dr. Westfall and Ranae Wyatt. Abigaile and Sakeena traveled to Uganda this Summer as part of Dr. Westfall’s Uganda Summer project.

Faculty News

Welcome to Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez Carey!

Dr. Carey is very excited to join the department! She loves teaching and interacting with students. Her teaching and research interests include corrections, women and crime, women’s incarceration, gender, families, and qualitative methods. Her current research project includes studying women who were pregnant in prison. Prior to joining the department, she taught at the University of Missouri, where she earned her master’s and Ph.D. in Sociology. She earned her bachelor’s in Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice from Wichita State University. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her husband and daughter. She is originally from Hutchinson, so she’s excited to be back in her home state.

Dr. Evandro Camara (Professor of Sociology) received the 2018 College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Excellence in Scholarship and Creativity Award. He is about to begin his Fall sabbatical to complete a book which deals with the social phenomenology of race and ethnic relations. Congratulations!

Congratulations to Dr. Rochelle Rowley who earned tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor!

She finalized data collection on her study of the lived experiences of people who identify in the LGBT+ community under the current government administration, completed a study on social justice messages in popular music, and developed new courses Introduction to LGBT+ Studies, taught in the Spring 2018, and Intersectionality and Identities to be taught in Spring 2019. During the 2018-19 academic year she will expand her research with other marginalized populations and their experiences under the current government administration, continue her work on developing a master’s program for the department, perform moderator duties for the Dean’s Advisory Council, and work with the student theater club to create training videos for faculty and staff about sexual harassment and sexual assault.

This Summer, Dr. Obermeyer, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Delaware Tribe's Historic Preservation Office on the ESU campus met with Dean Brent Thomas and the Delaware Tribe's Tribal Manager Joe Exendine and Cultural Resources Director Curtis Zunigha to discuss ways of strengthening our partnership with the Delaware Tribe of Indians. Some of the topics that were discussed included offering tribal programs and classes for ESU students in language and culture, recruitment efforts as well the potential for developing a Delaware studies program at ESU. Welcome to Jan Todd! She is a Ph.D. Candidate in Sociology at K-State. She enjoys working with students as they hone their skills as observers of society. Currently, she is working on her dissertation entitled “Holy Reception: How Foreign Born Pastors Serving Mostly White Congregations are Being Received to Lead in The Great Plains.” Todd’s emphasis is in International Development and Sociological Theory. She focuses on the impact of religious globalization on American social life and attitudes concerning immigration. This is important to her as she is an Ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church and has served churches in Kansas for 20 years. Todd is married to Mitch Todd, also a pastor, who serves Mulvane United Methodist Church.

Dr. David Westfall and Dr. Gary Wyatt, Honors College, continued their support of the Uganda Summer Field Project. This year’s participants included sociology majors Abigaile Weiser, Sakeena Agha, and Katelynn Donnelly. 2018 AKD INITIATION BANQUET The Alpha Kappa Delta Initiation banquet was held on April 16, 2018 at the Memorial Union. In attendance were new initiates, families and friends, faculty, staff, and guests of honors. The keynote speaker was Brittany Moore (Left), KSNT News morning anchor. and reports on a variety of beats, including health, consumer and human interest stories. She volunteers her time with various non-profit organizations in the Topeka area, and she is an advocate for children with special needs. Brittany enjoys working with people in the community and is honored to tell their stories. The theme of her talk was advocacy as a tool for social change. Join us on Facebook!

NOTABLE RECENT ALUMNI Dena Russell graduated Cum Laude in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and a minor in Spanish. Currently, Dena Russell serves as the director of the County Court Appointed Special Advocate of the Flint Hills program (CASA of the Flint Hills).

Jeremy Walter graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Crime & Delinquency Studies.

He attended Baylor Law School and graduated Magna Cum Laude and second in his graduating class. He maintains a practice in general commercial litigation with Baker Botts L.L.P. in Houston, TX.
