DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY, ANTHROPOLOGY, AND CRIME AND DELINQUENCY STUDIES September 2016
Greetings to All! The 2015-2016 academic year was a very successful year for the department! As you read this newsletter, you will notice that our programs continue to be vibrant and our faculty members continue to be committed to teaching, research, and service. This year the faculty worked tirelessly, hiring a new tenure-track faculty member, designing the new capstone course required for our majors, and exploring areas in need of improvement in our programs. Moreover, the faculty continued its effort to develop a plan to offer a masters’ degree to satisfy the increasing demand for social service professionals in Kansas and across the United States. We partnered with the Honors Program, directed by Dr. Gary Wyatt, to remodel two of our classrooms to facilitate the use of technology in our courses. We continued the search for internship opportunities for our majors and minors, and several students attended the Kansas Collegiate Law Enforcement Academy as well as the Johnson County Forensic Anthropology Workshop. In addition, the department sponsored a selfdefense workshop for the entire campus and supported an experimental project which allowed a qualified undergraduate student to serve as a teaching assistant for Introduction to Sociology and Intimate Relations courses! We want to express our gratitude to our donors who continue to support our students and programs. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Holly Pottle, (Ph.D. Candidate, Sociology and Criminology, Texas Woman University) who will become part of our department starting this Fall. If you are an alum of our department or a current student, please share your success stories with us!
