Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Crime & Delinquency Studies THE SUSAN B. ANTHONY SCHOLARSHIP

Victoria Goetzinger (SOC Major), 2018-19 winner of the Susan B. Anthony Scholarship, being presented the scholarship by President Garrett, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. David Cordle, and the 2017-18 recipient of the scholarship, Sakeena Agha (SOC Major). The Healthy Relationship & Interpersonal Violence Education (THRIVE) Program offers the Susan B. Anthony Scholarship annually. The scholarship is approximately $1,200 and is awarded in spring semester to the Emporia State student (male or female) who best satisfies the following requirements: has demonstrated the greatest or most beneficial input to the growth and education of women on the Emporia State University campus; and who has demonstrated excellence in scholarship based on grade point average and academic honors.

Collaborations and Partnerships Deconstructing Society

Deconstructing Society Grant The department received a grant to organize a Sociology and CDS camp, Deconstructing Society, for high school students from the Emporia High School.

The purpose of the camp is to enhance students’ critical thinking skills. They will engage in the following activities:       

CDS-Forensic Science Partnership Our department has partnered with the Forensic Science Program to hire Officer Russell Klumpp to teach criminal justice and forensic science courses. Officer Klumpp started with the Topeka Police Department 21 years ago. He is also a member of the Adult Community Corrections Advisory Board and the NE Kansas Incident Management Team for disaster response.

Community Engagement Dr. Rowley provided CEU training on culturally competent care for transgender patients to approximately 90 medical professionals, primarily nurses, at Newman Hospital in four separate sessions June 5th and 6th.

Collaborations and Partnerships

We have signed a 2+2 articulation agreement with Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kansas to make it easier for NC students to transfer into our CDS program.

We will start offering college credit for education, training, and skills acquired while in the military that relate to careers in the criminal justice field.

Knowledge Sharing

Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez Carey and Dr. Alfredo Montalvo presented “Mass Incarceration in the United States: Gender, Race, Incarcerated Mothers and their Children” to staff at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center in Topeka, as part of their staff training for their Play Free program initiative. The Play Free program is a play-based education and exploration program that partners with the Topeka Correctional Facility to provide rich play experiences for children with an incarcerated mother or grandmother.

Faculty, Students, and Community Leaders Author and Researcher Speaks to Students Rachel McCarthy James, co-author of The Man from the Train: The Solving of a CenturyOld Serial Killer Mystery discussed her research with Sociology and CDS majors.

Rachel answered students’ question about her book and about conducting research on serial killers. After extensive archival research, analysis of court transcripts, and public records, Rachel and her father, Bill James, discovered the true identity of a serial killer, Paul Mueller, who struck again and again between 1897 and 1912 resulting in the killing of dozens of people. The presentation was organized by Dr. ZuberChall and the Criminal Justice Organization (pictured below).

Faculty, Students, and Community Leaders From Prison to City Mayor

Above, Jermaine Wilson, Leavenworth Mayor, spoke to a group of students about his life behind bars in the Lansing Correctional Facility. His election as city mayor came after 12 years after he went to prison on drug charges. His record was expunged in 2015. The event was organized by Marisa Carter (SOC Major) and Aletra Crawford (CDS Major). Below, students in Dr. Zuber-Chall’s class visited the Emporia Police Department to learn first-hand how the local police department connects with the community and about the day-to-day operations of the department.

Faculty, Students, and Community Leaders Homecoming Parade: Giving Back to the Community Emporia State University celebrated its 2018 Homecoming Parade Saturday, October, 20. The Homecoming Parade is a time to celebrate being a proud Hornet and to show our community spirit.

Alpha Kappa Delta Social Worker and Photographer Speaks About Trauma and Art

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) celebrated its 2019 Initiation Banquet on April 23rd. This year’s keynote speaker was Taumi Boyce from SOS. Taumi Boyce has found two passions that she has combined into one. With a Bachelors in Social Work and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Design, she is creating awareness of social problems through her art. After graduating with her BSW, Taumi worked as a Foster Care Worker with TFI Family Services, and later became the community relations officer for SOS; where she was able to incorporate her love for photography into her social service career.

Taumi owns a photography company named “Taumi Fine Art Photography + Design.” The new AKD cohort of initiates includes: Marjorie Allen, Clark Besthorn, Marisa Carter, Briannea Charbonneau, Erica Freeman, Victoria Goetzinger, Esther Jost, Haley Kingsley, Mayra Murillo Espinoza, Zaina Rodriguez, Evelyn Simmons, and Ericka Wolfelt.

Becoming Global Leaders

Uganda-ESU Partnership The Uganda Project is coordinated by Drs. David Westfall and Gary Wyatt. The following students participated in this year’s field project: Taylor Lee, Mayra Murillo Espinoza, Joselyn Centeno, Tori Compton, Kira Ford, Emma Boyd, Delaney Dold, and Anna Baylon. This faculty-led study abroad program is a 30 day trip to Uganda. The first half of the trip is spent in Nyakalengija, an impoverished community in the Rwenzori mountains. While there students assist with the day-today operations of the Rwenzori Child Care Initiative Organization. The second half of the trip students live near one of the largest slums in Kampala, Uganda, where they assist with the day-today operations of Edukey Gender Support Organization. Edukey is a Non-Profit that assists vulnerable children, unprivileged youth, and women. Students draw upon and apply all of their academic and interpersonal skills as the range of tasks is immense, and changes daily. Students may be asked to counsel orphans, paint, assist with financials, teach foundation courses, visit and present information in schools, help build the capacity of the organizations, work in the garden, gather water, fund raise, organize events, or simply sit and read to children. Students are introduced to various groups in the most ethnolinguistically diverse country in the world. By the end of this high impact, service-learning experience, students have a firm grasp and deeper understanding of the impacts of extreme poverty, non-profit work, and international development.

Examining Artifacts

Kansas Archeology Training Program Field School This year, three students enrolled in the program through ESU. KSHS Archeologist Nikki Klarmann served as principal investigator for the project June 1-16, during which 196 participants contributed 7,451.5 hours of labor. Excavations focused on exploring day-to-day life of the ancestral Wichita or Great Bend aspect inhabitants, who lived at the site between 1400 to 1700 CE. A summary of excavations is being prepared by KSHS Archeologists.

Crime Scene Investigation Topeka Police Officers Major Darin Scott (Left) and Major Russ Klump (Right) visited Dr. Susan ZuberChall’s criminal investigation class to discuss the complexities involved in solving criminal cases. They also provided ideas on how to improve a mock crime scene created by the students.

Exploring Meaning Native American Heritage Month Event

On Thursday November 29, Delaware Tribe Cultural Director, Curtis Zunigha, presented an experiential program on the history, language and culture of the Lenape (a.k.a. Delaware Indians) at the Memorial Union. Mr. Zunigha (pictured above) discussed the historic migration of his people from their origins in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to their current home in Oklahoma. He presented Delaware Indian culture through language, songs, traditional instruments, and social dances. The Delaware Tribe had a reservation in East Central Kansas from 1830-1866. The event was organized by Dr. Brice Obermeyer.

In Their Own Words Students Learn From Probationers and Prisoners

Above, students learned from a group of probationers about what they have done to overcome their drug addiction, improve themselves, and stay clean and sober. The panelists were (L-R): Jennifer Walburn, Valerie Leon, Les Howe, Anna Titus, and Rodney Shepherd. The panel was organized by Bobbie Jo Leighty and Victoria Robinson with the assistance of Probation Officer, Brad Douglas. Below, a group of students toured the Topeka Correctional Facilty, the only female prison in Kansas. Students had an opportunity to meet with a group of inmates who are serving life-sentences to talk about their crimes and their prison experience. Pictured below are (R-L), Cassandra Ortiz, Katelyn Christensen, Mazie Herzog, Hailey Kingsley, and Aleister Jones. The tour guides were Mark Hopkins and Desmond Tipton.
