FIERCE IN THE CITY FIERCE IN THE CITY combined fashion, live music, and shopping straight from the runway in Denver. It was produced by Denver-based Salwa Owens, who was the featured designer showing four of her collections, some of which were complemented by selections from A Tsagas Furs and Leather. The models were escorted by gentlemen dressed by Zerry’s Clothier & Rentals. Fierce in the City was emceed by Vincent Powell, one of the top 20 finalists from American Idol 2013. Other musical performers during the fashion show included American Idol contestant Devan Blake Jones, International opera vocalist Marlen Nahhas, and pop artist Dorian Phaero. Guests enjoyed the sounds of the female pop rock duo Steady Rush while perusing looks from the runway and more at pop-up shops after the fashion show and in the Stritch On the Run (now “Whorl on Wheels”) fashion truck. The red carpet for the event was provided by FLOR. Salwa Owens showed her collections at Santa Fe and San Diego Fashion Weeks, as well as the Americas Mart in Atlanta. She has a ready-to-wear line produced in Los Angeles, a second line made in Colorado, an evening gown line 100% hand-made in India, and an online boutique that carries clothing, jewelry, belts, hats, and sweaters. She has just made her Spring/Summer 2015 collection available through her website, www.SalwaOwens.com. Her clothing and accessories can also be purchased at select boutiques in Denver.

A little on "Empowering Women Through Fashion & Beauty." It was inspired by my business mission statement, which is "to empower women through the joy of fashion." When I first started my business, all I had the time and resources to do was to make scarves and blog. So I started a fashion blog where I gave fellow stay-at-home moms fashion makeovers. I got to see firsthand the transformation in a woman's confidence and how she exudes joy when she feels good about how she is put together on the outside. From then on, I decided to build my business with that mission statement in mind. For my event, I wanted to add some beauty treats, to really pamper and empower women with all of their favorite things: fashion, makeovers, manicures, and massages, and musical entertainment! The first fashion show, showcased my Signature Resort Collection, which is available at www.SalwaOwens.com and select boutiques.

The second fashion show showcased items from my "SO Fierce Boutique" and was a mini collection of hand embellished tunics and cocktail dresses. Some of those items are already on my website available for purchase, and others are coming soon, but guests at the event were given an exclusive first sneak-peek. The third fashion show showcased accessories from my "SO Fierce Boutique." Same as above, some of these items are up on my website and some will be listed in the next week, but guests got the first sneak-peek and chance to buy.

Whorl

The Ultimate Feature Written by: Kim Clerkley

Recently, DenVhere Magazine asked Colorado native Megan Timlin, owner of Whorl, how she became interested in fashion. Megan recalls during her senior year in high school, she decided she wanted to try something different from playing basketball. Upon acting on her decision to leave the basketball team, she suddenly had more time on her hands and developed a passion for styling her own outfits. This led her to pursue a degree in Fashion Merchandising. Megan initially attended F.I.D.M. before transferring to Marist College in New York. She completed her schooling at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. At CSU, Megan really got involved in fashion and felt a need to connect with the Denver fashion community.

Following her stints at Fashion Denver and Denver’s First Class Fashionista, Megan ventured to London for an ethical and sustainable fashion conference. While in London, Megan visited Stella McCartney’s showroom, located between the sights of London, a city deeply rooted in fashion and amazing designers. Megan opened Whorl with the encouragement from her father who persuaded her to become an entrepreneur. Through the encouragement and advice from her family and friends, Megan set out to open a boutique that incorporated only good. The vision of the boutique would be to carry local Denver fashion designers and artists who are equally working to change the world. Through the work of everyone involved, the store was creating an impression, or a fingerprint, on the world and the local Denver community. Whorl became the new name!

Michael Vasseur, the Director of Operations at Whorl says it best: “Whorl is a place where everyone is involved and a place where everyone wants to shop. We have an inclusive environment, everyone’s input is welcomed and applied. We like to bring good things to great people; everything we do from greeting customers to the garments we feature within the store is authentically personalized.”

Landmine Designs is a jewelry line featured within the store that focuses on social change. Landmine gives humane jobs to women in developing countries that otherwise would be working in dangerous environments. Through the purchase of a Landmine work of art, you help better the life of someone in a foreign country. Another line carried within the store is Save My Bag.The Save My Bag handbag collection creates environmentally friendly, washable machine-friendly handbags that cut down on the consumption and pollution of plastic bags. Jess Quinn is another designer featured at Whorl. Quinn’s line, Good hYOUman, is a line that promotes positive energy with shirts that have ‘feel-good’ messages like, “Give the world your best” and “Be the best you.” AILA, which is also carried at Whorl, is a nail polish line that is free of toxins and any act of animal cruelty.

The majority of items within the store are connected to doing good, either through empowering disadvantaged individuals or being a direct change within the manufacturing process to combat social and environmental issues within the world. Whorl features several more designers, including Stephanie Owens and Maggie Burns, whose beautiful gown graces the cover of this issue. At the heart of Whorl is a team of individuals and artists who set out to be do good in life. By coming to Whorl, you will be leaving a fingerprint within an amazing Denver boutique.

Whorl is located at 3326 Tejon Street, Denver, CO 80211. For more information, visit www.whorlshop.com

Tea & Talk with

Fashionistas

On a beautiful Saturday morning, an elegantly appointed room with lavish trim and ornamentation had been carefully prepared for the arrival of like-minded Denver socialites for an afternoon of pleasant conversation and sartorial inspiration at the Briarwood Inn located in Golden, Colorado. Tea and Talk With Fashionistas presented its inaugural event to the delights of the adventurous participants hosted by Sinath Jerome of Regal Rowe, a fashion designer from Highlands Ranch, Colorado. The invitation requested that ladies don their most elegant spring social attire, which was left up to their own creative interpretations. Some wore relaxed, modern designs of soft cotton blends, and illuminated them with broadbrimmed tea hats and fascinators bedazzled with vibrant jewels and sparkling metallics. Emily Geisler designed an original dress with funky, modeled white and beige tones covered with sheer distressed web lace and topped with a pink hat trimmed with silk flowers and ostrich feathers. Others presented more classic designs with lace on linens amid floral embellishments crowned with hats reminiscent of times long past. Masha Pichugina wore a rural Victorian style with a lace-up fitted bodice and elbow length lace cuffs atop a layered lace skirt. Sinath Jerome designed an ostentatious, authentic Victorian era cosmopolitan gown with scalloped lace neckline over soft-pink bodice and narrow pale pink ribbon arrayed in a diamond pattern down the skirt, which was finished with a double lace cuff. Sinath topped her ensemble with her own custom millinery creation with giant silk flower petals garnished by ostrich feathers and pink netting. Dana Michele DeRoin presented the most unique top hat conveying a floral patterned teacup and saucer with a wisp of organza steam rising. Seventy-two gorgeous, long-stem roses were the centerpiece of three large tables draped in fine linen and topped with ornate china and silver. The treats rested upon a Tower of London presentation and included freshly baked scones, savories, and sweets. Champagne was served chilled, and of course, there were seven loose tea selections to choose from for those who preferred it. For some, tea is an interlude away from the complexities and bustle of modern life. For others, it is a journey into a different time and place through which discoveries are made and friendships collected. With every sip of tea, we are reminded of each step of our journey through life. From each breath that follows, we embrace the moment to reflect upon the past, grateful for the present, and anticipating the next sip, which promises only a fleeting glimpse into the future.

Inspirational Lace!

Editor-In-Chief: Georgez Dabit Photography: Hannah Whittaker

There are many things that inspire me. Many times, friends and family are all it takes to propel me to do something. The Lace Issue is one of those inspirations. I am so grateful for the many people that have stepped into my life that have pushed me to create and design such a wonderful fashion avenue not just for many out there in Denver but for myself as well. This issue has to be one of my favorites (all the issues are, of course, but this issue has so much soul) thus far because of what it means and how it brought many of my friends and family together. The Lace Issue was mainly inspired by my dear friend Amanda Wines, who is featured on page 36. Amanda loves lace; she lives for it! When she asked me, "Would you ever do a lace issue?" It took me a while to think about how the DenVhere crew and myself could make lace fashionable without being aimed towards lingerie and, sure enough, we found a way! We finally got around to the idea of lace and made it happen in this issue! Not only was Amanda featured, but I had some more of my friends and an important family member featured as well.

Maurie Mickey, who is our main cover and featured model this issue, has inspired me in all ways of my life. She’s not only a friend, but also someone I can call a role model for those of us trying to find ourselves in life. When picking a model for the cover, she was an easy choice.

On page 40, my sister, Alexa is featured for the first time ever, wearing a light teal lace dress that she wore to prom. I am so proud of her for how wonderful her pictures came out, since I also did the photography for her and Amanda. I am so happy that this issue is finally out for the world to see, as many amazing people worked on it as well as being featured in it!
