Sister, Sister

Meet Melanie “I fell in love with photography

when I realized it’s a way of communicating feelings, character, and confidence without having to say a single word. I am the one who takes the photograph, but you are the one who makes it. Photography isn’t my only passion, but I have a great love for helping others become their best selves. I also offer private Yoga lessons, Reiki energy healing, and Health and Wellness Coaching. If interested in more details, please follow me on Instagram. See my ad on page 30!”

Meet Stephanie “G

ender is a concept that was created by humans to place people into a category. Masculinity was created to describe the characteristics of a person whose sex is labeled male at birth. These outdated concepts have created an environment that breeds toxic masculinity. As a person who identifies as female, and someone who has had the opportunity to spend time in twenty-two countries around the world, I have found the U.S. to have some of the most prevalent negative impacts of toxic masculinity. From a young age, men are taught what it is to “be a man”, and the pressure put on them to live up to a certain standard of “manliness” is setting a bar that forces men to an uncomfortable level of conformity. If we live in a country where we have the freedom to express our true selves, why do we continue to push men into this box of toxic masculinity? I challenge myself, and I challenge you, to call out toxic masculinity. It may seem like a small step towards fixing a colossal societal problem but even the smallest of actions can create a domino effect towards a larger change.”

Toxic Men, Therapy, & My Hair Editor-In-Chief: Georgez Dabit Photography: Melanie Cannata

W

elcome to 2022, readers. I can truthfully say that so many things have changed, but much has stayed the same. Sadly, like 2019, 2020, and 2021, we are still living in “COVIDtimes;” as if our lives are already not hard enough with the pressures of the world telling us who to be or not be. This issue was exciting because it featured men’s fashion, but it was a rough one. Well, 2021 was a rough year, for me at least. I had to make an extremely hard decision to remove many toxic people (mainly men) from my life. It’s sad that we are sometimes blinded by people, especially the ones we love. If I could look back and tell myself one thing, I’d say, “do not be so open with people, Georgez.” When you’re too nice, you get stepped on. I’ve learned this many times, but for some odd reason, I always give people the benefit of the doubt. Once I removed the toxicity from my life, I started to breathe again. Being a man myself, I’ve been very displeased with fellow community members – not all of course. 2021 was filled with so many lies, betrayal, and deception – many from “friends.” On the positive side, some people find Jesus, and others find therapy. Me? Well, I’ve found both. After my struggles with multiple toxic men, I decided it was time to seek therapy again. I found an amazing therapist who is helping me deal with all my issues. My focus for 2022 – boundaries! Placing boundaries with people is so healthy, even those you are close with. I recommend therapy for anyone struggling in any aspect of life. I let my hair grow out. Yes, I’ve been called “Emo” or “Posh Spice”, but I like it. I’ve had this style before, but it fits my current perspective on life. Long in the front, short in the back. For my column, I wanted a photo shoot that represented the struggles I’ve faced in 2021, which is why I decided to embrace my Middle Eastern/Greek Heritage by doing a homage photo shoot wearing a beautiful robe and elegant necklace at the Great Sand Dunes. This shoot represents struggle, beauty, fashion, passion, embracement, and most of all, forgiveness to myself. Melanie really captured the sadness and darkness of this photo shoot, yet the shimmering light that gazed upon my thigh, which for me, represents hope and change. I leave you with this. With pain, comes beauty. Beauty of course, is in the eyes of the beholder. Beauty isn’t always physical, sometimes it’s an emotional struggle waiting to let loose.

“Just a shine of light, can turn your darkest thoughts into a big city of your own mind. Don’t ever let that city sleep.” – Georgez
