Viewing Artist Information Artist information including statements and biographies are available to view through the online exhibition at dentonarts.com/soul-art-renewal.

On the website the exhibition is laid out alphabetically but artist’s last name.

Information panels are located after the image of the artwork.

You can also go directly to the individual artist’s information page by using the QR code located with each piece.

To use a QR code you will need some sort of smart device (phone or tablet) with a camera. Using your camera on the phone or an app (you can find one by searching for QR reader in the app store) hold your device over the QR image. It should scan and a pop up will come up somewhere on your device for you to select “open...”. Select that link and you will be taken to our website on your device’s website browser.

SOUL ART RENEWAL Soul Art Renewal is a multi-gallery and multi-media celebration of art and artists in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and other events in 2020-2021. The project’s aim is to focus on healing, hope, and community resilience and renewal in response to the impact the pandemic has had on the arts community.

The arts community in Denton continues to feel the impact of the COVID pandemic through losses of individual artists, community art spaces, music venues, and loss of employment and performance opportunities. As the arts community re-emerges through galleries and venues reopening we encourage everyone to take a moment and reflect on the impact of the past year on their lives and the community. We believe at GDAC that expressing our emotions and experiences through art is a way to connect with one another and with ourselves.

Our general art exhibition in the Meadows Gallery explores the individual experiences of artists that come together in a single community wide exhibition. The exhibition mirrors how all of us had individual experiences and stories in the past year but together these individual stories create our community narrative of 2020 & 2021.

In the exhibition there are artworks about struggles with mental health, shifts in relationships, shifts in self identity, and how we relate to one another. Some works handle this in a direct way of distorted self-portraits or monsters lurking in shadows others through more abstract imagery.

One piece is a thank you to medical professionals and a reminder that everyone’s experience in the pandemic was not working from home or self-isolation.

The pandemic was not the only event that has shaped our past year. Other pieces look into the protests and social changes around racial justice that swept the country in summer 2020. One piece reflects on the winter storm this past February. Our experiences around the pandemic, protests, and winter storm shape our collective story.

We created this exhibition as way to reflect as a community on the past year and a half. Showing how the artists have turned their experiences and emotions into artwork. Now as the audience we ask you to reflect on your own experience in 2020-2021.

Here are some questions to think about as you view the catalog: What places did you go? What places did you not go?

What did you create during the pandemic?

How did you keep connected with people you care about?

Did you learn anything about yourself during the pandemic?

How can we as a community recognize the things and people we lost during the past year?

How do we continue to balance public safety and individual health while coming back together?

What are our hopes and dreams for the art community moving forward?
