International Contemporary Craft Competition & Exhibition

Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition, began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. Now in its 35th year, the exhibition shows the top national and international artists as we celebrate the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media.

This year’s call for artists drew over 1,100 submissions from 15 countries around the world and 43 states. Juror Tanya Aguiñiga selected 85 works for exhibition at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center including works from 25 states and 4 countries including Canada, Finland, Mexico, and the United Kingdom in varying media including metal, glass, wood, plastic, ceramic, fiber, and mixed media.

This exhibition is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts and the City of Denton. The 35th annual Materials will be on view May 27 - August 27 at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.

Art will be on display in both the Meadows and Gough Gallery.

ABOUT THE JUROR

2022 JUROR- Tanya Aguiñiga Juror’s Statement In jurying the Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition, I thought of all we have been through, both collectively and personally during the pandemic. As artists we capture both beauty and difficulties in life, and this exhibition is a snapshot of our current times. Works chosen for inclusion speak to the isolation, societal awakening and the respite that craft materials and methodologies provide for contextual grounding around the world.

Juror’s Biography Tanya Aguiñiga was born in 1978 in San Diego, California, and raised in Tijuana, Mexico. An artist, designer, and craftsperson, Aguiñiga works with traditional craft materials like natural fibers and collaborates with other artists and activists to create sculptures, installations, performances, and community-based art projects. Drawing on her upbringing as a binational citizen, who daily crossed the border from Tijuana to San Diego for school, Aguiñiga’s work speaks of the artist’s experience of her divided identity and aspires to tell the larger and often invisible stories of the transnational community.

Georgia Leach Gough

I have struggled with knowing what to include, what to add to Georgia’s already remarkable story of accomplishments. As I shared my struggle with Georgina, I said that it is just so difficult because I love Georgia. Georgina’s immediate response was of course you do and that is why I asked you to write this!

It then occurred to me that what is missing from all of the articles is a more personal view into this extraordinary woman. Georgia exemplifies the epitome of a strong career woman as well as a woman who demonstrates a community force of action.

In a time when women often struggle in their pursuits of employment, fair wages, and so many other areas, I am struck with Georgia’s successes. As I looked at a timeline of Georgia’s accomplishments over the last 101.5 years. I thought back to an interview that Georgia gave to KERA on the occasion of her 100th birthday. She said that her recommendation to people now would be to find what you like to do, and do the very best that you can. She has a quiet touch, great manners, is brilliant, and used her personality qualities to be a force and accomplishing so much. She has spent over 101 years doing just that- from her education to her career.

I was fortunate to be her student prior to her retirement in 1974. Fast forward when she and Ray had some home repair issues, the then Dean of CVAD- Robert Milnes- sent the message to call Debbie Johnson, me, because I could help. Billie and I laugh often about those plumbing issues that brought us back together. That plumbing issue led to an integration of Georgia into my family- hooray for a leaking shower!

What is she like personally? She runs on “train time”. Her dad’s career was with the railroad. This means that she is always punctual. She has a very dry and wicked sense of humor. She loves a good practical joke. At 101.5 she still has great mental acuity.

She is thoughtful. She always sends thank you notes. She can tell stories about all of the past Presidents at UNT. She knew all of the original group of Art professors- before it was CVAD. When she and Cora Stafford started the ceramics classes Georgia tells a wonderful story about the first kiln, how she found the spot for it on campus, and what happened when she had crawled into it prior to the first firing. She shares stories about her friends from the National Crafts organization - Chihuly as a young man on the Crafts board with her, one of the Rockefeller’s she served with and stayed in their New York apartment, Mrs. Rockefeller’s Valentine’s Day card practice, Ray and Georgia’s Ocktoberfest at their mid-century contemporary home each fall , her travel stories after retirement with Ray, and more. After Ray died, she decided to move to an apartment in a retirement community. She wanted white walls, to the shock and horror of the person suggesting blues, greens, etc. I encouraged her to bring some of my personal favorites from their collection to her new apartment-notable artists that we all know.

She quietly ignored my suggestions and brought art that was most meaningful to her, that her old friends had created. She wanted to be surrounded by her old friends that are now gone- not the famous works. She has a calm and gracious demeanor in the face of situations that most would find to be very frustrating. She has a massive amount of patience. She is a wonderful listener, and pays attention to what is being said. She loves to throw her head back, laugh out loud and does so frequently. She is quietly encouraging to those in need. She is generous. She is fearless. She watches politics and what’s going on in our world with voracious attentiveness. She loves good food and eats a lot with great enjoyment while always maintaining her trim figure. She is always ready to go- “just give me 30 minutes and I will be ready”. She has suffered great hardship and loss too. She has outlived most of her friends, family and her sweet husband. As she pointed out she has survived 2 pandemics- the Spanish Flu and now Covid. She commuted to North Texas from Oklahoma City for her masters. She did her dissertation at the University of Oklahoma. Her dissertation was on art curriculum in southern colleges.

She knows all of the cities between Denton and Oklahoma City by heart and has stories to tell about them all. One of those cities smelled really bad She is great fun on a road trip. She taught my entire family to play a domino game called Mexican Train one Thanksgiving weekend and played till midnight on consecutive nights.

She would send drafts of her thesis by “train mail” for her major professor’s review.

Train mail was the most economical way to get a large packet to its destination.

She traveled a lot as a child because the family had free train passes. When she received the offer letter for the job at NT she was at a camp with her younger sibling.

Georgia was a chaperone. She and her friends had sneaked out of camp to go to town dancing. Unbeknownst to Georgia her parents were driving the offer letter to her at the camp. Imagine their surprise when they found out she had gone to town.

She has a lifelong adventurous spirit. Her dad thought that she would want to send an immediate response to the offer letter and he had gone so far as to type up an acceptance letter for her signature. She loves dogs and cats. She loves well. She makes friends easily. She never complains. She is so appreciative. In general, she made lemonade when handed lemons. Macular degeneration has not removed the twinkle from her eyes. She and Ray had a succession of Siamese cats. She and Ray gave a large amount of funds for student scholarships and their personal art collection to North Texas. She is passionate about students. She is strongly opinionated but holds her opinions close to her heart. She does not want to argue nor offend even when she doesn’t agree. She sat on my final review critique prior to graduation and offered to buy a piece of my jewelry. I had made it for my mom so I declined, but it was so exciting to me that Dr. Gough had wanted one of my designs.

She pointed out that it was much more interesting to me because she doesn’t remember that at all!

Georgia B. Gough, or Billie to family and friends, has made an enormous impact on countless lives since she began her art education, her teaching career and contributions to the community. Georgia credits her dad with inspiring her to major in art at Central State Teacher’s College in Edmond, OK. Georgia taught in a tworoom school in Lucien, Ok, and also taught elementary art in Oklahoma City, then in Denison, Texas and worked during summers on her Master’s degree in art at North Texas State University. Following completion of her master’s degree in 1946, she was hired by Cora Stafford at then North Texas State University. Georgia became the founding ceramist of the ceramics department at North Texas. She taught until her retirement in 1975.

When the Greater Denton Arts Council was struggling financially in the early 80’s Georgia was inspired to lead the organization to start a juried show of contemporary crafts. Her first idea was to have it called Hard and Soft. After much consideration the board went with Materials Hard and Soft believing it to be a less ”racy” title. Georgia believed that the reputation built through a juried show would benefit the GDAC long term enabling the center to get better funding. Knowing the importance of the jurist, but with no budget to pay, Georgia enlisted Shigeko Spear, an internationally known weaver, to be the juror for no fee, but with a reputation that made her a huge draw for the show.

Georgia represented North Texas and her profession well. She served as secretary of the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts. She represented the US on the board of the World Craft Council, traveled to many countries and was instrumental in bringing this organization to Dallas. Locally she served on the board of the GDAC, received the CARA Community Arts Recognition Award for her service to the arts, and also served in the capacity as the Exhibition Chairman of the Materials Hard and Soft for multiple years.

Through her stellar leadership, Georgia was the heart and driving force of pushing Materials Hard and Soft to encourage the growth and building a reputation for the visual arts in the metroplex. Georgia stands as an amazing role model for all young and old women of today. We owe her a huge thank you for her contributions.
