Celebrating and Reflecting on One Year of Dental Lifestyles Magazine

Dr. Glenn Vo

Dental Lifestyles Magazine

In 2022, I came up with the

idea to launch Dental Lifestyles magazine. At the time, nobody thought it was a good idea, especially launching it as a physical magazine and not exclusively a digital one. I can’t tell you how many people asked me why on earth we needed another dental magazine. In fact, I even wrote my inaugural Publisher’s Note article about exactly that, titling it, “I Know What You’re Thinking. Why on Earth Would I Need Another Dental Magazine?” It was no secret that there were many other dental magazines out there before I launched Dental Lifestyles. And while the existing magazines were very good, they were mostly focused on business or clinician improvement and highlighted people in the dental space who were already somewhat well known. Having already grown Nifty Thrifty Dentists into a thriving community of tens of thousands of dental professionals, I knew there was a deep desire to help improve the entirety of who we are as people in dentistry. And I also knew many people in the dental world weren’t already well known who could help and inspire people in the dental world. So, after searching without luck for an existing platform that served these two important

goals, I decided to create it. And level up both your personal life that’s how Dental Lifestyles and your professional life. magazine was born. I hope you’ve been inspired by what you’ve read and have used some of it to make a meaningful improvement in your life. Today, I’m even more excited about Dental Lifestyles magazine than I was just one short year ago. I’ll leave you with the same message I left you with in the inaugural Publisher’s Note: To take both our business and clinical ability to the next level, we need to level up ourselves. We need to focus on who we are, our goals, and what pulls us out of bed in the morning. Because all of this plays into the success of our dental careers, and we cannot take steps forward if we lag behind in our personal development. So, let’s continue to get inspired together!

The Nifty Awards: Celebrating the Best of the Best in Dental, as Voted by Your Peers On August 17, 2023, I announced the first annual “Nifty Awards” in the Nifty Thrifty Dentists Facebook community. The idea was simple. I wanted to honor and recognize the best professionals in dentistry. However, unlike other awards, I decided not to create a committee to determine who would be nominated. In fact, I completely recused myself from the entire nomination and voting process, even removing myself from consideration as a nominee. Instead, I let the people of dentistry decide. More specifically, I let the more than 54,000 people in the Nifty Thrifty Dentists Facebook community decide who would be recognized as the best of the best in their respective areas of focus. By making nominations and declaring winners based entirely on the votes of the Nifty Thrifty Dentists community, I achieved two goals. First, I made the process a true representation of what the entire dental industry thinks. In the Nifty Thrifty Dentists community, we have dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, other dental team members, dental vendors, dental consultants, and more. That meant people needed to have impacted more people than just dentists to be nominated. They needed everyone in the dental community to vote for them. Second, I was able to introduce nominees to dental professionals they would never have met if I didn’t have thousands of people nominating and singing the praises of their nominees. By simply creating the Nifty Awards, I was able to showcase dozens of dental executives, vendors, consultants, and other professionals in front of thousands of dental practices. We conducted two rounds of voting. The first round lasted one month and narrowed down the finalists to the top five. The second round started one month later to determine the winners from the narrowed-down lists of finalists. And today, in this edition of Dental Lifestyles magazine, I’m excited to announce the winners of the first annual Nifty Awards—as nominated and chosen by the Nifty Thrifty Dental community. Before I do, I want to thank everyone who voted and honor all the nominees. To even be nominated, you had to have positively impacted a lot of people in dentistry! And many of the races were extremely close. So, congratulations to everyone who was nominated. And, of course, congratulations to all the winners, too. Here’s to making the next year the best year in dentistry—thanks in no small part to you!

INTERVIEW WITH

Dr. Chr Vlanueva OF MB2 DENTAL

By Dr. Glenn Vo

DSO EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR

Earlier this year, I launched the first annual “Nifty Awards” to recognize and honor the best professionals in the dental industry in the Nifty Thrifty Dentists community, a group of more than 54,000 dental professionals.

By opening the award process to the Nifty Thrifty Dentists community, I designed the Nifty Awards to make sure everyone in the dental community had a voice, including dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental vendors, coaches, consultants, and others. That way, nobody could win an award by just treating the dentists well. They needed to be recognized by everything in the community to win. In this article, I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Chris Villanueva of MB2 Dental who was voted “DSO Executive of the Year” about what he and his team are doing with MB2 Dental, how he maintains a healthy personal life, what he sees in the dental community, and more. Dr. Vo: I’m so excited to interview you for Dental Lifestyles Magazine. As many people know, I’m not just a fan of MB2 Dental but I’m also a partner with you. My office was number 200. As of this writing, MB2 Dental boasts 639 offices across 39 states. Talk a little bit about MB2 Dental and how you’ve been able to grow. Dr. Villanueva: Thank you for having me. A key factor contributing to our success is our dedicated focus on selecting the right doctors. While our growth has been substantial, we don’t view our journey as a competition with others. We’re not in a race with anyone. Our approach is not about acquiring offices for the sake of numbers, but about forming meaningful partnerships. We evaluate around 3,000 private practices annually. Despite the considerable interest we receive, we selectively choose to collaborate with 100 to 120 practices that share our values and vision. The journey has been immensely rewarding, marked by substantial growth in both central services and in our numbers, of course. Dr. Vo: Talk a little bit about MB2’s place among other DSOs and what makes you different. Dr. Villanueva: I travel the country constantly talking to doctors who inevitably compare us with a lot of groups. There are plenty of startup groups out there and others that have been around for a while. We tend to find ourselves at the table with a handful of startup groups when people are considering MB2 Dental. What I try to impress upon doctors is not to assume that we’ll all have the same track record. Statistically speaking, there are over 200 private equity-backed groups in the country. In terms of how many have actually had a recapitalization event and gave an opportunity to their doctors to monetize equity, we’re talking about a very small number, maybe in the single digits. More have actually gone into receivership or haven’t been able to scale and have gone back to the bank. There is sometimes an assumption that every group will have a positive track record because of the success of other groups, but it’s just not true. I think it’s a miscalculation. We’re fortunate to have a great track record, which is uncommon, and that’s really one of the things that sets us apart.

Featured Article (cont’d) to surround yourself with individuals with the same values, whatever that may be. So, you tend to attract individuals with the same values. At MB2 Dental, we are simple people and keep things simple when it comes to evaluating practices. I always say I’d rather lose money than lose friendships. So, the exercise is really about finding the right partners with the same values we can envision working with long term. That way we’re not having to go back and redo work or backfill offices. That’s a big part of our success. And that’s a big part of why we only partner with 100 or so practices a year out of the 3,000 we look at. We maintain the discipline to not just chase profits by growing as fast as possible but instead focus on growing with the right practices.

Dr. Vo: As an owner/doctor in MB2 Dental, one thing that jumped out to me is the autonomy you give to doctors in the group. Talk about that a little. Dr. Villanueva: That goes all the way back to our genesis and why we even created MB2 Dental. For the first 10 years, MB2 Dental was really very much a mastermind group. I like to say that I was appointed student body president, not paid to lead a co-op. Frankly, we really created the infrastructure just to support our personal offices at the time so we could compete with the larger groups. The agreement amongst my partners was very simple. They had autonomy at the practice level, and that goes beyond clinical. That goes to hours of operations, paying your staff, the number of team members you have, and more. They were responsible for those decisions. I was responsible for the people in central service to support our individual offices.

The structure was not designed to be a profit center. It was never meant to make money. It was simply to make our personal practices more efficient. When private equity came in and invested in us, nothing changed philosophically speaking, either. Everyone is still in charge of their practices. That’s very important to us and builds mutual trust. I trust my partners to make decisions out in the field for their personal practices, and, in turn, they trust me to make decisions here at Central Service so we collectively can create more value for our equity and compete at the level we’re competing at.

I think we do the same things in our practices. We are presented with the same challenges. When you look at the most successful private practices, they’re the ones that stay disciplined, surround themselves with individuals with the same values, and take a long-term approach to decision making.

Dr. Vo: In your wildest dreams, to see where MB2 Dental is right now, with 639 locations full of doctors who share the same values, was that something you ever thought possible? Dr. Villanueva: No, I never would have imagined it would get to this size. As many businesses, I was very narrowly focused. I just wanted to grow and provide support for our practices. But there was an inflection point not too long ago when we hit critical mass and realized that this is a very scalable model. Now I realize that, if you look at our profession today and the number of private practices we can help and could be eligible for partnership, we’re just scratching the surface. So, although we are one of the largest groups in the U.S., I truly believe we’re still in the beginning stages. Dr. Vo: For me, one of the big reasons I joined MB2 Dental, was you. I love the fact that you can balance growing this business and being very dedicated to your immediate and extended family. How do you manage that?

Dr. Vo: Another thing that jumps out to me about MB2 Dental is the quality of the doctors in the group. How do you go about maintaining that level of quality? Dr. Villanueva: Well, I don’t think it’s a novel idea in business. I think when you build a business, whether it’s your private practice or a scale group like ours, you want DENTAL LIFESTYLES • ISSUE NO. 5 2023

MB2 Owners Retreat Dr. Villanueva: When you scale a business of this size, to maintain that balance you need to always put your family first. I make no apologies for it. I encourage my partners to do the same, too. Whenever we have these conversations about partnership, I tell my partners their loyalties are with their family, so whatever decision they make operationally, personally, or financially, family has to come first. So, I never adopted the idea that you have to have a division between work and life. Dr. Vo: The owner meetings are one of the coolest events. All the owners get together to network and grow together. How does it make you feel to be a part of something to where all these owners and all these dentists can now also elevate and level up with you? How does that make you feel to give people that opportunity? Dr. Villanueva: I’m extremely proud. It gives me purpose. I mean, building a big business that is very profitable is an accomplishment. But it’s not one that provides too much purpose. However, when you see the effect you have on people and your given talents have a positive effect on people and their families, that drives me to continue to do what I do. So those are very humbling events. Dr. Vo: Before you go, I want to know how do you feel about the state of dentistry and what advice you would give to newer dental entrepreneurs. Dr. Villanueva: I am more optimistic than ever about dentistry. Dentists have more options than ever, which in a free market system like we have, allows the best models to win out and maintain a strong industry. That’s really encouraging to me. In terms of dental entrepreneurs, I’d encourage them to be as intentional about big picture strategy and mentorship as many people are with task lists. I’m very intentional about the time that I allocate to strategy. Sometimes that’s overlooked. People develop this idea that you have to be a constantly working or hustling and allocating specific minutes of your day to do certain specific tasks. That never worked for me. Much more important to me is making sure I allocate time with my executive team and my leadership team to think about strategy, think about the headwinds and future challenges, and really think through the permutations of how we would address those. I think that’s a really big contributor to our success and I would highly recommend all entrepreneurs not overlook strategic thinking time and time for connecting with big picture advisors.

Elijah Dmd Winner of the 2023 “R.D.H. Influencer” Nifty Award

Some of us go above and be-

yond to significantly contribute to the dental industry while remaining humble and dedicated to our craft. Elijah Desmond— recipient of the 2023 Nifty Thrifty “R.D.H. Influencer” award—is one such individual. Following his nomination, I sat down to talk with him candidly about his journey, motivations, and plans for the future.

where he discovered that—by uplifting fellow dental professionals—he could contribute to their success and the betterment of the dental community.

2024: Elijah’s year for personal growth If you know Elijah, you know his heart is as big as his smile. And, the truth is, most of you already know about him. Many members of my Nifty Thrifty Dentists tribe are familiar with Elijah believes in the power him because of his popular of lifting others. Elijah has a message or two for his fellow dental professionals. Toward the end of our talk, Elijah left me with a heartfelt message for all dental professionals: “Give now, and don’t wait till your cup is full. Give authentically and without expecting anything in return.” He emphasized the importance of giving authentically, urging fellow dental professionals to give for the pure joy of making a difference in someone’s life rather than expecting to receive something in return. His advice? “Don’t give to think you’re going to get something back.” Elijah’s wisdom extended beyond the realm of altruism. He encouraged dental professionals to pursue their dreams fearlessly, acknowledging that— while it’s tempting to follow the dental crowd and replicate what other folks in our industry are doing—true innovation often lies in looking beyond one’s industry. “There’ve been no super original things that I have created in dentistry,” he said. “All the things I have created have been inspired by fun stuff I see happening outside our industry—they’re already happening in the real world. You can take almost anything and bring it into our space.”

When we can help them get through their days without pain, doesn’t it all feel worth it? For many dentists, changing lives is one of the big reasons why we got into this industry in the first place. That was a motivating factor for Elijah when he went into dental hygiene. He loved treating patients and making them feel great about their smiles. Dental influencers like Elijah make the world go round, and I’m so grateful to call him my good friend. He’s been a fantastic role model for many dental professionals, and I’ll be the first to say that he’s not slowing down soon.

Congratulations on your much-deserved award, Elijah! Think about it: How good does it feel when a patient comes up to you and thanks you for the DENTAL LIFESTYLES • ISSUE NO. 5 2023

Dr. n T’s Lumadent Winner of the 2023 “Favorite Loupe/Headlight” Nifty Award

The world of dentistry is a

hotbed of innovation, where pioneering minds continuously push boundaries and explore new frontiers in technologies, strategies, and more. That’s exactly why I started hosting the Nifty Awards, where inspiring dental entrepreneurs can get the spotlight they deserve. Amongst our trailblazers, Dr. Don Ton, Founder and CEO of Lumadent, is a true luminary (sorry, I just can’t help but get punny)—and that’s precisely why his company was voted for the 2023 “Favorite Loupe/Headlight” Nifty Award. Shedding light on Don’s vision: The genesis of Lumadent. Don’s journey to entrepreneurship was one marked by determination and resilience. A Vietnamese immigrant who dropped out of high school in Vietnam to pursue education in the United States, he embarked on a path that led him from community college to UCLA for engineering and eventually to dental school at USC. After graduating from dental school and hitting the real world, Don’s entrepreneurial spirit started to shine (I’m just on a roll with these puns!) when his wife—also a dentist— expressed a need for better lighting in her dental office. Together, they attended a dental conference to browse the market, only to be met with

Dr. Alan Stern’s journey— marked by both triumphs and setbacks—exemplifies the qualities that this award celebrates. His dedication to sharing his experiences, offering guidance, and nurturing the human aspect of dentistry has earned him this esteemed title.

Something I admire about Alan is the openness and vulnerability he displays about his own experiences and struggles. What’s so profound to me with Alan’s candidness about the trials and tribulations he’s undergone (or is going through) is that it helps people feel less alone. When he wears his heart on his sleeve, you know he’s someone you can confide in and reach out to. Even better, he helps you realize there’s no shame in opening up. As a seasoned dentist with 42 years of experience in the field, Alan has experienced firsthand the rollercoaster track that comes with our profession—one filled with highs and lows. “I’ve been knocked down pretty hard in dentistry and life,” he said. “But I’ve dusted myself off just with the intent of doing what I must do to fulfill my purpose in life and support my family.” We all know those despondent feelings that arise when you hit a significant setback in your life—it can feel like the world’s

“Best if used by 2023.” To Alan, dentists have a shelf life, much like a carton of milk stamped with a “best if used by” date. He saw 2023 as his “best by” date and, rather than succumbing to the idea of retirement, Dr. Stern embraced a new chapter with enthusiasm and purpose. For Alan, the “golden years” aren’t about spending your savings or idling away one’s days on a porch. Recognizing the need for a transition, he sold his practice to a mentee and shifted his focus towards mentoring, coaching, and inspiring others.

Alan firmly believes that a purpose-driven life leads to a longer, more fulfilling, and happier existence: “When you have a purpose,” he said to me, “you live better.” He also acknowledged the crucial role that family can play in maintaining balance and happiness in one’s life—he sees his role as a father and husband as an integral part of his overall journey. He proudly spoke of his 46-year marriage, considering his two children to be the joy of his life. As 2023 draws to a close, Alan’s sights are set on the future. He aspires to continue speaking to dental groups, expanding his coaching initiatives, and publishing more books. Beyond 2024, he envisions becoming a keynote speaker at dental conferences and sharing his wisdom and experiences with a broader audience. This Nifty Award holds deep significance for Alan, serving as a wellspring of motivation to continue his inspiring work. Alan’s heartfelt message for his fellow dental professionals. Alan’s message for dental professionals is powerful: Every action in dentistry—no matter how routine or mundane it feels—matters. Whether you’re an owner dentist, an associate dentist, an administrator, a hygienist, or a dental assistant, remember that you make a difference—and never lose sight of your work’s humanity. Remain connected to the people you

serve, and never lose your passion and sense of purpose in the face of challenges and changes in the profession. “Don’t ever lose your heart, he told me. “Don’t ever lose your why.”

Dr. Alan Stern’s mission is to help dentists keep the passion that drove them to pursue a career in this great and important profession alive. “Enjoy The Ride” is full of stories and practical advice for creating a successful practice and happy personal life based on Dr. Stern’s life and four-decade long career. Find your why again and let dentistry help you express your special gifts to the world.

tenets have been pivotal in forging meaningful connections within the dental community, where customers aren’t merely clients but integral contributors to their journey’s success. For instance, Mango Voice launched the “12 Days of Mango” initiative last December. It wasn’t limited to new customers; current ones also reaped the benefits. It had such a positive reaction that they decided to take it further in 2023, introducing the “25 Days of Mango.” But this friendly approach isn’t just relevant to Mango Voice’s customers—the same standards apply to their team. Kevin and Richard firmly believe that “teamwork makes the dream work,” and working with one another respectfully is vital to a healthy company culture. Kevin’s daily routine even includes personal interaction with every team member, providing a warm and supportive start to the day. The Mango Voice advantage. Of course, Mango Voice’s reputation as the go-to phone system for dental professionals extends beyond its friendly demeanor. Diverging from conventional phone systems that serve a wide array of industries, Mango Voice has adopted a specialized approach dedicated to addressing the distinctive requirements of the dental field. And—in addition to Richard’s all-star customer service skills—I genuinely believe Kevin to be the most accessible leader in the dental industry. His willingness to engage with customers has become a hallmark of Mango’s culture. Kevin’s approach reflects a servant mentality, where he sees himself as part of a team—not above it—a quality that many leaders unfortunately lack. Also, let’s not forget that Mango Voice has no intimidating equipment, an easy-to-use interface, ground-breaking integrations, seamless features, and unbeatable U.S.-based customer service—not to mention how they truly care about you and your business. Looking ahead to 2024:

“Unlocking the black box.” 2023 has been a year of growth and success for Mango Voice, but what does the future hold? Well, the team at Mango Voice is brimming with excitement as they gear up to unleash some more game-changing features. In Kevin’s words, “We are work-ing on some transformational technology at Mango that is going to drive a lot of value in a dental practice.”

Mango Voice CEO Kevin Tallman

Their latest venture focuses on providing deeper insights into phone call interactions with-in the practice. It’s common knowledge that voice commu-nication is the lifeblood of any dental office, as the efficiency of patient scheduling, inquiries, and appointment coordination often depends on these interac-tions. > Mango Voice (cont’d) Mango Voice aims to change this. They are preparing to introduce new alerts and reports that will comprehensively understand how phone communication impacts the practice’s overall performance. With a focus on extracting valuable insights from each call, they’re ensuring that individual team members and the entire practice can accurately measure their efficiency and success. But the innovations don’t stop there. Mango Voice is committed to deepening the integration of these insights into the broader practice management systems used by dental professionals. This means an even more seamless and holistic view of each patient interaction, offering a clearer picture of how the practice serves its patients. The sensible path to success: Kevin’s advice for business owners. Kevin compares business ownership to parenting, where the responsibility of nurturing and growing your business is akin to raising a child. Likewise, navigating the intricate landscape of business ownership

requires a balance of emotional resilience and strategic acumen. Emotions often run high in the world of dentistry. It’s easy to allow emotions to dominate decision-making, but Kevin believes that allowing emotions to take the reins can lead to suboptimal outcomes. Thus, Kevin believes that the key to success—both in business and in life—lies in nurturing mental fortitude and rationality. Individuals can make better strategic decisions and cultivate a deeper sense of happiness by ensuring that emotions don’t overpower rational thinking. The ability to approach challenges with a clear and logical mindset—unclouded by emotional turbulence—is the sensible path to success. On that note, as somebody who has worked with Mango Voice for quite some time, I can vouch firsthand that they can bring a whole lot of “peace of mind” to dentists, practice owners, and team members. You can rest assured that your communication systems are in expert hands with Mango Voice, allowing you to focus on your core expertise—dentistry.

It makes us feel good about ourselves. So, when I can support somebody in their growth and watch how confident they become—how valuable they become—I get chills about it.”

And that’s precisely why I host initiatives like the Nifty Awards. I love spotlighting the fantastic people who make up the dental community, and giving folks the recognition they deserve—folks like Dr. Kathryn Alderman.

Even the most inspirational entrepreneurs encounter moments of self-doubt and uncertainty where they need a North Star. Amidst Kathryn’s most trying moments, she discovered solace and wisdom in the counsel of a mentor—and I’m so honored that she credits me as her “guiding light.”

I may not be perfect, but I try my best to help everyone in the dental community—and I’ll keep doing everything I can to help all of us in dentistry get to a higher level.

Voted as “Favorite Nifty Thrifty Member of the Year,” Kathryn deserves to be recognized as a pillar of the Nifty community. In a heartfelt conversation with Kathryn, we explored her “why,” her advice to fellow dental professionals, and her plans for the future. Kathryn’s inspirational mentorship journey. Don’t let yourself get torn in every direction; understand your values and craft your life around them. Family, to Kathryn, isn’t a compartmentalized aspect of life—it’s the lifeblood of her success story. We all have different definitions of “ success,” but for Kathryn, success encompasses the harmonious balance between professional achievements and a fulfilling family life. “Success is more than just a thriving practice,” she emphasizes. Kathryn’s mother shared some priceless wisdom that struck

a chord with her: “Keep work and personal life separate so that you can give your all in each.” For Kathryn, creating strict boundaries to ensure she was fully engaged at work and wholly present with her family at home has been imperative to her “success.” It’s not just about working hard but working smart, ensuring that every moment is purposefully utilized. What does 2024 have in store for Kathryn? In the dawn of 2024, Kathryn’s focus is unwavering—melding her passion for mentoring, marketing, and public relations with cutting-edge AI technologies. This amalgamation, she believes, will not only revolutionize dental practices but also augment the skills and efficiencies of the professionals involved.

However, amidst the excitement of technological advancement, Kathryn sounds a poignant note of caution: Remain authentic, for AI can enhance but not replace the genuine human connection. Kathryn is also a big advocate for pausing occasionally to take a moment for yourself. Her words serve as a gentle reminder—amidst the algorithms and innovations, dental professionals are, above all, humans.

When I sat down with Duane (commonly known as Tink) to discuss his award, he told me how thankful he felt about the recognition: “I’m touched. I’m honored. I’m humbled. I love what I do and appreciate that people appreciate what I’m doing here.”

“The ToothCop.” What might set Tink apart even more than his authenticity is that he’s like a human radar in the dental compliance field. He can boost dentists’ confidence in their practice because they know Tink’s got their back and keeps them in the loop on the ever-changing dental scene. Tink always ensures his clients are ahead of the game, informing them about upcoming regulations well before they kick in.

Tink’s the real deal. Tons of folks keep up with Tink on social media, and it’s impressive how many people will attend his seminars, go to his lectures, and work with him year after year. When I asked him what his secret was to get such a loyal following, Tink credited his realness that makes these people such die-hard fans. “There’s a lot of fake people out there,” Tink said.

In addition to being a human radar, his expertise is invaluable for any dentist. He dives deep into the compliance ocean, covering everything from HIPAA to OSHA, infection control, radiology compliance, sedation safety, medical emergency preparedness, and even Medicaid compliance programs—and it’s the latter three that really set his company apart from others in the field of compliance.

Authenticity is a rare gem. It’s the kind of thing that sets folks apart, and Tink’s got it in spades. He believes in empowering dentists, giving them the confidence to navigate the maze of healthcare regulations, all while staying true to themselves.

But what really sets Tink apart is his background as a former investigator for the Texas Dental Board. Yep, you heard me right. He came from traditional law enforcement to turn into what some folks humorously call the “ToothCop.” That unique perspective adds a layer of scrutiny that’s a game-changer in the compliance world—it’s like having a

He’s passionate about encouraging others to do the same—to break free from their cozy corners and take a leap into the unknown. As our conversation ended, Tink had a word of wisdom for the readers of Dental Lifestyles Magazine: “Do not remain the same person a year from now.” These words ring loud and clear, a call to action for dental professionals to embrace change and strive for excellence in their field. Tink’s authenticity and genuine care for the dental community make it easy to understand why he was voted in for this award. His ability to keep dentists ahead of the game by staying ahead of ever-changing regulations is like having a trusted ally by your side. Congratulations, Tink! You earned it.

Dr. Trav Campbl Winner of the 2023 "Favorite Online Dental Resource" Nifty Award

So many mind-opening

dental resources are available online, with endless amounts of experts offering stellar advice. However, in 2023, one name stood out above the rest, clinching the coveted “Favorite Online Dental Resource” Nifty Award. Dr. Travis Campbell—otherwise affectionately known by his moniker, the “Dental Insurance Guy”—has deservedly captured the attention and respect of the dental community. Currently an author, trainer, speaker, contributor to various online dental communities, and dental coach and consultant, Dr. Campbell delivers practical, actionable content that dentists and team members can use immediately. He dispels many myths and misinformation around today’s dental insurance policies, with a mission to help his fellow dentists navigate the complexities of being exceptional doctors, business owners, and leaders all while still having a life outside of work. I’ve always had a front-row seat to Travis’s journey and I’ve gotta say, I’m constantly amazed by the impressive progress he keeps making. With my dual role as the Editor of Dental Lifestyles Magazine and the host of the Nifty Awards, I had the honor of sitting down with Travis to discuss his story. We delved into why he got into dental insurance, his aspirations, and the invaluable

insights he offers through his work. Travis’s pandemic pivot. Like yours truly, Travis is a born and bred Texan. He’s been a practicing dentist since 2009, after graduating from Baylor University in Waco, Texas (2005) and then Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas. After Travis graduated dental school and hit the ground running, he soon realized—like many dentists inevitably do— that dealing with dental insurance can be a real pain in the butt. At that point, he already knew he needed to demystify the labyrinth of dental insurance. But he wasn’t yet focused on assisting his fellow practitioners to navigate its intricate web confidently. However, things changed after the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Like many of us did at the time, Travis would still go into his office every day just to maintain his sanity. As much as he loved his kids, being around the house all day every day was a bit maddening. However, during those times, he would only see one patient a day if he was lucky. With so much time on his hands, Travis started trying to wrap his head around dental insurance and get a better grasp of its nuances. Delving into the dental insurance puzzle. Once Travis started asking questions, he realized that the

information available was often convoluted or inaccurate—even dental insurance companies proved to be poor sources. This frustration led him to immerse himself in the intricacies of insurance contracts, state and federal laws, the primary sources of insurance information, and more. With this newfound knowledge, Travis embarked on a mission to help dental professionals understand the complexities of dental insurance, leaving no room for myths or misconceptions. He decided to write a comprehensive guidebook, “Understanding Dental Insurance: A Guide for Dentists and Their Teams,” and created a space for fellow dentists to come together and get the training needed to either avoid or quickly overcome most challenges that come with dental insurance. Fast forward to the present, and countless individuals have found refuge in Travis’s knowledge. Thanks to him, many dentists have enjoyed better practice management, more informed treatment planning, and, ultimately, happier patients.

In addition, he is organizing a series of conferences focused on various aspects of practice management, a realm often overlooked in dental education. To our readers, Travis extends his heartfelt gratitude for their support. He encourages you to seek solutions for any challenges you encounter in your dental practice and life. Whether dealing with the complexities of dental insurance or broader life issues, he emphasizes that solutions are always waiting to be discovered. Winner of the 2023 “Favorite Small Equipment Company” Nifty Award responsiveness to Medidenta, headquartered in Sean’s inquiries—whether they were Las Vegas, NV, has been at the forefront of dental technology for over 80 years. Their product lineup includes high-speed and low-speed handpieces, the renowned CR Rated Prophy Magic prophy angles, whitening products, the groundbreaking Genius Endo File System, and more. Yet, Medidenta’s story goes beyond its impressive product range, so I sat down with Sean Ryan, their Chief Marketing Officer. We explored what makes Medidenta stand out and how they clinched the prestigious title of “Best Small Equipment Vendor” at the Nifty Awards despite the intense competition in the dental equipment field. Many of my Nifty Thrifty members would be surprised to hear that Sean wasn’t always too keen on using social media. When I came to Sean about joining the Nifty Thrifty Dentists Facebook group a few years ago, he initially had reservations about the potential of social media. He was still determining the effort and dedication it would demand. Nevertheless, Sean quickly recognized the transformative power of social media and was inspired by my approach to it. Since then, Sean has embraced the enthusiasm of the community and the opportunity to interact directly with them.

endorsements or criticisms— has become a cornerstone of his role at Medidenta. Sean Ryan acknowledged that there’s always the risk of encountering “keyboard warriors” and critics in the world of social media. However, with his “mathematical mind,” he can subtract emotion from the equation and keep his head level with a solution-oriented mindset. Sean is committed to making any customer’s journey easy. Sean and his team at Medidenta understand the frustration dental professionals may face when dealing with delays from other vendors. Medidenta takes pride in its ability to deliver products quickly and efficiently, often the same day an order is placed. Streamlining the ordering process is another aspect of their customer-centric approach. Medidenta’s online platforms— whether it’s our special Nifty Thrifty landing page or just their general website—provide a hassle-free experience for their customers. They make discounts readily available, ensuring customers don’t need to hunt for promotional codes. One of the most distinguishing aspects of Medidenta, however, is its hands-on approach to customer service. Their team comprises knowledgeable, responsive professionals who

are always ready to assist customers. From those who answer phone calls to the support provided by team members—uch as Amanda, Chelsea & Gabbie in customer service, to Jose & Jamon in handpiece repairs, to the availability of upper management—Medidenta ensures that customers have a warm and supportive experience whenever they interact with their team.

It recently launched an education program that aims to bring dental professionals together at its Las Vegas headquarters for hands-on learning experiences. Their first session received stellar reviews, reinforcing the importance of this initiative. Medidenta plans to expand this program in the coming year, providing more opportunities for professionals to enhance their skills.

What’s in store for 2024? For Medidenta, 2024 holds exciting prospects. While the company might compete at a different scale than industry giants like Henry Schein, Sean and his team have identified opportunities within the growing landscape of group practices and DSOs. Recognizing these larger dental entities’ unique needs, Medidenta has tailored solutions to serve this market segment better.

Complacency, the “silent killer.” Sean imparted a timeless piece of entrepreneurial advice to wrap up our conversation. He emphasized complacency’s dangers, labeling it a “silent business killer.”

In addition to these market developments, Medidenta has an array of tech projects in the pipeline, with around five or six new releases anticipated throughout 2024. These products promise to offer unique solutions and elevate dental practices to new heights, ensuring that Medidenta keeps pushing the envelope of dental technology. Medidenta’s commitment to education is also a key focus for 2024. The company has a long relationship with The Las Vegas Institute, supporting courses at their main campus.

Sean’s counsel is clear for aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners—never become complacent. Keep the flames of ambition burning, for complacency extinguishes progress. He encourages business owners to continually challenge themselves, adapt, and innovate, and in doing so, they can avoid the perils of stagnation and thrive. Sean’s final thoughts centered on the idea that complacency isn’t just a business killer; it’s a “universal threat.” Whether in business, friendships, marriage, or even sports, complacency has the potential to stifle growth and success. According to Sean, the key to a thriving business and a fulfilling life is to confront complacency headon and embrace change as an opportunity to shine.

So, I have enjoyed a front-seat view of the great work he has done on social media through The Business of Dentistry Facebook group. When the Nifty Thrifty Dentist community voted Chris “Social Media Personality of the Year,” I was extremely excited to share his story. Chris is a real straight shooter. When I sat down with Chris to discuss his award, I couldn’t help but ask the burning question: What’s the secret behind Chris’s triumphant win? In this digital age, where so many people are vying for the spotlight as social media personalities, what did he do differently to take the cake?

struggles—including Tourette syndrome, Dysgraphia, Dyslexia, and ADHD—and how he was one of the first students ever in the United States to be classified as both “Gifted” and “Learning Disabled.” Chris was told that he would never learn to read or write beyond a high school level, that he was “stupid” and wouldn’t “amount to much,” that he could never be good at math, and so on.

But those naysayers were very wrong. Chris did well in his classes, and he made it to college. However, Chris didn’t start considering dental school until he got a nasty tooth infection, and a dentist relieved his pain by removing a tooth. This experience reshaped his perception of dentistry; he realized our profession is more than just administering painful shots and taking money from patients. He realized how much dentists

care about helping people and transforming their lives—an epiphany that deeply resonated with his sense of purpose. Fast forward to the present, and Chris has not only become a dentist but also a thriving entrepreneur, an influential figure in the dental community, and the deserving recipient of a Nifty Award. He’s proof that our past does not define our future and that, with the right mindset, we can overcome any obstacle and reach heights we may have once thought were unattainable. Is it the fear of failure or success that gets in our way? On that note, I couldn’t help but implore about Chris’s resilience. Every entrepreneur has encountered their fair share of “naysayers,” and, for most of us, the biggest antagonist of all is ourselves. Many of us have to deal with the relentless, self-deprecating voice inside of our heads that questions our worth. Whether you want to call it imposter syndrome or being your own worst enemy, the entrepreneurial journey is often marked by battles with self-doubt. Interestingly, Chris thinks this mode of thinking isn’t anchored in fear of failure but rather the fear of success. We all have a comfort zone where we excel at being who we are today, but venturing into the uncharted territory of becoming a dentist with a $2 million or $3 million

practice brings uncertainty. The fear that we might have to change, sacrifice, or even question our worthiness can be paralyzing. “Don’t have dreams; have goals.” For anyone grappling with similar fears, Chris had a word of advice: “Don’t have dreams, have goals.” Dreams are like distant horizons we can only envision, places we’ve never seen. Goals, on the other hand, are like roadmaps, meticulously charting our journey and marking every milestone along the way. It’s akin to acknowledging that even the grandest elephant can only be consumed one bite at a time. Chris emphasized the importance of savoring small successes, replenishing one’s spirit, and recharging for the next endeavor. Success, he attested, is not about listening to the voices in our heads but instead embracing the relentless determination that only we can summon.

Dr. Heh Hendris Winner of the 2023 “Favorite Clinical Instructor of the Year” Nifty Award to bring home bigger For Heath, one of the most For the 2023 “Favorite Clinical affordably paychecks. fulfilling aspects of teaching is Instructor of the Year” Nifty Award, I tossed the best of the best into the hat from all corners of the community. And, of all those great clinicians, Dr. Heath Henrickson claimed the prize.

For Heath, being chosen as the favorite clinical instructor by his peers and students has left him feeling fulfilled. “It’s a real honor,” he said. “I try to connect with my participants—with my doctors—and I hope they feel genuinely interested in dentistry… I enjoy my teaching probably as much—if not more so—than my clinical work.” Would you do dentistry if not for the money? Getting a DMD isn’t easy. Laboring for that degree requires focus, determination, patience, and then some. For anybody to put themselves through the grind of pursuing the path of dentistry, they’ll need a good incentive. For many, a big motivation is money, and—in Heath’s eyes— there’s nothing wrong with that. He firmly believes that no dentist should feel guilty for trying to make a pretty penny to provide for both themselves and their families. That’s why one of the big topics he teaches dentists about is creating a “win-win for everybody; patients get the dental care they need, all while you practice more efficiently and

To be fair, there are so many instructors out there who are fountains of knowledge when it comes to making more money. But what I love about Heath is his ethical approach: Heath has a profound commitment to providing care to patients in need. He doesn’t turn away patients based on financial constraints and believes in making dental care accessible. What’s 2024 looking like for Heath? In 2024, Heath is looking forward to “exploding his teaching.” He’s particularly enthusiastic about expanding his teaching beyond Utah to other states—such as my “home range” of Texas—where he can reach a broader audience and provide valuable training to more dentists. Additionally, he plans to enhance his online presence, offering continuous education to doctors, particularly those certified in IV sedation. His approach to teaching is about fostering genuine connections with his students, imparting knowledge, and instilling confidence. He takes immense pride in knowing that his teaching is making a significant impact on the future of dentistry. In his words, “I really do feel like if they pick up the skill that I’m teaching, it makes all the difference in their future and practice.

witnessing that magical “light bulb moment” when his students grasp a concept or technique—the moment when it all “clicks.”. Heath understands that when that light bulb goes off, he’s effectively replicating his knowledge and skills, empowering his students to help countless patients. That’s a passion I can definitely relate to, or any dentist for that matter—the drive to make a positive impact on people’s lives. “Just do it.” For those who aspire to follow in Heath’s footsteps—transitioning from private practice to mentorship and aiding other doctors in leveling up their clinical skills—Heath’s advice is refreshingly straightforward: “Just do it, and be true to yourself.” The biggest obstacle is not taking the plunge. Dentists have the unique privilege of learning from their peers and gaining hands-on experience, Heath believes. The dental community, unlike some other fields, encourages a culture of knowledge-sharing and collaboration. If you have a passion for a specific aspect of dentistry, the resources are available to help you embark on your teaching journey. The key is to make yourself known, leverage the power of the internet, and engage with potential mentees. Heath said, “You’ll have an audience, and doctors will want to learn from you.”

Being a dentist is a balancing act. Despite being a prestigious award winner, Heath is human, just like you and I. Ultimately, he’s a clinician trying to maintain a work-life balance, grappling with the same challenges we go through—whether in practice or at home. If you’re struggling to keep your head above water amidst all the stress, Heath thinks the first step is identifying what truly motivates you and making that your passion. Shifting your focus to something you’re passionate about can not only alleviate stress but also allow you to serve your patients, community, and family with renewed energy and commitment. In response to the doctors who may doubt their surgical skills and feel apprehensive about diving into more complex procedures, Heath offers a practical approach. Wisdom tooth extractions can be a starting point thanks to their gradual learning curve. Dentists can start with cases that align with their comfort levels and progressively gain expertise. The more you practice, the better you become.

That’s it.” In an industry that is ever-evolving, it’s heartening to see professionals like Ali and companies like Doc Sites recognized and celebrated for their dedication to serving the dental community. Min Samp, RDH Winner of the 2023 “Favorite Marketing Expert” Nifty Award

Having sat in on her presentations before, it was no surprise to me to see the overwhelming support of Minal Sampat for “Nifty Award for Marketer of the Year.”

Something that sets Minal apart is the number of hats she wears. Not only is she a marketing expert, meeting planner, speaker, and workshop host, but she also has experience working as a hygienist. This ensures that everything she teaches comes from a tried-and-true, bootson-the-ground perspective. Minal was blown away by the support she received from the community this year, even remarking that her social media was full of love on the day the results were revealed. And she was gracious enough to sit down and share some thoughts with you about what may have helped her make such a big impact in the dental community this year. Give to receive. When I asked her why she thinks she got so many votes, she mentioned that it probably has to do with how she shows up to workshops. You see, she noticed a pattern when she traveled to conferences and conventions to share her insights: People would often come up to her and ask how they could begin working with her as a marketer. The reason, according to Minal,

is counterintuitive: She set up her workshops in a way to give as much free and useful information as possible, rather than treating it as a sales presentation to get new clients. By “giving away an abundance of information” on the front end, it earned trust with her audience. Making the switch. You might think that Minal is a dental hygienist turned speaker and marketing expert, but it’s actually the opposite. She studied marketing in college, and her first job out of college was as a marketing director for a large dental practice. The reason she went to hygiene school? To better understand patient behavior and communication, not to mention the world of healthcare. She states that knowing how the patient thinks and what they experience is one key to ensuring they get the care they need.

You already have the power. When I asked Minal if there was anything she wanted to make sure I shared with the readers, she relayed something her college counselor shared with her: “If you think you want to do something, you’re already born with the power to do something. If you think you can make a difference, provide value, and help others, then do it, one hundred percent.” I’ve seen this in my interactions with her personally. When she says she’ll do something, she’ll overdeliver.

your audience wanting more, it creates urgency and a fear of missing out, which spurs them to action. Her final message? “We work in a brilliant industry. The fact that we get to show up to work on an eerie day to give care is amazing.” So, she encourages people to reflect at the end of their day on one positive thing that happened, to keep their outlook sunny.

Minal’s go-to marketing tip “Don’t over share, over deliver.” Minal noted that many dental professionals give too much information. She sees too many social media posts, too much talking, an overload. Instead of oversharing, she recommends over delivering. When you leave

Joshua argues that the same mindset applies to dental practices. The more value you can provide to people, whether they become your patient or not, the better off you’ll be in the long run. Build a reputation of being helpful and friendly. After all, even if someone comes to you and doesn’t become a patient, they’ll still tell other people in their life about the experience they had with you. Build and showcase an integrated life. One powerful tip the Scotts shared about marketing, especially on social media, is to show your real life. If you follow them on social media, you’ll see plenty of content about their kids, their hobbies, and their life outside of the marketing business in addition to posts about marketing.

Share stories over facts. The Scotts’ biggest piece of marketing advice? People will remember stories far more than they’ll remember facts or statistics. If you want to market your dental practice, make sure you’re telling stories. “Be authentic, be yourself, and tell your story. People are going to remember that far more than your list of services, or the new equipment you just got,” they emphasize. For example, Josh shared a story from SMYL Dentistry in Houston. After starting and doing much of their practice and branding by themselves, they agreed to let Joshua take over to create something unique in the dental space with great success. You can see the results for yourself at SMYLDentistry. com.

ral Nifty Award for Dentist Influencer of the Year, Dr. Paul Goodman sat down with me to share his mission and advice for dentists. “I’m on a mission to make the dental world ‘less annoying,’” he remarked to me. “I don’t know what happiness is all the time, but I definitely know what annoyance is. And my goal is to make things less annoying for people.” Can anyone relate? Put positively, Dr. Goodman loves to help dentists bond together, to feel proud of themselves for the work they do, and to, frankly, inject a little bit of humor into what can be a monotonous day for dentists. Life outside the operatory. Early in Dr. Goodman’s career, he ran a group called the Rising Dentist Study Club of Philadelphia. He saw from the beginning that so much of the dental community focuses on life INSIDE the practice. We talk about implants, patient communication, and getting to multiple practices. Instead, Dr. Goodman sought to initiate in what he calls “spicy conversations” of life outside the operatory. This includes things like dental school debt, DSOs, the way dentists treat each other—all built around the idea that we’re in this together as dentists.

The limits of social media. Although he is active on social media, Dr. Goodman also understands that it has its limitations. “There’s nothing like meeting someone in person and speaking to them face to face,” he said, continuing, “the written word has no context.” He shared a story about posting things on social media that were factually true, and would have been completely understandable in person, but when he posted them online? He was accused of sounding doomy and gloomy.

and he asks his wife where the paper towels are in person, she could easily show him where they are. However, if she’s out of the house and he texts her that same question? It’s so much harder for her to respond in a single text that helps him find them.

From Facebook to face-toface. Because of all these limitations, when I asked Dr. Goodman his goals for the near future, he mentioned that he’s dreaming of ways to help people connect in person. This could mean He also shared a humorous sto- establishing and coordinating ry with me about having trouble events on his own, or even finding paper towels. He said if encouraging people to attend his kids make a mess events put on by others.

Beyond the four walls When I asked Paul about his personal goals for the next year, he mentioned spending more time with family and making more connections with the people who matter most. In fact, for anyone reading this, he encourages them to call up the nearest dentists down the street and invite them to lunch: “Don’t stop calling until someone says yes… the more you can connect with the people in your neighborhood, the better things will go for you.”

She mentioned to me that the biggest reward for her wasn’t this award itself, but the confirmation that her message is resonating with her audience. A speaker wants to know if their message is landing, and what better way to confirm that her message is landing than for her to be voted Speaker of the Year in the inaugural Nifty Awards.

Winner of the 2023 “Favorite Dental AI Company” Nifty Award

We live in the digital age,

and there’s no doubt about it. From chatbots to self-driving cars, sometimes all this wizardry makes me feel like we’re in an episode of The Twilight Zone. And, in this ever-evolving era, one company has set a new standard for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in dental practices worldwide: Pearl, the recipient of the 2023 “Favorite Dental AI Company” Nifty Award. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Mike Buckner—the Executive Vice President of Revenue at Pearl—to delve into his company’s big win. The excitement in Mike’s voice was palpable as he shared insights into the company’s journey and the transformative impact of its AI technology on the dental community. Pearl is redefining dental AI standards. A great mix of folks from the Nifty thrifty community—dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, vendors, coaches, consultants, you name it—came together to give Pearl the nod for their award. They beat out some big names—Overjet, Denti.Ai, Bola AI, and so on—which left Mike feeling “glad and grateful that the community is so supportive.” When we started talking business, Mike touched on the uniqueness of Pearl’s approach, highlighting the company’s

dedication to understanding the needs of the entire dental team. Pearl is focused on crafting a product that aligns with dental professionals’ requirements for any role within a practice. Their multi-faceted approach ensures that each dental team member—from dentists and hygienists to assistants and administrative staff—benefits from a tailored and seamlessly integrated solution, ultimately enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire practice. What struck me most was Mike’s reflection on the journey of the Pearl leadership team. These folks aren’t newbies; they’ve been around the block with many successful dental tech companies. But what makes Pearl different? For them, it’s not just about bringing in the latest and greatest dental AI—it’s about setting new standards and changing how we use it. Is Pearl’s AI the future of dentistry? Mike believes Pearl’s AI will become integral to every dental practice worldwide within three to five years. ”It’s going to become the new standard of care,” he told me. And in a world where everyone tosses around the term “AI” like it’s confetti, Mike gave me the scoop on why Pearl has the real deal. Drawing parallels with the familiar smartphone AI technology, he made it simpler to

understand. When you go into your phone’s photos and search for “Dog,” “Tree,” “Car,” or something random, your phone uses AI computer vision to bring these items up instantly. With that comparison, Mike explained how Pearl’s AI utilizes computer vision similarly for instant and accurate analysis of X-rays—no manual fuss, just top-notch AI that keeps improving. As we delved into Pearl’s successful 2023, Mike shared the company’s strategic vision for the upcoming year. Picture this: seamless workflows, native integrations with other software, and a laser focus on patient flow. Pearl wants AI to be like a sidekick—always there, making things smoother. Bringing AI into your dental practice can be a seamless integration, thanks to Pearl. Mike had some comforting news for those on the fence about fully integrating dental AI into their practice: It doesn’t need to be a headache. Trainers and customer service personnel who know the dental world and have hands-on experience will help ensure the transition is smooth and tailored to the industry’s unique demands. The platform’s intuitive design facilitates a quick understanding, with practices up and running in as little as 20 to 30 minutes. In addressing concerns about the necessity of AI in dental practices, Mike touched upon

the tangible benefits that Pearl brings to the table. The platform’s ability to identify undiagnosed treatments from previous X-rays and provide actionable insights for patient care significantly enhances the morning huddle. Even the skeptics will end up saying, “How did we survive without this!?” Pearl’s Nifty Award is another stepping stone on the path to greatness. As we wrapped up our conversation, Mike dropped a truth bomb: “If it makes you money, it costs you nothing.” When incorporating dental AI into your practice—particularly with Pearl—the return on investment can be a game-changer, offering practices the ability to uncover undiagnosed treatments and streamline their workflows for increased efficiency and profitability. Pearl’s journey is not just about winning awards; it’s about reshaping the future of dentistry through innovative AI solutions. This Nifty Award is just another stepping stone for Pearl—a company that has not only earned its accolades but is poised to redefine the very fabric of modern dentistry.

Genevieve Ppe Winner of the 2023 “Favorite Dental Consultant” Nifty Award What’s on Genevieve’s horizon for 2024? Looking ahead to 2024, Genevieve has some exciting plans. Professionally, she’s all about expansion. She has her sights set on ramping up productivity, and to make it happen, she’s bringing in a virtual assistant. This move isn’t just about her; it’s about giving her clients the level of attention they deserve.

It’s a real treat for me to in-

troduce you to an outstanding individual who clinched the “Favorite Dental Consultant” award in 2023. Genevieve Poppe’s expertise and commitment to the industry have earned her this well-deserved accolade. So, let’s dive into her story and what makes her tick. A surprise win. When Genevieve received the news of her win, she was “surprised”—and I can’t say I’d react any differently. Dental consulting is a fiercely competitive market. I can’t imagine going head-to-head with some of the industry’s big dogs and coming out on top. It’s a feat that’s bound to leave anyone awestruck. Genevieve attributes her success to the power of relationships. It’s not just about the dentists and former clients she’s worked with. She’s more like an “industry friend” who has built bridges across various corners of the dental field. Her

extensive network and dedication to delivering tangible results have certainly played a pivotal role in her journey to becoming the “Favorite Dental Consultant.” Running a dental practice requires being a leader. People in the industry can’t stop singing her praises, and it’s easy to see why. Genevieve doesn’t just boost people’s confidence; she empowers them to grow their practices, and that’s something folks truly appreciate. I asked Genevieve to share one piece of advice for dental practice owners, and let me tell you, it wasn’t easy for her to pick just one. “Learn to be a great boss,” she told me, highlighting the importance of stepping intothe role of a leader rather than trying to be everyone’s “mom.” In her eyes, a dental practice should be built on a strong foundation of performance and accountability, with the practice owner steering the ship.

And she’s not stopping there. In the coming year, Genevieve is toying with the idea of adding more coaches to her team. She’s picky about who she works with, and this expansion is a clear example of her commitment to supporting the dental community and pushing the boundaries of her consultancy services. But Genevieve’s not just about business—she’s all about exploration, too. Travel is her passion, and she’s already joking about landing clients in exotic locations. Places like Hawaii could be her next playground, where her expertise could weave magic. Genevieve is excited about the prospect of combining business with pleasure, taking her consultancy services to some of the most beautiful and intriguing spots on the globe. The balancing act: Genevieve’s advice for entrepreneurs. For those eyeing a career in dental consultancy, Genevieve has some sage advice. First

things first, get crystal clear on what you bring to the table. It’s not just about experience; it’s about articulating the value you can offer to a practice or organization. She encourages budding consultants to craft a compelling elevator pitch that showcases their ability to make a real difference. If you’re inspired by Genevieve’s work and want to collaborate with her, there are plenty of ways to make it happen. She’s all over social media, has a website, and you can find her on LinkedIn. For clients looking to engage her as a consultant, Genevieve suggests reaching out by email or to schedule a call to get acquainted. Juggling work and life is a universal struggle, and Genevieve gets that. She’s learned that perfection in balancing these demanding roles is a bit of a unicorn. Her advice is simple yet profound: Learn to say “no.” Turn down opportunities that don’t align with your goals and values. Her experiences have shown her that saying “no” to a client who doesn’t quite fit can lead to a happier and more successful practice.

A: This year, I launched a 12-module series on dental hygienists' role in identifying airway complications and sleep disorders, dedicated to my late mother, Linda Marie Sanders. The program aims to transform how dental hygienists evaluate patients, preventing the loss of loved ones to untreated complications. I'm also excited to share that I'll be reading my wedding vows on New Year's Eve, to the love of my life, Dale Stewart. I couldn’t be more thrilled to become your Mrs. Stewart!

Dental Practices Experiencing Unprecedented Increase in Case Acceptance A paradigm shift in dental financing and treatment with AcceptCare.

Dallas-based AcceptCare, a leading software company for the

dental industry and dental division brand of OrthoFi, introduces the first all-in-one fee and treatment presentation software for dental offices. AcceptCare is the only proven case acceptance solution that maximizes access to complete patient care and revenue for dental practices.

“By embracing our new platform, doctors can focus on providing the best care and treatment, leading to improved oral health outcomes for their patients,” continues Ternan.

“The transformative impact AcceptCare has already made with our beta set of dental practices is beyond encouraging,” says AcceptCare CEO Dave Ternan. “We’re seeing case acceptance rates increase, production increase, and as a result, patients receive the complete treatment they need.” Clarksburg Dental in Maryland is experiencing considerable growth in case acceptance, jumping from 22% to 53% in only two months.

Recent data underscores the significance of AcceptCare’s mission. An alarming 65% of patients leave the dentist without accepting the recommended treatment, leading to only 34% getting the treatment they need. AcceptCare seeks to bridge this gap, ensuring patients receive essential care without compromise when they need it.

Clarksburg’s Dr. Ed Lui says, “We love the case acceptance analytics, but we didn’t need to see the numbers to know our case acceptance has increased significantly since implementing AcceptCare - our schedule is filling up faster than ever!” Several practices around the U.S. are using AcceptCare and seeing similar results to Clarksburg in terms of case acceptance. In addition, the practices are closely capturing production data, along with patients receiving the complete care they need. Empowering Doctors to Deliver Complete Care By adopting AcceptCare, dental practices unlock new revenue streams by offering comprehensive treatment options to patients. The platform achieves a remarkable 100% full-cost approval rate by using multiple lenders, plus Compassionate Finance, thus optimizing cash flow for practices. Seamlessly integrated with existing dental software, AcceptCare accurately tracks case acceptance and automatically sends actionable pending treatment reminders to patients. Over 30% of patients accept treatment after leaving the office due to automated recall.

Empowering Patients to Accept Complete Care AcceptCare is not just a boon for dental practices; it places patients in the driver’s seat of their dental care. Patients have multiple financing options tailored to their unique needs and credit levels. With a 100% acceptance rate for all credit levels, patients no longer need to worry about being turned away due to financial constraints. This groundbreaking platform extends its benefits beyond financial empowerment. Patients gain access to timely and recommended treatments, contributing to long-term health benefits and improved overall well-being. Moreover, eliminating awkward financial discussions creates a more comfortable and positive patient experience, encouraging better communication and trust between patients and dental professionals.
