Everna™ Primary Reading Modules

Develop Lifelong Readers In 2019, the National Literacy Trust and Nottingham Trent University found that children using their school or public library were more likely to read for pleasure and had better reading and writing attitudes.

An environment conducive to the exploration of literature is essential.

Whether selecting a book to take home, researching a project, or sitting comfortably for story time, library spaces should be welcoming and fit-for-purpose. It is a game changer to have books on display, facing outwards, open, ready to catch the eye of children walking past. Shelves should not be crammed full; less really is more!

Children won’t search through shelves of well-used books unless they really want something – your library should be like a sweet shop with goodies to catch their eye!

WF Education worked with librarians and educators to design modules specifically intended to engage primary school aged children to read for pleasure and improve literacy, giving custodians choice and speed of implementation.

Choose from our four pre-defined solutions, with options to create spaces with a considered balance of book capacity and browsing opportunities or offer more stock capacity or more presentation shelving in your space.

Our research highlighted 5 key benefits of telling children stories: The Big 5…

• Broadens horizons • Creates community • Tackles challenging topics • Provides a special environment • Is all-inclusive Children can listen on a higher language level than they can read.

Reading aloud makes complex ideas easier to understand and exposes children to vocabulary and language patterns that are not necessarily a part of everyday speech.

The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) shared research from a 2021 survey of primary school teachers. Most teachers (82%) are finding ways to read aloud to their classes at least weekly. The majority on average, are reading daily (58%).

The pattern was similar across the year groups although teachers were more likely to read more frequently with the youngest children.

What sort of special environment should we create for our children, to encourage them to read and to keep them reading?

Creating dedicated, inviting, comfortable and welcoming physical environments is important for connecting positive experiences with reading and literacy.

Gathering groups of children together to listen to a story exposes less able readers to the same rich and engaging books that fluent readers can read on their own and encourages them to explore other titles and become better readers.

A reading culture can be strengthened by children hearing and seeing a trusted adult enjoying and sharing the contents of a wonderful book. Enthusiasm is infectious and children should be encouraged to share the love of any materials that interest them.

70% of children and young people said they did not read daily for pleasure.

Everna™ Teen Reading Range WF Education set about interviewing and surveying hundreds of public and school librarians from across the UK and France to gain insight into what works and what doesn’t when it comes to retaining the engagement of teen readers.

Attention, behaviour, and motivation are critical to successful learning. Flexible environments and zoning can provide a superior learning setting to a traditional classroom or library layout.

Concentration is essential to ensure optimal learning outcomes.

Without their full attention, it is difficult to captivate them during lessons or to engage them to participate in an activity over a longer period.

What if the use of flexible seating, such as bean bags and soft seating, in the classroom or in the library was the solution to creating a relaxed environment for listening and enhanced learning in the school environment?

An awkward position or one that requires special effort to maintain is a distraction and can quickly lead to a decline in focus and comfort. So being comfortable contributes to improving the quality of learning.

Different activities require different configurations. Writing tasks require a desk and a chair, or a solid writable surface but some activities such as reading, thinking, or meditating are optimised with a more comfortable seat to avoid distractions.

Using alternative seating such as bean bags or floor cushions, indoors and outdoors helps improve posture. Pupils and students not having to focus on their position, become more relaxed and engaged in their task.

Gresswell commissioned a whitepaper from the marketing and product engineering teams of our partner Eden Learning Spaces. They conducted qualitative research drawn from the findings of 15 educational site visits and interviews with 40 educational professionals and approximately 60 pupils with extensive user testing.

They carried out initial research into the Abbeyfields School in Morpeth, Northumberland and made some surprising discoveries.

The first results indicate that the levels of comfort and concentration during the individual reading of children aged 6-7 years are higher when using the high back ottoman specially designed for children in the 1st and 2nd learning cycles (nursery and elementary schools).

Bean bags are not just traditional rounded shapes anymore. Using expert ergonomic design, they have been transformed into supportive chair shapes, feature animal characteristics, realistic high-definition nature prints, or even have multiple removable covers with different curriculum topics in vibrant colours.

Flexible Seating: Why bother?

The science of ergonomics is complex.

Research continuously proves that sitting uncomfortably and for extended periods has adverse effects on the body both physically and mentally; so, it shouldn’t be ignored within our learning environments.

A range of versatile seating areas and getting children physically moving around can help with breaking up these lengthy periods of sitting still.

To make the time that is spent sitting down comfortable and ergonomically correct, the use of adjustable and flexible furniture will enable you to adjust the height of the seat and minimise effects. If this is not possible, ergonomically designed chairs will provide crucial postural support.
