Lascells 12 V Switched Power Supply

A traditional step-down transformer based 12 V switched power supply. A mechanism disconnects the output when the voltage setting is changed ensuring that the switch contacts are protected from overload. The unit can also be locked at any setting. Over current protection is by means of a front panel thermal trip.

• AC is available from the two yellow sockets on the front panel.

• DC is available from the black (-ve) and red (+ve) sockets.

• Disconnects the output when the voltage setting is changed, protecting switch contacts from overload.

• The selector switch values are nominal only and indicate the output voltage at maximum output current which should not exceed 5 A. For continuous use the maximum output current should not exceed 4 A. At lower outputs the voltages supplied by the unit will be greater than the marked value. This variation is more pronounced on DC and is approximately 130% of the marked value for 1 A outputs except on the 2 V range which is less than 2 V on DC.

• The DC outputs are capacitor smoothed. The ripple content increases with increased output current.

• The output voltage can be locked at any required value by inserting the long locking screw in the front panel.

Electron Diffraction Tube

The electron diffraction tube is a highly evacuated tube with an electron gun consisting of a pure tungsten heater filament and cylindrical anode all contained in a clear glass bulb. The electrons emitted by the heated cathode are constrained to a narrow beam by an aperture and are then focused by means of an electron-optical system. The resulting tight, monochromatic beam then passes through a micro-mesh nickel grating situated at the aperture of the gun. Onto this grid, a thin layer of polycrystalline graphitised carbon has been deposited by vaporisation. This layer affects the electrons in the beam much like a diffraction grating. The result of this diffraction is seen in the form of an image comprising two concentric rings that become visible on the fluorescent screen. The spot resulting from the un-deflected electron beam continues to be visible at the centre of the rings. Also requires an EHT power supply.

The Fine Beam Tube is used for investigating the deflection of cathode rays in a uniform magnetic field produced by a pair of 300 mm Helmholtz coils. In addition, it can also be used for quantitative determination of the specific charge of an electron e/m.

Located inside a glass bulb with a Neon residual gas atmosphere is an electron gun, which consists of an indirectly heated oxide cathode, Wehnelt cylinder and perforated anode. The gas atoms are ionised along the path of the electrons and a narrow, well-defined, luminescent beam is produced. Incorporated measurement marks facilitate parallax-free determination of the diameter of the circular path of the beam deflected in the magnetic field. The Fine Beam Tube is mounted on a base with coloured connectors. In order to protect the tube, a protective circuit is built into the base, which shuts off any voltage in excess of the base’s pre-set cut-off voltage. The protective circuit prevents excessive voltages from damaging the heater filament and ensures “smooth” switch-on response once the voltage is applied. What is a rheostat?

In its simplest form this is a long piece of wire wrapped around a cylinder, with connectors at either end, and a ‘slider’ on the top.

The slider is a moving connector. You move this along the coil to change the resistance in the circuit, by effectively changing the length of wire.

If you connect the circuit wires so that the top bar of the rheostat is excluded (so connect bottom left, A, and bottom right, B, terminals) the current will pass through all the coil, and you will have maximum resistance.

If you connect either end of the rheostat into the circuit (bottom left, A to top right, C) the current will pass through the coil and out at wherever the slider is, and on to the rest of the circuit (via the bar and terminal C). Moving the slider to make the length shorter will decrease the resistance in the circuit, and vice versa.

Note: The rheostat will work either way round. If it’s wired the opposite way then moving the slider along to seemingly increase the length, will actually decrease the turns and thus resistance.

Carbon Dioxide Detector

This carbon dioxide detector measures CO2, air temperature and humidity. A useful tool to help to regulate ventilation in enclosed spaces such as classrooms, indicating when fresh air should be allowed in to help remove air that contains virus particles and to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. People exhale carbon dioxide when they breathe out. If there is a build-up of this in an area it can indicate that ventilation needs improving. This device adopts a high-precision non-dispersive infrared CO2 sensor that detects CO2 accurately and sensitively. Containing a high-capacity rechargeable lithium battery, making it easily portable.
