Lascells 12 V Switched Power Supply

A traditional step-down transformer based 12 V switched power supply.

A mechanism disconnects the output when the voltage setting is changed ensuring that the switch contacts are protected from overload. The unit can also be locked at any setting. Over current protection is by means of a front panel thermal trip.

•AC is available from the two yellow sockets on the front panel.

•DC is available from the black (-ve) and red (+ve) sockets.

• Disconnects the output when the voltage setting is changed, protecting switch contacts from overload.

• The selector switch values are nominal only and indicate the output voltage at maximum output current which should not exceed 5 A. For continuous use the maximum output current should not exceed 4 A. At lower outputs the voltages supplied by the unit will be greater than the marked value. This variation is more pronounced on DC and is approximately 130% of the marked value for 1 A outputs except on the 2 V range which is less than 2 V on DC.

• The DC outputs are capacitor smoothed. The ripple content increases with increased output current.

• The output voltage can be locked at any required value by inserting the long locking screw in the front panel. EL230320 £146.00

Signal Generators/Oscilloscopes

Premium Signal Generator

One useful feature of this signal generator is that for basic use, you just operate two buttons: One for frequency and one for amplitude. There is, of course, far more sophistication for those who require it. If you want to change waveform or to utilise the step and sweep modes, the display keeps you updated on the status of the generator.

• Unique frequency control: The frequency is set by speed sensitive button.

• Drives speakers, vibration generator etc. directly: The built-in 10 power amplifier effortlessly drives power appliances e.g. vibration generator. The amplifier can deliver more than 1 amp for all frequencies between 0.001 Hz and 100 kHz.

• Step mode: Once the fundamental frequency has been determined (e.g. of spring connected to vibration generator), other harmonics (or overtones) can be simply demonstrated.

• Sweep mode: The generator can sweep through frequency range in order to discover eventual resonances.

• Advanced Features: Connects to your PC through standard USB cable and acts as USB flash drive. Custom waveforms (e.g. created by means of spreadsheet) can be saved to the generator.

Microscale Organic Chemistry Kit

The QUICKFIT® Microscale Chemistry Kit was designed to perform organic chemistry experiments, but on much smaller scale. This reduces your cost of everything involved, smaller amounts of reagents, lower disposal costs and less clamping equipment. Most standard organic chemistry sets may be performed using this set.

The main benefits are: cheaper (reduced solvent costs), safer (smaller amounts of chemicals and no Bunsen burners required), quicker (reduced times for experiments), versatile (many assemblies can be constructed: reflux, distillation, fractional distillation etc.) and easy to assemble (combination of standard QUICKFIT® ground glass joints and sealing ‘O’ rings and plastic screwcaps).

All the kit components are housed in a single plastic tray with a foam liner to keep the glassware safe and secure, in the minimum amount of space. This simplifies the problem of checking equipment, as well as providing safe permanent storage. Dimensions (L x W x D): 40 x 25 x 20 cm (unpacked).

Electron Diffraction Tube

The electron diffraction tube is a highly evacuated tube with an electron gun consisting of a pure tungsten heater filament and cylindrical anode all contained in a clear glass bulb. The electrons emitted by the heated cathode are constrained to a narrow beam by an aperture and are then focused by means of an electron-optical system. The resulting tight, monochromatic beam then passes through a micro-mesh nickel grating situated at the aperture of the gun. Onto this grid, a thin layer of polycrystalline graphitised carbon has been deposited by vaporisation. This layer affects the electrons in the beam much like a diffraction grating. The result of this diffraction is seen in the form of an image comprising two concentric rings that become visible on the fluorescent screen. The spot resulting from the un-deflected electron beam continues to be visible at the centre of the rings. Also requires an EHT power supply.

Specifications:

•Max. filament voltage: 6.3 V AC

•Max. anode voltage: 5 kV

•Anode current: approx. 0.1 mA at 4 kV

Fine Beam Tube (Neon-filled) with Connector Base

The Fine Beam Tube is used for investigating the deflection of cathode rays in a uniform magnetic field produced by a pair of 300 mm Helmholtz coils. In addition, it can also be used for quantitative determination of the specific charge of an electron e/m.

Located inside a glass bulb with a neon residual gas atmosphere is an electron gun, which consists of an indirectly heated oxide cathode, Wehnelt cylinder and perforated anode. The gas atoms are ionised along the path of the electrons and a narrow, well-defined, luminescent beam is produced. Incorporated measurement marks facilitate parallax-free determination of the diameter of the circular path of the beam deflected in the magnetic field. The Fine Beam Tube is mounted on a base with coloured connectors. In order to protect the tube, a protective circuit is built into the base, which shuts off any voltage in excess of the base’s pre-set cut-off voltage. The protective circuit prevents excessive voltages from damaging the heater filament and ensures “smooth” switch-on response once the voltage is applied. Requires 0-300 DC power supply and 300 mm Helmholtz coils.

•Filament voltage: to 12 DC

•Filament current: 300 to 450 mA

•Anode voltage: 200 to 300 V

•Anode current: 0.3 mA

What is a rheostat?

In

its simplest form this is a long piece of wire wrapped around a cylinder, with connectors at either end, and

a ‘slider’ on the top.

The slider is a moving connector. You move this along the coil to change the resistance in the circuit, by effectively changing the length of wire.

If you connect the circuit wires so that the top bar of the rheostat is excluded (so connect bottom left, A, and bottom right, B, terminals) the current will pass through all the coil, and you will have maximum resistance.

If you connect either end of the rheostat into the circuit (bottom left, A to top right, C) the current will pass through the coil and out at wherever the slider is, and on to the rest of the circuit (via the bar and terminal C). Moving the slider to make the length shorter will decrease the resistance in the circuit, and vice versa.

Note: The rheostat will work either way round. If it’s wired the opposite way then moving the slider along to seemingly increase the length, will actually decrease the turns and thus resistance.

Making Rockets!

Making rockets is a fun and visually engaging activity that can cover physics and chemistry topics and is an excellent opportunity for applied thinking, creative working, and teamwork, as well as some healthy competition!

Scan to read our rocket content

There are a number of different rocket activities that can easily be done in schools. Starting small are film canister pop rockets, and moving on to air propelled rockets which use air pressure to launch paper rockets. A popular activity is rockets propelled with water, and here the commercial Water Rokit is one of the most popular choices. Once launched these can reach heights of up to 100 ft (over 30 m) using water pressure as the propellant.

Here’s where Newton’s 3rd law comes to into effect. This law states that whenever two bodies interact, the forces they exert on each other are equal and opposite. In the Water Rokit, blasting out water under pressure propels the rocket upward. Forcing the water downwards creates an equal force upwards. This is similar to how a space rocket’s fuel and oxygen mixture generates thrust: the gases are pushed out of the bottom of the rocket with such force, that the rocket is propelled upwards at great speed.

To keep the Water Rokit flying straight up, fins are added to the bottom. These fins act to counteract the sideways motion of the rocket caused by the uncontrolled nature of high-pressure water leaving the bottle.

If the rocket starts to drift, the air striking the fins pushes it back on track. Strong gusts can still overcome the stabilising effect of the fins, so it is always worth checking the weather before launch day! Like all rocket practicals, the Water Rokit meets the physics forces requirement in the curriculum.

Coming soon is the Water Rokit logger, to measure the rocket’s height and acceleration.

This data is fed back to a computer, allowing students to graph the flight and link it to the speed/time/distance part of the physics specification, and Newton’s second law: Force = mass x acceleration.

Frederiksen Spark Detector

The Alpha particle Spark Detector from Frederiksen has been developed to enable visualization of alpha particles. The apparatus can be likened to a GM tube, but using atmospheric air instead of the diluted quenching gas in the tube.

When alpha particles ionize the air in the spark gap of the detector, bright sparks can be both seen and heard. The apparatus incorporates a transparent lid, which allows clear observation of the sparks.

The detector requires connection to safe high voltage (EHT) power supply with voltage range of 0-5 kV or 0-6 kV. The apparatus can be safely used directly on bench top or table and includes a removable threaded steel rod for mounting the unit on a radioactivity bench (RA95610) or squat retort base with thumbscrew (ST96274).

•Gives clearly visible and audible response to alpha radiation

•Demonstrates the ionization of air by alpha particles

•Detects alpha radiation from radioactive minerals or radioactive sources

•Allows study of range in air shielding by different materials

Alga Gro Concentrate 20 mL

Alga-Gro is a sterile enrichment for adding to fresh or saltwater to produce an almost universal algal medium. We recommend using Alga-Gro for culturing Anabaena, Chlorella, Dunaliella, Scenedesmus and Volvox. Each 20 mL tube makes one litre of medium. How to use: For Alga-Gro Freshwater Medium: add 1 tube of Alga-Grow to 1 litre of bottled mineral water. Transfer to suitable sterile containers (autoclaved at 15 psi for 15 minutes) and cover with foil to exclude dust. Add algae when cool. For Alga-Gro Saltwater Medium: add 1 tube of Alga-Grow to 1 litre of sterile natural seawater or sterile artificial sea water (autoclaved at 15psi for 15 minutes). Transfer to suitable sterile containers and cover with foil to exclude dust. Add algae when cool. It is important not to overdilute your algae as this may allow any contaminant algae to grow and compete for nutrients. Therefore, we advise starting your culture with no more than 250 mL growth medium per large algae jar, or 100 mL for a small algae jar. Place this near to a light source. If your algae settles to the bottom then it should be agitated once per day by swirling, or an aquarium pump to continuously agitate it. Allow the algae to thicken before adding more medium.
