Business in Vancouver

It secured a federal government green light earlier this year after persevering through a decade-long planning and approval process, but the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s ambitious $3 5 billion container cargo handling expansion project at Roberts Bank continues to draw fire from environmentalists, organized labour and other critics.

The latest anti-Terminal 2 rally, organized and endorsed by 14 organizations including the BC General Employees’ Union, International Longshore and Warehouse Union (Canada), the Georgia Strait Alliance and the Wilderness Committee, was staged June 14 at the Port of Vancouver’s Crab Park at Portside. Its overriding theme, according to Rob Ashton, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (Canada), was unity in opposition to a project that the speakers said would destroy an invaluable and irreplaceable marine estuary

environment and eliminate thousands of high-paying port jobs.

Concerns over the potential environmental toll from Terminal 2’s construction and operation were delivered by Rueben George, from the Tsleil-Waututh Nation; David Bradley, director of Birds Canada; Lucero Gonzalez, a biodiversity campaigner for the Georgia Strait Alliance; and Charlotte Dawe, a conservation and policy campaigner for the Wilderness Committee

DJ Pohl, a member of the BC General Employees’ Union, emphasized organized labour’s environmental and job elimination concerns regarding Terminal 2

Plans for the Terminal 2 port infrastructure project include doubling the size of the current 85-hectare Deltaport container terminal with offshore landfill The project received federal cabinet approval in April and can proceed subject to 370 legally binding conditions to protect the environment. It also still needs provincial government approval

The CBSA says its Metro Vancouver Marine Operations plays an important role in intercepting contraband and facilitating the free flow of legitimate trade in the Pacific Region.

CBSAannouncesdetailsoffourmethbusts

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has been very busy, including at its Tsawwassen inspection facility, with four significant seizures of methamphetamine over the last six months

The seizures amount to more than 6,330 kg of methamphetamine and were all discovered within jugs labeled as canola oil destined for export to Australia, the CBSA announced on Wednesday (June 14) during a news conference

“The safety and security of Canadians is our government’s top priority I want to thank the CBSA, the RCMP and our Australian and New Zealand law enforcement partners for their excellent work in disrupting organized crime and protecting our communities from dangerous narcotics,” said Marco Mendicino, Minister of Public Safety, in a news release.

On May 31, border officers from the Metro Vancouver District Marine Operations, Tsawwassen Container Examination Facility and Commercial Operations,

seized 180 jugs containing a total of 2,898 kg of liquid methamphetamine

The liquid drug can be converted into huge amounts of powder or crystal methamphetamine

On May 3, border officers at the Tsawwassen facility seized 19 jugs containing a total of 325 12 kg of liquid methamphetamine.

Also at the Tsawwassen facility, on Jan 22, officers seized 180 jugs containing a total of 2,907 kg of liquid methamphetamine The CBSA said that seizure, enough to fill 35 large suit-

cases, is the CBSA’s largest methamphetamine seizure to date.

On Dec 13, 2022, border officers from the Metro Vancouver District Marine Operations, Burnaby Container Examination Facility and Commercial Operations, seized 40 jugs containing a total of 204 30 kg of crystal methamphetamine.

“These significant seizures can be attributed to the collaboration of multiple CBSA units, including teams in the Metro Vancouver District and Pacific Region Intelligence Section, along with

the collaboration and contributions from our domestic and international law enforcement partners such as the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Border Service, the New Zealand Police and Customs Service,” the CBSA said. “The investigation of these seizures was referred to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in British Columbia.”

Having begun operations in 2019, the stateof-the-art Tsawwassen inspection facility for the CBSA, located near Deltaport on Tsawwassen

First Nations lands, was to increase security and the examination capacity for goods arriving at marine ports of entry, primarily Deltaport and Fraser Surrey Docks. Previously, all containers identified as requiring further examination had to be trucked to the inspection facility in Burnaby.

The 55,000-squarefoot Tsawwassen facility is double in size to the one in Burnaby and is designed to not only increase the number of containers examined but also reduce the average wait times

AnotherbigstepforGeorgeMasseyTunnelreplacement

It may be seven years away, but the replacement of the aging George Massey Tunnel has moved a step closer to reality.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure on Wednesday announced that a request for qualifications has been issued to replace the underwater crossing with a new eightlane, toll-free immersed tube tunnel.

“This is a major milestone in the project to replace the George Massey Tunnel,” said Minister Rob Fleming in a news release “We are making significant progress on this important project that will improve travel times and transit options for people who live on both sides of the Fraser River.”

Still needing to complete an environmental assessment, construction of the new tunnel is scheduled for completion in 2030

The government said following the request for qualifications, it will issue a request for proposals from a shortlist of qualified teams to select a single pro-

ponent to move forward in the procurement process. Concurrently, the project is progressing through the province’s environmental assessment process. Corridor improvements including construction of a new five-lane Steveston Interchange are already underway.

The new crossing will be an eight-lane immersed tube tunnel with three general-purpose travel lanes and one dedicated transit lane in each direction The new tunnel will have bike and pedestrian crossings to support active transportation options in the region, but no dedicated lane for future rapid transit.

The project also includes replacing the existing Deas Slough Bridge as well as the addition of a southbound general-purpose lane on Highway 99 between Westminster Highway in Richmond and Highway 17 in Delta.

The estimated cost of the George Massey Crossing immersed tube tunnel is approximately $4.15 billion, according to the ministry

As far as the roadway improvements on the Delta side of the river, the Ministry recently told the Optimist that measures were underway to address

safety concerns regarding the ongoing Highway 99 upgrade at an exit from Ladner Trunk Road.

The merge lane was ripped up and construction pilons were forcing drivers onto the highway more immediately, or to stop

It was expected that paving in the area will be completed by the end of June, the ministry noted, adding that the temporary yield will be removed at that time, and the full ramp will provide additional space for merging

Meanwhile, the City of Delta is still waiting for word if a second exit out of Ladner will be included in the project. Council earlier this year got some

potentially good news during a presentation by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Transportation Investment Corporation.

Executive director Peter Argast said that while an overpass connecting River Road is not within the current scope, the province may be willing to consider the addition once the government has an idea of how much federal funding will be made available.

Delta is encouraged to work with the ministry on a potential overpass project, to ensure critical planning is undertaken if there is an opportunity to revamp the overall tunnel replacement program, he added.

The Ladner Village Market will have new operators starting in 2024.

Last week the City of Delta announced that it has entered into an agreement with Ladner Village Market Ltd to assume the assets and operation of the Ladner Village Market during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

The City of Delta said it recognizes the important role that the Market plays in the community as a gathering space for connection, bringing together individuals of all ages and interests from across Delta and neighbouring cities, all while supporting tourism, local businesses, and Delta’s agricultural and artisan communities

“The Ladner Village Market has been an integral part of Ladner Village for 27 years and synonymous with summer in Delta,” said the Ladner Village Market managers in a news release “Our team approached the city to take over upon our retirement, knowing the leadership at Delta will honour the history of the Market and help it to flourish into the future.

“Mayor Harvie and members of council appreciate the values of the Market and we believe they will continue to uphold these values The Ladner Village Market has been a training ground for youth and a springboard for many successful entrepreneurs in our community. We look forward to seeing this continue at the Market in 2024 and beyond.”

This year the city will work with the owners of Ladner Village Market Ltd to ensure vendors and patrons will

continue to enjoy the market as always, while preparing for a smooth transition to Delta in November. Delta plans to build on the success and history of the Market in Ladner and will prioritize a seamless transition to benefit all those who come to this incredible community event.

“We are so fortunate in Delta to have such an eclectic and vibrant local market,” added Mayor George Harvie. “I want to thank the McKnight family and Jan Salvador for their dedication to and passion for making the Ladner Village Market such an integral summer event in our community. The local talent we have in our agricultural and artisan communities shine bright at the Market each year and I am pleased that the City of Delta can play a role in continuing to grow the Market for our community to enjoy.”

Two of the three suspects were found to be breaching undertaking conditions from prior criminal offences currently before the courts.”

A 32-year-old man from Edmonton has been released on an undertaking. Recommended charges include one count of theft under $5,000, one count of possession of stolen property, and one count of failing to comply with an undertaking

A 31-year-old woman from Edmonton has been released on an undertaking. Recommended charges include two counts of theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property, and one count of failing to comply with an undertaking.

A third suspect, a 30-year-old man from Surrey was released on an undertaking with a charge recommendation of one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of possession of stolen property.

Identities of the accused will not be released until charge approval has been completed by BC Prosecution Services.

The vehicle used during the theft, the tools, and the stolen property have been seized.

Whatweare doingnowis notworking

Editor’s Note

The opioid crisis continues to take lives at an alarming rate

On Monday, a statement from the BC Coroners Service says that in May, 176 deaths have pushed the total to 1,018 people who have died in the first five months of 2023 due to an illicit drug overdose.

Chief coroner Lisa Lapointe went on to say that illicit drug toxicity is now the leading cause of death in this province for people between the ages of 10 to 59 This grim statistic now surpasses homicides, suicides, accidents and natural diseases combined.

Earlier this month, Glacier Media and its team of journalists throughout the province presented an in-depth feature series of articles about B.C.’s opioid crisis.

The stories talked about who is dying, families whose lives have been shattered by those deaths, what governments are doing about the issue and what average people think about those efforts To read all our stories go to the Optimist website (www delta-optimist com) and look under the news tab on the top left hand corner of the website

Have you heard, Canada’s population surpassed 40 million last week We are growing faster than ever before.

With a low birth rate and a sluggish immigration process it’s actually a surprising accomplishment.

The opioid crisis is a tragedy that’s touched every part of the province.

We’re not immune here in Delta. We have chronicled over the past couple of years our own stories of addiction and tragedy and the steps that our local government officials are trying to implement to stop this crisis.

Greater minds than ours have pondered what to do about the worsening crisis.

It’s a complex problem that defies easy solutions – here and all over both Canada and the U S

Some of us are celebrating, others are not, because population growth in our communities adds to the pressure on our low housing supply Demand goes up and so does the price.

My husband employs two Ukrainian refugees, who with their wives and children, plan to stay here once the war is over.

we need workers We can not sustain our quality of life without more people here to support our economy.

referring to South Delta, they must be referring to North Delta

South Delta is not growing. We are experiencing stagnant growth, mainly because there is a desperate shortage of housing in Ladner and Tsawwassen, both affordable and unaffordable.

It’s a catch-22, population growth is dependent on housing supply If we don’t have supply, no one will come

Like so many immigrants, they arrived in Vancouver with skills we desperately need, but they had to be housed and require intensive family services.

It’s a burden, but it’s also a necessary burden because

The provincial government recently released a naughty list of municipalities who must increase their production of mixed housing such as townhomes, condos and below market housing.

Delta is on that list because the housing ministry believes we are a municipality that is seeing growth. Excuse me, they can’t be

The naughty list feels like a shaming tool. We don’t need lists, we need incentives to encourage developers to build mixed housing for people who work in all cross sections of society.

This is such a beautiful part of the Lower Mainland to live, but in order for us to prosper we need more people to move here Let’s build more and embrace population growth, whether it’s newborns or newcomers

Forcingdensityincreasesisa misguidedapproach

Editor:

The provincial government has placed Delta on their naughty list for not increasing housing

It appears that different arms of the government are not talking to each other.

We hear about the major problems plaguing Surrey Memorial Hospital where very long wait times are occurring for immediately required procedures Staff are on the verge of collapse. This is being ignored by the direction taken by Premier Eby and Delta North MLA Ravi Khalon in forcing Delta to increase density.

They disregard the major negative effects of their proposals and turn a blind eye to the root

cause of the problems with our hospitals. This is irresponsible densification that even now cannot handle existing facility infrastructure.

The residents of Delta rely heavily on Surrey Memorial for most surgical procedures.

Delta Hospital transfers patients to Surrey for procedures not available at Delta. Adding density, as proposed, is a narrow vision of attempting to provide what is referred to as affordable housing with serious negative consequences in other areas

The direction of city council, in their push to increase density, especially in North Delta, results in exceeding and going far beyond the

limits of existing infrastructure in all areas where there is no room to expand. These projects only exacerbate the growing problems of access to our hospitals and other infrastructure

We strongly urge Delta mayor and council not to accept, be agreeable to, or be intimidated by this provincial government direction and we urge you to take the provincial government to task

We also ask the premier and Minister Kahlon to look seriously at what they are attempting to do You cannot force building for people without having the proper infrastructure to support them.

In defence of bike lanes

Editor:

Every time a proposed bike lane is brought forth it is met with intense vitriol and absolute dismay. How could they give away the precious parking when it is already so tight?

I was born in Ladner and spent my youth biking around the farm town. Moved to Vancouver as a young adult and back to Ladner after having my son. We love to bike around, bike to Barnside, bike to Ladner Harbour Park, bike to East Ladner and say hi to the cows.

One thing stood out to me in all this time biking Ladner, it is way more dangerous to bike here then is it in Vancouver.

Even though, yes, we have less traffic, we have far less dedicated bike lanes Simply peddling from the library to Ladner Leisure Centre you are faced with the fact that you have to share Arthur Drive with cars who do not want you there. I have been honked at and yelled at more times than I can count

Meanwhile, proposed cycling improvements along 44th Ave between Arthur Drive and 57th St. are met with fierce opposition

Delta has an opportunity to connect the downtown core to Deas Island Park, connect it to the mall and the ferry terminal.

One can look to Victoria where the Lochside trail provides a separate, dedicated bike path connecting the ferry to Victoria Here on our side? You share the highway from the ferry then once again Arthur Drive with the cars. Biking from Ladner to Tsawwassen Mills? Almost completely out of the question.

As the generation that grew up here gets older, and more and more rely on their cars I would ask them to consider whether they want a safe and ‘bikeable’ town for their kids and young people, if they want to retain the ‘small town’ culture that makes Ladner so special.

The “housing” density issue is nothing more than a canard to create bigger and bigger profits for land speculators and land developers

The great political clarion call for “higher density” omits one very important factor: increasing density, increases land values

As one increases density, one increases land values and when one increases land values, one increases property assess-

ments When property assessment increases so do taxes and when taxes are increased so do rents and leases.

The big problem for all politicians is that they have become wedded to big budgets, needing ever higher taxes, yet any sort of thrift is ignored as the political thought is taxpayers have very deep pockets to pay for exorbitant tax increases.

In real terms, increasing density, increases poverty and homeless-

ness, as those on marginal incomes cannot afford to pay for housing.

Politicians do not care and never had, as they can hire (on the taxpayer’s dime) communication companies, full of expensive spin doctors to provide media friendly 10-second sound bites

As the land speculators and land developers are the major players for reelecting politicians, don’t expect any real change, ever!

Mayor’s comments not appropriate

Editor:

Re: article on mobility parking signage (Optimist, June 15)

I have issues with this article, most specifically the comment from Mayor George Harvie, “It is infuriating to see people who are able bodied using mobility passes for their vehicles It bothers me when I see someone bounce out of their car and they have taken a handicapped spot, it’s

just total ignorance”

This is so deeply offensive as a person who suffers from an invisible disability that leaves me in constant pain and needing one of these passes.

While we may appear able bodied, our struggles are just as valid as someone who uses a mobility device

It is time to educate yourself on invisible disability, such as MS, Lupas, Rheumatoid

disease, artificial limbs, chronic fatigue, or people living with chronic pain or cancer.

There are many valid reasons for having a pass. The amount of confrontations I have been involved in by uneducated people is ridiculous and scary

Please educate yourself and don’t assume that everyone is misusing the spots

Vandalism images can be triggering

Editor:

Here’s a thought: please pay better attention to how you present articles in your newspaper relating to the vandalism of Pride flags in Ladner

Graphic images of the beautiful flags, flags that are flown to symbolize inclusion and celebration, being splashed with ugly blotches of paint can be retraumatizing to people directly impacted

How about a story instead focused on the love, joy, acceptance and resiliency that abounds within the Pride community? Love wins (and it’s a lot more fun)

A wonderful day at public works open house

SANDOR GYARMATI

The BC Community Bat Program is holding bat counts this June

Undertaking colony reports and using volunteer assistance for the citizen-science initiative, including one earlier this week in Delta, residents are counting bats at local roost sites

The initiative annually monitors bat populations in locations such as abandoned houses, barns, church steeples, as well as currently occupied structures, which can provide a summer home to female bats and their young

“Monitoring these ‘maternity colonies’ can give biologists a good idea of how bat populations in an area are doing from year to year. With the occurrence of White-nose Syndrome in North America, monitoring these colonies is more important than ever, ” the organization explains on its website

The highly-infectious fungus that causes the syndrome in bats has been detected in bat guano in the Grand Forks area this year. The province has been monitoring for its arrival since the fungus first appeared on the west coast of the United States in 2016.

The province notes that the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship is working with multiple partners to implement enhanced surveillance for the disease, as well as reduce threats to bat habitat

The Optimist a few weeks ago weeks ago reported that Metro Vancouver is hoping measures can protect the bat colony living in an historic Delta house from White-nose Syndrome.

Located at Deas Island Regional Park, the Burvilla House, also known as the Burr Heritage House, is home to around 3,000 bats, mostly Yuma bats and little brown bats, the largest nursery colony of

bats in B C

They rely on the habitat at the regional park and the surrounding area for food, mainly insects and thousands of mosquitoes.

Nine species have been detected in the house and the colony is monitored by Metro Vancouver and the South Coast Bat Society

The bats have been in the house for around 20 years but monitoring increased in 2016 after it was found the colony grew significantly in the attic.

Markus Merkens, Natural Resource Management Specialist for Metro Vancouver, told the Optimist that bat colonies within regional parks have been monitored for a number of years, and this year the regional district will once again issue a permit to the BC Community Bat Program to monitor and to collect guano from known colonies within the regional parks system, including at Deas Island Regional Park.

The guano will be sent to a lab for analysis to confirm species identification and detect the presence of Whitenose Syndrome related pathogens, he said, adding that monitoring for the syndrome is the first step in managing its impact.

Built in 1905, Burvilla was the first house to receive heritage designation from the city in 1982. It would be moved from its original location at the corner of River Road and 62B Street to Deas Island for restoration and preservation.

Inventories need rebuilding, because life-saving contributions don’t keep long

Most Canadians are polite. They don’t like to go where they’re not asked. Unless they receive an invitation, they usually don’t attend.

Canadians are being asked now however, directly, to book an appointment at blood.ca, and to come into a clinic and give blood.

In Delta, there are 368 appointments available from now until the end of August Those are outstanding invitations where people are being asked to book online and then come in and donate.

You can also drop into several local clinics this summer on July 17 and Aug 14 at the Ladner Community Centre, on Aug 19 at South Delta Secondary and the Baitur Rahman Mosque in North Delta on Aug 12.

According to Canadian Blood Services, almost half of the people in a recent survey they conducted said they didn’t donate – because they were waiting to be asked.

This week is National Blood Donor Week and to mark the occasion, more than 60 landmarks across Canada will be lit red in the Shine a Light Campaign to remind people that blood and plasma are needed daily.

Mayors are also invited to join in the mayoral challenge and Delta

Mayor George Harvie will be posting about the week on social media

Craig Nielsen, community development manager, said many people think that someone else is donating.

“Well, nobody else is stepping up and taking care of it, so we need everyone that’s eligible to come to donate,” he said.

The need goes on all year for the vital commodity that can only be stored 42 days

“Like a carton of milk in your fridge, it will expire and need to be replaced,” Nielsen said.

He said that major events such as weather, forest fires and natural disasters are affecting indirectly the number of people who show up at clinics, but the largest factor continuing to affect donations is the lingering effect of the pandemic.

“Over the course of the pandemic, donor behaviour has changed. We are seeing fewer people coming out and donating regularly,” said Nielsen.

During the pandemic, many people just got used to staying home or working from home, which means they just don’t get out as much

According to Canadian Blood Services, more than 150,000 appointments across Canada need to be filled this summer

“Everyone is welcome there. A great community thing,” said Nielsen.

Tsawwassenofficebuilding plantogotopublichearing

SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta council on Monday (June 19) gave preliminary approval for an application to build a 3.5-storey office building in Tsawwassen

Requiring an Official Community Plan (OCP) amendment and involving two properties, the proposal at the corner of 12th Avenue and 53A Street will go to a public hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.

The 49,977-square-foot site currently contains a two-storey commercial building on the property at 5360 12 Ave. that would be demolished, while the property at 1170 53A St is vacant There is also a BC Hydro statutory right-ofway along the rear portion of the site

For the 12th Avenue property, the development proposal is consistent with the commercial land use designation and the property is included in the Tsawwassen Town Centre Development Permit Area However, for the 53A

Street property, the development proposal is inconsistent with the singlefamily residential land use designation.

The developable portion of the site would front 53A Street, while the rear portion of the site is encumbered by the right-of-way

The owners have requested the amendments to allow commercial development on a larger site to create a viable development project that would otherwise not be possible on the individual lots, which are both encumbered by the right-of-way, a staff report notes.

The report also notes that while the commercial building would be different in character than the lower density houses in the area, the scale, size and height would be comparable to other three and four-storey buildings in and near the town centre along 54A and 55 streets.

Vehicle access to the underground parking area would be from 53A Street and the at-grade parking would be from 12th Avenue

Community still struggling, needs workers

PHIL MELNYCHUK

Contributing Writer

Point Roberts resident Brian Calder is going right to the top seeking help with the labour shortage in the U.S. territory, just south of Tsawwassen

Calder fired off a letter this week to U.S. President Joe Biden and state legislators, asking

for the federal government to restore a previous arrangement from more than a decade ago where Canadian workers were allowed to work part-time service sector jobs in Point Roberts without having to get a work permit Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also got a copy of the letter.

“This program worked flawlessly for years, but was arbitrarily removed without cause, seriously impacting Point Roberts’ businesses,” Calder said.

He points out the closest area from which to draw U.S. workers is from Blaine, Wash , but that requires a 40-km commute and crossing of two borders, just one way

“This is not an eco-

nomically viable option for prospective workers or for local businesses,” he added

He said employees making $20 an hour can’t find reasonable places to rent in Point Roberts because some suites have been converted to AirBnB.

And even though the effects from the pandemic continue to depress visitor numbers, they still need workers

“We need right now … even with our reduced numbers, we could use 60 workers” he said.

Ali Hayton, who runs Point Roberts International Marketplace, said she’s had to reduce hours because of a worker shortage and could hire 15 employees

“Right now, we ’ re

closed 42 hours a week that we should be open, ” Hayton said.

She’s been working with elected officials to see if there’s a way to get an exemption to the visa requirement

“It’s just been a problem because since COVID started … all of the people that were eligible to work, kind of went the other way, ” she said.

At the Point to Point Parcel Service, manager/ owner Beth Calder said she could hire at least two more people. During the pandemic, eight staff were laid off

Now, only four or five staff work there. She’s also had to reduce hours because of staff shortages.

Businesses are now competing for work-

ers and raising their wages, which is causing some to fail, while many Canadians would like to work in Point Roberts given the exchange rate, she said

At the Bald Eagle Golf Club, maintenance supervisor Rick Hoole could use between eight to 12 people, everyone from grass cutters to irrigation and spray technicians and mechanics. There’s no date for when the golf course will reopen.

The effects of the pandemic continue to be felt in lower visitor numbers crossing the border

In his letter, Calder said that in April 2018, about 134,000 people crossed the border into Point Roberts. In April 2023, the number of crossings was about 72,000.

All Stanley Tromp wants is some basic shelter so passengers at the BC Ferries Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay terminals waiting to catch the bus can do so without getting blasted by the weather

But so far in his sixmonth campaign, it looks like passengers will have to line up exposed to the elements for sometime yet

“The thing is so cheap and easy, it’s astonishing that they haven’t done it,” said Tromp who lives in Vancouver and for 35 years has been making regular trips to Swartz Bay, where he’d also like to see such shelters “It’s elementary decency to take care of people. The elderly (will be) soaked in cold rain for 20 minutes, the effects on their health and so on, it’s so basic. It’s not rocket science. ”

He’s proposing linear two-by-30-metre shelters at bus loading bays that will block out the sun ’ s rays.

He’d even settle for a temporary, tent-type structure, just to provide some shade.

Currently, there is some shelter for pedestrians, but it’s too small and not close to the bus stop, meaning anyone using that shelter could lose their place in line The same goes for waiting inside the terminal

Last month, Tromp wrote a letter to BC Ferries president Nicolas Jimenez, but he was asking the company about the shelters months prior

Tromp said last December, he had to wait in the pouring rain with about 100 others for at least 20 minutes, in order to catch the bus.

He also asks why bus and ferry schedules are not better coordinated and why people can’t wait inside the bus while it’s awaiting its departure time. Tromp though was told by BC Ferries that stationary buses are closed to passengers in order to give drivers time for a break.

If other terminals have the same problem, they should also get shelters, he added.

He’s talked to several officials within BC Ferries but they keep passing the buck

“They don’t want to deal with it. They don’t

really care They’d like to avoid it,” he said.

Tromp plans on launching an online petition and then presenting the results to Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Rob Fleming

However, there may

be some reason for optimism, though there are no firm plans

BC Ferries public affairs executive director Deborah Marshall said the company is “exploring options,” for bus shelters at its major terminals

FourWinds,Barnsidewinnationalawards

Two Delta breweries have shown they can brew with the best in all of Canada after earning a total of four awards at the Canadian Brewing Awards Conference earlier this month in Halifax.

Four Winds Brewing and Barnside Brewing competed against more than 2,100 of the best beers in the nation of beer-drinking hosers

Barnside Brewing won a silver medal in the barley-wine-style category for its Batch No 200 Estate Barley Wine ale.

Four Winds Brewing won silver in the North American-style-paleale category for its Four Winds Pale Ale.

That beer is one of the first they ever brewed a decade ago and is a tribute to the beginnings of craft beer in B C The beer is on tap in all Cactus Club restaurants

Adam Mills, with Four Winds, said the brewery has won in the past but with recent growth in craft beer across the country, the competition has been tougher as hundreds of new breweries come on line

Four Winds just

marked its 10th year in business on June 1.

“Ten years into our existence, winning three awards in one year is great, tremendous, very happy with it,” Mills said. “I think to be recognized by your peers and professional judges is a great thing”

Four Winds also claimed a bronze medal in the American-styleIPA category for its beer labeled Greg, named after the company ’ s cofounder, Greg Mills.

Greg died in 2020 and his sons named the beer in his honour.

Underneath the label that bears his name it reads, “In Loving Memory.”

“Greg is the type of beer that Greg would have enjoyed while watching another West Coast sunset This one ’ s for you, Dad!” it says on the beer can

Four Winds won another bronze medal in the session ales category with its La Maison beer.

For Barnside Brewing, it’s been a one-two-three medalling performance since the farm brewery opened in January 2020, where almost 40 people

now work The brewery, on 60th Avenue, grows 90 per cent of its ingredients, including its own hops and barley, on farmland settled a century ago

In 2020, Barnside earned a silver for its imperial oatmeal stout and in 2021, earned a bronze for its Honeycomb Pale Ale.

“We’re very excited about it Our Batch 200 Barley Wine was sort of a release for our third anniversary We made it before our second anniversary, then barrel aged it for 13 months in anticipation of a delightful beer, and we ’ re happy it got silver,” said consumer engagement coordinator

Barley wine ale is considered a strong ale and similar to a wine and showcases the malt flavours instead of the hops The ale, made completely from their own ingredients grown on the farm, is aged for 13 months in blackberry brandy barrels.

“So it makes it almost … ice-wine like,” adding it’s not hoppy and has a toffee flavour to it, Witter said.

“Each year, we ’ ve been fortunate enough to win a Canadian Brewing award So we ’ re getting a little bit of recognition here … for having Delta as a great spot”

Nearly 800 craft brewers, beer professionals, suppliers and industry experts attended the Canadian Brewing Awards Conference, now in its 21st year. A total of 2,171 submissions were received from more than 400 breweries from across Canada, coast to coast.

LIFESTYLES

Delta-raisedmusicianwantstodisruptdigitalstreaming

A Toronto musician with Delta roots wants to disrupt digital streaming and give indie artists a bigger slice of the pie when their tunes zip around the world on laptops and mobiles.

Ryder Havdale, a graduate of South Delta Secondary, has been making music, recording and managing artists for 20 years and currently tours with the band Broken Social Scene

Two years ago, he also developed a new app called Helios, which is now ready for a free soft launch of the beta version, today, June 22.

“Essentially, it’s by creators, for creators,” he said

Currently with music-streaming services, artists get paid about half a cent every time one of their songs is streamed online, with algorithms geared to favour the big artists

He says that if an individual subscriber is listening to 450 songs a month and artists are paid half a cent every time their song is played, the streaming company is paying out about $2 25 a month in royalties to artists or rights holders (Havdale

said that Spotify claims that users listen to 25 hours of music a month, which works out to 457 songs ) But what happens to the remainder of the $10 monthly subscription fee most streaming services charge?

One of his more popular tunes, Toyko, hit a million streams in 2020

“I had to ask, did we get paid for that?”

He checked and found that the artist’s label got $2,000 while he split the other $2,000 between himself and another producer

But with Havdale’s Helios, for a $10 monthly subscription fee, artists will get 70 per cent of that fee, divided by the number of

tunes the subscriber streams in a month. The remainder, 30 per cent of that $10, goes to Helios

“It’s actually going to those artists you ’ ve been listening to,” he said.

Helios follows a per-user engagement model Of the $10 monthly subscription, with Helios taking 30 per cent, the remaining $7 will go to artists, based on the content users engage with. A like, a share, comments, and listens all will bring in revenue

Helios offers a “fremium” package where subscriptions are free but there are advertisements. Another package costs $10 a month.

“Essentially, we ’ re bringing social into music It’s like an Instagram feed,” he said. Artists can connect directly with their fans and they can see what they’re making on their phones.

“We’ve built a social-music streaming platform to compete against Spotify and Instagram, really,” Havdale said. “Basically, we ’ re creating tools for users at a space where they can get paid on their phone, on the app, with full transparency and get paid fairly”

Happy Birthday Lorraine!

INGRID ABBOTT

Contributing Writer

Lorraine McKinnon

lives in her Ladner bungalow with the exception of her colourful companion, a love bird named ‘Pete’

She has owned several love birds over the years named Pete, so she decided to call this one ‘Repeat’

“A sense of humour is the key to a long life,” said McKinnon

And what a long life she’s had. Today (June 22) is her 100th birthday.

Born in 1923 she is the descendant of one of the original pioneer farming families

in South Delta, the Guichon’s.

Her grandfather Laurent Guichon immigrated from France, and in 1868 with his wife Peronne, bought 1,100 acres of land and created a Delta farmstead

They built a successful farm on the Fraser River Delta with cattle and oats and had 10 children Eventually the farm was divided amongst the siblings and McKinnon’s father Felix inherited the parcel at the far end of 41B street where she grew up.

One of McKinnon’s happiest memories is threshing day in the fall when the farm was

bursting with activity

With her three siblings she would slide down the bulging sacks of grain at dusk.

She remembers long walks to Canoe Pass Elementary, and ferry rides to the mainland for shopping and visiting family.

While the Guichon’s were mostly shielded from the war, she recalls being bused to the Boundary Bay Airport with other young women to dance with the airmen who lived at the Wireless Station

She met her husband Scott at a dance hall in Ladner village. They raised five children in a big house on 46A Street

and McKinnon loved working as a school secretary at Canoe Pass.

To call her a super senior is an understatement She travels regularly and will be attending a wedding in Montreal soon

She’s active in her church and makes pillows for the Delta Hospital Auxiliary pillow pal program Lately her biggest dilemma is finding a supply of new jigsaw puzzles

Since the pandemic she’s become obsessed with puzzels

She eats three meals a day, sleeps well, and is lucky to have a loving family who checks in on her every day Plus she

gets as many cuddles as she can from Pete.

McKinnon can be proud of the huge contribution her family has made to our community. Five generations of farming, plus a new generation of Guichon’s that have gone into local politics and become entrepreneurs

One hundred twenty of her nearest and dearest will celebrate in her backyard this weekend. There will be lots of laughs as the Guichon’s are a close knit family who recognize the special place this centenarian has in our local history.

Happy Birthday

Whether as an all-star pro hockey player or as a busy grandfather, Darryl Sittler believes that to get the most out of life, you need to look after yourself.

Happy Pride, Delta!

Delta Pride Society is committed to advocate for, support, encourage and celebrate our 2SLGBTQ+ community, neighbours and allies.

This year we are excited to be celebrating our sixth birthday and our fifth annual Delta Pride Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 20 from 11 a m to 3 p m at Memorial Park in Ladner

We are incredibly grateful to live in the city of Delta where the bar is set high for acceptance and inclusion of all community members – especially our minority groups

We are thankful for the leadership of Mayor George Harvie and council We are also thankful for City Manager Sean McGill and Delta staff for their work on the Delta Pride

street banners and their supporting educational videos on acceptance, courage, love and Pride and the city’s Ally Pin Campaign

Now more than ever, allyship is needed.

These are incredibly difficult days for the Pride community as we see in the States and more specifically, right here at home When minority groups are suffering, allies must step up and do the heavy lifting Allies must continually listen and educate themselves, understand their priviledge, then actively come alongside the 2SLGBTQ+ community, share their stories, educate others in workspaces, social groups, within the home. Fighting for human rights for this beautiful and diverse com-

munity is imperative We all desire to freely live, work, play and love!

June is both Pride Month and Indigenous History Month!

It is important to recognize that Two Spirit people were revered and held a place of honour in pre-colonial times. We recognize the importance of uplifting and validating their

critical role in their cultures today

We recognize the power in the work of the Black trans community at Stonewall including activism here in Canada. Black trans activists have always been at the forefront in fighting for human rights for the community. Black trans women are at an inordinately higher risk of being murdered, which we see in the devastating statistics of this year alone We honour them and we progress forward for them. We celebrate the many members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community who have made great strides forward and we are committed to the work ahead

To the Pride community members and their loved ones - we see you, we are here for

you and we love you! Know you are never alone and you are perfect as you are. Look to the good. Seek out safe, supportive spaces Acknowledge the beauty around you and within you. Hope always!

A special thank you to the Optimist for this year ’ s Pride Section! We are grateful for your work in promoting awareness of the Pride Community who are an integral part of our community as a whole!

Jenn Curll said it feels like they are still coming out all these years later, because of how the language around sexual and gender identities is always evolving Curll, who currently identifies as pansexual, said that they knew they weren’t “just straight” around age 15, but growing up in Ladner, there wasn’t any queer scene to be a part of

“It’s nobody’s fault, but there just wasn’t a community for me to go and be able to talk to people who were like me, so I didn’t even know how to describe [myself].”

They decided at age 38 it was time to explore their queerness and find a community, and ended up attending a pride night at a drag show with their cousin in 2018

“I saw my first drag king and I did not know that those existed…I saw this drag king on stage and I was like ‘I need to

Profile: Carol Johnson

KATIE LAWRENCEBALLOCH

Some homework for her sexuality and scriptures course two years ago ended up leading Carol Johnson down a path that had never crossed her mind before.

The reading made some unexplained moments in her past click together and helped her come to the realization that she was bisexual.

“I think you ’ re never too old to learn more about yourself and I’ve come to appreciate the queer community so much,” said Johnson.

All Johnson had been taught growing up in a conservative church environment was that “ gay people are sinful, that [it was] sinful to be in a homosexual relationship,” so she said she never even had a chance to think about being queer

She started attending a different church with

do this’” , Curll said. “They were just dancing and being sexy and confident and gender-bending. I was so gobsmacked”

A few months later, they were playing around with some looks and started going out in drag - putting on makeup and a glitter beard, and styling themselves in a more masculine way It led to the feeling of gender euphoria for the drag performer, whose stage name is Justin Abit.

As an adult, Curll found it hard to feel like

they belonged in the queer and drag communities, was bullied because they didn’t “[come] up through the right people” , and contemplated giving up drag all together - until a show on the PNE stage in 2021.

Meet-and-greets were still suspended at the time, due to pandemic rules, but a mom and their child peeked through the fence and asked, “Are you a woman dressed as a man? Because that’s what my child wants to do”

her future husband, Joel, when she was 18 They got married when she was 20 and they had a “ wonderful” 27-year marriage, which sadly ended when he passed away from cancer in 2019. They had three sons together, one of whom came out as queer a few years ago.

Many families in the congregation came forward, sharing that they also had a queer family member, and asked for advice and resources. That inspired Johnson and the pastors of the church to look into it becoming an openlywelcoming environment to all persons.

The provincial conference executive that oversaw their church fought against any change and after an ugly battle, all the pastors decided to resign from the church and eventually Estuary Church was born in Ladner in September 2022

“Right off the bat, we said [Estuary is] a fully

affirming church of all people and we believe that our mission is to build towards Shalom, or harmony” Johnson said, a member of the church’s leadership team

Wanting to be better informed for the betterment of the church, Johnson took the sexuality and scriptures course and unwittingly, it led to her discovering a whole new side to herself

After she came out, a friend of Johnson’s set her up on a blind date with someone who they felt she should meet.

“We just kind of hit it off and realized we have a lot of things in common, so we just started doing some outdoor activities together and we fell in love and got married,” said Johnson, adding that her kids had been “ super supportive”

The two tied the knot at Barnside Brewery in May 2022 and recently celebrated their first anniversary

“When they said ‘that’s what my kid wants to do this is the first time we saw somebody like them’ I was like ‘I get that’ , because that was me at

my show at 38, seeing somebody doing something that resonated with me my heart burst”

“The level of confidence that drag gives me; I feel like a different

person I get to be the person I want to be and I think in life, that’s something we all want, is to be able to be the person that we feel like we are inside”

SherVancouvercelebrating15years

Everyone deserves to have a safe space to be themselves and have a community around them for support when they need it.

That’s what Alex Sangha thought when he founded an online Yahoo chat group in April 2008, stirred by some high-profile deaths in the queer community. The small social welfare club that first met up in North Delta has now grown into the strong organization that Sher Vancouver has become 15 years later.

“The main purpose of Sher Vancouver is for people to get together, to not feel alone, and to have friends,” said Sangha, who identifies as gay. “I don’t want the youth who are growing up to go through and suffer in silence and have to deal and cope with the same problems I did when I was younger ”

A registered clinical social worker and counsellor, Sangha is now able to help out LGTBQIA2S+ people through Sher Vancouver The word “sher” means lion in Persian and many South Asian languages.

“A lion represents

pride, courage, strength, and bravery, which are attributes needed to come out of the closet in our community, so we felt it was a power symbol for our community,” said Sangha

Though Sher was originally formed to help queer people in the South Asian community, Sangha emphasized that they are a multicultural and diverse organization that welcomes everyone

The organization offers a number of resources, which includes a monthly queer youth support group, referrals to counsellors, a queer/queerfriendly lawyer referral

list, a podcast sharing lived experiences of a variety of peoples, and outreach workshops on topics including bullying, homophobia, and racism.

Another initiative Sher started is the Screenings in Schools program, where they visit schools to show films to students and talk to them in the classroom Sher Films’ debut documentary, Emergence: Out of the Shadows, was shown at more than 50 festivals around the world to much acclaim and won best documentary at the Vancouver International South Asian Film Festival.

Sangha and Sher

Vancouver will be celebrating their 15th anniversary at the Desi-Q Cultural Gala in July; Desi meaning South Asian and Q standing for queer

“I can’t believe it’s been 15 years, and it’s been 15 years in Delta of us supporting our community,” Sangha said

Recently, the City of Delta presented Sangha with the Difference Maker award to recognize his efforts over the last 15 years through Sher Vancouver, which he called “ an honour”

Pride picnic set for August in Memorial Park

KATIE LAWRENCEBALLOCH

Contributing Writer

Memorial Park will again play host to the annual Delta Pride Picnic, which is returning for the fifth time in six years because of overwhelming support from the community.

The event, which originally started because of a Facebook post by a mother wondering about pride events in the city to attend with her queer child, has grown exponentially since that first event in 2018

Jenn Curll, a local drag performer and a member of the Delta Pride Society’s board, grew up in Ladner and attended the first event. They were able to donate $2,500 to the Delta Pride Society to help with events like the

picnic, after winning the title of Mr Gay Vancouver in 2020 and 2021.

“In 2018, when they did their first pride picnic and I went to that, I remember sitting there… and I remember thinking, ‘This is amazing. My little community has queer space ’” , said Curll. “When I became Mr. Gay, the biggest reason I chose to [accept the title] was that I love that little picnic. I wanted to see it grow ”

Delta Pride Society board member Christa Horita Kadach is excited to see what the event has become and what it means to the Delta community.

“I think a pride event is an important and safe space in any community for bringing together community members and to come be themselves and meet

other people and allies,” she said “In Delta specifically, there have been many acts of hate and vandalism, and it just makes it much more evident that these spaces are now just more important than ever. Delta Pride’s very grateful to be able to continue to create spaces alongside the City of Delta”

This year ’ s picnic, on Sunday, Aug. 20, will have food trucks, vendors, support organizations, and a variety of performers, including a drag show and dancers.

Horita Kadach also teased that there’s going to be an extra element this year in collaboration with Four Winds Brewing

The event is open to everyone, running 11 a m to 3 p m at Memorial Park in Ladner.

DELTA PRIDE MONTH

DeltalaunchesAllypincampaign

To help celebrate Pride Month in June, the City of Delta has launched initiatives and taken steps to show that the city is a place where everyone is welcome.

Ladner Trunk Road is lined with pride flag banners, pride benches are maintained out front of municipal buildings yearround, and the progress pride flag proudly flies in front of City Hall in Ladner

Online, the City of Delta social media channels posted a video with interviews from city staff, Delta Pride Society board members, and Sher Vancouver founder Alex Sangha, all sharing messages of inclusion and the

importance of Pride

And recently, the Ally pin campaign was launched The free, rainbow pins with All and messages of safety printed on them.

Ally pins can be found at: Delta City Hall, Ladner Leisure Centre, South Delta Recreation Centre, Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre, North Delta Recreation Centre, Sungod Recreation Centre, McKee Seniors Centre, Kennedy Seniors Centre, George Mackie Library, Ladner Pioneer Library, and Tsawwassen Public Library.

Mayor George Harvie believes that all these steps are important and necessary to make Delta a place where all feel safe and comfortable.

“The fact is, the mayor and council are respon-

sible for the social fabric of our community. This is why I really believe in ensuring that everybody has a place, that everybody is welcome,” he said Harvie has also upgraded the Diversity, Inclusion, and AntiRacism Task Force to a Committee, on a one-year term The committee is made up of eight or nine hand-picked community members, and is led by councillors Dylan Kruger and Jennifer Johal

“We’re elected to represent the community, but we ’ ve all got our own blinders on based on our lived experience and we need to ensure that we have representation from all different parts of our community to ensure that we ’ re making decisions in the best way possible,” said Kruger.

Pride season at the Delta School District

Pride season at the Delta School District started on May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, with the raising of the Philly Pride Flag at the school board office in Ladner and has continued through June

In May and June, more than 500 students have attended presentations by Out in Schools, B C’s award winning 2SLGBTQIA+ education program.

“Across the district, secondary schools have been holding various Pride season activities and learning opportunities, including cross-district events open to 2SLGBTQIA+ students

and allies,” said Trevana Spilchen, SOGI coordinator for the school district “Huge thanks to all the staff and students who have participated in and organized events designed to welcome and include genderqueer students and allies such as raffles, trivia and SOGI support”

Although Pride season has been fully embraced by schools in Delta, there is concern about the recent rise in antiSOGI rhetoric from various groups throughout Canada, specifically those in B.C. and Delta.

“There is an unprecedented level of organized hate that is specifically targeting SOGI education,” said Spilchen. “This

is particularly alarming as we know that SOGI education plays a vital role in making our school communities more inclusive for all and giving students the opportunity to fully be themselves while attending school.

“Equity and inclusion are foundational not just to learning success, but to good mental and physical well-being. That said, I am hopeful in the sense that we see more and more examples of students being their authentic selves while at school and get the general sense the vast majority of students are inclusive of queer students.”

DPDhelpingtofostera‘welcoming’community

You will often hear that policing is a calling It is something that you wear as much on your heart as you do on your sleeve

For many people, what they do for work is a job. For us, what we do is a part of our identities

Believe us when we say that we are truly proud to wear the uniform; proud to serve the public; proud to help shape safer, more inclusive communities. Similarly, for those of us who are queer, we are proud to spend our lives fighting for equality and recognition for people from all backgrounds.

Unfortunately, with the shared history surrounding New York City’s

Stonewall Inn, the path to reconciliation and a safer, more inclusive community will not be reached overnight But within the DPD, we are proud to say that we are here, working tirelessly towards that goal So, to the people of Delta, we owe you our thanks, because you have reached out with open arms and accepted us as well

It is hard to put into words exactly, the feeling of being genuinely included at Delta’s Pride events. Thankful is an understatement Your acceptance and support of your DPD, especially your queer officers, shows us and future

generations that working together toward a common goal and including all people and professions is the way forward

We are thankful that we are not only accepted but invited, to the Delta Pride Picnic in uniform It is an invitation that we do not – and must nottake for granted

To be both openly queer and openly police is not an easy thing. We are thankful that we can reconcile two identities, and be them both, authentically, within this community that many of us call home. We are thankful to live, work, and play in a community that embraces us for who

we are, and is open to improving our relationship That is what makes Delta so special to so many

You may see us throughout the month of June, wearing rainbow ribbons affixed to our shirts or vests and displaying our rainbow police shoulder flashes, and we will certainly see you again at the Pride Picnic in August. But in the meantime, we make this promise to you, Delta: we will continue working to educate, advocate, and celebrate internally at the DPD so we can improve relationships externally with the 2SLGBTQI+ community.

And we promise that we will never take your acceptance for granted.

From all of us at the DPD: we see you, we

serve you, you are safe with us, and you are all welcome here.

Hope after a shattered dream

“We had hoped he was the one to redeem Israel!” (Luke 24.13-35)

These words sum up the shattered dream of people who had followed Jesus for three good years as they walked to a place called Emmaus after his crucifixion.

His death had shattered their hopes. He was like no other before him. How can this be, after all those great things he said and did? It was a conversation of traumatized people

There are many times when our lives and our world is traumatized by different events.

We take our journeys, in which we are sharing stories of grief and sorrow Suddenly, we find ourselves saying; We

are exasperated. We are exhausted We are frustrated

So, doubt begins to creep into our minds

Our Faith gets questioned: “Where is your Yahweh, you Jews?”

“Where is your Allah,

you Muslims?” “Where is your Jesus, you Christians?”

What fascinates me in this Gospel text is how Jesus took the two men step-by-step: Jesus walked with them in their seven-mile journey. Of course, they failed to recognize him Disappointment, grief, and sorrow can overwhelm us so much that we fail to feel the presence of God when he is right there with us

Jesus listened to their story. He joined in their conversations He asked what it was they were talking about.

In our daily frustrations let us speak with Jesus. When our dreams are shattered God is there to restore hope

DELTASPORTS LadnerPioneers’goalcreasefeaturesNLLMVP

The MVP of the 2023 National Lacrosse League season is in the Ladner Pioneers’ goal crease this season.

The defending President’s Cup national champions recently landed Calgary Roughnecks star and Coquitlam native Christian Del Bianco.

The 25-year-old, who was named NLL MVP last month, not surprisingly owns a 6-0 record with a league best 4.85 goals against average since his Pioneers’ debut.

Del Bianco saw his NLL season end in a deciding game semifinal loss to the Colorado Mammoth He led the league in save percentage ( 810), while recording career highs in wins (13) and assists (19). He was also named First Team All-League.

Del Bianco made his pro debut with the Roughnecks back in 2017 when he was still junior age and led the Adanacs to a pair of Minto Cup titles.

The reigning Western Lacrosse Association MVP opted for Ladner instead of another summer with the Coquitlam Adanacs after leading his hometown team to its

first post-season berth since 2013

Thanks to a sponsorship war chest, the Pioneers’ roster also features three of his Roughnecks’ teammates Tyler Pace, Jeff Cornwall and Zach Herreweyers Other NLL regulars include Ryan Benesch, Matt Beers, Phil Caputo, Mike Mallory and Owen Barker.

“Just having the familiarity of guys like Tyler Pace and Jeff, along with the other NLL guys here Hearing their experience of going to the President’s Cup last year and just how much of a grind it was Obviously, we first still have to get there but it would be a fun experience for me, ” said Del Bianco. “Playing two games in one day Everyone kind of laughs at that one. It’s like going back to your days playing bantam or pee wee.

“You look around and kind of see what teams are loading up in the WLA You start to realize where teams are going to be. It’s obviously a good league and you see those top teams that are competing, but it kind of becomes a thing where it’s top teams versus everyone else Unless you ’ re on one of the big

ticket teams that has some money to spend, you ’ re not going to have the same chance to compete and I think most of us are playing the game to try to win.

“Ladner kind of had the offer of winning and that’s our goal here”

Just a 14-game regular

season schedule and fewer practices will also give Del Bianco more time to do things away from the game

“At the end of the day, there is different reasons and different benefits For a lot of us, it’s the flexibility that you gain For me, personally, we

have a big reno that we are doing in August at home. Having the ability to spend a little time off doing that helps”

The Pioneers raised their President’s Cup championship banner last Thursday in a 24-4 win over the Nanaimo Timbermen. A 22-8 vic-

tory over North Shore the following night leaves them with a 8-1 record. They welcome Victoria (6-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m. as part of the Delta Islanders’ recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day with four games on tap at the Ladner Leisure Centre.
