Delta has Metro’s most dangerous crash spot in 2024 PHIL MELNYCHUK pmelnychuk@delta-optimist.com
OPTIMIST FILE PHOTO
Delta has one of the most dangerous intersections.
Delta drivers distinguished themselves last year, but not in a good way. According to a pile of statistics released by ICBC, the Lower Mainland location with the highest number of
crashes in 2024 is located in Delta, on Annacis Island, where 481 serious or fatal accidents were recorded at the Alex Fraser Bridge and Cliveden Avenue and nearby off ramps. All kinds of numbers are available from ICBC, such as the number and locations of serious or

fatal MVAs in each city. When considering the five-year period from 2020 to 2024, that same location produced 1,831 bad crashes, the highest number of accidents in Delta. Next most dangerous in Delta were Hwy. 17 at Hwy. 91 and the Hwy. 91 connector and Nordel Way and the off-ramps, where 968 bad crashes were recorded, followed in third place by 120th Street and Nordel Way, racking up 562 injury or fatal accidents in those five years. Anyone wondering about the busy George Massey Tunnel can be slightly reassured, with only 310 bad crashes reported in and around the tunnel in that period. More EVs on the road People are also increasingly plugging in, instead of gassing up their vehicles, with growing frequency, based on ICBC numbers from the past five years. For example, from 2020 to 2024, the number of electric vehicles in Delta has jumped from 1,241 to 4,402, an increase of 255 percent. Other cities showed similar increases. In Vancouver, EV ownership jumped to 29,266, the highest in the province and an increase of 282 percent, while Richmond saw an increase of 360 percent, to 10,949 EVs in that city in 2024. To the east of Delta, Surrey saw 22,252 EV owners, which represented a huge jump of 383 percent. But the numbers show, without the temperate Lower Mainland, and its warmer winters, B.C. would have only a hand-
Number of EVs up a lot, by two or three times, in the past five years ful of EVs. Of the 153,041 electric cars in all of B.C., the Lower Mainland accounts for 121,211 of them, or almost 80 percent. And if you’re wondering what EV is the most popular, Tesla accounts for almost half, with 67,700 of such vehicles in all of B.C., in 2024. Next most popular in the EV category was Nissan with 10,345, followed by Tesla trucks/ vans at 9,852. Traffic deaths Numbers also tracked the number of deaths involving heavy vehicles, or deaths of cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians. In all of B.C. in 2023, there were 73 traffic deaths involving at least one heavy vehicle, compared to only 45 in the year 2019, working out to an increase of 62 percent. When the five-year average (2019-2023) of 64 deaths involving heavy vehicles, is compared with 45 back in 2019, it’s a 42 percent increase. As for cyclists, from 2019 to 2023, for all of B.C., an average of seven cyclists are killed yearly. For that same period, the five-year average number of deaths of motorcyclists in all of B.C. is 40, with an average of 15 motorcyclists dying in crashes each year in the Lower Mainland.

Preparation, talk continues for new Fraser River Tunnel PHIL MELNYCHUK pmelnychuk@delta-optimist.com
While many still say that a 10-lane bridge could have been built by now, the new Fraser River Tunnel is a work in progress. Wednesday (June 4), the Environmental Assessment Office held another open house to hear public comments on environmental impacts during construction. Once the public input process is complete, the project will be finalized and goes to government for final approval, in 2026, when construction also begins. The new Fraser River Tunnel will be one of the widest in the world at 45 metres, said Donald Trapp, executive-director of the Fraser River Tunnel Project. “So, in the world of immersed tunnels, it’s a significant project,” he said. Each component, or tunnel

People asked questions at latest open house. element, is 130 metres long, while the portion of the tunnel that will be underwater is 780 metres, for a total tunnel length of 1.4 kilometres. The eight-lane tunnel, with three general traffic lanes and one transit lane in each direction, is expected to open in 2030, at cost of $4.1 billion. The present George Massey Tunnel, opened in 1959, will remain open during the con-
struction period. About 10 hectares on each side of the river will be needed for temporary construction staging purposes, with 4.3 ha of that in Deas Island Regional Park, or about five percent of the total park area. After construction, that area will be restored, based on input from Metro Vancouver. Pedestrian and cycling access for the Millennium
Trail, beneath Hwy. 99, will be improved with the project because the new passage way will be wider. “It will be a new Deas Slough Bridge but it will (have) better access underneath, five metres wide, more comfortable, improved safety,” Trapp said. But it’s not certain if that trail will be closed during the fiveyear construction period, said Trapp. “The extent of this disruption — can’t commit to that today,” he said, although he recognized it’s an important trail for the community. And, working with the design builder, is there a way to maintain access? he asked. A statement from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit expanded on that, saying the trail, “is well-used by the local community and an important part of the local active transportation network. “The project team will work with its design-builder to iden-
tify ways to manage impacts and maintain this connection as best as possible.” Last July, Cross Fraser Partnership was chosen to finalize and design the project. The project however doesn’t include a northbound River Road overpass across Hwy. 99, although it could be added later, said Ken Nash, associate project director. The overpass would allow motorists to exit Ladner northbound and connect on to 60th Avenue, then Hwy. 17A. Delta council have long argued that the overpass should be part of the project. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit is also pushing for more federal funding. Steveston Interchange on Hwy. 99, in Richmond, is also part of the project and opens this year. Some residents at the open house said that if a bridge was chosen, it would have been open by now.

Feeling old? Remember the Stones, says seniors advocate SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The next time somebody asks you how old you are, tell them instead the year you were born to make them work for it. That quip and others were part of an informative presentation with a dose of levity from BC Seniors Advocate Dan Levitt at the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre last Thursday (June 5), during BC Seniors Week. He reminded those in attendance to “be proud of your wrinkles” and not listen to their inner voice, or others, saying they are “having a senior’s moment.” Urging seniors to keep active and moving, Levitt outlined the plethora of issues his office is currently advocating, including giving people the ability to age in their own communities by providing sufficient longterm care or affordable housing, rather than being forced
SANDOR GYARMATI PHOTO
BC Seniors Advocate Dan Levitt provided an uplifting presentation at the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre last week, telling seniors to be proud of their age. to move away. The issue will be among the highlights in an upcoming report. He also went over challenges seniors continue to face, including ageism, where
a recent report from his office noted a survey of seniors found 84 percent believe ageism is a problem, while 54 percent have personally experienced it. Noting 20 percent of B.C.’s
population is over 65, and that a decade from now the oldest Baby Boomers will be turning 90, Levitt said seniors are diverse and deserve the resources they need. He said 95 percent live independently, but once people start hitting their mid-80s, around 22 percent will require assisted living, long-term care or more assistance at home, with many others including spouses being caregivers. A report by the seniors advocate earlier this year recommended eliminating co-payments for home support. The BC Seniors Supplement also needs to be better adjusted for inflation, he said. Recommending seniors investigate utilizing the property tax deferment program, since 80 percent of seniors own their own home but many are cash poor, Levitt said it’s a way to have extra money in their pockets, with a nominal interest rate.
“You may never have to pay that bill. Whoever inherits your house will have to pay that bill,” he said. However, about 20 percent of seniors are renters, a big concern given that a B.C. subsidy is “woefully inadequate” for the 25 percent of those renters having to live off $24,000 a year, given the average rent is $2,000. Among other issues they are hoping to see changed include the 15 percent of seniors who continue to work but don’t have the same benefits as their younger colleagues, such as losing long-term disability after 64 and seeing pension contributions halted by age 71. Levitt wrapped up the session by saying seniors should not only embrace their age, but celebrate it, reminding the audience how members of the Rolling Stones, who are almost 80, or have already entered that age bracket, strutted their stuff at a concert in Vancouver last summer.

H
ave we lost respect for our community, for our fellow residents? I find myself asking these questions a lot lately based on several disturbing incidents. A few weeks back – over the May long weekend – Grade 12 students from Delta Secondary and Seaquam Secondary in North Delta, were on an unsanctioned grad camping trip. Their campsite was left in a horrible state, so much so, that a massive clean-up was done by a third party and prompted an ongoing investigation by Delta school district officials and the B.C. Conservation Officer Service. I was always taught to pack out what you pack in and to leave your camping or gathering spot in better shape than when you arrived. Guess these Grade 12 students were never taught this message. Recently, several people have posted on local social media pages photos of vandalism and the shocking state people are leaving the community’s public washrooms in. Disgusting behaviour with toilet paper everywhere, garbage strewn about, even one picture of a huge tree branch logged into one of the toilets. The City of Delta has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars upgrading and building new public washroom facilities throughout the community and this is how we show our gratitude? Your tax dollars wasted because of someone else’s stupidity. And the stupidity and lack of respect continued this past weekend. On Sunday night, I received photos from a resident outraged at an illegal beach fire in Boundary Bay – that could have spread very quickly had it not been for the quick actions of Delta firefighters. Even more concerning, however, was the garbage left behind and the state of the beach area. As the resident said to us, “We all want to continue to enjoy the beach. It’s getting busier and needs to be treated with respect.” I couldn’t agree more.
The power of a shared meal
I
n a world that moves at the speed of WiFi and where communication is often reduced to emojis and emails, the simple act of sharing a meal remains one of the most powerful, time-tested ways to connect. Whether it’s over a boardroom lunch, a backyard barbecue, or coffee with a new acquaintance, sitting down to eat together creates space for something more than just consumption. It creates space for conversation, trust, and shared humanity. Personally, I’ve always preferred sharing a meal over any other form of communication. Why? Because it demands presence. It invites honesty. It strips away the performance and posturing that so often shows up in meetings or text threads. You can’t fast-forward through a
Community Comment
WARREN DEAN FLANDEZ meal. You sit. You wait. You listen. You learn. But let’s be honest, meals can also be awkward. There’s no easy exit, no muting your camera or leaving the chat. You’re committed to a certain stretch of time. The pauses, the way someone chews, the decision to talk through dessert or sit in silence — all of it reveals something. Meals expose us. And that’s exactly
why they matter. There’s something inherently disarming about food. It levels the playing field. No matter your title, background, or bank account, we all must eat. And in that shared necessity, we find common ground. In business, a meal can turn a transaction into a relationship. With family or friends, it can spark laughter or unearth long-simmering truths. When meeting someone new, it’s a fast track to knowing who they really are. You learn a lot by how someone passes the salt — or doesn’t. In a divided world, the table remains a sacred meeting place. So, the next time you want to truly connect, don’t just send a message. Share a meal. Because food doesn’t just fill us, it reveals us.

S. Delta drivers ignore signs Editor: It seems that South Delta drivers have decided that stop signs are a suggestion. Three times in the last two months I have been running/walking in the middle of a signed intersection and had a driver simply drive through it. A middle-aged lady gave me the finger when I yelled at her to stop. All three of these incidents were within a block of our Delta community police office. On June 5, two young people (with an N on the back of the car) just drove through an intersection while making a turn, as I

Stop signs are a suggestion, says this letter writer. was running through it. A month or so ago, I asked the young people at the Delta community police office reception desk what the Delta police were doing to enforce the law regarding stop signs, even in a limited way.
Their response was the verbal version of a shrug. I am sick of the disregard for pedestrians in South Delta and wonder why we can’t have any traffic enforcement, even right in front of the community policing station. Stephen Holding
No audit system? So where is the accountability, Delta? Editor: So, let me get this straight: the City of Delta, with $551 million in expenditures in its latest financial plan, doesn’t have an internal audit system in place? You’ve got to be kidding. That would be laughable if it weren’t so outrageous. Any business — even a tiny one — knows that internal controls are necessary when handling any sum of money. Checks. Oversight. Transparency. Yet somehow, a fullscale municipality has been fine operating without any internal audit function. This is laughable! But here’s where it really stops being funny: the man now proposing this long-overdue measure, Mayor George Harvie, was the city’s chief administrative officer for 17 years, from 2001 to 2018. Seventeen years running the show behind the scenes. Now, as mayor, he’s finally suggesting that perhaps the city should have a mechanism to make sure public funds are being tracked and spent properly? Now? Was there never a moment in all those years as CAO when the absence
of internal auditing struck him as a serious oversight? Or are we supposed to believe this is some sudden revelation — that accountability only became important after two decades of being at the helm? It’s beyond insulting. Residents have been paying taxes, watching services get squeezed and rates go up, and there’s been no independent way to verify how efficiently money is being spent? No performance audits? No internal financial checks? That’s not just poor management — it’s negligence. Mayor Harvie’s proposal might sound like a step forward, but it’s more like a long-overdue admission: this should have been in place years ago. If smalltown shops can keep clean books, surely a city this size should be able to figure it out. Delta residents deserve answers — and they deserve a fully operational, independent internal audit function. Not for show. Not as a check box. But as the baseline level of accountability that should have been there all along. Jake Delonge

School district plans to use AI to help conserve water Recently, students at South Delta Secondary had a behind-the-scenes look at an innovative project being developed by Pierre Ngo, the Delta school district’s energy manager and project manager, that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and real-time weather data to conserve water. “There is nothing more frustrating than seeing automated irrigation systems in full swing when it is raining outside,” said Ngo. “It’s a waste of water, not to mention a waste of money. I wanted to show students how leveraging cutting-edge technology can help control when and where watering takes place at schools and district sites. Water is our most precious natural resource – it’s vital that we make the most efficient and effective use of it.” Ngo is working on a system that taps into AI-generated weather forecasts from OpenWeather. These forecasts are incredibly detailed, offering minute-byminute updates for specific locations. The idea is to feed this data into a microprocessor that controls irrigation systems across schools and district sites. There are multiple steps involved writing an API (Application programming interface) then translating these into tables and machine language that the microprocessor will be able to understand. “If the data indicates that it’s rain-
ing—or about to— a reprocessed signal will get sent to the irrigation controller to keep the sprinklers off,” he explained. “Currently, most irrigation systems in the district run on timers, which means they aren’t responsive to actual weather conditions. With my new system, I hope to change that.” Before diving into the technology, Ngo gave students a crash course in weather science — explaining how temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind, and rainfall all play a role in forecasting. Then, he explained how the OpenWeather AI platform leverages advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to process and enhance data from various sources such as weather stations, satellites, and radar systems, which can then be used to make smart decisions about when and where to water. “Pierre’s visit gave students a real-world example of how AI can be used to protect the environment. It’s inspiring to see our district leading the way in sustainability,” said science teacher Isaac Adams. According to the school district, there’s another big benefit: cost. Instead of building and maintaining expensive weather stations across Ladner, Tsawwassen, and North Delta, the AI-based forecasts cost a fraction of the price. - Submitted

Delta chops some trees for new Tsawwassen pathway SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta is updating residents on a pair of major projects that have generated a lot of chatter in Tsawwassen. To be completed this summer, the installation continues for a new sanitary main along 56th Street, from 16th Avenue to View Crescent, continuing along View Crescent, and then back along 56th Street, from View Crescent to 12th Avenue. Work is currently taking place at the intersection of 56th Street and 14B Avenue, but owing to the depth of excavation, removal of old concrete material, proximity to an active gas main, as well as compliance with provincial regulations with the site being within an archaeological zone, work will continue to progress over the next several weeks, the city explains. To reduce daytime traffic impacts, much of the work along 56th Street is scheduled overnight. When that work is done, sewer
replacement will continue along View Crescent during the daytime hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Pathway Meanwhile, preliminary work for the new 56th Street Multi-Use Pathway began last month, which involved the removal of trees. Noting construction will follow this summer and be completed this fall, the pathway will be located along 56th Street, between Sixth Avenue and Winskill Park, the city notes. According to the city, “This project includes necessary tree removals along the construction area to allow for the installation of the new multiuse pathway. The current sidewalk has been damaged and uprooted; the new pathway will provide a safer and more accessible path for all users. To comply with environmental regulations, a qualified environmental professional conducted a bird nesting study prior to construction, confirming that the City meets the necessary requirements.” The construction contract is currently out for tender.
Since the adoption of the OCP, Delta continues to refine City housing policy and regulations to make it easier to implement Small-Scale Multi-Unit Housing. The City is currently reviewing zoning on small-scale residential lots (previously referred to as single-detached lots). You are invited to learn more about this work and share your feedback at one of two open houses.

Vancouver Landfill to reach capacity in a few years The millions of dollars in royalties the City of Delta receives annually also will cease SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Metro Vancouver continues to work on updating its Solid Waste Management Plan, which includes how much more waste can be diverted from the landfill in Delta. Last updated over a decade ago, the new plan would be aimed at identifying opportunities to further advance waste reduction and recycling, reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The plan is “supported by robust engagement and technical studies.” A regional district report notes Metro recently concluded an idea generation phase, which included research and engagement for the development of potential strategies and actions. A draft plan is anticipated to be provided to Metro’s Zero Waste Committee and Greater Vancouver Sewage and Drainage District (GVS&DD) in 2026 for consideration, prior to submission to the Minister of Environment and Parks. Meanwhile, the latest Vancouver
Landfill Annual Report was recently made public by the City of Vancouver, which owns and operates the dump located next door to Burns Bog. Noting that, to date, a total of 126.8 hectares have been progressively closed, representing 56 per cent of the 225-hectare landfill footprint, the report provides a series of figures on such things as types of waste, recycling numbers, landfill gas control, compost and leachate and stormwater management. The landfill is authorized to accept up to 750,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste for disposal each year. However, materials used beneficially, such as for cover, road building and closure, are not counted toward that annual discharge limit. In 2024, 733,196 tonnes of waste were disposed at the landfill, the report notes. Vancouver is responsible to pay for closure and post-closure costs for Vancouver and Delta waste, and those percentages are reviewed and adjusted annually.
At the end of 2024, 39 percent of the total waste in place at the landfill was regional waste, with the remaining 61 percent originating from Vancouver and Delta. As far as the closure plan for the site, which includes an operational area within perimeter ditches as well a pond and perimeter buffer, the plan continues to be a full closure of the dump. In 1999, Vancouver, Vancouver and Delta entered into a new long-term agreement whereby the operational life was extended to 2037. Garbage would be permitted to be piled higher on the existing footprint and by 2037 the site is to be transferred to Delta. A 200-hectare area of undeveloped land, known as Parcel 2, that was part of the original landfill property, was transferred to Delta, the GVS&DD and Metro Vancouver back in 2009. In 2013, an additional 100-hectare area, known as Lot 9, was transferred to Delta. As of the end of 2024, several phases have been progressively closed
with engineered cover systems, including the Western 40 Hectares and Phases 1, 2, 3 and 4. No closure work occurred in 2024, as planned, the report adds. The report also notes the operational plan over the next 12 months includes completion of filling in an area known as Phase 5 South in preparation for closure in 2025. As per that 1999 agreement, the current waste capacity of the landfill is defined as 20 million tonnes of municipal solid waste. The remaining capacity, as of December 31, 2024, is 4,228,582 tonnes, which at the current fill rate, will be reached in 2030, the report notes. Meantime, according to the City of Delta’s 2025 financial plan, anticipated revenues from landfill royalties is $4,410,000, up $680,000 from 2024. That revenue will cease once the dump closes for good. A Delta engineering department memo six years ago noted an early closure of the Vancouver Landfill “could have a significant financial impact to Vancouver and Delta.”

The City of Delta wants to make it easier to have new housing built faster by collecting a certain charge at a different time. Council recently endorsed a staff recommendation to ask the provincial government to review existing legislation to allow greater flexibility in the timing of development cost charge (DCC) collection and provide new mechanisms to secure collection at occupancy, as well as explore alternative mechanisms to secure payment. “In assessing the financial effect of changes to DCC collection, city staff reached out to municipal counterparts to gather information on their processes. Extensive discussions were also held with a third-party consultant to provide additional perspective on the considerations specific to Delta in altering its DCC collection approach,” a report notes. The report also notes recent provin-
cial initiatives aimed at modifying the DCC installment program and providing enhanced in-stream protection for specific developments are expected to help homebuilders finance residential construction. However, provincial legislative amendments are needed to permit municipalities to adjust the timing of DCC collections, and the city is currently unable to defer collection of DCCs to the occupancy stage. The report goes on to note potential challenges identified including administrative changes that would be required. Once a project is otherwise complete, it may also be difficult for the city to withhold occupancy due to unpaid DCCs. There is also potential for multiple owners at the time of occupancy, versus a single developer to collect from, the report adds. The timing and availability of funds might require Delta to re-prioritize capital projects and explore additional funding sources.

Delta encouraging more accessory dwelling units SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta council recently gave a preliminary OK for a subdivision and rezoning application that will see a single-family property in the 7600block of 116A Street split into two small-scale residential lots. The older existing house on site would be demolished, making way for building a singledetached dwelling, with a secondary suite and a garden suite on each lot. In 2024, council approved a bylaw amendments to permit small-scale, multi-unit housing (SSMUH) on any property that was zoned for single-detached or duplex dwellings, an amendment mandated by the province.
It’s a move which will eventually dramatically change the appearance of traditional single-family neighbourhoods. Delta’s SSMUH regulations are intended to expedite the approval of multiple units on existing lots by using the building permit application process to replace the need for rezoning or subdivision applications. The regulations are undergoing a review for potential changes. A report earlier this year noted that since the adoption of the regulations, the city had received building permit applications for 30 detached accessory dwelling units (ADUs), including garden suites and coach houses. A recent report notes staff are developing a

program to support and encourage the development of ADUs throughout Delta, including developing an ADU “concierge” service to help homeowners and developers navigate the application process. They would compile a catalogue of ADU designs from the province and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation that would be permitted in Delta. The city will also hold public engagement to promote the program. The report adds the program is also a required initiative of the federal Housing Accelerator Fund program and aligns with Delta’s Housing Action Plan by supporting opportunities for sensitive infill development.
CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2025! Congratulations to all high school graduates across Delta! This is a proud milestone-and a testament to your hard work, perseverance, and dedication. DELTA GYMNASTICS
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS
Celebrating 50 years - since 1975
Delta Gymnastics – how it all began Kari Cullen
D
elta Gymnastics Society (DGS) proudly marks its 50th anniversary this year, but how did it all begin? It was the product of one young and determined person’s vision.
In 1975, Kari Cullen, a UBC graduate and former UBC gymnast, sought to bring gymnastics to Tsawwassen.
With the support of Delta Parks & Recreation, she launched the first gymnastics program in the auxiliary gym of Tsawwassen Junior High. The overwhelming response on registration day – with a line around the block - proved the community’s enthusiasm, despite limited equipment and resources. “Our equipment was rudimentary at best,” Cullen recalls. “Our very first fundraiser, a raffle, raised funds
to purchase a set of tie-down uneven bars — essential for gymnasts to perform skills safely. Before that, we needed people to hold on to the bars, something that would be unimaginable now.”
By 1977, Delta Gymnastics hosted its first competition, featuring 18 gymnasts.
Just a few years later, in 1980, the club celebrated as Alison McCullough became its first gymnast to compete in the BC Winter Games — marking the beginning of a long tradition of competitive excellence. Other events, exchanges, trips, and competitions quickly followed.
“
I never imagined the longevity and legacy of what I started that sunny Saturday 50 years ago.
Delta Gymnastics achieved a major milestone in 1989, officially registering as a non-profit society. As the organization grew, it moved through various locations, including school
Kari Cullen in the early years Reflecting on the past five decades, Cullen expresses deep pride in the DGS’s journey.
Kari Cullen and Carlene Lewall gyms and shared spaces at the South Delta Rec Centre.
In 1993, the dream of a permanent facility became a reality when the City of Delta provided a dedicated space at the South Delta Rec Centre, allowing the society to expand its programs and impacts.
“I never imagined the longevity and legacy of what I started that sunny Saturday 50 years ago. Seeing generations of families involved in our programs and witnessing our incredible 20,000 sq. ft. facility with state-of-the-art equipment — it’s truly beyond words.”
Today, Delta Gymnastics continues to thrive, offering recreational and competitive programs that empower gymnasts of all ages. As the society looks ahead, it remains committed to its mission of fostering confidence, physical literacy, and community engagement.

“
We have always been committed to ensuring every individual has the opportunity to experience the joy of movement in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Carlene Lewall and Kari Cullen
Carlene Lewall
T
he journey of Delta Gymnastics Society (DGS) has been shaped by dedicated individuals like Carlene Lewall, who joined Kari Cullen in 1979. Cullen and Lewall became a coaching duo, using the guiding philosophy of “Kids Are First.” Gymnastics grew in popularity, outgrowing its homes at Tsawwassen Junior High, South Delta Secondary, the halls of the South Delta Rec Centre, and then even the permanent gym built in 1993. Delta Gymnastics grew into one of Canada’s leading gymnastics clubs, fostering a love for movement and community engagement with the help of excellent coaches, great staff and committed parents.
“Gymnastics is more than a sport — it’s a foundation for lifelong skills,” said Lewall. “We have always been committed to ensuring every individual has the opportunity to experience the joy of movement in a welcoming and supportive environment. We are all proud of all our gymnasts and the values they learnt from gymnastics, which has helped them to achieve and grow.”
Lewall appreciates the support received by the community of Delta over the years, which has allowed DGS to become who they are today. By the turn of the century, DGS had outgrown their permanent facility at the South Delta Rec Centre and needed to fundraise for a larger gym.
“We began with the dream of one day providing gymnastics for all who wished to sign up,” said Lewall.
But on June 25, 2002, they received a call at 3 a.m. with the news the gym was on fire.
“It was devastating, but we did not let this dampen our spirit. The community and the gymnastics world came together in a show of support that made our hearts swell with appreciation,” said Lewall. “We rebuilt and moved back in 2003, continuing with the dream of a larger gym.”
Under her leadership, the Kids First capital fundraising campaign began in 2009. “Thanks to generous support from grants, Westshore Terminals, individuals, local businesses and the City of Delta, we raised $3.2 million and moved into our new state-ofthe-art facility in Ladner in 2011.”
Today, Delta Gymnastics continues to prosper, offering inclusive programs for individuals of all ages — from toddlers to seniors — and every skill level. As DGS looks to the future, it is guided by its philosophy of “Kids are First.” It remains committed to its mission of promoting physical literacy for all and fostering a strong sense of community.

T
he Delta Gymnastics Society (DGS) board of directors is pleased and excited to announce the appointment of Jenn Watts as the organization’s new executive director, effective immediately. “Jenn has a long and meaningful history with Delta Gymnastics Society,” said board chair Glynn Gates. “Her ongoing commitment to the organization is evident through her deep understanding of our culture and her strong passion for our ‘Where Kids Come First’ philosophy.”
Delta Gymnastics Society welcomes Jenn Watts as new executive director Since 2014, Watts has served in multiple leadership roles at DGS, including program coordinator, program manager, and coach for the women’s competitive, Superstar, and Gymnaestrada teams. Her extensive experience and deeprooted connection to the DGS community make her uniquely suited to lead the organization into its next chapter.
“Jenn brings invaluable institutional knowledge and a strong connection to the entire DGS family: parents, gymnasts, staff, volunteers, and the community,” added Gates.
The board also extends its heartfelt appreciation to the current DGS staff for their extraordinary effort, dedication, and resilience during this period of transition. “Their commitment to our gymnasts and to the values that define DGS has not gone unnoticed. The board
is incredibly grateful for everything they do,” said Gates.
Jenn’s journey with DGS began as a young gymnast in the mid-1990s.
“
She was invited to join the women’s competitive program, where she trained under coaches Kari Cullen and later Carlene Lewall for nearly a decade.
She began coaching in the early 2000s and continued to support the organization while earning her bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Health Education from the University of Victoria.
“I wanted to stay connected to DGS during my university years,” said Watts. “I coached on weekends throughout my time at UVic.” In 2014, she was hired by then-executive director Ana Arciniega as a program coordinator. “Delta Gymnastics has always been a special place for me — it has helped shape who I am,” said Watts.
Delta Gymnastics has always been a special place for me — it has helped shape who I am.
“Now, I want to ensure it can do the same for generations to come by building an organization that is resilient, innovative, and set up to thrive for years to come.”
On behalf of the board, staff, and the entire DGS community, we extend our warmest congratulations to Jenn Watts and wish her every success as she steps into this exciting new role.

Programs offered at Delta Gymnastics DGS’s mission is to enable people of all ages and abilities to have confidence and competence to live active, healthy lifestyles by participating in gymnastics activities and sport. Below is a detailed breakdown of these programs.
Developmental Program
Advanced Program
Community Program
From Tots to 6-year-olds, our Active Start programs focus on fun, fitness, and development of physical literacy skills at the core of all sports. From ages 7 to 12, our Fundamentals classes progress thru eight levels based on our Achievement program. Gymnaestrada is inclusive of all ages or skill levels. It is a performance based noncompetitive activity involving a combination of dance, acrobatics, and gymnastics, with the goals to promote and encourage joy in exercise. Our Specialty programs include trampoline, RISE Adaptive programs for children and youth facing barriers, and our Seniors Can Move reacquaints our participants with fundamental movement skills to keep them safe and active.
The sport of gymnastics consists of 4 events for women: vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor, and 6 events for men: floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, and high bar. Due to the nature of these programs, children are assessed and invited to participate. Gymstars for girls and Supermen for boys needs more training hours but no competition is required. Our Superstar girls compete and learn routines for each of the women’s events. Our Women’s Artistic team follow the Junior Olympic Program allowing each gymnast to advance at their own pace. Our Men’s Artistic program trains boys for three levels of competition: Provincial, National and Elite. Each compete at the level that’s a fit for their ability, commitment, and age. High School is a co-ed program for all abilities – from beginner to advanced.
Our facility houses the Delta Sport Development Centre, to deliver programs focused on giving opportunities to participants to explore movement; understand its need, value and importance as a building block for a healthy and active lifestyle. Our Drop in, Camps, Kids and Teens Night Out introduce movement through play and involvement guiding them through various stations around the gym and play activities that challenge balance, coordination, strength, mental and social development, teamwork, leadership, and collaboration skills. Our Birthday Parties and Field Trips allow members of the community to participate in a friendly, fun, and safe environment, learning the importance of the foundation of sport.

executive director Jenn Watts. “These combined groups foster meaningful interaction, mutual encouragement, and joy. The engagement between the two age groups is a powerful testament to the universal benefits of movement. It’s not just about fitness — it’s about connection, confidence, and community.”
Recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a foundational sport, gymnastics teaches the fundamental movement and sports skills that are essential for success in all other physical activities. From climbing and swinging to balancing and landing, gymnastics develops the ABCs of athleticism: agility, balance, coordination, and speed. These core skills are not only vital for athletic performance, but also for everyday movement and injury prevention. That’s why Canadian Sport for Life recommends gymnastics as a key program for developing these essential abilities. While gymnastics is often associated with children, the importance of fundamental movement skills spans all ages. Whether you’re a toddler learning to walk, a teen exploring new sports, an adult seeking better mobility,
The RISE adaptive gymnastics program is designed to support children who face physical, cognitive, or emotional barriers to participation.
“
“Through personalized instruction and supportive coaching, children in RISE develop not only physical skills but also a sense of belonging and self-worth,” said Watts. “It’s a celebration of ability, resilience, and the transformative power of movement.”
It’s not just about fitness — it’s about connection, confidence, and community.

comes to life through unique intergenerational programs where children and seniors share time and space in the gym.
“During the daytime schedule, we offer our Seniors Can Move program at the same time as our pre-school Active Start classes,” said
Supported by grant funding, RISE creates a safe, inclusive environment where children can explore movement at their own pace, build confidence, and experience success. “Gymnastics provides the building blocks for all physical activity,” said Watts. “By encouraging participation across all age groups, we’re not just building better athletes —we’re building healthier communities.”

Delta Gymnastics marks 50 years with a night of celebration, legacy, and community
D
elta Gymnastics Society (DGS) is proud to celebrate its 50th Anniversary with a special evening of festivities on Saturday, June 21, at its Ladner facility.
“
This milestone event will honour five decades of athletic excellence, community spirit, and the thousands of lives shaped by the DGS philosophy: Where Kids Come First. Guests will be welcomed into a vibrant atmosphere filled with nostalgia and excitement. A special memorabilia display will showcase DGS’s rich history through photos, uniforms, and keepsakes. All past gymnasts are encouraged to bring their own vintage gear, awards, or photos to contribute to this living timeline of memories. Attendees can test their knowledge of DGS history with a fun trivia challenge, enjoy refreshments from the bar, and purchase paper airplanes for the always-popular— and fiercely competitive — airplane toss game, with prizes up for grabs. A silent auction with fantastic items with funds directed to the DGS Legacy Fund will be open for bids. The evening’s program will feature a Gymnaestrada performance, a
torch ceremony symbolizing the passing of leadership, and a toast to the future by new executive director Jenn Watts. “This night is about more than just gymnastics — it’s about the people, the stories, and the spirit that have shaped this community,” said Watts. “Delta Gymnastics has been a second home to so many, including myself. It’s an honour to carry that legacy forward.” A video tribute and testimonials from past and current gymnasts will follow, along with a special announcement about DGS’s vision

“DGS has always been a place where kids come first, but it’s also where families grow, friendships form, and leaders are made,” said Kari Cullen, founder of DGS. “This celebration is a tribute to everyone who has contributed to our journey — from our founders to our newest gymnasts.”
The evening will wrap up with the airplane toss competition, the announcement of trivia and silent auction winners, and a final toast to the community that has supported DGS for half a century.
This night is about more than just gymnastics — it’s about the people, the stories, and the spirit that have shaped this community.
“For those unable to attend, we ask you to email us your stories or testimonials of how DGS influenced your life,” said Watts. “We would love to hear from as many as past gymnasts as possible.”

Community
A reflection on unity This year, between Ascension and Pentecost, I found myself reflecting on Jesus’ heartfelt prayer in John 17: “That they may all be one.” This call to unity speaks beyond church walls — it speaks to our shared humanity. Before we are anything else, we are human, formed from the dust, animated by breath, bearing the image of God. No one is more or less human than another. We need each other. Martin Luther King Jr. put it best: before breakfast is over, you’ve depended on more than half the world — your sponge from the Pacific, soap from France, coffee from South America, tea from China, and cocoa from West Africa.

“No man is an island,” said poet John Donne. We thrive not alone, but together. As people of faith and as global citizens, we must live out a unity that respects diversity. Christian unity does not mean uniformity — it means harmony across
difference, rooted in love and mutual care. In the same way, human unity does not erase culture, language, or background, but draws strength from them. Even today, global challenges like pandemics, climate change, political instability, economic recession, and wars remind us that what affects one part of the world touches us all. The Mende people of Sierra Leone say, “When cattle stand together, the lion goes hungry.” We are stronger when we stand together. May we seek unity — not only in prayer — but in how we live, speak, and care for one another. Whether in faith or friendship, family or community, may we be one.

On June 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the South Delta Garden Club invites you to explore 10 remarkable gardens in Ladner and Tsawwassen during their muchanticipated garden tour.
Discover the hidden beauty of South Delta’s private gardens — an experience rarely offered to the public. On June 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the South Delta Garden Club invites you to explore 10 remarkable gardens in Ladner and Tsawwassen during their much-anticipated garden tour. Founded in 1952, the South Delta Garden Club has a proud tradition of supporting the creativity and passion of local gardeners. This year marks their fourth tour since 2017, following three successful events that drew more than 500 guests each. The self-guided tour is your chance to wander through gardens that reflect the ingenuity, artistry, and dedication of South Delta’s talented gardening community. Each of the 10 gardens on this year’s tour offers something unique.
You’ll visit a newly established “farm,” a garden lovingly tended for more than 40 years, and an expansive, park-like landscape. There’s a tiny, grassfree oasis, a large garden that incorporates a transformed tennis court, and a whimsical cottage-style retreat. Organic, sustainable, edibles are features of some gardens, while others cleverly weave edibles into their designs. You’ll find a peaceful sanctuary and a playful space for family games. You’ll see a rare plant collection curated by a true enthusiast - and a garden where many plants have been scavenged and given new life. What unites these diverse spaces is the creativity and dedication of their owners, each crafting a personal haven that reflects their own vision and style. Garden Tours are an opportunity to be
inspired, connect with fellow garden lovers, and support your local gardening community. Tickets are limited and historically sell out well before the tour date— purchase yours today and treat yourself to an enjoyable day exploring South Delta’s gardens! Advance tickets can be purchased for $30 (cash only) from Sunnyside Nurseries, Vandula Farms, Harris Nurseryland, Phoenix Perennials, West Coast Gardens, and West Coast Seeds. Tickets may be purchased on the day of tour (if available) at Harris Nurseryland for $40. Please note children under 12 and pets cannot be accommodated, and the gardens are not wheel-chair accessible or stroller-friendly. For more information, visit www.southdeltagardenclub.ca. -Submitted
Sidekick Players Club presents My Hero The Sidekick Players Club is thrilled to announce its final production of the season, My Hero, a heartfelt and humorous play by Canada’s most prolific playwright Norm Foster, that promises audiences an evening of laughter, reflection, and unforgettable performances. Directed by Jeff Pannell, My Hero tells the story of Jim Devine, a high school teacher who, five years after a painful divorce, is still living with his mother, Corrine. As Jim struggles with work and moving forward, Corrine begins to rediscover her own independence
— especially when she starts dating the gardener, Randy. What follows is a touching and comedic exploration of family dynamics, personal growth, and the courage it takes to embrace change. The production stars Linda Bernt as the spirited and strong-willed Corrine, Adrian Pryce as the emotionally stuck but endearing Jim, and Simon Ruddell as Randy, the charming and unexpected catalyst for transformation. “This play is a beautiful blend of humor and heart,” said Pannell. “It’s about the people we lean on, the ones who challenge us, and the sur-
prising ways we find our strength.” Don’t miss this chance to experience Norm Foster’s signature wit and warmth brought to life by a talented local cast. My Hero runs from June 13 to June 28 with performances Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays with matinee performances at 2 p.m. All performances at The Tsawwassen Arts Centre (1172 56th Street). Tickets are $22 for adults and $20 for seniors. Reserve tickets by calling 604-288-2415. -Submitted

A strong season on the rugby pitch ended with a bronze medal at the Tier 2 3A Boys Provincial Championships in Abbotsford, May 28 to 31. Ranked ninth heading into the provincials after a loss in the Fraser Valley Championships to Earl Marriott, the South Delta Secondary Sun Devils, who went undefeated in Fraser Valley league play, opened with a 24-5 win over Riverside, from Coquitlam. That set up a semifinal match with Rutland, where the Sun Devils lost 30-10, pushing them into the bronze medal match with Claremont. South Delta won that match 22-12, to finish their season on a high note. Coached this season by Matthew Bains and Nate Mantle, the Sun Devils were assisted by Jack Stokes, Caleb Van Til and Vic Kaidatzis. Kaidatzis, who is a Bayside Sharks Rugby Club coach, has also been helping. Also, a huge help to the team this season was conditioning coach Rudy Brits. “I see a ton of potential in these guys,
so as pleased as we were ending on a high note with a win, we were also slightly disappointed that we were not playing for first,” said Bains. “I felt on a different day we might have. The guys put in a lot of work. We had pretty serious fitness training this year. We had Rudy who came out every Monday.
“The kids hated it, but it paid dividends because it was very intense cardio training. General speaking over the course of the year we were much stronger in the second halves of games, and it was due in no small part to that. “A lot of our strongest players this year were Grade 11s, so I anticipate that next year we will set our sights even higher and build on this one next year.” This year’s roster included: Marcial Aguirre, Bradley Batista, Charles Blackwood, Jarred Brown, David Christian, Cooper Crockett, Thomas Dannhauser, Tucker Draper, Kayden Dunn, Luke Dunn, Tyler George, Mathias Hermesmann, Connor Hoffman, Carson Holmes, Jeremy Holmes, Charlie Iverson, Spencer Lauder, Brady Mantle, Leighton Marquardt, Ryan Moore, Merrick Petersen, Hudson Robinson, Quinn Sjoberg, Anthony Soares, Parker Wrathall, Callum Moennick, Porter Draper, Cam McVeigh, Brayden Lee and Lucas Chown.
Ice Hawks re-locating to Sungod Arena in North Delta IAN JACQUES i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
After 28 seasons at the Ladner Leisure Centre, the Delta Ice Hawks will have a new home for the 2025/26 Pacific Junior Hockey League season. On Thursday afternoon, the Junior A Tier 1 hockey club announced that the team is relocating to the Sungod Arena in North Delta. Centrally located, the 2,000-seat Sungod Arena is part of the Sungod Recreation Centre and was a venue for the IIHF 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. The Ice Hawks expanded team room will be the former dressing room that Team Canada used during
that tournament. According to Ice Hawks owner Eduard Epshtein, the move marks a significant step forward for the team, enhancing player development, fan experience, community engagement and the potential to host future Junior A Tier 1 Championships and events. “It’s a very exciting and bitter-sweet moment,” said Epshtein. “There are so many amazing memories and so much history in the 28 consecutive seasons at Ladner Leisure Centre, as a Junior B club and, most recently, a Junior A, Tier 2 club. With this move, we are starting a new chapter in the team’s history as Junior A, Tier 1 hockey team. We are grateful to the City of Delta and the minor hockey associations for making this move possible. We hope that our South
Delta-based fans continue to support our team in the new North Delta location.” Ice Hawks home games will now be Saturday night at 7 p.m., changing from the previous Tuesday night games at the Ladner Leisure Centre. “The City of Delta is proud to support the Delta Ice Hawks as they take this exciting next step in their journey,” added Mayor George Harvie. “The move to Sungod Arena not only reflects the team’s incredible growth and success but also strengthens community connections in North Delta. We look forward to welcoming fans from across Delta to cheer on the Ice Hawks in their new home and to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere this move will bring to Sungod Recreation Centre.”

REMEMBRANCES IN MEMORIAM
OBITUARIES
George Robert (Bob) Grand-Scrutton May 12, 1937 - April 10, 2025
In loving memory of Ruth Alice McMullen August 5, 1923 - June 10, 2024
Mom would have been 101 on August 5, 2024. She told me she was going to live to be 100. Well, she did it. Mom lived a life filled with love and adventure. Mom and Dad travelled the world together and with their Air Canada friends. She wore many hats proudly. Family and friends were very important to her - everyone was welcome at the McMullen’s. Imagine all the changes and challenges she lived through in the 100+ years of life!!! Even Covid didn’t stop Alice. Mom passed on June 10, 2024, at 11:11 A.M. I was sitting with her as she took her last breath. I am proud she is my Mom. Now she is at peace with her beloved Gordon. Thank you to all the Staff and Volunteers at The Waterford Seniors’ Community in Tsawwassen, for all the love and care you gave Alice. It will never be forgotten. Always and forever, Mom. Love, Barbara

Florence Winnifred Cullen (nee Tait) January 13, 1925 - June 3, 2025
With much sadness we mourn the passing of Flo, a few months after her 100th birthday. She will always be lovingly remembered by her son Gary Cullen (Karoline); her granddaughter Kelsey Spires (Cam Spires, Naomi, and Willa); and her grandson Erik Madsen (Audrey Ann Lavallee); as well as relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her daughter Cathrine Madsen (2007) and her husband Raymond Cullen (2008). Flo was born on the Tait family farm in Richmond, B.C. She married Ray in 1946, and they lived on the farm until moving to Tsawwassen with their children in 1966. Flo was very artistic. In her youth, she was an accomplished accordion player and played in a large accordion band. Gary fondly recalls her playing boogie woogie on the piano and accordion. She enjoyed oil painting and painted landscapes, animal portraits, and flowers. She took many home movies, first with her 8mm movie camera and later with a video camera. Her family certainly values the memories she preserved. Flo loved gardening, and her summer flower gardens were a sight to behold. She always had animals in her life and had many much-loved cats who walked the garden with her. Even at 100 years old, she kept in touch with friends and family via email, wrote messages on Facebook, and streamed shows from her iPad to her T . A far cry from when radio was the only entertainment when she was a kid in the 1920s and 30s.
We are saddened to announce the death of husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Bob Grand-Scrutton, who died unexpectedly while asleep in his favourite chair after a busy day out. He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Sheila; daughters Alison (Byng Giraud) and Catherine; grandchildren Delenn and Atticus Giraud; brother Edward, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and relatives in the UK and USA. Bob was born in the village of Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England, on May 12, 1937, just two years before the outbreak of WWII. His early life was marred by the absence of his father, who was serving in North Africa and Italy, and who would not return to his family until late 1946, when Bob was nine years old. The following years were marked by hardship with continuing rationing and scarcity of food and goods. After secondary school, Bob apprenticed as a wooden boat builder until he was called up for national service, where he served aboard a British Army landing craft for two years. On a short leave, he was introduced to a young woman, a certain Miss Sheila Brown, by Dennis McCarthy (later a well-known radio personality on BBC Radio Nottingham and recipient of the Order of the British Empire). Bob and Sheila were married on June 10, 1961, at Christchurch Cinderhill Church (C of E), Nottinghamshire and after registering at a Government of Canada emigration office in Leeds, left for Edmonton, Alberta, in April of 1962, where Bob had a job waiting. Their daughter Alison was welcomed in 1963, and two years later, almost to the day, daughter Catherine arrived. Not surprisingly, wooden boats were not in great demand in Edmonton, so in 1967, the family moved to Vancouver, where Bob worked for Davidson Manufacturing Ltd on West Georgia Street, which, among other types of watercraft, manufactured lifeboats for BC Ferries. In 1969, the family moved from Vancouver to Ladner to be close to BC Packers’ brand new head office in Steveston, where Sheila would climb the corporate ladder. He was always a proud supporter of his wife’s successful career. Once again, the demand for wooden boats declined, and Bob turned his talents to finishing carpentry, using his meticulous craftsmanship at various companies creating cabinetry, bespoke furniture and store fixtures. In 1977, he spent many months restoring the Ladner Pioneer Library after a devastating fire. Bob will be remembered as a gentle, cheerful man. He loved his adopted country, and was determined to become as “Canadian” as possible. Throughout his daughters’ elementary school years, he insisted that the family gather in the living room every Saturday evening in the winter to watch “Hockey Night in Canada.” At the age of forty, he decided to learn to ice skate, much to both his daughters’ deep embarrassment, because ice hockey is Canada’s national sport.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Augustine House and Haven House for their care of Flo.
In his later years, Bob developed a passion for amateur photography. He was a longtime member of the Delta Photo Club and enjoyed the creative community he found there. Bob will be deeply missed by his family and community for his enthusiasm, curiosity, imagination and enduring positive outlook.
No service by request. In lieu of flowers, please consider honouring Flo’s memory and her love of animals with a donation to the BC SPCA.
A celebration of Bob’s memorable life will be held on Saturday, June 21, from 1:00 - 3:00pm. Please email ag-s@telus.net for location. In lieu of flowers, donations to Delta Hospital Auxiliary are welcome.

Barbara Horgan With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our Mom and Gramma Barbara Horgan. Born in North Bay, Ontario, she passed away at Ladner, BC, at the age of 89 years with her daughter by her side. Barbara and her husband Jim moved with their young family to Ladner in 1969 from Toronto and raised their family in a home that was full of love, friends, pets and laughter. She volunteered and worked at the Delta Museum for many years and then volunteered at the Delta Hospital Thrift Shop for many more. She was a member of the Ladner United Church and enjoyed many friendships there. Mom was a kind and gentle person, an artist, and an avid reader. She loved animals and children, and she was a lot of fun. She was a good friend and a devoted and loving mom and Gramma, and she will be missed and remembered with love always. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Reginald and Kathleen Johnson and her husband of 57 years, Jim. She is survived by her daughter Jill (Doug); grandchildren Justin, William and Rebecca; son Tim; and granddaughters Chasta and Christina. Barbara’s ashes were laid to rest beside Jim at Boundary Bay Cemetery. There was no service as she requested, but if you would like to remember her, you could make a small donation to a charity that serves children or animals. Rest in Peace, Mom. We love you.
March 5, 1926 - May 26, 2025
Beryl Lilian Rose Germann
Frank, aged 99, passed away peacefully after a long, active, and meaningful life filled with love, laughter, and purpose.
Beryl was born in London, England. She grew up during WW2 with lots of interesting stories during those years. After receiving her nursing certificate, she emigrated to Canada in 1958, arriving in Montreal. From there she headed west through Calgary and landed in Vancouver. There she met and married her husband Willi in 1961 and embarked on a four-month-long honeymoon around the border of the USA. The lovebirds left from NYC to London. There they would spend time with her family to get to know Willi. After the birth of their first child, they decided to spend time with Willi's family in Switzerland for her to get to know them. A return to Vancouver happened in 1966, where they settled permanently. Their second child was born in 1967, and from then on, it was a busy life. Beryl used her nursing certificate to work as a stenographer. She ended her career at Delta Hospital. In the meantime, she was busy with Girl Guides, gardening, hockey, and tai-chi. In 1983, she joined the Delta Music Makers and played flute for over 30 years. Many concerts, fantastic trips and friendships were made. After the tragic loss of their son Cliff, DMM were a huge support. Her most prized passions were a love of photos and album making, family history, journaling, painting and gardening. Her sense of humour, wit and easygoing attitude will be sorely missed by all who knew her. We will celebrate her the same day as her beloved Willi on Saturday, July 5, at 1pm at Kirkland House in Ladner. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to a charity of your own choice.
At age 18, he joined the Canadian Army during WWII, volunteering to serve overseas in Germany and Japan. The war ended just before he was deployed—a twist he often recounted with humor, joking that the enemy surrendered as soon as they heard he was coming. That sense of humour remained central to his character throughout his life.
January 18, 1937 - May 18, 2025
Love’s greatest gift is remembrance
He worked as a sales executive for Carlton Cards, a career that took him across Canada and the U.S. before settling with his family in Tsawwassen in 1971. Known for his boundless energy, sharp wit, and relentless optimism, he stayed active well into his late 80s—walking daily and starting each morning with 50 pushups. One of his favorite sayings was, “everything in moderation”—including his daily rum and coke: “short glass, no ice.” A talented speaker and natural entertainer, he was a dedicated Toastmaster who emceed over 100 events. His jokes—often cheeky but always warm and kind— brought joy to many. He was generous with his time and deeply loved making others smile. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Teresa, in 2018. Together, they built a joyful, loving family. He was preceded by his son, Kevin, in 2022. He is survived by 4 children and 11 grandchildren: - Lynn (predeceased by Bob) and their daughters Mikayla & Cheyenne; - Mike and Rose and their children Lindsay & Sean - Kevin’s daughter, Chelsea - Karen (predeceased by Jonathan) and their sons Daniel, Benjamin, & Aaron - Susanne and John and their children Madeline, Sydney, & Dylan He was also blessed with 3 great-grandchildren, and one more on the way. His family deeply cherished their time with him and often joked that he might just live forever. He will be remembered for his vitality, kindness, and the inspiring spirit he shared with all who knew him. The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff at Augustine House for their care, joy, and dignity during his final years. Special thanks go to his nurses, recreation therapists Joanne & Tim, and Jessie for all their love and attention.
Jean L Bauck Jean L Bauck passed peacefully to the next level on May 21, 2025 in Delta, British Columbia at the age of 94. Born in Edmonton on May 15, 1931 to Lewis and Evelyn Duplessis, Jean moved to Vancouver at a young age. She attended Lord Roberts Elementary and Kitsilano High School. In 1953, she married Evans Bauck in Vancouver, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in love and family. In 1956, Jean and Evans moved with their growing family to Richmond. In 1967, they settled in Ladner - a community she called home for the remainder of her life and cherished deeply. She was known for her quiet strength, enduring love and deep connections. Jean was predeceased by her parents, her brother Karle Hoth, and her beloved husband Evans. She is lovingly remembered by her sons Dean, Garret (Hien), and Wade; her ‘blended’ daughter Delaine (Bob); and her grandchildren Cara, Garret, Derek, Alvine, Aleah, and Dalli. She will be missed, and her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held later this summer.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
In Loving Memory of Paramjit Singh Hothi 1934 ~ 2025 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paramjit in the quiet hours of the morning of June 4th
Havanese Puppies $1,700
Funeral will be held at 10am on June 13 at Riverside Funeral Home in Delta followed by Antim Ardaas at Nanaksar Gurdwara in Richmond. Born in India to Amar Singh & Charn Kaur, Paramjit's life was shaped by perseverance, humility, and unwavering devotion to family and faith. In 1969, he left behind his beloved parents and sisters—Daljit Kaur, Manjit Kaur, and Swarnjit Kaur—to begin a new chapter in Canada with his wife, Malkiat Kaur, and their young family. The journey was challenging, marked by sacrifice and resilience, but driven by hope for a better future. He embraced Canada his new home & proudly became a Canadian citizen in 1976. A man deeply rooted in the Sikh values of honest living, humility, and selfless service (Seva), Paramjit lived with quiet purpose and spiritual devotion. He was a devoted husband, father of five daughters, grandfather, and great-grandfather—a guiding light whose steady presence shaped generations. Though he left behind the farmlands of his homeland, his connection to the earth never faded. A passionate gardener, Paramjit’s skill with plants became legendary, culminating in a moment of local fame when his giant squash was featured in a seed company’s catalogue. He nurtured his garden with the same care and patience he gave his family. A man of few words and deep wisdom, Paramjit’s strength lay in his quiet presence, thoughtful advice, and curious mind. A lifelong learner, he explored traditional remedies, mastered woodworking, and became a self-taught craftsman whose creations grace homes near and far. He was also a collector of cookbooks and approached each new interest with joy and dedication. Paramjit’s legacy is one of love, honour, and humility. He lived a life of deep integrity and quiet impact. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will live on in the lives he touched, the values he passed down, and the love he shared so generously. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. In lieu of flowers, a tribute donation can be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation as a lasting testament to his generosity & quiet contributions to the community.
