Remembering a life well lived
Honouring our dearly loved family members at the time of their death is mixed with many layers of emotion, past experiences, family dynamics and social expectations. My father died on Feb. 24, one day before his 62nd wedding anniversary and two months before his 90th birthday. He lived a long, full and faith filled life. It was good to go home to New Brunswick to be with family, to share stories as we looked through piles of photos, receive many lifelong friends and acquaintances at the formal visitation at the funeral home and to plan the funeral service held at the church mom and dad attended. a lot of people through his personal, professional and church life. As a minister, walking through this passage of life with many families and friends, I often hear comments after a memorial
service like, “I didn’t know those things about their life.” It is a gift to have known a lot about my father’s life, but there were a few new insights that I learned through conversations with people I haven’t seen for many years. I am also thankful for the wonderful support spoken, written and offered in practical ways from colleagues in ministry and church community members as they stepped into the gap during my absence. It is a real affirmation of the message we hear in John 13: 35: “This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples — when they see the love you have for one another.”
