The City of Delta moved a step closer to having a new Official Community Plan (OCP) after council granted third reading for the major update following a public hearing that lasted several hours on Monday.

Around 50 speakers spoke at the session at Municipal Hall, with less in favour and the majority opposed. Most of those speaking against the proposed OCP were Tsawwassen residents who do not want the potential of high-rises in the town centre core.

Several speaking against the plan suggested new buildings 12 storeys or under would be appropriate with a couple of speakers saying the city should allow no

more than six storeys in the OCP. Several reiterated the call for the city to only focus on low-rises and so-called “gentle density” as a way for Delta to meet its housing target, and also questioned the process they contend is rushed.

One resident spoke of the need to preserve the “quaintness and charm” of Tsawwassen and another spoke about their concern losing their quality of life. Others also questioned the affordability of condos in high-rises, while others claimed council was catering to developers.

Some also said they are not opposed to development but demanded responsible development.

Those in favour said the OCP is a good, proactive plan that centres densification in the

appropriate areas, noting the city is in dire need of more housing variety, especially helping keep young people from being

forced to leave the community.

One resident made note that the community has changed since the

OCP had its last major update almost 40 years ago and the city needs to adapt.

Suggestions were also made by several residents, including the city adding more co-op housing and accommodations for older adults.

North Delta resident Kathleen Higgins, a longtime advocate of small housing, who had four small homes for her family members on what was one, single-family lot, said the process for homeowners who want to redevelop is still complex and costly. She suggested pre-approved plans, lowering or eliminating fees and the city participating in home ownership programs.

After the speakers concluded, staff noted a pro-

“As one mayor, I take great exception to being micro-managed. We are being micro-managed by the provincial government and ignored by the federal government.

The federal government hasn’t provided a nickel,

or a cent, to Delta…it’s all political,” said Harvie.

Coun. Dylan Kruger said the majority of projected growth in the region will happen elsewhere but Delta is still projected to need to accommodate another 40,000 people over the next 30 years, adding every city has a role to play when it comes to housing solutions.

“Contrary to popular belief, it’s not ‘build it and they will come’, they are coming already.…

And yet, we have to do our part. We can’t build a wall around Delta and make the rest of the region pay for it. That kind of exclusionary rhetoric has no place in a welcoming or inclusive community,” said Kruger.

“There’s a reason Delta was placed on the provincial naughty list.

We’re one of only 10 cities in British Columbia given mandatory housing targets because, by objective standards, we

Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) has reached another step in treaty implementation as 11 parcels of land in west Delta are in the process of being added to Tsawwassen jurisdiction.

The properties in the Brunswick Point area are adjacent to the northwest corner of TFN lands and straddle 34th Street.

However, the farmers leasing the properties, which are already owned

by TFN, shouldn’t notice any difference once the transfer of jurisdiction from the City of Delta to TFN is completed later

this year.

“There are no plans of any changes. We want to keep building on the good relationship we have with the lessees, and farming like that is important for us. It’s a (food) source for our members, plus also for the outside community and future generations.

Farming is important for TFN,” said TFN Chief Laura Cassidy. “We just want to continue working with the lessees. We want to establish longterm relationships with the farmers and share their values around food security and sustainability.”

The properties are already within the Agricultural Land Reserve and will remain in the reserve once incorporated into TFN territory.

According to a news release, the TFN Final Agreement signed in 2009, sets out the process for the TFN to acquire and incorporate specified lands in the Brunswick Point area, “that were historically governed by TFN prior to colonization.

“Brunswick Point is deeply rooted in the history, culture and heritage of the Tsawwassen First Nation and continues to connect Tsawwassen peoples to our ancestors, stories, lands and waters that sustain our community and life,” the release said.

That acquisition is part of the reconciliation process with Indigenous people.

“So it’s pretty important to us. We see it as pretty positive and

important for our members,” Cassidy added.

Delta Mayor George Harvie said the Brunswick Point lands play a significant role in Tswawwassen First Nation history and culture.

“We are committed to reconciliation and will continue to foster and collaborate with Tsawwassen First Nation to support this important milestone,” Harvie said. “We believe that through respectful cooperation, we can ensure a smooth transition for residents and strengthen our relationship with the Tsawwassen First Nation.”

TFN is working with both senior governments - the City of Delta and Metro Vancouver to incorporate the lands.

City starting public input on new Winskill centre SANDOR GYARMATI

The City of Delta is about to launch a public feedback process on the plan to replace the Winksill Aquatic and Fitness Centre with a new facility.

Public engagement is to help shape the design for the new Tsawwassen facility that will cost in the $120-to-$130-million range.

Council last month gave the go-ahead for staff to start consultations with user groups and residents after agreeing to have a new facility built rather than renovating the existing building, which opened in the mid-1970s.

The city notes that a multi-phase process has been designed that will

ensure interested parties have the information and opportunities they need to participate meaningfully in planning efforts.

The first phase is to inform the community about the need for a new facility, the work that has been completed to date and the process going forward, including community engagement.

The second phase will get underway once the contract is awarded to the architect. That phase of engagement will invite input on key features such as lanes, leisure pool and fitness centre features and facility location within the park.

The input gathered in the second phase will be used to finalize the scope and detailed design of

the facility. The detailed design will be shared with user groups and the community in the third phase for further input on the aesthetics.

The anticipated timeline would see groundbreaking in 2025 with the new facility opening in 2027, at which time the old building would close.

“There are additional recreation facility upgrades and expansions needed to meet the growth in the city beyond Winskill. Once the Winskill replacement progresses to the construction stage, staff will commence planning and engagement with the community to identify recreation facility needs for other parts of the city,” a staff report notes.

Province, feds close to deal on tunnel funding, says Delta MP PHIL MELNYCHUK

It’s not in the $53-billion federal budget announced last week, but money will flow for the new Fraser River tunnel, planned for 2030.

Delta Liberal MP Carla Qualtrough told the Optimist that the federal and provincial governments have been working on a funding agreement for the project.

“We are very close to reaching a deal with the province on tunnel funding,” Qualtrough said, adding that it will be funded through the fall economic statement. “It’s definitely going to happen before the provincial election (Oct. 19) and I would say significantly sooner than that.”

She couldn’t say how

much money is involved but with the federal money, the top priority will be adding the northbound access to the tunnel at River Road.

Delta Coun. Dylan Kruger however remains skeptical.

“We’re coming on nine years later and not to have it as a line item in the budget is concerning,” he said.

A bridge could have been built two years ago, for a fraction of the cost, he pointed out.

Kruger said that a northbound access from River Road is needed to keep commuters from all having to jam on to Ladner Trunk Road to access the tunnel.

And the cost for adding a northbound access, part of the original plan, is a “rounding error” in

completed has been the biggest infrastructure failure of senior government in the last 10

years,” Kruger said.

Hwy. 99 is part of a national trade corridor that connects to Vancouver International Airport, Deltaport and the U.S. border, to say nothing of thousands of commuters who need to cross the Fraser River daily, Kruger said, and with a federal election coming next year, this is one of the last opportunities to present it before the election.

If both senior governments want Delta to accept more housing, then they have to upgrade infrastructure, he added.

Qualtrough said that Tuesday’s budget was aimed at fairness for the younger generation.

“This budget is really focused on younger Canadians and the fact

that our economy isn’t really working for them in particular,” she said.

Affordability and housing are two major issues the budget tries to address.

She noted that a renters’ bill of rights will require landlords to show a property’s rental history, while a person’s rental history can be used as part of their credit rating to qualify for a mortgage, and there are low-interest loans of up to $40,000 for building secondary suites.

She noted that $463 million is now allotted to small craft harbours, for which Delta could apply, to help pay for secondary dredging of the Fraser River. There’s also another $28 million for CBSA to search incoming shipping containers.

Delta pushing for more secondary suites SANDOR GYARMATI

The City of Delta is making a further push to add more secondary suites.

Council last week approved several bylaw amendments aimed at removing barriers for owners leasing or renting a secondary suite.

The changes include eliminating suite rental permits, rental permit licence fees and penalties, while granting authority to the general manager of development to issue and/or revoke suite occupancy permits and approve suite decommissioning work.

The fees and penalties equate to approximately $140,000 in annual revenue for the city that would

be made up through other efficiencies, a report to council notes.

New legislation will require municipalities to update their bylaws for all residential singledetached zoned lots to allow a minimum of one secondary suite and/or one accessory dwelling unit.

There are approximately 3,700 secondary suites in Delta that have an occupancy permit, with about 2,700 having rental permits, according to the report.

As a further measure, and in response to a mandated housing target given to Delta by the province, the city is also launching what it calls the Home Suite Home program to encourage homeowners to add a

secondary suite to their existing homes.

The program includes a limited-time offer for the waiver of building permit application fees, as well as a free preapplication process with the option of having a city “Secondary Suite Ambassador” attend a secondary suite before the permitting process begins.

The intent of the service is to help homeowners better understand the process in achieving an approved suite, the report explains, adding the estimated savings to the property owner is approximately $400 to add a unit to their existing homes.

The usual rules will still apply including that a secondary suite cannot

be strata-titled or sold.

Only one secondary suite is permitted by the BC Building Code in a single-detached dwelling.

A duplex may have two suites, however only one suite is allowed per side and must be in the lower part of the duplex.

During a staff presentation on the proposed update for the Official Community Plan (OCP), it was noted one of the recommended action items for the city to undertake is lobbying the province to change the Building Code to allow more than one secondary suite per single-detached dwelling.

Delta over the past few years has already been making several zoning

and OCP changes to facilitate more units, one of the strategies outlined within the city’s Housing Action Plan.

Four years ago, council approved eliminating the requirement for a minimum lot width of 49-feet (15 metres) for a house to be eligible for a suite and allowing suites on properties that can fit three on-site parking spaces regardless of parking configuration.

Council last year, also approved an amendment that would allow the addition of secondary suites in duplexes, following changes in the BC Building Code.

minimum 33-squaremetre floor area requirement for a secondary suite as well as removing the maximum 90-squaremetres for a suite.

Meanwhile, this summer all land-use contracts in Delta will be terminated, revealing homes’ underlying zoning which permit secondary suites.

Mostly created in the early 1970s, thousands of land-use contracts were signed at the time of a property’s original subdivision, but those old land-use contracts did not permit secondary suites.

When you want to feed hungry children in this country, you realize Canada isn’t built well for it. We will find out how in the next months.

For five years, the Justin Trudeau government has been promising, but failing to furnish a national school food program. Its NDP coalition partner has been strangely subdued on what you’d think it would consider a principled, principal need.

Now, with an election looming and in a beleaguered position not far removed from one of a lame duck, the prime minister has decided it’s time for a five-year, $1-billion school food program to feed what he says will be 400,000 children starting this fall.

The chances are slim, if any, of anything approaching the program’s ambition in food making its way to empty stomachs starting a few months from now. The structure of the Canadian federation and the constitutional division of powers work against its success.

In this case, the food program money is federal and how it would be delivered is provincial. The two levels might as well be in different countries speaking different languages.

The history of the federal government traipsing into provincial territory is one of antagonism and protectionism, of differing and duplicative approaches and curiously customized mechanisms. Think housing, health care, child care and literacy – the stuff of well-being, the

And every day that each defends its turf, millions of children are hurt.

Visit any elementary school today and you will find children who didn’t eat before they arrived for classes. They won’t learn as well that day. Their minds will be fuzzier, their bodies won’t grow the way they could. They will be prone to more health problems later in life, and to poorer education outcomes, and therefore in all probability to lower incomes. The absence of early-life nutritious food perpetuates multi-generational poverty in ways we can’t fully appreciate.

We can’t clearly understand how many children live with food insecurity in Canada.

Estimates range from one in three to one

in five. Experts say a sizeable portion of the problem is hidden culturally or emotionally as a shameful sign of weakness.

It is a national disgrace to have hungry children.

Canada is the only G7 country without a national school food program. The national Coalition for Healthy School Food ranks Canada 37th out of 41 prosperous countries.

Apart from direct support, we lack any serious co-ordination to mitigate food waste that, believe it or not, exceeds half of all food production. Whether it’s on farms or in supermarkets, we send an extraordinary amount of perfectly healthy food to landfill.

Full disclosure: I’m on the board of the KidSafe Project Society, in its 30th year, which works with the Vancouver School Board in seven sites when school isn’t in session to provide meals and activities. I grew up with food insecurity, was lucky enough to escape it, and can vouch that the need is real and the results tangible of healthier, safer children when food is available. The demand far exceeds the resources, sad to say.

You don’t need to be a fan of this government to acknowledge that any step any government takes to furnish greater food security is a good step.

Any obstacle in its way is an abuse of power. Let’s see if this latest attempt can defy the barriers.

“Sorry about the election, would you like to write for the Optimist?”

That was November 2011, and I had just lost in my bid to become a Delta school trustee in spectacular fashion. That was the topic of my first column.

When I first started, it was quite an effort spend a week researching topics, a week writing and editing, submitting it, relax for a few days, and start over. Now, I find myself waking up

on Tuesday mornings, realizing I have a column due and getting it done in about 20 minutes.

Some are better than others, which my wife will remind me of when I read them to her before sending them in.

But after 12 and a half years and 200 columns, I think it’s time for someone else’s Community Comment to take my place.

I will greatly miss writing this column. Tuesday deadlines? Not so much.

Ted told me I could write whatever I wanted,

I’ve written about spring clean-up, elections, vet-

erans, the great work of Deltassist and, like everyone else, the COVID-19 pandemic.

I don’t get a lot of feedback, the occasional letter to the editor or online comment. Much as I tried to convince them otherwise, my kids remind me I’m not famous.

Sometimes people recognize me, but they don’t know where from. When I tell them I write for the Optimist, they say, “No, that’s not it …”

My biggest fan is Cory, at Save-on Foods, in Tsawwassen, high praise

from a champion Special Olympian (I’ve written about my love for the Special Olympics, too.)

OCP a step in right direction Editor: Something needs to be done to allow Delta to flourish with a variety of residents, from all ages, stages of life, socioeconomic backgrounds and professions.

The proposed Official Community Plan is a step in the right direction. We are very excited to see up to four to six units per property in all residential areas as per B.C.’s guidelines.

This, in our opinion, is the best and most needed change for Delta, all neighbourhoods, not just town centres, sharing in the growth of our city and welcoming new neighbours.

These changes offer homeowners greater autonomy and play a crucial role in addressing our housing crisis by promoting small-scale densification across the city.

We would also like to applaud the concept of re-legalizing residential “local commercial uses” to bring back

We are excited to see mixed-use development proposed to put land to good use, for people and commerce. Surrounded by so many natural resources, we must build creatively and yes, up, in some places, to meet the needs of our growing city. Creative ideas for limited land.

Tunnel name should remain Editor: I strongly agree with Doug Massey (Optimist, letters, April 11) that it is in the best public interest to retain the tunnel name in honour of his father, George Massey.

It was Massey Sr.’s idea to build a tunnel under the south arm of the Fraser River, to link Ladner with Lulu Island (Richmond).

After arriving in Ladner in 1936, George actively looked for and found a solution to the slow, inadequate crossing of the Ladner Ferry.

His answer was found by

reading an article about the Maas River Tunnel in Holland, the first sunken tube tunnel in the world.

He contacted the Danish engineering company responsible, resulting in a company engineer being sent to Delta to do a feasibility study.

With a positive response, George championed his innovative idea of a Fraser River tunnel to all levels of government. The successful result was the Deas Island Tunnel, built 1956 to 1959. The tunnel was renamed the George Massey Tunnel in 1967.

Preserving the name, would demonstrate respect to George Massey, a local Delta resident who was the person most responsible for the building of the tunnel.

It is important that Delta honours those who came before us, to contribute and succeed in service to the community, by naming appropriate Delta sites in their memory.

Kudos to Delta’s emergency nurses Editor: Last week, I was in a bed near the Delta Hospital ER nurse’s station, between two older gentlemen whoseemed to have memory problems.

The three of us were only separated by curtains and I could hear what

was being said.

I do not think it would be appropriate for me to mention what I heard.

However, I will say that the nurses showed a lot of understanding and patience with these two patients.

Why not re-open Delta Manor?

Editor: I read in the April 18 edition of the Optimist, that the Delta School District is planning an $8-million addition to Ladner Elementary, for six more classrooms.

Couldn’t the district re-open Delta Manor (or even just part of it) and accommodate way more students for a far less costly outlay?

The Ladner Elementary catchment

includes a good part of the former Delta Manor catchment, so lots of the potential students must live in that Delta Manor area.

It just seems very wasteful to spend that kind of money when you have perfectly good elementary school sitting only partly used by adult education. I hope this plan is rethought.

We are all lucky to live here Editor: When I read the letters to the editor section in the April 18th edition of the Optimist, I noticed several letters of gratitude for our community members, and I found it so heart-warming.

Later, while shopping at London Drugs, I realized my wallet was miss-

Lane dividers worth keeping

Editor: Please keep the lane dividers up approaching and just inside the George Massey Tunnel.

The enclosed space is a legitimate concern for some travellers who may feel frustrated and under pressure as we wait for our tunnel to be upgraded.

Recently, these temporary, collapsible pickets functioned as somewhat of a deterrent to impatient law breakers who constantly weave back and forth over the solid

line. Egocentric drivers in a hurry and following others too closely, were less likely to use speed as an intimidation tactic to pressure cautious, sensible citizens wishing to forestall unnecessary collisions.

A big thank you is owed to the many lawabiding drivers who routinely exercise restraint and keep space by refraining from following too closely behind other drivers.

Are you a tortoise or a hare? How can we cur-

tail tailgating and keep a safe distance between careless drivers who may rush through, once inside the enclosure?

Hopefully, observing common courtesy could be the new normal for navigating under the Fraser River.

Can you learn to take it slowly and be respectful?

It just requires patience and kindness to one another as the tunnel upgrade progresses.

Delta Police are seeking witnesses as they continue to investigate a serious single-vehicle collision that occurred on English Bluff Road south of First Avenue on April 12.

Police say a black Chrysler 300 left the roadway, crossed a residential front yard, and rolled over into a tree, coming to rest on its roof. The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle received serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Delta Police collision investigators are now seeking witnesses, dashcamera footage, cellphone video, Tesla video and Sentry mode captures, and CCTV video of the collision and the pre-collision driving of this Chrysler 300. If you were in the area or have any information, police need your help.

Cases of workplacerelated exposure resulting in disease and injuries remain highly underreported.

That was one of the messages conveyed to Delta council at its April 8 meeting from CUPE Local 454 president Sam Abulail during his presentation on the upcoming Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured on the Job, on April 28.

Representing unionized City of Delta employees and police civilian staff and speaking on behalf of the New Westminster and District Labour Council, Abulail noted that in 2022, almost 1,000 people in Canada died as a result of their work.

e pause every April 28th to remember workers killed and those who still suffer from a work-related injury or illness, their lives and livelihoods forever compromised.

“Too many families lose loved ones to occupational diseases, and we know those numbers are just the tip of the iceberg, because they include only those fatalities accepted by the workers’ compensation system. In cases of workplace exposure to toxic chemicals or materials like asbestos, effects only become apparent months, years or decades later,” he said.

Meanwhile, cases of workplace injuries and accidents are also “severely” under reported, Abulail noted.

Abulail also noted that in 2022, the most recent year data is available, WorkSafe BC reported people missed 3.99 million days of work due to work-related incidents and disease.

WorkSafe BC also

reported they accepted 191 work-related death claims.

Abulail said education is key to prevention, especially for young workers.

Teachers and support workers in schools and programs, such as the BC Federation of Labour’s Alive After 5, together with an employer commitment to training, are critical in ensuring young workers are not only safe at work, but also won’t face life-long impacts from preventable workplace injuries.

They are also calling on all levels of government for accountability for workplace safety and health, he added.

CUPE 454, in conjunction with the mayor, will be holding a ceremony starting at 10:45 a.m., this Sunday.

Delta School District axes film academy SANDOR GYARMATI

It’s a blow for aspiring young actors, producers and those wanting to learn about visual effects for the film industry.

The Delta School District this week notified parents that the Delta Film Academy, operating out of the Delta Manor facility in Ladner, will not be operating for the 2024/25 school year.

“Due to declining student enrolment, we are unable to sustain the program, leading us to the difficult decision to close it,” the notice stated.

The plan to shut down the academy, which held an open house just last week, was not specified when the school district released its proposed operating budget, also last week.

Local cyclists are so happy with some recent bike network improvements, they’ve told Delta council how they feel.

In an April 15 letter, the Delta committee of HUB Cycling said fixing gaps in the cycling network allows families to cycle or walk to schools, shops, parks, and workplaces.

“These connections are essential for our community’s health and livability,” said the letter from Neil Pope and Roel Schootman.

It pointed out five recent improvements that have made a big difference for those who cycle Delta streets.

Creating a culvert bridge at the foot of 34th Street allows a re-connection of greenway dikes between Tsawwassen, Ladner and Tsawwassen First Nation.

Upgrading the culvert at 56th Street and Sixth Avenue gives a better connection between

Pope said the first project on 34th Street means the new culvert bridge spares cyclists from having to wade into the ditch to get across.

“And now, we have a nice, beautiful bridge … going over the dike, so we’re really thrilled to see that happen. That was something we asked for in the past,” he said.

“That’s a huge benefit for

the cycling and the hiking community.”

The second key project was installing a culvert bridge over a ditch at 56th Street and Sixth Avenue, allowing cyclists and pedestrians easier access to the multiuse path and creating a seamless route from Southlands to Winskill Aquatic Centre.

“And now, we have a nice connection to Winskill … all the way from Southlands to Winskill,” he said.

Reconnecting the dike top near 46A Street has also been done after several years of work, he pointed out.

There are long-term plans to improve cycling and pedestrian access from Ladner Village to Westham Island Bridge.

The city is aware of River Road West’s popularity and its poor condition, he added.

“But that’s still a ways off. In the long run, they

want to improve River Road West which is a big issue for the cycling community … and it’s very actively used by cyclists,” he said.

That’s a big project and depends on what happens to the dikes, he added.

Pope said there are two approaches to building cycling lanes, one is simply by painting a line for a bike lane on a road shoulder if there’s enough space. The other is building a multi-use pathway.

Both approaches have pros and cons, depending on the location.

Generally, commuter “Ultimately, we just need to have a combination of both,” Pope said, adding that creating bike lanes can be simple and relatively cheap.

“So, if you just use bollards and green paint, the cost is super low and the effectiveness is very good on a lot of situations.”

The issue is when a bike lane takes away parking.

When no one is losing their parking, it’s a no brainer to mark off a bike lane on a road shoulder (providing there’s enough space), Pope said.

With pieces of the pedalling puzzle being put into place, HUB next wants to see improvement in wayfinding, or signs, that show cyclists and motorists the major cycling paths.

Sidekick Players to perform at Theatre BC Zone Festival

After more than a 20-year absence, Sidekick Players are entering the Theatre BC Zone Festival.

This year the festival at the Langley Playhouse. Sidekick is entering their very successful play, Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by Carroll Lefebvre.

There will be a special performance on May 4, at The Tsawwassen Arts Centre at 8 p.m. to help with the costs of entering the festival. This will be the same cast but a different set-up.

“The Langley Playhouse stage is smaller than ours and this brings some adjustments and challenges,” said Lefebvre.

“We are going to map out their dimensions on our stage and work accordingly, so this performance is also a test run for

our crew.”

The festival has a whole set of rules to follow and one of them is a four-hour timeslot to erect the set, decorate the set, get the lighting and sound design set and a brief time for actors to walk the stage.

“There is no time at all for a rehearsal on the stage, so the cast will be working in the space for the first time at the festival performance in front of the adjudicator, Nicole Nattrass. It can get hectic and intimidating at the same time,” added Lefebvre.

Lefebvre has no doubt her cast will do an incredible job at the festival performance on May 20, but for now, they need to sharpen their skills and do one more performance for our community.

This concert, aptly titled In The Key of Spring, takes place at the KinVillage seniors centre, 5410 10th Ave., and begins at 2:30 p.m.

The concert will feature a wide variety of popular and classic tunes designed to get you in a mood to celebrate this new spring. And you’ll see why the band, one of the oldest in B.C., prides itself in being able to play

many styles of music from pop, rock, classical, marches, musicals, as well as movie scores.

In fact, Delta Concert Band been playing this diverse mixture of musical styles since it was founded by a small group of dedicated and enthusiastic musicians on Oct. 29, 1964.

You’ll also see — and hear — how its 40-plus dedicated amateur musicians who come from a variety of occupations and professions while ranging in age from 19 to 90-plus years, quickly meld under veteran Music Director Jim Tempest into a cohesive ensemble that consis-

tently presents an entertaining repertoire which features something for everyone.

The band is also putting the finishing touches on programs in preparation for the rest of the spring and summer season, which includes the always popular, admission-free Ladner Bandfest where it joins host Delta Music Makers and many other concert bands from the Lower Mainland and beyond for two full days of continuous music, June 1 and 2 at Memorial Park.

“Busy, but a good busy.”

Have you ever said that when someone asked you how you are? I have, and I can’t count how many times others have said the same thing to me.

We tend to derive a sense of worth from being busy. The more we have on our calendar, the more we are needed, the more important we can feel.

Not that there’s anything wrong with being busy, but there’s busy and then there’s too busy. Too busy is when our busyness harms our health or relationships.

Sometimes the most

spiritual thing we can do is stop, rest, and refuel.

If we’re constantly busy without any chance to reset it impedes growth relationally, physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Sabbath, a Hebrew word meaning to stop or cease from work, was a Jewish Biblical imperative God gave His people after rescuing them from slavery.

Under the oppression of the Egyptian slave drivers, rest was not normative for the Hebrews.

God gave them a new way of living by adding the rhythm of sabbath to their lives. He did this because He knew they needed it.

The idea of including a regular rhythm of rest might seem quaint, a

novel idea for the weak, but really, it’s something necessary for everyone.

Some benefits include strengthened relationships, sharpened mental acuity, a chance to reflect and grow in multiple ways, a greater sense of gratitude and contentment, a reminder that the degree to which we are busy is not directly correlated to our worth and a greater connection with our Creator.

Engaging in restorative activities such as reading, meditating, spending time in nature, reading Scripture, or enjoying leisurely meals with loved ones can significantly boost physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It’s worth the effort.

Abreast in a Boat launch 2024 season from a new venue During evenings this spring, you may spot a dragon boat full of pink clad women paddling along the Ladner riverfront.

Two crews of Abreast in a Boat, the world’s first dragon boat team for breast cancer survivors, have launched their 2024 season from their new home at the Ladner Yacht Club.

The Deas Divas and Abreast with Hope have paddled locally on Deas Slough for more than 20 years and are looking forward to exploring a new arm of the Fraser River this year aboard their beloved boat, Hope Floats. The paddlers are a thriving group who demonstrate that life can be physically active after a cancer diagnosis.

After a first season in which the women benefited from the exercise as well as the rich

social connections made on the water, the breast cancer survivor dragon boat movement was born. In the nearly

30 years since, six Abreast in a Boat crews have been established in the Lower Mainland and hundreds more are carry-

ing the group’s message around the world.

Abreast with Hope paddles on Monday evenings and the Deas Divas practice on Tuesday and Thursday evenings until the end of June.

These ladies will be out there rain or shine, so if you catch a glimpse of the dragon boat, give them a wave from the Ladner Wharf or a venue along the riverfront!

Both crews would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Ladner Yacht Club for the warm welcome to their new home in Ladner.

Softball is in Olivia Malesku’s wheelhouse MARTHA PERKINS

In baseball slang, when a ball is in a batter’s wheelhouse she knows that she’ll be able to hit it far.

“It’s your best shot at being successful,” says Olivia Malesku, a former Delta Heat player who has won several national and provincial titles.

“The same goes for other things in life, too, like ‘Softball is in my wheelhouse.’ It’s where I’m comfortable or can have the most success.”

Last year, after graduating with a degree in kinesiology from the University of British Columbia, while play-

ing with the UBC Thunderbirds, Malesku opened Wheelhouse Softball in Delta. Her mission is to share her love of softball with girls and women, whether players want to pursue the sport, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of her favourite game.

“I started playing softball when I was seven,” she says. “I just fell in love with it. I had such a good experience with my coaches, but when I got to the university level, I realized that that wasn’t everybody’s experience. I want to make sure that other players have a good experience by keeping that line of good coaching going.”

the friendship of other players and improve skills.

One coach’s outlook really resonated with her: “Just be better than you were

yesterday.”

Malesku acknowledges that softball can be a slow game, especially for young players with energy to burn. That’s why she plans other skillsbuilding games within the training.

Whether players discover that, like her, they want to compete at higher levels or simply want to gain skills, Malesku tailors her training to their personal goals.

“I do strength and conditioning for girls who want to pursue college softball or just go further in their sport. I’ve been through the university system, and I have a lot of friends who play. There’s a lot of pros-and-cons

advice that I can share and give girls an idea of what to expect. There are so many options out there it can be overwhelming so hearing from someone who’s been through it is pretty beneficial.”

Malesku wants to give herself time to discover if owning a business is in her future wheelhouse.

“Now that I’m home, I want to continue coaching as much as I can and if the business grows, that would be amazing. I love it so much that it doesn’t feel like work.”

Former Optimist sports editor Mark Booth has been named Media Person of the Year by B.C. School Sports.

The award recognizes an individual in the media who has highlighted and celebrated school sport in their reporting. The nominee has continued to bring attention to BCSS, its member schools and student-athletes by

showcasing the very best of school sport in B.C. “It is an honour to be recognized by B.C. School Sports,” said Booth. “Throughout my career covering high school athletics ranks right at the top. Not only the opportunity to cover some tremendous games and student athletes but establishing relationships with the coaches that make it possible.

FREUDENREICH, Elsa Elsa Freudenreich passed on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 in Delta, BC. She was 99 years of age, and would have turned 100 on October 5, 2024.

She leaves behind her two children, Peter (Beatriz) and Christel (Joe); 4 grandchildren, Monica, Eric (Sarah), Jason and Natasha; 2 great grandchildren, Elsa and Harrison.

She was one of nine siblings born in Sielmingen, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1953 where she married her husband of 50 years - Erich Otto Freudenreich (predeceased in 2003).

They lived in Montreal (Pierrefonds), Quebec until moving to Ladner B.C. to be closer to grandchildren in 1988.

Elsa was a fantastic cook and baker that also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and travelling. All who knew her delighted in her German cakes and cookies.

Many benefited from her numerous knitting and crocheting projects.

Elsa was such a kind, loving soul and always had a happy smile. She enjoyed people, having afternoon coffee with cake and pastries. Family and friends were her greatest love. She enjoyed sharing meals together listening to everyone’s excited stories and seeing pictures of their adventures. Oma was very proud of her family.

She will be sadly missed by everyone that knew her.

To have known her, was to have loved her.

MILHOLM, Joelle It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Joelle Lorraine Milholm after a courageous battle with cancer. Joelle was a loving Wife, Mother, Granny, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Guider and friend to many. She is survived by her husband of 38 years Bill, their d aughters Sarah (Eric) and Melissa (Sheldon), two beautiful grandchildren Elsa and Harrison, mother Lorraine, sisters Michelle (Gary), Jillian, and many nieces and nephews.

Joelle was born in Come by Chance, Newfoundland to Mervyn (predeceased) and Lorraine Stanley.

Joelle worked for BC Tel/Telus for over 38 years.

Joelle dedicated over 30 years volunteering to Girl Guides and was a Girl Guide leader to both her daughters and finally her granddaughter.

Many fond memories spent at Joelle’s happy place, Lake Tyee, with friends and family where Joelle also served on the board of directors as well as volunteered for many social events. Joelle enjoyed sharing a laugh with many friends and will be dearly missed by all.

A celebration of life will be held at Harris Barn 4140 Arthur Dr in Ladner on Friday, May 3 from 3-5pm.
