ROADS TO STUDENT SUCCESS:

Dear Hornet Families,
During the course of the spring semester, our students have focused on their coursework with dedication. Faculty and staff continue to support students through various academic resources. Please encourage your student to take full advantage of the available resources and be aware of the key dates during each semester, such as midterms, registration, and finals.
At Delaware State, we understand the importance of supporting your students’ overall wellbeing. Students may experience stress from academics and other responsibilities as the semester progresses. Please remind your students that they can access counseling services, health centers, and the well-rec center. As we approach the end of the semester, students are beginning to think ahead. Some may be planning internships or preparing for summer classes, while others are excitedly anticipating graduation. If your student is graduating this year, be sure to check out our Commencement website for detailed information on ceremonies and celebrations.
Thank you for your continued support of your student’s education. Should you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. Please feel free to contact us at Thrive@desu.edu or StudentSuccess@desu.edu with any issues, academic requests, or additions you want us to address. We look forward to a successful conclusion to an enriching spring semester!
With Warm Regards,
Dr. Danielle L. Archambault, Ed.D. ACUE

The Office of Student Success (OSS) always advises students to keep an eye out while having a macro view of the semester. That being said, the Office of Records & Registration [Registrar’s Office] has released the general Final Exam Schedule.
Students should locate and review their final exam schedule.
Final exams don’t always occur in the same place, time, and day as the class.
Final grades are due on Wednesday, May 7, so please expect grades to be posted after then.
Breaks between finals are 30 minutes long. Friday, May 3, is available for makeup.
Final exams can be very hectic, but to ease students’ minds and help get them ready for these trying times, here are a few tips to be able to have a successful final exam period.
- Don't cram. Begin reviewing at least two weeks before finals. Break material into endar or planner. Block out study sessions and stick to them. Prioritize harder subjects or those with earlier exams.
Use Active Study Techniques - Summarize notes in your own words. Teach the material to someone else. Use flashcards, mind maps, or practice tests.
Join a Study Group - Collaborating can help clarify tough topics. Teaching others reinforces your own understanding.
Use Campus Resources - Attend review sessions or visit the tutoring center. Check for professor or TA office hours.
Take Breaks - Study in 25-50 minute intervals with 5-10 minute breaks (Pomodoro Technique). Helps maintain focus and prevents burnout.
Stay Healthy - Get enough sleep-especially the night before the exam. Eat brain-boosting foods (nuts, berries, eggs, leafy greens). Stay hydrated and exercise to reduce stress.
Limit Distractions - Turn off notifications, and social media, and create a quiet study space. Focus on Weak Areas - Spend extra time on challenging topics, not just on what you know. Practice Past Exams - Simulate test conditions. Familiarize yourself with the format and timing.
Reserve guest tickets: Find out if there’s a limit on how many guests can attend and request tickets.
Confirm ceremony details: Review the time, location, and any specific instructions for the ceremony.
Practice for Commencement: Attend rehearsal.
Update your resume: Add your recent achievements, internships, and skills. Start job hunting: Research job opportunities in your field and start applying. Network: Attend career fairs, and alumni events, or connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Request letters of recommendation: Ask professors, employers, or mentors for letters. Finalize post-graduation plans: Consider your next steps—graduate school, job, travel, etc.
Review student loan information: Understand your loan repayment schedule and options. Finalize your budget: Ensure you have a plan for your finances post-graduation. Consider insurance: Look into health insurance options if you're no longer covered by your parents’ plan.
Cancel/transfer school services: If you're leaving campus housing, cancel or transfer services like internet or utilities.
Change your address: Update your address for your diploma, tax forms, and other important mail.
Prepare for the move-out: Start packing up your dorm or apartment, and make arrangements for moving.
Celebrate your achievements: Plan a celebration with friends and family!
Transfer academic records: If you're transferring to another institution or graduate school, make sure your transcripts are sent.
Clear out student account access: Back up any documents, emails, or files from your school accounts.
Set up a professional email: If you haven’t already, create a professional email address (e.g., firstname.lastname@email.com).
Get involved in alumni groups: Join alumni networks for ongoing career support.
keeps her overarching dream of becoming a collegiate Athletic Director at the forefront of her aspirations.
Leah was initially drawn to the DSU campus not just because of the academic programs that are offered, but also due to her desire to grow and expand her knowledge in a campus community surrounded by people who look like her. She is the first member of her family to attend an HBCU, and firmly believes that the experience she is having at DSU is unlike any other. Being surrounded by driven and intelligent Black scholars inspires Leah daily to be the absolute best that she can be.
Outside of academics, Leah has become deeply involved in the DSU community. She serves as Ms. Blue and White for the Gamma Upsilon chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated, is an Honors Student, and is an active member of the Sport Management Organization and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She also holds the position of Social Media and Athlete Engagement Chair for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee while also working in the Athletic Department as a Media Relations Student Assistant where she handles stats, broadcasting, and writing. In her role with Media Relations, Leah enjoys collaborating to support DSU Athletes.
Leah has also represented DSU at numerous conferences, residencies, and programs. This past winter, she was honored to participate in the HBCU-Start@MiamiHerbert Program where she won Best Individual Presenter and the Esprit de Corps Award. Leah also volunteered for the Go Bowling Military Bowl through the DREAM Foundation where she had the opportunity to connect with leadership from Dover Motor Speedway with the hope of forming a partnership with DSU’s Sport Management Department.
When asked if she had any words of encouragement to share with her fellow Hornets, Leah shared, “I always say my parents, VicKeith and Tiesha, raised me to be confident. I don’t think I truly realized the importance of that until I came to college. When you work hard and believe in yourself, you are unstoppable. Dream as big as possible, work harder than everyone else around you, and know that at the end of the day, you’ve got you. I cannot wait to see how far you go.”
Leah also wished to close out her highlight with a quote that drives her in her daily life: “Your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude.” —Michelle Obama
Before joining Delaware State University, Mr. Zinzel earned a Bachelor's degree in Sport Management from Neumann University and a Master's degree in Sports Administration from the University of Louisville. Reflecting on his studies and previous employment, Mr. Zinzel often shares that he valued the opportunity to explore different states, and grow in various roles at institutions such as the University of Louisville, the University of Minnesota, and Northwestern State University. However, his ultimate goal was always to find a long-term home in the Northeast and that home for Mr. Zinzel turned out to be Delaware State University.
In his role as an Athletic Academic Advisor, Mr. Zinzel can frequently be found in the Athletics Lab in the William C. Jason Library, where he maintains an open-door policy for athletes seeking academic guidance, mentorship for their professional career paths, or simply someone to talk to about life’s many challenges. As an adjunct instructor, Mr. Zinzel supports student transition, resource utilization, and academic success through the instruction of his University Seminar classes. In addition to his professional roles, Mr. Zinzel has recently found himself back in the classroom as a student in pursuit of a Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership in Higher Education at DSU.
When asked about his leadership style, Mr. Zinzel shared, “My leadership style has changed slightly over time. I used to be a little more authoritative from the jump but I have tempered that back in recent years. Maybe it’s old age. Even at its peak, the authoritative leadership was only a small percentage of how I led. I tend to heavily lead in an affiliative or coaching style. Advisors are the guardrails and rumble strips, whilst the students are driving the cars, we try our best to keep on the road.”
When asked if there is anything that he would like to share with students and parents, Mr. Zinzel expressed that, “College comes down to how you handle your free time. Work hard, ask questions, be proactive, utilize resources on campus, and be accountable. These are the pillars of success I share with the students I work with. Doing all these things will set you farther along than most and set you up for a successful experience here. College isn’t easy, but do it right, and it can be the most fun and exciting part of your life. Cherish your time at Delaware State University.”
This past February, Michelle Hutzler, Academic Advisor from the College of Business, embraced a new experience by partnering with Integrated Academic Support Services to host two academic workshops for DSU students on Professionalism in Academics. Offered in both virtual and in-person formats, the workshops provided students with valuable insights into best practices for professional communication. Topics covered included effective email and phone use, as well as virtual etiquette for both inside and outside the classroom. The goal of these workshops was to help students enhance their academic professionalism in today’s virtual environment.

Mr. Tim Patterson and Ms. Marjorie Ramsey to present at American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference.
In June 2025, Marjorie Ramsey, Reference and Public Services Librarian, and Tim Patterson, Digitization Copy Cataloger/ Library Assistant, will present at the American Library Association’s annual conference in Philadelphia, PA.
The topic of their presentation is “Public History Meets Private Company: Digitizing a Historically Black University's Archival Photographs with Getty Images.” The library team has been working with Getty Images since the summer of 2024 to digitize DSU’s history through photographs being made available on Getty’s platform. Mr. Patterson and Ms. Ramsey will share the process of working with administrative partners, the Getty team, and library student workers on this exciting new project as one of the first five HBCUs with this opportunity.
On Friday, January 24, 2025, the Center for Teaching & Learning, in collaboration with the OSS EAB Team, held the virtual ‘EAB Training Session’ workshop hosted by Ms. Fariha Mahfuz. This session focused on using early alerts, progress reports, and strategic tools to improve facultystudent interactions and enhance student success. Ms. Mahfuz received a Certificate of Appreciation for her great efforts and supporting the training!

OSS Administrative Staff attends 2025 DAWN Leadership Summit
On March 6, 2025, Dr. Archambault (Associate Vice President, OSS) and Ms. Miner (Adm. Asst. & Budget Analyst) presented at the 2025 DAWN Leadership Summit. Their presentation, “The Golden Circle: How Transformative Leadership Inspires Action,” showcased how leaders can move beyond transactional interactions to inspire their teams. In addition, their session modeled how transformative leaders can inspire their teams to act to better serve their communities with kindness and compassion. Overall, attendees learned how transformational leadership is more than just supervising a team—it's about inspiring growth, innovation, and loyalty. Transformational leaders ignite passion, challenge the status quo, and empower individuals to achieve their full potential.

Meet our senior student workers, Clayten Thomas and Elias Harris! Clayten is a Law Studies major who will be graduating DSU this May. Elias is a New Media Arts major also graduating May 2025.
In their time working in the library, they have helped with organizing collections, assisting students at the front desk, helping with technology, helping scholars with their research by retrieving and scanning resources, and -- most recently – digitizing archival photographs to make them available online.
About his time in the library, Clayten shares, "Any job is made easier when you work with great people. This dutifully exemplifies my experience working at the William C. Jason library. My knowledge for library studies has been propelled as has my desire to delve further into such an immersive field."
Elias shares that, “Working in the library has allowed me to access and learn more about the campus history and information beyond my major. But also assisting those looking to improve their intellectual endeavors by giving them the resources they need.”
The library team congratulates Clayten and Elias on their success! We’re also anticipating hiring new student workers for Fall 2025.
Current students interested in applying for open positions are encouraged to search for ‘Library Assistant’ on DSU’s JobX website.
