VIVA MÉXICO!

¡VIVA MÉXICO!

As Latinos, September is our month. It is a time when we shine and overflow with patriotism for our beloved Mexico. We celebrate Mexico’s independence now for over 200 years, and we are proud for the strides we have made as a nation. And so, the 16th of September is a time for celebration and jubilee, so let us rejoice. We invite everyone to join in the many festivities within the city. It tends to be a day filled to the brim with celebration, so there should be no shortage of fun. If you’re in Nuevo Laredo, take a stroll through the Expomex Fair on the night of the 15th for the traditional “Grito.” Partake in the many attractions the fair has to offer as well as the many delightful treats. Of course, we can also celebrate from home, with family and friends. A huge part of our culture is our food, so cook up some delicious traditional meals such as Chiles en Nogada, pozole, tamales, mole poblano, and of course, the many iterations of cactus. Let us feast and rejoice, and celebrate one more year of independence. Viva Mexico!

LIFE

The One True Race LA ÚNICA RAZA VERDADERA BY ALEJANDRA SADA

Ú@thriftybordermomma BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS ARTICLE this will be old news, but although old before mainstream media, they will stay forever present and etched in the minds of Americans. Last month, Patrick Wood stormed into a Walmart store in El Paso Texas and cold heartedly committed a hate crime because he believes the hispanic population of America is taking over the Lone Star State. The event at El Paso made me remember Mr. Stitch, a strange and lesser known flick I once saw as a child. Where I saw this I do not remember but the creepiness of the main character is something I will never forget. Mr. Stitch‘s main character is Lazarus, a creature sewn from the body parts of dozens of deceased people. Its skin is a patchy confection of all sorts of shades of human skin. He is as creepy as it can get but is also a confused and naive being that is plagued by feelings and emotions from the people whose parts make him whole. Lazarus is an example of what the human race truly is. Allow me to elaborate. Supremacists believe that there is one true and pure race. Anything else that does not fit their criteria is inferior and to eliminate the risk of take over, it must be contained and even annihilated. What these people fail to realize is that them, you, and I are just as diverse as Mr. Stitch. Our country was once a colony and its present population can not be other than the most wonderful and miscellaneous mixture of genetic ancestry. There is in fact a true and pure race. It is indeed superior and contains all of mankind’s history imprinted in its genes. It is the race of you and I and of the people on the other side of the globe. Once we become aware of this we can transcend repression and achieve universality. There is only one race, it is the human race. 16

SEPTEMBER 2019

WITH GREEN, WHITE, AND RED adorning every corner, mariachis, tequila, reunions with family and friends, delicious food, trumpets and all kinds of artifacts to make noise, fireworks and a great atmosphere; this is how we celebrate Mexican independence day each year. You can hear the “Viva México!” resounding in the streets as the traditional “Grito” is in full swing. All the houses smell delicious, featuring the countless gastronomic gems that are customary on this day. There is electricity in the air as the excitement buzzes around town as it celebrates one more year of independence The independence day is a time to be surrounded by family, friends, and overall good company, all singing along to folk music and classics such as Vicente Fernandez, Rocio Durcal, Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Pedro Infante, and many more. Our culture is rich with music and dances that exemplify what exactly it is to be Mexican. Traditional dances invoke rituals from folklore and present a history of our people. Dances like El Tapatio, Dance of the Deer, and Dance of the Comales, all have a meaning behind them, whether they represent the joys of courting, offerings to nature and the gods, or the praying for harvest and bounty. Dance is just one way cultures express themselves and pass on the stories of their ancestors onto new generations. This 15th of September, get your folks and have the best day on the town. Maybe even partake in the dances and festivities. Nevertheless, always remember to drink responsibly and be safe out there. Never forget our struggles and achievements as a proud nation, and always aim for more. Viva Mexico!

¡Viva Mexico! SEPTIEMBRE 2019

WELCOME TO

Dolores Hidalgo DOLORES HIDALGO IS a compact town with a pretty, tree-filled plaza, a relaxed ambiance, and important history. It has acquired pilgrimage status for Mexicans; the Mexican independence movement began in earnest in this small place. At 5 am on September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo, the parish priest, rang the bells to summon people to church earlier than usual and issued the Grito de Dolores, also known as the Grito de Independencia. His precise words have been lost to history, but their essence was 'Death to bad government and the gachupines!' (Gachupines was a derisive term for the Spanish-born overlords who ruled Mexico.) Today, Hidalgo is one of Mexico's most revered heroes. Dolores was renamed in his honor in 1824. Mexicans swarm here for Independence Day (September 16), during which time the price of accommodations can more than double. The town's Centro Histórico is worth a day visit from San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato or Querétaro, not only for its interesting independence-themed museums (all of which are within a couple of blocks of the Plaza Principal), but also for its colored Talavera ceramics workshops (several blocks from the plaza) and ice cream (look for the carts on the plaza). 26

FITNESS

HAVE YOUR OWN BACK BY OSCAR SAUCEDO

Ú@vitalnutrition_tx

AS THE SAYING GOES, “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone.” A healthy back is definitely not something that’s included in a typical list of hopes and dreams. But once you lose it, it may make its way towards the top of your wish list pretty quickly. We use our back when we lift from the ground, when we hold a baby, when we lift something overhead, when we reach in the back seat, when we run, when we brush our teeth, when we clip our toenails, when we sit down, when we sit up. I’m sure you get the picture. We use our back every day for almost everything. Don’t lose your back health to find out how important a strong, pain-free back is to you. This month, let’s talk about some very basic ways to keep your back strong and healthy. As a disclaimer, I’d like to mention that not everyone can avoid every injury all of the time. Accidents, bad luck, and aging are part of life and can lead to back injury. But a fit lifestyle can boost your chances of avoiding chronic back pain. Diet and cardio. I realize most people don’t think of this as a way to protect the back. But staying light and thin helps avoid many common back injuries. It’s common sense to me. Carrying around a heavy body will put more stress on the smaller stabilizer muscles. In time, those muscles become fatigued. When a muscle is fatigued, it is weakened and loses force. To make a long story shorter, tired stabilizer muscles makes your back less stable, and that can lead to injury. I recommend 120-300 minutes of cardio per week to help keep the torso lean and light. Eat less calories than what you burn to lose fat around the midsection. Stay flexible. Tight hips, tight inner thighs, tight calves, and

tight chest muscles can all contribute to a back injury. Keeping the entire body flexible and mobile is a great way to avoid many injuries—not just back injuries. See the G. O. A. T., Tom Brady. Although I am not a fan and haven’t read about his “TB12 Method” of training, a Google search tells me that it involves injury prevention by keeping muscles flexible. And because I knew that before his books were released, I feel I can use him as a good example . YouTube “foam roll techniques”, use static stretches similar to ones you learned in P. E. class, and try some Yoga classes to help keep muscles from knotting up and to increase your range of motion. Get strong. Work on core stabilization, then work on core strength. Start off slowly, and build your body from the center out. Develop strength and coordination in the small stabilizer muscles of the core (I define the core as all the muscles that help stabilize and move the spine). Then, when your core is stable, move on to the exercises that increase the strength. I strongly recommend a good personal trainer to guide you through this process. Stay focused. You can do most things correctly, and still end up hurting your back because you weren’t thinking that time you decided to load your barbecue pit onto the truck. Sometimes, you can hurt your back doing something as simple as picking up a dirty sock off of your floor. Try to stay focused on proper form regardless of what you are doing. The older you are, the more you should listen to what I am trying to say! Keep your shoulders back, chest out, back slightly arched, knees bent, and lift with your legs—even if it’s your beautiful 2-year-old granddaughter.

CHILES EN NOGADA The Iconic Dish’s Origin El Origen del Platillo Icónico

DINING

Chiles En Nogada A Bite of History Chiles en Nogada is a very famous Mexican dish that exemplifies the art of cooking in Mexico and highlights the rich food culture of the nation. This dish was invented by nuns in Puebla, Mexico in 1821. It was made and presented to the visiting Mexican Army General Agustin de Iturbide who was involved in a decisive battle to gain control of Mexico City and win the Mexican War of Independence. On his way back to Mexico City, as he was passing through Puebla, the residents presented this meal to him, which is why this dish is so closely tied to the Mexican Independence Day. It is colorful, traditional, and absolutely delicious and quite beautifully amalgamates the red, white, and green of Mexico in its presentation. It is such an iconic dish that you won’t want to miss. Every spoonful is like a bite of history.

Mezcalita Clásica Mezcal is such a traditional ingredient in Mexican cocktails. Try this twist on the classic margarita. The Mezcal adds a really nice smokiness. Combine lime juice, Mezcal, Cointreau, and agave syrup (or simple syrup if you prefer to make it) in a chilled cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Then pour over ice. You can adjust the amount of sweetness by increasing or decreasing the agave/ simple syrup. This recipe is also perfect for a classic margarita. Simply change out the Mezcal for your favourite tequila. Ingredients 2 oz. fresh lime juice 1.5 oz Mezcal ¾ oz. Cointreau ¼ oz. agave nectar or simple syrup

Agite vigorosamente. Luego vierta sobre hielo. When he was 15, he composed, together with a close friend, a song entitled “No quiero” and a year later, Juan Parra, his uncle, offered him to record it in a studio as his birthday present. After being discovered by some producers, he adopted the name “Maluma,” and over the years, he has found much success in the Latin music industry. Musically, Maluma's songs have been described as reggaeton, Latin trap, and pop. He has won a Latin Grammy Award and two Latin American Music Awards and I known for his many collaborations including Shakira, Thalia, and Ricky Martin. JOKER: 85% ON ROTTEN TOMATOES FROM EARLY REVIEWS Todd Phillips' highly-anticipated DC movie Joker premiered at Venice Film Festival last month, followed shortly by rave reviews and early signs are promising with a "Fresh" score of 85%. The film imagines an origin story for Batman's greatest nemesis, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a middle-aged man who lives with his mother and has a humiliating day job as a sign-spinning clown. Joker's premiere follows the release of the final trailer for the movie, which revealed a little more about its story and characters, and left many eager to see this take on the popular supervillain.

END OF THE SUMMER IN STYLE JOIN THE NEON BRIGADE

FIN DE VERANO CON ESTILO ÚNETE A LA BRIGADA DE NEÓN

Though summer is coming to an end, its trends yet resonate through the season, and this year we saw the return of certain classics. Nowadays, we love our retro chic styles, and so it was inevitable that jelly nails, also known as glass nails, would make a comeback. Although we saw a resurgence of them last year, they have certainly caught on this summer as celebs such as Selena Gomez show off their sets on Instagram. This, accompanied with the high fashion trend of neon makeup makes for quite the striking visual. The vibrant neon colors make for a very iconic and arresting look. Add some color to your life and dare to make a bold statement.
