THE DOG DAYS

DÍAS DE PERRO

Florence and the Machine’s famous song once said “the dog days are gone,” however, that seems to not be the case for us as this summer has been one of the hottest in history. The “Dog Days” or Canicula we so dread is at our doorstep, and we certainly feel the heat here in Laredo. As is customary, we would like to remind everyone to stay safe during these high temperatures, stay hydrated, and wear plenty of protective sunscreen. This also goes for our furry companions. Make sure they have plenty of shade, a proper cooling or watering system, and the ability to hide from the sun’s powerful rays. If not, please bring them in as they can definitely overheat just like we do. The summer is a great time to bring the family over to the local pool, or to finally set up your own at home. Swimming is a great way for families to bond, especially right before classes start again this month. That dreaded return to school has us all yearning for the summer to never cease, but alas, all good things must come to an end. As always, stay tuned for plenty of other activities to enjoy this summer as we show you where the social hotspots can be found.

La famosa canción de Florence and the Machine dice “the dog days are gone,”.

LIFE

A Theory on Time Travel

UNA TEORÍA SOBRE EL VIAJE EN EL TIEMPO BY ALEJANDRA SADA

Ú@thriftybordermomma WHO DOESN’T LOVE THE IDEA of time travel? The possibility of going back in time and altering the past to create the best future sounds like an amazing plan. But even if a working time machine was available, can the past be modified and have an effect on the future or will the outcome always be the same? Are our present life circumstances the result of our decisions in the past or is the present exactly as it should be following a divine or cosmic plan? Are we the masters of our own destiny or are we the cast of an already written movie? Albert Einstein said, “The separation between past, present and future is only an illusion, although a convincing one." This defies the concept of time that we all live by and that is of it flowing linearly in the indisputable order of past followed by present followed by future. My understanding of the German physicist’s words is that we live in a timeless never ending now. When an event occurs in the past it ceases to exist and remains only in memory. The future is merely a prediction so what we truly experience is nothing more than the present. What we now call the past was once the present and the future will eventually become the now. We cannot change the past in our current understanding of reality but we can change our perception of it. If the past exists only in memory and our thoughts around this past change, this will impact how we experience the present. Say I sourly parted with a friend in the past but instead I choose to remember a warm farewell. This will alter my current perception of this person and myself for the best and positively impact my expectation of the future. So instead of longing to stumble upon a wormhole, a black hole or the DeLorean, I have chosen to live in the timeless now. There is no past nor future only today and right now so I make the best of it. 16

AUGUST 2019

M A I N F E AT U RE

IF THERE’S ONE THING WE KNOW about summer in Laredo, it is that the heat is a monster. Whether it’s finding respite on a blazing hot afternoon, or navigating the muggy warmth after a rainy day, finding and keeping your cool takes skill. There are so many small tactics we can use to abate the heat, so we thought we’d list a couple in case you’re planning a get-together. It’s so easy and tempting to reach for an icy cold beer or soda when the weather gets too much to bear. However, the better option might be to settle for a beverage at room temperature instead. According to experts, drinking warm water increases blood circulation along with protecting internal organs from damage. It is also better to relieve internal body temperature, keeping one cool from within. Instead of reaching for a bag of chips, grab a slice of the seasonal fruits. Juicy red watermelons and citrus fruits like oranges and lemons are packed with vitamins and high water content, making them the perfect snack for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. To keep things fun, infuse lemon and herbs such as mint or rosemary into a bottle of sparkling water for a refreshing drink. These are also great options to have for those spontaneous summer pool parties. A sluggish palate is a tell-tale sign that your body is feeling the effects of heat. On hot days, opt for lighter options such as steamed fish or chilled soups. Crisp salads of corn, cucumbers, snap peas and tomatoes are also great options. It may seem tempting to go for a cold beer or iced coffee, however, both coffee and alcohol act as diuretics that do not contribute to our recommended daily fluid intake. This means that in excess, along with the intense heat, it could spell out a dose of dehydration. If you must drink, be sure to chase every two cocktails down with a glass of water to stay hydrated. 22

Mexico City IS COSMOPOLITAN AND CULTURED ES COSMOPOLITA Y CULTURAL

MEXICO CITY IS, and has always been, the sun in the Mexican solar system. Though much-maligned in the past, these days the city is cleaning up its act. Revamped public spaces are springing back to life, the culinary scene is exploding and a cultural renaissance is flourishing. On top of all that, by largely managing to distance itself from the drug war, the nation’s capital remains a safe haven of sorts. Far from shaking off visitors, the earthquakes of 2017 revealed a young society who attracted admiration through their solidarity. A stroll through the buzzing downtown area reveals the capital’s storied history, from pre-Hispanic and colonial-era splendor to its contemporary edge. This high-octane megalopolis contains plenty of escape valves in the way of old-school cantinas, intriguing museums, inspired dining and boating excursions along ancient canals. With so much going on, you might consider scrapping those beach plans. 26

FITNESS

FIGHT BACK! BY OSCAR SAUCEDO

Ú@vitalnutrition_tx THIS FACEAPP THING got me thinking about aging and how I would love to delay looking like “old age me.” Judging from other people my age, it seems I’ve done a decent job of doing just that. Still, I’m definitely not what I once was! As the saying goes, “Father Time is undefeated.” We cannot avoid the aging process. Our muscle size and strength will decrease. Our speed, agility, and quickness will decline. Our power will diminish. Our aerobic capacity will dwindle. I’ve seen studies that say that 20% of muscle mass is lost between the ages of 40 and 60. I can only assume we keep losing quite a bit of muscle after that. I’ve read that power can decrease about 3% per year in our early 40s, and about 1% per year after that. I’ve researched that our aerobic capacity can decrease about 1% per year after reaching our peak. Lucky for us Average Joes, those numbers mostly apply to elite athletes, or people actually performing at maximum exercise capacity! They perform at a level we never (or very rarely) reach! That means that there’s a really good chance that—for a good while longer—we won’t notice a huge decline in our physical performance because we have yet to reach our best version of ourselves! As we age, we can and should continue to lift weights, run, jump, sprint, row, squat, lunge, and punch! Ageing does not mean we have to stop exercise. As we age, we may lift lighter, run slower, and jump lower. But now imagine yourself at 85 years old still lifting, still running, and still jumping! There

aren’t many 85-year-olds today still doing those things. In my opinion, ageing means there is EVEN MORE reason to exercise and eat healthy food. That’s what I call “fighting back”. Fight the ageing process every step of the way. Fight to stay strong, stay flexible, stay agile, and stay conditioned. Some people say that it isn’t living to limit your bad foods and to be in the gym every day exerting yourself. But I think it isn’t living to have to worry about fitting into an airline seat, or to have to be at dialysis 3 times a week, or to miss out on a grandchild’s wedding just because my body can’t take the stress of the trip. I want to live the whole time that I am alive. “Old age me” does have to keep a few things in mind, though. Older people can do the same exercise at the same intensity as a young person. However, it does take a little longer to recover. Get some guidance to determine your recovery time. As a general rule, you should keep improving every time you perform the same exercise (more weight, more reps, faster time, etc.). Your food and supplements play a huge role in helping you recover. You actually need MORE supplements as you age. Supplements help to promote recovery. The faster you can recover, the more quickly you can get back in the gym! Hydrate well and get with a fitness professional to help you choose the right foods to keep you fighting back at 100%. If you’re not fighting to live, you’re allowing yourself to fade away. Stay in the gym and in the fight!

Local pizza is always better

La pizza local siempre es mejor

Now that life is getting busy again, we may oftentimes opt to eat out or order something for dinner. Many of our first thoughts may be to get some pizza, but instead of getting that same old chain brand, why not try something local? Jalapeños Pizza and Wings has been serving fresh, delicious pizzas to Laredo for 7 years now. Stemming from a trip to New York, the Cuevas Brothers Victor and Marco were inspired by the many locales and returned to Laredo with dreams, ideas, and recipes. Jalapeños uses fresh ingredients, from their doughs and sauces which are made daily, to their higher quality toppings. Try out their unique takes on classics such as their Buffalo Chicken, Barbecue Chicken, and the classic pepperoni. However, as the Cuevas brothers themselves say, “Dare to try something different. Get out of the routine.” Try their unique Pizza Mexicana, a pie like no other topped with beans, chorizo, onions, tomato, and the titular jalapeños, or new favorites such as their Spinach Sensation. Drop the chains and try some real pizza today!

Sex On The Beach The Sex on the Beach sprung onto the cocktail stage during a contest in Florida to see which bar could sell the most peach schnapps. To claim that covetable title, the drink had to woo drinkers of all walks to the wonders of the fruity liqueur, and it did so by combining it with a super-group of booze-masking ingredients: cranberry juice, orange juice and Chambord. If you can manage to order one without cracking a smile, you won’t get much further than the first sip with a serious face. MR. ROBOT: SEASON 4 COMING THIS FALL Mr. Robot has been a critical win for USA Network since the beginning. Stars Rami Malek and Christian Slater have received numerous award nominations. USA Network has not set a release date for Mr. Robot Season 4, but the new teaser trailer states that the final season is "coming this fall." Filming started back in November and is still ongoing. Thus, fall would be the earliest we could expect Mr. Robot Season 4 to premiere. However, given the recent revelation about a Christmas time setting, we might be looking at November or December.

MR.

GET THE RIGHT KIND OF SHIRT FOR THE HEAT Going back to school means going back to those required school uniforms or dress codes. To many, these can seem very restrictive when it comes to personalizing your style and dealing with uncomfortable materials. That is why learning what textures and fabrics work best for what season is optimal. Cotton is one the best fabrics for hot weather. Not only is it cheap and hugely available, but it is also great for the heat. Cotton is soft, lightweight, breathable, and soaks up sweat, allowing heat to escape the body and for you to stay cool. Linen is also a good option though that one is a bit stiffer. Rayon is a man-made fabric blended from cotton, wood pulp, and other natural or synthetic fibers. It was invented as a cheaper alternative to silk (which also makes silk a good summer fabric). Rayon has very thin fibers, which allows it to breathe more than other fabrics and gives it a lightness that prevents it from sticking to a body in hot weather. Even if we are restricted in the designs we can wear and the types of clothing, we can always hunt for materials of our choice to make dressing in the morning one less chore.

FRONTER A

Are You Ok? BY JORGE SANTANA

ÃŽJorge Santana

AUGUST 2019
